Mi último viaje a Viena fue muy húmedo (solo recordarlo me da reuma). Era justamente octubre, un mes de vendimias y fiestas del vino. Al llegar me refugié en un Heuriger (típica taberna en la que solo sirven vinos de cosecha propia) y pedí un Sturm, un vino turbio poco fermentado. Mientras degustaba aquel dulce mosto con nombre de estornudo, me llamó la atención un hombre sentado al fondo. Parecía asustado y me acerqué. Aún no domino el alemán, así que tuve que hacer gala de mi impecable inglés. Le pregunté si se encontraba bien. Me dijo que de momento sí, pero que si llovía cinco días seguidos, le sucedería algo terrible. “¿El qué?”, le pregunté. “Es mejor que no lo sepa”. Claro, me obsesioné inmediatamente. Así que me ofrecí a pasar los siguientes días con él. El misterioso hombre me llevó de paseo por la Viena Imperial. Octubre es el mes ideal para visitar sus palacios (hay más de 150) ya que te ahorras las colas y apretujones poco higiénicos de los miles de turistas veraniegos. Fuimos al Schloss Schönbrunn Palace, cumbre del barroco austríaco, y al Palacio Belvedere, hogar del famoso cuadro El beso de Gustav Klimt. Seguía lloviendo y su inquietud crecía. Al día siguiente fuimos a la Karlsplatz, uno de los puntos más visitados y mejor conectados de la ciudad. Allí se encuentra el Museo de la Secession, con temas del modernismo vienés. El tiempo empeoraba y su cara también. Nos entró el hambre y fuimos hasta el Naschmarkt, un mercado al aire libre con una oferta espectacular. Justo al lado está repleto de pequeños restaurantes donde se come de maravilla. Lo suyo es pedir una jarra de limonada con hojas de hierbabuena mientras esperas tu plato. Mi curiosidad por saber qué problema tenía aquel hombre con la lluvia no podía esperar. Disimuladamente, le derramé la jarra entera de limonada en la cabeza. “Uy, qué torpe soy, perdona”. Pero nada. Ninguna reacción extraña. Viena también es la ciudad de la música. Por eso fuimos al Wien Modern, festival dedicado a la música contemporánea (del 24 de octubre hasta el 15 de noviembre). No paraba de llover y ya iban cuatro días seguidos. El misterioso hombre se empezó a mostrar muy alterado. Sugerí ir a la Viennale, el festival de cine independiente más importante de Austria (del 24 octubre al 6 de noviembre). De camino, pasamos al lado de una enorme fuente. Esta es la mía, me dije. Simulé tropezar y le empujé dentro de la fuente. A ver si ahora pasa algo, pensé. Nada. Ni una convulsión, ni un espasmo, ni un triste Gremlin saliendo de su espalda. Llegó el quinto día de lluvia y el hombre empezó a gritar desesperado. Le agarré por la solapa: “¡Confiesa, eres un monstruo, ¿verdad?!” “¡Qué monstruo ni qué leches!”, me dijo en furioso alemán. “Que acabo de lavar el coche y si llueve cinco días no te devuelven el dinero”. Menudo chasco. Y yo que creía que se iba a convertir en gárgola.
My last trip to Vienna was a wet one (just thinking about it makes me feel damp). It was October, the month of the grape harvest and wine festivals. When I got there I took shelter in a heuriger (a traditional tavern where they only sell local wines) and ordered a Sturm, a young, cloudy wine. While I enjoyed my glass of wine with its name like a sneeze, I noticed a man sitting on his own. He looked worried so I went over to him. Although my German is not up to much, that wasn’t a problem since it gave me a chance to show off my near-perfect English. I asked him if he was ok. He said, “for now, yes” but that if it rained for the next five days, something terrible would happen. “What?” I asked. His reply was enigmatic: “It’s better that you don’t know.” Of course, I was immediately curious, even obsessed. So I offered to spend the next few days with him. The mysterious man showed me around Imperial Vienna. October is a good month to visit the palaces (there are more than 150) since you avoid those queues and unhygienic crowds of summer tourists. We went to the Schloss Schönbrunn Palace, a gem of Austrian Baroque, and the Belvedere Palace, home to the famous painting The Kiss by Gustav Klimt. It was still raining and my companion looked more and more worried. The next day we went to the Karlsplatz, a busy hub in the city centre and the site of the art nouveau Secession Museum. The weather was getting worse and the man’s face with it. We were hungry and we went to the Naschmarkt, an open-air market with an amazing range of stalls. There are lots of great little restaurants in the area. Here they have the habit of ordering a jug of lemonade with mint leaves while waiting for the food to arrive. My desire to know what problem my new friend had with the rain could not wait. I brilliantly and covertly poured the entire jug of lemonade over his head. “Oh, how clumsy of me, I am sorry!” But nothing. No unexpected reaction. Vienna is also a musical city. So we visited the Wien Modern festival of contemporary music (from the 24th of October to the 15th of November). It kept on raining and we were on our fourth day. Cientos de ruinas romanas y edificios clásicos, barrocos y demás se combinan con magníficos ejemplos de arquitectura contemporánea del nivel del Foro Itálico, el barrio del E.U.R. o la iglesia de Dios Padre Misericordioso; también con los futuros proyectos, como La Nube, un nuevo centro de congresos obra de Massimiliano Fuksas, y la necesitada tercera línea de metro, ambos postergados. Pero no solo con la arquitectura ocurre esto. Una mañana de sábado en el bar Zara del residencial quartiere de Laurentina, el presente, el pasado y futuro de la población de Roma se encuentran juntos pero no revueltos. O, como dice el lema no oficial de la capital de Italia, tutto a posto e niente in ordine.

As the (unofficial) motto of the city goes: tutto a posto e niente in ordine (‘everything in place, nothing in order’).

Los domingos suele acudir al Campo de' Fiori, una plaza cercana al Coliseo donde queda con sus amigos antes de ir a relajarse a la piazzale Clolio y a la de Flaminio. Justo en el séptimo día de la semana tiene uno de sus recuerdos más emocionantes: una de esas extrañas ocasiones en las que los tifosi del Lazio y la Roma, los dos equipos de la ciudad, marcharon juntos hacia el estadio.

Nacida en el hoy turístico Trastevere en 1930 —“soy 'trasteverina'”—, vivió luego en el barrio obrero de la Garbatella —“recuerdo que me escapaba de la escuela para ir a dar vueltas por ahí”— y ahora mora en Laurentina. Experta en cocina romana —”me llamaban la reina de los carciofi [alcahofas]”—, tras asegurar haber hecho “todos los platos romanos” pasa a enumerarlos: “coda alla vaccinara [rabo de vaca], pajarta [tripas de un lechazo], coratella [corazón]...”. Uno de los parroquianos apunta que estos platos típicos son todos con la parte pobre de los animales y recomienda acudir al barrio de Testaccio para probarlos.

Ahí nació el mito de María Pita, la gran heroína de la ciudad, cuya estatua preside la plaza del Ayuntamiento a la que también da nombre. María Mayor Fernández de Cámara Pita cogió la espada de su marido, un alférez muerto en la batalla, y lideró una defensa popular que consiguió resistir el asedio de un ejército de 12.000 hombres. El jardín de San Carlos muestra esta relación ambivalente. La gran poetisa gallega, Rosalía de Castro, paseaba en 1871 por los jardines de San Carlos cuando se quedó prendada del mausoleo dedicado al general británico Sir John Moore. Rosalía, que por aquel tiempo residía en A Coruña, le dedicó el poema (escrito en gallego) En la tumba del general inglés Sir John Moore muerto en la Batalla de Elviña el 16 de enero de 1809. En estos versos profesaba su admiración por un hombre que murió —por una bala de cañón— luchando lejos de casa. Moore tenía 39 años y estaba al mando de las tropas inglesas en España que luchaban contra los soldados de Napoleón. Después de su muerte, cuando los franceses tomaron la ciudad, el Mariscal Soult ordenó que se construyera una tumba para enterrar los restos de su digno rival. A Rosalía le preocupaba que las cenizas de Moore no encontraran descanso en una tierra extraña. One version of the story says that Lady Hester, distraught after Moore’s death, went into self-exile in the East and until her death she treasured a bloody glove worn by the general at the Battle of Elviña. Some have become heroes to the city, while others remain villains, like Sir Francis Drake, the vice-admiral who led the invasion of A Coruña in 1589. This was the beginning of the myth of María Pita, whose statue stands in one of the city’s main squares. R Para combatir el éxito incontestable que ha adquirido este año el cronut a ambos lados del Atlántico, Bea Bo, propietaria de las pastelerías londinenses Bea’s of Bloomsbury, ha creado el townie, una mezcla de brownie y tartaleta que une lo mejor de ambos postres. Lo ha hecho a petición de un diario de la capital ya que, en los últimos años, Bea se ha especializado en crear postres híbridos. Algunas de sus aportaciones a la pastelería híbrida fueron el duffin, mitad donut y mitad muffin, o el muffle, una mezcla muy golosa entre un muffin y un suculento gofre. Y algo así deben haber pensado en Nápoles, donde el consistorio ha puesto a disposición de sus empleados las primeras 50 bicicletas eléctricas con las que pretende que los trabajadores públicos vayan a trabajar. El objetivo es evitar el uso del coche, aligerar el tráfico del centro de la ciudad y, por supuesto, conseguir que los funcionarios también colaboren en el objetivo de tener una ciudad menos contaminada y más verde.

En el barrio milanés de Navigli hay dos calles, Via Cardinale Ascanio Sforza y Ripa di Porta Ticinese, que bordean dos ríos que desembocan en la Dársena. En verano cierran el paso a vehículos y al atardecer ambas calles se llenan de gente paseando, tomando una copa, cenando, escuchando el sonido de instrumentos de músicos callejeros y viendo espectáculos de artistas que esperan recibir algunas monedas por su obra. En la calle Ripa di Porta Ticinese podemos ver una hermosa bicicleta atada al lado del río desde hace tanto tiempo que le han crecido flores en sus entrañas. ¿Qué interesante historia habrá hecho que su dueño o dueña no haya venido aún a desencadenarla?
Todo el mundo busca el encanto de Sevilla en sus paseos en coches de caballo, las tapitas típicas en los bares o en los bellísimos azulejos de la Plaza de España, obra de artesanos ceramistas de Triana. Pero muy pocos visitantes de Sevilla experimentan uno de los más maravillosos paseos que se puede dar en barco por Europa: recorrer hasta Sanlúcar de Barrameda, en Cádiz, todo el paseo fluvial que comporta el ‘Río Grande’, al que los árabes bautizaron como Guadalquivir. Muchos cruceros ofrecen la posibilidad de recorrerlo tomando un maravilloso pescaíto frito, un manjar que compone uno de los múltiples encantos de Andalucía.
In the Milanese neighbourhood of Navigli there are two streets, Via Cardinale Ascanio Sforza and Ripa di Porta Ticinese, which follow two rivers that flow into the Darsena. In summer they are closed to traffic and at dusk the two streets fill with people strolling, having a drink, out for dinner, listening to buskers and watching street performers hoping to receive a few coins for their work. On Ripa di Porta Ticinese there is a beautiful bike that has been chained up beside the river for so long that flowers have grown around it. What is the mysterious reason behind the owner’s failure to come back and take it away?

Usually people look to enjoy Seville by taking its horse-drawn carriages, by trying tapas in the bars or seeing the fantastic tiles in Plaza de España, the work of ceramicists from Triana. However, very few visitors to Seville experience one of the finest boat journeys in Europe: a trip from the city to Sanlúcar de Barrameda, in Cadiz province, along the river known as the Great River, or the Guadalquivir, as it is in Arabic. Many cruises now offer the chance to do it while enjoying some fried fish, a dish that is one of Andalusia’s star attractions.

A primera vista, Bruselas es solo una ciudad aburrida, llena de edificios oficiales y abogados y sin mucho que ofrecer. Pero la realidad es otra. Tiene un centro histórico lleno de detalles y edificios preciosos. La Grand Place por la noche es bellísima. Y tiene repartidos por toda la ciudad muchos puntos de interés: el viejo Palacio Real y el actual, el Atomium, los parques, los edificios de la UE... Es cierto que hay que patear mucho pero vale la pena buscar esta visión global de la ciudad. Yo lo hice y he vuelto con una opinión radicalmente diferente de Bruselas.
A 12 kilómetros de la costa de Benalmádena vimos una tortuga boba (caretta caretta) y nos metimos en el agua para bañarnos. Mi padre sacó unas fotos con su cámara sumergible. No llevaba gafas de bucear, así que no sabía a qué estaba sacando fotos. Imagínate la sorpresa que nos llevamos cuando las vimos. Mandamos las fotos por email a la Universidad de Ciencias Marinas de Estados Unidos y nos dijeron que este ejemplar tiene unos diez años y que, aparte de los percebes que luce, parece estar bien. Bueno, no hemos visto ningún delfín este año pero sí uno de los reptiles menos comunes del mundo, que no está nada mal.
Tras el río Tevere, el barrio de Trastevere muestra todo su esplendor a aquellos que quieran perderse por sus calles empedradas. Callejuelas y placitas aparecen por sorpresa. Sus fachadas pintorescas color ocre y una vegetación enredadiza que parece no tener fin aportan una atmósfera increíble, un lugar de paz donde perderse y una alternativa a las visitas sofocantes de los monumentos de la Roma clásica. El Trastevere mola de día y de noche.
At first sight, Brussels is a boring city full of office buildings and lawyers, but not much else. But keep looking. The historical centre has lots of lovely details and some splendid architecture. The Grand Place looks really beautiful at night. There are lots of things to see all over the city: the old royal palace, and the current one; the Atomium; the parks; the EU buildings… You certainly have to walk a distance to get around but it is worth it for a proper look at the place. I did it and I have come back with a totally different opinion about Brussels.

Twelve Km’s fron the coastal town of Benalmádena we spotted a Loggerhead turtle and jumped in for a swim. Daddy snapped away with his waterproof camera without goggles he did not know what he was photographing. Imagine our surprise when the attached photos came out. We emailed a Marine University in America and they said she looks about ten years old and that apart from the barnacles on her she looked well. We may not have seen Dolphins this year but we saw one of the rarest reptiles in the World whilst sailing the Mediterranean.

Across the Tiber, the Trastevere area is the place to go to get lost in splendid cobbled streets with alleys and tiny squares round every corner. The picturesque, ochre-coloured facades and the ever-present climbing plants make for a really different atmosphere, a peaceful place to wander around and an alternative to those suffocating visits to the monuments of classical Rome. Trastevere is great by day and by night.

Este fue el primer viaje que hice a París. Visité Disneyland, que era el regalo de mi 10 cumpleaños. En el parque me asusté mucho en la atracción que se llama Hollywood Tower, pero a la vez era muy divertido. Sin duda, este es el mejor regalo que he tenido. También visité la ciudad. Subí a lo alto del Arco del Triunfo. Las vistas eran muy bonitas e incluso se veía la torre Eiffel. Fue interesante ver lo que hemos estudiado en clase. Me ha encantado París y espero poder volver pronto.
La derruida iglesia Convento do Carmo ha quedado en la ciudad de Lisboa como el monumento que recuerda a las 90.000 personas que murieron en el terremoto que sacudió la capital lusa en 1755. Y la sensación que uno tiene al visitar este enorme edificio sin techo es contradictoria. Por una parte, resulta bellísimo ver cómo las largas columnas que en su día soportaron las bóvedas de la iglesia hoy acaban en un bonito cielo azul. Por otra, uno no puede dejar de entristecerse al recordar que el techo se hundió en plena misa y sepultó a todos los que hasta allí acudieron para refugiarse de los efectos del terremoto.
Es ver a un cachas desnudo y volverme loca... ¡¡¡Imagínate ver a siete!!!..., aunque sean de hormigón. El realismo de esta escultura, que se conoce como Os Redeiros, dedicada al trabajo y ubicada en el centro de Vigo, me dejó perplejo. Bíceps, tríceps, cuádriceps, dorsales…, vamos, unos cuerpazos de escándalo para representar la dureza del trabajo de los hombres de la mar. ¡Ya podía haber aprendido Botero lo que es una buena... proporción!
This was my first visit to Paris. I visited Disneyland, which was a present for my 10th birthday. There is a ride at the park called Hollywood Tower, which was quite scary but fun too. It really was the best present ever. I also visited the city. We went up to the top of the Arc de Triomphe. The views were lovely and you could even see the Eiffel Tower. It was interesting to see things we had studied at school. I loved Paris and I would like to go back again soon.

The ruined Convento do Carmo has remained standing in the city of Lisbon as a monument in memory of the 90,000 people that died in the earthquake which shook the Portuguese capital in 1755. The sensation you have on visiting this roofless building is rather contradictory. It is wonderful to see those long columns, which once supported the church’s vaults, now standing below blue sky. It is also sad to reflect on the fact that the roof came down in the middle of a mass, burying those who had fled there for refuge and shelter.

If just one buff body sends me wild… what about seven?!! Even if they are made of concrete. The realism of the sculpture known as Os redeiros, a work dedicated to fishing and located in the centre of Vigo, really struck me. Biceps, triceps, quadriceps, dorsals… let’s just say that these strong boys really show how hard fishermen work. Botero could take something from this, about how to show some good… proportions.
