SOMEONE YOU SHOULD KNOW...
I
have had Dobermans on and off my whole life. It all started with Heidi. My family adopted her from the Humane Society. Heidi lived to the ripe old age of 17 and we were hooked. I grew up showing Arabian horses. After I moved out on my own, I couldn’t afford to show horses so I got into Dobermans. I got my first male, Brody. Brody was my baby, he was eager to please and loved to work. We were inseparable. We worked together every day. Brody and I achieved a Schutzhund III title, he was an incredible dog. As life moved forward, I had children and Brody didn’t take to that too well. I made arrangements and sent Brody back to his breeder. That was one of the saddest days in my life. It literally broke my heart and I swore I would never get another Doberman again. As the kids got older and started to get into sports and stuff, I missed the dog world. I did some research and decided to get a boxer. I showed for a while and then my girls took over. We bred a few champions, and I just let the girls do the showing. Eventually the girls picked their own breeds to show and that was it for the boxers. I was content watching my girls and being a hockey mom. I own a grooming shop in a little strip mall. Next door to my shop is a pizza parlor. One day Bill, the guy from the pizza parlor, came over to my shop with a little mutt full of mange he rescued from a dumpster in the city. Bill had never had a dog. He decided to keep “Scrapdog”, and he was always coming to the shop to ask questions. We became close and eventually started dating. Bill wanted to get another dog for Scrapdog to play with, so I suggested a Doberman. I convinced Bill to get a show quality Doberman. He got a big red male, Rush, Scrapdog’s best friend.
Next thing you know I’m back in Dobermans. We got a motor home and started to hit the shows. Bill driving, me mentoring, and the girls showing. Tara has since gone on to be a professional handler. Taylor shows our Dobermans now, not without a little sibling rivalry. Both my girls are great handlers. It’s great we get to do this as a family, making memories, the girls competing, it’s really fun.

It’s a family affair That was in 2006. My girls planned on showing him, and I got the itch to get another Doberman myself. While looking around I came across Trotyl. I first saw the picture of Trotyl and he was just stunning to me. I had to have a Trotyl daughter. I contacted Aquarius Dobermans and got put on the “list”. I knew that meant no puppy for me. After all, we were new to the breed in the show world. We did find a black bitch out of Trotyl from Hamlet Kennel, Ch. Hamlet’s Black Kenya, our first champion. We went to our first show in Belleville, Illinois. This was Bill’s first ever dog show. Rush went winners dog and Kenya went winners bitch. Both from the puppy classes. Bill was hooked.

And then there was Trotyl.. I was always talking to Ron Babics about dogs and type. Bill and I both like the South American look and temperament. Bill is always studying pedigrees and sending proposed breedings to Ron and Jim for their opinion. We became good friends just talking on the phone for hours. Ron was in the Air Force at the time and got transferred to Scott Air Force Base which is 45 minutes from my house. There was a problem with Trotyl being on base, so I volunteered to keep him until Ron got everything situated. By this time, Bill and I had acquired three Trotyl daughters, the foundation for our breeding program. All of them are champion producing. Having Trotyl around the house was very entertaining. He’s such a good boy to live with, very comical. His daughters would boss him around. He was always gentle with puppies, they would climb and play on him and he would just lay there. Tara worked with Trotyl, got him into show condition. She showed him a few times, got a group placement. Ron eventually got a residence off base, so it was time for Trotyl to go home. It was hard to let Trotyl go because he became one of the family. He visits occasionally, we watch him sometimes. He doesn’t forget his spot on the couch.
The future? Not real sure what the future holds. We took a little break from the dogs for family health reasons. But now we have some young bitches that we have produced that are just now ready for the ring. We also have a promising young Lex son that we got from Jim Briley that is just starting his show career. Hopefully we get to keep producing beautiful Dobermans, going to shows, spending time with dog show friends and make some new friends along the way.

Just for fun, can you tell us something few people know about you? There isn’t much people don’t know about me because I have a big mouth. I guess one thing would be that I was born in England.

The Biggest Thrill of My Life By Erin Laplante
I
have my mom to thank for sharing her contagious love for the Doberman breed. She grew up with poodles, but always wanted a Doberman. We lost our family Doberman, Cella (I named her after my first doll), to bone cancer on my birthday. It was an extreme loss for our family and we will never forget her. We began to look for another family member. After a long search, we found breeder Betsy Zellmer, who got us started in the “dog show world”. Little did we know we would be going to the 2014 Doberman Nationals two years later. Our little Doberman puppy, Shamrock, was a great addition to our family and she immediately found a very special place in my heart. I started training her when she was very young. It was a challenge because we were both beginners, but this also made us a great team because we relied on each other. My first show was a bit disappointing, but afterward I knew showing dogs was my passion. One show led to the next and before we knew it I was showing every other weekend: sometimes every weekend in the summer. I also started showing in the Junior Showmanship competition. In my first year of showing, I learned a lot, especially that you lose much more often than you win. Shamrock and I improved more and more at every show. We started to become a great team. The next year my goal was to qualify for Westminster Junior Showmanship. I am very determined, and I was not going to let this goal slip past me. Toward the end of the deadline, I was one win away from qualifying. This was the hardest part because I wanted it so badly and I put a lot of pressure on myself. During this time I didn’t show as well as I had been, and I walked out of the ring without a Best Junior ribbon several times. Ultimately, this made me more deter-

mined to reach my goal. I finally got my qualifying win in Springfield, Illinois. I was going to Westminster!! The highlight of my year was attending the the 2014 Doberman Nationals. Being there was amazing. It wasn’t like a normal all breed show where everyone has a different favorite breed. Everyone was sharing their love for Dobermans. In the hotel, you would see people walking Dobermans in and out of the hotel, Dobermans riding up the elevator, Dobermans in the lobby, Dobermans going in and out of rooms... DOBERMANS EVERYWHERE!! The first day was incredible, just to be there was fun. The next day I woke up immediately and practically screamed to my mom and Betsy that I was so excited/nervous and could hardly wait!! I got Sham out of her crate and kind of danced around the room with her and then quickly got ready. On to the actual competition. It felt like forever until my number was called into the ring. I was surrounded by talented professional handlers, breeders, and owner handlers and I had never been in such a huge ring before. Shamrock was on fire the second we walked into the ring and she never lost her stride. I didn’t expect to win, I just hoped we could make a good showing. After we went around the ring one last time, the judge, Peggy Esposito, pointed to me and asked me to go to the front of the line. She made her final decisions, and I had won! I was so happy, I started crying happy tears. I got a picture with Ms. Esposito and then put Sham in her crate to rest before Winners Bitch.

There were 12 classes total, which meant 12 beautiful bitches I was fortunate to compete against. I also competed against some of the best handlers from around the world, many who were kind enough to support me throughout my journey in the “dog show world.” Shamrock was focused. Everything and everyone was a blur. All I could think of was what I had to do to make Sham look perfect. She had never shown better. It was like something turned her on and she couldn’t stop showing. Everyone went around the ring one last time and Ms. Esposito walked over to table where the ribbon lay. Then she picked it up and walked toward us and pointed to us. I think I just stood there for a second and wondered if she was really pointing to me. I honestly didn’t believe what happened. I was so grateful. I couldn’t stop smiling and shaking! So many people came up to me and congratulated us. It made me feel good that so many people were rooting for me. The next day I would compete for Best of Winners. That same night, I went to the banquet. It was a great place to celebrate and meet my friends, knowledgeable breeders, and respected handlers. I could barely sleep that night, I was so thrilled. The next day Best of Breed competitors were in the ring and it seemed like forever until Winners Dog and Winners Bitch (Shamrock and I) were called in to join them. I could feel the intensity of all the competitors — everyone was here for one reason, to win. The ring was filled with incredible Dobes. Shamrock showed her heart out and never stopped. The judge, Mr. Adrian Woodfork, announced the Awards of Merit and then picked up the Best of Winners ribbon. It felt like everyone was holding their breath: I know I was. Mr. Woodfork then pointed to us and my heart stopped. I joyfully took the ribbon and thanked him for the biggest thrill of my life. I was on Cloud 9! I want to thank the people who have contributed to my success from my first show forward. I couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you!! Thanks to those who took part in making the Juniors Top Twenty competition so special. My appreciation goes to the DPCA which afforded me the opportunity to participate in my first nationals ever and provided me the memory of a lifetime.

2014 Doberman Pinscher Club of There was a Showdown in the Heartland… the DPCA National By Faye Strauss
Just returned from the National and I am exhausted but invigorated. There was so much to do and so many great dogs to see. I will be telling you about the events at the national not the winners. Other sections of the magazine will discuss the winners. I arrived late Friday evening and immediately went to see the ring. Decoration chair Glen Lajeski and his team of Hillary Zimmerman and Peter Holson did an amazing job. The ring had straw bales topped with Indian blankets and saddles for ring stanchions holding up thick rope, surrounded by flowers and pumpkins. It looked western glorious and remained great throughout the week. Many mornings you could find Glen watering the flowers. Booths lined the ring, selling everything Doberman including jewelry, fudge and clothing. The archives booth was playing videos from nationals past. We were ready for the Showdown in the Heartland. The shows started early Saturday with agility judged by Ms. Bowers, obedience trials judged by Ms. Schneider and Ms. Kincaid, sweeps judged by Mrs. Auch at the first regional. My husband, Gary judged the first regional; he started at 11:30 in the morning and finished by 10:30 at night, with over an hour lunch break. He had a great time and found many stars. Sunday brought more agility judged by Ms. Bowers, obedience judged by Ms. Schneider and Ms. Kincaid, sweeps judged by Ms. Brotherhood and the 2nd regional judged by Mr. Schulman. Mrs. Strauss and Dr. Jacobson judged the juniors. These were two marathon days! Monday began with a WAE test and working dog seminar. For lunch we invited the members to a buffet feast and our first ever “Honor the Effort” photo session. The decorating committee had the room popping with gigantic sunflowers. I would like to rename the event “Honor the Effort Kickoff to the Annual Meeting”. Show photographer, Tom Wiegand, took pictures of each group of recipients (19 groups in all). We honored all the titles garnered by members in the 2013-2014 DPCA calendar year. We know how hard it is to achieve a title and how

much work it takes and the DPCA wants to recognize these efforts. We congratulate all who achieved in AKC activities, IPO (Schutzhund), therapy, service, and barn hunt. Then we honored the breeders of those dogs, committee chairs and the show committee. The photos were on display in the ring area for the rest of the week and will be in the archives booth next year. Plan to attend this celebration next year and get your picture taken in Lancaster. The general meeting followed. There was the presentation of awards and we inducted our first Ryan Award winner, Sharon Marinelli. Her dog achieved Top 20 in obedience and conformation in the same year. We all adjourned to get ready for the conformation Top 20. The Top 20 conformation was the culmination of a very busy day. The stars were out for this black tie event. Everyone was dressed impeccably and people and dogs were looking good. To kick off the event the past winners came out to the applause of the crowd. Tuesday was a day of seminars for breeders, exhibitors and fanciers. At 4 pm, the Generation Forward committee hosted their first meet and greet. They served appetizers and everyone was asked to find their corresponding number (attached to their name tag). It was a good icebreaker and everyone met people they hadn‘t known before. Following the Meet and Greet the Generation Forward had their first Round Robin Tournament. Chair Charlene Dunnam and members Malory Ross, Mallori Nickerson and Leah Petesch arranged a great event. The trophies were beautiful and everything went very smoothly. The first judge was Cindy Huckfelt and each class winner thereafter judged the next class until the finals, where club President Michelle Santana judged best in Tournament. Afterwards we adjourned to watch the Agility Top 20. These dog and handler teams are amazing. The event started with the retiring super dogs doing an exhibition only run through the course. Many were ten years old and older, they looked great and the crowds cheered. Wednesday was obedience judging with Mr. Garvin and futurity day, Mrs. Janis

Smith doing the veterans sweeps and Mr. Miyagawa judging the futurity. His grand prize futurity winner was Mr. Strauss’s Best of winners, Mrs. Auch’s Best in Sweeps and Mr. Schulman’s RWB. Afterwards there were many meetings to attend. I attended the chapter club meeting where we discussed how to increase membership and funds. I also attended the JEC annual Mentor meeting, we discussed how to get the most out of a mentoring session and how to approach and help floundering judges. Hiroko Lee hosted the ever-popular international get together. Hiroko has turned this event into a party and it is well attended and enjoyed by all. That evening the Top 20 Obedience contenders competed for the honors. What amazing team work. Thursday was dog judging with Ms. Capstick, presiding. After judging, the JEC filmed the Top 20 dogs for an educational project that will be on our web site. That evening DPCA hosted the health seminars, which are always very enlightening. At dark, we had another first time event, a Night Walk. Doug and Jackie Matson prepared a fun walk, through ten stations in a park like setting. It was a fun and educational to see how the dogs reacted to the new stimuli. This will be a must-attend event at future nationals. Friday was bitch judging adjudicated by Ms. Esposito and the judge’s education seminar. That evening we enjoyed the ever-popular Cope banquet. Dogs and people were honored and lots of money was collected for rescue. It was a celebration with great raffle items, lots of food, drinks and laughs. Saturday saw the culmination of the show with BOB judging. Mr.

Woodford sorted through 140 dogs and came up with very worthy winners. During lunch, we watched the Juniors Top 20 event. When the show was over, we had a wrap up pizza party ringside, and a slideshow of the week’s candid photos. THE GENESIS The AMERICAN DOBERMAN PINSCHER EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, founded in 1994, was the brainchild of Frank Grover and Peggy Adamson. They along with Nancy Heitzman and Ann Lanier, publisher of the DOBERMAN QUARTERLY, began the process of collecting and preserving important documents concerning the Doberman. Perhaps the best description of the need for such a Foundation came from Mrs. Adamson herself.
CARRYING ON THE COMMITMENT Mrs. Adamson passed away in 1996 and Mr. Grover continued the foundation’s work until his death in 2007. Both of their extensive collections have been preserved and are a focal point of the A.D.P.E.F. website. Ann Lanier passed away earlier this year and had acted as facilitator to the collecting process & was very helpful in the identifying who’s who in old photos.. The A.D.P.E.F. at this time houses over 37,000 material archives and 40 hours of educational film. These archives include entire collections of many major contributors beyond those of Frank & Peggy. To ensure the safety of all archives, each has been meticulously photographed, cataloged and permanently installed onto two separate hard drives. The first of which is currently being used to create a website. The second hard drive, for security, is kept locked in a safety deposit box.

Thursday evening brought what we hope to be the start of many clubs holding a Night Walk. There have been some of these type of events held by UDC and other clubs in the past, but I am not aware of one for several years. They are based on the Night Test which is held in many countries in Europe as a graded test and is quite popular. The scenarios for the Night Walk or Night Test have many similarities to Mental Tests held during the daylight in some of the Scandinavian countries. We made some modifications to accommodate a range of age and experience of the dogs. The Night Walk offered 3 classes or age and experience levels; Puppy, Youth/Novice Adult, and Working Adult. I am a little reluctant to write this because part of the excitement of the night walk is the surprise for both the dog and handler. Unfortunately, it was a rainy night and we only had 10 dogs come through; 4 Puppies, 3 Youth/Novice Adult, and 3 Working Adults. I do think that everyone that went through the Night Walk enjoyed the experience. The intensity was increased with some of the scenarios with each level. The intent is to learn from your dog’s reaction and recovery and not to overly scare the dog or the handler. There are many different scenarios that can be presented and they are only limited by your imagination. The scenarios we chose for this initial Night Walk are as follows: Walk of Torches – A path or lane is lined with flaming Tikki torches spaced about 2 feet apart and 10-15 feet long. The Tunnel – A low arch or tunnel that requires the handler to stoop or crawl through the tunnel with their dog. The Falling Can – A trash can with another metal bucket and other iron or aluminum cans inside mysteriously falls over and makes noise while the dog and handler team walk by. The Ghost Out of The Box – As the team approaches, a ghost fly’s out of a box and hovers from a tree. The Noisy Wall – As the team walk by there is a wall of canvas or plastic and as they approach or pass by there are loud noises and something beating against the wall causing visual and audio stimulation. There can be loud or weird people noises and/or loud music. Man in a Sled – As the team strolls down the path a human form on a sled (or in our case a plastic crate bottom) comes out of the dark and crosses the path without any apparent means of locomotion.

The Hanging Man – As the team proceeds down the path they encounter a human form hanging from a tree. As they approach his arms start to flail wildly and he has a jug of rocks in one hand and a bag of cans with gravel in them in the other hand. Both make noise and visual action. The Stalker – The team proceeds down the path. At some point a stranger comes out of hiding and follows or stalks the team making more noise as it gets closer until noticed by the dog. Hopefully the dog will alert and bark or warn the handler and attempt to run off the stalker. The stalker makes some noise and runs away. The beauty of this scenario is that all other stimuli are in front of the team and this one approaches from behind. Runner Out of The Dark – As the team proceeds through the dark suddenly bright lights are turned on from a car in the face of the team and a man comes running from the dark toward the team. He runs by making noise at a reasonable distance for a puppy; louder and closer for the Youth/Novice Adult; for the Working Adult the runner is wearing a protection sleeve and the dog has the opportunity to make a grip where the helper will drive the dog, release the sleeve and run off into the darkness. Note: One of our helpers had to leave or we would have included this final scenario: The Broken Down Car – The team notices that there is a car parked in dim light such as under a parking lot light. As the team approaches, a man calls from the car that it is broken down and “Can I borrow your phone?” “Can you come closer? My leg is injured and it is difficult for me to walk.” The puppy team will stop approximately 20 feet away and after a small conversation the man will come out of the car, make a lot of noise and hopefully the puppy will bark and the bad guy will cry out and run off into the dark. The Youth/Novice team will stop closer to the car and the attacker will behave in the same manner, but with possibly a little more noise depending on the dog’s initial reaction. The Working Adult team will approach the car where the attacker will jump from the car with a protection sleeve on, engage the team where the dog will grip the sleeve. The attacker will drive the dog and at some point release the sleeve and run off into the dark. We hope that this Night Walk will be seen as a fun and educational event and will be presented by chapter clubs and at next year’s National.

2014 Doberman Pinscher Club of Regional #1, Judge Gary Strauss It was a privilege and unique experience to be able to examine so many good Dobes from all parts of the U.S. and from other countries as well. Judging 200 starting late morning was quite a daunting task. Perhaps I judged faster than I normally prefer, but, with the help of our wonderful ring stewards and overall show decor and atmosphere, I was able to focus very intently for more than 10 hours and award some very outstanding Dobes. The ring was of appropriate size, had good lighting, and bordered by rope and decorative straw bales rather than the usual show ring borders. This did make it easier to concentrate. In addition to the essential elements of the standard square, medium size, compact, proportion and substance, etc, - the Doberman is a working dog that is both elegant in appearance and well built (mental attributes included) to perform breed purpose or functions. Parts are in proportion and fit seamlessly so the total appears as ‘one piece.’ Proportion or balance, compact, and square are key and very much related - viewed from the top, front, and rear in addition to side profile. These are some basic principles used to guide evaluation. Best of Breed is an outstanding combination of the bone, substance, elegance, and balanced proportions. Her smoothness and deep full front is impressive. She has excellent layback of shoulder and the neck is of proper length that flows smoothly into the shoulders with no wrinkles. Front view revealed straight front legs, tight elbows, excellent breadth of brisket, and the desired slight oval body. All parts fit seamlessly both standing and moving. Gait was smooth, strong, true and ‘tight’ (i.e. profile remained in tact when moving.) Front, top, and rear views - not often readily observed at ringside - is of great importance in assessing proportion and balance. Best of Breed was very good from all views. Best Opposite stood in an impressive and imposing demeanor and appeared ready to perform breed functions. His proportions, combining into a very square appearance, were very good - in fact, his profile was remarkably close to the Dobe depicted in the DPCA illustrated standard. He has excellent bone, substance, and depth of body that he carried very well when moving as he exhibited energetic, powerful gait. He stopped and stood ‘4-square’ - i.e. legs straight and perpendicular to the ground. In addition, his head is strong and wedge-like with good under jaw. Winners Bitch and Best of Winners is truly extraordinary. We may never see a 6 month old puppy again that

is put together this well and move as ‘tight’ and strong as any adult. She excels in balance (front and rear angulation match), proportion, and very strong topline. Besides exhibiting attributes that conform to the standard, she is so smooth that she appears sculptured from granite. She also has outstanding color, markings, and very dark eye - especially for

2014 Doberman Pinscher Club of Regional #1, Judge Gary Strauss continued a red. I cannot say much more than “she is simply stunning.” Reserve Winners Bitch had a beautiful blue coat and built very well. She has good proportions, bone and substance, depth of body, and moved very well. Similar to other Dobes considered for the top awards, her gait is very close to ‘single tracking.’ Winners Dog was also puppy, but older than Winners Bitch as he was in the 9-12 class. He has very good proportions and smoothness. His front is exceptional as he has good layback, straight feet, and depth of brisket. His movement was smooth and energetic. Reserve Winners dog was a puppy from the 6-9 class. He is compact, elegant, square and balanced with good bone and substance. He definitely has a bright future ahead of him. The Select Dog and Bitch had many attributes similar to BOS and BOB. The were many outstanding specials that received AOM awards. Each had many outstanding attributes. Because of the late hour that Best of Breed was judged, I did not attempt to sort AOMs in order of preference. Again, it was a pleasure and honor to examine so many good Dobes.

Regional #2, Judge Harry H. “Butch” Schulman Judging the DPCA Regional puts the real meaning of that line from Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet to the test – “Young men’s love then lies, not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.” After that long, grueling day standing on my feet for over ten hours, I realized I am not so young anymore. But, while my heart wanted to give every single Doberman in my ring a blue ribbon, my eyes passionately gravitated toward what I believed was the most correct breed type. In many instances, the quality was so deep, it was like splitting hairs. In the end, I was quite pleased with the outcome of my decisions. WD (D’Rays The Buck Stops Here) from the 6-9 Puppy class was beautifully balanced and well-angulated front and rear for such a youngster. He was square, compactly built, and age appropriately muscled with a short back and straight, firm topline that held in motion as he effortlessly single-tracked around my ring. He came from the most competitive class in dogs that day and remained poised and well-behaved in Winners like a mature veteran. WB/BOW (Raindance Star of India) from the 12-18 class was a real stand out. No matter where or when I turned, she captured my attention from every angle. Her elegant, well-arched nape of neck widening gradually toward her body was one of the most exquisite neck sets I have ever seen. She was square, compactly built, gracefully powerful without any lack of femininity, well-angulated and correctly balanced from both rear and frontal views. Her back was short and firm while the Queen could have served tea on her topline. Her legs were straight and parallel to each

other, her hocks were perpendicular to the ground, and she single-tracked well at a fast trot. She was a nonstop showboat in Winners, and competed against adorable, sound, and may be ready for prime time in another year or two, but without a doubt, on this day she was the best bitch in my ring. BOS (GCH. CH. Dezperado’s Hallelujah) has always been one of my favorite bitches in the breed ring today. I had the privilege of awarding her the first two points in her show career and the honor of awarding her the final major at a specialty to complete her championship title. She is a classic bitch, powerful and muscular yet feminine, square, compactly built, and shown in hard working condition. Her virtues are timeless and her entire package exudes ideal breed type. Her silhouette, both standing and in motion, is absolutely gorgeous and she will always hold a special place in my heart. BOB (GCH. CH. Phillmar Superman) is as near perfection to the standard as a Doberman can be. He is extremely elegant and noble, of proud carriage, masculine, muscular and powerful without being overdone, and sustained balanced angulation in motion front and rear with vigorous and harmonious fluidity. His superb reach and drive and rock hard, level topline on the go around was flawless and truly the prototype for side movement in this breed. The beauty and smoothness to his layback of shoulder was either crafted by the hands Michelangelo or a precious gift from God. From rear and frontal view, his breadth of hips was equal to his breadth of body at the ribcage and shoulder. From the impeccable detail of head

2014 Doberman Pinscher Club of with his alert, fearless and energetic expression to his square body of correct proportions, I could not fault this dog. He owned the ground he stood on and his presence was simply magnificent. As I moved around the ring to have a silent conversation with each of my finalists, he had a look of eagles that for a brief but rare moment invited me through a window into his soul. I was surprised to hear in the photo session afterwards that my Select Dog (CH. Phillmar Man of Steel) was not only the Best in Sweeps winner from earlier that morning, but also sired by my BOB dog. I almost fell over backwards when his handler informed me that I had spent 30 minutes or more comparing the virtues between father and son in my final cut. This young red dog was lovely and will be a force to be reckoned with at full maturity. Select Bitch (GCH. CH. Mandre’s Just My Style Glen Coe) was a pretty black bitch with a phenomenal shoulder and neck set. She was extremely balanced and beautifully presented in a final cut of exceptional bitches. This assignment was the thrill of a lifetime that I will cherish forevermore. I hope I have the chance to judge the DPCA Regional or National again someday as it is truly an experience unlike any other in our wonderful sport. I wish all members of the Doberman Pinscher fancy the very best in all endeavors as well as a joyous holiday season and a healthy and happy New Year.

2014 Doberman Pinscher Club of Regional #1 Sweepstakes, Judge Eve Auch First I would like to thank you for bestowing the honor of judging this beautiful entry of 70 Sweepstakes puppies and veterans. It is a thrill to judge the up and coming puppies while also judging the ones that came before them. Though Saturday morning came early, it was well worth the 7:00 a.m. start time. A special thank you to my ring stewards, Judy Smith, Barbara Bender and Margaret Downey. They kept things running smoothly and kept me on track while judging 64 puppies and 6 veterans.. My overall impressions of the puppies is that the breeders are doing a good job. There were quite a few beautiful head pieces with correct eyes (both in color and shape) and under jaw, lovely flows of neck into shoulder and level top lines which have improved over the past couple of years. Tail sets, while still exhibiting some gay tails, also have improved. Very few puppies were down on their pasterns and most had tight, catlike feet. Another thing that has improved was the length of body. While there are still some long-bodied puppies, more now fit into the picture frame as square. And I was especially delighted to have rock solid temperaments. I did not have a single dog, puppy or veteran, shy away from being judged. While there were very few missing teeth, there was quite a few extra teeth, especially button molars and premolars. One young dog had an overshot jaw which may or may not correct with age. One area needing improvement on more than a few dogs was movement. There were some beautiful dogs standing on the line but when they moved they were wide, crossing over, flipping pasterns and loose elbows. While certainly not in the majority, there were enough movement problems to give concern. The Doberman, being a working dog, needs to be able to move correctly in order to do the job for which he was bred. Reach and drive was also a concern on several puppies where they were pulling with their front instead of driving off their rears. This was a large ring and gave these puppies plenty of opportunity to move out. My Grand Sweepstakes winner was a very sound red bitch puppy from the 6-9 month class. She was just 6 months 6 days old and was beautifully presented by Carissa Shimpeno. This bitch, Gemini Princess Sansa Stark V Alisaton, went on to a five point major later in the day, reserve to 5 point major the next day, and then Grand Futurity Prize winner. She was the total package with a square body, sound movement and attitude. While a bit 40 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine
GRAND SWEEPSTAKES WINNER Gemini Princess Sansa Stark v Alisaton Heidi Boettcher, Marion Collins, Gwen DeMilta Carissa Demilta Shimpeno on the small side, her confidence was that of a much older bitch. I simply could not fault her as all the pieces were put together correctly. Coupled with her dynamic personality this girl was a standout. There was also a very nice 6-9 month puppy dog that won his class of 14 and gave my Grand Sweepstakes bitch a run for the money. He was D’Rays The Buck Stops Here, presented by Jana Dupre. Like the bitch above, this dog took a 5 point major at the Regionals. It was a difficult decision with both puppies being a breeder’s dream. I predict a successful career for this puppy dog. The Best Junior was GCh Raklyns Field Of Dreams Alisaton presented by Mary Leahy from the 12-18 bitch class. This was another very standard bitch with good movement and a square body. The winner of the 12-18 puppy dog class was Ch. Phillmar Man Of Steel, presented by Diego Garcia. The Veterans Sweepstakes is always a hard assignment. I never want to choose a winner because they are all winners. However, at the end of the day, GCH Vondura’s Black Magic Woman CD RAE MX AXJ could not be denied. At almost 8 1/2 years young, she was definitely a stand out. It was exciting to hear that she is still competing in agility and has many more titles behind her name than the ones mentioned in the catalog. Again, thank you for allowing me the pleasure of judging the youngsters as well as the veterans who always touch the soft spot in my heart.

Regional #2 Sweepstakes, Judge Alisa Brotherhood I was honored to be selected to judge the Sweepstakes at the DPCA Regional Specialty. I’d like to thank my wonderful and efficient ring stewards: Judy Smith, Margaret Downey and Barbara Bender. You all are amazing! In general there was good depth of quality in most all classes. I found in many of the classes a variety of types within the class. It was my intention for me to be consistent faced with a number of types shown. I discovered after judging that I’d placed many litter mates in their respective classes. I strived to be consistent in looking for overall balance, smooth neck into shoulders and the correct layback of shoulder with clean movement. My Best Puppy was a beautiful red bitch from the 6-9 class. She was wonderfully balanced, very typey and beautifully trained and presented. A clear standout in her class. My Best Junior and Best In Sweepstakes was an outstanding red male from the 12-18 class. I was very impressed with this male in his breed type, large round bone, masculinity, smoothness of neck into shoulder and clean movement with a wonderful side gait. And to top it all off - a beautiful head! Also beautifully trained and presented. I so enjoyed judging the Veterans as well. My only regret is that there were only 4 of them shown! My Best Veteran was a lovely bitch from the 7-9 class. I wish all the puppies that were shown to me much success in the future. It was an honor to judge you.

I would like to thank everybody that voted for me to judge the DPCA Futurity for the second time. I had a great time judging the National and thank you for bringing me such beautiful exhibits. It is exciting to see the future of our breed, in the flesh, in the ring at our National specialty. I saw dogs with good upper arms, nice bend of stifle, short backs, and pretty heads. I had a few missing teeth, but overall, I thought the quality was outstanding. The breeders are all headed in the right direction. They are breeding Dobermans that look like the standard with correct temperaments.

2014 Doberman Pinscher Club of Dogs, Veteran Dogs & Stud Dogs, Judge Beverly Capstick It was my pleasure to judge the dog classes at the DPCA National. Thank you so much for this great honor and your vote of confidence. Special thanks to my fantastic stewards that kept things moving, the photographer and of course the exhibitors. This was an experience I will long remember. The placements in each class are available online and elsewhere in the magazine, so I will not be redundant. Instead I would like to reflect my observations on the total dog entry. Head styles varied considerably. Gone are the days where you could recognize individual breeders lines by the head alone. Length of muzzle to backskull was equal in the majority of the entries. The biggest change in the heads concerns wider back skulls and lack of fill under the eyes. Eyes varied from oval to round, large to very small with differences in placement. Light eyes were the exception rather than the rule and the breeders should take credit for this change. Eye placement needs attention as there were a number of dogs with eyes set close together, giving a very different expression and not the “look of eagles” for which we strive. Ear sets were very good, but oh my, the length of ear is getting so extreme! Very few were short in neck but the layback of shoulder is still a major problem in our breed. I was happy to see the toplines improving and the rear feet placed correctly by the handlers, but the balance between front and rear angulation was evident in many sickle
hocks while gaiting. Proportions varied but there were more square dogs than seen in the past. Depth of chest was good, although the junction of the ribs and xiphoid process (cartilage at end of sternum) was located very close if not between the front legs! This is a problem occurring in many breeds. This produces extreme tuck up in some cases and makes the loin appear longer, even in a square dog. Length of leg in proportion to depth of body seems to be improving but not yet 50/50. Temperaments were very good with a few showing lack of experience rather than poor temperament. In regard to bites, occlusion is still a problem. Majority had nice scissors bites, with three level and one wry mouth. There were a lot of extra premolars in the upper jaw and a few dogs with missing teeth. The exhibitors are to be commended for the “clean teeth” and overall conditioning of their dogs. Gaiting is improving on the “go around” as well as the “down and back”. There is still room for improvement due to a lot of toeing in and/or moving wide in front. Biggest problem in the rear assembly is moving sickle hocked and high tail sets. We are looking for a square, heavy boned, medium size, working dog with a blunt wedge head, good under jaw, erect ears and dark oval eyes. The breed has come a long way, keep up the good work and once again thank you for this opportunity.

2014 Doberman Pinscher Club of Bitches, Veteran Bitches & Brood Bitch, Judge Peggy Esposito It was with great honor and pleasure having been selected as one of the judges to judge the Bitch, Veterans and Brood Bitch Classes at our National Specialty. My over all perception of the bitches was one that the Breeders/Owners should be complemented on as the future producers of our great breed. My winner’s class was very strong and there were more than a few I could have selected as Winners & Reserve. Winners Bitch (FAYEK I’LL TAKE ANOTHER) was a lovely black bitch from the American Bitch Class shown by a young junior to perfection. This bitch had a lovely head and expression with dark eyes. Her neck flowed smoothly into her topline and correct tail set. Her front and rear movement going down and back was in a straight line with correct foot placement. She held her topline while showing good reach and drive in her side movement. Over all she was very balanced and showed correct breed type. Reserve Winners Bitch (DEMOR’S WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS) was from the 9-12 Black Bitch Class. This lovely young bitch was very square and I loved her soundness and bone. Her dark eyes and expression made me smile as I began to examine her. She too moved cleanly down & back in a straight line with correct foot placement. She held her strong topline showing good reach and drive while going around. I would have been proud to have owned any of the bitches in the winner’s class. Veterans Class (CH. NOVA’S ZIA V KELVIEW) went to the 11 plus bitch that did not look her age and was in beautiful condition. She still could have held her own in the Specials Class. Brood Bitch Class (GCH KALIBER’S TENNESSEE WALTZ CA) she produced two lovely get that were very constant in breed type. From my observation our breed still is lacking in under jaw with some lacking in correct muzzle proportions to back skull. There were more round eyes than I would have liked to have seen. Teeth for the most part were correct with 42 however, there were more extra pre-molars and small teeth than expected. A few missing incisors, pre-molars and molar M3 in the bottom jaw. I think our fronts have improved for the most part with tight elbows however, with that said I saw too many longer hawks in the rears. I was very impressed with temperaments and think as breeders we are doing a good job. There was minimal control from the handlers during examination all stood soundly while approaching from the front and rear. I would like to say thank you for a job well done by our DPCA Members so many putting in long hours behind the scene to put on a super nationals. A special thank you to my hard working stewards Judy Smith, Barbara Bender and Margaret Downey without them I could not have done my job. Thank you to the Breeders/Owners and Exhibitors for bringing me such a fine line up of bitches. You all should be very proud to have represented our wonderful Doberman Pinschers.

2014 Doberman Pinscher Club of Showdown in the Heartland… Eye candy! By Adrian Woodfork- Best of Breed judge It was a privilege and honor to judge the Best of Breed competition at the Doberman Pinscher Club of America National in Topeka. The setting was fabulous. The weather was awesome. People came in from all over the world. And of course, the beautiful Dobermans made it a dream come true! Win or lose, the DPCA National is the greatest showcase for our breed. Breeders get to mingle and share stories and see dogs that they only wondered about. As a judge, I get to sort out and select the ones that impressed me the most… on that day! I can’t tell you how much fun it was… there aren’t words to describe it. What made it soooo exciting and challenging for me was the quality of the dogs, showmanship and sportsmanship. I commend the exhibitors for bringing forth some of the most amazing Doberman champions for the fancy to view. For me, it was pure eye candy. I could not make a decision on which dogs stood out without the help of a pen and note pad. I did not want to accidentally miss one. While my favorite music (I put together a playlist of easy listening oldies from Nat King Cole to Frank Sinatra to Ann Murray to Patsy Cline to Motown) was playing in the background, I concentrated on the pluses each dog was bringing to table and tabulated a score accordingly. The problem was there were not enough ribbons to go around. But, a decision had to be made, and in the end, the most pluses went to a well-muscled (conditioned), well-balanced, typey, square red bitch that moved beautifully and struck a pose with the intensity of a Hollywood Diva. This bitch was the WOW factor. GCh. Dezperado’s Hallelujah owned by Jacqueline and Alan Wendt and shown flawlessly by Linda George. The best opposite sex dog, GCh. O’s Godiva Dark Demitasse Ca DJ owned by Mary Ann Byrns and Pat Onley was a strong contender as was the select dog GCh. Goldgrove High Intensity and select bitch GCh. Cambria’s Vraiment Parfait. The award of merit selections were wonderful representatives of the breed, as were the few who were left standing in the end as finalists. To get to the final line-up, they had to be square, balanced, well-conditioned with a strong topline when moving. In addition, I love a dog that exudes confidence when standing on their own, and in the end they were the ones who were left standing in the winners circle. There are so many people to thank for making this National a five-star event. So I say thank you big time! But a special note of gratitude must be given to President Michelle Santana, the show chairman Janet Van Wormer and event chairman Joanie Krieg who worked all year to make it happen.
