Massimo Zanovello 19 años / 19 YEARS OLD Massimo Zanovello lleva trabajando aquí cuatro meses y es el camarero más joven del café más famoso de Venecia: el Caffè Florian, en la Plaza de San Marcos. Fundada en 1720, es la cafetería más antigua de Italia. A Massimo le encanta su trabajo. “Cada día conozco a personas de todas partes del mundo, el 95% de nuestros clientes son extranjeros”. Un expreso en la terraza del Florian te costará la friolera de 12,50 euritos, pero Massimo señala todas las pinturas y frescos del bar y la orquesta formada por cinco músicos. “Mira todo este arte”, comenta. “¡Venecia tiene tanta historia! Four months in his job, Massimo Zanovello is the youngest waiter in Venice’s most famous bar, the Caffè Florian on Saint Mark’s Square. Founded in 1720 it is Italy’s oldest café. Massimo loves his job. “Every day I get to meet new people from all over the world, 95% of our clients are foreigners.” At Florian an espresso on the terrace will set you back €12.50, but Massimo points at all the paintings and the fresco’s of the bar and the five man orchestra. “Look at all this art,” he says. “Venice has so much history, it’s at every corner.”

Antonio Forni 37 años / 37 YEARS OLD

Antonio Forni es freelance y se vino de Verona para estudiar historia del arte en Venecia. Ya lleva dieciséis años viviendo aquí y a la pregunta de qué le gusta tanto de esta ciudad, su respuesta no deja de sorprender: “El silencio de Venecia, es increíble. No hay coches, así que tampoco bocinas”, dice. “Y, claro, también todos los canales… ¡y la buena gastronomía!”. Toma otro sorbo de su aperitivo spritz y le viene a la cabeza otro atractivo de Venecia. “Los colores del estuco. Son fantásticos, sobre todo en verano”.

Freelancer Antonio Forni left Verona to study art history in Venice, where he has been living for sixteen years. Asked what it is that makes him love Venice so much, his answer is surprising. “The silence of Venice,” Antonio says, “it’s magnificent. We have no cars, so no claxons either.” “And all our canals, of course. And the wonderful food!” After he takes a sip of his Spritz aperitif, he finds another Venetian attraction. “The colors of the stucco. Especially in summer they are stunning.”

Puede que la Constitución sea una fuente de discordias, pero hay algo en lo que todos estamos de acuerdo: hay que aprovechar su ‘puente’. Y qué mejor lugar que viajar a Atenas, origen de la democracia y cuna de la civilización occidental. En esta ciudad hay tanto que ver (el Partenón, el Barrio de Plaka, el Arco de Adriano, el Parque Nacional de Zapion, el Museo Arqueológico…) que se hace difícil elegir, pero yo he tenido suerte porque cuento con un cicerone. Se llama Nikolaos y me ha invitado a celebrar su santo (el día del Agios Nikolaos o San Nicolás). Cada 6 de diciembre se celebran misas y desfiles en honor de este patrón de los niños, los viajeros y los marineros. Como yo reúno las tres condiciones (me siento como un niño, me encanta viajar y me pirran las varitas de merluza) me va a ser muy fácil integrarme. Lo único que me pidió Nikolaos es que le ayudara a preparar la fiesta en su casa, así que ningún problema. Lo primero fue ir de compras al Mercado Central (Kentriki Agora). Allí encontramos todo lo necesario, y como nos entró hambre, aprovechamos para comer un plato de patsás, una especie de callos que, según ellos, no tienen colesterol pero sí propiedades medicinales. Estoy deseando llegar a casa para contárselo al tirano de mi dietista. De vuelta nos paramos en la cafetería de la planta superior del Museo Benaki, con excelentes vistas a los Jardines Nacionales. En Atenas son mucho de tomar café. Lo puedes pedir sketo (sin azúcar), metro (con dos azucarillos) o gliko (increíblemente dulce). Como a mí me gusta probarlo todo, me pedí uno de cada. Y claro, salí de allí que podría haber corrido hasta Maratón a la pata coja. En un momento estábamos en casa de Nikolaos y nos pusimos a preparar los platos (souvlaki, tzatziki, spanakotiopites...) y las bebidas, especialmente retsina (un vino blanco o rosado con un intenso aroma de resina de pino, ya que es lo que usan para sellar las barricas). Y parece gustarles mucho porque a las dos horas allí no se sostenía nadie de pie. Yo no bebí nada. Quería estar fresco para levantarme temprano y aprovechar el día siguiente. Pero cuando llegó el momento de irnos, Nikolaos me contó una curiosa tradición. Me dijo que en Atenas, al salir de una fiesta, como muestra de agradecimiento hacia el anfitrión, era costumbre que, si alguien no había bebido, igualmente fingiera estar completamente borracho. A mí me pareció extraño, pero no iba a ser yo quien rompiera la costumbre, así que bajé las escaleras simulando una buena cogorza, caminé como un zombi por el parking y entré en el coche de Nikolaos con fingida dificultad. Mientras esperaba, vi como los demás bajaban por la escalera de incendios hasta la parte trasera del edificio, donde tenían sus vehículos aparcados. En ese momento un policía apareció al lado de mi coche y con cara de "te he pillado, chaval" me dijo que soplara para el test de alcoholemia. Yo accedí y, claro, di 0,0%. "¿Cómo es posible?", dijo el policía. Entonces lo entendí: "Agente, creo que esta noche me ha tocado a mí hacer de señuelo". ¡Ay!, San Nicolás, piensa mal y acertarás.

It may be that our Constitution is a source of discord, but there is something in it we can all agree on: the bit about making the most of our public holidays. And what better way to do so than to visit Athens, the birthplace of democracy and the cradle of Western civilisation. In this city there is so much to see (the Parthenon, the Plaka neighbourhood, Hadrian’s Arch, the Zapion National Park and Palace, the Archaeological Museum…) that it is difficult to choose. However, I was lucky, since I had my own guide. His name was Nikolaos and he invited me to celebrate his saint’s day (Agios Nikolaos, or St Nicholas). On the 6th of December they hold masses and processions in honour of the patron saint of children, travellers and sailors. Since I fit into all three of those categories (I feel like a child, I like travelling and I really go crazy for fish fingers) I though I would fit right in. The only thing Nikolaos asked me was to help him organise the party at his house; no problem. The first thing was to go shopping at the central market (Kentriki Agora). We found everything we needed, and since we were feeling a bit hungry we took the opportunity to have a dish of patsás, a kind of tripe soup which, according to the Athenians, has no cholesterol but plenty of medicinal properties. I couldn’t wait to tell my dietician back in Spain. On the way back, we stopped at the café on the top floor of the Benaki Museum, which has excellent views of the National Gardens. In Athens they love their coffee. You can have a sketo (without sugar), metro (with two sugars) or gliko (incredibly sweet). Since I like to try everything, I asked for one of each. Of course, coming out into the street, I could have hopped all the way to Marathon. In no time we got to Nikolaos’ home and we started to prepare the food (souvlaki, tzatziki, spanakotiopites…) and the drinks, particularly retsina (which is a white or rosé wine with a strong scent of pine resin, which is what is used to seal the barrels). It went down really well, since after a couple of hours nobody at the party could stand up. I didn’t have anything to drink, since I wanted to be fresh, get up early and make the most of the next day. But when the time came for Nikolaos to drive me home, he told me about a strange custom. He told me that in Athens when you leave a party, to thank the host you had to either be drunk, or at least pretend to be drunk. It seemed odd, but I’m not the one to break with tradition, so I stumbled down the stairs, walked like a zombie to the car park and struggled to get into Nikolaos’ car. While I was waiting, I saw all the others coming down the fire escape to the back of the building, where they had parked their cars. Just then, a policeman appeared beside the car and, with a face that said “Now I’ve got you” he asked me to breathe into the breathalyser. I agreed, and of course it showed clean. “How can that be?” said the policeman, puzzled. Then I understood, “officer, I think tonight it was my turn to be the bait.” Ah, St Nicholas, it’s best that you never know…

From that time, it was possible to fly from Helsinki to Gran Canaria or Banjul to Moscow without changing carrier, and with a single ticket. With its networked flights, Vueling once again broke new ground in terms of low cost travel by offering more than just point-to-point transit.

Además, las conexiones son fáciles de hacer: se realizan en la Terminal 1 de Barcelona El Prat, donde la compañía dispone de dos oficinas de tránsito exclusivas para conexiones (tal y como se explica en la ilustración). En cuanto a los tiempos de escala, depende de tus prioridades: si tienes prisa, puedes hacerla en 35 minutos, y si prefieres aprovechar la ocasión para conocer Barcelona, dispones de hasta 12 horas. Tú decides.

R El Ekeberg Sculpture Park no es un museo cualquiera. Para empezar, está abierto 24

horas y se encuentra en un parque. Y para continuar, tiene el honor de albergar obras de Marina Abramovic, Rodin o Salvador Dalí, entre muchos otros artistas de primera línea. Su peculiaridad no termina aquí ya que todas las esculturas son homenajes o interpretaciones del cuerpo y el papel de la mujer. Las 25 hectáreas de un parque repleto de arte son posibles gracias a la iniciativa del coleccionista Christian Ringnes, que ha gastado casi 36 millones de euros de su patrimonio personal para que todo el mundo pueda disfrutar de este espacio libremente.

Una de las actuaciones que sitúan a esta universidad por delante de otras del mundo es que ofrecen las grabaciones en una segunda lengua, un servicio pensado para los alumnos extranjeros.

Una vez grabado el contenido, y gracias a complicados algoritmos matemáticos, la app detecta las palabras y los temas más recurrentes. Pero el plan de León va más allá: pretende crear la mayor base de datos de sueños del mundo para que la comunidad científica pueda estudiarla. Un producto que, por cierto, no solo no el sabor de los platos, sino que mantiene todos sus nutrientes, algo que valora mucho un cocinero que en otro tiempo fue estudiante de Medicina. La temporada 2013 del Formule Jeunes ya ha empezado, se alargará hasta mayo de 2014 y permitirá a los menores de 35 años acceder a menús en restaurantes de todas las categorías que tienen la intención de que conozcan los locales y se habitúen a ellos.

En la parte este de la ciudad, encontrarás un depósito lleno de letras que en otros tiempos han decorado las fachadas de edificios y han seducido a la gente a comprar. El depósito lleva el nombre de Buchstabenmuseum, Museo de las Letras en alemán. Sus dueñas, Barbara Dechant y Anja Schulze, están enamoradas de las letras, grandes y pequeñas, en negrita y cursiva. Hace ocho años, las dos berlinesas empezaron a rescatar letras que iban a terminar en el basurero y las guardan en su museo para la eternidad. La letra más famosa de la colección, de 500 caracteres, es la E del cine Le Gamaar en la película Malditos Bastardos de Quentin Tarantino, pero seguramente descubrirás más joyas de tipografía.

Prepararse para asistir a la ópera es diferente en Copenhague. Lo comprobé en mi primera visita a la ciudad. Llegar en barco desde el centro de la ciudad al islote Holmen, donde se encuentra la Nueva Ópera, forma parte del ritual de la perfecta velada musical. Esta se completa una vez dentro, cuando la Royal Danish Opera comienza a interpretar versiones de los clásicos bajo el techo del moderno edificio de Henning Larsen. Simplemente inolvidable.

In the eastern part of the city you can find a warehouse full of letters which once decorated the facades of buildings and persuaded people to buy certain products. The warehouse is called the Buchstabenmuseum, or Museum of Letters. Its owners, Barbara Dechant and Anja Schulze, have fallen in love with letters, big and small, bold and italic. Eight years ago, the two Berlinettes started to rescue letters that were going to end up in the trash and they have stored them in their museum for posterity. The most famous letter of the collection of 500 is the E from the cinema Le Gamaar in the movie Inglourious Basterds by Quentin Tarantino, but you will discover plenty more typographic gems. Going to the opera is different in Copenhagen. I found out on my first visit to the city. Getting from the city centre to the little island of Holmen, where the New Opera House is located, forms part of the ritual of a perfect musical evening. This becomes complete inside, where the Royal Danish Opera performs versions of the classics under the roof of this modern building by Henning Larsen. Unforgettable.

39º. Si el termómetro no se equivocaba era el día más caluroso de lo que llevábamos de verano. Eran poco más de las cuatro de la tarde y ahí estábamos nosotros (mi hermano, mi mujer y yo) en plena calle Sierpes. Los toldos de las azoteas de los edificios amortiguaban la potencia del sol lo justo para dejarnos disfrutar de una de las calles más transitadas y con más historia de Sevilla. Y, vaya si lo hicimos...

Fui a Lyon para practicar esquí aconsejada por aficionados de confianza que me aseguraron que allí iba a encontrar las mejores pistas del mundo. Y, sinceramente, creo que la definición no es exagerada. Aunque lo que de verdad agradezco de aquella recomendación es que me permitió conocer una ciudad extraordinaria donde más he disfrutado de mi otra gran pasión (junto al esquí): la gastronomía.

Blanco, blanco y más blanco. En Sant Lluis ese color lo inunda todo. Muchos aseguran que el municipio es el más blanco de la ya de por sí blanca isla de Menorca. Y yo añadiría que el que tiene más encanto. Las estrechas calles y las casas de formas redondeadas y blancas (por supuesto) de localidades como Binibeca o las paradisíacas calas de Binidalí o Biniparratx le hace merecedor de este título.

The canopies at roof level kept the sun out so we could enjoy one of the busiest, most historical streets in Seville. And we certainly did...

I went to Lyon to go skiing, since people whom I trust on the matter told me it had the best slopes in the world. Now I have been, I honestly think that is true. I am also grateful to those who gave me the recommendation because it meant that I visited an extraordinary city where I could indulge my other great passion: food and drink.

White, white and more white. In Sant Lluis, the colour is everywhere. Many say that this district is the whitest on the already white island of Menorca. I would add that it is also the most beautiful. It earns that distinction because of the narrow streets and rounded white houses of places like Binibeca and the beautiful bays of Binidalí and Biniparratx.
