MIRA DEVELOPS INTERLINKED DOUBLE WISHBONE SUSPENSION Vehicle dynamicists at engineering and test consultancy MIRA Ltd have developed and patented a unique suspension design that answers a conundrum which has long-faced car designers and manufacturers utilising the traditional double wishbone suspension layout - how to optimise their product for handling and comfort? MIRA’s reputation for identifying and finding smart solutions to problems saw a team of engineers deployed on an internal project to develop a revolutionary design that would allow the optimisation of both.

CEL COMPONENTS OFFERS POWER OF PREPREG PRODUCTION TO NEW PLAYERS CEL Components will bring a prepreg manufacturing system, designed to open up the market for a whole new range of companies, to the UK for the first time this November, as part of the Composites Engineering exhibition. The TG-50 and TG60 machines are designed to make prepreg production a possibility for companies previously deterred from this lucrative production market by the high levels of capital investment. The machines offer a comprehensive system for industrial and aerospace-grade prepreg production that is more cost-effective than anything currently available.

UKQMS achieves certification to ISO9001:2008

BURCAS SAVES CUSTOMERS THOUSANDS OF POUNDS UK precision engineering company, Burcas, has implemented the Xactio web portal from CANDA Systems to support Kanban ‘push-pull’ in the supply chain. Customers can now view stock availability and costs in real time. This has enabled some customers to reduce their stock holding by a six figure sum. The need to accurately and cost effectively monitor real time supply chain performance provided the driving force for Burcas to implement the Xactio web portal.

ATLAS COMPOSITES NOMINATED FOR EXCELLENCE IN INNOVATION AWARD Atlas Composites, who this year celebrate 15 years UK Composites manufacturing, hope to be celebrating again on the 28th September after being nominated in two categories for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce Best Business Awards 2012. The awards, aimed at recognising and rewarding the achievements of successful local firms and business leaders, are split into nine different categories and will be presented at two gala black tie awards dinners.

CONFUSED? ASK THE EXPERT! A brand new ‘Ask the Expert’ show floor service is introduced at this year’s Composites Engineering Show, hosted by headline partner NetComposites. Providing visitors with the opportunity to sit down with one of their own expert project team members for ‘on the spot’ assistance, the service (from the NetComposites stand#1143) is designed to help attendees make their time in the hall as focused and directed as possible, with immediately available independent assistance on the ‘what’, ‘where’ and ‘who’ in composite materials design & processing.

UKQMS are pleased to announce that after the successful completion of the two-stage ISO9001:2008 by the certification body BSi, they have been recommended for certification and in October 2012 will receive their certificate scope which is: “Supply of people, engineering, business improvement and management systems resources and products to aerospace, automotive and commercial businesses throughout the UK and the rest of the world.”

ARPRO® enables inrekor™ to meet automotive weight-saving targets

MSA can now cut laminates

A recent market research report from Frost & Sullivan predicts that cars will average only 5% weight reduction before 2015. Despite all car-makers acknowledging that weight savings are the fastest and most efficient route to CO2 reduction (a reduction of 100 kg equates to ~10 gCO2/km) and setting ambitious targets, most manufacturers will start to be penalised in 2015. By then, European regulations will stipulate a maximum of 130 gCO2/km for 100% of manufacturer-fleets.

MSA Manufacturing Limited, the specialist core and laminate materials kit-cutting provider to the composites industry, is pleased to announce new capability and extended capacity. The firm is now able to kit-cut laminate materials, including dry laminates, pre-pregs and aramid materials, and hold pre-preg materials within new freezer storage. This complements MSA’s established ability to kit cut a wide variety of core materials, alloys, cured fibre-glass, G10 and carbon via 3 and 5 axis routers and waterjet.

SEARCH FOR TECHNOLOGY AND CAPABILITY ACROSS THE ENTIRE GROUP OF EVENTS Brand new feature for ALL 4 individual show websites is the integrated ‘by keyword’, ‘by sector’ and ‘by sub group capability’ exhibitor search facility, allowing visitors to survey across the landscape of ALL 480+ exhibiting companies (encompassing the FOUR co-locating shows) and locate relevant target companies and organisations. Go to any of the individual show websites and click on Exhibitor List – ALL SHOWS to begin searching!!

ENERGY ENGINEERS GIVE TANKER COMPANY FUEL FOR THOUGHT

Work carried out by Hallam Energy experts at Sheffield Hallam University has helped a Barnsley-based tanker manufacturer to potentially reduce a major supermarket’s fuel consumption by up to 10 per cent. Barnsley-based Road Tankers Northern (RTN) has developed a new tanker for Morrisons, which experts say has a lower carbon footprint and is more economical. Hallam Energy used drag analysis more often associated with Formula One teams to examine the aerodynamic performance of RTN’s iconic trailers - a short cab and a long cylindrical trailer.

New FMS systems from The L. S. Starrett Company take testing forward A new range of innovative testing systems from The L. S. Starrett Company feature a rigid, single column frame design with advanced motion control and with configurable speed rates from 0.02 to 1270mm/min. Four capacities are currently available: 500N, 1kN, 2.5kN and 5kN. FMS Series systems operate using the new Starrett L2 Series colour, touchscreen controller with L2 Series force measurement software. THREE BOND 1530 SERIES ELASTIC ADHESIVES Three Bond’s 1530 series products are one-part, solvent-free elastic adhesives whose main component is a silyl-based polymer which cures to form a toughened elastomer with time. There are no solvents or plasticisers contained in the adhesive, it shows excellent non-staining characteristics against all materials and is over paintable. It provides excellent weather resistance, high adhesion strength to an extensive range of materials without the need for primer pre-treatment, and is user-friendly due to its low odour and non-isocyanate chemistry.

Amber lightens all-electric motorbike The Brammo Empulse RR, is an all-electric race bike made by Oregonbased Brammo Inc. Using Amber’s prepreg technology to reduce weight and increase performance, they have won the TTXGP zero-emission motorbike race series two years in a row. “With Amber Composites prepreg, we shaved 30 percent off the weight of the assembly versus the previous design,” says Brian Wismann, Director of Product Development at Brammo. “As an added bonus, the surface finish was so straight out of the mould that we didn’t have to clear coat or paint it, saving further weight and production time.”
