(The 100), its B o a r d o f Directors, Members, and our Executive Director, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our 26th Annual Black-Tie Dinner Gala and to the Gala Edition of MENTOR, the official publication of the 100.

25th Anniversary Dinn On Saturday, May 16, 2016, The 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee celebrated its 25th year serving the Nashville area and surrounding communities in its support of young black males.
T
he festive, black-tie event was held at long-time sponsor Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center and is considered one of the most prestigious events of its kind in Nashville. Community partners such as Nissan North America, Belmont University, Deloitte Services,

PSAV, and others joined in the celebration which highlighted the programs of The 100. Presenters included young men involved in the 100 KINGS, Collegiate 100, Nissan Resume Challenge, and the 100 Leadership Challenge Academy. These dynamic young men shared their personal stories, including a recent college road trip as part of their ACT preparation and participation in the Nissan Resume Challenge, which inspires careers in engineering and technology.
Attendees were treated to a Debate Competition by the finalists in the 100 KINGS Debate Competition, where they contested the statement “Social media does
ner Gala Reflection more harm than good.” The passion and professionalism these young men displayed was a testament to the educational enrichment and leadership development they have received as members of the 100 KINGS.
During the evening, Founder and Board member Mr. Samuel Howard received the Legends Award in recognition of his 25 years of continuous active service, and Board member Mr. Ronald L. Corbin was recognized as the Distinguished Member of the Year for his continuing leadership and passion toward The 100's mission in support of young black males in Middle Tennessee.
The Gala culminated in a surprise announcement by Board member Mr. Darrell S. Freeman as he presented the organization with a $100,000 donation toward the 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee Scholarship Fund. This fund is used to provide scholarship support to the 100 KINGS as they graduate high school and enroll full-time in college. A special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Freeman and all the other sponsors and contributors that support our mission “to nurture and enhance the growth, development and opportunities for young black males of Middle Tennessee.”

The COLLEGIATE 100 These young men share a common interest with The 100, which is to enhance and improve the quality of life for younger black males of Middle Tennessee through mentoring and tutoring programs. Currently, there are over 150 members in Collegiate 100 chapters on college campuses throughout Middle Tennessee, including Middle Tennessee State University, Tennessee State University, and Meharry Medical College.
To accomplish its mission, the 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee solicits the support of community volunteers to assist with the implementation of its programmatic efforts.
O
ne crucial component of this volunteer effort is generated through the services of collegiate volunteers known as the Collegiate 100.
Each school semester, The 100 provide career and life coaching for Collegiate 100 members through a series of “Real Talk” mentorship and networking events. A networking breakfast was held in the fall of 2016 at Belmont University featuring local community and corporate leaders providing career and college advice through shared experiences. This past spring, The 100 hosted another “Real Talk” event on the campus of
MTSU for the Collegiate 100 young men of MTSU and TSU. The Collegiate 100 actively support the school year programmatic efforts of the 100 KINGS. These young men are involved in the Saturday KINGS sessions by tutoring, mentoring, and encouraging the KINGS to stay focused on their studies in preparation for college. The Collegiate 100's involvement and efforts toward the mission of the organization brings with it another powerful addition in support of productive educational opportunities and positive role models for young black males. Congratulations to the Collegiate 100 of Tennessee State University for earning the recognition of “Chapter of the Year” across all the Collegiate 100 chapters in the United States. This honor was awarded during the 100 Black Men of America national conference on June 9, 2017.
The 100 KINGS The 100 believe that longterm success in America requires a strong blend of knowledge, skills and confidence. American youth demonstrate how well they have developed in these areas through their behavior and academic performance. Through the commitment of its staff, members, supporters, and corporate partners, The 100 has delivered successful developmental programs throughout its 26 years, including The 007, The 100 Scholars, and its current program, The 100 KINGS.
T
he 100 KINGS program is designed to help black male youth develop the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to succeed in life. One of the primary goals of the program is to prepare the students to succeed in college. KINGS begin the

program as fifth graders and remain until high school graduation. The current KINGS are between the ages of 14-17 and are in grades 9 through 12. During the school year, the KINGS meet two Saturdays per month on the campus of Belmont University. The 2016-2017 school year programming focused largely on college and career readiness including the following: Ÿ College readiness with ACT preparation

summer to the KINGS program. Being a KING requires a multiyear and yearlong responsibility that is rewarded with college scholarship support directly correlated to participation and attendance. The 100 Summer Academy program offerings to reach more students across Middle Tennessee. The series offered this summer include: ŸS p e e c h / D e b a t e / F o r e n s i c s

Tank” Competition
The 100 Summer Academy is a sixweek series of academic studies and developmental opportunities that cover a wide variety of subjects.
I
n addition, diverse perspectives and potential career options are provided through field trips and guest speakers. This summer, members of the 100 KINGS and other high school students will participate in a series of twoweek academies in a project-based
learning team approach. Sessions will be held at Belmont University and Vanderbilt University. The goal of the summer session is to help the young men retain and improve their academic skill levels through experiential activities that incorporate real-world usage of Math and Language Arts skills. In addition, leadership and social skills are developed through leadership activities, subject matter expert discussions, and team projects. New academies were introduced last summer as The 100 seeks to broaden its
This summer, The 100 is pleased to partner with the YWCA's MEND initiative, which is dedicated to ending violence against women and girls by engaging and educating boys. Through discussions and activities, MEND participants learn, share, and grow as they journey from boys to men. Also, the 100 Summer Academy will participate in the Metro Nashville Police Department Youth Academy. Through this program, the young men will learn more about police careers, SWAT team, K9 operations, and community and police relations.
The 100 STEM Academy The 100 believes that youth must be exposed to opportunities in the exciting and dynamic areas of STEM as early as possible, and not just upon their arrival to post-secondary education. The 100's STEM Initiative has three primary goals: Ÿ to expose youth in Middle
Tennessee to the various aspects of STEM and the many career opportunities, including the technology and engineering i n d u s t r i e s i n a c r e a t i ve , experiential, and thoughtprovoking way; Ÿ to increase the number of youth in Middle Tennessee who pursue STEM-related careers; and Ÿ to increase the pool of talent in these career areas to employers in Middle Tennessee. The long-term strategy is to deliver a multi-year 100 STEM Academy that begins with boys in middle school. The

goal of the 100 STEM Academy is to provide opportunities for young black males who are underrepresented in STEM programs. The STEM curriculum provides hands-on experiences such as coding, science experiments, robotics, and educational field trips for middle school boys. The 100 partnered with Metro Nashville Public Schools during the 2016-2017 school year in support of the MNPS STEM afterschool and Saturday programs. The high school KINGS provided mentorship and coaching to the younger middle school
students during these sessions. In addition, The 100 provided field trip opportunities for the MNPS students, including: a day at the movies to see “Hidden Figures”; a visit to Deloitte to job shadow, tour and learn about STEM career opportunities; and a special event at Lipscomb University to hear from NBA great and business mogul Magic Johnson. The 100 STEM Academy will meet for five weeks this summer beginning in mid-June. MNPS certified STEM teachers will develop the curriculum and deliver the content with the support of members of the 100 KINGS serving as counselors. The 100 STEM Academy will meet on the campus of Tennessee State University through collaboration with the TSU College of Engineering and 100 member Dr. S. Keith Hargrove.
NISSAN RESUME CHALLENGE This past February, The 100 partnered once again with our long-time supporter Nissan North America to present the 4th annual Nissan Resume Challenge.
T
his program offers local area high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to learn proper resume building and inter view techniques through a series of workshops and interviews conducted by The 100 and local Nissan executives. The Nissan Resume Challenge began in the fall of 2016 with approximately 75 high school students attending a Resume Workshop held at Lipscomb University. These young men were asked to submit their resume and were then interviewed by members of The 100 and Nissan at the law firm of Butler Snow in downtown Nashville. Challenge winners were invited to participate in a 2-day leadership development program held at Nissan's Franklin, Tennessee headquarters on February 23-24, 2017. The young men of Middle Tennessee were joined by high school students from other 100
Black Men chapters from Chicago, Jackson, Atlanta, Dallas and Washington, D.C. The high school students from Nashville represented Martin Luther King, Jr. Magnet High School, Maplewood High School, Cane Ridge High School, and East Nashville High School. The young men heard from several key community and Nissan leaders and toured the Nissan assembly and battery plants in Smyrna, Tennessee, where they met with Nissan engineers and automobile designers. In addition, they had the special honor to m e e t w i t h Jo h n Martin, Senior Vice P r e s i d e n t , Manufacturing, Supply Chain Manag ement and Purchasing for Nissan North America. Mr. Martin led the students on a tour of the car museum, which is always a highlight for these new young drivers!
Golf for Life The Golf for Life program was reintroduced last summer and The 100 are excited to expand this program for the summer of 2017. Seven young men who participated in the Nissan Resume Challenge have been selected for a summer internship in partnership with Vanderbilt Legends (Golf) Club and Belle Meade Country Club.
The Nissan Resume Challenge has served to broaden the reach of The 100's program offerings to high school juniors and seniors across Middle Tennessee. This partnership will continue to grow and provide unique learning and development experiences for inner city youth who may have never had this opportunity without the generous support of our great friends at Nissan North America.

At the end of their workday, they will also receive professional golf lessons and golf etiquette provided by local golf professional “Golf for Life� provides an 8-week Buddy Harston. In addition, they will also learn internship at the two golf courses. During golf etiquette and life skills provided by the First this paid internship, participants will learn Tee of Middle Tennessee.
The long-term goal of this program is to extend to multiple golf courses and clubs in Middle Tennessee to provide summer internships for youth across the area while building life skills through golf.

Distinguished Member of the Year Alfonzo Alexander Office of Relationship Development, where he provides strategic leadership to NASBA's Communications, Marketing, and Meetings Departments. He also oversees the leadership development, employee engagement activities, diversity and ethics compliance for the organization, while facilitating special projects working with the CEO. Prior to joining NASBA, Alexander served as the Regional Manager & Managing Director for the Southeast Region of INROADS, Inc. where he led operations and business development in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

lfonzo Alexander serves as Chief Relationship Officer of National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) and President of NASBA's Center for the Public Trust (CPT). As Chief Relationship Officer, Alexander leads the
Alexander is a business school graduate of Tennessee Tech University. He also earned an MBA from Lipscomb University and completed an Executive Leadership Program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is certified through several organizations as a facilitator and is a certified professional coach.
Alexander has a passion for working in the community. He serves on the audit and executive committees of the board of directors for the Memorial Foundation. He is the Immediate Past-Chairman of the board for The 100. He is also a member or the 2016-17 Leadership Nashville class. Because of his commitment to education, Alexander serves on the Board of Visitors for the Lipscomb University College of Business, the Board of Governors of Beta Gamma Sigma, and the Sponsor Advisory Group for the PhD Project. Additionally, Alexander is a board member for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Middle Tennessee (Past Chair man), Youth Encouragement Services (Advisory Board & Past President), and is a former member of the Metropolitan Nashville Sports Authority Board of Directors. The Legends Award Bishop Joseph W. Walker International. A recipient of numerous awards and honors, Bishop Walker sits on noteworthy boards, including the Board of the American Red Cross and Citizens Bank. In February 2016, he was elected to and serves on the Board of Trustees of Meharry Medical College and, in October 2016, he was appointed by Governor Haslam to serve on the Board of Bishop Walker was born in Shreveport, Tennessee State University. Louisiana to Deacon Joseph and Rosa Walker. He received a Bachelor of Arts Deeply concerned about America's youth degree from Southern University in Baton and young adults, Bishop Walker is the Rouge, Louisiana; a Master of Divinity visionary behind Mt. Zion's Youth & degree from Vanderbilt University and a Children's Ministry, which includes the Doctor of Ministry degree from Princeton Judah Generation Youth Choir. Likewise, Theological Seminary. The Legends Award is given to an individual or organization that has made tremendous contributions and positive impacts toward black male youth in Middle Tennessee.

The Catalyst Award Dr. Turner Nashe, Jr. & Phylanice Nashe, JD The 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee, Inc. is thrilled to recognize Dr. Turner Nashe, Jr. and his wife Phylanice Nashe, J.D. with the Catalyst Award. This honor is given to an individual or organization that has made an immeasurable impact on our organization and challenging others to invest in the futures of young black men. In recognition of their generous philanthropy and support of our programs, Dr. and Mrs. Nashe are most deserving of this award. A recognized leader in building technology that facilitates delivery of educational and entertainment content to security-sensitive industries, Dr. Nashe received his doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision from Tennessee State University. He also received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, from John Carroll University. Dr. Nashe was recognized as the 2014 Innovator of the Year by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce as has been a featured speaker for TEDx Nashville. He has served on the Board of Directors of The 100 for several years.

r. Nashe has built several businesses around proprietary digital delivery systems. These systems provide relevant content to schools, correctional facilities and health care providers. He has worked with organizations in the private and public sector. His work has attracted firms from technology startups to the Fortune 500. His inventions have created innovative solutions for emerging ecosystems that are

revolutionizing traditional approaches to delivery of educational content within secure facilities and performance verification within healthcare systems. Dr. Nashe and his wife Phylanice are co-founders of Innertainment Delivery Systems, LLC (IDS), a Nashville based educational software, hardware and content company. Phylanice Nashe, J.D., CSM, is a former personal injury and landlord/tenant attorney. She earned her Law Degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and her Rule 31 Mediation Certification from Lipscomb University's Conflict Management Institute. Phylanice serves on the Nashville Conflict Resolution Center's board of directors and has volunteered for NCRC's General Sessions Civil Mediation Program. She has also served as Associate Campus Dean and Professor of Business Law at Strayer University. Through their leadership, the Nashe team has helped organizations transition from traditional education to progressive education as the digital age becomes the new normal. Dr. Nashe's inventions represent innovative approaches to the use of digital technology as a means to accelerate human development and social performance. While technology is rapidly advancing, Dr. Nashe wants to ensure that it enables and optimizes human development to its fullest potential.
