H

abría que remontarse al año 1862 para situar el nacimiento de este edificio. Por aquellos tiempos, Jacques Offenbach se ocupaba de la programación que se llevaba a cabo en su interior. Los momentos dorados del teatro pasaron y la sede cultural quedó abandonada en la década de los 80. Sin embargo, incrédulos del mundo, la resurrección existe, aunque haya que trabajársela.

Para que La Gaîté Lyrique haya renacido, han tenido que emplearse más de 7 años en reformarlo y convertirlo en lo que es: el mayor centro de arte digital de Francia.

El proyecto de rehabilitación ha sido dirigido por Manuelle Gautrand en torno a la idea de ‘una caja contenida en una caja’. Gautrand aisló diferentes espacios dentro de la estructura del viejo teatro convirtiendo el lugar en una sede multifuncional que apuesta por la versatilidad y la flexibilidad a través de divisiones móviles y superficies amplias.

La Gaîté Lyrique se ha concebido como un lugar para el uso ciudadano en el que el visitante no es un sujeto pasivo que se limita a pasear por los espacios expositivos. E

n la desembocadura del río Garona aparece Burdeos, cuyos nobles edificios asomados a su orilla relampaguean dorados bajo el sol de la tarde. La ciudad es sinónimo de burguesía, de vino y, sobre todo, de Leonor de Aquitania. Extraordinaria mujer nacida a comienzos del XII. El azar de la muerte prematura de su hermano mayor la convirtió en heredera del ducado y luego en reina del resto de Francia por su matrimonio con un tonto enamorado llamado Luis VII al que, en contra de su voluntad, acompañaría en la Segunda Cruzada.

Esta desastrosa acción religiosa militar supondría la pérdida del reino cristiano de Jerusalén. Fue promovida por el papa Eugenio III y arengada por la oratoria de Bernardo de Claraval, posteriormente ascendido a santo gracias al éxito de su reclutamiento. “Abrí la boca, hablé e inmediatamente los cruzados se multiplicaron hasta

el infinito. Las aldeas y villas están vacías; apenas hay un hombre por cada siete mujeres. Por todas partes se ven viudas, cuyos maridos aún viven”.

Los camareros van de un lado a otro gritando la mercancía que llevan en sus platos como si fuese una puja en la lonja. La diferencia es que, aquí, los peces ya están pasados por el intenso calor de la cocina.

En el restaurante El Tintero no hay carta. El menú se decide en función de la apariencia del plato y el grito que mejor suena. Los camareros

van sacando arroz, ensalada, chopitos, bogavante, boquerones, cazón, calamaritos, gambones, navajas, rosada, sardinas... o el botín que ha llegado en barca, ese día, del Mediterráneo.

She says she likes the music, she likes the festival, that she likes Barcelona and the food, oh and the people… In fact, is there anything missing from such a wave of love? Communicating through a mix of smiles and monosyllables, she does not (and cannot) hide her nationality, but says her age is a secret.

n las calles del presente hay lugares infiltrados del pasado. La actualidad va borrando lo antiguo como si fuera una rémora maldita. Pero siempre hay unos pocos, tan solo unos pocos, que resisten y se blindan ante el cambio incesante al que obliga el transcurrir del tiempo.

La decisión no es fácil. O, a veces, ni siquiera hay decisión. Es algo que ocurre. Un lugar ha de ser muy valiente para dejar que el tiempo siga su ritmo y hacer como si la cosa no fuera con él. Pero, pasadas unas décadas en el que a ese espacio habrán caído todo tipo de calificativos, mejores y peores,

Today obliterates history as if it were an inconvenient obstacle. Yet a few, although only a few, resist, struggling against the unceasing change demanded by the passage of time.

The decision is not easy. Sometimes, there is not even a decision; it is just something that happens. A place has to have courage to stand up to time’s rhythm, and not surrender to it. As the decades pass, that site comes in for all kinds of high and low words regarding its stand against time.

Then, finally, eminence is assured; the place receives the status of messenger from the past, and now conservation comes as homage to the memory of what has gone.

In Vigo, there are dozens of places that have resisted the ravage of time. Places that

FARMACIA BORRA JO La Farmacia Borrajo abrió en los años 30 y se mantuvo en manos de la familia Borrajo hasta su traspaso en el año 2009. “En su interior hay una impresionante estantería de caoba hecha a medida, concebida específicamente para dar servicio a aquellas boticas que acostumbraban a mostrar sus productos en frascos cuidadosamente rotulados”, especifica Romero. “Cuentan que durante la guerra civil, en Vigo tan solo se produjo un disparo. Fue en la calle frente a esta farmacia y la bala terminó incrustada en la mano de una de las figuras de la estantería. Nunca llegó a extraerse, y allí sigue setenta y tantos años después”.

Farmacia Borrajo was founded in the 1930s and was in the hands of the Borrajo family until it was sold in 2009. “Inside there is some amazing made-to-measure mahogany shelving, designed especially for apothecaries to display products in those wonderful labelled jars,” says Romero. “It is said that during the Civil War, only one shot was fired in Vigo. It happened in the street outside this pharmacy and the bullet ended up embedded in the hand of one of the shelves’ figures. It was never taken out, and so it is still there, over seventy years later.”

Joyería Har do (Hnos Alonso Ruiz de Ocenda) La joyería HARDO abre en 1959 para tomar el relevo de una de las joyerías míticas y más antiguas de Vigo, La Giralda, abierta en 1918. En la actualidad, la mayoría de sus escaparates están vacíos y el que fue el único escaparate giratorio de Vigo ha dejado de funcionar. Su propietario actual es Celestino Alonso Fernández, nieto de los fundadores de La Giralda.

Joyería Hardo opened in 1959; it was following on from a legend, and one of the oldest jewellers in Vigo, La Giralda, which dated back to 1918. Currently, most of its shop windows are empty, and what was once Vigo’s only rotating display no longer works. Its current owner is Celestino Alonso Fernández, the grandson of La Giralda’s founders.

LAS TRES BBB Las Tres BBB abrió en 1915 y hoy en día hace gala de ser el local en activo más antiguo de Vigo. En los años 30 era un local de referencia internacional que competía con la Villa de París o el Maison Blanc. En sus paredes aún se puede encontrar cartelería histórica de Lois, Lee o un cartel original de Confecciones Laguna, la primera empresa de vaqueros de España en 1950. En la tienda se conservan, también, joyas de la alta costura, como ejemplares intactos de las medias de cristal Pompeya, del año 1959, aunque solo para disfrute de los dueños.

Las Tres BBB opened in 1915 and today can claim to be Vigo’s oldest working shop. In the 1930s it had an international reputation, competing with La Ville de Paris and La Maison Blanc. Its walls still display historic posters for brands like Lois and Lee, with an interesting example from Confecciones Laguna, Spain’s first jeans company, founded in 1950. The shop also has some fine haute couture originals, including some Pompeya sheer tights from 1959; these, however, are kept away from public sight.

Mantequería arjeriz En los años 20 Mantequería Arjeriz era un distribuidor de productos lácteos provenientes de la Granja Arjeriz, precursora de LARSA. Dice Díez que “se desconoce su fecha exacta de apertura porque no fue hasta 1968 cuando D. Castor Rodríguez da de alta la tienda en el registro civil”.

En el año 66, LARSA se desliga totalmente de la tienda y el establecimiento es cedido a su actual dueño, en aquel entonces empleado de la tienda. A día de hoy, la familia de Juan Antonio Marcote es la responsable del negocio y la pequeña tienda se ha especializado en vinos y licores. Los Rolling Stones han hecho una parada en Mantequería Arjeriz en uno de sus conciertos en Vigo.

In the 1920s, Mantequería Arjeriz distributed dairy products from Granja Arjeriz, the predecessor of today’s LARSA. According to Díez, “we don’t know when exactly it opened, because Castor Rodríguez didn’t register the shop until 1968.”

In 1966, LARSA separated from the outlet, which was transferred to its current owner, who at that time was a shop employee. Today, Juan Antonio Marcote and his family run the business and the small shop, which now specialises in wines and spirits. The Rolling Stones stopped off here when visiting Vigo on tour.

Romero tells that this stationer’s, located on Calle Príncipe, has historically been “very important for Galician emigrants who were looking for gifts that were hard to find in Argentina or Mexico: missals, religious prints, crucifixes… Before budget shops started to get involved, this stationer’s was one of the first to sell carnival costumes, and they even imported Italian masks. In the last 20 years, the shop has been focussing on old-fashioned tinplate toys. The Galician painter, Laxeiro, bought his fountain pens here, and the owners have kept the pages where he used to test pen strokes.”

Hoy volamos a la isla desde 11 destinos (Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia, Amsterdam, Milán, París, Roma y Toulouse) y, como siempre, nos seguimos vinculando a su animada vida social. Colaboramos con la discoteca Pacha Ibiza y con DJ´s tan emblemáticos como David Guetta. Este año, además, hemos querido unirnos a la vida diurna de la isla y nos hemos asociado al mercadillo hippy de Las Dalias, que desde 1985 ofrece cada sábado un amplio abanico de originales productos.

Vueling lives Ibiza Barcelona-Ibiza was our inaugural flight. Today we fly to the island from 11 destinations (Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, Seville, Valencia, Amsterdam, Milan, Paris, Rome and Toulouse) and, as ever, continue to be closely involved with its vibrant social scene. We collaborate with Pacha Ibiza nightclub and emblematic DJs such as David Guetta.

This year we also wanted to take part in the daytime life of the island, so we’ve joined forces with Las Dalias hippy market – it’s been offering a wide range of original products every Saturday since 1985.

Fútbol y Castellers en Toulouse Nos gusta relacionarnos con la gente de las ciudades donde volamos. En Toulouse lo hicimos como más nos gusta: de forma original y diferente. Llevamos un pedacito de la cultura catalana al estadio del equipo local de 1ª División, donde el Toulouse FC se enfrentaba al Olympique Lyonnais. Más de cien castellers de la Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls animaron al público y jugadores haciendo sus castillos humanos, primero en las puertas del estadio y luego en el centro del campo. No sabemos si influyó, pero el Toulouse FC ganó por 2-0.

Football and Castellers in Toulouse We like to connect with people in the cities we fly to. In Toulouse we did it in the way we enjoy the most: with a different and original approach. We took a little chunk of Catalan culture to the stadium of the local 1st Division team, where Toulouse FC were up against Olympique Lyonnais. Over 100 castellers from Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls entertained the public and players making human towers. First, at the stadium entrance and then in the middle of the pitch. We don’t know if it impacted on the result, but Toulouse FC won 2-0.

En diciembre de 2004 despegó el primer vueling desde Bilbao. Desde entonces, más de 3 millones de pasajeros han volado con nosotros desde esta ciudad, que hoy conectamos de forma directa con 9 destinos y otros 34 en conexión desde Barcelona. Superar la barrera de los 3 millones merecía un brindis con sus protagonistas: los bilbaínos. Y por eso el pasado mayo habilitamos un espacio efímero, el ‘Living Vueling, Eskerrik Asko Bilbao’ en uno de los lugares más emblemáticos de la ciudad, el centro cultural La Alhóndiga, donde compartimos con ellos buena música y un cóctel especial creado para la ocasión.

In December 2004, the first vueling took off from Bilbao. Since then, over 3 million passengers have flown with us from this city, which today has direct connections with 9 destinations and flights to 34 other destinations via Barcelona. Passing that 3 million mark was cause to raise our glasses together with the key players in this success: the people of Bilbao. That’s why, during May, we set up the ‘Living Vueling, Eskerrik Asko Bilbao’ space in the Alhóndiga cultural centre - one of the city’s iconic locations – where we could share great music and a cocktail specially created for the occasion.

On 3rd October 1991 Bradimir Astan was sheltering in the basement of his bar, in Dubrovnik’s old town, waiting for the bombing to cease. His wife and daughter had already fled to the forests outside the city. Bradimir had refused to abandon his little hostel in Za Rokom Street, but two explosions close by forced him to change his mind and he ended up taking flight, in search of safer ground.

Racing along the narrow streets of the old town, Bradimir suddenly found himself face to face with a girl of about 15, frightened and running in the opposite direction.

They looked at one another for barely an instant. The girl was crying and her expression that of absolute panic. Immediately, she shot off up the street. She seemed to be heading towards the main square, perhaps to look for her family or to take refuge in the church.

Bradimir remembered the instructions that he had read about avoiding strategic points, and figured that the clock tower could be among the bombers’ objectives.

He ran straight after the girl. He yelled at her to stop, but the girl didn’t understand him and felt that she was being chased: she

Dubrovnik is tourism, gastronomy, the sea, friendly people, and history. No-one talks about the bombing any more. There’s no need, nor would it do any good. Those that lived through it simply keep the experience to themselves.

Bladimir recovered and, as a way of putting all that had happened behind him, decided to help, with his own hands, to recover the city’s walls and its past. And so, he spent many years rebuilding, until his troubled leg forced him to give up.

He started by refurbishing the old hostel, which is now run by his daughter and is one of the liveliest in the town centre.

The building still bears the scars of the 1991 bombardment. Bradimir tries to help as far as he can, but generally dedicates his time to chatting with guests.

En lugar de admirar la depurada técnica de los cuadros de Velázquez o el sobrecogedor dramatismo que puede llegar a desprender un bloque de mármol tras pasar por el cincel de Miguel Angel, en el museo Domus los ‘objetos a exponer’ serían los propios artistas. Un ejemplo es Veni, Vidi, ¡Bici!, en el que los usuarios se sientan en una bicicleta, para pedalear mientras un esqueleto realiza sus mismos movimientos.

Situado en el Palacete de Santa Margarita, el primer museo interactivo de titularidad pública de España dispone de un planetario y de tres plantas donde se realizan exposiciones temporales y todo tipo de experimentos físicos. En el hueco de la escalera que une los tres pisos oscila un Péndulo de Foucault. Y en la zona de los módulos interactivos el lema es rotundo: prohibido no tocar. La ciencia se respira en todas y cada una de sus estancias…

Pero también fuera del edificio. De hecho, el Parque de Santa Margarita acoge, entre otras sorpresas, un manzano clónico, el que inspiró a Newton para descubrir la Ley de la Gravedad.

Plutón, razonaron, no es un planeta sino una roca bastante grande —mucho más pequeño, por ejemplo, que la Luna— en los límites del citado Sistema. En consecuencia, Plutón quedó degradado a la categoría de ‘plutoide’ y la familia solar pasó de 9 miembros a solo 8.

Por increíble que parezca, hace 150 años el Sistema Solar llegó a tener casi el doble de planetas de los que tiene ahora: 15. Más vale que expliquemos esto para no llevar la confusión a la mente del lector. El número de planetas que orbitan el Sol no ha variado en los últimos millones de años y, previsiblemente, no lo harán en otros tantos millones. Lo que sí ha cambiado ha sido la contabilidad hecha por nosotros, los humanos, desde este pequeño punto azul pálido que es la Tierra.

El número de planetas fue fijado en seis por Ptolomeo, el primer astrónomo solvente, en el 150 a.C., y fue

R The coach sets off every Monday, in search of the waves. The luggage hold, packed with surfboards. Destination: any beach in Galicia or the north of Portugal. The Surf Road Experience departs from Vigo and heads for the spot where the wind lashes the coast, ideal for surfing. ubidón”, según el diccionario de la Real Academia Española, es la “elevación rápida y fuerte que experimenta algo”. Pero un subidón, hablando de música dance, es esa parte donde la intensidad de la música va aumentando, aumentando, aumentando, hasta que llega un momento en que explota y lo que sube es la adrenalina en la pista de baile. Es lo mejor de la canción, el clímax, el instante en el que el disfrute es máximo y uno siente que puede volar, aunque solo dura unos segundos, y se desvanece…, hasta que suena la siguiente canción.

Uno de los DJ’s con más éxito del momento, David Guetta, que sabe cómo darle al público en la pista lo que necesita, está dispuesto a llevar al extremo el significado de la palabra subidón. Pero, además de puestas de sol sobre el Mare Nostrum que quitan el hipo, en este archipiélago, integrante de las Cícladas meridionales, uno se puede permitir dar un bocado —literalmente— a la esencia de la cocina mediterránea. Solo tiene que pedir pseftokeftedes.

Las pseftokeftedes —no confundir con las psarokeftedes (albóndigas de pescado), ni con las kolokithokeftedes (albóndigas de calabacín)— son albóndigas vegetales (normalmente de tomate) y, aunque todas ellas son inequívocamente griegas, las primeras son típicas de Santorini. Una isla con una producción agrícola caracterizada por media docena de especialidades, como es el caso de sus dulces tomates cherries con los que se elabora este plato.

Las pseftokeftedes reúnen algunos de los ingredientes básicos de la cocina mediterránea, como el aceite de oliva o la harina de trigo, pero también buena parte de sus aderezos más característicos: el perejil, el orégano, la menta y, en un alarde de orientalismo, la canela. Todo ello da lugar a un plato sumamente especiado y sumamente… vegetariano; algo que muchas veces agradece el estómago del viajero.

Lo mejor, visitarlo en invierno para experimentar la sensación de estar guarecido en un iglú transparente… Aunque es en primavera cuando se puede disfrutar de sus terrazas... En definitiva, cualquier época del año es ideal para visitarlo.

Si existe un lugar donde el arte romano y el cristiano conviven en excelente armonía, ese es la capital de Italia. El templo romano, la Catedral de San Juan de Letrán, es el que más me sorprendió y por motivos muy distintos. Lo primero que me llamó la atención es que tanto niños como mayores pegasen su boca y orejas a las columnas. Tardé en darme cuenta que lo que hacían era comunicarse con otras personas situadas, a su vez, en otras columnas. Mi madre y yo probamos. Nos colocamos en columnas lo suficientemente alejadas... ¡y funcionó! Aunque no sé si fue por las propiedades ‘sonoras’ de la columnata de la iglesia o por el elevado tono de voz de mi madre…

It could be defined as a centre for the arts, but Wolubilis is much more. Its white façade offers a starck contrast with the traditional Brussels architecture. But the important thing is what goes on inside.

Here, you can do a little bit of everything: take one of the courses on offer, learn to dance; enjoy a salad in one of the centre’s restaurants; or flick through the books in any of its nine different bookshops. The best thing is to visit in winter and enjoy the feeling of being sheltered within a transparent igloo… On the other hand, it’s in spring when you can enjoy the open-air cafes… In summary, any time of year is ideal to pay this place a visit.

If there is a place where Roman and Christian art live together in perfect harmony, then that place is the Italian capital. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the Roman cathedral which surprised me the most, and for very different reasons. The first thing that caught my attention was the number of people – children and adults alike – with their mouths or ears pressed to the columns inside. It was a while before I realised that they were communicating with other people standing at other columns. My mother and I tried it…and it worked! Although I’m still not sure if it was because of the sound-carrying properties of the church’s columns or my mum’s elevated tone of voice…

Si tuviera que señalar un lugar especial en Lanzarote, uno que seguro entraría, al menos, en la lista de finalistas sería la cueva de Lagomar en Nazaret. Tiempo atrás fue la casa del actor Omar Shariff en la isla. Hoy, además de un museo y un restaurante, es un buen lugar para disfrutar de una conversación con los amigos tomando una copa y con buena música de fondo.

Lo más parecido a una máquina del tiempo que hay en Malta podría ser la ciudad amurallada de Mdina. A unos 15 km al oeste de Valletta, la ciudad mantiene el encanto de lo medieval gracias a su cuidada arquitectura a base de piedra y a la paz que se percibe en sus estrechas calles. Mi rincón favorito en este lugar es un jardín de té que eleva las espectaculares vistas de su terraza hacia la costa y permite ver en el horizonte tanto a Valletta como St. Julian’s o Sliema. Se llama Fontanella y queda, entrando por la puerta principal de la ciudad, a mano derecha.

De nuevo en Valencia, y la siempre esperada visita a la Librería Anticuaria Rafael Solaz, ubicada en la céntrica calle de San Fernando.

Hojear libros antiguos en este viejo establecimiento no solo te transporta a otras épocas. También puede hacerte perder la noción del tiempo y encontrar esa pieza tan buscada y deseada para tu biblioteca, algo fácil contando con la experta atención del hijo de don Rafael. Casi llega a darte pena tener que irte.

If I had to name a special place in Lanzarote, then one that would at least make it to the list of finalists, for sure, is Lagomar Cave in Nazaret. It used to be the island home of actor, Omar Shariff. Today, as well as a museum and a restaurant, it’s a great spot to have a drink and enjoy chatting to friends, with good music in the background.

The closest thing to a time machine in Malta could well be the walled city of Mdina. Some 15km west of Valletta, the city maintains its medieval charm thanks to its well-conserved stone architecture and the peaceful feel of its narrow streets.

My favourite spot is a tea garden: from the terrace, there are spectacular views towards the coast and you can make out Valletta, St. Julian’s and Sliema on the horizon. It’s called Fontanella and it’s on the right hand side as you come in through the city’s main gate.

Valencia once again and the muchawaited visit to Rafael Solaz Antiquarian Bookshop on Calle San Fernando in the city centre. Flicking through antique books in this long-established store not only takes you back in time, but makes you loose track of it altogether. When you come upon that edition so long soughtafter for your library – an easy task with expert attention from Rafael’s son – you almost feel sorry that it’s time to leave.

London Brick Lane es uno de los barrios que ha visto cómo su vida cultural se ha incrementado de manera exponencial gracias a una invasión de artistas y jóvenes con ganas de hacer cosas. Como enfermo de la música que soy, allí me lo paso como un enano en Rough Trade, una tienda de discos que tiene el más impresionante catálogo de Europa en música independiente de todos los estilos. El negocio tiene su sede en una amplia nave con toneladas de material e, incluso en ocasiones, hacen conciertos de directo.

Brick Lane is one of those neighbourhoods that has seen its cultural life boom thanks to an invasion of artists and young people keen to create. Music junkie that I am, I have an amazing time at Rough Trade, a music store with the most incredible selection in Europe of all styles of independent music. The flagship store is in a huge converted factory, with tonnes of material and, occasionally, they even have live gigs.

Fuerteven- Paris tura Más allá del sol, la playa y los deportes acuáticos de Fuerteventura me llevo una visita muy peculiar. En la Cueva de los Llanos, en Villaverde, tenéis una excursión superamena, de unos 45 minutos, por un tubo volcánico (no apto para claustrofóbicos) guiada por un experto. Conoceréis a unos habitantes únicos en el mundo: diminutas arañas ciegas que solo se encuentran en esa cueva. Y no hace falta equipamiento, ya que con el precio de la entrada (5 euros) te proporcionan un casco con luz para que puedas seguir sin dificultad el camino, incluso en chanclas.

Aside from the sunshine, the beach and water sports, one very peculiar visit in Fuerteventura really stuck with me. It’s the Llanos Cave in Villaverde, and the tour’s great fun: 45 minutes inside a lava tube (not appropriate if you’re claustrophobic) with an expert guide. You’ll discover the cave’s inhabitants, which are unique in the world: tiny blind spiders that can only be found here. You don’t need any equipment either, as the ticket price (€5) includes a hard hat with a light so that you can find your way along the path with no problems, even in flip-flops.

Me pasa cada vez que voy a París.

Comienzo a caminar para coger el metro y, al final, lo que hago es saltarme las estaciones y caminar kilómetros y kilómetros. En una de estas expediciones fui a parar a una tienda de cómics que me pareció muy chula (y espero que a vosotros también). Les Super Héros se encuentra en la rue Saint Martin, a un paso del centro Pompidou.

Contiene todo lo habido y por haber en relación al octavo arte. Eso sí, la gran mayoría estaba en francés. Si no te sirve el material en este idioma, al menos, te garantizo que el lugar guarda bastante encanto.

In one of these expeditions I wound up at a comic store that, for me, was just brilliant. (I hope you think so too.) Les Super Héros is on Rue Saint Martin, a stone’s throw away from the Pompidou.

They have absolutely everything related to comic art, though most of it is in French.

If material in this language is no good for you, I can guarantee, at least, that the place is really charming in itself.
