This is the month when traditionally we print professionals move up a gear to wind up the rest of the business community into thinking that spring has finally sprung. Those recovering green shoots are blossoming into a blooming festival of colour… when all at once I saw a crowd. A host, of golden print prospects, or was it daffodils? Sorry William, I wandered off there. The point is that positive printing will lead us all out of the gloom and into a brighter climate. When your customers catch you doing something good they will all want to join in with their own printed promotions to kick-start the recovery. Start with some special offers for the two Saints days this month and do something funny for Red Nose Day on the 18th. Maybe make a donation for any of your customers found blowing up their relations when ordering printed posters etc. Focus on Imaging Show is at the NEC 7-9th March followed by Sign and Digital in April and Northprint in May, all detailed inside this issue. I gazed, and gazed, but little thought. What wealth the show to me had brought . Whoops, poetry set in again; better go before the March madness takes over completely. Have a great March Peter, dances with daffodils, Foulkes

HolloGraphics makes wide-format white with its Roland VersaCAMM VS-640

When Dan Rye and Alex Holloway decided to enter a new business area seven years ago, opting initially for sign making, they chose a combination print and cut solution from Roland in their subsequent step into wide format ink-jet production. Winchester based HolloGraphics has now moved up to a VersaCAMM VS-640 primarily so that the company can incorporate white ink in its vast range of applications, from labels and stickers through to vehicle and window graphics. Five years ago HolloGraphics invested in a Roland print and cut system which enabled the company to move up from smaller thermal transfer output to wide format applications. This addition opened new doors to Rye and Holloway who have seen their business grow steadily as the machine was used to create an increasingly diverse range of contour cut printed applications including vehicle liveries and window films as well as nested labels, stickers and decals. Wanting to add value to the jobs being produced at HolloGraphics, Rye returned to Roland with a view to purchasing a new generation machine which would provide more versatility and faster throughput at a sensible investment price. Working with specialist distributor, Spire Digital Solutions, he was attracted by the idea of being able to integrate white into the company’s applications, plus the possibility of incorporating metallic shades. “We produce a considerable amount of window graphics using static cling specialist films, for both the retail and domestic markets. The fact that we can achieve stunning results using a relatively low cost wide format ink-jet printer appealed enormously,” states Rye. “The Roland VersaCAMM VS-640’s ability to output highly opaque white has been a huge benefit to HolloGraphics as we can produce special and seasonal graphics just using this colour as well as over and under printing general applications onto clear materials.” The quality of output, colour accuracy and contour cutting were also strong reasons behind Rye and Holloway’s decision to invest in a new machine from

Roland. “We’ve been a customer of the company for several years and our original print and cut machine has never let us down, giving us flawless performance for half a decade,” explains Holloway. “When we decided the time had come to upgrade to a newer solution, it was logical for us to return to Roland for our next system.” Speed of turn round is crucial for HolloGraphics and the company’s busy web site features an on-line store with the opportunity for customers to buy stock items or order specials. Innovative products range from decorative and seasonal stickers, decals for motor sports, window and body graphics for vehicles plus diverse retail and domestic applications. The addition of the Roland VersaCAMM VS-640 has seen throughput increase as its fast print speeds and highly accurate cutting capabilities has enabled the company to keep pace with the increasing numbers of orders being received for all types of job. Decorative and novelty labels and stickers are complemented by colour accurate health and safety signs which need to conform with mandatory regulations, and the company is able to produce stock items which can be ordered easily and quickly on-line for fast turn-round. Ideal for the production of large and small contour cut applications, the VS-640 is particularly well suited to label and decal production with its fine tolerances enabling printed material to be laminated, if required, and put back into the machine for subsequent cutting. Similarly, very accurate displays can be cut to intricate shapes in varying sizes, with precision results and absolute consistency guaranteed across the full width and length of the material. The high quality print generated from the 1.62m machine is a result of the latest printheads combined with Roland Intelligent Pass Control Technology which produces variable dots for smooth graduations and strong, solid colours. HolloGraphics particularly values the addition of white as a complement to the system’s six colour inks and the inclusion of metallic ink will enable the company to add special colours and finishes to applications. “The addition of the Roland VersaCAMM VS-640 was instrumental in enabling Hollographics to bring business and residential customers their own white Christmas,” concludes Rye. “But the versatility of output from this system overall is proving itself across a range of applications, from the smallest of industrial and decorative labels, through colourful window graphics to tough, outdoor durable vehicle liveries.” The VS-640 was supplied and installed by Spire Digital Solutions, based in Trowbridge, Wiltshire. Concentrating on Roland DG’s printing, cutting and engraving solutions, the company also provides a wide range of accessories plus materials and software solutions. Further information about HolloGraphics is available by contacting dan. rye@hollographics.com, www.hollographics.com. Spire Digital Solutions can be contacted at sales@spire-digital.co.uk.

Pantone announces fashion colours Pantone LLC, an X-Rite company, and the authority on colour and provider of professional colour standards for the design industries, has unveiled the PANTONE Fashion Colour Report for this autumn. The report features the top 10 colours for womens fashion for autumn 2011, along with designer sketches, quotes and headshots, and is available for free download at www.pantone.com/fall2011. The release of the PANTONE Fashion Colour Report coincides with New York Fashion Week. This season’s report also includes the most directional hues for mens fashion. “Designers take a painterly approach to autumn 2011 by artfully combining bright colours with staple neutrals, reminiscent of how an artist would construct a stunning work of art,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. “Much like a painter’s masterpiece, there is a certain romance to this season’s palette.” Taking cues from the great masters, sepia tones of old Hollywood, Chinese opera, cityscapes and countryside, designers are paying close attention to texture, contrast and colour for 2011 – pairing menswear with feminine twists, warm prints with cool metals, incorporating both old and new influences, and creating an intriguing balance between colours. Bamboo 14-0740 a surprising autumn hue, brings a warm, exotic flavor to the season. Like a filtered sunset of an autumn evening, Bamboo is a standout yellow with a subtle green undertone. This dappled shade pairs dramatically with several of the top 10, including Phlox, Teal and Honeysuckle. Radiant Emberglow 17-1547, a traditional

autumnal tone, emanating the warmth of a glowing fire – the perfect panacea to the crisp air of autumn. Combine Emberglow with Coffee Liqueur for a classic look, or with Honeysuckle for something a bit more retro. Add a spark with shoes or a handbag in Emberglow, or perhaps a patterned scarf combining purpled Phlox or Deep Teal. Offering a sense of continuity from spring, dynamic Honeysuckle 18-2120 adds a bold punctuation point. This playful, reddish pink works with any other colour in the palette, especially staples like Coffee Liqueur and Nougat. To add some intensity, pair it with complementary Bamboo. Flirtatious and festive, Honeysuckle produces a healthy glow – great for cosmetics and holiday soirees. Phlox 19-2820 a magical, deep purple with a hint of mystery, is an outstanding statement when worn on its own. Add Phlox to this season’s neutrals to create a bit of drama, or combine it with Cedar, Deep Teal or Coffee Liqueur for something extraordinary. To add even more excitement, pair Phlox with Honeysuckle or Bamboo against a Cedar background – a

combination inspired by Mother Nature. Evoking the freshness of a cool mist in a dark forest, Cedar 16-0526 is a versatile, mid-tone neutral green. It is a natural with Deep Teal, and sophisticated and timeless with Phlox or Orchid Hush. Deep Teal 19-4914, a strong, blue-toned green, suggests ocean depths and the colour of the sky as daylight descends into darkness. A great standard when used with Cedar, its colourwheel neighbour, Deep Teal is also a unique counterpoint to Honeysuckle. Consumers continue to add stability to their wardrobes with neutrals. Rich, decadent Coffee Liqueur 18-0930 brings a sense of elegance to autumn, and is a savoury alternative to basic black. A deliciously warm camel tan, Nougat 16-1320 is tastefully embellished by Phlox, Emberglow or Honeysuckle. Orchid Hush, 13-3805 a unique tone of gray with complex orchid undertones, blends well with any other colour in the palette. Quarry 15-4305, a reliable medium gray, remains, as always, a practical, dependable staple. The colours featured in the PANTONE Fashion Colour Report are culled from the PANTONE FASHION + HOME Colour System, the most widely used and recognised colour standards system in the world. Each season, Pantone surveys the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to collect feedback on prominent collection colours, colour inspiration and colour philosophy. This information is used to create the PANTONE Fashion Colour Report, which serves as a reference tool throughout the year for fashion enthusiasts, reporters and retailers. More information is available at www.pantone.com, www.xrite.com

Konica minolta wins ‘line of the year’ Konica Minolta has been awarded the coveted ‘MFP Line of the Year’ by Buyers Lab Inc, (BLI) the leading independent test and evaluation organisation for business equipment. In the face of stiff competition Konica Minolta’s outstanding bizhub line of colour and black and white multifunctionals won glowing plaudits from BLI testers. “Time and again, Konica Minolta’s line has proven itself in the areas that matter most to end users – reliability, ease of use, productivity and image quality,” said George Mikolay, Senior Product Editor at BLI, A3/Copier MFPs. “With outstanding performances in these key areas, along with attractive pricing and robust feature sets across its colour and monochrome lines, it became readily apparent that Konica Minolta is the vendor to beat for 2011.” BLI’s ‘Line of the Year’ is awarded once a year to the manufacturer whose product line is determined to be the best overall in its category based on the cumulative test results of all models tested in BLI’s rigorous two month laboratory evaluation. Among the many factors considered are reliability, image quality, productivity, ease of use, scanning, a host of connectivity attributes and overall value. Also considered was the breadth of Konica Minolta’s line and its ability to provide quality products suitable to a broad spectrum of customer needs, from low volume to high volume.

In the past year, Konica Minolta won more BLI MFP ‘Picks’ than any other manufacturer with six awards to business colour models alone in virtually every speed range from 22 to 65 pages per minute. All colour models that BLI tested were found extremely strong in terms of reliability and productivity. The testers at BLI were also particularly impressed by the image quality the devices consistently achieved, calling it a “big differentiator for Konica Minolta”. In the monochrome A3 MFP range, BLI did not test any Konica Minolta A3 printing system without giving it an award. Once more, it was the device reliability that especially struck BLI testers, with all Konica Minolta MFPs analysed in BLI’s ‘real-world job stream tests’ performing above average. Common to all Konica Minolta winners is excellent ease of use and comprehensive security measures. Third party software developers can also integrate their document management and cost accounting solutions with the devices via bizhub Extended Solution Technology (bEST). “All of the models BLI tested this year typically offer strong feature sets to boot, making them exceptional value for buyers,” Mikolay stated. “For us, BLI’s highly coveted ‘MFP Line of the Year’ Award means nothing less than the ultimate accolade,” says Jonathan Millbank, Director of Sales for Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK). “Over the past few years, our MFPs have been recognised as top level colour and monochrome devices by BLI. This strikingly illustrates Konica Minolta’s total commitment to excellence, providing exceptional performance and quality throughout and across our entire MFP range.” www.konicaminolta.co.uk

SDC Reprographics was established as a dyeline printer in Sutton, Surrey, in the late 1940s, when its main function was to reproduce architectural plans. Several decades later, in the early 1980s, the company expanded its offering by acquiring a black and white, A4 digital printing device and later diversified to a wide range of colour digital and wide format work. Today, a large amount of the company’s work comes from local businesses, architectural firms and construction companies, although it also has a number of well known high street brands on its customer list. And, as it is situated on a main route into London, SDC Reprographics has a lot of walk in orders for leaflets, brochures and booklets. While still plotting CAD drawings for its architectural and engineering clients, it also offers a range of packages for exhibition graphics. Julie Carter took over the business in 2005 and has spent a great deal of time and effort over the past five years strategically expanding it. As part of this process, Julie investigated the latest wide format flatbed printers with roll to roll options to replace the company’s previous roll fed machine. “With our old roll fed wide format device, although we could print banners, board graphics had to be printed on vinyl and hand mounted, which meant our orders for board graphics took a long time to produce,” says Julie. “When the time came for an upgrade, we decided to look for a hybrid model that would allow us to continue printing onto vinyl and banner media, but also directly onto board and other substrates including diabond and acrylics. Fujifilm’s Acuity Advance perfectly fitted the bill so we went to Fujifilm’s Broadstairs facility to test the device.” After a successful series of tests, SDC Reprographics placed an order for the Acuity Advance HD 2545 digital inkjet printer, and expanded its ground floor production area to house the device. Julie continues: “The installation took place without a hitch and Fujifilm provided us with all the necessary training. Since then, we have seen time savings of up to 75% with a large number of jobs, as we now have the ability to print directly onto banners and board with no drying time. This not only enables us to offer our customers much shorter turnaround times, but also allows us to be more competitive.”

The Acuity Advance HD 2545 incorporates greyscale print head technology to produce near photographic quality print - unrivalled in the market today. It prints at a speed of 22m2/hr in production mode and 15m2/hr in high quality mode with an additional white ink option complementing the CMYK colour set. As part of the ongoing business development strategy, Julie approached Fujifilm with a view to upgrading SDC’s colour digital device. After considering SDC’s production requirements, Fujifilm suggested the DocuColor 7002 digital printer in conjunction with the Duplo Digital System 445 booklet maker. “We looked at a number of the key players in the digital printing market at Ipex,” says Julie. “The DocuColor 7002, however, was unique in that it can duplex 300gsm card – which was one of our requirements. Fujifilm listened carefully to what we wanted to achieve and also suggested an offline finishing solution. The Duplo device slotted in nicely with the DocuColor 7002 and, as Fujifilm had already proved to be a reliable partner with our first investment, the decision to order from them again wasn’t a hard one to make.” The DocuColor 7002 is an all in one digital colour press that can handle a wide range of stock, produce high quality output and offer advanced, versatile finishing options. It has an output speed of up to 70ppm on all stock, with weights ranging between 60gsm-300gsm. Duplo’s Digital System 445 is an economical booklet making device for digital colour print that cuts, creases and makes booklets in one pass. It has 15 different programmes that offer ‘load and go’ unattended operation, including side trimming, producing CD size booklets and square spine finishes. Julie concludes: “Thanks to Fujifilm, we can offer our customers the highest quality print in very competitive turnaround times which we are still managing to improve on an almost daily basis. And, with the time we are now able to save with our Acuity Advance on a large number of jobs, not only can we take on extra work, but the cost savings are huge. We are delighted to have found a partner that shares our ethos of openness and honesty and trust that this relationship will continue in the future.” www.fujifilm.co.uk/gs

Hybrid to unveil Mimaki Jfx-1615plus at Sign and digital UK 2011 This year’s Sign and Digital UK show will see the unveiling of the new Mimaki JFX-1615plus by their exclusive UK and Ireland distributer, Hybrid Services Ltd. Already an award winner following its international launch, the Mimaki JFX-1615plus shares the same fast, high quality LED UV curable ink technology of its big brother, the JFX1631plus; but with a bed size of 1.6m x 1.5m it provides a true flatbed solution for companies with a smaller format print requirement. Mimaki’s new JFXplus series features a post-curing unit as standard that enables printing of up to 23.6m2/h — a top speed that is nearly twice as fast as its predecessor. Additionally, a roll unit has been developed to boost efficiency and productivity when printing on flexible substrates, and printing capacity is maximised through the UV LED system requiring no warm up time. Hybrid’s national sales manager, John de la Roche, highlights the benefits of the JFX-1615plus to Sign and Digital UK visitors, commenting that, “The

JFXplus has the ability to print onto non coated substrates up to a thickness of 50mm, and the added advantage of having two ink options (hard and flexible UV curable inks) to suit different applications really opens up its creative potential.” “The new Mimaki flatbed is a versatile product with the capacity to produce high quality images and even 3pt text. Couple this with the affordability of the smaller model Mimaki JFX-1615plus and its ideal position in the market for more industrial, bespoke applications, and you can see why we are so keen for it to be showcased at this year’s Sign and Digital UK exhibition.” The new flatbed will feature on Hybrid’s stand – right at the entrance to the halls – alongside their substantial range of other UV, outdoor durable and textile printer and cutter solutions. For information on these or any other Mimaki products, contact Hybrid on 01270 501900 or visit www.hybridservices.co.uk.

BooKBiNdERS Add TRiMMER To PUR BiNdiNG liNE booKbinders of London, the North London based complany, who have reported a 200% increase in revenue since the acquisition of their DPB-500 PUR perfect binder in 2009, have seen demand grow from all corners of their business and looked to become even more efficient with their turnaround times. The company are seen as the ‘go to’ company for thesis binding in London, and have expanded their services to include an online photo book service, specialist trade binding for local printers, high end London agency business and are due to launch a new school yearbook web to print offering in early 2011. “The PUR binder has become the heart beat of our operation. When we purchased that product it was all about peace of mind and quality of product. We are now looking at our efficiencies.” Explains Managing Director, Ian Bailey. “In order to finish a quality bound book, you need accurate pre trim, quality bind and a final trim operation to finish the book off. The trimming aspect can become quite labour intense and puts a hell of a lot of pressure on our guillotine operator.” The decision for Bookbinders of London was to either purchase another guillotine and employ a new operator to eradicate the pressure in their processes, or look toward an offline auto book trimmer. “We knew Duplo were launching their relationship and new product with Challenge at IPEX and we were eager to see how the machine compared with the binder. We were very impressed with the build of the Challenge, it seemed like a ‘production’ level machine (with heavy duty hoppers) plus it needed less babysitting than other machines out there with loading and unloading being far easier.” Comments Ian.

“Of course our relationship with Duplo was a major factor. They have been true partners with the integration of the binder into our business, and their trainers and engineers know our business well. That was important to us.” Duplo launched their relationship with Challenge at IPEX 2010, selling the CMT-130 and CMT-330 to compliment their existing hotmelt and PUR perfect binder range. And the team at Bookbinders have been very impressed at the early stages with their new CMT-130. “It has made us far more automated. Our guillotine operator has been freed up, and it has allowed us to be more flexible and responsive to our customers. Costs are also down as we have less labour involved in each job and no need for costly overtime, which was common when time pressures became too much.” “Also, rather than work being backed up on the guillotine to be finished, the books are moving more freely through the bindery and we can turn around PUR books ‘while you wait’.” The CMT-130 is a single knife auto book trimmer, with 99 job program memories and with the ability to be able to finish multiple books in the same pass; with productivity of up to 500 finished books per hour. Size changing is less than 10 seconds with no tools involved and can trim up to 60mm thick books. Duplo’s DPB-500 PUR binder compliments the Challenge with a 30 second set up, with no tools, controlling everything (including the PUR) from one control panel, with production up to 525 cycles per hour. Ian concludes “The Challenge Trimmer is the type of product we will look back at one day and say ‘how did we cope without it?’. I think the PUR binder and the Trimmer are part of the same family, I don’t understand anyone who would consider purchasing a PUR binder without a matching auto book knife trimmer such as this; you need it to fully Duplo UK 01372 478205, www.duplouk.co.uk

Roland’s VersaCAMM VS-640 is the instant choice for QuickPrint SW

When Danny and Richard Frayne of Exeter based QuickPrint SW accepted an invitation from Avon Graphic Technologies to an open day at Roland DG’s new Creative Centre in Clevedon, they were so impressed they made the instant decision to Danny Frayne (centre), managing director of QuickPrint invest in a new wide formatSW and his son, Richard (right), are pictured with Duncan Macdonald of Avon Graphic Technologies printer. Eager to explore the opportunities that Roland could offer, and following a comprehensive demonstration of the VersaCAMM VS-640 print and cut solution with metallic and white inks, they placed an order on the spot for this machine. A long established print company, QuickPrint SW has nearly reached its half century, having been founded back in 1961 and remaining a family business since it started. Originally concentrating on offset litho production, as trends and technologies changed so the company has extended its services, broadening its portfolio of capabilities with continual, shrewd investment into the latest equipment. Already highly regarded by its customers as a supplier of small and wide format digital services as well as litho jobs covering all types of application, QuickPrint has moved forward from traditional commercial print, offering sublimation for promotional and garment production, plus displays, canvases and CAD/GIS applications. Recognising the added value of being able to offer contour cut signs, displays and labels which include metallic and white elements, the VersaCAMM VS-640 with its generous 1.62m width, renowned Eco-Sol Max inks and compact footprint was an instant choice. For Roland partner, Avon Graphic Technologies, the invitation to the manufacturer’s newly opened Creative Centre attracted a surprisingly high number of interested customers. Originally estimating there might be a dozen companies wanting to attend, the 30 acceptances included Danny and Richard Frayne from QuickPrint SW who admitted that it was a last minute decision, but one they certainly haven’t regretted. “The moment we saw the Roland VersaCAMM VS-640 put through its paces, we knew this was the machine we needed to move QuickPrint SW forward in the market-place,” states Danny Frayne. QuickPrint SW’s increasing demand from its growing customer base for wide format production necessitated more durable output for greater diversity of end applications. Additionally, the exacting tolerances of the integrated cutting system in the VS-640 means that the company can now produce labels, stickers and decals. Using the variable data element in Roland VersaWorks production software, which is included with all its printers, jobs can even contain customised text and graphics as part of a production run. Duncan Macdonald, sales manager of Avon Graphics, comments: “QuickPrint SW is a great example of a former litho specialist which has made the transition successfully into wide format print. Using the combination of careful investment, experience and forethought, and establishing where new market opportunities lie, shows how well the addition of the VersaCAMM VS-640 will benefit its existing customers and attract new clients. Increasingly, commercial printers investing in wide format want versatility as well as size and this is proving to be the case with customers moving into digital proofing, prototyping and label production.” Designed to be a cost effective but tough, compact integrated print and cut solution, the VersaCAMM VS series also features Roland OnSupport online diagnostics. This enables users to run jobs unattended knowing that they will be notified automatically via e-mail when an application is finished or if the machine needs attention, such as when it is running low on ink. For more information: Danny Frayne, QuickPrint (South West), tel. 01392 271739, e-mail info@quickprint.co.uk; Duncan McDonald, Avon Graphic Technologies, tel: 0117 929 2742, e-mail duncan@avongraphics.co.uk

DUPLO lauNCHES HIGH SPEED CUTTER

Duplo has launched a new desktop card cutter, to add to its growing family of digital finishing solutions. The Ultra Cut 130 is the “the fastest business card cutter in its class” and is ideal for cutting an array of digital print applications including business cards, postcards and photo cards. The Ultra Cut 130 is capable of producing 130 business cards per minute despite its small footprint; meaning 500 cards can be finished in under four minutes. As with all of Duplo’s machines automated precision is the ethos of the machine with no manual adjustments required and within 0.2mm accuracy. The machine can handle up to 350gsm. With 12 job memories available, the user is able to create and recall recurring jobs with ease as well as adjust card length, top margin and width of the gutter cut through the simple control panel. The machine also features a first cut mark sensor, meaning that the machine is ‘load and go’ and extremely accurate, regardless of any shift with the print. Optional scoring and perforating modules are available with the Ultra Cut 130, and changing

these is a quick and tool-less operation. The machine features a 25mm stack, with a 500 card receiving tray and can accept SRA4 paper, meaning you can simply cut SRA3 in half with a simple dead cut. “We have an extraordinary range of multifinishers with the likes of the DC-615 and DC-645 and the introduction of the Ultra Cut 130 means we have a perfect entry level machine for our range. With a short run of business cards, there is a high labour time and cost knock on, with many cuts and turns needed to finish business cards. The work is the same whether it is 3,000 business cards or 500. This coupled with the extra machine set up required to offline perforate, which you can do inline with the Ultra Cut 130, means this is a machine that helps you make the best use of your time in the bindery.” comments Peter Jolly at Duplo UK The product is sold exclusively via Duplo’s dealer channel and was launched at their “Widen Your Opportunities” Dealer Conference at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Birmingham on February 10th. The machine will be available in March. For more information visit www.duplouk.com.

Sharp announces world’s first MFPs with finger swipe touch control Sharp has announced the world’s first MFPs with a finger swipe touch control interface, as part of its continuing drive to improve productivity. The new MX-2610N and MX3110N feature a 10.1” control panel, on which users can touch icons then tap, flick or slide a finger to access every document, function and setting. Sharp believes that the technology will revolutionise the way in which people interact with MFPs, just as it did for cell phones. “This type of control interface is truly intuitive. That’s why it has become so popular with other devices,” said Marc Brion, product marketing manager for information systems hardware. “You don’t need to work out how to do something – just touch the panel and slide your finger. For many people, it will be a very familiar experience.” The MX-2610N and MX-3110N were designed for maximum ease of use and a minimum learning curve. The control screen, for example, with its large, clear text and icons for controlling every single feature and function can be tilted up or down for easy viewing. Scanned pages can be previewed on the screen as 1 page, 3D or thumbnail images, and entirely controlled by the finger swipe interface. The user simply touches and slides to rotate them, change their order, add or delete pages, and then print, file or distribute as required. The ‘user experience’ is fully customisable, too. Individuals can create personalised home screens on the control panel, giving them front page access to the tools and applications they use most often, set against a choice of seven background styles. Just as finger swipe technology led to an explosive growth in ‘apps’ for smart phones, its use on MFPs is expected to open the door to an increasingly wide variety of applications and new work habits. One example is the MFPs’ ability to run third party Sharp OSA (Open System Architecture) applications to streamline and automate everyday tasks, such as scanning documents directly to appropriate destinations. But that’s just the start. Within months, it will be possible to enhance the new MFPs with full internet access and Cloud connectivity. Internet access will allow the browsing and printing out web content such as maps, instructions, research material and photos, without the need for a PC. Cloud connectivity will let businesses reach beyond the firewall to run Software as a Service (SaaS) applications developed by Sharp’s Technology Partners. Sharp believes that this is the start of a new age for MFPs. www.sharp.co.uk

CSMA saved us money

Take a closer look at your insurance costs

here in the CSN office we are always pleased to hear from our readers, and we received an email from Mark at Print-Trek in Upminster which we are pleased to share with you. “I had the lovely Abigail from Lucas Fettes phone me the other day and after saying how I was mentioned in Copy Shop News a month or so ago we got talking about insurance again. It turns out that I don’t need an alarm system and the dedicated phone line so now my savings have increased even more!. Alarm System Maintenance - £340 per year Dedicated Phone line for alarm - £192 per year Savings on insurance premium - £750 per year. Total savings per year - £1282 If only I had a bit of space in the shop I could look at getting a new machine but wifey has made it quite clear – no more toys!! See you soon Mark” You can wait your turn for Abi to offer you a non obligatory comparison, or to start saving earlier get a bit proactive and contact the Lucas Fettes CSMA insurance team on phone and email: 020 7413 0999 or Abi.Rees@lucasfettes. co.uk. Go on what’s the worst that can happen? Check you are covered for everything you want and that you are not paying for something you don’t need. We did, and Maureen has saved an incredible £1675.20 a year for exactly the same cover as with our previous insurer. I wonder how much we could save if we all make the change this year…now that would be an interesting figure! I know that we are all reluctant to make changes to the way that we have always done things — better the devil you know — but having been persuaded to make the move away from our traditional suppliers and join with Lucas Fettes for insurance and Utility Warehouse for utilities (pretty obvious that one!), we are left wondering what we could have saved over the past years, but no looking back, let’s all move forward. It doesn’t take long to fill in a couple of forms and start saving. And finally… I have been asked by the ladies in the CSN office if they can advise Mark’s wife on spending the savings. Apparently you can buy a lot of shoes for £1282.

After the successful introduction of the Signmakers Workshop at last year’s show the team are delighted to announce that it is back, bigger and better for 2011. Paul Hughes of Western Signs & Printing and the popular “Price It Guide”, returns as host to give some of his experience and advice that he has gained from running a successful sign making business for thirteen years. There will be demos throughout the three days on the basics of sign making, a must see for anyone in the sign making industry or anyone who wants to be! Paul says “Last year was the first showing of this feature at Sign & Digital UK where it was really well received. This year it is set to be bigger and better and so will be a big attraction at the show. From feedback last year lots of people wanted tips and advice on fitting vinyl to glass, so I will be doing a demo on how to do that. In addition, last year’s favourites will return including more tips and tricks to help your business grow”. The Panel Swap competition is running again at the 2011 show and more information will follow shortly. The ever popular Adobe seminars are back… Terry Steeley is returning with Adobe to Sign & Digital UK 2011. In this, his ninth year at the event, Terry will showcase the latest Adobe Creative Suite CS5 software through his ‘Creative Suite Essentials’ seminar at the 2011 show. Designed to simplify tired workflows, help you deliver high end results and save money by improving efficiency and preventing costly and unnecessary production errors, this interactive event is essential for designers and production professionals who want to understand the benefits of the most significant features of CS5, including many that remain undocumented. “Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned professional, CS5 offers tools and functionality that will transform your world. I look forward to helping you get to grips with what could become a key element of your work,” commented Terry.

Driven to digital distraction

Perhaps surprisingly one of the calmest places to be is inside a Formula One driver’s head during a Grand Prix according to research. Martin Christie writes…

W

ell, calm is a relative term. What scientists have concluded is that top racing drivers have an ability to focus and prioritise beyond the scale of mere mortals, enabling them to process information input and take appropriate action with incredible efficiency, despite the distractions of an environment full of noise, speed, temperature, vibration, and massively fluctuating g-forces. That and the simple matter of driving an immensely powerful vehicle at speeds approaching 200 miles an hour while lying almost prone in a cramped cockpit with limited visibility. Even the steering wheel, which for most normal car drivers guides the front wheels to the right or to the left, has at least twenty four buttons that have different functions each more or less critical to the performance of the machine. Oh, and if you can handle all that there is the small matter of twenty one other competitors similarly mounted and competing for the same stretch of tarmac for the next two hours. It was an article on this research in a motorsport magazine that prompted my train of thought, matching previous studies on top sportsmen aimed at understanding what makes the truly great, in any field, so special. Traditional wisdom was that it was simply speed of reaction to a situation that singled out the superstars - whether reaction to a starting pistol, a bowler’s ball or a penalty kick. Not so: it’s the ability to instantly filter the irrelevant and concentrate and the essential that gets the job done, however distracting the situation. In cricket it’s the batsman who can ignore the sledging and judge where the ball will strike. In football it’s the goalkeeper who sees through the feint and jumps the right way long before the kick has struck home. In musing on this it struck me how beneficial it would be if we could all be so single minded in our daily lives, and most importantly, at work. Our field of play is equally full of

conflicting distractions, and it is extremely difficult to keep an eye on the ball. Not surprising it is often dropped or kicked into touch. It is a twenty first century challenge that we are all in danger of suffering from so-called information overload, a condition for which few of us are properly trained or prepared. This is not a new concern - issues were raised by psychologists as early as the nineteen sixties, when we only had radio, television and land locked telephones to contend with. It was an issue that concerned NASA when they trained the first astronauts they feared that there might be so much to do in a space capsule in the way of pushing buttons and reading dials at any one time, that even those made of the right stuff might flick the wrong switch at the wrong time. Sensory overload was thought to cause disorientation and lack of responsiveness, conditions with potentially disastrous consequences. In the Copy Shop workspace, mistakes are not normally fatal, but can be costly nevertheless in relative terms. And while we are not lost in space, we are bombarded from all directions with all manner of digital debris threatening to puncture our atmosphere. And the amount of debris has increased rapidly because of the ability of the technology to generate it - whether words, graphics or images, and the inability of any human hand successfully to control it. We receive information, whether we want it or not, from different sources, and at all times while we are accessible, and without any efficient system of filtering the urgent from the ordinary without first viewing the message. Everything is urgent, all has its own priority, like the crying of a baby that demands attention immediately regardless of the scale of the need. So just like the helpless mother who reacts by instinct to the latest and the loudest cry, we tend to chuck any discipline out of the window with the bathwater, even if baby is, in the rush of the moment, included. Research scientists trying to

illustrate the challenge of information overload ironically have to use the example of print as a comparison - like trying to read so many newspapers cover to cover each day. But the beauty of print is that we can chose to pick it up if it appeals to us or put it down when we are bored. We can select the articles on subjects we are interested in, or images we want to view further, and ignore those we chose to regardless of how strident the banner headlines. We can genuinely browse to find the tasty bits. The digital information assault is upon us, in our eyes and in our ears, twenty four seven unless we chose to ignore it, and can unplug all the various devices at home. In the working environment we are also assaulted by all the various noises and messages from the printing machines themselves, most of which, despite being allegedly intelligent, demand constant attention, And then, of course, there are the customers at the counter, bless them, with their mobile phones and their laptops, ipods and assorted hard drives with half of their life story on them. They too are part buried with the same information overload of sensory suffocation, with even less training on how to cope. Does anyone have a system that can cope with these demands? Certainly there are many who claim to have solutions, but they mostly work in calm, clinical environments, devoid of external influence, where ideal solutions are possible. Nor are we about to be buried by this bombardment despite the dire warnings of increased stress, impatience, and forced errors. Humans are by nature adaptable or they would have lost the battle of evolution long ago. The challenge is that the pace of technological development in all directions is just a little to face for the average pedestrain. Most likely, the problems are always going to be one step ahead of the solutions whatever we do. One of the major issues related to

information overload is the often confusing amount of jargon used. All trades traditionally share a certain amount of common terms, but the information technology revolution means a spill over of language to describe things from many sources, and used by many people, with the obvious possibility that they will be only partially understood. Certainly the old adage that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing holds true today, especially as the tidal wave of information risks greater knowledge but less understanding. Even resorting to the web for guidance is not always fruitful as the wizards of Wikipedia can often come up with advice that conflicts or confuses, and the once reliable Google search appears to be increasingly intent on selling you things rather than telling you anything you want to know. Most corporate websites are notoriously difficult to navigate for anything useful as they seem to assume you want to spend most of your day looking at their entire product range, while searching for the one item you actually want to know something about. Frustratingly, in a virtual world that is entirely visual, one of the hardest things to source is often a decent image of a particular product. Top marks for Colour Confidence then for its Jargon Buster A to Z featured on its busy web site, which I am sure will develop to be a useful guide. No matter how sure you are about a term there is no harm in having the definition spelt out in simple terms as a refresher. Certainly a second opinion on an issue never does any harm, so I am reproducing a few to give you a flavour of the short but helpful desciptions. You may know or use the terms, but could you explain exactly what they mean ? I was particularly attracted to Candela per Square Meter – A unit of measurement used to define the brightness intensity of emitted light, such as from a monitor. A

March 2011 | COPY SHOP NEWS | diGiTAl iMAGiNG | 21

comfortable level of brightness is 90–120 Cdm2. For soft proofing purposes this should be set to an equivalent level to that of the light intensity of a viewing light reflecting off the paper print. That’s a good one to wave at a customer next time they tell you the print you’ve just done doesn’t match their lap top screen. Gamut - is the term used to describe the extremities of the range of colours that can be achieved from a device (also dependent on the ink/media used in a printer or a monitor’s brightness level). i.e. the strongest reds, greens, blues, yellows, and darkest black. A ‘large gamut’ device will display or print stronger colours than a device with a smaller colour gamut. That means a twelve colour inkjet printer will print a wider range of colours than a four colour laser copier obviously. Luminance - The intensity of brightness/illumination, as for a monitor. This is measured in Cdm2( see above) A high level of monitor brightness, circa 160-450 Cdm2, extends the contrast of a display. This can be desirable for when viewing a movie but not advantageous for assessing/editing imagery against a reference print. Which explains why your average student who spends more time on his laptop or Utube and watching movies, can’t reproduce a correct colour image without help. My particular favourite - and this will have them falling asleep at the counter or nodding sagely as if they already know that - is Metamerism. ‘Colours with different spectral wavelengths can visually appear identical under some viewing conditions. For example, if the colour of a jacket and trousers match each other under shop lighting, but in day light they do not match each other, this is known as a ‘Metameric Pair’. We experience colour when a light source is reflected/absorbed by a surface. A light source has its own characteristics, such as the differences of daylight to home or shop lighting. Subsequently, surface colour is

v i v i d.

influenced by the illumination type. However some parts of the spectrum (and resultant colour) may be visible under one light source but not the other. If such a component is present in one surface and not another, the two surfaces can visually match each other under one lighting condition but look different to each other under other illumination.’ In simple terms, if it doesn’t look right in the shop, take it out and let daylight have a chance. One of the commonest issues in all printing is the reflectivity of paper and ink, and how colours can apparently change depending upon the light that is falling on them. I print for a number of artists and often tell them to take a print home and put it exactly where they normally view the original, or a previous copy, before deciding whether the colour is correct. Even then there is the opening of that great can of worms, what exactly is true colour.

Once upon a time, sorting out colour in printing was the realm of the repro studio where specialists would work their magic before going to plate. Now we are juggling digital information, we are at the mercy of colour profiles, and input from many sources which may not have an exact appreciation of them. One of the most common questions is whether we can scan and reproduce colours accurately - which of course depends on the machine and paper it is going to be printed on - and whether we can match colour, particular Pantone references. Graffic designers, most whom now have little or no experience of the printing process other than feeding their desktop with paper, love quoting Pantone numbers, and they can be a real pain in digital printing where absolute accuracy is inevitably traded for speed. One neat little gadget that may help this continual battle, and resolve a number of debates at the shop

counter, is Pantone’s own handy measuring device, Capsure, a much improved colour analysis tool with a variety of uses. We have been trialling the Capsure and will do a full review next month, but initial impressions are very favourable. Apart from being extremely accuate, hand held and easily portable, it is also quite expensive so it’s unlikely a customer, or a freelance designer will have one or even understand how it works. So a great piece of foolproof technology to wave under their nose in a dispute. It can quickly assess a colour, even isolate tiny tonal changes, and provide an instant Pantone reference, as well as the equivalent value in RGB, CMYK and LAB. Like any new tool there’s a bit of a learning curve, but if information overload hasn’t claimed me by next month’s issue, I’ll be able to tell you a lot more. For more info: colourconfidence.com

Mint and map marketing Flagging the Royal Wedding Which one works best? There’s only one way to find out…FIGHT! Sorry, I may have over indulged on the Harry Hill front, but these two new marketing messages arrived on my desk the same day and I found them both main contenders to feature in our regular print prophet feature. The samples sent by Joanna Slater from Corporate Promotional Mints arrived ‘in-tac’ and in various shaped dispensers, all around the size of a business card. Check out the key ring fob version, ideal for driving home a regular marketing message. joannaslater@ corporatepromotionalmints.co.uk 0800 328 1018 The parcel from Peter Nash at info carte impressed everyone at CSN with how such a large format message can be delivered in such a small pocket portable presentation. applications. Info carte is an entirely bespoke communication vehicle to suit your print customer’s needs. They’re going to throw their watches off the top, run down the stairs and try to catch the watches before they hit the ground. The third tosses his watch off the tower, jogs down the stairs, goes to a candy store, buys a snack, walks back to Big Ben and catches his watch. “How did you do that?” asks one of his friends. “My watch is 30 minutes slow.”

to be made king. Dying, he gasped out: ‘Tee hee, Brutus.’ Nero was a cruel tyranny who would torture his subjects by playing the fiddle to them. Joan of Arc was burnt to a steak and was canonised by Bernard Shaw. Finally Magna Carta provided that no man should be hanged twice for the same offence. In midevil times most people were alliterate. The greatest writer of the futile ages was Chaucer, who wrote many poems and verses and also wrote literature. Another story was William Tell, who shot an arrow through an apple while standing on his son’s head. It was an age of great inventions and discoveries. Gutenberg invented removable type and the Bible. Another important invention was the circulation of blood. Sir Walter Raleigh is a historical figure because he invented cigarettes and started smoking. And Sir Francis Drake circumcised the world with a 100 foot clipper. The greatest writer of the Renaissance was William Shakespeare. He was born in the year 1564, supposedly on his birthday. He never made much money and is famous only because of his plays. He wrote tragedies, comedies, and bisectomies. Romeo and Juliet are an example of a heroic couplet. Romeo’s last wish was to be laid by Juliet. Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Cervantes He wrote Donkey Hote. The next great author was John Milton. Milton wrote Paradise Lost. Then his wife died and he wrote Paradise Regained. During the Renaissance America began. Christopher Columbus was a great navigator who discovered America while cursing about the Atlantic. His ships were called the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Fe. One of the causes of the Revolutionary War was the English put tacks in their tea. Also, the colonists would send their parcels through the post without stamps. Finally the colonists won the War and no longer had to pay for taxis. Delegates from the original 13 states formed the Contented Congress. Thomas Jefferson, a Virgin, and Benjamin Franklin were two singers of the Declaration of Independence. Franklin discovered electricity by rubbing two cats backwards and declared, ‘A horse divided against itself cannot stand.’ Franklin died in 1790 and is still dead. Soon the Constitution of the United States was adopted to secure domestic hostility. Under the titution the people enjoyed the right to keep bare arms. Abraham Lincoln became America’s

greatest Precedent. Lincoln’s mother died in infancy, and he was born in a log cabin which he built with his own hands. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves by signing the Emasculation Proclamation. On the night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln went to the theatre and got shot in his seat by one of the actors in a moving picture show. The believed assinator was John Wilkes Booth, a supposedly insane actor. This ruined Booth’s career. Meanwhile in Europe, the enlightenment was a reasonable time. Voltaire invented electricity and also wrote a book called Candy. Gravity was invented by Issac Walton. It is chiefly noticeable in the autumn when the apples are falling off the trees. Johann Bach wrote a great many musical compositions and had a large number of children. In between he practised on an old spinster which he kept up in his attic. Bach died from 1750 to the present. Bach was the most famous composer in the world and so was Handel. Handel was half German half Italian and half English. He was very large. Beethoven wrote music even though he was deaf. He was so deaf he wrote loud music. He took long walks in the forest even when everyone was calling for him. Beethoven expired in 1827 and later died for this. The French Revolution was accomplished before it happened and catapulted into Napoleon. Napoleon wanted an heir to inherit his power, but since Josephine was a baroness, she couldn’t have any children. The sun never set on the British Empire because the British Empire’s in the East and the sun sets in the West. Queen Victoria was the longest queen. She sat on a thorn for 63 years. She was a moral woman who practised virtue. Her death was the final event which ended her reign. The nineteenth century was a time of a great many thoughts and inventions. People stopped reproducing by hand and started reproducing by machine. The invention of the steamboat caused a network of rivers to spring up. Cyrus McCormick invented the McCormick raper, which did the work of a hundred men. Louis Pasteur discovered a cure for rabbis. Charles Darwin was a naturalist who wrote the Organ of the Species. Madman Curie discovered radio. And Karl Marx became one of the Marx brothers. The First World War, caused by the assignation of the Arch-Duckby an analist, ushered in a new error in the anals of human history.

Inner Peace I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me today, and we all could probably use more calm in our lives. Some doctor on television this morning said that the way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started. So I looked around my house to see things I’d started and hadn’t finished and, before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of Chardonnay, a bodle of Baileys, a butle of wum, a pockage of Prunglies, tha mainder of bot Prozic and Valum scriptins, the res of the Chesescke an a box a choclets. Two men and a hole Two men were walking home from the pub one night… when they came across a large hole on the path. They both looked down but couldn’t see the bottom so they drop a few stones down and listen…nothing. Thinking they might hear something larger hit the bottom they find a really big rock, after a struggle they throw it down and listen again but the noise they hear is coming from behind them! They turn to see a goat charging towards them, head down, feet barely touching the ground it’s moving so fast!! The two men dive out the way just in time as the goat charges past and plunges down the hole. They are so relieved but think they had better tell the farmer. They call at the farm house and ask if he has a goat. ‘Yes’ he says ‘but why do you ask?’ The men relate the tale of how the goat had charged them but plunged to its doom down the hole. ‘Oh no’ says the farmer ‘It couldn’t have been my goat, he is really old and suffers with arthritis, and besides, I have him tied to this really big rock’.

One day my Prince will come Once upon a time, a beautiful, independent, self-assured princess happened upon a frog in a pond. The frog said to the princess, “I once was a handsome prince until an evil witch put a spell on me. One kiss from you and I will turn back into a prince and then we can marry, move into the castle with my mother and you can prepare my meals, clean my clothes, bear my children and forever feel happy doing so.” That night, while the princess dined on frog legs, she kept laughing and saying, “I don’t THINK so.”

Tough tunes Steven Spielberg wants to make a double-hard film about famous composers. He gathers together Sylvester Stallone, Claude Van Damme and Arnold Swarzenegger. ‘Sylvie’ he says. ‘Which composer do you want to play?’ ‘I would be honoured to play Chopin’ says Sylvester. ‘Claude, baby, how about you?’ ‘I’ve always wanted to play the part of Grieg’ says Claude. ‘How about you Arnie?’ ‘I’ll be Bach’ says Arnie.

The Pain Machine A man took his pregnant wife to the hospital to give birth, and the doctor told them that he had developed an experimental machine and asked if they would like to try it out. He explained carefully that the machine could take some of the pain of childbirth from the mother and give it to the father. Both the mother and father thought that this was a wonderful idea and decided to give it a try. The doctor set the knob at 10 per cent for starters , explaining to the man that 10 per cent was probably more pain than he ever experienced. But, the man was surprised at how little pain he felt and asked the doctor to turn it up a notch. The doctor turned the knob up to 20 per cent and checked the

husband’s blood pressure, which was fine. Amazed, the doctor turned the knob up again to 50 per cent. Still feeling nothing, the husband encouraged the doctor to give him ALL the pain. Again dumbfounded, the doctor increased the load to 100 PER CENT! After his wife had given birth, the man stood up, stretched a little and helped his wife into the car, both of them feeling fine. When they got home, they found the postman dead on the door step.

Football Heaven Two 90 year old men, Mike and Joe, have been friends all their lives. When it’s clear that Joe is dying, Mike visits him every day. One day Mike says, “Joe, we both loved football all our lives, and we played football on Saturdays together for so many years. Please do me one favour, when you get to Heaven, somehow you must let me know if there’s football there.” Joe looks up at Mike from his death bed,” Mike, you’ve been my best friend for many years. If it’s at all possible, I’ll do this favour for you. Shortly after that, Joe passes on. At midnight a couple of nights later, Mike is awakened from a sound sleep by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calling out to him, “Mike…Mike.” “Who is it? asks Mike sitting up suddenly. “Who is it?” “Mike--it’s me, Joe.” “You’re not Joe. Joe just died.” “I’m telling you, it’s me, Joe,” insists the voice.” “Joe! Where are you?” “In heaven”, replies Joe. “I have some really good news and a little

You know, something really challenging.”

bad news.” “Tell me the good news first,” says Mike. “The good news,” Joe says,” is that there’s football in heaven. Better yet, all of our old friends who died before us are here, too. Better than that, we’re all young again. Better still, it’s always spring time and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play football all we want, and we never get tired.” That’s fantastic,” says Mike. “It’s beyond my wildest dreams! So what’s the bad news? “You’re in the team for this Saturday.”

Sales Appraisal Q: What do you call a man who just lost his brain? A: Sales trained Q. What’s a copier salesman and a pint of Guinness got in common? A.
