LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Spring has sprung bringing in a new season, a new issue, and . . . a new editor! I’ve been working at RIO for almost 4 years as the magazine coordinator, and I can honestly say it has been a fun ride. I’m ready to keep diving into new experiences and meeting new people with RIO by my side. Once again, RIO is back rolling out local stories in our colorful spring issue. In this edition, you’ll find exclusive interviews including Laredo-born, A.J. Mayers, a marketing coordinator for Paramount Pictures in California and the author of four novels, and an interview with Digital’s radio hosts, Ulises “Ozo” Campos and Joanna de la Garza. On the cover, we feature engaged couple, Brenda Carmona and Mauricio Sanchez, at an elegant furnishing store in Laredo. We combed through the spring 2017 collections at Joe Brand to bring you the top fashion and accessory trends of the season. As always, we highlight various events including Yuridia at the Laredo Energy Arena and Laredo’s nightclubs and bars. Also, we welcome Juliana Diez Barroso as our new fashion columnist in RIO Magazine. I hope this issue can carry out the mission to entertain our readers with local talent and events and meets your expectations.

Cheers! Alejandra Cantu EDITOR

ACROBATS TAKE OVER

DOWNTOWN LAREDO Tuesday, March 21st was met by acrobats dressed as colorful bugs, from Cirque Du Soleil, taking over downtown Laredo for a small skit. It was a taste of what was to be showcased during their performance at the Laredo Energy Arena that week. The bugs performed at Saint Augustine Plaza and the Outlet Shoppes of Laredo with a spectacular balancing and a diabolos act. The public was shocked and happy for the surprise.

DEAR MS.M

entretenimiento entertainment Por Jessica Morales

Dear Ms. M: I help care for my grandson, for a couple of hours each day, when he gets out of school. He was recently diagnosed with ADHD and I am wondering how I can help him while he’s with me. Any suggestions on what I can do?

Dear Caregiver: Being that your grandson is in your care for only a few hours, you can help him with the most important thing needed by children with ADHD – structure. Help him establish a routine in regards to homework, eating and play time. Children with ADHD function best when they know what to expect. Have him help you create a simple list of rules that are short and straight-forward which let him know what he is to do. (For example, eat lunch at 4:30, begin homework at 5:30, play time for 30-45 min.) Keep in mind that these children are easily distracted so allow him several breaks while doing his work and make sure there is little to no noise while he’s working. TV’s and music should be off for him to concentrate. Once he’s done, praise him. Last, have his meals and snacks be on the healthy side – more fruits and vegetables and less sugars and no caffeine. This will help improve his functioning and lessen symptoms. If you’d like to find out more, I highly recommend you visit chadd.org.

SPRING

Dear Ms. M: My daughter is pregnant and due in June. A friend of mine offered to host a baby shower for my daughter, earlier this year, but we haven’t heard of any plans. I see my friend weekly and she asks about them, but there’s no mention of the baby shower. Do you think I should mention it?

Dear Baby Shower: Yes, I would definitely bring up the subject the next time you see her. There’s nothing wrong with following up on an offer she made. The worst case scenario will be that she forgot or is unable to host the baby shower for whatever reason. I always recommend talking things out as opposed to assuming things to avoid a misunderstanding. Once you talk to her, you and your daughter can discuss how and if to proceed with the party. Luckily, there’s still time to host something yourself or have someone else do it.

Ms. M. offers her opinion on a variety of subjects. They are expressing personal and professional opinions and views. These opinions or views are not intended to treat or diagnose; nor are they meant to replace the treatment and care that you may be receiving from a licensed physician or mental health professional. If you have specifi c concerns or a situation in which you require professional psychological or medical help, you should consult with a trained and qualifi ed specialist in the area of concern. Ms. M. is not responsible for the outcome or results of following the advice, in any given situation, for you are completely responsible for your actions. ECLECTIC CITIZEN:

JULIANA DIEZ

BARROSO

YOUR DAILY FASHION GUIDE

Ever since I was a little girl, I remember taking clothes out of my closet, creating outfits, and taking pictures of them with my Polaroid camera. It’s safe to say I was a fashion blogger in the making. Now, as a 23-year-old woman, my passion for capturing my taste in fashion has become more official than ever. I always knew I wanted to make fashion part of my lifestyle, but never knew how...until fashion blogging became a thing. A few months ago, I decided to join the blogosphere. I channeled my creativity, understanding of social media, and love for fashion and Eclectic Citizen was born. “Eclectic” because I think my taste in fashion comes from all sorts of places – I like tying different things together and not sticking to a specific style or trend. “Citizen” because I wanted to incorporate eclecticism into my everyday lifestyle as a citizen of the world. Spring is the time for adding pops of color to your wardrobe. My current obsession is button-down shirts with not-so-typical patterns. While collars and buttons may scream out “business attire” at first, a few adjustments can make them more fashionable in seconds. In these outfits, I’ve given the simple button-down a twist by tying or tucking it in at the waist, pairing it with cool jeans and just the right accessories. Be on the look out for button-down shirts with fun patterns, like rose stripes, a fun quote or orange fish on them, and you’ll master the look!

Check out my blog www.eclecticitizen.com for more daily fashion tips. Enjoy!

VINTAGE FURNISHINGS WITH A

MODERN

TOUCH

D

Don’t let the word vintage throw you off guard or mislead you when considering shopping at Chula Bee. Their slogan, “Entering a world where old is new again,” is truly how one feels upon entering this amazing store. Chula Bee Design and Consign came to fruition after first cousins, Melissa Levander and Maya Guerra Zuniga, decided to bring something extraordinarily special both in a beautiful, yet edgy way in design and home décor to Laredo and South Texas. Melissa Levander is a very talented set decorator with over 30 years of experience in the film industry in Los Angeles. She has sets for well-known films such as Made of Honor, starring Patrick Dempsey, and The Conspirator, directed by Robert Redford, under her belt. Melissa is presently the set decorator for the tv series, Agents of Shield. She is a celebrated interior designer to celebrities

in Los Angeles, such as Kate Walsh and Indiana Menzel. Together with their love and affinity for an eclectic mix of things new and old, Chula Bee reflects Maya and Melissa’s artistic and creative side. At the store, you will find a trove of treasures, from neoclassical pieces to the most contemporary ones to date. Most of their pieces come out of Beverly Hills, Malibu, and Santa Barbara. Many other pieces also come with a story. Maya and Melissa sold a coffee table that was once Robert Redford’s and a Persian rug that was used for Jay Z’s Grammy’s party. Melissa and Maya’s rule in selecting their inventory for the store is very simple; they both have to love what goes into the store enough to want it for themselves. Melissa says that today, especially in big cities like Los Angeles, where she resides, everyone wants vintage pieces. Clients want

Melissa and Maya high-quality, well-built, one-ofa-kind beautiful pieces. She also explains that the “matchy matchy” look is out. Clients want their homes to feel modern and fresh, but yet interesting and lived in. Chula Bee offers design services in a very modern approach. Customers can see the design in a computerized sketch up program to let them envision the space as realistically as possible. The store also offers gorgeous designer fabrics and wall coverings. Cleaning SPRING

I

AMANDA

MONTOYA

In the consumer world we live in, we are brainwashed every minute to want everything that catches our eye while scrolling through our social media feed. I, for one, am NOT immune to the flash of temptation to want everything that I see, but I have begun to recognize the stress that it causes me at times to keep up with everything that I want and already have. I am currently 7 months pregnant going through the “nesting” stage for the arrival of our second child. The panic set in recently when I realized that I do not have one single thing prepared for his birth. I don’t have crib sheets, room décor, diapers, a baby swing, or even a changing table. I have been caught up in the progress and transition of opening our third restaurant, raising my two-yearold daughter with my husband, and living life in between. Most moms can relate in juggling a similar lifestyle, and most of us can tell you that as much as we love it, it is overwhelming. I began “Spring Cleaning” and letting go of things in my life that no longer served me by de-cluttering my closet, my daughter’s toy chest, and her baby

items which accumulated to an amazing pile of stuff that no longer served us. Suddenly I noticed a mindshift within me, while letting go of “stuff” began to lift some weight off of my shoulders. I continued to de-clutter my life and focused on making room for only the things I need and the things that bring me joy. I began to take steps to simplify the way I live and parent, and focus only on what is truly important. I began to explore a minimalistic approach to my newfound motherhood by nesting like a minimalist, asking myself the following questions: Do I need it or do I want it? Does it serve a greater purpose? Does it spark joy? I am conscious of the fact that the idea of minimalism can be quite extreme, however, I am approaching it from a perspective of joy. It is not about a flash of instant gratification; it is about living in alignment with what truly matters. Living with intention is how we can teach our children to live a more productive life. “Mimimalism is not about having less. It is about making room for more of what matters.”

From Laredo to Los Angeles, Anthony James Mayers, known as A. J. Mayers, is the marketing coordinator for Paramount Pictures in California and the author of four novels.

Beginnings

33

HUMBLE

Born and raised in the border city of Laredo, Anthony James Mayers (published as A.J. Mayers), at the age of 29, continues his work as an author, public speaker, and successful businessman in the film industry. He attended public school and graduated at the age of 18. He went on to pursue post-secondary education at one of the top 10 public film schools in the United States: The University of Texas at Austin. By the age of 6, he knew he wanted to become an author given that his favorite subject was English. At the age of 13, he went on a trip to Los Angeles and was amazed by the film industry. He knew then that he wanted to be a part of it. Mayers is now the author of four mystery and suspense books: Among Us, Moonshadow, The Cosmos of Destiny, and Black Sheep’s Meadow. According to Mayers, he enjoys writing fiction because “It’s fun to make up stories and escape reality.” He is currently working on his most recent book, Final Boarding. He became a public speaker after he started promoting his first book. As a public speaker, Mayers mentioned, “It’s important to speak about relatable experiences to the various audiences I speak to so we find a connection even if their dreams and career aspirations are different than mine.” He wanted to share his career stories, how he rose above while being bullied in high school, and inspire young students to follow their dreams.

According to Mayers, “Film is a visual version of storytelling that is born from writing. It’s a natural interest for me because of my love of writing.” He landed his first job at MTV as a production associate/executive assistant. He went on to Paramount Pictures as an executive assistant and was then promoted to Coordinator of International Media. He also worked at Universal Studios as Creative Coordinator and is currently working at Lionsgate as production Manager, AV Creative Services. His goal, for now, is to make his latest book into a movie. He attributes his success to his parents who have always been supportive of his goals and ambitions. “Their trust and confidence was super important to me,” Mayers commented. His modesty is attributed to his parents keeping him down to earth while reminding himself of his upbringing. He lives by the following mantra: “If I haven’t learned something new today, then today has been a waste.”

JUAN FRANCISCO “PANCHO” OCHOA EARNS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES RESOLUTION AWARD The House of Representatives and The Senate presented a Resolution to Juan Francisco “Pancho” Ochoa at The Texas State Capitol on the month of February Since entering the restaurant industry more than four decades ago, Juan Francisco “Pancho” Ochoa has built an impressive legacy. As a successful businessperson and restaurateur, Don “Pancho” Ochoa founded El Pollo Loco® in his native city of Guasave, Mexico, in 1975, featuring a menu based on tradition & family recipes. Within four years, the busi-

ness expanded into a thriving chain of 85 restaurants throughout Mexico. In 1980, the first El Pollo Loco® location in the United States opened its doors in Los Angeles. This dynamic entrepreneur chose Laredo as the place for his next venture, Taco Palenque®, which opened in 1987. The Taco Palenque® chain has since expanded through-

out South Texas. In 2005, Mr. Ochoa made his first foray into full-service restaurants with Palenque Grill, a brand that today includes locations in Laredo, McAllen, and San Antonio. Mr. Ochoa contributed to job creation of thousands in Mexico and the United States and in 2011; Laredo Chamber of Commerce honored him as Business Person of the Year. He has demonstrated the val-

ues of his hard work, perseverance, and resourcefulness in the pursuit of his goals. The House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature honored Juan Francisco “Pancho” Ochoa for his successful career and contribution in the restaurant industry and extended to him, sincere best wishes for the future, recognizing a life full of success with this Resolution.

NETFLIX SERIES FILMING IN LAREDO Hugo Noyola was born in Laredo

HUGO PASSED ALONG SOME OF THE QUESTIONS TO THE DIRECTOR AND HEAD OF PRODUCTION.

and raised in Nuevo Laredo. He acted in four theatrical plays in Laredo. He worked as Production Assistant for UFO Pictures LLC featured film, From the Dead, in 2014 and for the OC Films LLC featured film, Journey, in 2015. He started working as a Production Coordinator for the series Hate in October 2016. His responsibilities include coordinating and supervising all communication as well as commands between the cast and crew. According to Hugo, the experience will help him develop skills in a new frontier, refine his abilities in the media production, and the level of responsibility that the position requires will also help his professional skills for any project. When asked if there was any part of the series that he connected to, he responded,“Yes, although there were some differences in my story, living in Nuevo Laredo for sixteen years and then moving to Laredo, Texas so I can have a better opportunity to grow educationally and professionally; this part of my life was a milestone that my Emily and I needed to progress and reach our goals.”

Rio had the opportunity to interview Production Coordinator, Hugo Noyola, with the input of the Director, Javier Herranz, and Head of Production, Ramiro Munoz, of the new Netflix series Hate.

Hugo Noyola

RIO:What is the series Hate about? Javier: It is about living on the border, surrounded by a love story that reflects the mixture of people from two countries, reflecting and highlighting all the advantages and all the problems brought by the border city. RIO:Why film in Laredo? Hugo, Javier, and Ramiro: We can agree that as a border town, Laredo is enriched with a mixture of two equally important and respected cultures, Mexican and American, and this series revolves around this current topic of immigration. RIO: How often will there be filming in Laredo? Javier: Daily, with two month breaks until we finish. RIO:Why did you decide to get new people from Laredo to act in the series? Javier: We want to portray real and authentic characters from the border. Also, we get the chance to discover new talents from this city. RIO: How many people from Laredo are acting in the series? Javier: Approximately 52. RIO:Where are the other actors from? Javier: Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey, Reynosa, McAllen, and Mexico City

RIO: What message is the series trying to portray to the audience? Javier: The main message is that today the human being is being divided and/or destroyed by hatred and ambition. Hatred gives much to do, but Love produces better results, we seek to highlight the effort of people who leave their lives to provide their families a better standard of living. We want to show that hate only provokes more hate. We should recognize ourselves as human beings and highlight the virtues and values of people on both sides of the border.

Hugo: This series will portray how the battle of egos in people of these two different cultures can easily manipulate them and make them do horrible things in search for power and control over two cities, but it will also portray how the power of love in families, friends, and people who see beyond and actually care, can turn things around for the best interest of everyone no matter how different their cultures may be. RIO: Do you think the series will be a success? Javier: Definitely, it is a totally different story with a fresh outline, a new cast that is not flawed, and the script is unique and extremely appealing. RIO:When is the series expected to air? Javier: Hopefully by September of this year.

It takes about 9 hours by car to travel from Laredo, Texas to San Miguel de Allende, a city located in the eastern part of the state of Guanajuato in Mexico. This magical town is full of numerous galleries, great eats, bars, Mexican artesanías, nice people, and great weather. Its colonial architecture and vibrant colors take you into the heart of Mexico. There are a few top sights that are considered must-sees in San Miguel de Allende that I got to visit during my trip: El Jardín San Miguel de Allende’s central plaza is known as El Jardín. This is the social heart of the city, a venue for fiestas, live music and a popular meeting place. El Jardin is a garden park with neatly trimmed laurel trees at its center. From live music to men getting their shoes shined, the plaza is where much of the town’s action takes place. You’ll find street vendors at every corner selling delicious eats and Mexican artesanías. Street food options include corn in a cob, fresh fruit with chile, ice cream, tacos, and many other delicious treats.
