Si arranca o no arranca la primavera, no es un tema de conversación en los ascensores de esta isla bendecida al alimón por Helios y Eolo. Los caprichos de la naturaleza o la mitología —quién sabe— colocaron a Gran Canaria en un lugar privilegiado, mecida por el Atlántico y salpicada de una diversidad única que la convierten en un auténtico continente en miniatura. No hay isla que presente un contraste de paisajes tan pronunciado, que combine con sencillez zonas áridas, acantilados y montañas de vegetación tropical con playas de arena blanca y negra y valles fértiles. Sus habitantes, obviamente, están encantados con el lugar en el que les ha tocado vivir. Y pese al turismo y las transformaciones que llegaron de regalo, los grancanarios aún mantienen a buen recaudo su cofre de tradiciones y artesanía centenaria, mimándolo y puliéndolo con orgullo. El orgullo del que se siente un afortunado.
There is little discussion about whether spring is on the way during coffee breaks on this island, jointly blessed by Helios and Eos. The caprices of nature, or mythology -who knows-, have given Gran Canaria a privileged place, bathed by the Atlantic and granted a unique diversity that makes it a miniature continent. There is perhaps no other small island that presents such a startling contrast of landscapes, with plain, arid areas; sea cliffs; mountains of sub-tropical vegetation; beaches of white sand, others of black sand; and fertile agricultural valleys. It is hardly surprising, then, that its inhabitants love the place. And despite the tourism and the transformations that have arrived in recent decades, the Gran Canarians still hoard their traditions and their ancient craftsmanship, caring for them as they deserve. There is a pride here, and a sense of being lucky.

Se gana la vida entre fogones en un hotel de Meloneras, en el extremo sur de la isla. Pero sus aficiones son casi infinitas y todas empapadas de tradición, desde la cetrería hasta la agricultura. Quizás sea porque nació en el interior, en Artenera. El caso es que más allá del turismo, Gran Canaria conserva con ahínco las huellas de su pasado. “Las costumbres que vienen de atrás se intentan mantener. Esta isla es muy tradicional y se impulsan los oficios artesanales como el trabajo de mimbre, la elaboración de quesos, la fabricación de zurrones de los pastores, la alfarería, los calados…”. Chano confiesa que se siente muy conectado con las raíces de esta tierra y en especial con un elemento esencial para cualquier canario: el mar. “Si alzas la vista y no ves el mar, te encuentras perdido. Aquí se ve desde cualquier lugar en el que te halles. Estés en la cumbre o abajo, cuando te giras, lo ves; ahí está la referencia. Lo es todo”.

Y es que, aunque las variaciones meteorológicas en la isla son considerables, Edelmira es de Sardina del Sur o, lo que es lo mismo, 25 grados constantes todo el año. Sin viento. “En 30 km de costa puede variar la temperatura cinco grados tranquilamente. Pero en la parte sur se dice que está la mejor temperatura del mundo”. Aunque hoy trabaja en el turismo, de joven se dedicó a la agricultura, como tantos otros de su generación. “Recuerdo la época de los tomateros como algo fantástico. Entonces la gente no vivía con tanta presión. No necesitábamos cuatro pares de zapatos. Nos conformábamos con mucho menos”. Habla con orgullo de la cocina tradicional que le enseñó su madre y de platos antológicos como los potajes, la carne en salsa de cabra y el mojito canario. Luego vuelve a reír. Con razón.

Por eso, tres años después, en 1932, Fira Internacional de Barcelona, consorcio formado por el Ayuntamiento de la ciudad, la Generalitat de Catalunya y la Cambra de Comerç, se convertiría en la institución que a partir de entonces
iba a encargarse de la organización de salones y congresos especializados en diversos sectores económicos. Pero también, de eventos de carácter corporativo, social y cultural. Desde entonces, la actividad ferial de Barcelona no ha perdido ripio. En sus 125 años de historia, Fira ha logrado situarse como uno de los principales referentes internacionales como plataforma para la promoción comercial, la proyección internacional de las empresas o el networking. Since then, Barcelona’s exhibition activity has only increased. It is also an important source of income, in the region of 2,500 million Euros, for the city and its surroundings. In order to keep up its good work Fira is looking to the future; an outstanding example of this is the 2007 opening of its Gran Vía exhibition site designed by the Japanese architect Toyo Ito, which joins the Montjuïc centre. It is also working to enlarge its exhibition rooms, create new shows related to emerging industries, ensure a high level of service and attract major international events; with the intention of heading in the same direction in another 125 years.

La imagen del jardín no es nueva. Hace casi un siglo, el doctor James Empringham escribió Jardinería intestinal para lo prolongación de la juventud, donde, a partir de su propia experiencia de enfermo, recomendaba una serie de métodos naturales para mantener el intestino, y la salud en general, en buen estado. El enfoque tuvo éxito y el libro aún se sigue reeditando. En realidad, según el enciclopédico culinario Harold McGee, Empringham seguía la estela de los estudios iniciados en el siglo

In fact it was a Bulgarian, Stamen Grigorov, who first identified this benign bacterium, which was named lactobacillus bulgaricus.

Tras una semana de bastante trabajo en Londres, aterricé en Barcelona. Allí, una amiga me invitó a unos baños árabes llamados Aires de Barcelona. Fue increíble. Rompí de golpe con mi estrés y creo que gracias a esto pude disfrutar más intensamente de la ciudad. Si te decides a experimentarlo, mi recomendación es que pruebes el baño de sal (yo estuve flotando 20 minutos…), luego el de agua templada, el agua caliente, la fría, mil chorros, hammam, sala de relajación y, por último, un masaje de 45 minutos en una jaima espectacular. ¡Quiero uno en Londres ya!
Hace un tiempo descubrí los montes del Matese, una zona al sur de Italia de la que me enamoré perdidamente. Tanto como para volver tres veces desde Canadá en poco más de dos años… El lugar en cuestión se encuentra en la región de Campania, a una hora en coche de Nápoles, más o menos, y forma parte de los Apeninos. Los picos más altos alcanzan cerca de los 2.000 metros de altura y justo a sus pies, pero a una altura aún elevada, existe el pintoresco valle donde se encuentra el lago Matese, así como otros valles artificiales y encantadores pueblos.
After a week’s hard work in London, I landed in Barcelona. There, a friend invited me to some Arab Baths called Aires de Barcelona. It was incredible; I felt my stress melting away and I think, thanks to that experience, I enjoyed my week in the city much more. If you want to try it, my recommendation is that you try the salt bath (I floated there for 20 minutes) and then the warm water, the hot water, the cold bath, the jets, the hammam, the relaxation room and, lastly a 45-minute massage in a spectacular Arab tent. I want some in London now!
Some time ago I discovered the mountains of Matese, a part of the south of Italy that I have fallen hopelessly in love with. So much so that I went back from Canada three times in just over two years… This place is in the Campania region, an hour by car from Naples, and forms part of the Apennine chain. The highest peaks are nearly 2,000 metres high and at their feet but still quite high up, there is a picturesque valley with a lake (Lago Matese), other artificial lakes and some lovely little towns.

En mi último viaje a Bilbao estuve en un lugar que no aparece en las guías turísticas, pero que debería ser declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. Se trata del Manantial de agua que brota en Alzola (Guipúzkoa). Sus características lo hacen único ya que el agua de lluvia es recogida en el interior de la tierra y transportada a través de las profundidades hasta que brota después de 20 años de viaje. Una enorme roca intacta de decenas de kilómetros hace de filtro natural para que el agua adquiera una composición llena de minerales y que no necesite ser tratada químicamente para ser bebida.
En pleno corazón de Cabo de Gata nos encontramos con una pequeña aldea de pescadores llamada Isleta del Moro. Es el mejor sitio para conocer cómo se lleva el pescado de las barcas a los bares del pueblecito. Junto a él hay una isleta donde se practica el buceo, ya que la zona es reserva de la biosfera marítima. Y en el lugar más alto de la aldea hay un mirador desde donde poder contemplar diferentes volcanes de alrededor, además de toda la bahía. Tampoco faltan en Isleta del Moro numerosas playas y calas en sus alrededores, donde uno puede perderse en esta joya del Mediterráneo.
Fue durante el tercer viaje que realicé a Roma cuando descubrí una nueva y maravillosa panorámica de la ciudad. Fue al subir a la Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi. Desde allí disfruté por primera vez de unas fascinantes vistas de toda Roma y de la cúpula de la Basílica de San Pietro. Está claro que nunca llegas a conocer ninguna ciudad del todo y que en cada visita descubres nuevas experiencias y te sorprendes con un rincón desconocido hasta el momento. Pero en el caso concreto de la Ciudad Eterna, cada descubrimiento es un verdadero regalo para los sentidos.
On my last trip to Bilbao I visited a place that doesn’t appear in the tourist guides, even though it is UNESCO World Heritage. This is the Alzola water source in Gipuzkoa. What makes it unique is that the rainwater falls, collects underground, and by the time it springs it has spent 20 years inside the earth. An enormous porous rock, dozens of square kilometres in size, acts as a natural filter, meaning this water is full of minerals and doesn’t need to be treated before drinking.
On the Cabo de Gata peninsula we found a small fishing village called Isleta del Moro. It is a good place to see the way they take fish from the boats to the local bars. Offshore there is a little island where you can go diving; a good choice since this is a maritime biosphere reserve. At the top of the town there is a viewpoint where you can see some extinct volcanoes round about, as well as views of the bay. There are also lots of beaches and coves nearby. This really is a Mediterranean gem.

During my third trip to Rome I discovered a wonderful new view of the city when I climbed up to the Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi. There is a great panorama of the city that I had never seen, including a clear view of the dome of St Peter’s. Obviously you never know everything about a city, and so you always have new experiences on each visit, discovering surprising new places. But in the case of the Eternal City, these little discoveries bring spectacular new possibilities.

La primera visita a Menorca es un descubrimiento sensacional. Mejor ir sin búsquedas previas en internet y la sorpresa será mayor. Paisajes ordenados, verdes, violetas, amarillos; arquitectura de piedra en seco y, cómo no, los poblados talaiòtics, ¡espacios artísticos de primera! Entre los descubrimientos que me han marcado: Líthica- Las Canteres de s’Hostal. Punta Nati, el paraíso de la piedra seca; una copa de cava Recaredo en el bistrot Sol 32 de es Mercadal; una cosecha de espárragos en el poblado talaiòtic de Torre Rota; el paisaje agreste del Faro de Favàritx…
Teniendo en cuenta lo que tuvo que sufrir la ciudad a principios del XX, al perder el 90% de sus edificios y hasta el 95% de su población, resulta increíble que en menos de un siglo Varsovia se haya podido recuperar de esa forma. No solo en lo que se refiere a su infraestructura, sino también anímicamente porque una de las cosas que más me sorprendió fue el carácter abierto de sus habitantes. Puede sonar a tópico pero un recorrido por el cementerio judío, por las calles que en su día formaron parte del gueto o por los canales que transitaban por debajo de la zona aria supone un recomendable paseo por la historia.
Dicen que Gorodetsky se volvió loco tras el suicidio de su hija. A ella, sigue contando la leyenda, le dedicó su famosa Casa con Quimeras. Los que prefieran rehuir de la tristeza escojan aquella otra historia que relaciona el origen del edificio con la apuesta que el propio arquitecto realizó con otros colegas a los que aseguró que podría levantarlo en una zona muy inclinada tan cercana a un pantano. Apuesta que, obviamente, ganó. Y como no hay dos sin tres, la tercera leyenda sobre la Casa Quimera habla de una maldición: la que el propio Gorodetsky lanzó contra todos aquellos que residieran en un futuro en el inmueble, tras ser forzado a abandonarlo al no poder hacer frente a las deudas contraídas…
A first visit to Menorca, it’s a sensational discovery. It´s best to go without internet research so your surprise will be bigger. Nice landscape with terraced gardens, all shades of green, violet, yellow! An artistic, first class landscape! I was surprised by: Líthica-las Canteres de s’Hostal; Punta Nati, a dry stone paradise; a Recaredo cava at bistro Sol 32 in es Mercadal; a bouquet of wild asparagus gathered at “talaiòtic” village Torre Rota; and the lunar landscape of Favàritx Lighthouse.

Bearing in mind what the city suffered during the war, losing 90% of its buildings and 95% of its population, it is incredible that in less than a century Warsaw has been able to recover in this way. I am not only talking about its infrastructure but also the atmosphere, because one of the things that surprised me most was the openness of the people here. Maybe it’s a bit of a cliché, but a visit to the Jewish cemetery, the old ghetto area, and the canals that run under the streets are all good ways of seeing a bit of Warsaw’s history. It is said that if we understand the past we can avoid the same mistakes in the future, so just in case…

They say that the architect Gorodetsky went mad after his daughter committed suicide. He is supposed to have dedicated his famous House of the Chimaeras to her. Those looking for happier endings usually pick another tale about the building’s origin that says it was the result of the architect’s bet with his colleagues who said that it wasn’t possible to construct a major building on steep ground near a water source. Obviously Gorodetsky won. Since these things tend to come in threes, here is another, about a curse: Gorodetsky is supposed to have wished the evil eye on all those living in the property, since he was forced to leave his home here because of his debts… Irene Ojeda Barcelona - Kiev.
