A la hora de levantar un edificio de cualquier tipo, su primer requisito es el de la funcionalidad, pero ya hace tiempo que otras cuestiones, como el diseño y la innovación, llegaron para quedarse. Por eso, en el salón BBB Construmat que se celebrará en el recinto de Gran Vía de Fira de Barcelona del 19 al 23 de mayo de 2015 se verán prodigios, como casas construidas con impresoras 3D o con robots, y se tocarán temas como la domótica o el BIM (modelado de información de construcción).

En la feria tendrán también especial protagonismo, además de la creatividad, los proyectos relacionados con rehabilitación y sostenibilidad.

Esto tiene sentido. La preocupación por el medio ambiente y el uso responsable de recursos debe empezar por los productos de vida más larga de cuantos construye el hombre. Este apartado contará con acciones de sensibilización dirigidas tanto a profesionales como al público general y tratará el tema de la eficiencia energética.

Bajo el título de Living Concept, se hablará también en el BBB Construmat de diseño de interiores en el ámbito doméstico, el laboral y el retail.

Según un estudio de la empresa alemana SAP, en 2016 las pantallas de los coches conectados serán las cuartas más utilizadas (después de las Smart TVs, los ordenadores y los móviles). Es más: según Accenture, el 66% de los compradores dan más importancia a la tecnología del vehículo que a su rendimiento. Por todo esto, la innovación tecnológica no podía faltar en la feria de coches por excelencia. El Salón Internacional del Automóvil de Barcelona (SIAB) celebra su 38ª edición, y en su sección Connected Car tratará a fondo el tema de las nuevas tecnologías de conectividad en vehículos.

En la sección Sketch Car Design, el público podrá fantasear con la apariencia de su coche soñado. La industria acepta, así, que el diseño se lleva otra porción importante de la tarta de la decisión de compra. El cuarto eje temático del salón, titulado Urban Mobility, se focalizará en la innovación en la movilidad de las ciudades, un tema que influye en el ocio y en la forma de organización de las actividades cotidianas de los urbanitas.

But this year the fair will also be focused in the future of the motor industry. What is more, according to Accenture, 66% of buyers prioritise a vehicle’s technology over its performance. For these reasons, technological innovation is a must at one of the world’s great motor shows. This is to be the 38th Barcelona Motor Show, and its Connected Car section will take an in-depth look at the new technologies and connecting vehicles.

The Sketch Car Design section will allow the public to imagine the appearance of their dream car. This is the industry’s admission that design plays a very important part when it comes to making a purchasing decision. Another themed section at the fair, entitled Urban Mobility, will focus on innovation in terms of mobility in cities; this is a matter that strongly influences leisure and the ways in which the daily activities of city-dwellers are organised.

Esta estudiante de Literatura Inglesa en la Universidad Americana de Beirut tiene una cosa clara: “Una vez te enamoras de esta ciudad, puedes ir a cualquier parte del mundo… pero siempre regresas”.

Sarah and her friends run a stand at the Saturday downtown farmer’s market. After spending her first 12 years in New York, Sarah grew up in Beirut. A student of English Literature at the American University Beirut she is sure of one thing: “Once you fall in love with the city, you can go anywhere in the world, but you will always come back.”

“Siempre tienes el mar a dos pasos y en media hora estás en las montañas”. Una de sus tres hijas vive en Canadá. Cuando fue a visitarla le sorprendió que la gente no se saludara en el ascensor. “Eso nunca pasaría aquí. Nos encanta charlar y saludar a todo el mundo, hasta cuando no nos conocemos”.

De la Casa recounts that the puppetry tradition in the Basque Country is similar to that of regular theatre. “The oldest companies have been around no longer than 40 years and all of them started out as amateurs, com-

bining their day jobs with activities for kids at the weekends,” she explains. “But now there are established, professional companies that our centre has helped to grow and there’s no local party in the whole of Euskal Herria, be it in a village or a town, that doesn’t include an activity with puppets.” This means that different puppet theatre schedules are in place, and the companies can make a living.

As in every other sector, however, the crisis has hit hard. “Large companies have disappeared in all the regions and, with the increase in VAT, it’s hard to meet the payments. Many colleagues have had to reduce their prices.”

De la Casa describes an environment in which “some think it’s better to stay at home, given that what they get paid doesn’t even cover their costs.” The centre has commissioned a report on the situation, but it won’t be ready until July. Meanwhile, she’ll keep on pulling the strings, spreading the word, as far as she can, that there’s pride in being a puppeteer.

Siempre resulta sorprendente encontrar pequeñas islas en mitad del mar que encierran una cocina atractiva. Diríase que para que se desarrolle una gastronomía de cierta entidad parece necesario contar con una gran extensión de tierra que aporte productos, comensales, mercados y técnicas. Y sin embargo, no siempre es así; Ibiza es un ejemplo.

En sus menos de 600 kilómetros cuadrados han nacido productos más conocidos, como su sal, y menos, como sus vinos de la Tierra de Ibiza, y recetas originales como las de sus típicos pasteles de queso o flaós. Pero, además, hay un buen número de platos que los restaurantes ibicencos pueden ofrecer como

A touch of the Enlightenment in Ibiza’s cuisine It’s always surprising to find tiny islands in the middle of the sea that have developed attractive cuisine. For gastronomy of a certain quality to evolve, it is supposed that a location requires a great expanse of land to provide produce, consumers, markets and techniques. This is not always the case, however; Ibiza is an example.

Under 600km squared have yielded the island’s better-known products such as salt, its lesser-known gems like Tierra de Ibiza wines, and original recipes including traditional cheesecakes or flaós. What’s more, there’s a healthy number of local dishes for restaurants to offer, covering the whole range of ingredients: hearty meat-based recipes such as sofrit pages; fish dishes, like bullit de peix; and others packed with spring vegetables, such as cuinat.

There’s another typical dish – one of life’s strange coincidences – that’s fruit of the Enlightenment’s lukewarm attempts to take root in Spain: borrida de ratjada or Ibiza-style skate. Because a key ingredient in this recipe is chopped almonds, and these are grown on the island thanks to one enlightened character.

La escapada parisina al final acabó abarcando bastante más que la capital francesa: Normandía, valle del Loira, Bretaña… De esta última región me fascinó la multitud de pintorescos paisajes que encontrabas en todos sus rincones. Y entre los más singulares, me quedo con una espléndida piscina llena de agua de mar que encontramos en la comuna de Dinard. ¡Espectacular!

Después de visitar la bodega Cálem y saborear un par de vinos de Oporto, me senté a comer en un restaurante en esa misma zona, Vilanova de Gaia. Mientras degustaba unas deliciosas sardinas a la brasa, acompañadas de un buen ‘vinho verde’, contemplaba el barrio de la Ribeira de Oporto con sus casas de colores que parecen amontonarse para ver su reflejo en el Duero. Oporto es una ciudad pintoresca, acogedora y afable. Antes de partir, me senté a orillas del río y quedé absorta contemplando el balanceo de las barcas en sus aguas. Sonreí, bajo un agradable sol de marzo, contenta de haber conocido esta encantadora ciudad al norte de Portugal.

That getaway to Paris ended up taking in much more than the French capital: Normandy, the Loire Valley, Brittany… This latter region was full of fascinating, picturesque landscapes. And among the most unique I’d choose a splendid pool full of sea water that we found at the Dinard commune. Spectacular!

After visiting the Cálem winery and sampling several Port wines, I sat down in a restaurant in nearby Vilanova de Gaia.

While I was eating some delicious roast sardines and drinking a good “vinho verde” I looked over the Ribeira de Oporto neighbourhood, with its colourful houses that almost seem to lean out to see their reflection in the Duero. Oporto is a picturesque city, friendly and welcoming. Before leaving it, I sat on the banks of the river, absorbed by the boats bobbing on the water. I smiled in the pleasant March sun, happy to have gotten to know this enchanting city in the north of Portugal.

He visitado varias veces Portugal y me fascina, pero en este viaje he descubierto una ciudad encantadora: Nazaré. Su ambiente te traslada a los años de principios del siglo XX. Tiene un puerto pesquero y una lonja de toda la vida, donde los hombres traen el pescado y la mujeres negocian los precios. Allí comí un arroz con marisco increíble. También subí a un tren cremallera diseñado por Eiffel que, una vez alcanzada la cima, te permite disfrutar de unas vistas muy curiosas: por un lado, una playa con unas olas muy altas; y por otro, una playa serena, tranquila, sin oleaje. Una ciudad para volver.

A medio camino entre Vigo y Santiago, y en mitad de las Rías Bajas, se encuentra Pontevedra. Una pequeña y acogedora ciudad con un muy cuidado centro histórico repleto de calles con soportales, plazas con encanto y una curiosa y muy bonita iglesia circular, la Peregrina. Pero lo que más me atrajo de todo fue su mercado, muy agradable, con toda su planta baja dedicada a productos frescos del mar. Daban ganas de parar en cada puesto y comprar el género que ofrecían.

Conducir en Berlín por primera vez con Carola (amiga venezolana como yo), que no lleva ni un año viviendo en la ciudad, es superemocionante. Es como estar en una pista de ‘carritos chocones’ con la diferencia de que no solo te encuentras con vehículos en distintas direcciones, sino que también compartes carril con bicicletas, personas y demás. La sensación de que la adrenalina se dispara es constante, sobre todo cuando te encuentras con monumentos como el de la foto. Giramos y giramos en torno a él hasta que decidimos en qué dirección seguir. Mientras Carola conducía, yo aproveché para sacar la foto.

I’ve visited Portugal several times and love it, but on this trip I discovered a charming city: Nazaré. It’s something out of the early 20th century. There’s a fishing port and a traditional seafood market, where the men bring the produce and the women bargain over the prices. It was there that I ate an incredible shellfish and rice dish. I also travelled on a cog railway designed by Eiffel, and once you get to the top there are some curious views: on one side there’s a beach with some very high waves and on the other a beach with no waves at all. It’s a city to come back to.

Pontevedra is halfway between Vigo and Santiago in the middle of the Rías Bajas part of Galicia. It’s a small, friendly city with an impeccable historic part full of archways, charming squares and a curious and very pretty circular church, called La Peregrina. But what most attracted me was the lovely market, with a lower level dedicated to fresh seafood: I wanted to stop at each stall and buy something.

Driving in Berlin for the first time with my friend Carola –she’s from Venezuela, like me, and has been there for less than a year– I found the city really exciting. It’s like being in a bumper car course, with the difference that you not only find vehicles going in different directions but you also share your lane with bikes, people and everything else. It’s a constant adrenaline rush, especially when you come across monuments like the one in the photo. We went around it again and again before deciding which direction to take. While Carola drove, I took the picture.

Estaba caminando por el Barrio Gótico cuando encontré una pequeña y maravillosa tienda donde se vendían viejas bicicletas además de todo tipo de accesorios.

A través del escaparate pude ver bicis de todo tipo, algunas en pleno proceso de reparación. ¡Era el sitio soñado para cualquier amante de las bicicletas de carreras antiguas! La tienda estaba cerrada, pero el propietario me vio mirando a través de la vidriera por lo que salió a preguntarme si quería entrar. Su nombre es Erik, y es alemán. Me contó que la tienda llevaba abierta solo tres días… El lugar se llama Vintage Velo y se encuentra en la Baixada del Caçador.

Mi mala memoria me impide que recuerde el nombre de la calle, pero estaba a solo dos minutos de la Fontana di Trevi. La casa de mi amiga Andrea se encuentra en un edificio de esos tan antiguos que al abrir la puerta del portal te azota el aroma a madera vieja que ya solo desprenden algunas iglesias. Lo mejor de la casa, sin duda, su pequeño balcón. Los turistas subiendo y bajando la calle, los tenderos adecentando sus tiendas, los restauradores colocando los manteles de las mesas de sus terrazas…

Un privilegiado balcón desde el que observar la ajetreada cotidianeidad romana...

Tengo muchos amigos que viven en Madrid y todos están de acuerdo en eso de que, en cuanto caen cuatro gotas, el tráfico en la capital se vuelve imposible. Por suerte, yo no suelo moverme en taxi cuando voy a la ciudad. Aprovecho para desplazarme andando o, como mucho, utilizar el transporte público. De ahí que para mí la lluvia no sea una maldición. Todo lo contrario. Me encanta pasear por el centro de Madrid bajo el paraguas y parar en algún café con grandes cristaleras para contemplar lo que ocurre fuera…

While walking in the Gothic Quarter, I came across a tiny, wonderful shop displaying old bicycles, bicycle parts and accessories in various states of repair. It was the dream space for anyone who loves old racing bikes! The shop was closed, but as I was peering through the windows, the owner came outside to ask if I would like to visit. His name is Erik, he is from Germany, and he said it was only the third day his new shop was open! The place is called Vintage Velo and it is on Baixada del Caçador, Barcelona.

I’ve got a bad memory and can’t remember the name of the street, but it was just a few minutes from the Fontana di Trevi.

My friend Andrea’s house is in one of those very old buildings where, when you open the big door, you get that aroma of old wood that’s only found in some churches.

The best thing about the house is it’s small balcony. The tourists walking up and down the street, the shopkeepers straightening up their shops, the restaurant owners laying their tables in the street… It’s a special balcony from which to observe Rome’s daily hustle and bustle…

I have lots of friends who live in Madrid and they all agree that when the first few raindrops fall, traffic in the capital becomes impossible. Luckily, I usually don’t move around by car when I’m in the city: I walk or sometimes use public transport.

That’s why, for me, rain is no problem. I love to walk around the centre of the city under my umbrella or stop at some café with big windows to watch what’s going on outside…
