Why should you leave your legacy to Beit Halochem? When you leave your legacy to Beit Halochem, you are giving new lives to the soldiers who sacrificed their old lives defending Israel. The four Beit Halochem Centres, in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa and Beer Sheva, provide the rehabilitation needed by the wounded veterans. The compassionate and expert staff bring hope every day to those who have lost so much. Owing to the generosity of our donors, Beit Halochem has transformed the lives of generations of brave men and women, repairing their bodies, healing their minds and enabling them to build their futures. Your legacy will mean we can continue to provide recreation centres, sports facilities, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, counselling and dozens of other specialised, vital and invaluable services. More than that, your legacy will mean that we can repay the courage and rebuild the lives of each soldier who thought their life was over.

Noam was one step from death. How did we help him reach the gold medal podium? Apache helicopter pilot Noam Gershony’s story almost ended in July 2006, when his helicopter crashed during the second Lebanon war. The impact left his co-pilot dead and Noam critically injured. An emergency airlift to the Rambam Medical Centre in Haifa saved his life, but Noam would never walk again. After four years of physical and emotional struggle, Noam found a way to live again. At the Beit Halochem Tel Aviv Centre, he rekindled his love of tennis, training regularly, with the dedication and focus he thought he’d left behind in the helicopter wreckage. Noam’s perseverance enabled him to eventually reach international level and, in 2012, the pilot who fell to earth found himself on top of the winner’s podium, accepting the gold medal at the London Paralympic Games. Your legacy will help soldiers like Noam embrace a rewarding and worthwhile future. 4

Noam Gershony Beit Halochem helped Noam make the journey from paralysed ex-helicopter pilot to Paralympic gold medallist. Only the generous donations and legacies from friends like you enabled us to fund the ÂŁ30,000 it took to help Noam.

Einat Malka The donations we received meant Beit Halochem could help Einat in her battle from despair to aspiring triathlete. It takes ÂŁ40,000 to give disabled soldiers like Einat the resources they need to embrace their future.

Einat had lost the will to live. How did we help her rediscover the will to win? Einat Malka epitomised health, energy and fitness. She was the Israeli Karate Youth Champion and, in the IDF, served as a fitness instructor for the Elite Combat Unit. Then, in 1997, during a training run, her life changed forever. A sudden injury permanently paralysed Einat’s right leg. She could no longer do the things that gave her life meaning. Even walking was a battle. For ten years Einat fought depression and despair; fought to be a mother to her active baby; fought to get through every day. Einat’s answer was to lose so she could win. When doctors advised amputating her dead limb, Einat agreed. From that day forward, she began to reclaim her life, with hours of rehabilitation, retraining and readjustment at the Beit Halochem Centre in Beer Sheva. Now Einat epitomises an indomitable spirit that enabled her to complete her first triathlon. Your legacy will mean we can lift injured soldiers like Einat out of the depths of depression and help them take control of their own future.

Izzy lost his left arm in battle. How did we help him to rebuild his life? Izzy Ezagui’s war ended on the border with Gaza during Operation Cast Lead. A direct hit from sustained enemy fire left the members of his unit seriously injured - and tore off Izzy’s left arm. Somehow, despite the pain, Izzy walked to the nearest IDF shelter, where medics began urgent life-saving treatment. During the next 48 hours he courageously endured two more vital operations. Then came the real challenge: life as a disabled veteran. The specialised rehabilitation programmes at the Beit Halochem Centre in Tel Aviv helped Izzy to gradually come to terms with the emotional issues and physical realities of his injury. Izzy sacrificed much in Israel’s defence but, despite being discharged from his unit with honours, he would volunteer to serve again. Izzy loves his country and wants nothing more than to protect it. Your legacy will help us to repay soldiers like Izzy 8

for the sacrifices they have made – and help them to build a brighter future.

Izzy Ezagui Beit Halochem provided the physical and emotional support Izzy needed to adjust to life as a disabled veteran. Generous donations and legacies funded the ÂŁ20,000 it takes to help soldiers like Izzy find a way to begin again.
