This month’s magazine was strangled together between visits to Birmingham checking out lots of new kit and opportunities to profit in print. As we go to bed, a phrase that still baffles new era printers, we are of course between shows and evaluating what we have seen and getting excited about what is on the horizon. It was great to meet so many old and new friends at the Sign and Digital show last month. The follow up product tests will be case studied and published throughout the year. As to IPEX, bring it on. We are looking forward to even more show launch specials and have allocated our whole team to cover the various halls on separate days and prepare a report for daily publication at CSN LIVE www.copyshopnews.co.uk As usual we will follow up with our proper print magazine, for you to get to grips with what is new in the instant part of the print industry. Diguru continue early success with Duplo finishing investment

Start up print business Diguru has invested in a DuCreaser with Integrated Folding System as well as a System 3500 Bookletmaker from Duplo, as part of a £500,000 investment in capital equipment. These latest purchases from Diguru (short for “Digital Guru”) follow the initial investments of a Presstek 34DI press and HP wide format printer. The Southampton based firm was formed in February this year by Managing Director Richard Harwood and Operations Director Alex Marszal, with a combined print experience of over 30 years. The ethos of the business was a straight forward one as Harwood explains. “Starting with a blank sheet of paper was potentially daunting but it gave us an opportunity to get the right processes and machinery in place to quickly become a very competitive business, with quality output and first class service.” Within just one month a full time “Presstek Minder” was employed to help them cope with the volumes of work and help maximise their investment in the press. “The great thing about the DI is that it enables us to be competitive from runs ranging from 50 to 10,000, and it was important that the whole line had equally high quality levels without compromising speeds. That is when we approached Duplo.” Duplo’s new IFS (Integrated Folding System) was introduced in 2009 and is available online to the DC-445 DuCreaser and DC-645e Production Colour Finisher, allowing complete finishing all in one pass. Online to the DC-445, the system can reach speeds of up to 3,000 sheets per hour. The System 3500 combines Duplo’s 10/60Pro suction-fed collator tower, with the DBM-350 and DBM-350T bookletmaker and trimmer, with optional integrated spine press available and stitching wire. The machine boasts a 60 second set-up with speeds up to 3,500 finished booklets an hour. “We looked at alternatives but it was clear that with the decision to go with the DI, we needed a bookletmaking solution that was suited for medium to long runs and the System 3500 fits our workflow requirements extremely well. Our operators like the quick set-up, simplicity of use and automation; it is a production level machine with the ease of use of a digital press.” As far as the DC-445 IFS is concerned Diguru could not be happier, as Alex Marszal explains.“We were in danger of slowing down job turnaround with having to do a lot of manual folding and benchwork. We didn’t want such a sophisticated front end pre-press and press line, only to be compromised by a bottle neck at the finishing stage. We liked the look of the DuCreaser and folder, and whilst it’s a newly launched product, we have had no problems and our jobs sail through fine.” To contact Richard Harwood at Diguru please contact richard@diguru-uk.com 4

New QuarkXPress 8 campaign works magic with free Flash resources

Quark Inc. has launched its new ‘Flash Magic’ global campaign aimed at encouraging users to upgrade to version 8 as well as helping existing QuarkXPress® 8 users get even more value from their investment. The campaign is built around a dedicated microsite that was developed in QuarkXPress 8 (www.quark. com/magic) encompassing video training, downloadable Flash® resources, customer showcases and more. With an estimated value of £450+, the Flash resources represent substantial additional value for new and existing users alike. “There’s no question that graphic designers today need to extend their skillset beyond just print design. The challenge is how to move into Web and Flash design without a substantial investment in software and training” said Terry Welty, Quark Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing. “With this campaign we’re providing real value to designers through free video training combined with downloadable web site templates, video players, presentation templates, buttons and more that will get them up and running quickly. We felt the magic theme represents how many designers will see what’s possible right within the software they already use.” In order to enable users to use QuarkXPress 8 for the most appropriate Flash projects, the microsite identifies ten types of interactive projects that users might build using QuarkXPress 8. These include online design portfolios, product microsites, multimedia web sites, digital signage, interactive CDs/DVDs, banner adverts, photography web sites, interactive eReaders, small business/personal web sites or interactive elements within a web site. To make things even easier, the downloadable resources can be filtered according to such types of projects. The Magic Toolbox section of the microsite enables QuarkXPress users to access hundreds of downloadable Flash resources. These include everything from generic buttons, to menus, video and audio players through to complete web sites. As the downloads are all QuarkXPress Projects and Libraries, users can use them ‘as is’, customise them entirely to their specific needs or simply use them as a learning aid. While some of the downloadable Flash resources are freely available to all, others, marked as Exclusive, require a Magic Password to unlock them. The Magic Password is provided to anyone who purchases and registers QuarkXPress 8 as well as being hidden away on various social media web sites such as Facebook and Twitter. QuarkXPress 8 users are encouraged to become QuarkXPress Magicians by demonstrating their Flash design skills in QuarkXPress 8. The microsite already features a range of real-world Flash projects undertaken in QuarkXPress 8 but by submitting their work, users have the chance to have their own work featured, receive a LinkedIn recommendation, a QuarkXPress Magician certificate and 2 years free QuarkXPress maintenance worth £199. The website www.quark.com/magic is itself an example of the exciting opportunities that QuarkXPress 8 offers for Web and Flash projects. The majority of the site has been built in QuarkXPress 8 enabling everyone to see the possibilities that Flash design in QuarkXPress 8 has to offer from exciting animations to video playback. The microsite and campaign was developed by Gravity London, part of the Gravity Global Network (www.gravityglobal.net). Creative professionals can see exactly how Gravity developed the project and how they found the experience of learning Flash in QuarkXPress 8 by watching the videos in the ‘Magic showcase’ section of the microsite.

Duplo announced as Canon’s City & West pan-European Finishing Partner for IPEX End Solutions embrace Life in Latex City & West End Solutions exhibited the new HP Designjet L25500 Latex ink printers on its stand at Sign & Digital UK last month. Having already built an enviable lead in selling over 85% of all the larger L65500 latex printers

Duplo International have announced that they are “thrilled” to be chosen as Canon’s strategic panEuropean finishing supplier on the Canon stand at this years IPEX exhibition. Exhibiting in hall 10 of the show, Canon will be showcasing “a raft of innovative technologies, solutions and business development tools to help professional printers evolve their businesses by creating new value added services and revenue streams”. As Mark Lawn, European Marketing Manager at Canon Europe, explains, this ethos is well complemented by Duplo’s range of print finishing solutions: “One of our aims for the show is to demonstrate realistic solutions that will allow print organisations to become more efficient and profitable; finishing fits perfectly with this objective. Print finishing is becoming more automated and, as our research has confirmed, it is a real opportunity to add value to a print job, whether through a quicker turnaround or by enhancing the quality of the finished printed product. We are very pleased to announce Duplo as our strategic pan-European finishing partner, as we believe they can help us achieve this.” Duplo will be supporting the Canon stand with six finishing solutions featured in both the Graphic Arts zone and the Central Reprographic Department (CRD) zone. Duplo’s Ultra 205A UV Coater, Digital System 445 Bookletmaker, 7228-06LT Guillotine and, new for IPEX, DB-280 Perfect Binder will finish real life applications in the Graphic Arts area. In the CRD zone, Duplo’s DC-645 Cutter/Creaser with Integrated Folder System and 5222 Digicut Guillotine, will help focus on cost savings and improving efficiency. Tony Lock, Duplo UK Managing Director comments May 2010 | Copy Shop News

“We are naturally thrilled at this opportunity to work closely with Canon at IPEX. We see ourselves as an integral part of the production workflow and believe our innovative finishing devices can complement the pre-press and press solutions on show. From the plans we have seen, the Canon stand looks inspiring and extremely relevant to the modern printer; now it is time for Duplo to help Canon deliver their message.” This latest announcement follows a steady flow of partnership activity between the two organisations. At IPEX 2006, Canon Europe signed a distribution agreement with Duplo aimed at ‘enabling Canon to provide an even more comprehensive range of complete digital finishing solutions’, and in 2008 Duplo supported Canon Europe’s Drupa stand. “Our partnership has gone from strength to strength since we first announced it in 2006, and we now see Duplo playing a key role on our stand at IPEX 2010. For print businesses, it is not purely about printing; it is now more important than ever for them to generate new revenues by making the transition from a ‘print’ service provider to a ‘communication’ service provider, who can fully harness the power of digital technology and offer value-added marketing communication solutions. At Ipex, Canon is setting out to inspire visitors to make the leap to new business opportunities and we’re confident that Duplo will play a key role in helping us achieve that goal,” Lawn concludes. The Canon Europe stand can be found in hall 10 stand number CDEF270. A bigger selection of Duplo’s finishing products can be found on the Duplo International stand in hall 20 stand number C676. Duplo UK 01372 478 279

in the UK this year, the company is looking forward to repeating its success with the smaller version of this ground breaking printer. Doug Gilbertson Managing Director, City & West End Solutions said, ‘Sign & Digital was the ideal showcase for the new 60inch and 42inch L25500 models, it’s already making a deep impact into the traditional solvent sign maker market. Quite simply if you’re a sign maker who wants to grow your business you need to look at these printers, the productivity benefits from its performance alone warrants this, if you add the wider environmental benefits as well it’s essential’ City & West End Solutions also showcased a full range of solutions with the HP Designjet L25500 at the core. With Summa cutters available in bundles with the new printer there is a solution for every user. He added, ‘Our philosophy is to help our customers at every stage in their investment in new technology whether it’s a new printer or updating their current Rip. We know that getting the best support possible is crucial to making new technology produce the profit our customers expect. Our customers simply get the best service in the market and will always do so.’ City & West End Solutions solution lead philosophy also extends to how new equipment is financed for their customers. With capital expenditure under constant pressure the availability of competitive leasing options is a vital element in putting the right solution together. Continuing David said, ‘Our relationship with our customers is guided by the simple objective of getting the best possible overall solution for them and their business. This means getting the right hardware, software and media to produce the result they want. It also means we give our customers the best options in how to pay for their solution. In terms of leasing options we are able to obtain the most competitive rates in the market so they have all the flexibility possible in ensuring that their solution produces the right return for their business.’

Cannock printer Simon to go the distance 2nd year running in memory of his dad

Cannock businessman Simon Talbot last year ran the London marathon in memory of his dad who died of Alzheimers 2 years ago. He managed to raise £5500 for the Society and is

prepared to do it all over again to try and help others. The father of two from Hednesford is in training to run the gruelling 26-mile race on April 25th 2010 to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of his father, Derek, who died in January 2008 after a seven year battle with Alzheimer’s. “Last year I really wanted to do the marathon in memory of my Dad and to try and help others, I wouldn’t want anyone else to see what my Dad went through, it’s terrible to see anyone with Alzheimer’s and even worse when it’s someone close to you. It was a very long and tiring 26 miles but I feel it is for a very worthwhile course and am more than willing to put myself through it again” he said. His father, a plumber who worked for Cannock Chase District Council and Meynell Valves in Wolverhampton, died

aged 64 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in August 2001. Derek, a father of two and grandfather of five, of Hednesford, gradually lost his power of speech and memory. A seizure in 2006 left him bed ridden for the last two and a half years of his life, during which he was dependent on nursing care in a home, unable to communicate or feed himself. “It’s a terrible thing to see someone you love withering away with Alzheimer’s,” said Simon who runs Kazoo printers in Bridgtown, Cannock.“It’s not like any other disease, it’s difficult to know how to help someone, Dad looked like he was in pain sometimes but because he couldn’t talk to us we just didn’t know what he was thinking or feeling. I wanted to run the London marathon last year to raise as much money as possible to try and make a difference

and help others and would love to do the same again.” “The prediction is that in less than 20 years time nearly a million people will have dementia and 1.7 million by 2051. That means almost everyone will either have dementia or know someone who does,” added Simon. “It’s something we need to take action about, I just want to raise awareness of what having dementia means and help the Alzheimer’s Society work for a cure and improve the care of people with Alzheimer’s. ABC Print introduce DC-645 to new digital facility

Hereford-based printer ABC Print has followed the announcement of its new digital print facility in November 2009, with the purchase of a DC-645 Production Colour Finisher from Duplo. Duplo’s highest-end slitter/cutter/creaser has been purchased to ensure that the company’s new shortrun print centre can ensure a quick turnaround service on all types of job. Mike Greene, Managing Director at ABC explains. “We wanted the workflow from pre-press to the bizhub to the finishing stage to be seamless. I wanted a machine that did not require a skilled bindery specialist to be relied upon to operate. Most of our jobs require a cut and a crease, and to guillotine short-runs and then place on to a separate creaser, with potentially lengthy set-up times, did not suit my requirements. The DC-645 allows my bizhub operator to place work into the feed tray, press the green button, and get on with other work in the digital studio.” 6

The DC-645 is a multi finishing device which enables cutting, slitting, creasing and perforating functions all in one single sheet pass. Aimed at the digital print market, the DC-645 is ideal for multi-application print rooms producing anything from brochures to business cards to flyers in a short space of time. Established in 1997, ABC Print’s heritage is in litho printing, and this still forms the major part of the business. The introduction of large format printing and short-run digital in recent times has allowed the business to adapt to changing customer requirements, offer major clients a wider range of services and ultimately become more competitive in all areas of the market place. ABC have been using Duplo technology since 1999 when they purchased their first bookletmaker from the Esher-based company. They then became the first user of the System 5000 bookletmaker with two-knife trimmer in 2006, signing the deal at Ipex. The company now runs two System 5000’s in their litho production area, and it was the experience of this bookletmaker that aided their decision in purchasing the DC-645. “The two-knife trim option on the bookletmaker saves between one and two hours per job. Before, we needed to trim the sheets on the two long edges before stitching, which delayed the finishing process. Having introduced the module in 2006 we have turned over 5 million books, and it was our experience with this machine plus the intuitive set-up process with automation that meant we went back to Duplo.” Continues Greene. “In a similar way to the DC-645 in the digital suite, my

bookletmaker operator can get on with other finishing operations in the bindery such as guillotining and high volume creasing whilst the bookletmaker runs. I wanted to apply the same ethos in our short-run digital operation.” After the purchase of another Heidelberg press, the Anicolor, two years ago, Greene explains that his technology decisions are all based around the final service to his customer. “We pride ourselves in printing and service excellence. We offer high quality printed output, quick turnaround, competitive pricing and the reason why I have two multi-unit Heidelberg presses and two Duplo bookletmaking lines is simple, I want to be able to cope with high volumes and I want all customers to receive a perfect service.” “Our partnership with Duplo and other suppliers has allowed us to offer competitive pricing, whether the runs are 50 or 50,000. We can be quick, reactive and flexible in our service. We are very happy with the DC645 investment.” Concludes Greene. Looking toward to the future, with the recent investments at ABC, they now intend to attract business from local small to medium commercial printers needing quick and convenient trade finishing. Xerox Chairman Anne Mulcahy to retire

XeroX Corporation announced that Anne M. Mulcahy will step down as chairman and a director of the board, on May 20, the day of Xerox’s annual shareholders’ meeting. Xerox CEO Ursula M. Burns will then assume the additional role of chairman. “Leaving Xerox is not easy, but the time is right,” said Anne Mulcahy. “This decision is made infinitely easier by the knowledge

that I turn the company over to a gifted leader at a point when our strategy is sound, our financial position is strong, and our opportunities for growth are considerable.” Anne who is 57, became chief executive officer of Xerox on Aug. 1, 2001, and chairman on Jan. 1, 2002. Prior to that, she was president and chief operating officer of the company from May 2000 to July 2001. She began her Xerox career as a sales representative in Boston in 1976. During her 34 years with Xerox, she has held senior management positions in sales, human resources and marketing, and led the Xerox business division that sells products for reseller and dealer channels. “Anne leaves a rich legacy that is defined by her close connection to Xerox customers, her active engagement with Xerox people, and her steadfast commitment to the values of the company that

are inherent in its culture and in her effective leadership,” said N.J. Nicholas, Jr., lead independent director of Xerox’s board of directors. “As important, she has worked closely with the board to ensure a seamless and well planned leadership succession. She has earned our tremendous respect and our deepest gratitude.” “A remarkable leader who inspires followership, Anne was instrumental in re-creating our company at a time when we needed it most,” said Ursula Burns. “She prioritised investments in innovation, shifted our strategy to become more focused on services, and significantly improved our financial health. As a result, we have a strong foundation from which to build an even stronger company. I am grateful for Anne’s extraordinary contributions, humbled by her confidence in my leadership, and committed to honouring her impressive legacy.”

IPEX+ bRINgS EDUCatIoN March Was Morgana’s best to thE hEaRt oF IPEX tHe Ipex 2010 organisers have launched Ipex+, an easy to use online diary providing a comprehensive overview of free educational sessions on offer to visitors at the show. The system allows exhibitors to highlight on-stand seminars, educational debates and live presentations via www.ipex.org/plus so visitors can prepare in advance of the show and maximise the time they spend at Ipex. The information gathered via Ipex+ will feature on ‘My Ipex’ (www. ipex.org/myipex) the interactive online planning tool for visitors to create their own personalised itineraries. Users of the system can explore the show stand by stand by looking at interactive floorplans on screen, or by searching for exhibitors alphabetically, by hall, or product category. After identifying which exhibitors to visit at the show, users can then easily create a short-list containing all exhibitors’ locations with links to their company profiles, press releases, new product information and video content at the click of a mouse. The personalised itinerary, including the information about educational programmes can then be printed or saved and re-visited when they next access ‘My Ipex’. “By submitting details of their educational plans, exhibitors can benefit from free online promotion on our website and as a result draw as many visitors as possible to their stand. Ipex+ will provide a wealth of information about free educational opportunities to visitors, creating an even more compelling reason to attend Ipex 2010.” It’s extremely easy for exhibitors to upload the seminar and educational content to the Ipex+ system on the show website via an Excel template. Once compiled, exhibitors can email the spreadsheet in Excel format to Andrew Thornhill at the Ipex marketing team (athornhill@iirx.co.uk) for uploading to the Ipex website. 8

Month for over a year

DiGital finishing specialist Morgana Systems is cautiously predicting a market upturn after sales in March were the best by far for over a year. “One month is perhaps too little to go on”, said the Milton Keynes-based company’s M.D. Quen Baum, “but after our recent announcement of a 7% improvement in our US business during 2009, these March results were very encouraging.” The new figures apply to Morgana’s operations at home and overseas with the UK giving a particularly strong performance. Morgana has posted healthy profits throughout the recession, but Quen Baum sees the latest trend as a possible move back towards the type of growth the company was enjoying three and four years ago. “Our focus is on digital finishing”, he remarked, “and this is a sector that has suffered less than others. With IPEX coming up and exciting new products in the pipeline, I believe we can afford to sound a note of optimism.” Morgana Systems Ltd, tel: 01908 608888,

Fujifilm launches WonderTack

fuJifilm announced the launch of WonderTack, a solvent printable, white satin gloss polypropylene film, which adheres to smooth, flat surfaces without the use of adhesive. This cost effective, innovative solution is the latest addition to Fujifilm’s euromedia range of flexible media for large format printing. This environmentally friendly solution is very quick to print, and its ability to stick without adhesive is down to the unique, micro-porous suckers on the adhering side. The lack of adhesive gives it its ‘green’ characteristics, as well as making it reusable on multiple occasions. For example, POS graphics printed on WonderTack can be applied even by inexperienced users as it is easily repositionable and reusable. In addition, the film is also available for UV-curing and water-based systems. Fujifilm is also announcing the successor to its former euromedia 150g Citylight Paper. This is a transparent, satin matt paper for lightbox applications produced by solvent printing, and ensures crisp, sharp print results with a satin matt finish and perfect, cloud-free light diffusion. The robust paper produces needle sharp prints, which are protected from humidity, smearing, scratching and fading. The excellent colour reproduction and outstanding contrast of the printed image make this product the ideal medium for low cost lightbox applications. Since the material is made of paper, it is also an environmentally friendly alternative to film. Lightbox Paper is available as required in 100, 300 or 600 running metres. Finally, the euromedia BlockOut Super Heavy FR Genuine B1-certified 800 g/sqm cast banner will be launched at the show. This bulky, heavy banner material, which is used for the production of durable banners using solvent-based printing systems, is made from satin matt material with a white surface and is perfect for double sided printing. The opaque block-out liner prevents both printed sides from showing through. Although BlockOut Super Heavy FR has all the features of a premium banner, it is available in the basic price range. International Paper’s new colours and weights international Paper, has underlined its commitment to the tinted papers product sector with the announcement of the launch of nine new shades in its Rey Adagio range, and also the addition of additional weights, all of which will be produced at its Saillat mill. The nine new shades that will be added to the Rey Adagio product range include; bonbon, sky, pistachio, sand, leaf green, spring green, cinnamon, lavender and pumpkin. The addition of these new shades will increase the colour range available from 25 to 34, with additional weights also being added in SRA2 size of 160, 180 and 220gsm. The release of the nine new shades and additional weights underlines International Paper’s continuing commitment to the tinted paper sector, following the switch of production from Inverurie to Saillat. Tints are produced at Saillat, International Paper’s best in class European mill and an outstanding environmental production facility, Saillat is one of the world’s best performing sites in terms of CO2 emissions. Since 1990, Saillat has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 78% (significantly better than the paper industry average of -27%). At the same time the 10

Saillat mill, which was built in 1894, also uses thinning from certified forests or those that are in the process of becoming certified, with its main forestry supplies located within just 150km of the mill, reducing any transport related environmental impacts that may occur. The production of Rey Adagio tinted papers also further highlights the environmental importance and performance of the Saillat production site, as Saillat also recovers the resources from the furniture and framing industries which they cannot use for its wood supply. In terms of energy efficiencies and performance, some 85% of Saillat’s energy requirements are met by the on site production of green energy (biomass) due to its combined heat and power plant. Again this is significantly better than the paper industry average of 53%, according to the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). As a further endorsement of its environmental performance, Rey Adagio is also PEFC certified, which guarantees that a product is made from sustainably managed forests. Versatile punching & binding systems for wire, comb and coil

Canon LFP inkjet printers takes quality to new level Canon UK has launched three new imagePROGRAF large format printers (LFPs) designed to deliver the highest quality output achievable in today’s aqueous large format printing market – the 24-inch Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6350 and imagePROGRAF iPF6300, and the 44-inch Canon imagePROGRAF iPF8300. Featuring Canon’s new 12-colour LUCIA EX pigment ink system and innovative printing technology, the new models are able to produce prints with increased accuracy and an extended colour gamut approximately 20 per cent wider than the previous Canon fine art series of imagePROGRAF LFPs (iPF5100, iPF6100, iPF8100 and iPF9100). The new ink system has been developed in response to the growing demand for high quality, large format prints in the professional photographic, proofing and fine art markets. The new inks feature an innovative polymer structure that results in greater scratch resistance and protection from colour fading, whilst reducing bronzing and metamerism* to produce more consistent, durable prints. Denser, sharper blacks and smooth colour gradations are able to reproduce the finest shadow area details, meeting demands for more sophisticated print quality. An additional inbuilt mechanical rigidity in the new imagePROGRAF models enables more precise ink placement, resulting in improved line and text accuracy and colour uniformity. An inbuilt high performance, multi sensory colour calibrator can also precisely detect, adjust and compensate for print head density variations to provide an unsurpassed level of colour reproduction and matching. Users are able to take advantage of the exceptional print quality of the new imagePROGRAF devices with the third-party RIP compatibility from GMG, EFI, ColorGATE, ONYX Graphics, Eisfeld (PosterJet), CGS, DEV studio and SCP, providing a range of print applications, including proofs, designs and commercial photos. The imagePROGRAF models are able to use third-party media, alongside the Canon recommended stocks, by utilising the Media Configuration Tool to calibrate paper settings to achieve an optimum print output. Compatible ICC profiles of popular media types are downloadable from the Hahnemuehle, Ilford and Sihl websites. Additionally the new range of Canon imagePROGRAF LFPs are fully compatible with Colortrac and Contex large format scanners to offer a complete scan to print solution. To support high-volume printing and streamline workflows, the Canon imagePROGRAF iPF8300 and iPF6350 come equipped with an 80 GB highcapacity hard disk drive (HDD) that allows for faster spooling of large files as well as the ability to reprint jobs directly from the printer. To ensure the highest level of productivity and reduce overall print time, all new models are also equipped with a standard gigabit Ethernet network interface and an automatic dual-blade cutter. * sample metamerism: When two colour samples appear to match under a particular light source, and then do not match under a different light source this is “sample metamerism.” – Source, Wisegeek.com www.canon.co.uk

Watkiss innovations WatkiSS Automation will show its entire range of products, with the focus on increased efficiency, productivity and quality; including the launch of a number of new products. Watkiss’ PowerSquare™ SquareBack booklet makers are already widely accepted as the most versatile booklet makers available. At Ipex, Watkiss will demonstrate an up-rated PSQ200 PowerSquare Booklet Maker with an average productivity increase on thin books of approximately 25% and, in some cases, up to 75%. To compliment this, two new products for the PowerSquare range are on show for the first time at Ipex 2010. The new PSF PowerSquare Sheet Feeder, combined with the PSQ200 PowerSquare Booklet Maker, is a high-speed near-line booklet making solution for digital printers. It accepts the output from a wide range of high volume sheet fed digital printers and, for operator convenience, the pallets of printed paper are simply wheeled from the printer to the sheet feeder. The PSF feeds up to 12,000 sheets per hour and includes a separate cover feeder. Paul Attew, Sales Director explains “Not all customers want an online finishing system. Nearline solutions give great flexibility, especially when you want to finish the output from several different printers. The operating speed of the PSF is much higher than cut sheet printers, making it well suited to multi-printer applications.” The new PBS PowerSquare Book Stacker delivers huge efficiency gains by allowing the PSQ200

PowerSquare Booklet Maker to run, unattended, for extended periods. The PBS stacks finished books vertically and, with a capacity of 930mm, can run for up to an hour without operator intervention. The PBS accepts different sized books without adjustment and can be unloaded on-the-run to give uninterrupted production. The PBS connects to both online and offline PSQ200 PowerSquare Booklet Makers. “The PowerSquare connects to most high volume sheet fed printers, and its capability for books up to 50 sheets (200 pages) thick means that it handles a colossal throughput. The new PBS Book Stacker makes this type of work so much more efficient for high volume users.” Says Paul Attew “ We know that many of our existing customers will want to add this facility to their PowerSquare systems.”

For users of Watkiss’ Vario and DigiVAC collating and finishing systems, including the Document Finishing System, Watkiss will be showing the new 2-KT TwoKnife Trimmer. The 2-KT trims the top and bottom edge of the booklet, to give a professional and cost effective solution for full bleed printed work. It is perfect for a wide range of traditional and on demand applications, where the booklets are quickly finished in one streamlined operation without the need for additional handling or finishing steps. The 2-KT is easy to set up from a digital display and jobs can be saved in its memory. The 2-KT is available on all new Watkiss Vario and DigiVAC installations, and as a modular upgrade on all earlier units. Watkiss Automation Limited,Tel. 01767 685700 Email: jowatkiss@watkiss.com 17

Morgana launches at IPEX

morGana Systems will add to its reputation by introducing an entirely new kind of folder and a new range of creasers at IPEX. The Morgana AutoFold Pro represents a new idea in folding, working with any creaser – not just models from the Morgana range – to create a creasing and folding station for digital printers who cannot justify the cost of a fully integrated creaser/folder. “We have developed the AutoFold Pro”, says Morgana’s M.D. Quen Baum, “in response to demand from growing digital print businesses. These are companies that already have a creaser and are looking for specialised folding capability without having to incur the cost of an all in one unit like our DigiFold.” The AutoFold Pro is a free-standing unit with a vacuum feed conveyor that can be adjusted to the height of any creaser. It is simply wheeled up to the creaser and, with both machines turned on; the pre-creased sheets are delivered straight into the conveyor for folding. “In essence”, says Quen Baum, “the AutoFold provides a highly efficient creasing and folding station which offers the benefit of our ‘flying

knife’ technology to protect digital substrates from the damage that can occur with conventional buckle or knife crease folders.” The AutoFold Pro accepts sheet sizes to 600mm x 385mm with the standard conveyor and 900mm x 385mm with the optional extended conveyor and handles stocks up to 0.4mm thick. It operates at up to 6500 sheets per hour when folding an A4 sheet in half. Using new Morgana touch-screen technology, the operator instructs the AutoFold about the length of the pre-creased sheet and which of many from a wide range of folds is required. Once delivered from the creaser, the sheets are accurately registered to the side lay and delivered to a motor driven shingling system that ensures consistent, high quality stacking. “Obviously, we expect many of our thousands of AutoCreaser users to be interested in the AutoFold Pro”, commented Quen Baum, “but the beauty of the design lies in the fact that a printer with any model of creaser can buy one and improve productivity immediately.” Given a price of £11,990, Morgana is expecting the AutoFold Pro to be a big

PEFC provides knowledge

tHiS year The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes will be exhibiting at Ipex 2010 for the first time. This important trade show billed as “the largest Englishspeaking global technology event for print, publishing and media” will be held at the NEC Birmingham from 18-25 May 2010. Visitors to the show are drawn from 159 countries with 40% of visitors coming from outside the UK. The top ten visitor countries in 2006, when the show was last held, came from Germany and The Netherlands. PEFC will be exhibiting at one of the 30 small exhibition pods in the Knowledge Centre area, which can be found in Hall 11 F230/U. The majority of the UK’s leading paper merchants are now able to offer a range of PEFC-certified papers to their customers and almost 500 printers have now been awarded PEFC chain of custody certification. In order to make it easier for

success in both home and overseas markets. In addition to the AutoFold, Morgana will also use IPEX to show its newly invented range of AutoCreasers, featuring the Morgana blade and matrix creasing system and a new ‘PosiFeed’ feeding system. This enables the feeder to be piled higher while maintaining consistency and eliminating misfeeds. As well as an improved AutoCreaser 33, which operates at 5,500 sheets per hour and now costs 14% less than the previous model, there are two new AutoCreaser Pro models. The first of these is the AutoCreaser Pro 33 which, in addition to the ‘PosiFeed’ system, is equipped with an intuitive 7” touch screen to control all functions. The user simply keys in the sheet length (popular sizes are pre-set) and then touches the emblem for whatever fold type will be required. The AutoCreaser Pro will calculate where the creases will go and set them accordingly, with any minor adjustments being made via a directional arrow symbol. Because only symbols are used for settings and adjustments, no translations

are needed so simplifying operator training, especially in non-English speaking markets Morgana claims that the AutoCreaser Pro 33 combines ease of use and operational sophistication at a level never seen before at the price. Productivity is enhanced by an increase in speed to 8,500 sheets per hour — over 50% faster than previous models. A selective speed control has been built in to allow the operator to decide the optimum speed for any given job. Another feature of the new creaser is an alphanumeric memory which allows an unlimited number of jobs to be stored and named. Genuine new technology on the Roland DG stand Roland will be exhibiting a range of its latest printing hardware developments and showcasing applications that have compelling commercial and creative possibilities for companies producing anything from statutory labelling to building wrapping large format graphics; packaging samples to membrane switches; four colour and way beyond. Roland and its partners will be demonstrating, among others, the new VersaUV LEC-330 inkjet printer. “Printer” only hints at the LEC-330’s full potential. Within its compact footprint, the LEC-330

also cuts, creases, produces matt and gloss spot varnishes, highly dimensional emboss effects, lensdoming and countless textures. Add to that 1440dpi print resolution, white inks and the ability to work with practically any coated or uncoated stock or substrate up to 1.3mm thick, and it’s clear that the LEC-330 is a digital power-tool with far reaching potential for anyone with an appetite for print, or a need to sell it. Integrating neatly within industry standard workflows, the LEC-330 gives its users the ability to intuitively turn the products of the most fertile imaginations into highly marketable output. 330. It can produce fully built packaging samples on virtually all stocks without rules, dies or any costly origination. If a powerful imagination is its input, sheer perfection is its output. Also on show will be the brand new VersaCAMM VS-640 64” printer/cutter. The VS-640 can be chosen in any one of three configurations. One is designed to deliver the undiluted novelty and impact of Roland’s

silver ink, a second enables the production of hi-fi colour, and the third raises productivity to stellar levels by delivering uni-directional quality at bi-directional speeds. At 64” wide, the VS-640 is certain to be a hit with anyone who comes to the show with ambitions to sign up for the perfect vehicle wrapper’s printer. 20

Refined print-cut makes the VS-640 an appealing choice to graphic producers and printers with an eye on capturing a share of the market for digital decals and signs. The good news continues with Roland’s introduction of metallic inks. Potential users can still make just as big an impact in print by signing up for wide format XC-540MT. Looking not unlike other printers in Roland’s attractively designed portfolio, the XC-540MT’s output looks anything but familiar. For the first time in a commercial inkjet printer, the XC-540MT makes it possible to print genuine silver ink and to mix that ink with a full gamut of density swept colour too. The printer can deal with a huge range of self adhesive and speciality media. Whether providing a contrasting counterpoint or accent, or dominating with its dazzling brilliance, the output produced by the printer’s metallic ink is arresting in its visual impact. The specular gamut of the ink runs from the subtle and reflective and into the pearlescent range allowing designers to explore new possibilities in print never possible with an inkjet printer before. Output from the XC-540MT can be used anywhere outdoor durable print is used and in thousands of places it never has been. With the benefit of post print lamination, the output can grace even extreme venues such as commercial vehicles and exposed signing sites. The XC-540MT can, in addition to its talents as a printer, accurately cut its output too. Coextensive cuts around output mean the system can produce stickers and decals with variable data content quickly and very economically. The print cut capability represents a new development in materials handling and works unattended. The XC-540MT takes large format inkjet output to entirely new application spaces and grows the market for high impact short run output. The unexplored space that metallic ink allows access to will be very lucrative when won. In all other respects, the XC-540MT still serves a need for a highly productive later format printer — it just happens to sweep aside creative limitations and rewards its users with something rare in print — genuinely new application possibilities. Also commanding its share of the attention on the Roland stand will be the AdvancedJet AJ-740i grand format printer, which delivers maximum productivity and high speed performance. Producing brilliant six colour CMYK+LcLm graphics on both coated and uncoated media, the AdvancedJet output reflects superior ink bonding and scratch and alcohol resistance required for outstanding outdoor durability. Roland and its partners demonstrating popular software workflows look forward to welcoming visitors to the stand and to discussing the new technologies, materials and applications that place Roland DG on stand C140, Hall 12, among IPEX’s mustsee items on visitors’ lists. www.rolanddg.co.uk

DIGITAL IMAGING

Size doesn’t always matter

The Americans have an automotive saying – you can’t beat cubes – in relation to engine size. Many people believe this also applies to digital cameras, but I think they may be mistaken. Martin Christie writes…

T

he American cubist myth should have been well and truly busted when Jim Clark took his small but light Lotus across the pond in 1965 and soundly thrashed Detroit’s great dinosaurs on their own hallowed tarmac at the Indianapolis 500. There were a number of factors involved of course, namely Colin Chapman’s brilliant design concept and Clark’s exceptional driving talent. But fundamentally it was a victory of quality over quantity. Current manufacturer’s of digital cameras, or at least those charged with marketing and selling them, are obsessed by size as a sales pitch. A single minded promotion which largely ignores so many things that go together to make a great picture, or even an average one that is much better. With the pixel count, even on mobile phones, indulging in an escalation that sounds impressive. It is worth taking a step back to view the actual picture and wonder whether a practical limit on size - far from being infinite - has already been reached. The constraining factors, apart from the size of the lens which lets the light and therefore the picture through, are the size of the image sensor, the processing power of the camera and the energy stored in batteries to service the operation. Early film cameras used massive boxes, mounted on tripods, to capture images on 8x10 plate negatives, with the photographer hiding under a black hood to see the view screen. This was inevitably the territory of the professional and spurred many small businesses. At the beginning of the twentieth century for example, there were over a hundred registered photographers with studios in a town like Brighton. Cameras of that size would be capable of producing a negative roughly approximating the output of a 500 megapixel digital camera – if such a thing existed or could be made – although it has to be said quality would be constrained by the lenses available from Victorian manufacturers. It was Kodak who brought photography to the masses and started the demise of most of those photographic specialists with the Box Brownie; literally a cardboard box with a simple lens and basic controls anyone could use. 22

“You press the button, we do the rest” was the simple but effective marketing slogan in 1900, which could equally be echoed by manufacturers of the latest image technology over a hundred years later. The Brownie, and subsequent models, used a slightly larger film, but it was the 35mm, introduced in the 1930s, that was to become the industry and thereby the amateur and professional standard and put photography for the masses in the High Street. This time it was not the photographers with the corner studio shops, but the film processors who spawned to service this demand. Now, with the popularity of digital, the processors – or most of them – have gone too, because there is no need of processing. Now when you press the button of a digital camera, it’s the camera that does the rest! And there is the issue. With conventional film it was a fairly direct relationship between size and quality. All other things, like lenses and lighting being equal, the larger the negative or positive image, the better the reproduction of copies because it was an optical enlargement reflecting the density of the original image. If you have a big original, obviously you don’t need to blow it up as big as a smaller one in proportion. That’s why most professionals doing studio work opted for so-called medium format film size – about four times the size of 35mm – for optimum results. While 35mm was considered fine for most reportage, and its speed good for sport, most quality magazines

insisted on medium format images for best reproduction from drum scanning. In relative terms a 35mm negative is calculated to be roughly the equivalent of a 30 megapixel camera image and a medium format around 150 megapixel. This comparison puts into perspective the continual question of how big a digital original is needed to enlarge to a particular size. There is no simple answer. Of course what has improved, alongside digital imaging is digital printing, which can produce better results from images that would previously have been considered unsuitable. But you can’t study a digital image with a microscope the way you could view a negative with an eye glass to spot flaws. That’s why it is hard to advise a customer because it is often a question of what quality is considered acceptable. Quality magazines could afford to set high standards. The digital print shop balances the speed versus price equation as well. The former can afford to hire photographers with medium format digital cameras – in the many thousand pound price range. Our customers are more likely to be using images from semi professional 35mm digital SLRs, consumer compacts, or even mobile phones! These now have ratings going from 3megapixels to an average 12 megapixels, with the better ones able to shoot a picture about a metre wide albeit at 72 dpi (equivalent to 30cm wide image at 300dpi, Ed). But all megapixels are not equal. Regardless of the numbers game, the

relative optical performance of the lens, and the processing power of the camera are part of the quality equation. Some years ago I was able to shoot an image we could use full size for the front cover of CSN using a 3 megapixel Fuji compact, and it looked pretty good. I now have a 3 megapixel camera in my mobile phone but there is no way we could use anything more than a thumbnail taken from it. I now use professionally two 35mm Fuji cameras, a 6mp S2 which was my first purchase, and a 12mp S3 acquired more recently. I know I should have waited for the S5 which has to be the best buy, value for money if you can source one, but there it is. The S3 is superb, coupled with a top of the range fast Nikon lens, and even with a more budget based Sigma. Although it has all those megs in the can, I can generally only shoot at 6mp because the results are fine for most uses given accurate composition and light balance. One of the limiting factors is not memory capacity as it used to be. Large capacity cards of various formats are widely and cheaply available. It is battery capacity that holds back progress, as the larger the file size, the more processing power it needs in camera. While memory storage technology has progressed leaps and bounds, batteries are still stuck a decade behind in development at least. Rechargeable batteries are a help, but even they seem to last a year in hard usage before they are confined to the waste bin, even with care to discharge and recycle. Anyone with a powerful laptop will Copy Shop News | May 2010

have found the same: once without its umbilical cord of electricity, it doesn’t take a lot of serious processing to drain its energy reserves. If more resources were switched to battery development it might help everybody and the planet as well. It is now generally accepted that despite specifications on paper, the difference in performance of most popular miniature compacts is very similar and that 5 megapixel is about the optimum. Some test results actually show that pictures taken with a 3mp camera can be better than those taken with a 6mp. It’s all a matter of how the processor handles the information it has to take in from the ccds that capture the light from the lens. The sensors of most digital cameras actually have a blur filter to compensate for high frequency interference or noise. Our eyes have evolved to cope with intense changes of lightness and dark in an instant. A digital brain cannot cope easily with this conflict and has to have checks and balances to stop it imploding. It certainly does not have the tonal latitude of film. All of these processing constraints will affect the overall quality of the image. Despite their convenience, now that virtually anyone can capture a digital image, digital cameras a very unforgiving of mistakes by the photographer. Not just basic exposure or colour balance, but auto focus for example, which can be over sensitive at wide apertures. Most images look great on the camera’s own screen, which is how most views are exchanged socially. Manufacturers have boosted the performance of these screens for that reason, giving a not entirely

honest representation of the results. Fortunately most of the images taken do not need to be printed. (I know Martin. Practically every digital image I deal with I have to lighten the midtones to compensate for the vibrancy found on the digital camera’s screen. If I didn’t do this the image would be dark when printed, Deano in Production). If they are, the best way to view an image to judge on screen is in Photoshop at 100%, even if that means scrolling across the picture to view. If you fit to screen a larger image it will disguise imperfections and look artificially perfect. You can’t see the fine detail, or the flaws. Every software uses different algorythms to plot the actual pixels into the picture that

appears on your screen. This can mean a difference in colour and clarity or apparent sharpness. Even Photoshop uses different algorythms at different enlargements, so it’s not a smooth linear progression and that will affect appearance. Try explaining that to the customer who says it looks great on the screen, and the salesman told him it was a top of the range digital camera. Yes but it’s still a rubbish picture. I’ll happily charge you a lot of money to blow it up to the size of a house but I don’t think you’ll be happy with it unless you are viewing it from the next postcode. The quality issue doesn’t just affect enlargements of course, but can be carried over into other applications if

images are to be used on posters and flyers imported into design programmes which again may alter the information finally transmitted to the printer. It’s not always immediately obvious if there is a problem, and of course, if there is it will be your fault, not the customer providing the image. (Customer ingorance eh, or lack of understand? Ed). Any number of times I have seen small images that print out well, and apparently large images that print out badly, because it is hard to evaluate all of the varied digital information hidden within it, especially as you don’t often have the luxury of unlimited time for investigation. We are print on demand after all and have to offset demand against delivery (and cost, Ed).

Asia Pulp & Paper continues Advertising Campaign

Giam Siak Kecil Biosphere reserve

Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) has launched an advertising campaign in the UK market, in order to share with the UK audience its aspirations for sustainable paper making and its contribution to community programmes in Indonesia. Two adverts will be featured in the campaign focusing on the social work that APP conducts, and also on APP’s commitment to sustainability. These adverts follow on from the release of four sixty second advertorials in early December 2009 which are currently running on CNN International. The advertorials highlight APP’s efforts for conservation and biodiversity protection, tree planting, poverty alleviation and climate change mitigation and

will appear on CNN over the next few months. “These adverts are one part of an overall effort to ensure a balanced dialogue about APP’s operations,” said Stuart Andrews, APP’s European Spokesperson. “In light of the current climate change and poverty alleviation discussions, we acknowledge that some people in developed countries may still not be aware of the unique sustainability challenges facing the paper industry in Indonesia. We also recognise that those same people may attack these advertisements as insincere. However, let there be no doubt: While APP wishes to be a world leader in the pulp and paper making industry, we will do so in a responsible and

sustainable manner whilst caring for our communities.” These adverts focus on two key issues for APP – the support for communities and the protection of the environment through sustainable operations. These are key discussion points and APP would like to have the opportunity for their voice to be heard on these issues. APP believes that a true commitment to sustainability and biodiversity protection can be achieved only by working together with a wide range of stakeholders, including government, NGO, academics and industry partners. In Indonesia, APP is implementing sustainability pillars with an equal balance of protecting endangered species; supporting greenhouse gas reduction and carbon sequestration through sustainable plantations that combat global warming; and promoting sustainable economic development in Indonesia as a whole. APP is one of the world’s leading pulp and paper companies and is ranked one of the largest vertically integrated pulp and paper producers in Asia. Its combined pulp, paper and packaging capacities in Indonesia amount to over 7 million tones. APP currently has its principal operations located in Indonesia, and markets its products to more than 65 countries on six continents.

International Paper launches new packaging for its Rey range The Rey product range includes; Rey Copy – for volume efficiencies, Rey Office – the multipurpose paper, and Rey Text & Graphics – the high end multipurpose paper with extreme whiteness and velvet finish. The new packaging highlights the recognised environmental performances of the Rey range, not least that it is produced at Saillat, one of the worlds’s best performing sites in terms of CO2 emissions. Since 1990, Saillat has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 78% (significantly better than the paper industry average of -27%). At the same time the Saillat mill also uses thinning from certified forests or those that are in the process of becoming certified, with its main forestry supplies located within just 150km of the mill, reducing any transport related environmental impacts that may occur. Saillat also recovers the resources from the furniture and framing industries which they cannot use for its wood supply. In terms of energy efficiencies and performance, some 85% of Saillat’s energy requirements are met by the on-site production of green energy (biomass). Again this is significantly better than the paper industry average of 53%, according to the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). The new Rey packaging not only highlights the environmental importance and performance of the Saillat production site, but will also display the environmental accreditation the Rey product range has earned, such as the European Ecolabel, the official European eco-certification. This label is awarded only after strict assessment of a product’s impact on the environment – throughout its life cycle form raw material through to distribution. The Rey range packaging will also display the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) logo, which guarantees that a product is made from sustainably managed forests. The Rey product range is available in the following weights and sizes; Rey Copy – A4/A3 80gsm, Rey Office – A4/A3 80, 90 & 100gsm and Folio sheet 80,90, 100 & 120gsm, Rey Text & Graphics – A4/A3 & SRA2 80,90, 100, 120 and 160gsm. GREEN ISSUES

Offices force UK workers to leave the environment at home reSearCH has revealed that UK offices are holding back their workers from being environmentally friendly. A YouGov research poll has exposed that, despite office workers being keen to make a positive difference when it comes to the environment, they are being held back by a lack of empowerment and facilities. Key facts emerging from the research include: • 3 out of 4 of us think that we are leaving our green efforts at home DESPITE 79% of UK office workers believing that being environmentally responsible at work has a big impact on the environment. • 92% of office workers believe that it is important for UK companies to be environmentally responsible BUT only 51% of us say our company has a green policy in place AND only 54% think their company does enough towards the environment. • 48% of us don’t have the right office equipment to be environmentally friendly AND 45% say we lack the power to do anything about it. In response to the findings, office expert Avery® mobilised the UK’s office workforce during the second ever Green Office Week, 26th – 30th April 2010. Designed to empower workers to be able to make a positive impact on the environment while in the office, the event united offices up and down the country in an effort to change the way we work. To see how you can make a difference, log on to www. greenofficeweek.eu Leading Eco-expert, Nicky Amos, urged offices to start prioritising the environment: “We spend a third of our lives at work, and businesses are responsible for 40% of the UK’s carbon emission, compared with 27% from the home so it’s vital that offices start to take action. Employees in the workplace hold the key to meaningful change by simply adapting their behaviour at work and they must be allowed to do so.” Remarkably, only half of those surveyed said their companies had any formal green policies in place. And, despite 92% of office workers surveyed thinking that it was important for UK companies to be environmentally responsible, only half thought that their company did enough towards the environment, thereby disempowering their efforts. Examining the results, psychologist Donna Dawson explained: “There was a feeling emanating from the research that people are confused about just what exactly they should be doing to be ‘greener’, especially in the face of an uncommitted company. Feeling empowered at work stems, firstly, from whether the company has a formal green policy in place and, secondly, on how well that policy is implemented and how open the company is to green suggestions from their workers.” Amos said: “Like it or not, the environment is on everyone’s agenda. These findings suggest that companies are generally poor at communicating their policies to employees or making them part

May 2010 | Copy Shop News

of their culture. Green housekeeping should form the cornerstone of any company’s environmental agenda, yet many offices fail to bring their approach to life for employees or empower their workforce by making environmental responsibility a part of employee workplace practices or company culture.” Interestingly, almost half of office workers surveyed stated that there were not sufficient facilities and equipment in place to enable them to do their bit for the environment, irrespective of their intentions to do so. Dawson explains that this can be the green office’s undoing, no matter how positive its environmental targets. “A company may have an environmental policy in place, but if there isn’t the equipment or facilities to implement the policy, then it is as bad as not having a policy at all and will hamper workers’ efforts.” Amos agrees with the importance of offices providing the right facilities, noting the example of “IT literate employees who recognise the role that equipment can play in helping to green the workplace – from double sided printing options to video-conferencing.” Questions as to why office workers lack the right facilities to help the environment indicate that they simply don’t have the authority to make a difference despite most wanting to, as 45% stated that they are held back by their bosses not empowering them with the ability to be environmentally-friendly. Often this adds to the threat of a long-term rebound effect which could mean that the apathy experienced at work could transfer to apathy in the home, with office workers giving into a sense of helplessness.

Office supplies companies are well aware of the importance of providing products that help both the environment and business. Marc Pinner of Avery said: “When considering that 80% of the world’s original old growth forests have been logged or severely degraded, you can see why companies such as ourselves are taking our responsibilities seriously, working with established third parties to ensure that what remains of our natural heritage is protected. The priority for Avery has been to provide office workers with eco-friendly products that don’t compromise on quality so that choosing them is good for business and good for the environment.” Office Evolution: The Natural Selection for Business Benefits

Please find your enclosed NCR sets tHankS to Marco Rigali at Regal Print for sending us enough NCR set samples to include one in each of our 6600 mailing this month. We know you all like tactile samples of real print, especially if there is some profit in it. On behalf of our own two south coast copy shops and all of you fellow quick printers, I asked Marco to share a few hints on who we should be offering NCR printing to? It appears that if you have any of the following types of businesses already having their business cards, flyers and letterheads printed with you; Then they will all, worryingly, if you are not the supplier, already be using NCR, or if not be in need of some professional print guidance. The following is a sample of the categories regularly doing it without carbon. Taxi Companies (receipts), Garages (Job Sheets, Accident Forms & receipts), Florists (Job Sheets & Receipts), Transport Companies (Various), Security Firms (Various), Recruitment Agencies (Time Sheets), Gas Service Engineers (Service Sheets), Sun bed Shops (Disclaimer Forms), Furniture Shops (Order Forms/Receipts), Electrical Shops, Indian Restaurants (Meal Order Forms), Plasterers, Tilers, Builders, Joiners, Garage Door Companies (Job Sheets), Window Companies (Various), Construction (Various), Recycling (Waste Transfer Notes), Skip Companies, Funeral Services, Paving Companies, Schools, Colleges, Carpet Shops, Engineering Firms, Fireplace Showrooms, Kitchen & Fireplace Centres, Fire Extinguisher Companies (Service Forms), Hotels, Photo Studios etc. etc. etc. All of the above will use some form of invoice/receipt. In fact any document which needs to have a duplicate copy for the customer and a copy for the supplier could be printed on NCR. Now, not wanting to teach my grandmother to suck eggs, but do we all know what NCR stands for? It never ceases to amuse me how often our industry

uses acronyms without knowing the words for the initials. CTP, no probs, that’s fairly new but do you remember the old ADFs or even RDFs. How about the early digital days of RMUs which turbo’d your 30 ppm printers up to 45 ppm, which was impressive when you had four on-line running through one CPU. Come on, 180 ppm in the 80’s was no mean feat. I digress; mind you we should run a competition for solving a few more, like the old FCOT. In my youth I sold the largest Canon copier at the time, strangely to a copy shop, and described the model on the lease paper work as a Canon NP 500 ATB, needless to say it had all the extras! Sorry, back in the 21st Century, and our NCR sets, so what does it stand for? Answers on an email please ncr@copyshopnews.co.uk with one randomly picked winner receiving the choice of either this month’s mystery prize or a bottle of whisky of the editors choice. Regal Print started in business on 9th January 1984, quickly building a good reputation for providing excellent quality goods, excellent customer service and good value for money. The client base is extensive, ranging from one man band builders, joiners etc right through to large organisation such as the NHS. The staff of 6 have been with the company for many years with the most loyal Wayne, who has been with Regal for 23 years. Apart from NCR work Regal Print can provide letterheads, compliment slips, Sage compatible stationery etc. etc. in either black or spot colours. Printing everything in-house Marco can boast a fully equipped print finishing department enabling his team to collate, stitch, booklet make, perforate, number, drill etc. before dispatch nationwide to a growing number of frontline printers requiring a reliable trade partner. FFancy ancy a new self-publishing website? aS a hub for your every want and need, CSN is used to requests for difficult to source products or services. So how hard can it be to find a web designer that can deliver your web dreams in a pre-set budget? Now we are not talking four figures here, double I like and treble I can build up to. We are lucky really to have been introduced to MWM by my brother Andy who had the vision to publish live magazines on the net whilst collating copy for a monthly properly printed and posted trade magazine. The trick is having a CMS panel to log into that even I can drive by editing word docs and inserting jpegs. Add a few forward URL links to suppliers unbranded e-brochures and keep your data updated daily and you will have a site worth visiting that can pro actively deliver news to your customers desktop. I have asked the wonderful designers at MWM to develop a choice of templates for our print shops. This is when group purchasing comes to the fore as individually some members may not have the time let alone the budget. For an initial £100 you can choose the template that best suits your image. The final personalisation is down to you, with an easy to use on-line interface for uploading word documents, jpegs and gifs. No HTML or programming expertise is required. For an ongoing monthly investment of just £40 we can all update daily news, testimonials, special offers etc. and at the touch of just one button, broadcast 26

newsletters to our customers. This email service is included in the price and can be used as often as your marketing messaging dictates. This is great for promoting new services, seasonal theme offers and updates on your price lists. While the background workings are tweaked and tested we will publish demonstration sites for you to log into and practice uploading your files. Canon Europe announces that the Business Leap Competition is now open for entries. To arrive at the shortlist of entries, the judges of the submitted business plans will consider a number of elements including: • Originality of the business idea • Clarity and persuasiveness of the plan • Financial viability of the proposition • Quality of marketing research and marketing strategy • Sales opportunities and approach suggested • Strength and experience of key team members • Practical planning and implementation skills illustrated • Soundness of the plant, equipment and facilities strategy • Awareness of present and future technological advances and/or constraints • Appreciation of environmental concerns and sustainability For any qualifying person wishing to enter the competition, the process is as follows: 1. All entries must be submitted by midnight (Central European Time) on 31 July 2010. 4. Receipt of each submission will be acknowledged by email. 5. The interviews of the ten finalists will take place between 1 August and 15 September and the winners will be notified by 30 September. 6. Because of the time, effort and potential resources required to complete the submission, Canon is also committing to provide written feedback in the form of a critique for each eligible entrant who submits a completed Business Plan before the entry deadline. This feedback will be available as soon as possible after 31st July and certainly by the end of October 2010. The terms and conditions of the competition and a guide to completing the entry form are available via the Canon Ipex 2010 microsite and any entrant requiring clarification on a point may also email their question to Canon at BusinessLeap@canon-europe.com. The decision of the judges is final and Canon will not enter into any correspondence with any entrant over the outcome of the competition. 28

READERS’ SCRIBES

FUNNIES – Shaggy dog stories In the days of yore, a knight was on his way to do something terribly important, riding his horse into the ground to get to his destination as fast as possible. After being ridden too hard for too long, his horse became lame, and seeing a small town ahead he headed straight for the stables there. “I must have a horse!” he cried, “The life of the King depends on it!” The stable keeper shook his head. “I have no horses,” he said.” They have all been taken in the service of your King.” “You must have something – a pony, a donkey, a mule, anything at all?” the knight asked. “Nothing…unless…no, I couldn’t” The knight’s eyes lit up. “Tell me!” The stable keeper leads the knight into the stable. Inside is a dog, but no ordinary dog. This dog is a giant, almost as large as the horse the knight was riding. But it is also the filthiest, shaggiest, smelliest, mangiest dog that the knight has ever seen. Swallowing, the knight said “I’ll take it. Where is the saddle?” The stable keeper walked over to a saddle near the dog and started gasping for breath, holding the walls to keep himself upright. “I can’t do it.” He told the knight. “You must give me the dog!” cried the knight. “Why can’t you?” The stable keeper said “I just couldn’t send a knight out on a dog like this.”

THE DOG AND THE CHAUFFEUR Once upon a time, there were two brothers, Simon and Garth Brown. They had a dog called Walter, and they loved to take the dog Walter to their Uncle Charlie’s mansion at the edge of town. But one day, as they arrived at the mansion, they were surprised to find that the gates were locked and they couldn’t get in. Fortunately, just then, Uncle Charlie’s tall chauffeur appeared at the mansion door and began walking toward the trio at the gates. However, the dog Walter took a sudden dislike to the tall chauffeur, and began barking and growling, making a huge noise. Neighbours leaned out of the windows of their mansions (the dog really was making a lot of noise) and asked what the hubbub was and one of the neighbours replied: “Simon and Garth’s uncle’s big chauffeur’s troubled Walter.”

After the Volcano 1. “Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but we’ll try to have them fixed before we arrive. Thank you, and remember, nobody loves you, or your money, more than Southwest Airlines.” 2. “Your seat cushions can be used for flotation, and, in the event of an emergency water landing, please paddle to shore and take them with you with our compliments.”

30

3. “As you exit the plane, make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants. Please do not leave children or spouses.” 4. And from the pilot during his welcome message: “Delta airlines is pleased to have some of the best flight attendants in the industry. Unfortunately, none of them are on this flight!” 5. Overheard on an American Airlines flight into Amarillo, Texas, on a particularly windy and bumpy day: During the final approach, the Captain was really having to fight it. After an extremely hard landing, the Flight Attendant said, “Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Amarillo. Please remain in your seats with your seat belts fastened, while the Captain taxis what’s left of our airplane to the gate

House Husband? One afternoon a man came home from work to find total mayhem in his house. His three children were outside, still in their P.J.’s, playing in the mud, with empty food boxes and wrappers thrown all about the front garden. The door to his wife’s car was open, as was the front door to the house. Proceeding into the lounge, he found an even bigger mess. A lamp had been knocked over, and a throw rug was wadded against one wall. In the front room the TV was blaring a cartoon channel, and the family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing. In the kitchen, dishes filled the sink, Breakfast food was spilled on the counter, dog food was spilled on the floor, a broken glass lay under the table, and a small pile of sand lay piled up by the back door. He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and other piles of clothes, looking for his wife. He was worried that she might be ill, or worse!! He found her lounging in the bedroom, still in her pyjamas, reading a novel. She smiled, looked up at him and asked how his day went. He looked at her bewildered and asked, “What happened here today?” She again smiled and answered, “you know everyday when you come home from work and ask me what in the world did I do today?” “Yes”, he replied reluctantly. She answered, “We’ll, today I didn’t do it!!”

Tree Fellas A passerby noticed a couple of council workers working along the street pavement. The man was quite impressed with their hard work, but he couldn’t understand what they were doing. Finally, he approached the workers and asked, “I appreciate how hard you’re both working, but what the heck are you doing? It seems that one of you digs a hole, and then the other guy immediately fills it back up again. One of the council workers explained, “The third guy who plants the trees is off sick today.”

Cue Bridge A musical director was having a lot of trouble with one drummer. He talked and talked and talked with the drummer, but his performance simply didn’t improve. Finally, before the whole orchestra, he said, “When a musician just can’t handle his instrument and doesn’t improve when given help, they take away the instrument, and give him two sticks, and make him a drummer.” A stage whisper was heard from the percussion section: “And if he can’t handle even that, they take away one of his sticks and make him a conductor.”

This could be you? A man in a hot air balloon realised he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted,” Excuse me, can you help? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.” The woman below replied, “You are in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You are between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.” “You must be an engineer,” said the balloonist. “I am,” replied the woman. “How did you know?” “Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of you, and the fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help so far.” The woman below responded, “You must be in management.” “I am,” replied the balloonist, “but how did you know?” “Well,” said the woman, “you don’t know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it’s my fault!”

No Brainer A family went to a hospital, where one of their relatives would be having a brain transplant. One of the relatives asked, “What will the cost of a new brain be?” The doctor replied, “A female brain costs £25,000 and a male brain costs £50,000.” The men smirked, but one of the females asked, “Why is that, doctor?” “Well,” the doctor replied,” the female brain is less because it has been used.”

PROMISE AFTER DEATH.... A couple made a deal that whoever died first would come back and inform the other of the afterlife. Their biggest fear was that there was no after life at all. After a long life together, the husband

was the first to die. True to his word, he made the first contact: “Marion... Marion” “Is that you, Bob?” “Yes, I’ve come back like we agreed.” “That’s wonderful! What’s it like?” “Well, I get up in the morning, I have sex. I have breakfast and then it’s off to the golf course. I have sex again, bathe in the warm sun and then have sex a couple of more times. Then I have lunch (you’d be proud – lots of greens). Another romp around the golf course, then pretty much have sex the rest of the afternoon. After supper, it’s back to golf course again. Then it’s more sex until late at night. I catch some much needed sleep and then the next day it starts all over again” “Oh, Bob are you in Heaven?” “No..........I’m a rabbit in Arizona...”

For the cake, place butter and sugar in a bowl and whisk until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time then fold in the flour and the cocoa powder. 4. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin, smooth the surface with a knife and bake in the pre-heated oven for 35-40 minutes until firm and springy. To test if the cake is done, insert a clean skewer into the middle

READERS’ SCRIBES of the cake - if it comes out clean then the cake is ready. 5. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin for five minutes before turning out onto a wire rack. 6. Drain the cherries, reserving 200ml (7 fl oz) of the cherry syrup. Add the kirsch to the reserved syrup. 7. Use a large serrated knife to slice the cake horizontally into three equally sized rounds. 8. Place each round on a chopping board and spoon the cherry syrup evenly over each disc and leave to soak in. 9. For the icing, heat 200ml (7 fl oz) of the double cream to scalding point then add the chocolate pieces. Remove from the heat and stir gently until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Pour into a bowl and allow to cool in the refrigerator, to thicken slightly. 10. Whip the remaining double cream until thick. Spread one of the cake discs with half of the cream then cover with half of the cherries, pressing them in lightly. Top with the second disc of sponge and repeat this process, finishing with the third disc left plain on top. Gently press the whole cake together with the palms of your hands. 11. Remove the chocolate icing from the fridge and give it a quick stir. Use a palette knife to thickly spread the top and sides of the cake with the icing, starting with the top first. This way, if the chocolate oozes down the sides of the cake, it won’t matter. 12. Leave the cake to set in a cool place then slice into large wedges and serve.

Lemon Drizzle Cake 225g unsalted butter 225g caster sugar 4 eggs Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 225g self raising flour For drizzle topping Juice 11/2 lemons 85 g caster sugar Method Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Beat together the butter and sugar until pale and creamy, then add the eggs, one at a time, slowly mixing through. Sift in the flour, then add the lemon zest and mix until well combined. Line a loaf tin (8 x 21cm) with greaseproof paper, then spoon in the mixture and level the top

with a spoon. Bake for 45-50 mins until a thin skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. While the cake is cooling in its tin, mix together the lemon juice and sugar to make the drizzle. Prick the warm cake all over with a skewer or fork, then pour over the drizzle - the juice will sink in and the sugar will form a lovely, crisp topping. Leave in the tin until completely cool, then remove and serve. Will keep in an airtight container for 3-4 days, or freeze for up to 1 month.

New Term Early one morning, a mother went in to wake up her son. “Wake up, son. It’s time to go to school!” “But why, Mum? I don’t want to go.” “Give me two reasons why you don’t want to go.” “Well, the kids hate me for one, and the teachers hate me, too!” “Oh, that’s no reason not to go to school. Come on now and get ready.” “Give me two reasons why I should go to school.” “Well, for one, you’re 52 years old. And for another, you’re the Headmaster!”

Troubled Times A guy came into a bar one day and said to the barman “Give me six double vodkas.” The barman says “Wow! you must have had one hell of a day.” “Yes, I’ve just found out my older brother is gay.” The next day the same guy came into the bar and asked for the same drinks. When the bartender asked what the problem was today the answer came back, “I’ve just found out that my younger brother is gay too!” On the third day the guy came into the bar and ordered another six double vodkas. The bartender said “Jesus! Doesn’t anybody in your family like women?” “Yeah, my wife...”

If Microsoft Built Cars – top ten 1 Every time they repainted the lines on the road you would have to buy a new car. 2 Occasionally your car would die on the motorway for no reason, and you would just accept this, restart and drive on.

The little boy commented, “Dad I don’t like the holes in the cheese!”

3 Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre would cause your car to stop and fail and you would have to re-install the engine. For some strange reason, you would accept this too. 4 You could only have one person in the car at a time, unless you bought “CarXP” or “CarVista”. But, then you would have to buy more seats. 5 Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast, twice as easy to drive - but would only run on 5 percent of the roads. 6 The Macintosh car owners would get expensive Microsoft upgrades to their cars, which would make their cars run much slower. 7 The oil, petrol and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single “general car default” warning light. 8 The air bag system would say, “are you sure?” before going off. 9 If you were involved in a crash, you would have no idea what happened. 10 You would have to pass an advanced driving test, Ctrl, Alt, Delete…repeat

ELECTIONED OUT THIS IS A NONPARTISAN JOKE THAT CAN BE ENJOYED BY All PARTIES! NOT ONLY THAT-- it is POLITICALLY CORRECT!! While walking down the street one day a “Member of Parliament” is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. ‘Welcome to heaven,’ says St. Peter.. ‘Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you.’ ‘No problem, just let me in,’ says the man. ‘Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we’ll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.’ ‘Really, I’ve made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,’ says the MP. ‘I’m sorry, but we have our rules.’ And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.

Well son, just eat the cheese and…

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne. Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly and nice guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises.... The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. ‘Now it’s time to visit heaven.’ So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns. ‘Well, then, you’ve spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.’ The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers: ‘Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell’ So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and he’s in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above. The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. ‘I don’t understand,’ stammers the MP. ‘Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time.. Now there’s just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?’ The devil looks at him, smiles and says, ‘Yesterday we were campaigning... ... Today you voted.’
