One final promotion push before May, and gambling in print here; yes we are flying high into the Championship league. OK, I know I am guilty of forever talking the instant part of the print industry up, but this time I was hyping on about my beloved Brighton and Hove Albion. Ha! Wouldn’t it be great though if we could all arrange an early summer promotion. There is a print parallel here as a planned promotion starts with design, a confident production line team, and of course add some quality finishing. If in doubt ask Gus Poyet! Other shows to look forward to this month are Sign and Digital, Birmingham NEC, details page 2 and news throughout this magazine. Royal wedding on the 29th. Northprint next month. Have a happy Easter. Peter, predicting promotion, Foulkes

Mimaki to show new JFXplus and JV34-260 at FESPA Digital
Mimaki will showcase a substantial portion of its portfolio of printers and cutters at FESPA Digital Hamburg (Hall A4, Stand D20), including the recently launched JV34-260 super wide format printer and JFX-1631plus grand format UV flatbed printer. Mimaki will present a set of technologically innovative solutions that enable print companies to expand their business opportunities in the sign, graphics, textile and industrial markets. An extensive portfolio of UV curing, outdoor durable and dye sublimation inkjet printers, as well as roll and flatbed cutting machines, will be demonstrating Mimaki’s innovative approach and engineering precision. The brand new JV34-260, available from April, will be showcased in Hamburg, promoting its high quality printing capabilities and productive speeds. Compared to its predecessor, the JV34-260 prints 70% faster and is equipped with the very latest print head technology. At an accessible price and low total cost of ownership, the JV34-260 is ideal for print companies who would like to expand into the super wide segment, while still having the flexibility of printing smaller signage as well. In the near future the JV34-260 will also be available as dye sublimation paper transfer model for producing various types of soft signage. The new Mimaki JFX-1631plus UV flatbed printer is another of the two recent innovations on the stand. In comparison with its predecessor, the JFXplus can output an 80% faster maximum speed, of up to 23.6 m2/h. This dramatic increase is the result of an additional post curing unit that cures the print after it has initially been cured by the LEDs
on the head carriage. The enhanced productivity comes on top of the high print precision for which the JFX is already known in the market. In addition to the two launches, visitors can experience Mimaki’s revolutionary UJF-3042 compact tabletop UV LED printer, now also capable of printing special effects, such as shiny drops of water, with the newly developed clear varnish. The machine’s versatility, affordability and excellent print quality has made this printer an irresistible solution for companies in search of short run production and variable data printing of different small objects and products. Not only small signs, badges and promotional products can be considered as attractive print applications, but also promising business opportunities lie in markets for covers of electronic products (mobile phones) and packaging (mock-ups). Mimaki will also demonstrate beautiful silver
and golden metallic effects on various labels and signage with its eco solvent silver ink (ES3). The arrival of metallic ink has greatly increased the possibilities for print companies to add creative value to their products with the versatile CJV30 and JV33 printers. Last but not least, textile professionals amongst the visitors can expect an appealing overview of Mimaki´s solutions for digital printing for soft signage and apparel. Direct and transfer sublimation printers, such as the new highly productive TX400-1800D and super wide format JV5-320DS, will show that high speed printing and impressive print quality can go hand in hand. www.hybridservices.co.uk
Roland DG reports no disruption at its Japanese manufacturing facility Following the unprecedented events in Japan which started on Friday, 11 March, Roland DG (UK) is confirming that its facilities in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, are unaffected by the effects of the earthquake and tsunami which have hit the north east of the country. Production, design and administrative offices at the company’s international headquarters are all working as normal, and no disruption is anticipated to manufacturing or delivery schedules. With its roots in Japan, and continuing strong associations with the country on a day to day basis, Roland DG (UK) offers its sincere condolences to all those individuals and businesses affected adversely as a result of the disaster. The core development and manufacturing of all Roland equipment is based in Hamamatsu, a city located in the east and famous for its industrial connections to the musical instrument and motorcycle sectors as well to display and sign making technologies. “Everyone involved with Roland in the UK has been devastated by the tragic events that have
unfolded in Japan, and we are all hoping for the nation’s swift recovery,” states Jerry Davies, Managing Director of Roland DG (UK). “We are able to confirm that the Hamamatsu factory and offices have not been disrupted and that production and deliveries are continuing. “The welfare of our employees is of paramount importance wherever they are in the world, and it is Roland’s philosophy to ensure that safety comes first in our manufacturing facilities,” Davies continues. “Roland DG’s new international headquarters and production plant were opened
in 2006 and reflect this strict policy. The facility has been designed and built to comply with the most stringent seismic regulations to ensure optimum protection should an earthquake occur in the Hamamatsu region.” Almost all of Roland DG’s sign making, display production, engraving and rapid prototyping products are developed and manufactured in its Hamamatsu facility. From this Japanese base, which adheres to the highest quality control standards, the company’s equipment is distributed around the world.

Up close and personal – Xeretec Xcel onE of the UK’s largest digital print equipment and solutions providers, Xeretec, has developed Xcel, a powerful cross media solution which uses variable data publishing, web to print and workflow to deliver truly innovative campaigns. For the print and graphic communications industry, Xcel is a mechanism for unearthing new opportunities from existing customers and the means of reaching out to a whole new target audience. By utilising cross media, marketers and creatives are now able to combine variable print, email, pURLs (personalised URLs) and SMS touch points to create highly effective, response driven marketing campaigns, without the need to invest in expensive software or additional technical personnel. “Xcel is not just about significantly increasing response rates; it is also about the invaluable customer insight it provides, which is impossible to get from standard direct marketing campaigns” states Warren Beard, Director of Xeretec. The aim of Xcel is to deliver a unique web‐based marketing portal including email, direct mail and eventually cross media from one login. “Typically, these formats ‐ although widely used ‐ have all been fairly disparate as interaction and
utilisation is delivered via completely separate systems” continues Beard, “Single point campaigns often include a mixture of these resources, there for the practicalities: for the user to be able to use a single point solution is not only necessary, but unrivalled within our technology”. Variable Data Publishing (VDP) is not just a passing phase; it is the cornerstone of not only Xcel but cross-media marketing as a discipline. VDP involves taking static content to provide personalised and relevant user context. Additional information such as consumer historical buying activity and product interest are just a couple of areas where information can be used to tailor images. These could include the recipient’s name carved into an image of a tree or spelled out in the clouds. Furthermore, the use of personalised URL’s such as email, SMS text messages and unique online landing pages can all be used to compliment a cross‐media, variable‐print document campaign. Essentially, VDP is driven by a deep marketing need to connect with a business market and Xcel has provided the mechanism to do it. The marketing potential of variable data printing and Xcel is enormous: it enables mass customisation of documents via digital print technology ‐ as opposed
to the ‘mass‐production’ of a single document using offset lithography. In essence, instead of producing 10,000 copies of a single document, delivering a single message to 10,000 customers, variable data printing could print 10,000 unique documents with a customised message, delivered on an individual basis. A key ingredient to cross media marketing and communication is workflow; workflow is about the actual process, the unique creative process management requirement that streamlines print production. Workflow goes beyond being able to implement marketing approval cycles and takes into account areas such as colour management and proofing controls so that publishers can create production‐ready files in PDF, PDF/X‐1a, PDF/X‐3, DCS2 and PostScript formats. Web to print (W2P) is very rarely an out of the box solution and more often it can mean something different to everyone. With Xcel, it is not only a key enabler for print but also for marketing, as it diversifies how service providers communicate and deliver their services, enables providers to conduct business more efficiently and creates a wealth of opportunity for value added services such as ecommerce, collaboration, sales management, and customer service. Both consumer and business
Warren Beard, Director of Xeretec
users expect to have the option to conduct business using the Internet and this expectation has continued to drive the adoption of W2P solutions. Those that have deployed W2P agree that it plays a vital role in improving customer service, expanding geographic reach and enabling revenue growth. In addition, those that have adopted W2P say that it has streamlined their operations through such features as automated estimating, job templates, automated file generation ‐ and of course the e‐commerce option. Cross media marketing, Variable Data Publishing and W2P is about having the control to increase sales, acquire leads and secure customer loyalty through the production of marketing campaigns that offer the flexibility to utilise customer data in an intelligent way. www.xeretec.co.uk/services/ xeretec-xcel

CrawlEy based Providence Print Solutions have invested in a new Duplo System 5000 bookletmaker to enable them to ‘fully automate’ their booklet making process. Originally based in Dorking for over 20 years, the commercial print company has been in their new Crawley premises since January 2010, coinciding with the install of an iGen 4 digital press from Xerox. Since this time they have been undertaking an overhaul of processes to become more automated and more efficient to help improve turnaround times to their customers. Geoff Ovenden, Work Manager explains further. “Until the purchase of the iGen 4 digital press, we had been finishing books on a Muller line. With the set-up times and skill required to get the machine going, all the benefit of short run digital was going out the window. I was having to print off 300 copies to get 200 copies finished; taking a lot of the profit out of shorter run jobs.” The Duplo System 5000 bookletmaker was installed toward the end of 2010, with nearly 100,000 books being finished per month, an extremely high level usage so early on. “It has made a world of difference,” enthuses Geoff. “There are no tools required to set-up, my operators find the machine extremely intuitive, it doesn’t take up a lot of room and most importantly jobs are being turned around that much quicker. We researched the market and we found that the Duplo was the only real fully automatic bookletmaker available on the market, the rest were nearer semi automatic.” The Duplo System 5000 bookletmaker at Providence consists of two DC-10/60Pro 10 bin suction collator towers, DBM-500 stitch and fold bookletmaker and DBM-500T fore edge trimmer. It runs up to 5,000 booklets per hour and features tool less fully automatic set up and change over between jobs. Previous to the Duplo being installed, work was being batched up according to size, with A3 to A4, A4 to A5 and smaller format booklets for example, being queued so that many of the same format job could be run after one another. “This ultimately meant that in some instances a print job was being queued until later in the day before it was finished. It was all to do with the amount of time it took to change settings between jobs. Now with the fully automatic Duplo line, jobs can be changed with the touch of a button.” www.duplouk.com

SELL-OUT FESPA DIGITAL 2011
5000 visitors already registered for Europe’s largest ever digital wide format print event FESPa Digital 2011 is fully sold out, with all 18,000m2 of available exhibition space allocated to around 370 exhibitors, and a waiting list of would be exhibitors. The size and scope of this year’s event make it an even more comprehensive showcase of wide format printing than the three dedicated digital halls at last year’s main FESPA exhibition in Munich, adding up to the largest focused digital wide-format printing event ever to take place in Europe. Printers across Europe have been enthusiastically pre-registering for the event via the event website at www. fespadigital.com, with close to 5000 individuals registered so far, and 50 new registrations received every day since the beginning of March 2011. This year’s show is the fourth in the Digital series which was hosted in Amsterdam in 2006 and 2009, and in Geneva in 2008. Managing director of FESPA events Frazer Chesterman observes, “When we last staged FESPA Digital in 2009, our industry was in the throes of a deep recession, yet the show still attracted 9,682 digital print ‘Revolutionaries’. Times change, our community is forging ahead with increasing optimism, and the talk now is of ‘Evolution’, which we at FESPA define as ‘growth through adaptation’. At this year’s event, we’ll be concentrating on the characteristics that print service providers need to adopt in order to survive and thrive in this changed business landscape.” He continues: “There are plentiful examples of that Evolution in the digital marketplace, of printers who are achieving continued and renewed success with new technologies,
innovative materials, more efficient workflows, creative products, different business models or go-to-market plans. FESPA Digital 2011 will share their best-practice examples, and the combination of supplier exhibits and educational elements is designed to motivate other printers to follow their lead.”
EXPanDED Show – EXTra Day, MorE ViSiTor ConTEnT FESPA Digital 2011 has been extended from the traditional three days to four, giving exhibitors additional scope to engage in meaningful discussions with serious buyers, and enabling FESPA to set aside time on the final day to offer The Big Idea, a programme of content specifically targeted towards creative decision makers from agencies and corporate marketing departments who are looking at how they can integrate wide format print into their marketing mix to maximise impact and boost response levels from target audiences. For the first three days of the show, Digital 2011 visitors will also have access to FESPA Fabric, the campus style satellite event concentrating on garment printing and promotional wear, with exhibits of hardware and materials for screen and digital printing, embroidery, embellishment and garment finishing. The event features the Fabric Live! Fashion Show, hands on t-shirt printing workshops in Charlie’s Corner, an educational conference moderated by textile printing expert Scott Fresener, and the Apparel Store, a new, contemporary, retail style showcase of quality preprint garments from a line-up of
industry-leading suppliers. As in previous years, the make up of FESPA Digital clearly reflects the prevailing industry trends. Alongside the many expected innovations in digital output, visitors can expect to see significant developments in software and workflow automation, meaningful advancements in finishing and mounting, and the widest ever selection of substrates optimised for digital print. The reviving interest in environmentally sustainable print will also be a dominant theme, with the majority of exhibitors sharing solutions that reflect this growing concern among buyers of wide format print products, following the clear price orientation of the recession years. Following closely on the contest at the recent FESPA Americas event, the world tour of the show stopping FESPA Wrap Cup Masters continues in Hamburg, to be followed in Asia in October this year. The winner from Hamburg (and from next year’s FESPA Digital show in Barcelona, Spain) will join the winners from other regions at a grand finale at FESPA 2013 in London. Frazer Chesterman concludes; “Ours is a dynamic industry, with print service providers constantly reshaping their offering to respond to shifts in customer demand, and developing new niche applications and specialisations. Great digital wide format print never ceases to be exciting and inspirational. Big Print Plan – First Pay As you Go for LFP VElMEX Distribution the Canon large format distributor recently launched ‘The Big Print Plan’ a large format rental plan that offers customers hassle free ownership, billed monthly with no large upfront investment. The ‘Big Print Plan’ has been designed to provide a fully supported printing solution billed monthly. Similar to the click charge system used by photocopiers, the customer will pay a monthly fee for the rental of the printer, support and fully comprehensive machine cover. The cover includes all parts, labour and replacement printheads. There is no capital outlay; the customer simply pays a monthly fee based on their chosen printer. The ink usage is measured by diagnostic software which communicates directly with the printer reporting back the ink levels. There is no minimum billing; customers will only pay for the ink they have used. Velmex ships replacement ink tanks for a next day delivery when the
ink levels are low. Servicing is arranged remotely by the same diagnostics software that measures the ink. This also allows the Velmex support team the ability to interrogate the printer if support is required. “This is a whole new concept for large format users” says Mark Keeley, MD. Velmex Distribution, “It is a normal process in the copier industry but the Big Print Plan is the first pay as you go rental in our market, it provides an affordable printing solution for many customers trying to make the move to large format.” The plan has been successful so far with the copy shop market and experienced large format users. It also appeals to those customers who want to limit large up front investment and those who need continued after sales support. The Big Print Plan will only be available through Velmex’s authorised Canon resellers. www.velmex.co.uk or email info@velmex.co.uk or to view the Big Print Plan website go to www.bigprintplan.co.uk or email enquires@ bigprintplan.co.uk
ROLAND VERSACAMM VS DELIVERS MORE ThE versatility of Roland’s latest VersaCAMM combination print and cut machines has resulted in an upsurge in end users who benefit from more than its metallic and white ink capabilities. The company reports that recent sales have included growing numbers of customers who want to take advantage of this versatile system’s dual CMYK options as well as the alternative version which accommodates a six colour palette with the additions of light cyan and light magenta. Although the VersaCAMM VS series was the first machine designed from the ground up to incorporate metallic and white eco-solvent based inks, Roland decided to include other options for its users who need highly accurate standard CMYK output combined with precision contour cutting. The overall speed of producing fine standards of four colour work across a broad range of roll fed materials is complemented by the machine’s ability to cut to exacting tolerances so that even the smallest labels and decals can be manufactured. Available in a choice of four widths, with the largest size being a generous 1.62m, the new generation printhead incorporated into the VersaCAMM VS family has been designed and configured to generate the finest accurate results. Precision rounded nozzles in this head combine with accurate ink firing, with seven sizes of variable droplet enabling smooth graduations, flawless solid colours and crisp, clear text. This print accuracy is achievable because of the head’s arrangement of colours, with a mirrored array ensuring there is no difference in the firing order of the inks. This nozzle arrangement means that the same sequence of lay down is accomplished in both directions so that it produces bi-directional output with no trace of banding or striping. This is particularly evident in the dual CMYK option of the VersaCAMM VS series, with high productivity and excellent output quality resulting from the inks’ configuration within the printhead. Aligned as MYCKKCYM, instead of duplicated CMYK in the same order, bi-directional production is smooth and seamless and, with the magenta and yellow inks being situated on the outside of the head, critical red shades are brighter and more accurate. Users of the dual CMYK model of the VersaCAMM VS have also reported that they can work in the lowest production mode for most jobs with superlative quality and fast throughput speeds. Choosing print options is quick and easy using the machine’s integrated menu settings, with simple
settings for bi-directional set up able to be stored for quick recall when needed. Another major benefit which applies to all versions of the VersaCAMM VS lies in its contour cutting capabilities. Vital that precision alignment is maintained, even across the optimum width on long rolls of material, all machines in this series are able to work to the most exacting tolerances on print-and-cut jobs. This cutting accuracy is essential for all sizes of application, and is particularly relevant for users producing step and repeat and nested small items, such as labels, decals and stickers. For these, and other applications where tolerances are critical to the finished job, the VersaCAMM VS’s ability to work to exacting precision is proving to be another major benefit to the machine’s versatility. Roland’s VersaCAMM VS series incorporates the company’s renowned EcoSol Max inks whose durability can be enhanced with over lamination for additional protection, such as for vehicle wraps, liveries and exterior signs. Easy to set up and operate, this versatile print and cut solution is available in four sizes, with the VS-640 sporting a generous width of 1.62m, the VS-540 able to handle materials up to 1.37m wide, the mid-sized VS-420 offering 1.07m and the compact VS-300 measuring 762mm. New 2.6m wide JV34 printer from Mimaki
Mimaki’s exclusive distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd, is pleased to announce the newest addition to its award winning portfolio of large format printers; the JV34-260. Based on the award winning JV33 series, the new model features a print width of 2.6m and achieves significantly faster speeds resulting in higher productivity while at the same time appealing to cost conscious print service providers. The JV34-260 is available from April 2011. Mimaki’s new JV34-260 is not only one of the most productive wide format printers in its class, it also comes at a very competitive price. The JV34-260’s high throughput of up to 30 m2/h alongside a host of further standard features allow print service providers to cost-effectively produce outstanding graphics and images using Mimaki’s proven RIP software that is included in the package. The sign and graphics market is characterised by different requirements for indoor or outdoor applications. Mimaki’s new JV34 series covers all of these and more. Be it banners, flags or other substrates, the new super wide inkjet machine enables printers to produce outstanding results with outdoor durable or sublimation inks on a wide variety of materials including polyester – while at the same time streamlining workflows. The JV34-260 incorporates two newly developed print heads in a staggered arrangement, resulting in a print speed of around 30 m2/h (at 540 x 720 dpi). Further productivity improvements are gained through the implementation of a range of Mimaki functionalities that enable largely unattended production, freeing personnel and workload for other tasks. Mimaki’s Automatic Media Feeder provides continuous web tension over the whole width of the substrate enabling impressive image quality, even on long jobs. As standard, the Mimaki AMF supports a maximum roll weight of 100 kg. The JV34-260 features Mimaki’s UISS (Uninterrupted Ink Supply System) which delivers continuous ink supply for long print jobs. As soon as one ink cartridge is empty, the system automatically detects this and will start supplying ink from another cartridge of the same colour. In combination with the optional MBIS (Mimaki Bulk Ink System), comprising of ink contained within two litre sacks; significant cost savings and environmental benefits can be achieved. Three variable dot sizes enable accurate and high quality images with smooth gradations even when printing in four colour mode. A three stage intelligent heater before, during and after printing ensures fast drying times, as the preheater warms the substrate before printing while the automatic drying fan dries the ink even at high speeds so that the media can be taken up directly after printing. A print head height of 2 to 3 mm can be adjusted easily according to substrate and for prints with sublimation inks, print head height can be adjusted according to the thickness of transfer paper between 3 and 4 mm. This combination of a feature rich printer at a competitive price is something that Hybrid’s national sales manager, John de la Roche is confident will appeal to print providers looking to increase their capacity. “The Mimaki JV34-260 makes a sound investment,” he says. “The proven platform coupled with Mimaki’s production printing know how ensures print providers will benefit from the increase in capacity and quality that the JV34 can deliver.” Available from late Spring, further details on the JV34-260 can be gained by contacting Mimaki’s exclusive distributor for the UK & Ireland, Hybrid Services Ltd on 01270 501900 www.hybridservices.co.uk

CANON ENTERS PRODUCTION PHOTO PRINTING MARKET
Canon has announced the company’s European entry into the production photo printing market, with the launch of the DreamLabo 5000 production inkjet printer. In line with the company’s stated growth strategy of expanding business operations through diversification, the DreamLabo 5000 marks Canon’s first entry in the production photo printing market. Delivering a new standard of combined photo and text quality together with high productivity, the device offers the production photo printing market a viable alternative to silver halide technology that will revitalise the photo printing market. In addition, through opportunities possible from premium quality, it offers both the production photo and the small batch premium print on demand (POD) markets substantial new revenue opportunities. Ryoichi Bamba, President and CEO, Canon Europe, Middle East and Africa, comments: “This launch signifies a new business direction for Canon as we are proud to announce not just a new machine, but the technology that can revitalise the entire industry and open up substantial new business opportunities. With the DreamLabo 5000, Canon is setting a new standard for the production printing of high quality photos and high definition text.” Leveraging and extending Canon’s existing inkjet technology, which it has successfully deployed through its PIXMA desktop printers
and imagePROGRAF wide format range, the DreamLabo 5000 features a newly developed high density print head, enabling 305 mm wide printing output. Incorporating Canon’s FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology, the print head enables the printing of high quality photos and detailed text to support a variety of high value added output, from premium photo albums, photo books, photo calendars, photo collages and other merchandise to high quality POD items, such as bespoke brochures. The wide print head delivers high speed one pass printing, requiring only a single pass of the printing paper while the print head remains in a fixed position. When used in combination with the automatic double sided printing function, the DreamLabo 5000 is capable of printing the contents of a 20-page A4 size photo album in just 72* seconds and the printing of 40 photo prints (102 x 152mm) in one minute. The system also realises high productivity by enabling paper and ink tank replacement during printing, supporting the extended operation times required for production printers. DreamLabo 5000 uses a seven colour dye based ink system that delivers smooth gradation. Employing image processing technology that makes use of the full range of Canon’s unique inkjet printing colour gamut, the new printer enables the output of photo images with a level of colour representation superior to that of conventional silver halide photographs. The DreamLabo 5000 will be available from Canon across Europe from early 2012. * This product is intended for print use only. For photo album and POD production, a book binding process requiring other equipment would be necessary. www.canon.co.uk
Creative new clear ink added to Mimaki’s UV range
Exclusive UK and Ireland distributor for Mimaki, Hybrid Services Ltd, announces that clear ink has been added to Mimaki’s LH-100 hard UV ink for the award winning UJF-3042, JFX and JFXplus series of UV LED curable inkjet printers. The clear ink will be available from March. The new clear ink enables glossy and matte finish effects, adding creativity and value to the final product. These finishes provide an effect close to that achieved traditionally with a spot varnish which has been actively used in the printing industry for many years. In addition to this, the Mimaki clear ink can be output in multiple layers so that prints not only look more enticing, but also, a strong desire to touch the image is created. National sales manager for Hybrid, John de la Roche considers the clear ink to be a valuable addition to the product range. “Mimaki remains at the forefront of digital ink developments and the new clear LED UV ink gives new and existing customers great creative opportunity to fully exploit the high print quality and commercial potential of Mimaki’s latest generation flatbed UV printers.” Applications such as high end point of sale, labels, textured finishes and even braille are possible with the new clear ink, so for companies involved in packaging proofing it opens up new possibilities for rapidly creating an accurate simulation of a finished product. With the cured UV ink becoming touch dry immediately after it has been printed, the overprint process to create a textured effect is rapid and impressive in its outcome. Mimaki’s clear UV ink can be retro fitted to their JFX and JFXplus range of flatbed machines and only requires a minor hardware upgrade when used with their UJF-3042 desktop A3 flatbed. Users should ensure they have the latest firmware and version of Mimaki’s RIP – both of which are downloads available via Hybrid’s website. For further information, contact Hybrid on 01270 501900 or visit www.hybridservices.co.uk.

UEL’s Cutting Edge ThE University of East London has revitalised their Print Centre with the latest print and finishing technology from Xerox and Duplo and hope this will make them ‘One of the most cutting edge printing facilities in Higher Education in the UK’.. Their Docklands Campus facility, which was formed in 2006 as a consolidation of three former print centres at their Barking, Stratford and Docklands sites, works in 5 year technology updates and Steve Marlow, Head of Print Services, explains the brief for the current cycle of changes. “We wanted to increase our production efficiency and offer a broader service and product spectrum to our customers. Our brief for the printing side was primarily focussed on workflow speeds, improvement in print quality and creating cost efficiencies. With the finishing side it was more about finding improvements in automation and intelligence, we were keen to introduce variable data printing in-house as well.” In December 2010 the Print Centre went through a process of full regeneration, including a new Xerox Colour 1000 Press, two Xerox Nuvera 144 EA Production Systems, a Xerox 700 digital colour press, wide format printing plus a Digital System 5000ProSCC bookletmaking line from Duplo. The Duplo modular system includes a DSF-5000 intelligent sheet feeder with barcode reader for variable print, plus an antistatic feeding feature. The sheets then enter the SCC-PRO inline top and tail slitter and creaser, which in turn feeds the set into Duplo’s DBM-500/T bookletmaker and foreedge trimmer. The books are then finished with an ASM-500 squareback device. “At IPEX we were actively seeking a bookletmaker that suited our new print production model. We were impressed with the build quality and modularity of the Duplo system and we felt the line could be tailored for our needs. We were particularly impressed with the squareback finish,
traditionally higher education printed prospectuses and booklets can be quite thick, so the inline spine square along with the SCC crease has made a massive difference to the quality of our books,” comments Steve. The university offers a vast array of different course programmes, from architecture to media to teaching, and with this there is demand for large amounts of different types of print work passing through the Print Centre every day. This requirement to become more reactive, flexible and efficient was a major driver in the upgrade of equipment. “We find the Duplo system very intuitive to setup with the PC front end, and the fact that you can pull up pre-programmed jobs that configure automatically without the need for tools is a major factor. Previously we had to change set-up
between jobs with socket sets and spanners, as far as labour is concerned that is dead time, now the Duplo changes at the touch of a button,” says Bob Ellis, Principal Finisher. “Now we have this cutting edge technology in place, we are looking at even more targeted marketing for the university with the use of variable data print. We have a mini prospectus project that we are developing, which we can run two-up on a digital sheet and stitch on the Duplo using the front barcode readers to ensure complete integrity with each book. We are also looking at QR codes as a form of marketing. These kinds of projects are now the future for this print facility, and we believe that we can drive the university forward with this new investment in production equipment,” concludes Steve. www.uel.ac.uk & www.duplouk.com
Anything is possible for Clarity MD Managing Director of Clarity Software Richard Gamlin has set himself a new target to hit at the end of March. He’s taking on The Alps and its 114 mile, five day Haute Route between the two historic mountain centres of Chamonix and Zermatt, covering up to 14,000m of ascent and descent in the process. This will be one of the toughest challenges he has ever faced, calling upon skiing and mountaineering techniques to negotiate through multiple snow conditions, ascend cliff faces on crampons and descend into the abyss on abseil. The physically demanding experience will mean an almost military level of fitness is required to get through the five days, and Richard has been training hard. He is expecting to shed up to an
astonishing 6,000 calories per day around the 4,000m high peaks. “Over the last few weeks I have been road cycling up to 50 miles at a time with a backpack to get my heart rate up as high as possible,” he
said. “My lung capacity will be severely tested up there, so I’m pushing myself beyond any limit I’ve previously managed to attain. I think I’m ready, but there’s only one way to find out.” www.claritypro.com

A bit of a reality check
Technology enables the average consumer to extend possibilities in the virtual digital world but hard print is where reality checks in. Martin Christie writes…
E
ven as I write this column a customer arrives with an image on a memory stick he would like enlarged to A1, but even a brief scan of the files as details rather than thumbmnails shows that of the several hundreds, not one is more than a megabyte in size, or in real terms about a hundredth of the size ideal for printing. But we don’t work in an ideal world. In print on demand we have to work with what the customer wants and is able to provide. Besides, turning away a potential pay job is never very satisfying. I always advise that a digital file will probably enlarge four times its original, but that it does depend on the quality of the image itself, and the appearance that is acceptable to the viewer. Images that come directly from a modern digital camera are usually no problem. Even quite ordinary compact cameras are capable of producing stunning images, as the result of improvements in capture and processing. The problem generally comes from those that have been downloaded and manipulated by editing software. Although, as mentioned in a previous column, Photoshop is used generally as a description of this process, it is not always Adobe’s flagship that has done the work. Apart from other professional products, several freeware applications are now widely in public use, including those available on line. Inevitably anything that makes a process more convenient is likely to be at the expense of quality which is not necessarily an issue for pictures shared on social network websites, but will be if the images are expected to be printed in the real world. You can forgive the average customer having a limited understanding of the technology, and its implications, especially if they are prepared to listen to what is after all, professional advice. Increasingly however, there is the growth of the semi-expert, after a few years

familiarity with computers, a belief that the art has been mastered, the complications understood. Unfortunately, the computer, and all digital equipment that has its own innate intelligence, is not a device like a car, for example, which once the controls are understood, can be half capably driven. It’s like expecting to enter a Formula One Grand Prix the day after you pass a driving test. More like driving, you never stop learning. Many of those who call themselves designers have little or no knowledge of print, certainly many graphic design students seem to be expected to use programmes with very little training in how to use them properly, especially when it comes to output. I was recently stunned by a photography student, apparently submitting his MA project. He arrived with his laptop and a load of prints done by another well-known national chain, complaining bitterly about the quality, and poor accuracy in colour matching. I always like a challenge so I took the bait. It took me a little while to realise this was a big mistake, and

I had seriously over estimated his digital knowledge base. I accepted the first query as to why his file looked so different on my screen, freshly calibrated that morning, as a opposed to his rather well travelled and much abused laptop – they don’t teach people to look after kit anymore, just complain when it’s broken! It was when he asked me quite seriously what calibration was I began to lose some enthusiasm for the project. This was, after all, a supposedly trained modern photographer, not any old body off the street. I can understand there is a traditional desire to work with conventional film, but equipping a new photographer hoping to ply his trade in the 21st century without the basics of digital is a criminal waste of talent. I know several good photographers still using film. But even their negatives and transparencies have to be turned into digital information at some stage, in order to output to print. Shooting film for a website, for example, makes no sense at all. Most importantly, understanding the differences between images backlit on a monitor screen and presented in hard copy ink on paper is essential. You no longer have to be a boffin to do this. There are several practical aids that can help. Most importantly in a world where people seem less able to question technology, waving a digital wand at them will probably save you a thousand words. Monitor calibration is no longer a minor issue. You don’t need to delve into all the mysteries of colour profiling, but you need to able to match at least reasonably, what you see on the screen and what you are able to print. Otherwise the customer will rightly be a little sceptical of any technical explanation in mere words. Colour Confidence are one of the leaders in colour management as the name suggests, and we got hold of one of their starter packages as a basic but practical tool for the digital print shop. If you are running a hi-tech studio, the chances are you

will go for more expensive kit, but then you will also be likely to be running more expensive monitors and controlled lighting. The print shop environment is much more likely to be a compromise, hence you need things that are adaptable and easy to use. The Colour Confidence Studio XR2 is a complete monitor calibration and colour management solution in a box The i1Display 2 is an award winning monitor calibration system suitable for profiling LCD, laptop and CRT displays. Basically it’s a magic eye you should use to sort your monitor’s colour balance on a regular basis – then you can use it on multiple monitors once the software is installed. The programme will store profiles, and remind you at intervals of no more than a month, that calibration needs to be done again. This only takes a few minutes, plugging in the device and letting it run, Then you can tell customers with confidence that what you see on the screen is what they have given you, not what they think they have supplied. There are a couple of other useful goodies in the same box. The Kodak Colour Management Check Up Kit Comprises of a set of seven photographic prints and a CD containing the original files. Simply compare the prints to the on-screen view and verify that your monitor is colour correct, then print the files to check the accuracy of your printer. This is primarily geared to the minilab market, but it is a handy little guide nevertheless because at least it gives you a yardstick to compare. Then there is a Total Balance grey card. Setting the colour balance correctly is vital for accurate colour in digital cameras. Most people don’t bother and leave the setting on automatic, or use any of the presets available. But many cameras are now able to set a custom balance manually to suit conditions perfectly. A card with 18 percent grey enables the processor in the camera to set the light scale more accurately under the source provided. Colour management, as well
as all the inevitable selection of cameras and lenses, was very much to the fore at the annual Focus on Imaging exhibition at the NEC at the beginning of March, drawing nearly 30,000 photographers, be it professional or enthusiastic amateurs. The Expo has seen a massive resurgence in the industry, having grasped digital to its heart, so it was no surprise that many exhibits which would previously been seen only at a trade print show, were available to the general, if discerning public. Framing, and finishing along
with medium and large format printing are now all part of the photographer’s domain. Photo Books were very much in evidence on several stands. And as mentioned recently, other software companies, especially Corel, were making big inroads into the market previously dominated by Adobe. It’s a moving platform as the digital experience moves on, and the digital print shop needs to keep pace with it or be overtaken by its very customers.

Green Graphics leads the eco-friendly print evolution by example in the long term, how sustainable is a business or industry based on eco-unfriendly products? New Clarity Software user Green Graphics has certainly formulated its own opinion. It’s built an innovative company on eco products that sets an enviable benchmark for its sign and digital print competitors. According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the UK’s total carbon emissions for all consumed and imported products have increased by a massive 19% since 1990. DEFRA is urging businesses to reduce their impact on the environment by becoming eco-conscious in their design, materials use, packaging, delivery, marketing, disposal and reuse strategies. The Green Graphics’ business concept was a simple one: wherever possible use recycled, recyclable and reusable product materials to produce stunning large format print and display solutions. And then actually do it. Using advanced technologies to create a sandwich of materials with a central eco core veneered by a thin, rudimentary layer, Green Graphics’ displays are as sturdy as any other. They suffer no loss of WOW! factor capability on creative design. They have not compromised their ability to complete jobs, and they are at no competitive disadvantage to deliver projects within the expected timescales demanded in this fast paced digital print age, but the environmental benefits are exceptional and the message to their customers is impressive, and in many cases unbeatable.
We all know how much effort we should be putting in to going green, but in reality the jury is out on whether we are actually implementing a strategy of significance. In business, it seems the decision to switch to a green model is hugely desirable for many companies, particularly the corporates, but often falls at the penultimate hurdle. Maybe it’s a concept just too far out of the comfort zone for business leaders and owners who need to know their forecasts are as good as guaranteed at this difficult economic time. But try washing that excuse with Green Graphics, who has embraced the profitable opportunities it presents and spearheaded its marketing strategy with it. Crawley Council is just one of many customers who has commissioned Green Graphics to produce eco-friendly signs and displays. Used to educate the public on how to reduce their carbon footprint, the poster sized graphics were
installed around the local park and exhibited how easy it is to adopt eco strategies within the community. With a product range in place that industry rivals could only wish for, it was essential for Green Graphics to complement its eco USP with excellent customer service. Finding a software solution to support their growth was at the top of their list to complete their compelling sales proposition, and Clarity Professional was selected as the right MIS system to manage and drive their business processes. “Clarity Professional was the most complete all in one solution we found,” Business Development Manager Ashley Moscrop explains. “It gives us the ability to cost and quote complex jobs in a matter of minutes, and produce precise reports on our completed projects to analyse profit margins and customer service levels.” “Since installing Clarity, all our internal and external communications have improved and our planning for stock and labour resources is significantly more accurate” Ashley concludes. One thing is sure, Green Graphics has proven that eco-commerce is achievable through commitment, persistence and determination. Is it really that difficult to achieve? Incorporating a green strategy will give you a powerful USP that nobody can argue against, or take away from you. And don’t forget, your story will look great on anyone’s website, magazine front cover, billboard, networking site… www.greengraphics.co.uk Tel. 01234 709753 www.clarity-software.com

hP announces new vehicle wrapping training courses hP certified installers will be able to offer five year warranty on vehicle wraps – HP has announced that it has developed a new vehicle wrapping training course for novice and experienced installers, in association with the Sign School and Bigger Stickers. Vehicle wraps are fast growing in popularity as they can offer marketeers and brand owners a high impact, cost effective marketing tool. The two day course aims at taking HP latex ink users through the entire vehicle wrapping process including sales, marketing, design, production and after sales care. The course will highlight best practice in vehicle wrapping, looking at a range of applications from fleet vehicle livery to individual prestige wraps. The course will focus on wrapping with HP’s vehicle wrapping solution which is built upon a combination of flexible HP latex ink, which does not crack and can stretch with vinyl vehicle wraps during mounting and HP air release adhesive gloss cast vinyl. This 51 micron high performance white case vinyl features a gloss finish and a grey permanent opaque, air release adhesive, and is ideal for long-term graphic applications. James Deacon, an independent vinyl wrapping specialist from the Sign School and director of Bigger Stickers, will run the course as the HP approved trainer. Deacon has twelve years experience wrapping vehicles and has been training vehicle wrapping technicians for the last five years. At the end of the course, attendees who have successfully completed practical and written assessments will become HP certified installers and will be able to offer a five year performance warranty on vehicle wrapping with HP air release adhesive gloss cast vinyl. The new HP warranty will include image and material performance; with clean removal for up to five years (terms and conditions apply). DUPLO, MAKING MORE IS ON THE CARDS
DuPlo has launched a new desktop card cutter, to add to its growing family of digital finishing solutions. The Ultra Cut 130 is the “the fastest business card cutter in its class” and is ideal for cutting an array of digital print applications including business cards, postcards and photo cards. The Ultra Cut 130 is capable of producing 130 business cards per minute despite its small footprint; meaning 500 cards can be finished in under four minutes. As with all of Duplo’s machines automated precision is the ethos of the machine with no manual adjustments required and within 0.2mm accuracy. The machine can handle up to 350gsm. With 12 job memories available, the user is able to create and recall recurring jobs with ease as well as adjust card length, top margin and width of the gutter cut through the simple control panel. The machine also features a first cut mark sensor, meaning that the machine is ‘load and go’ and extremely accurate, regardless of any shift with the print. Optional scoring and perforating modules are available with the Ultra Cut 130, and changing these is a quick and tool-less operation. The machine features a 25mm stack, with a 500 card receiving tray and can accept SRA4 paper, meaning you can simply cut SRA3 in half with a simple dead cut. “We have an extraordinary range of multifinishers with the likes of the DC-615 and DC-645 and the introduction of the Ultra Cut 130 means we have a perfect entry level machine for our range. With a short run of business cards, there is a high labour time and cost knock on, with many cuts and turns needed to finish business cards. The work is the same whether it is 3,000 business cards or 500. This coupled with the extra machine set up required to offline perforate, which you can do inline with the Ultra Cut 130, means this is a machine that helps you make the best use of your time in the bindery.” comments Peter Jolly at Duplo UK For more information visit www.duplouk.com.
Printing company to share its success with resellers
a far growing printing firm has launched a new scheme which allows other companies to tap into the huge demand it has enjoyed for its contemporary and luxury business cards. Durham based Fullcolourcards. co.uk has launched a reseller scheme following its investment in new technology allowing it to produce high end business cards featuring a shimmering Spot UV finish. The company will allow copy shops, graphic design firms and digital printers to retail the cards at an incredibly competitive price and market them online. Clients that pay to join the reselling initiative will instantly benefit from a further discount on the North East company’s already competitive prices, allowing them to pass savings to their customers. Fullcolourcards.co.uk will also create a bespoke web link for its reselling clients so that everything it sells on its own site will be visible and branded on the client’s site. Fullcolourcards.co.uk was originally conceived as a specialist business card printing firm but investment in technology has since given it the capacity to offer low cost, fast turnaround services for almost any printing need. As well as its ultra-luxurious Spot UV and traditional business cards, the company produces postcards, leaflets, NCR pads and pop-up banners. Late last year, the company won the Growth in Business category at the prestigious Star Radio Business Awards 2010, which highlight the best firms in County Durham and North Yorkshire. Elementary my dear Watson Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. As they lay down for the night, Holmes said:” Watson, look up into the sky and tell me what you see?” Watson said, “I see millions and millions of stars.” Holmes: “And what does that tell you?” Watson: “Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Theologically, it tells me that God is great and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorogically, it tells me that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?” Holmes: “Somebody stole our tent.”
He’s Behind You A defendant was on trial for murder. There was strong evidence indicating guilt, but there was no corpse. In the defence’s closing statement the lawyer, knowing that his client would probably be convicted, resorted to a trick: ‘Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I have a surprise for you all,’ the lawyer said as he looked at his watch. ‘Within one minute, the person presumed dead in this case will walk into this courtroom.’ He looked toward the courtroom door. The jurors, somewhat stunned, all looked on eagerly. A minute passed. Nothing happened. Finally the lawyer said, ‘Actually, I made up the previous statement. But you all looked on with anticipation. I therefore put it to you that there is reasonable doubt in this case as to whether anyone was killed and insist that you return a verdict of not guilty.’ The jury, clearly confused, retired to deliberate. A few minutes later, the jury returned and pronounced a verdict of guilty. ‘But how?’ inquired the lawyer. ‘You must have had some doubt; I saw all of you stare at the door.’ The jury foreman replied: ‘Oh, we did look, but your client didn’t!

Gender Bender A young man was trying to park his car between two others. He put it in reverse, and bang… right into the car behind him. He then went forward and bang… right into the car in front. A young woman watching the manoeuvre couldn’t contain herself. “Do you always park by ear?” she asked.
No repro sale A paper sales representative stops at a small printing plant in Norwich. He presents a box of cigars to the manager as a gift. ‘No, thanks,’ says the plant manager. ‘I tried smoking a cigar once and I didn’t like it.’ The sales rep shows his display swatch and then, hoping to clinch a sale, offers to take the manager out for a beer. ‘No, thanks,’ the print manager replied. ‘I tried alcohol once, but didn’t like it.’ Then the salesman glances out the officer window and sees a golf course. ‘I suppose you play golf,’ says the salesman. ‘I’d like to invite you to be a guest at my club.’ ‘No, thanks,’ the manager says. ‘I played golf once, but I didn’t like it.’ Just then a young man enters the office. ‘Let me introduce my son, Bill,’ says the plant manager. ‘Let me guess,’ the salesman replies. ‘An only child?’
Life and Soul At a dinner party, one of the guests, an obnoxiously loud young copier salesman, tried to make clever remarks about everyone and everything. When he was served a piece of meat, he picked it up with his fork, held it up and smirked: ‘Is this pig?’ Another guest, sitting opposite, asked quietly: ‘Which end of the fork are you referring to?

A biology teacher wished to demonstrate to his students the harmful effects of alcohol on living organisms. For his experiment, he showed them a beaker with pond water in which there was a thriving civilization of worms. When he added some alcohol into the beaker the worms doubled-up and died. “Now,” he said,” what do you learn from this?” An eager student gave his answer. “Well the answer is obvious,” he said “if you drink alcohol, you’ll never have worms.”
A little old lady is on a bus, buying a ticket from the bus conductor, fumbling in a voluminous bag for the correct change. After 15 minutes the conductor becomes so enraged that he hits her on the head with the, ticket-dispenser, and the poor old dear dies instantly. Not surprisingly, he is convicted and put on death row. Just before he is to be electrocuted, his last request is for 12 pounds of bananas, which he devours. They strap him into the chair, flip the switch, and he just sits there, smiling. According to tradition, this is considered a reprieve from God and he is freed. Somehow he gets his old job back, and he is happily dispensing tickets when he sees a girl stick her gum on the back of a seat on the bus. Enraged, he lunges out with the ticket dispenser, breaking the offender’s neck and killing her. Again, he is convicted and sent to death row. He again eats the 12 pounds of bananas, and lo and behold, the elctricity does not harm him. This time the executioner cleans the contacts, makes him sit in a bucket of water, he tries everything — but the conductor won’t die. So again, he is set free. Amazingly he regains his job. It takes him one day to lose his temper and beat to death a young boy who starts to chew his bus ticket. He returns to death row, eats the bananas, and survives the electrocution. At this point, the executioner can take no more — his professional pride has

been hurt. Before setting our friend free again, he asks him his secret — ‘what is it with the bananas?’. ‘Oh, the bananas have nothing to do with it’, replies our friend. ‘I’m just a bad conductor.’
More American Nous During the initial space flights, NASA discovered that biro pens didn’t work under zero gravity conditions. To beat the problem, NASA spent 6 years and $2 million in designing a pen for use in space. The pen would work under zero gravity conditions due to the pressurized ink inside, it would work under sub zero conditions, underwater, on glass and virtually any surface known to man. The Russians used a pencil.
Flying Fuel A woman walks into a pub and sees a really good looking bloke sitting at the bar. She goes over and asks him what he is drinking. He says ‘Magic Bitter...!’ She thinks he’s a bit of a nutter, so she walks around the pub. After realising that there is no one else worth talking to, she goes back to the man sitting at the bar. She says, ‘That isn’t really Magic Bitter, is it...?’ He says, ‘Yes. I’ll show you.’ So, he takes a gulp of the bitter, jumps out the window, flies around the building three times, and comes back into the window. She can’t believe it. She says to him, ‘I bet you can’t do that again...!’ So, he takes another drink of the bitter, jumps out the window, flies around the building three times, and comes back in the window. She is amazed. She WANTS Magic Bitter... She NEEDS Magic Bitter...She CRAVES Magic Bitter...! ! ! So the bloke says to the bartender, ‘Give her a pint of what I’m having...!’ She gets her pint, takes a gulp, jumps out the window, plummets 30 stories, bounces of a lamp post and breaks every bone in her body. The bartender looks up at the bloke and says, ‘Superman, sometimes you can be a real b*****d.
