La historia es caprichosa con Nuremberg. Algo tiene esta ciudad que atrae como un imán a megalómanos con ansias infinitas de poder. Si quieres tu lengua y tu comida... pues no. A mí no me costó. Aquí tienen la mejor cerveza del mundo, y si eres de los que no soportan los climas monótonos, en Nuremberg puedes disfrutar de cada cambio de estación”.

Graphic design is widely considered to be a major art form in the Scandinavian countries. The Swedish illustrator Habdon Sundblom was

Puede que estas latas no se comercialicen y que por muy ahumados que estén, los peces de goma no sepan igual que los del mar; pero el museo de conservas de Stavanger sigue, de algún modo, procesando y enlatando pescado. “Es un museo vivo”, repite tautológicamente Crocker, trufando todas sus frases con esta afirmación. Razón no le falta: el museo organiza competiciones de diseño de etiquetas, enseña a los visitantes a ahumar y enlatar pescado y tiene máquinas centenarias que aún funcionan y recrean con su encendido el ambiente de este edificio de principios del siglo XX. Hay muchos detalles de esta vieja fábrica que merecen ser ensalzados, pero Crocker lo tiene claro: “la pieza que más me gusta es la máquina de costura de latas”. Otro de sus mayores atractivos es el stand de las latas de sardinas, donde se exponen más de doscientas. “Es la mayor colección de latas de sardinas noruegas del mundo”, asegura Crocker. La verdad es que no parece muy difícil ya que no hay otro museo dedicado a las latas de conservas en todo el mundo.

Most of the city’s active population once worked in fishing and fish. With the discovery of petroleum reserves off the coast -the city also has its museum dedicated to the oil industry- herring and sardines fell into the background, and today there is not a single canning factory operating in the city. Not one? Well, not really… “We have rubber fish, some with heads and some without,” states the museum director, proudly. “They have been made especially for us, so that visitors can smoke them and can them.” The resulting product is most definitely not for sale; however well smoked they are, they won’t be as good as those ones
that come out the sea. However, the Canning Museum continues to process fish in its own way. “This is a living museum,” says Crocker, whose passion for the institution’s educational project is clear. We have to believe him, after all, the museum organises label design competitions and shows visitors how to process fish; its ancient machinery can still carry out its task, recreating the atmosphere of an early twentieth-century factory. There are lots of appetising details in this fascinating place, and Crocker indicates one: “the piece I like the most is the can sealing machine.” Another of his favourites is the sardine tin stand, which displays more than two hundred examples. “It is the world’s finest collection of Norwegian sardine tins,” says Crocker, although we need not be surprised by this given that this is the world’s only canning museum, making it a truly unique institution.

R La crisis también afecta a los alojamientos destinados a los jóvenes y por ese motivo, la Junta de Andalucía ha puesto en marcha una campaña que pone a disposición de los jubilados las plazas que quedan libres en los albergues juveniles a precios muy asequibles. La idea es desestacionalizar el turismo de la región, aprovechar los establecimientos que tienen plazas libres y fomentar el ocio activo entre los más mayores. El proyecto ha empezado en Almería, que ofrece como actividad estrella las visitas guiadas al Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata, pero pronto se extenderá al resto de provincias andaluzas. Se busque por donde se busque, no hay plato más canario que las papas arrugadas (o ‘arrugás’, como allí se dice) con mojo, sea este picón… o suave. Más allá de su aparente sencillez, las papas, acompañadas de las conocidas salsas rojas y verdes, saltan al encuentro de quien viaja a Tenerife una y otra vez en forma de plato (acompañando a carnes a la brasa y a pescados) o de aperitivo. Papas, que no patatas. Ya Pablo Neruda en su Oda a la papa, reivindica este sustantivo en vez del de patata. “Papa te llamas/ papa y no patata …”. Razón no le falta, pues de América llegaron las papas y de allí debería haberse importado también el nombre, de origen quechua. Pero, misterios de la etimología, papa se cruzó con batata y terminó creando patata.

As a South American, he would know; after all, that is where the plant came from, and the name from the Quechua language. For this reason, say potato scholars, the islands are home to a number of types that are morphologically and agronomically similar to certain varieties native to the south

Es tal la pasión que los malteses sienten por estos animalitos que incluso han instalado en algunos parques casetas para que puedan comer y dormir plácidamente. También es muy común encontrar platos de comida y de agua para ellos en los portales de las casas. Malta, país de playas turquesas, iglesias centenarias, pastizzis y qassatas y, por supuesto, gatos. Between Bilbao and San Sebastian, one place that’s well worth a stop is Ikuspegi Jatetxea in Irrueta, a truly privileged spot that I was taken to by some close friends. From its spectacular terrace, you can contemplate stunning views of Urkiola Nature Reserve. The exquisite dishes and wine, together with the friendly service, are a perfect combination and ideal motive to pay the place a visit. Because when you’re travelling in exceptional company, the venue should be exceptional too. That’s why this particular stop-off is a sure one to share with fellow passengers.

Caminando por el Quai d’Orsay, llamó mi atención una iglesia de tintes anglosajones que desentonaba con el estilo arquitectónico de la ciudad. Al acercarme, averigüé que se trataba de la Iglesia Americana de París, una iglesia protestante muy diferente a las católicas a las que estoy acostumbrado a ir. Dentro descubrí un lugar lleno de calma y espiritualidad. Allí, el sacristán, un encantador chico pakistaní, nos explicó la historia de la institución, creada en el siglo XVIII por estadounidenses que necesitaban un lugar para orar en inglés mientras se encontraban de negocios en la capital francesa. El edificio original se ubicó en los Campos Elíseos, trasladándose al actual emplazamiento en 1931. Walking along the Quai d’Orsay, my attention was caught by a church that seemed out of synch with the city’s architectural style. On closer inspection, I discovered that it was the American Church in Paris, a Protestant place of worship very different to the Catholic ones I’m used to. Inside, I found a place filled with calm and spirituality. There, the sacristan – a charming Pakistani guy – explained the history of the institution, created in the early nineteenth century for US visitors who needed a place to pray in English while on business in the French capital. Desde pequeño siempre fabulé con Hércules, el gigante Gerión, Breogán y el mundo celta... Se decía que desde la Torre de Hércules, el faro romano más antiguo del mundo en funcionamiento, se podía divisar, en días claros y horizonte limpio, las costas irlandesas... Paseando estos días por Punta Herminia, al lado del faro, me encontré con esta escultura hecha de piedra que me hizo evocar aquella historia. Sea cierta o no, el enclave es mágico.
¡Menudos regalitos que se hacen los gobiernos cuando quieren! El más famoso, probablemente, es el que le hizo mi país (Francia) a EE UU: la Estatua de la Libertad. Uno de mis favoritos, aunque no tan conocido, es el Templo de Debod, un templo egipcio del siglo II a.C. en medio de Madrid y que el gobierno de ese país regaló a España con motivo de la construcción de la presa de Asuán. Además de su belleza, el lugar permite tener desde allí la mejores vistas de la Casa de Campo, la catedral de la Almudena y el Palacio Real.
Cada vez que regreso a Barcelona me gusta más. Desde que bajas del avión y ves sus tiendas en el aeropuerto hasta que llegas a la ciudad y visitas sus calles, sus monumentos, centros comerciales y, especialmente, sus restaurantes, es un disfrute continuo. No hay nada como pedir unas tapas acompañadas de mi bebida favorita española: la clara, una mezcla de cerveza y gaseosa o limón. En fin, Barcelona tiene ese encanto de hacer que te enamores más de ella en cada visita.
Since I was a child, I have always dreamed up stories about Hercules, Gerión the Giant, Breogán and all things Celtic... It was said that from the Tower of Hercules – the oldest, working Roman lighthouse in the world – you could make out the Irish coast on a clear, bright day... Taking a stroll around Punta Herminia recently, just alongside the lighthouse, I came across this stone sculpture, evocative of that whole story. True or not, the location is magical.

Governments give each other cool presents when they want to, hey?! The most famous, probably, is the gift from my country (France) to the USA: the Statue of Liberty. One of my favourites, though not so well known, is the Debod Temple, a 2nd-century BC Egyptian temple sent to Spain by Egypt when the Aswan dam was built. As well as its beauty, the location offers the best views of the Casa de Campo, Almudena Cathedral and Royal Palace.
Every time I go back to Barcelona I like it even more. From the moment you get off the plane and see the airport stores until you arrive in the city and visit its streets, monuments, shopping centres and especially its restaurants, it’s just non-stop enjoyment. There’s nothing better than ordering tapas along with my favourite Spanish drink: clara, a mixture of beer with lemonade or soda water. In short, Barcelona has a kind of charm that makes you fall further in love with the city with every visit.
