HP Latex Tour

HP has announced that the European Latex Applications tour has started to demonstrate the vast opportunities available to Print Service Providers (PSPs) using HP Latex printing technologies. Central to the tour is a 16.5m long customised truck and trailer, which was on display at FESPA Digital – the first official stop on a road show that will subsequently visit various cities across Europe throughout 2011. Designed to inspire and show how incorporating HP Latex printers, inks and compatible HP substrates into their operations can deliver business enhancing opportunities to PSPs, the events will feature informative presentations, customer testimonials, handson workshops and live product demonstrations on a 152.4cm (60in) HP Designjet L25500 Printer. The tour will focus on how users can expand their creative applications offering and undertake a host of innovative graphic arts projects by maximising the multi-substrate printing capability of latex printers. As well as the HP Designjet L25500, these also include the new HP Scitex LX820 and LX850 Printers. Additionally, the road show will explain the environmental benefits offered by HP Latex printing solutions and how these technologies allow PSPs to limit the impact of their operations on the environment, while also fulfilling certain stipulations required by their own customers. “Based on our successful latex demo days, our European latex applications tour will demonstrate how PSPs can produce a wide array of environmentally

responsible projects, while still achieving exceptionally good print quality at high production speeds,” said Laura De La Pascua, marketing manager, HP Designjet Business, EMEA. “At each stop of the tour, attendees will be able to meet with HP specialists to discover how latex printing can help achieve high profit margins through streamlining workflows, reducing turnaround times and adding value to applications.” HP Latex Inks provide print durability and display permanence comparable to eco-solvent inks and low-solvent inks, and their water based formulation helps reduce the impact of printing on the environment. From durable outdoor signage to odourless indoor displays, HP Latex Inks provide high productivity printing and broad media versatility across both coated and uncoated substrates. Sessions will showcase the new market opportunities enabled by the versatility of latex ink including non-traditional signage applications, such as wallpaper; indoor decorative textiles, printing on uncoated fabrics and fine art canvas reproductions. Previously impossible applications, such as printing for enclosed spaces, for example lifts, or places where strict regulations are in place, like in hospitals and restaurants are also possible using HP Latex Ink printers. HP is encouraging those interested in attending to register early to avoid disappointment. For the tour schedule and to register for a session please see www.latextour.com. www.hp.com.

Konica Minolta receives BERTL award Konica Minolta’s bizhub PRESS C8000 digital production print system has received ‘Exceptional 5-Star Rating’ from The Business Equipment Research and Test Laboratories Inc (BERTL) in the United States. The ‘Exceptional 5-Star Rating’ is highly significant because BERTL is an independent testing laboratory providing objective, independent product evaluation reports and comparative analyses on imaging devices and software solutions. BERTL ‘Exceptional 5-Star Rating’ is only awarded to industry leading products, and positions the bizhub PRESS C8000 as the must have colour digital press for the production print marketplace. “Konica Minolta has drawn the line in the sand and set a new quality of standard with the bizhub PRESS C8000,” said Arthur V. Wynne, III, President, BERTL, Inc. “This feature rich production system certainly steps up to the challenge and exceeds expectations by delivering an end to end production solution. Customers concerned with image quality and full production capabilities will find that the bizhub PRESS C8000 will not only meet their needs but exceed their expectations. BERTL analysts were very impressed with the image quality generated from the bizhub C8000.” During the extensive product testing, the bizhub PRESS C8000 reached 5-Star Ratings in high profile categories such as finishing, media handling, printing, image quality and features. BERTL also mentioned the system’s security and workflow capabilities as well as its ease of use and configuration options with three different image controllers. BERTL concluded “the bizhub PRESS C8000 delivers market leading innovation in the areas of productivity, reliability and workflow enhancement, and raises

the bar in the production print industry.” For Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK) Ltd, Pauline Brooks, Group Product Manager for the Production Print Division commented, “The Konica Minolta approach to customer intimacy is key in providing outstanding equipment, only through customer intimacy can we truly understand what our customers want and need from production class equipment. The BERTL 5-Star rating provides an excellent independent endorsement of the bizhub PRESS C8000’s performance, quality and reliability. It is an endorsement that buyers can trust and use as a benchmark. Konica Minolta is committed to providing outstanding digital print solutions to meet the needs of print professionals and the BERTL 5-Star rating is clear evidence of this.” www.konicaminolta.co.uk

Mondi’s first UK Golden Ticket The first UK winner of the Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper Golden Ticket competition is Jonathan Bower, Branch Manager at Kall Kwik, Chiswick. The Golden Tickets have been inserted into reams of Mondi’s Color Copy SRA3 100gsm paper as part of its European prize competition launched late last year. Jonathan is the second of 12 lucky Color Copy prize winners to have found a Golden Ticket, (the first was found in France) and he will now enjoy a European event in Vienna which includes flights and accommodation for him and his partner as his prize. “I’m delighted to be a winner with Color Copy and am really looking forward to going to Vienna as we have never been there before,” said a delighted Jonathan. Jonathan’s Kall Kwik branch has been established for 26 years and has 12 employees who work within the branch and its print room. The print

Bill Offer re-elected Chairman of The Printing Charity

Bill Offer was unanimously elected Chairman of The Printing Charity for a second term at the charity’s Annual General Meeting held at Southwood Court, Basildon. He has been on the charity’s Board of Trustees since 1998. He says: “I’m looking forward to continuing my long association with the charity and working with it to achieve the ambitious target it has set to help 2000 people nationally by 2017. We need more people to know that the charity exists to help people financially in the printing and publishing industries.” Bill is the third generation of his family to work in the printing industry. He began his printing career in the Bindery at Odhams Press in 1956, followed by five years as Bindery Manager at the Shenval Press. In 1968 he was appointed a lecturer at the London College of Printing and in 1979 he became Deputy Dean of the School of Printing Technology, a post he held for over 30 years. The charity’s Annual Report and Accounts for the year ended 31 December 2010 were also approved by members at the AGM. They show the charity has a balanced budget and helped over 540 people financially, up from 349 in 2009. Stephen Gilbert, the charity’s Chief Executive, adds: “We’re delighted to have Bill as our Chairman for a second term. Many people in the industry know him from his LCP days, so his help making more people aware of the charity as a leading national charity for the printing and publishing is invaluable.” www.theprintingcharity.org.uk

room uses Mondi’s Color Copy standard, Color Copy silk and Color Copy glossy. The main product they use is the Color Copy SRA3 range. Jonathan says that it allows them more flexibility in the products that they print. The Color Copy range is used for applications on their Canon Image Press C7000VP printer. The branch uses Color Copy for a range of printing applications, including university prospectuses; postcards; folders; newsletters, flyers and training manuals. The branch purchases its Color Copy paper from Elliott Baxter, via their merchant representative Steve Tinniswood. Speaking about the performance of Color Copy Jonathan said, “We are happy with Color Copy and wouldn’t change from it as it prints so well. The colours are really clear and we haven’t had any issues with it. The glossy and silk range also gives a great finish.” The Color Copy Golden Ticket competition is open to Mondi customers in the UK and Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France. 12 Golden Tickets have been put into reams of Mondi’s Color Copy SRA3 100gsm paper. Each Golden Ticket winner will receive flights and accommodation to Vienna. The prize winning event is to be held over a weekend in September 2011. www.mondigroup.com

ST IVES CHOOSE DUPLO COATER St Ives Direct the Direct Marketing Services division of the St Ives Group have purchased a Duplo Ultra 205A UV Coater to enable them to “automate and streamline” their productivity for a large Royal Mail contract. St Ives, supplier of print management services to the iRed Partnership a wholly owned subsidiary of Royal Mail, announced in October that it had provided the engine for the postal service’s new Direct Mail service, Mailshots Online. The Leeds based site has HP Indigo 3500 and WS3200 presses which are used to print the daily run of direct mail items downloaded from the Mailshots Online service. This could be anything from 500 to 20,000 pieces per day. Then to protect the print, the sheets were, in the old process, laminated which formed a problematic part of the workflow, explains lead printer Ian Casey. “Laminating does provide a nice finish to the printed sheet, however it is not particularly practical for this type of contract. The laminator doesn’t have particularly quick running speeds; it was creating something of a bottleneck. There are also quality issues with laminating which can be susceptible to peeling when being passed through what is today a highly automated and mechanised mailing infrastructure within the Royal Mail,” says Ian. “We were also getting requests from our clients to consider and review the environmental impact of laminating. As laminating film is not bio degradable, we had to have a serious think about a suitable alternative that met environmental requirements.” After careful consideration of many devices, which included HP’s own inline coating solution, Duplo’s Ultra 205A was installed. The 205A is a flood U.V. coating machine, that provides an enhanced and protective Gloss; Matt or Satin finish on a wide range of Digital and Offset papers. The Ultra can accommodate a broad range of paper stocks and sizes from 521mm (W) x 710mm (L), and paper weights from 120gsm- 350gsm. Running speeds are up to 40 metres per minute. “We preferred the offline coating route, as it meant that we were able to feed print from our two HP Indigos into one machine. This ensured we would maximise our productivity as the coater more than matched the output levels of both presses. So we looked at the offline coaters available on the market, and we felt that the speed and high quality output of the Duplo achieved the high standards required of clients such as Royal Mail.” comments Casey. St Ives Direct have reported very positive results since the machine was installed. “The machine has made a real difference to our operation. It is twice as fast as our laminator and we have found it extremely reliable. It is as important to the success of this facility as the presses themselves,” concludes Ian. www.duplouk.co.uk

Roland’s Inn

When Classic Lines Plus Signs was asked to replace the main sign at a local pub, The Railway Inn, the company was quick to utilise its recently installed Roland VersaCAMM VS print and cut machine to produce an innovative solution. As a result, the new display features the metallic ink capabilities of the machine, as well as demonstrating its vivid and durable solid colours. Measuring 700 x 1100 mm, the double sided sign created by Classic Lines Plus Signs is mounted to a secure bracket onto the exterior front wall of The Railway Inn. Clearly visible in daylight, the display also features twin LED fluorescent lights which provide effective, yet low cost, illumination. The company used its Roland VersaCAMM VS-640 with Oracal 351 polyester film to produce the brilliant red background and black elements of the sign, incorporating the machine’s metallic ink to generate a strong gold for the sweeping rail design and crisp lettering incorporated into the display. Roland’s Eco-Sol Max inks resulted in bright, durable colours with excellent adhesion to the material. The prints were over laminated with Oraguard 215 polymer PVC film, for additional durability of up to five years in a tough outdoor environment, and the finished sign was mounted within a double sided moulded lightweight yet durable GRP frame. The colour co-ordinates with the display to provide

strong visual impact so that visitors to the pub are instantly attracted to the bright red and gold design. Classic Lines Plus Signs specialises in producing displays which incorporate creative design elements within practical and durable applications. The addition of the Roland VersaCAMM VS-640 1.62 m print and cut system to its fleet of sign making equipment extends the company’s capabilities by adding metallic and white ink output to its existing options. Always a Roland user since purchasing its first computer driven sign making system back in the eighties, Classic Lines Plus Signs is becoming renowned for creating and producing a hugely diverse range of end products. The company’s thriving on-line store makes it simple for customers to purchase displays, canvas prints, promotional goods, garments, engraved items and stickers, and many other bespoke items. “Producing the new sign for The Railway Inn was a typical example of how we can incorporate the latest technologies into a traditional application by adding metallic ink,” states Nichola Johnson of Classic Lines Plus Signs. “The Roland VersaCAMM VS-640 is enabling us to increase the diversity of our work, and its integrated cutting is another bonus as we’ve always favoured the ability to be able to use a single machine to handle both the printing and cutting elements of a job.” Rob Goleniowski, Business Manager – Sign & Graphics of Roland DG, comments: “The Railway Inn sign is, indeed, a classic example of the power and capabilities of the VersaCAMM VS series, demonstrating both the effectiveness of our metallic ink and the vivid, durable results obtainable from the machine’s Eco-Sol Max formulations.” Roland’s VersaCAMM VS series comprises four model sizes of 1.62 m, 1.37 m, 1.07 m and 0.76 m in width. The range is also available in three different ink versions, these being CMYKLcLm plus metallic and white, a standard six colour palette of CMYKLcLm or as a dual CMYK option. All machines come with Roland OnSupport which provides remote diagnostics, such as a low ink warning or notification when a job is complete. Further information about Classic Lines Plus Signs is available by visiting www.classiclinesplussigns.co.uk or calling 01623 661457. 3D Signs for Peppa Pig World

Service Graphics, the large format print and display division of the St Ives Group, was selected to work alongside Richard Matthews Themed Attractions Ltd (RMA Ltd) to produce signs and graphics for Peppa Pig World which opened on 9th April at Paultons Park located on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire. Service Graphics produced approximately ninety 3D signs in a short timescale, each adhering to both the strict style guide laid down by Entertainment One UK and RMA Ltd’s design brief. The challenge included matching the specific pantone references for all of the Peppa Pig World characters and the colours used within the background graphics, including the grass and sky. The size and scale of each of the Peppa Pig characters also had to be taken into consideration during manufacture. The 3D signs were made from a combination of aluminum and acrylic. The

background graphics were spray painted onto 3mm thick aluminum. Each individual letter used on the signage was cut out from 5mm clear acrylic and then sprayed to match the exact pantone reference. The letters were then individually glued to the aluminum background, alongside an accompanying graphic which had also been mounted onto 5mm acrylic. In keeping with the overall aesthetic theme, the reverse of each of the signs were painted to match the fences or posts they are fastened to. In the case of the extra large entrance signs, each character was individually mounted onto the aluminum sign, being fixed each time from the rear to the background. Stephen Lorton, Commercial Director of Paultons Park said, “We have a long established relationship with Service Graphics and have worked closely with them over the years to produce signs and graphics for the park, so when we decided to build the world’s first Peppa Pig attraction, Service Graphics was the obvious choice. We presented them with a relatively short timescale to meet for the Preview Day opening and as always the brief was successfully completed and we opened to very positive media feedback.” “We were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Paultons Park again on its newest venture, Peppa Pig World. The project allowed us to demonstrate our colour matching capabilities, draw on our inner child and produce 3D signage that makes for a rather enjoyable finished product,” said Scott King, Sales Director of Service Graphics. Service Graphics’ signage at Peppa Pig World can be seen now. For information on opening times visit www.paultonspark.co.uk

THE FULL LIST OF WINNERS AND FINALISTS COMPANY OF THE YEAR

Winner (over £5m annual turnover) Eclipse Colour Winner (up to £5m annual turnover) AJS Labels Finalists: Inspirepac, Pinstripe Print Group, Print on Demand, Real Digital International

BPIF Excellence Awards Eclipse Colour and AJS Labels celebrated their success as BPIF Company of the Year 2011 winners at the BPIF Excellence Awards. As winners of the over £5m turnover and up to £5m turnover categories respectively, the two companies received their trophies at a spectacular awards ceremony held in the stunning and exotic surroundings of London’s Café de Paris, where guests were entertained by author and comedian Mark Steele, the brilliant celtic/rock band Bags of Rock, and the legendary burlesque dancers for which the venue is famous. Sponsored by Konica Minolta, J&G Environmental and BPIF Insurance Services (R K Harrison), The Awards were introduced by BPIF CEO Kathy Woodward, who described this year’s Finalists as “the cream of the industry”. Eclipse were praised for their focus on ‘smart change’ that harnessed their skills and capabilities and established alliances and partnerships that provided a ‘platform for excellence’, while self adhesive labels printer AJS Labels received the judges’ plaudits for their simple ‘back to basics approach’ to reconnect with customers and engage staff to deliver a service focussed on continual improvement. The night also saw a double triumph for Communisis, who won both the Health and Safety (over £5m annual turnover) and the Human Resources (over £5m annual turnover) awards. The marketing solutions provider was complimented on its ‘comprehensive risk management system’ and ‘positive employee culture’. Family run Kingfisher Print and Design, based in Totnes, Devon won the Human Resources (up to £5m annual turnover) award, with recognition for their engaged workforce who were ‘all pulling in the right direction’. Excellent monitoring systems and reduced environmental impact enabled book manufacturers T J International to scoop the Environment (over £5m turnover) award, while Hampshire based Making Impressions won the Environment (up to £5m turnover) award with its ‘positive environmental culture and impressive training programme’.

The Marketing Award went to Leicester based GI Solutions, well known for their innovative and cost effective direct mail print, who produced ‘a winning campaign that made comprehensive use of cross-media with a clear call to action’. Park Communications’ ability ‘to offer a winning combination of the right people and effective processes linked to a true customer focus’ enabled them to lift the Customer Service trophy. The Lean Manufacturing Award was secured by Newsprinters Broxbourne, the largest print site in the world producing over 20 million copies of The Sun, The News of the World, The Times, The Sunday Times, The Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph each week. They were described by the judges as having ‘taken the application of Lean Manufacturing to a new level which is exemplary for any industry’. The Innovation Award was keenly fought, with two joint winners emerging: Precision Printing and Ryedale Group. Managed print services provider Precision won their award for process innovation, while family owned Ryedale - the UK’s largest manufacturer of horticultural plant labels, point of sale products, and prepaid plastic telephone cards - won theirs for product innovation. Privately owned brochure, journal, book and music printers Halstan & Co were the victors in the Training and Development category. They demonstrated a willingness to include a total cross section of their workforce in a major training programme, putting every aspect of their business under the microscope. Outcomes were clearly measurable not only in individual NVQ accreditations but in the adoption of the team based recommendations for change. The 2011 Apprentice of the Year was Amey Herefordshire’s, Thomas Hancock, whose versatility in learning a wide range of skills in digital printing, finishing and print administration marked him out from the other candidates as a clear winner. GF Smith’s latest stock selector

In the coming weeks, members of the creative world will be taking receipt of the latest GFSmith stock selector. Coming over three years since the release of its predecessor, the brand new selector boasts an ambitious format and fresh thinking. The GFSmith stock selector has always been

widely regarded as the benchmark specification tool for coloured and textured papers. Invaluable as a catalyst for creativity or as the solution to design challenges, the GFSmith selector takes pride of place on the shelves of every self respecting creative studio. The latest version of this iconic creative mainstay will not disappoint its devotees. At first glance, the beautifully produced box format is significantly more substantial and comprehensive than earlier incarnations. On closer inspection, it offers two modes of paper selection, reflecting the different ways in which its users specify paper. For those making specification decisions based on colour, every substrate has been arranged in spectrum order, regardless of material type, texture or weight,

and then divided into two swatches: one for black and white stocks, and one for colours. For those searching by paper type, the Colorplan, Smooths, Textures and Specials ranges are displayed separately. By staying in tune with the needs of the creative community, and by employing the services of the best creative minds, GFSmith always strive to present their range of products in a way that is logical, helpful and inspiring. The new selector is no exception. The evolution in design is indicative of the company’s commitment to continually serve and inspire its market, and secures their position at the forefront of paper innovation. To request your personal copy of the new selector, email GFSmith at selector@gfsmith.com www.gfsmith.com

Faster Folding with DocuFold Pro Morgana Systems has announced the release of a significantly updated version of its DocuFold product with the introduction of the DocuFold Pro. Following the release of a number of “Pro” versions of its leading post-press products at last year’s IPEX show, Morgana continues to develop and enhance its equipment range, and this latest update includes both performance and operational improvements to the company’s flagship folding product. DocuFold, originally introduced to the market in 1994, was the first small format folding device to offer an automated set-up solution. Commenting on the latest enhancements, Ray Hillhouse, UK Sales Manager for Morgana, said: “DocuFold Pro provides for higher volume folding, in larger sizes, at higher speeds, with an even easier and faster set-up. We have added the new SmartScreen technology to the DocuFold Pro in order to improve operational efficiency and make the machine easier to learn and use.The enhancements mean that DocuFold Pro now offers the same sheet format and speed of the company’s Major folder. “These further

improvements help to complete the range of folder products at Morgana,” explains Mr Hillhouse. “The Major folder will still be available. It is still an important part of that range, and will be viewed as the entry level machine for Morgana customers.” In adopting the company’s unique SmartScreen technology — a common touch screen solution used throughout the Pro range — the DocuFold Pro becomes even easier to set-up and operate. All job parameters can be entered and stored for future use, with common sizes and fold patterns pre-installed in the system memory. New features include a Proof Fold Button which sends three sheets of the job through for a final check of the job before production. Sheets sizes of up to 674 x 365mm can be accommodated, with a maximum fold length of 300mm. Production speed is totally variable, with a maximum throughput of 27,500 A4 sheets per hour, or 18,000 A3 sheets. DocuFold Pro offers an on the run micro adjustment for any fine tuning of the fold, and a perforating option is included as standard. Batch count and total job count are

available and highly visible to the user. Final UK pricing is currently being calculated, but Morgana anticipates a price in the region of £8,200. www.morgana.co.uk

Xerox Colour 800 Press Now Available The system — printing at 80 pages per minute — is designed for commercial and in-plant print operations as well as marketing communication firms. Like the Xerox Colour 1000, which was launched last year, it is a high volume device which can produce high definition image quality on a wide range of paper stock, but at a lower speed than the Colour 1000. The Xerox Colour 800 Press is positioned between the Xerox DocuColor

7002/8002 Digital Colour Presses and the 100 page per minute Xerox Colour 1000 Press. It prints at 2400 x 2400 dpi for excellent sharpness and uniformity and uses Xerox’s new low melt Emulsion Aggregation (EA) Dry Ink, which delivers an offset like finish. EA Dry ink also has good de inkability credentials. The Colour 800 Press does not support the Colour 1000’s clear dry ink option. www.xerox.com

DUPLO LAUNCHES NEXT GENERATION CREASER/FOLDER Creasing and folding combined into one machine, fully automated, with an easy to operate touch screen. These are only some key features of Multigraf’s creaser/folder TOUCHLINE CF375, supplied by Duplo to the UK market. This new generation of folding machines responds to the changing requirements of the digital and commercial print finishing market. The TOUCHLINE generation offers more flexibility and automation than any other product in its class. The creaser/folder TOUCHLINE CF375 handles paper stocks up to 400 gsm, creases and folds the products, all in one single pass. It employs the unique Multigraf Swing-Bar System for creasing without cracking. The sheets don’t stop during the creasing process. The automated set up of the crease depth with different positions is another fantastic feature of the TOUCHLINE CF375. This new technology allows for the speeding up of the creasing process with an accuracy of 0.1 mm. The folding section of the TOUCHLINE CF375 uses Multigraf’s patented Pro-Knife System. It was designed not only to achieve a perfect folding process but also to avoid marking and scratching on the products. These electronically controlled knives are also used as deflector bars, contacting the leading edge only. Due to the extra large diameter fold rollers, there is no deformation on the folded products at all. By using this technology, the TOUCHLINE CF375 runs at a consistent speed of more than 6000 A4 sheets per hour, regardless of the number of creases and folds applied. TOUCHLINE is equipped with a pile feeder using vacuum belt technology, air knife control for a perfect sheet separation, and double sheet detection. There is no additional pump needed. This offers less noise emissions in a print room environment. The maximum sheet size is 375 x 650 mm (optional table extension available).

Multigraf’s TOUCHLINE CF375 can be used as an integrated creaser/folder performing both functions in one single pass, as a stand alone creaser when folding is not needed or as a perforator when no other operation is required. The delivery side consists of two different output levels. For creasing and folding, the products are delivered to the upper level onto an electric shingling delivery belt with auto settings. For creasing or perforating only, the sheets are delivered to the lower level into a delivery tray. In this process, the sheets are not running through the fold rollers at all, avoiding deformation. An online perforating device is available for the lower exit level. TOUCHLINE has been designed as a space saving device, standing on wheels. The floor space needed is 1860 x 600 mm only. Multigraf’s inspiration for this new product line was given by its name TOUCHLINE. Press the button and off you go! By simply entering the sheet length and fold type through the touch screen, the machine creates all settings automatically. No manual adjustments are needed. A centralised, multifunctional button offers all necessary functions for a fast production start. One touch operation The multifunctional control button allows for efficient production. It was designed and placed on the machine in a location that helps the operator increase productivity without the risk of incurring any harm. Vacuum pile feeder This vacuum feeder offers more than you could imagine. It contains vacuum belt technology, air knife control for perfect sheet separation, double sheet detection, and is easy to set up. Don’t worry, this feeder will handle your paper stock! Perforating device A perforating and slitting device is available for the lower delivery section. TOUCHLINE offers more flexibility due to additional online features. Accessibility to inner side All covers can be lifted off easily to give access to the inner workings of the TOUCHLINE CF375. www.duplouk.co.uk

ROLAND’S NEW ECO-UV S ELASTIC INK W

ith elasticity and flexibility being the key and an essential part of today’s graphic, industrial and packaging applications, Roland DG (UK) has announced a new formulation of UV-curable ink which is designed for use in the company’s innovative VersaUV family of printers. Ideal for increasing the potential generated from its LEC-330, LEC-540, LEC-300 and recently launched roll to roll and flat-bed wide format solution, the LEJ-640, the Roland Eco-UV S represents the next generation of chemistry which extends the capabilities of these platforms and their LED curing technology. The extra elasticity incorporated into the tough and durable Eco-UV S inks enables prints to be stretched and extended up to 220 percent, and this brings new output opportunities to users of Roland’s VersaUV platforms across all industry segments. The innovative chemistry enables effective and reliable production of prototypes where shrink films and packaging materials are required, and its moulding capabilities are perfect for adhering to the contours of PET bottles, plastic cups, thermoformed and vacuum formed products, plus three dimensional signs and displays, industrial items and novelties for interior décor. Roland’s new Eco-UV S ink is formulated to retain flawless image quality across uneven shapes, corrugated and irregular surfaces, indentations, corners and curves. Able to print onto a wide variety of shapes whilst retaining optimum adhesion and absolutely even colour consistency,

it is ideal for prototyping shrink labels for PET bottles, ABS, PMMA, polycarbonates and other traditionally difficult substrates. Used in conjunction with Roland’s VersaUV printers, the new Eco-UV S inks offer high levels of durability with their tough, fine quality of output complemented by the curing capabilities of LED long life lamps which don’t damage even the most sensitive of materials. These new inks are available in CMYK plus one channel of white, or a configuration of CMYK plus two channels of white. “Demand for our machines to be able to print increasingly to different, often difficult shapes, has resulted in the development of Roland’s new Eco-UV S ink formulation which addresses the requirements for a highly elastic UV-curable formulation,” explains Steve Chappell, Business Manager — Packaging, Proofing and Industrial Labelling, at Roland DG (UK) Ltd. “Prototyping and specialist products are now easy to manufacture with our versatile VersaUV printing platforms, and we can take their functionality one step further with this new ink chemistry’s adhesion and conformability of up to 220 percent.” Existing users of Roland’s LEC-330, LEC-540, LEC-300 and LEJ-640 UVcurable machines can upgrade their printers to accommodate the new Eco-UV S ink products. Purchasers of new platforms are able to specify their ink preferences at the time of ordering. Visit www.rolanddg.co.uk or call 0845 230 90 60 for more information.

Enfocus updates PitStop for iPad

Enfocus has announced update 2 of its PitStop Pro 10 and PitStop Server 10 software tools. Update 2 answers the needs of customers who require the ability to quickly and easily look at, and interact with, complex PDF files on e-reader devices such as the Apple iPad. “Viewing PDF files on tablet devices has not always proved to be a straightforward task. While they have become increasingly important within printing and publishing workflows, these devices might have limitations which cause lengthy delays waiting for a PDF to open. This can even crash the PDF reader application completely,” explains Elli Cloots, Director of Product Management at Enfocus.”With update 2 of PitStop Pro 10 and PitStop Server 10, we address the increasing market need for matching PDF files with these successful e-reader applications.” Update 2 of PitStop Pro 10 and PitStop Server 10 offer printers and publishers extended processing capabilities through the standard Enfocus Preflight Profiles and Action Lists. This allows them to choose parameters such as the file resolution, and to optimise the PDF accordingly for faster and better e-reader viewing. When zooming into a PDF, both images and text will retain the necessary image quality and level of interactivity. PitStop can also check live URLs in the PDF to ensure that they are linked to a website. With these latest versions Enfocus brings the PDF user experience to a higher level, while maintaining the same quality. Enfocus worked alongside several pilot customers to solve their most common problems, with particular focus on the extremely popular iPad device. Instead of a time consuming process of manual inspection at the production side, quality PDF files can now be made suitable for viewing on any e-reader, giving the user a more enjoyable experience. “This is an important step in a new direction for Enfocus,” says Cloots. “This feature has been developed upon the request of several major publishing houses. As their needs change, we also further develop our solutions to ensure those needs are met. We expect these kinds of applications to become increasingly important, and we’ll be continually developing our software to keep pace.” PitStop Pro 10 and PitStop Server 10 became available in October 2010, and include powerful PDF editing and preflighting, colour management and collaborative working tools. Update 1, announced in February 2011, added support for Adobe Acrobat X Standard and Pro, and compatibility with the latest PDF/X-4:2010 and PDF/A ISO standards. PitStop Pro update 2 and PitStop Server 10 update 2 are free updates for all existing PitStop 10 users, from www.enfocus.com. For specific pricing on PitStop 10 and upgrades, contact your preferred resellers or contact sales@enfocus.com.

Reinventing Yourself Top Tips

If you¹re fed up with the job you’re in, want an exciting new career, are seeking promotion, hoping for a pay rise or to get noticed at work, then it¹s time to reinvent your personal branding says one of the UK¹s best known brand advisers, Simon Middleton.

F

ounder of the consultancy Brand Strategy Guru, Simon has spent years helping businesses to develop brand stories that are authentic, distinctive and compelling and now he’s using his core branding principles to help people improve their careers, self-esteem and relationships in all areas of life. Simon¹s evening master class in Reinventing A Brand New You at Wallacespace St. Pancras, London from 6pm on Wednesday 26th October 2011, will condense his specialist expertise and know-how so you can successfully rebrand YOU. Says Simon: “The concept of personal branding has been going down the wrong road, a superficial road, and needs to be reinvented. In fact, for many people, reinvention is precisely the thing that needs to happen. People get stuck in jobs they hate, in relationships that aren’t fulfilling, and in virtually all areas of life, and often because people believe that they have made their bed and have to lie in it. We need to fulfill our potential and we do this by developing our unique, authentic, distinctive and compelling life-story: and living it!” “What people actually need to do is to assess their personal brand strategy with the same thoroughness that successful companies like Apple, Virgin and others do for their brands. You need to look at what you want your purpose to be, whether as an employee, an entrepreneur, even as a life partner. From a solid purpose you can then build strategy and a powerful personal narrative — in short, the only way to build a powerful personal brand, one that will actually make any difference to your life, is to do it profoundly and deeply: to actually reinvent yourself — but authentically!”

4. In a small business, or in a team within a big organisation, your personal ‘brand’ is best expressed through a compelling narrative about how and what you contribute. It’s no good claiming to be valuable. That’s like a comedian claiming to be funny. You have to ‘be’ valuable. 5. Along the way, and especially when your contribution is being noticed, you will find others who try to stop you, trip you up, or trap you. Pay no heed to those, other than to be aware of them. Engaging in inter-staff warfare can only damage your personal brand and will never enhance your career. 6. Great brands are founded on authenticity, not on lies. Never, ever, invent a better back story for yourself. You will, ultimately, be found out. Instead tell your real story: but tell it better by engaging emotions and imagination. Middleton lives by his reinvention advice, and has 7. Don’t go for promotion just because you think you should. Don’t follow the career path as recreated his career on numerous occasions. 22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | COPY SHOP NEWS | JULY-AUGUST 2011

What is all the fuss about? Taking a page or two out of the photobook. Martin Christie writes…

T

he concept of the photo book has been around for a long time. Previously hard copies of the originals were placed in an album by hand. The arrival of digital files means they can be sized and arranged in a more sophisticated design than simple cut and paste, and the printing technology allows for the production of high quality personal booklets at a reasonable price, and in a reasonable time. They can range from little pocket-size versions, to large coffee table volumes to suit taste and pocket. I first spotted digitally printed, hard bound photobooks popping up at the annual Focus photographic exhibition some years ago, where they were initially aimed at the lucrative wedding market. Since then the idea has caught on and expanded into all areas as the flexibility of a multiple image presentation package was realised. The previous alternatives to the classic photo album were the portfolio, or the ring file with plastic or card inserts. Now there were possibilities to be more creative and individual, with text, logos and colourful backgounds all part of the options. This country has apparently been quite slow to

embrace the photobook experience compared to other leading western European countries. Whether this has been because of the culling of high street mini-labs in recent years, and hence the loss of an obvious shop window, is uncertain. What is certain is that internet commerce has taken the photobook to a whole new level with dozens of web pages listed, including familiar brand names as well as others less so. There is a certain irony to a virtual world taking advantage of encouraging hard copy printing, although in many respects it is an ideal tool for customers to take part in the creative part. The one thing that all the internet retailers share is an allegedly user-friendly style design facility for all clients to upload, edit and position their images - in effect, to do most of the work other than the actual printing. The interface can even warn, or at least gently advise, which images are low resolution and may result in poor quality when printed. The instant - apart from waiting for delivery of course - photobook is almost a made for web commerce product. With so many people

swopping images on social networking sites, it makes business sense to adapt to current fashions, and make it easier to take advantage of them. If the internet sites are that popular and adaptable then, is there any point in the retail counter of a digital print shop looking at photobooks ? Definitely, and for the very reason we still survive providing a direct contact with the customer in whatever form of printing. It may well be that future generations who grow up only interacting with other people by text or social network messages will shun the idea of negotiating a business face to face, but more likely that there will still be plenty of humans who prefer to discuss things with someone who can give an intelligent reply. As regular readers will know, we are a busy working copy shop as well as a trade magazine, with a broad and colourful range of customers here in Brighton - in fact many of them are keeping me distracted as I write this article. But as frustrating as they can be, they are an invaluable resource, and a direct connection to the real world. They always ask more questions than be conveniently covered in a tick options box on a website, or have items to be reproduced that don’t exactly fit into regular sizes. Most importantly, I have learnt that what they may be asking for is not always what they want, and there are times when you have to go through the whole process to find out what they want to end up with. It’s one thing a non-human interface can’t do - take that intelligent step beyond the immediately apparent into the possible. The internet is very good for finding things you want when you know what they are, but not so good at finding the possibilities. That’s why the pop-up ads and suggestion boxes that appear magically at the side of google mail, or facebook or any similar site based on random scanning of your interests never quite seem to hit the right spot .They may be intelligent but they’re not clever. The clever bit is seeing a customer’s image and convincing them that it would better on an expensive canvas as a present rather than a cheap photocopy. That’s where the human interface comes in, and can add on real value to what

otherwise would be a very basic deal. Similarly photobook printing could be made to suit a customer’s needs long before they knew what they were. Page for page they are a very cost effective way of producing individual or small run catalogues, with the only limitation being imagining what uses they could be put to. Any limited publication that demands more illustration or image than basic text could be a suitable candidate, and anything that would deserve a premium on presentation and impact might be a perfect choice. Of course the last thing a digital print shop needs to do in this present economic climate is invest in another expensive bit of kit to launch a new product that might pay off in the longer term. It might be feasible for some of the big boys, but to do it properly the truth is that to enter now, the photobook market from scratch is an expensive major outlay for any business. The cost of say an Indigo press, the software to create the books, the correct finishing equipment, which will include large format printer for covers and lamination, all adds up. Plus you need skilled staff to operate it., and like any speciality that only comes with experience, and often at some cost.

v i v i d.

The hidden costs, on top of the kit, as every business learns the hard way, are the things that go wrong, and the print that doesn’t get paid for and has to be binned. To do it properly much better to use the structure that is already there, software, hardware and expertise. We have been talking recently with Fotoboox, a subsidury of our trade friends at Repropoint, with whom we already have a long trading relationship particularly with large format printing. Most importantly, we tried out their photobook creation software months ago, and are happy they have sorted out most of the bugs and queries inevitable in such a project. We will not only be working with them, but developing new and existing customers from our own client base with a view to exploring new avenues, and of course letting you know how we get on.So I am happy to recommend, if you have not already dipped your toes into the photobook pond, that you have a word with them if you are looking for a trade partnership. The Little Book of Commonsense

International Paper has produced “The Little Book of Commonsense” – a 24pp informative guide to sustainability and the paper industry. “The Little Book of Commonsense” demonstrates and illustrates how and why to get the best usability from paper and dispels some of the most common misconceptions concerning paper and its performance, and in particular its sustainability in terms of the environment. It illustrates that today, even in a global digital world, paper is as relevant as it has ever been for learning, productivity, creativity and sustainability. “The Little Book of Commonsense” asserts that paper is still the backbone of learning - through reading, writing or drawing. After all, as any well informed teacher would confirm, a paperless classroom would be cheating our children. As the booklet indicates – paper is for everyone. It doesn’t depend on local access to electricity, connectivity or software compatibility. What’s the best way to get everyone’s brains working together and achieving real synergy? Give everyone a piece of paper and a pencil. After all, new ideas and new thinking flow much faster on paper. As for its environmental credentials paper is surprisingly sustainable. Every year more trees are planted than harvested. That’s one of the reasons why there is over 30% more forest in the EU than

there was 50 years ago. Younger trees are also much better at absorbing carbon. All paper-based forest products trap carbon and store it until it is recycled. So as “The Little Book of Commonsense” states, next time you see “think twice before printing this email”, don’t think twice, think three times. “I can be proud to print because when paper is used a whole lot more trees are planted.” Secondly, “The paper I’m using comes from sustainably managed forests that are helping to fight climate change.” And third, “How will I recycle it once I’m done to make sure it stays a virtuous circle?” Mike Robertson, International Paper’s Country Manager UK stated, “In 2011, we produced “The Little Green Book” which proved extremely popular, we are confident that “The Little Book of Commonsense” will again prove a popular tool to promote paper.” “The Little Book of Commonsense” is

printed on PEFC certified paper, ensuring that the materials used come from sustainably managed sources. So next time someone gives you a hard time about using paper, send them a copy of “The Little Book of Commonsense.” For more information on International Paper and its product ranges and to obtain a copy of “The Little Book of Commonsense”, visit www. internationalpaper.com/uk or contact Mike Robertson @ mike.robertson@ipaper.com.

ARJOWIGGINS EYE-CATCHING NEW MARKETING CAMPAIGN

Arjowiggins Graphic has launched an exciting new marketing campaign, which has been developed to inform designers and printers about the benefits of using its Satimat green and Maine gloss green stocks. The new campaign consists of colourful, eye-catching mailers and brochures, which showcase the excellent quality finish that can be achieved by using Satimat green and Maine gloss green, two ultra smooth papers that have both high whiteness levels and excellent green credentials. 3,500 mailers and 4,000 brochures are being sent and presented to printers and designers with the aim of advising them on the high quality finish that Satimat green and Maine gloss green provide. Both of these stocks are FSC Mixed Certified 75% Recycled and can be used for both

The brochure contains a selection of beautiful photographs that highlight the superb end result that can be achieved when printing on different grammages of the 75% recycled stocks. This proves that there is no need to compromise on quality when choosing recycled paper stocks for marketing communications. Chris Sandwell, Sales and Marketing Director at Elliott Baxter & Company Ltd, who are the exclusive distributor says: “It is important that printers are aware of products that give a high quality result whilst maintaining recycled fibre content. We have seen a real demand for stocks such as Satimat green and Maine gloss green and, as CSR becomes more of a priority on the business agenda, these products are the perfect choice for end users looking for an excellent quality finish that doesn’t compromise green credentials.” www.arjowigginsgraphic.com

Print your customers T&C’s for more GP Are your terms incorporated? The standard terms and conditions on which your business operates are of fundamental importance. Often forgotten about, these terms should form the basis of your agreement with your customer. To rely on these, however, you must first ensure that they are incorporated into your contract. In order to do this you must satisfy the following three requirements. First, you must give your customer or client notice of the terms before you enter into a contract with them. Second, the terms must be presented in a document which is intended to be contractual. Finally, you must take reasonable steps to bring the terms to the attention of your customer, especially unusual or onerous ones. How you do this is up to you and there are a number of ways in which a business can ensure this is done. The simplest way is to include them in the contract which both you and your customer sign. In practice, however, incorporation in this way is seldom achieved, with most businesses instead choosing to establish their terms by supplying them in their pre-contract correspondence. This can include documents such as company brochures and marketing material, quotations, purchase orders, order forms, etc.

The wording used to incorporate the terms on these forms is also important. The language must be clear and unambiguous and should ideally use express language of incorporation such as “this order is subject to our terms and conditions”. A question that arose recently, however, was whether terms that were simply referred to on order forms as being “available on request”, could be interpreted as incorporating them into the contract between the parties? The answer came in the case of Rooney and Another v CSE Bournemouth Limited, where the Court of Appeal held that the use of this very wording was, in some circumstances, sufficient. In this case it was found that although the wording did not

expressly incorporate the terms, a reasonable person when receiving the order form would have construed the phrase to mean that the terms were incorporated. This case has arguably therefore widened the scope in which businesses may choose to incorporate their terms. Businesses should however be careful if choosing to exercise this approach as the Court clearly stated that its finding was based on all the facts of the case, which means that terms included in this way will not always be incorporated. It is safer, therefore, to expressly state that your standard terms of business are included, either before or at the time the contract is entered into. The case highlights the importance of ensuring terms and conditions are incorporated into your contracts properly. The dispute in this case ultimately resulted from the ambiguity in the wording on the forms and demonstrates why it is essential to get it right. BEST SMALL PRINTER FOR TRANSFER PAPER?

A lot of our 6600 print shops have invested in centralising their colour print volume into one big press to achieve the best running costs. However there is a need for a queue busting A4 colour printer for walk in work, proofing and special media, e.g. transfer paper. It makes no sense to job interrupt a long print run and risk down time for a few speciality media prints. Often the faster kit has running temperatures that challenge transfer papers the most. What we want is more up time and will buy some dedicated kit. The CSMA team is running a CSN Summer Camp to case study new kit throughout July and August and want to beta test some appropriate kit to feature in our next issue. Our thanks to Colin from Box Co for once again delivering a service over and above our Memo expectations. We all need trade print specialist suppliers for the sort of jobs we really can’t undertake in-house. Saying no to our most important customers is never going to help repeat business. Saying yes to enquiries for ‘print specials’ will secure your customer base for the profitable print products you produce in your daily stride. Our challenge was to supply quality presentation packaging for a Championship season ticket card and fixture list. The job has to be mailed under normal postage so size really was important. Investing a small amount in bespoke samples has upped our creditability and can do the same for you when you surround yourself with professional trade print suppliers. Does your embroidery or garment supplies company deal in hospitality wear? If your answer to this question is no; then why not? ETC Supplies has found that many companies overlook this hugely growing market as they think that it isn’t right for them. Hospitality wear is a huge industry, encompassing everything from aprons to shirts to specialist items. Of course, most hospitality clients wish to have their branding embroidered or printed on to the garments – which opens up a whole new world of earning potential. One of the best things about this side of the garment and embroidery market is that it isn’t saturated – and of course that it is much more profitable than your average t-shirt selling! ETC Supplies have found that big hospitality companies make great clients. Via their customers, they have been able to supply many of these companies with a whole range of hospitality wear, beautifully branded with logos, promotional images and staff names. Some of the biggest hospitality clients have hundreds of employees, equating to an awful lot of branded polo shirts, ties, trousers and chef whites! In addition to these big hospitality clients, this market will also allow your company to work with pubs and cafes, butchers, bakeries, grocery shops, food delivery drivers, snack vans.... the list is almost endless! Often these customers will be delightfully easy to work with, and will come back to you again and again with repeat orders. If you’re thinking about getting into this side of the industry, then ETC Supplies can make the process even easier for you. They supply a huge range of high quality garments and need no minimum order quantity. They’re also able to supply ready made embroidery and screen print patches which means that you will be able to provide your hospitality customers with the branded garments they want easily and cost effectively. Sound like something you’d like to find out more about? The ETC Supplies team would be happy to talk to you about how to make this growing area of the market work for your company. You can reach them on 0141 550 1188 or via the website at www.etcsupplies.co.uk.

Below Par “How was your game, dear?” asked Jack’s wife Tracy. “Well, I was hitting pretty well, but my eyesight’s gotten so bad I couldn’t see where the ball went,” he answered. “But you’re 75 years old, Jack!” explained his wife, “Why don’t you take my brother Scott along?” “But he’s 85 and doesn’t play golf anymore,” protested Jack. “But he’s got perfect eyesight. He would watch the ball for you,” Tracy pointed out. The next day Jack teed off with Scott looking on. Jack swung and the ball disappeared down the middle of the fairway. “Do you see it?” asked Jack. “Yes,” Scott answered. “Well, where is it?” yelled Jack, peering off into the distance. “I forgot.”

Horse Play A sales guy is reading his paper when his wife walks up behind him and smacks him on the back of the head with a frying pan. He asks, “What was that for?” She says, “I found a piece of paper in your pocket with ‘Magnificent Maureen’ written on it.” He says, “Well, honey, remember last week when I went to the races? ‘Magnificent Maureen’ was the name of the horse I went there to bet on.” She shrugs and walks away. Three days later he’s reading his paper when she walks up behind him and smacks him on the back of the head again with the frying pan. He asks, “What was that for?” She answers, “Your horse called.”

Got your number Three men were at a bar discussing about coincidences. The first man said, “ My wife was reading A Tale of two cities” and she gave birth to twins” “That’s funny”, the second man remarked, “my wife was reading ‘The three musketeers’ and she gave birth to triplets” The third man shouted, “Oh no, I have to rush home!” When asked what the problem was, he exclaimed, “ When I left the house, my wife was reading The Dirty Dozen”!!!

The Experiment Four worms were placed into four separate jars. The first worm was put into a jar of alcohol. The second worm was put into a jar of cigarette smoke. The third worm was put into a jar of sperm. The fourth worm was put into a jar of soil. After one day: The first worm - dead Second worm - dead Third worm - dead Fourth worm - alive Lesson: As long as you drink, smoke and have sex, you won’t get worms.

24hrs to tango Morris returns from the doctor and tells his wife that the doctor has told him he has only 24 hours to live. Given the prognosis, Morris asks his wife for sex. Naturally, she agrees, so they make love. About 6 hrs later, Morris goes to his wife and says, ‘Honey, you know I now have only 18 hrs to live. Could we please do it one more time?’ Of course, the wife agrees, and they do it again. Later, as the man gets into bed, he looks at his watch and realises that he now has only 8 hrs left. He touches his wife’s shoulder and asks, ‘Honey, please... just one more time before I die.’ She says, ‘Of course, Dear,’ and they make love for the third time. After this session, the wife rolls over and falls to sleep. Morris, however, worried about his impending death, tosses and turns, until he’s down to 4 more hours. He taps his wife, who rouses. ‘Honey, I have only 4 more hours. Do you think we could...’ At this point the wife sits up and says, ‘Listen Morris, I have to get up in the morning... you don’t.

Brave Bloke A salesman went into a dentist and said “How much will it cost to have 2 teeth taken out” “£90” said the dentist “That’s ridiculous” said the man. I could lose the anaesthetic and it would cost £60” “that’s still too expensive, said the man “If I don’t use any anaesthesia I could knock the price down to £20”. Still too much” said the man. Well one of my students can do it for £10” said the dentist “Perfect” said the man “book my wife in for next Tuesday”.

Savings Plan A couple, both age 76, went to a sex therapist’s office. The doctor asked, ‘What can I do for you?’ The man said, ‘Will you watch us have sexual intercourse?’ The doctor looked puzzled, but agreed. When the couple finished, the doctor said, ‘There’s nothing wrong with the way you have intercourse,’ and charged them £50. This happened several weeks in a row. The couple would make an appointment, have intercourse with no problems, pay the doctor, then leave. Finally the doctor asked, ‘Just exactly what are you trying to find out?’ The old man said, ‘We’re not trying to find out anything. She’s married and we can’t go to her house, I’m married and we can’t go to my house. The Holiday Inn charges £90; the Hilton charges £108. We do it here for £50 and I get £75 back from Bupa.

Fitted Up A policeman walks into a printer’s and asks to have three posters printed, the counter staff replies “No problem at all officer, what size would you like them” to which the policeman says “A0, A0, A0”.

Fork Benders What is it called if you have a country full of Gellers. A Uri-Nation!

Taking Care Of The Gorilla A small Wild Animal Park acquired a very rare species of gorilla, but she was difficult to handle and moody. The park vet discovered that the gorilla was in heat, but there were no male gorillas available. The park administration, thinking about how to handle the problem, noticed Joe Salesman canvassing the office declaring he would do anything to help, and approached him with a proposition. The administration asked salesman Joe if he would be willing to satisfy the gorilla for £100. Joe Bob said he’d have to think about that one. The following day, he told the park administration and said he would do it, but only under three conditions: ‘I don’t want to have to kiss her.’ ‘You must never tell anyone about this.’ And last but not least: ‘You’ve gotta give me a week to come up with the hundred pounds.

Foul Mouthed Bird Fred received a parrot for his birthday. This parrot was fully grown with a bad attitude and worse vocabulary. Every other word was an expletive. Those that weren’t expletives were, to say the least, rude. Fred tried hard to change the bird’s attitude and was constantly saying polite words, playing soft music, anything he could think of to try and set a good example. Nothing worked. He yelled at the bird and the bird got worse. He shook the bird and the bird got more angry and more rude. Finally, in a moment of desperation, Fred put the parrot in the freezer, for a few moments he heard the bird squawking and kicking and screaming-then suddenly there was quiet. Fred was frightened that he might have actually hurt the bird and quickly opened the freezer door. The parrot calmly stepped out onto Fred’s extended arm and said: ‘I’m sorry that I might have offended you with my language and actions and ask for your forgiveness. I will endeavour to correct my behaviour.’ Fred was astounded at the bird’s change in attitude, and was just about to ask what had made such a drastic change, when the parrot continued: ‘May I ask what the chicken did?’

Two Yanks in a bar There was a man sitting at a bar, and he looks over at the gentleman sitting next to him and says, “Hey, you look familiar. Are you from around here?” The man answers, “Yeah, I live down the street.” “No kidding?” says the first man, “Well, so do I. And hey, you look about my age. Where did you go to high school?” “Oh I went to Francis Lewis over on Utopia. Graduated in ‘66. How ‘bout you?” “Get out. I went to Francis Lewis. And I graduated in ‘66, too.” “Where’d you go to college?” “Beloit, in Wisconsin.”

“No way! I went to Beloit too. What dorm?” “Kevin Sullivan dorm.” “Sullivan? You’re not going to believe this . . .” Joe the bartender walks over, and the first guy says, “Joe, you won’t believe it in a million years. This guy went to the same high school as me, graduated the same year I did, and went to the same college. We were even in the same dorm. Isn’t that amazing?” Joe looks at them both and says, “Yeah, that’s just plain amazing.” A third man comes in and says, “Hey Joe. What’s new?” Joe says, “Not much. The Johnson twins are drunk again.”

How to give a cat a pill. 1. Pick up the cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat’s mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow. 2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process. 3. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten. 4. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws, ignore growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold cat’s head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat’s throat vigorously. 5. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

Judge: Haven’t I seen you before?

6. Wrap cat in a large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with cat’s head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of a drinking straw, force cat’s mouth open with pencil and blow down straw. 7. Check label to make sure pill is not harmful to humans, drink a beer to take away the taste. Apply Band-Aid to spouse’s forearm and remove blood from the carpet with soap and water. 8. Tie the little angel’s front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of the dining table. Find heavy pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Be rough about it. Hold head vertical and pour 2 pints of water down cat’s throat to wash down pill. 9. Consume remainder of scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the A&E, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill from your eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order a new table. 10. Arrange for RSPCA to collect the mutant cat from hell and ring local pet shop to see whether they have any hamsters.

Time and motion If you have a miserable manager then this is a good one. Three members of an investment bank: a secretary, an associate and a manager, are walking through a park on their way to lunch when they discover an ancient old antique oil lamp. They rub it and a genie comes out in a huge puff of grey-blue smoke. The genie says, ‘I usually grant only three wishes, so I’ll give each of you just one.’ Me first! Me first!’ says the secretary. I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world!’ Poof! She’s gone. In absolute astonishment the associate shouts, ‘Me next! Me next! I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on

Man: Yes, Your Honour…

the beach with my personal masseur, an endless supply of pina coladas and the love of my life.’ Poof! He’s gone. ‘You’re next,’ says the genie to the manager. The Manager calmly says, ‘I want those two back in the office after lunch.

Dear Mum and Dad, Our scoutmaster told us to write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and are worried. We are OK. Only one of our tents and two sleeping bags got washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Chad when it happened. Oh yes, please call Chad’s mother and tell her he is OK. He can’t write because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search and rescue jeeps. It was neat. We never would have found him in the dark if it hadn’t been for the lightning. Scoutmaster Walt got mad at Chad for going on a hike alone without telling anyone. Chad said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably didn’t hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas can will blow up? The wet wood didn’t burn, but one of the tents did. Also some of our clothes. David is going to look weird until his hair grows back. We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Walt gets the car fixed. It wasn’t his fault about the wreck. The brakes worked OK when we left. Scoutmaster Walt said that a car that old you have to expect something to break down; that’s probably why he can’t get insurance. We think it’s a neat car. He doesn’t care if we get it dirty, and if it’s hot, sometimes he lets us ride on the fenders. It gets pretty hot with 10 people in a car. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the highway patrolman stopped and talked to us. Scoutmaster Walt is a neat guy. Don’t worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he is teaching Terry how to drive on the mountain roads where there isn’t any

…I taught your daughter how to play the drums.

traffic. All we ever see up there are logging trucks. This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out in the lake. Scoutmaster Walt wouldn’t let me because I can’t swim, and Chad was afraid he would sink because of his cast, so he let us take the canoe across the lake. It was great. You can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood. Scoutmaster Walt isn’t crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn’t even get mad about the life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the car so we are trying not to cause him any trouble. Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Dave dove in the lake and cut his arm, we got to see how a tourniquet works. Wade and I threw up, but Scoutmaster Walt said it probably was just food poisoning from the leftover chicken. He said they got sick that way with food they ate in prison. I’m so glad he got out and became our scoutmaster. He said he sure figured out how to get things done better while he was doing his time. I have to go now. We are going to town to mail our letters. Don’t worry about anything. We are fine. Love Ben

Stop press… Hi Peter, Glad you liked the last couple of jokes I sent through. One of the other guys here wanted to get a bit of fame so he came up with a few jokes of his own. 1) How do you make a paperweight? Put a red light in front of it! 2) Why did the printer have so many fillings? Because of his staple diet! 3) Why did the printer keep telling jokes to the folding machine? So it would crease up! Cheers Benji Pelard Kall Kwik Twickenham
