HOW TO SUBMIT: Submission Guidelines

The MACUHO Magazine is a quarterly publication that features articles and updates from and for housing professionals in the region. It is intended to serve as a resource for processes, professional development and to build engagement throughout the region. MACUHO Magazine seeks content in two primary formats: -Features Articles: Features articles are pieces focusing on current events, hot topics or best practices. These are generally 1000 to 2500 words. - Column Articles: Column Articles are recurring articles centered on a common theme or topic. If you have an interest in becoming a columnist, we would ask that you commit to 4 articles throughout the year around your topic, and that we work on your column theme together first. Columns are generally 500-750 words. - Committee, Regional Updates or Leadership Council Updates: MACUHO updates about past or upcoming events are also included in the Magazine. These are 500-750 words. Submission Guidelines - Accepted files: .doc, .docx - Information to include (will be included in the publication): - Article Title - Author Name - Professional Title - Institution - MACUHO Role (if desired) - Contact information (if desired) - Graphics: high-resolution headshot, applicable group photos or images - Please include photo credit information if applicable How to Submit an Article - MACUHO Magazine accepts articles on a rolling basis through membership and individual solicitation of the region. - Due to the time required for editing and formatting the magazine, we suggest submitting an article 2-3 months before the topic would be immediately relevant. For example, for a piece on navigating a job placement conference, we would ask that you have the article submitted by December or January. - Email articles with headshots and photos to magazine@macuho.org. - We prefer to receive the supporting documents and article together in 1 email.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Autumn Greetings, Beautiful People, Three Weeks. By the time of this publication, there are approximately three weeks left in my presidency as the leader of MACUHO. This experience, much like the leaves about to transform into their most beautiful form, has changed me for the better. In my closing letter to you, all want to talk about giving back, the power of change, and most importantly: gratitude.

Giving Back You time. Your efforts. Your expertise. Your financial support. Your passion. Your smile. These are just some of the ways I have seen members giving back to MACUHO and the greater field over the course of the last year. I thank you all for the dedication you bring to your professional and volunteer endeavors, and I ask you to continue this trend in the weeks, months and years ahead. Give what you can, where you can and encourage others to do the same. To quote Aristotle, “the Whole is greater than the sum of its parts”.

The Power of Change Over this past year, I transitioned fully into a new campus, home and position (in August), assumed the presidency of MACUHO, participated in my first RELI as the RELI Co-Director for MACUHO and started a doctorate program. Through these various levels of involvement, I am actively changing into a better version of myself. It is oftentimes challenging, and requires intense focus and time management but ultimately, is laying a path for my greater success and ability to serve. The same is true with the changes we have seen and hope to see within MACUHO. Nothing worth doing is easy, and at this year’s Annual Conference, you will hear me read off a laundry list of accomplishments that we have tackled this year. We will vote on five proposed changes to how MACUHO is structured and operates. You will see us recognize our award winners who over the course of their career and this past year have contributed positively to the profession in an effort to change it for the better. We will changes and we will grow. As such, we continue to need dedicated leaders to continue to help MACUHO adapt to meet the changing needs of our members and the profession.

Gratitude I am immensely thankful for the opportunity to have been your MACUHO President this past year. It has taught me more about myself, my leadership

style, my values, my convictions than I could have ever thought possible. I ran for the position because I felt that I had something to give the Association. However, it is the Association, and each one of you, who has given of yourselves to me. I could not have done this without your support of me and confidence in me. Many of you reached out to let me know that I had not â&#x20AC;&#x153;broken itâ&#x20AC;? or that I was inspiring you, and these well wishes will remain treasures to me. I encourage each of you to reach out to those individuals in your lives and thank them for the role they played in your journey, no matter how small. The power of gratitude is immeasurable. Friends, we work in a field where thanks is oftentimes given sparingly, so please allow me to express it loud and clear: THANK YOU ALL for what you do on your campuses every day and what you do to keep MACUHO strong and moving forward. BASKET RAFFLE Each year, the MACUHO conference hosts a basket raffle to benefit the Lisa A. Pierce Volunteer Incentive Program for Students (VIPS) and a local charity. Our local charity this year is Our West Bayfront. Our West Bayfront is a community-based approach to revitalization that seeks to enhance the quality of life in Erie’s West Bayfront neighborhoods by promoting civic involvement, thoughtful development, historical preservation, and neighborhood pride. The West Bayfront area encompasses 13,000 residents, 843 acres, more than 4,400 structures, and 32 miles of roadways. Learn more at http://www.ourwestbayfront.org/. To support the Lisa A. Regardless of your position, please make sure that you stop by the exhibit hall located in the North Great Hall, on Thursday October 25, 2018 and take time to get to know the vendors. The exhibit hall will open at 9:00 am and close at 4:30 pm. Again, this year we will have Senior Housing Officer focused time during program session 2 and program session 3, this does not mean that you need to be a Senior Housing Officer to attend during this time. MACUHO ELECTIONS 2018 AND ANNUAL CONFERENCE BUSINESS MEETING INFORMATION Greetings, MACUHO Family! I am honored to facilitate the 2018 Executive Board Elections at the Annual Conference and announce the slate of individuals who have stepped forward to run for office. At this year’s Annual Conference, we will elect individuals to fill the positions of Vice President/President-Elect, Treasurer, and three Director positions: Annual Programs, Membership Development, and Information Technology. The full slate of candidates running for these positions is located on our website: https://www.macuho.org/page/Elections2018. I invite you to view the candidates and review their submissions. Voting for Executive Board Positions will occur during the Annual Conference Business Meeting on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 9:30 am in the Erie Bayfront Convention Center, Room 100. Voting at the annual business meeting is by institution. Each member institution will receive a voting card upon conference registration check-in on Tuesday and Wednesday. A member institution is defined as a college or university within the MACUHO region that has housing officers and owns or operates residence halls, per the MACUHO Constitution (Article III, Section 1). If you are the only person from a member institution that will be attending the annual conference, you are the voting delegate and your attendance is urged and requested as we need as many voting delegates to attend as possible to meet quorum. If your institution is sending multiple individuals, only one person from your institution will vote with the card. Please consult with your leadership or other members to designate the person who will be your voting delegate to ensure that we have the maximum number of institutions present at the Business Meeting to meet quorum. All conference attendees are welcome to attend to MACUHO Annual Business Meeting. Upon arrival, Regional Coordinators will ask whether someone is an institution’s voting delegate. Voting delegates will be directed to check in, and to vote in Executive Board elections on laptops set aside from the entrance to help with traffic flow and to ensure privacy. Non-voting attendees can take a seat for the meeting and review the agenda, previous year’s minutes, and connect with Executive Board members before the meeting begins. Documents for the meeting will be made available on the MACUHO website, via e-mail to all conference attendees, and on Guidebook. SPECIAL PRESENTERS Dr. Paul Gordon Brown is a scholar, consultant, and speaker specializing in residential curriculum and curricular approaches to student learning outside the classroom. Paul has nearly 20 years of professional experience in higher education and student affairs, holding positions within residence life ranging from Resident Assistant to Dean of Students. Paul holds a PhD in Higher Education from Boston College and has taught in the Higher Education Programs at Boston College and Merrimack College. Paul currently serves as the Director of Curriculum, Training, and Research for the higher education technology software company, Roompact. An experienced presenter, Paul has had accepted and given over 80 refereed presentations at international and regional conferences. Paul has also served as a faculty member for the Institute on the Curricular Approach (formerly the Residential Curriculum Institute) for multiple years, is a faculty member for ACUHO-Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Professional Standards Institute, and is a graduate of ACUHO-Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s National Housing Training Institute. During my 25 year tenure with the Pennsylvania State University, I have worked in Student Affairs, Residence Life and Auxiliary and Business Services. Some of my experiences have included facility management, budget administration, supervision, student conduct, new student orientation, student activities, counseling/crises management, student government advising, student/staff training and on-call responsibilities. I have also had the privilege of working within the Penn State Commonwealth Campus system for 6 years serving in smaller campus communities. EIR, RESIDENCE EDUCATION Joanne Goldwater

Joanne Goldwater is the Associate Dean for Retention and Student Success at St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM). In this role, Joanne is responsible for helping the institution create a retention strategy, and connecting students with the people, programs, activities, resources, and support systems they need to be successful and to persist to graduation. She is also an instructor of sign language at the College. As the Regional Affiliation Director on the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I) Executive Board, Joanne served as the liaison with the North American-based Regional Presidents and President-Elects, and identified and articulated issues of importance to the regions and the Executive Board. Joanne was the co-founder and co-director of the Regional Entry-Level Institute. She served as the President of the Mid-Atlantic Association of College and University Housing Officers (MACUHO), the Eastern District Representative for ACUHO-I, and a trustee and Past Chair of the ACUHO-I Research & Educational Foundation Board. Joanne has presented keynote addresses, online courses, and Webinars, as well as numerous conference presentations both regionally and nationally. She has received numerous awards and recognitions. One of her most valued recognitions was in 2015, when MACUHO honored Joanne by creating the Joanne Goldwater Distinguished Senior Level Professional Award. She received her B.S. in Deaf Education from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro. While working full-time at Central North Carolina School for the Deaf, Joanne completed her M.Ed. in Counseling & Guidance from UNCG. Before coming to SMCM, Joanne worked at Western Maryland College for six years. She started there as the Assistant Director and held several other titles before joining the SMCM staff. She has been at SMCM since 1993, starting as the Director of Residence Life. In 2000, she was promoted to the Assistant Dean for Residential Life position and who proin 2006 to the Associate Dean of Students/Director ousing and of Residence Life position. Joanne is a proud breast ne time with cancer survivor of almost eight years and is active work or best with the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. She is happily married to her husband of 23 years, and loves being the stepmom to three (now) adult sons and being a grandmother. She also loves her cat, Aria.
