Y es que, tanto las dimensiones como el cargamento de la nave han permitido ponerlo en relación con la familia de los grandes veleros de comercio que durante las primeras décadas del Imperio navegaban desde la provincia romana de la Bética hacia Roma.

Las instituciones involucradas en el estudio del pecio Bou Ferrer han querido compartir esta maravilla con el mundo. Por eso, durante el verano, de forma organizada, se desciende a las profundidades para contemplar de cerca los restos del mercante romano. El principal objetivo es que los visitantes se conviertan en cómplices de la salvaguarda del patrimonio histórico al comprender su valor y fragilidad.

The letters are an abbreviation for Imperator Germanicus Avgustus, showing that the ingots belonged to the emperor, almost certainly one of the Julio-Claudian line. “They would have been struck by an agent or civil servant of the empire, who must have had a high rank to be responsible for these important stamps. This evidence shows that the Bou Ferrer is not just any old boat; it had a very special owner. The freight was travelling to the ruler of Rome,” says Carlos de Juan. Future excavations might determine whether the owner was Claudius, Caligula or Nero.

The Bou Ferrer is currently the largest Roman ship under excavation. “The results of the investigations carried out up until 2014, which have involved the disinterested contributions of various international experts, have shown the great value of the site,” says Carlos de Juan. Details about the large cargo and the ship itself have given us a more detailed picture of the great trading ships that sailed from Baetica to Rome.

The institutions involved in the study of the Bou Ferrer wreck want to share this marvel with the world. So during the summer there will be organised tours to the bottom of the sea to show the remains of this Roman merchantman up close.

The main goals will be to help make visitors aware of the need to protect this historical heritage and to understand its value and fragility.

To touch a Roman ship, almost 2,000 years old, to see amphorae full of Roman food, ingots of lead, all on a ship that once belonged to a Roman Emperor... and it will be open to everyone. Just get your scuba gear!

Solo 120 podrán competir oficialmente, pero para la organización la convocatoria ha sido el mejor regalo de cumpleaños.

_ Craft university publishing, with an ecological side R La idea surgió en Buenos Aires en 2001 de la mano de Eloísa Cartonera, que se propuso crear editoriales que reutilizaran el cartón y trabajaran sus productos de manera totalmente artesanal. Ahora la idea ha llegado a la Universidad de Vigo, que se convierte así en el primer centro de educación superior en editar sus libros de esta manera. La editorial resultante del proyecto se llama Astromántica Cartoneira y se ha estrenado con la edición de Las grandes alamedas, una obra que recoge las últimas palabras del presidente Salvador Allende transmitidas al pueblo chileno por la radio el 11 de septiembre de 1973.

Los entomólogos recibieron un aviso de avistamiento en las Islas Molucas, lugar al que viajaron y en el que encontraron varios ejemplares. Un segundo viaje les sirvió para

confirmar su existencia y grabar un documental en el que narran su historia y que se puede ver en el Museo de Toulouse.

Bautizado como católico, pero educado como protestante, el buen rey fue ora católico ora protestante, y así cambió de bando cuatro o cinco veces. Nos encontrábamos en Londres un sábado y no queríamos perdernos el mercado de Portobello Road. Un lugar recomendado en todas las guías que sorprende por la diversidad de puestos con antigüedades y objetos curiosos. Hay muchos también de comida, pero os aconsejo que toméis un batido en un lugar ‘secreto’, porque la fachada es toda negra, sin ningún cartel, y solo se intuye que puede ser un establecimiento de este tipo por el escaparate. El ritmo dentro del local es increíble ¡y los batidos, para chuparse los dedos! Si tenéis oportunidad, acercaos al Portobello Road, 127 ¡y disfrutad!

Aquellos a los que su trabajo los obliga a estar on the road constantemente podrán apreciar, espero, el pequeño momento de calidad que me regaló esta hermosa ciudad. Cuando tu escala es de más de 5 horas y dejaste el hotel hace 7, encontrar un pequeño rincón donde poder trabajar puede resultar misión imposible. No ocurrió así aquel día. En aquella ocasión anduve por los límites del Albaicín, donde me encontré con una humilde y linda terraza junto a la iglesia de Santa Ana. No solo el té de jazmín me templó el cuerpo, sino que, además, pude gozar de una preciosa vista.

Finding ourselves in London on a Saturday, we didn’t want to miss the market on Portobello Road. It’s recommended in all the guidebooks and the range of stalls selling antiques and curios is incredible. There are lots of food stalls too, but I especially recommend stopping for a milkshake in a “secret” place. Secret, because the outside is painted black, without any signs. The only indication it sells milkshakes is the shop window. The pace inside is incredible and the milkshakes are finger-licking good! If you get the chance, visit 127 Portobello Road and enjoy!

Those who are on the road a lot on business will no doubt be able to appreciate the short moment of quality time I found in this beautiful city. When your layover is more than five hours and you left the hotel seven hours ago, finding somewhere you can work can seem like mission impossible. But not this time. On the outskirts of the Albaicín district, I managed to find a simple and pleasant terrace next to the church of Santa Ana. Not only did the jasmine tea warm me up, I was also able to enjoy a beautiful view.

Adoro esta ciudad… Al igual que otros muchos millones de personas en el mundo. De ahí que cualquiera de las atracciones de Roma esté siempre repleta de gente. Los Museos Vaticanos, con sus kilómetros de corredores llenos de arte, son un claro ejemplo. Y qué decir de la Capilla Sixtina… Pero en esta ocasión decidí pagar algo más y disfrutar de una visita con un guía. Además de conocer todos los secretos de las principales piezas, pude ‘saltarme’ una espectacular cola y visitarla con apenas un puñado de gente más. La inversión mereció la pena.

Vuelvo a casa con la sensación de haber descubierto el lugar para las vacaciones del resto de mi vida. Menorca era uno de esos sitios que siempre me había apetecido visitar, pero que, por unas cosas o por otras, se ‘me resistía’. De todos los lugares increíbles de la isla, me quedo con Ciutadella. Las calles peatonales y llenas de vida de su centro, su catedral gótica, sus edificios señoriales… Y su puerto… ¡Ya cuento los días para mi reencuentro con todos ellos!

¿Qué hace en plena Gran Vía el ábside de una iglesia encajonado en el arco de otro edificio? Mis anfitriones madrileños fueron incapaces de responder a mi pregunta, así que decidí averiguarlo por mí mismo. Y ellos, claro, me acompañaron.

Una vez junto a la supuesta iglesia nos adentramos en su interior. Después de subir unas escaleras, por fin, accedimos al Oratorio del Caballero de Gracia, un espacio sorprendentemente luminoso y mucho más amplio de lo que puede parecer desde el exterior. Para mí, y sobre todo para mis amigos madrileños, resultó un curioso descubrimiento…

Like many other millions of people throughout the world, I love this city. As you might expect, Rome’s attractions are always packed with visitors. The Vatican Museums, with their endless art-filled corridors, are a perfect example. And that’s to say nothing of the Sistine Chapel…

However, this time round I decided to pay a little extra for a guided tour. As well as knowing all the secrets of the main pieces, my guide was able to get me to the front of a monstrous queue, and I enjoyed my visit with just a small group of people.

Money well spent.

I returned home with the feeling of having discovered somewhere to spend my holidays for the rest of my life. Menorca was one of those places I had always wanted to visit, but for one reason or another I had kept putting it off. Of all the incredible places on the island, Ciutadella was my favourite. The pedestrianised streets bustling with life at its heart, its Gothic cathedral, its stately buildings… And its port… I’m already counting the days before I return!

What is the apse of a church framed in the arch of another building doing in the middle of the Gran Vía? My Madrileño hosts were unable to answer my question so I decided to investigate for myself. Naturally, they decided to join me. When we reached the “church” we went inside. After climbing the steps, we finally came to the Oratory of Caballero de Gracia, a surprisingly well lit space, much bigger than it looks from outside. For me, and above all for my friends from Madrid, it was a curious discovery…

Bruselas tiene muchas cosas por las que merece la pena visitarla, pero yo me quedo con su especial sentido del gusto y del humor que demuestra con varias de sus estatuas. Que la más famosa de la ciudad sea un niño haciendo pis ya dice mucho…

Pero no contentos con el Manneken Pis, la ciudad también presume desde hace algunos años de niña ‘meona’ (Jeanneke Pis) y de perro haciendo lo propio (Zinneke Pis).

Aunque mi preferida es Vaartkapoenen, el policía a punto de caer de bruces contra el suelo al ser agarrado de un pie por un ladrón que asoma por una alcantarilla.

Vale que pasar la tarde en un cementerio no resulte, a priori, un plan de lo más apetecible. Pero en el caso de Novodévichy es distinto, puesto que, más que un cementerio, parece un museo escultórico al aire libre. Allí están enterrados personajes tan ilustres como Gógol, Chéjov, Raisa Gorvachov, Mayakovski o Boris Yeltsin, solo por citar algunos nombres. Como todo en Moscú, la necrópolis de Novodévichy destaca por sus increíbles dimensiones, así que conviene hacerse con un plano del mismo para ir a ‘tiro fijo’ a las sepulturas que nos interesa conocer.

Un pequeño accidente en la ducha del hotel me llevó a urgencias en plenas vacaciones. El incidente no me chafó los planes. Es más, gracias a él pude conocer uno de los edificios más impresionantes de toda Barcelona. Aunque me atendieron en el nuevo hospital, pasar por delante del antiguo de Sant Pau me dejó impresionada. Una verdadera joya del modernismo catalán.

There are many things that make Brussels worth a visit but I was taken by the distinctive taste and humour of a number of statues. The fact that the most famous is a child taking a pee says a lot… However, not content with Manneken Pis, a number of years back, the city decided to complement the statue with one of a girl taking a pee (Jeanneke Pis), and this is to say nothing of the one with the dog (Zinneke Pis). However, my favourite is Vaartkapoenen, the policeman who’s about to fall flat on his face as a thief popping up from a manhole cover grabs him by the foot.

It goes without saying that spending the afternoon in a cemetery is not everyone’s idea of a good time. But the Novodevichy Cemetery is different. It’s more like an open-air sculpture museum than a cemetery. It’s the resting place of many famous figures, including Gogol, Chekhov, Raisa Gorbacheva, Mayakovsky and Boris Yeltsin, to name just a few. Like everything in Moscow, the necropolis of Novodevichy is notable for its incredible scale, so it’s worth having a map to allow you to go directly to the tombs you’re interested in visiting.

A small accident in the shower in my hotel room meant I had to go to the hospital in the middle of my holidays. But the incident didn’t get in the way of my plans. In fact, thanks to this mishap, I was able to discover one of Barcelona’s most impressive buildings. Even though I was treated in the new building, passing in front of the old Hospital de Sant Pau was quite incredible. A true gem of Catalan modernism.
