THE BIG PRINT PLAN — PAY AS YOU GO IS A GREAT SUCCESS The recently released Big Print Plan by the Canon UK Distributor, Velmex has seen impressive sales of the UK’s only pay as you go large format rental scheme. The high level of support and ease of upgrading products is thought to be the reason the plan is exceeding sales expectations. Velmex the UK distributor for Canon’s large format printers has witnessed a significant sales response to the recently released Big Print Plan, pay as you go large format rental scheme. The Surrey based distributor devised the scheme for customers wanting an easy monthly payment solution to owning a large format printer. The Big Print Plan provides customers with a fully inclusive service and support solution, whilst offering a simple monthly billing system for rental and ink usage. ‘The introduction of the Big Print Plan gives users a fully supported, cash flow friendly approach to large format printing’ says Brendan Wright, Velmex Sales Manager. ‘We have been very pleased with the customer take up and customer installations are well ahead of projected levels. The Big Print Plan has been very successful with both first time large format users and experienced high volume users. We have already seen clients upgrade within the scheme to meet their customers requirements. One client using a 24” printer on the Big Print Plan soon discovered a higher than planned volume of print meant a 44” printer was quickly needed. The Big Print Plan offers an easy solution, as customers can upgrade with no penalty. We simply delivered a 44” unit and removed the existing product.‘ All Big Print Plan installations have a highly specified support function that provides total support from the moment of installation. It’s this high level of support which is intrinsic to the success of the Big Print Plan. ‘The advanced reporting and support system is a standard feature with the Big Print Plan and allows us to take our customer support to a new level’

says Mark Keeley, Managing Director of Velmex. ‘We have completed a number of very successful support issues that would have been impossible to detect with a standard installation. We noticed that one customer’s ink usage was much higher than expected for the volume of prints produced. One of our technicians alerted the customer, connected into the system and found that the user had accidently set the wrong output settings. Within minutes we had corrected the problem and reduced the customers ink usage by over 50%. This level of customer support is only possible because of the advanced reporting system built into the Big Print Plan’. The Big Print Plan allows customers to rent the printer and only pay for the ink they have used. There is no large upfront outlay for ink. All inks, waste ink cartridges, print heads, warranty and support are provided for the full rental term. As part of the ongoing Big Print Plan agreement Velmex will update the printer software, drivers and add new media profiles as they become available. For any significant software upgrades they will not only install but also train customers on the upgrade. Mark said ‘The Big Print Plan customers will always have the latest options available to them giving them the best possible chance to maximise profit from their printer’. The Big Print Plan covers the entire Canon image PROGRAF LFP range from 17” to 60”, including the twelve colour photo printers, the 24” to 60” eight colour production printers, all the 24” to 44” CAD printers and even Canon’s large format scan to print /copy systems. T The eND of May, five employees from Sharp Electronics in the UK will set out to cycle the exact route of the epic Giro d’Italia, raising funds for the hundreds of thousands of people affected by the tsunami in Japan. The three week long Giro is one of cycling’s most romantic but gruelling challenges, and covering 3,498km from Turin down to Sicily and back up to Milan, the 2011 edition is universally agreed to be amongst the toughest ever. The Sharp team will be part of the larger Gran Corsa d’Italia event, conceived by Sharp UK managing director and veteran fundraiser, Paul Molyneux. Overall 60 riders are taking part in the Gran Corsa, raising money for Sharp UK’s official charity partner, The Prostate Cancer Charity, to fight the most common cancer in men in the UK. However, in light of the recent devastating events in Japan and the company’s roots in the country, the team of five employees from Sharp Electronics in the UK felt compelled to raise additional funds for the Red Cross Japan tsunami appeal. Paul Molyneux commented, “The scale of the disaster in Japan has really shocked us, particularly as many at Sharp work closely with Japanese colleagues. Sponsoring the five Sharp riders provides a focus for any suppliers, partners and stakeholders, as well as staff within the company,

who want to do something for those most affected by the disaster. Obviously as a highly developed nation, Japan has the capacity to rebuild infrastructure without financial help from outside, but on a human scale, there are thousands of people who need every help they can get to overcome the devastating physical and mental toll taken by the tsunami. We’re under no illusion that the difficulties we will tackle over three weeks on the bike pale into insignificance compared to what those people are facing as they look to rebuild shattered lives, but we do believe we can make a difference.” Donate at www.redcross.org.uk/japansharp. www.sharp.co.uk

Memories book in aid of Cancer Caring Centres Leicestershire based printer Taylor Bloxham has signed an agreement to sponsor Memories, the art book that is being specially produced by a unique creative group to raise funds and awareness for the amazing work that is carried out every day at Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres all over the UK. Taylor Bloxham will be responsible for the print production of this beautiful art book entitled Memories because of the stories it relates that are powerfully supported by one off works of art. The proceeds of sales of the book, which will initially go on sale as a limited first edition, will go to the charity. The Maggie Keswick Jencks Cancer Caring Centres Trust was founded by Maggie Keswick Jencks in 1995 to provide support for people affected by cancer, their families, carers and friends to empower people to live with, through and beyond cancer. Maggie’s has centres in 11 locations in the UK with four new openings planned in the near future. Edited by Garrick Webster, one of the four creatives who conceived and launched the project, Memories will explore the thoughts and experiences of individuals who have survived cancer, as well as those of people who have lost loved ones. There will be 12 stories, each looking at one person’s recollection of a particular day in the struggle against cancer. For each of these unique ‘Memories’ a dozen leading artists, illustrators and designers will each be creating their own visual response.

In total there will be 12 touching stories and 144 pieces of artwork contained within Memories, which is being printed and bound by Taylor Bloxham free of charge. Speaking about the Memories project, and Taylor Bloxham’s involvement, Taylor Bloxham Sales Director Graham Farrell said, “Cancer is something that affects one in three of us at some time in our lives. We at Taylor Bloxham have always embraced projects such as Memories and when Garrick Webster first approached us a few months back, his explanation of the project and enthusiasm for it meant it was an easy decision to get involved with Memories.” Garrick Webster, co-founder of the Memories project, said: “The support of Taylor Bloxham and Graham Farrell’s team has given an incredible boost to the Memories project. We approached them after seeing some previous Taylor Bloxham print work and the quality in terms of colour and finishing was incredible. We’re proud to be working with Taylor Bloxham and their support means we can focus our creativity on producing a unique collection of stories and artwork that will be a joy to own. Joy is perhaps a strange word to use in the same discussion as cancer but we at Memories passionately believe that the more open we can make our collective understanding of this terrible illness, the easier it will be to cope with when cancer strikes those we love.” The artists featured in Memories include Vaughan Oliver, Si Scott, Ollie Munden, Deanne Cheuk,

Simon Spilsbury, Emily Forgot and many others. Taylor Bloxham has a history that spans over 70 years, during which time it has built up a reputation for high quality print. Taylor Bloxham, together with its subsidiaries C&R Printing Services and FastAnt Marketing Materials Management, provide design, pre-press, litho and digital printing, finishing, direct mail and logistics services to its extensive client listing. Memories will be published in September 2011 and pre-orders can be made through the project site www.memories.subism.co.uk from July.

PRINTING LOGISTICS COMPANY IN HOT AIR BALLOON RECORD ATTEMPT The Palletways Group, which provides express distribution services for small consignments of palletised freight to the printing industry, has taken cross channel delivery to a ‘higher’ level, after heading up a successful world record breaking hot air balloon flight between the UK and France. Fifty hot air balloons made it across the Channel from Dover to Calais to be officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records for the largest ever group of balloons to attempt the crossing. This represents the first Guinness Book of Record attempt for the most hot air balloons to cross the English Channel. An array of balloons launched from Lydden Hill Race Circuit in Kent to commence the 4 hour flight from Dover to Calais. Leading the balloons was the 61 ft tall smoke breathing dragon shaped balloon developed for Palletways. The balloon, nicknamed ‘Slick’ to reflect the company’s highly professional and seamless national and European distribution services, is the biggest one of its kind in the world and the only one in the UK to feature a glass bottomed basket. Said Paul Komuro, marketing consultant to Palletways: “It is an amazing feeling to be part of history today. Not only has this event been an exhilarating experience and an amazing spectacle, it has also presented an opportunity to support three very worthwhile charities including the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund and the Halow Project.” Ian Sharpe, brainchild and organiser of the world record attempt: A retired Police officer and balloon pilot, Ian has been flying balloons for seven years. After one too many accidents on his motorbike, Ian’s wife suggested he abandon the bike and do something else, so he took up ballooning instead. Ian does most of his flying in the Surrey, Kent and Sussex areas, but has been fortunate enough to fly in some exotic locations including Dubai, the Austrian Alps, Syria and over the Sri Lankan jungle. In 2008 he inflated his

balloon at the Colloseum in Rome. Ian flew across the Channel in 2005, a flight that took less than an hour. History of cross channel balloon flights: In 1785 a French balloonist, Jean Pierre Blanchard, and his American co-pilot, John Jefferies, became the first to fly across the English Channel. In these early days of ballooning, the English Channel was considered the first step to long distance ballooning so this was a large benchmark in ballooning history. Unfortunately, in the same year Pilatre de Rozier (the world’s first balloonist) was killed in his attempt at crossing the channel. His balloon exploded half an hour after take off due to the experimental design of using a hydrogen balloon and hot air balloon tied together. Last year American adventurer Jonathan R.Trappe used 55 chloroprene ‘cloudbuster’ balloons to cross the channel. For further details of the chosen charities please visit their websites at, www.halowproject.org.uk, www.rafbf.org, www.mariecurie.org.uk, www.rnli.org.uk.

Image2Output with Roland DG

iMAge2ouTpuT was founded seven years ago by Mike Warnes and Mark Middlebrook. The duo used their considerable experience to develop the company specifically to distribute and maintain a strong catalogue of digital imaging, CGI and 3D products. Since its inception it has rapidly built up a strong customer base of users within the printing and proofing sectors. The Hatfield based company has now added the Roland VersaUV LEC UVcurable and the VersaCAMM VS series of wide-format integrated print and cut solutions to their portfolio Wanting to extend its services further into the digitally generated and colour managed proofing and prototyping areas, Image2Output plans to grow its position in the packaging sector. It is set to achieve this with the addition of the two families of integrated print and cut solutions which enable the fast production of accurate output onto a broad range of materials. Image2Output sees the Roland VersaUV LEC-330 and LEC-540 as invaluable options for proofing and packaging mock-ups, with inline cutting and creasing and the ability to output onto virtually all materials saving time and money, as well as removing chemicals from the pre-press area. These integrated solutions feature flexible UV-curable ink with a high opacity white and clear varnish that can be used for matte and gloss textures and finishes. LED curing means that even the most sensitive and delicate materials can be printed, making it suitable for proofing onto the final media and accommodating packaging substrates up to 1mm thick. The VersaCAMM VS series is well suited to all applications ranging from posters

and displays down to intricate labels and decals. The range is represented by four integrated print and cut machines in a choice of widths, and with three ink configurations of dual CMYK, CMYKLcLM and six colours plus metallic and white. These compact systems start with the VS-300 at 762mm wide, followed by the VS-420 at 1.07m and the 1.37m VS-540, complemented by the VS-640’s 1.62m, and all benefit from Roland’s long lasting, durable Eco-Sol Max inks. Both the VersaUV LEC and the VersaCAMM VS series can be integrated with industry standard colour management solutions for accurate proofing and packaging mock-ups. Their integrated contour cutting simplifies workflow, with exacting tolerances also making the machines suitable for short run labelling applications. Both machines include Roland’s VersaWorks dedicated production software and RIP, with libraries of special textures and finishes, plus spot colour emulation. “The growing demand for foolproof, user friendly solutions for proofing and prototyping is accommodated by our latest wide-format print and cut solutions. Thus, the appointment of Image2Output as a partner comes at exactly the right time as more and more companies are wanting to move across to colour managed digital systems,” states Steve Chappell, UK Business Development Manager at Roland DG (UK). “Because we can offer high quality, low-cost alternatives to the pre-press sector, we’re witnessing a significant shift to chemistry-free proofing which brings environmental benefits as well as convenience to the commercial print arena.” www.rolanddg.co.uk

bpif to streamline management structure

The BPIF is to streamline its senior management structure following the departure of Michael Johnson as Chief Executive at the end of June this year. The changes will mean that just two executive directors will now report to new CEO Kathy Woodward. The changes follow a decision by Commercial Director Richard Gray to volunteer for redundancy effective from the end of June this year and the retirement of Corporate Affairs Director Andrew Brown at the end of March. However both Richard Gray and Andrew Brown have signed contracts to support the BPIF off-payroll for a minimum number of days’ work in their specialist areas. Richard Gray will work as the BPIF’s Commercial Adviser and Andrew Brown as Public Affairs Adviser. Chief Executive-designate Kathy Woodward says: “I am keen to see a simpler management structure adopted at the BPIF, with a smaller top team and more devolved responsibility to regional directors and departmental managers. Michael Johnson and I are now putting this into place. Although this means that two of our most experienced employees will no longer be operating at executive director level, I am delighted that they will continue to be part of our team. Both Richard and Andy will provide vital support in relation to the all-important areas of business development and lobbying respectively. The contracts we have made with them will ensure that their talent and expertise remains available to the BPIF and its members.” For more information on the BPIF, visit: www.britishprint.com.

DUPLO’s ANNUAL CUSTOMER SURVEY FINDINGS DupLo UK have announced ‘extremely positive’ results from the company’s annual customer survey. 100% of all customers surveyed commented that their experience with Duplo had been positive and 98% said they would be ‘returning as Duplo customers’ in the future. The survey, encompassing questions regarding Duplo’s sales, service and marketing functions, was conducted with over eighty Duplo end user and dealer customers from 2010/11. The highest scores were given for Duplo’s sales staff including their product knowledge and understanding of customer needs. Duplo’s new feature rich website also made the top 5 rankings. Indeed, Duplo’s list of improvements from the previous year’s survey was surrounding the company’s marketing performance. As well as the website, Duplo’s brand image, product samples and product literature made 4 of the top 5 yearly improvements. Every aspect of the Duplo business that was covered in the questionnaire received results of over 4, from a possible 5, where 5 was rated as ‘excellent’. The company’s Managing Director Tony Lock feels the results of the survey are due to an aligned company focus toward customer needs. “Since I took over the role in 2009 I have focused my managers and the UK team on achieving a customer focus within the business. We have strong people who know the pressures that UK printers are up against in the current climate, and whether it be our administration, service or sales staff we are consistent in our willingness to help our customers.” The company’s Digital Finishing and Office Division (DFOD) which was formed in 2010 recorded some extremely positive results. The division, a combination of Duplo’s dealer and telesales function, performed extremely highly with regard to sales support for accounts, delivery and technical support. “The results confirm that we are doing the right things. The changes that we have made over the past year, namely the formation of the DFOD team, a huge increase in branding presence and the introduction of a fully dedicated operator trainer, seems to have really borne fruit,” comments Lock. “What this year’s survey allows me and my management team to do, is to look to implement changes for 2011/12 which will show similar results this time next year. We are constantly striving for perfection.” Factors regarded as ‘important when buying finishing’ were still reliability, cost and ease of use. Duplo’s championing of Automated Precision finishing technology seems to ring true with a vast improvement, customer wide, of the ‘ease of use’ of Duplo solutions. The results also showed an improvement of Duplo products versus customer expectation to 4.12 out of 5. Duplo also announced that they would be focusing on product demonstrations and installations throughout 2011. “We will have a dedicated showroom manager from June 1st and we have launched Duplo’s “Service 2011” charter in January to focus on making our existing service team, which is the largest in print finishing, as efficient as possible, as we strive toward a world-class standard.” “Overall we are delighted with the results of the survey. Everything is now 4+ and we will spend the next 12 months striving to be nearer 5 out of 5. It was a fantastic 2010, roll on 2011!” Concludes Tony. Duplo have recently been awarded the 10 years Investors in People award, and again have featured in the Sunday Times ‘Best Companies To Work For’ survey. Extra information The survey was carried out by Duplo’s receptionist Louisa Wooldridge from a scripted set of questions. Duplo’s 2009/10 survey incuded Duplo’s top 20 direct sales customers over the previous year, and was carried out in November 2009. The 2010/11 survey expanded this quota with 57 direct sales customers, 10 dealers and 16 telesales customers being interviewed. The survey was carried out between November 2010 and March 2011. The full results of this survey are available upon request to pjolly@duplointernational.com.

PHOTOSHOP CS5 NOW AVAILABLE IN TABLETS ADobe Systems has announced the Photoshop Touch Software Development Kit (SDK) inviting developers worldwide to create mobile and tablet applications that interact with Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Photoshop CS5 Extended software, uniting the fun and interactive experience of touch devices with the power and precision of Photoshop. The Photoshop Touch SDK and a new scripting engine in Photoshop CS5 now opens the door for Android BlackBerry Tablet OS and iOS apps to drive and interact with Photoshop on the desktop. Adobe also launched Creative Suite 5.5, a significant mid-cycle release to the industry leading design and development software for virtually every creative workflow across print, video, mobile and online media. Using the Touch SDK, Adobe has developed three initial Photoshop CS5 companion apps for Apple iPad: Adobe Color Lava for Photoshop, Adobe Eazel for Photoshop and Adobe Nav for Photoshop. The apps are designed to enable users to create custom colour swatches, paint and drive popular Photoshop tools from tablet devices. “Our research shows that creatives are adopting tablets faster than any other group and we heard loud and clear that they want to use their devices to interact with Photoshop, the tool they depend on most of all,” said John Loiacono, senior vice president and general manager, Digital Media Solutions, Adobe. “The apps that we have announced show some of the creative ways tablets can work with Photoshop and over the next few months Photoshop’s vibrant developer community is going to dazzle us with innovative apps that further integrate tablet devices into creative workflows.” Photoshop SDK Encourages Creative Development Adobe has developed three initial Photoshop Touch apps: Adobe Color Lava, Adobe Eazel and Adobe Nav. Adobe Color Lava, allows creative professionals to use their fingertips to mix colours on the iPad, creating custom colour swatches and themes to transfer back into Photoshop. Adobe Eazel, which takes advantage of cutting edge painting technology, lets digital artists create rich realistic paintings with their fingertips and introduces a new kind of interaction between “wet” and “dry” paints. These paintings can then be

sent directly to Photoshop CS5 for compositing or for taking the artwork further. Lastly, Adobe Nav increases workflow efficiency by letting users select and control Photoshop tools using the iPad as the input surface, customise the toolbar, browse and zoom in on up to 200 open Photoshop files or easily create new files. All three applications take advantage of the iPad tablet’s touch screen for a truly immersive, tactile, on the go experience. While the first applications available are for the Apple iPad and the iOS, the Photoshop Touch SDK makes development possible on other devices, including Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. Utilising the Touch SDK, developers will have wide access to Photoshop functionality with the freedom to innovate and create new apps or add capabilities to existing ones. Adobe has already engaged with a number of developers across the industry to incorporate tablets and other devices into creative workflows that empower Photoshop users in new and groundbreaking ways.

priciNg AND AvAiLAbiLiTy Developers can access the free Adobe Photoshop Touch SDK today for Windows and Mac OS platforms on the Adobe Application Manager at www.adobe.com/devnet/photoshop. Current Photoshop CS5 customers can experience the value of the connection to devices by downloading and installing a free patch available on www.adobe.com or via the Adobe Application Manager, beginning early May, 2011. The Adobe Color Lava, Adobe Eazel and Adobe Nav applications for Photoshop are also expected to be available from May 2011, ranging in price, on the iTunes App Store. For more information or to sign up to be notified when the apps become available for purchase, visit www.photoshop.com. Adobe Photoshop CS5 and CS5 Extended are available through Adobe Authorised Resellers, the Adobe Store and Adobe Direct Sales. Estimated street price for Adobe Photoshop CS5 is £548 and £794 for Photoshop CS5 Extended. Adobe also announced a new flexible subscription based pricing plan. With subscription pricing customers can use Adobe Photoshop for as little as £28 per month. For more information about Subscription Editions, visit www.adobe.com/go/cssubscription.

Real Innovation@Xerox “jusT help make my work day run smoothly.” That’s what Xerox Corporation often hears from clients who are trying to balance the frenetic pace of business today with the need to get basic work done. Simplifying the workplace so customers can allocate more time and resources to their core business is fundamental to the innovation incubating today in Xerox’s labs – and is the purpose of prototype customer care software revealed by the company. The software uses Web-based 3D virtual reality imaging to give Xerox customers instant access to live support for their printer or multifunction device. Xerox scientists say the prototype pinpoints ways to ease customer frustration, shorten customer care calls and free up workers to focus on their real business. To help develop the prototype, ethnography researchers at Xerox’s Research Centre Europe studied the way customers responded to printer issues and

examined the calls coming in to service centres. “It’s the depth of understanding you get from ethnographic studies that allows you to design technology like this that can revolutionise product support”, says Monica Beltrametti, Director European Research. “It promises to reduce interruptions in every day office work allowing our customers to focus on getting their real work done.”

how virTuAL heLp worKs By pressing the ‘Help’ button on the screen of a networked multifunction system, customers can initiate a call to the support desk. As the agent accepts the incoming call, the system uploads a 3D model of the printer while gathering and displaying data on the status of the machine. The system simultaneously uploads the same 3D model on the screen at the customer site so the customer can view the image while talking

to the help desk agent – leading to a real-time multimedia conversation. Xerox is at the forefront of developing embedded and remote diagnostic services and offers several solutions including PhaserSMART, a customer self help diagnostic tool, and Command Center, a tool that feeds information directly from the Xerox iGen4 and the Xerox Nuvera digital printing systems to customer service technicians for faster support. This new virtual help desk prototype builds on the successful interactive capability launched with the Xerox WorkCentre 7500 series called Xerox Online Support Assistant, which provides instant access to online support. The virtual help desk is a research project in support of Xerox’s continued commitment to develop and incorporate the latest customer care technology in its printers. DUPLO’S UPGRADE TO ENTRY LEVEL GUILLOTINE

THE UK'S FAVOUR ITE PRINT SHOW

10 to12 May Harrogate

Duplo International has just announced a small but hugely useful improvement to its IDEAL guillotine range. Its entry level A3 format guillotines have an increased table depth from 390mm to of 435mm. According to Angela Osborne, Digital Finishing and Office Products manager at Duplo International, the new format is a big plus, “It may not sound like much but for anyone using SRA3 paper sizes, it gives you the ability to cut down to A3 – something that was just not possible on the previous generation of these guillotines”. Like all IDEAL guillotines the new IDEAL 4305, 4315 and 4350 come with the assurance of the ‘Made in Germany’ stamp. For occasional use the 4305 is the fully manual model. For those with a more demanding workload there is the electrically powered blade 4315 version and for print shops looking for an electric clamp and blade drive there is the 4350. All three models will cut a full ream of 70gsm paper and have a comprehensive range of safety features which IDEAL call their Safety Cutting System (SCS). Angela continues “Last year we introduced a digital display on the electric models to ensure accurate positioning of the back gauge to within 1/100th of a cm. Couple this with the LED cutting line, transparent safety guard and two handed operation and you have the most accurate and safest selection of small format guillotines on the market”. To show off the new range IDEAL have produced a product demonstration video visible at www.ideal-uk.co.uk. Retail prices for the new machines start at £1,295 for the manual 4305 and rise to £3,515 for the fully electric 4350. IDEAL guillotines are available from dealers nationwide. www.duplouk.co.uk

Duplo’s new multi-function finishing solution The DC-745, from Duplo International, is the latest high speed multi finishing solution for high volume digital colour print. It is operated from a PC Controller to produce an array of finished materials including business cards, greetings cards, photo gift products and general business marketing collateral. There are a number of new features including cross sheet perforating, either fully across the sheet, or partially perforated areas up to 15 times on one sheet. This is ideal for tear off sections, coupons and vouchers to be incorporated into direct mail and trans-promotional pieces. Also, up to four independently controlled tools allow users to switch easily between combinations of scoring, perforating, micro-perforating (new) and slit-scoring – another new feature which is partial slitting for card stock commonly required for greetings cards. As well as performing up to 15 cuts, 15 creases and 10 slits

through the sheet, the multi-function tooling provides the user with greater flexibility, for more specialised applications as well as customer created templates. The DC-745’s automated job set-up, from a barcode printed on the sheet, effects changeovers in less than 20 seconds. The greater intelligence of this machine means the required finishing settings are uploaded from memory along with the tooling positions. The CCD camera reads the ‘true image’ position on the sheet, to process jobs with great accuracy, up to speeds of 50 sheets per minute. With an eye towards higher productivity levels, input and output capacity is increased 50%. Trim waste from the sheet passes through a second knife system that cuts and compacts into a bin below the machine, to allow longer runs between unloading. www.duplointernational.com

he firsT ever Sign & Digital UK awards and networking evening held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham saw the industries leading sign and display companies rewarded for their innovative and creative work. The cream of the graphic display community enjoyed a sit down dinner with first class entertainment and networking opportunities. The shortlist was announced a month ago and Rudi Blackett, event director thanked all who entered for making it such an interesting competition and congratulated all the shortlisted finalists and winners.

wiNNers The winners for this year’s Sign & Digital UK Awards & Networking Event 2011 are: Best Individual Sign Project Vision Visual Solutions Best Multiple Sign Project Photocast Products Best Vehicle Wrapping Project Raccoon Best Wide Format Print Project Service Graphics Best Textile Printing Project The Wild Group Best New Use of Wide Format Print Icon Rising Star Award Aggregate Industries The Green Award Sign 2000 Best Wide Format Printing Company Hollywood Monster Best Sign Company Sign Box Rudi commented on the night, “We are thrilled to be able to deliver a first class evening like this for our customers and the industry as a whole. To be able to network also with peers in a relaxed and friendly environment and showcase the huge talent that our industry is fostering is a real privilege and we hope to make this awards evening an annual event.”

We were more than a little intrigued to receive an invitation from Merlin Transfers to see what they were cooking at the show – would you believe, dog and cat bowls, cookie jars, money boxes? Now, we are used to printing transfers onto mugs and T shirts but an individual heat press is needed for each of these and there was no sign of any unusual heat presses on the stand…and then we spotted it…a halogen oven lurking on the floor, and for the benefit of some of our gentlemen readers this is the round object that will have appeared on your kitchen worktop in the past year since this style of cooking has become popular (at last I can convince our beloved editor that no home is complete without one). It would seem that ‘somebody’ within Merlin spotted the possibility of using a halogen cooker to produce dye sublimation products. They can supply a rubber belt with the oven, much the same as the rubber that wraps round a mug in your mug press, to hold the die sub print in place and there you have it. Admittedly the cooking time is longer than that of a T shirt or mug heat press but the initial outlay more than makes up for that, and you can take it home to cook the Sunday roast! They have been busy at Merlin since we last met as they also have a new vinyl for T shirt printing - PUFF – applied in the normal way but when removing the backing the vinyl puffs up to give a raised effect. Nice to see something a little different www.merlintransfers.com 01702 600 200

The BPIF’s Financial Alliance team of experts will also be hosting a Finance Clinic where printers can ‘drop in’ for impartial advice on finance and funding, tax issues, mergers and acquisitions, debt recovery as well as other related issues, and benefit from a range of short informative presentations. Other trade associations such as the BAPC, APCOM, IPIA and FOPAP will also be on hand to offer advice and support to members. Located on stand B208 will be the ‘Litho Technology Theatre’ where offset manufacturers and distributors, accompanied by their customers will run videos, demonstrations and case study-style presentations. Sessions will feature presentations from manroland, Ricoh, IFS, RedTie Proskills, BPIF and IPIA. In addition, in recognition of the growth in the digital wide format market, Northprint 2011 will present the latest innovations in the dedicated Wide Format Applications Showcase. To conclude the event, Northprint will play host to the PrintIT! 2011 Awards Ceremony, which will take place on Thursday 12th May in the Royal Hall theatre. Celebrating the best in young potential talent, the awards will recognise all the finalist students and their teachers who participated in this year’s competition, and present category winners with individual awards as well as prizes for their schools in the form of print-related equipment. Prior to the ceremony, the students and teachers will have the opportunity to visit the exhibits and industry attractions, providing them with a greater insight into the many career opportunities that the UK print industry offers. Adds Trevor Crawford, “While presenting the quality line up of the latest industry technologies on the show floor remains essential to an event of this nature, we recognise the need to deliver even more value for the visitors who commit to a day out of the office. With this in mind, we’ve made a considerable commitment to deliver a packed agenda of seminars, industry debates, interactive showcase applications and case study workshops to present a host of additional educational, learning and networking experiences for visitors to Northprint 2011.” www.iirx.co.uk

Konica Minolta’s reality experience At Northprint Konica Minolta will be demonstrating its experience in augmented reality, inviting visitors to journey through the sights of Harrogate, ending with a presentation of a unique photobook. In the ‘Print-for-Profit’ zone visitors can see innovations for paper, colour and even smell, and in an instant they will be transported to Harrogate’s famous Betty’s Tea Room. The Konica Minolta stand will show visitors new and innovative ways in which the latest digital print technologies can increase the effectiveness of print communications for their customers. For the in-plant operator this makes print more relevant for their stakeholders and for commercial printers it can generate new, profitable business. Visitors can see how the integration of cutting edge digital output can be merged with conventional offset production to create ‘print on demand’ solutions for multi-dimensional activities such as direct marketing. Demonstrations on the stand will show how Konica Minolta is able to fully optimise Business Process workflows for a wide range of industries including healthcare, education, financial services, legal and public sector. Commenting on Konica Minolta’s presence at Northprint, Clare Revell, Head of Production Print said, “The Konica Minolta approach to customer intimacy is key in providing outstanding equipment, only through customer intimacy can we truly understand what our customers want and need to drive their business forward, gain competitive advantage and become even more profitable. The good, the bad and the ugly

Sometimes I feel I may be a bit harsh in judgement of some customers, but judging by feedback from recent columns, it’s an opinion shared by several at the sharp end of the digital print shop challenge. Martin Christie writes…

w

e Are cALLeD print providers or facilitators, but in reality we are often more like ancient alchemists who were expected to turn base metal into pure gold. The challenge is being able to evaluate the embedded quality of a file with limited input information, and to turn it, inevitably at short notice, into something presentable as well as accurate to the customer’s expectations. The gap between what the customer has provided and what he expects to print from it can be miniscule or massive because there is no direct control or influence on the input, and the customer is always going to question print quality output before the integrity of his original. You can almost place customers in certain types: those that know nothing but are prepared to learn or at least listen, and those that think they already know it all and will never be convinced otherwise. In between these two extremes, there are the main client base, at various points along the line. In an ideal world you would have a customer you could either educate, or would come with perfect knowledge skills to the print room. Sadly we work in a world not only far from perfect, but more likely to stray further from it through pressure of time and money. The last month has seen some perfect examples of the whole customer spectrum from the very good to the dismal. Perversely it’s the dismal ones that occupy more time and tribulation, and consequently usually less profit. When you get a perfect file that prints flawlessly it’s such a surprise that it’s a bonus. It’s also a reference point for the quality of regular output. If one file can be so good, how can others be so bad? It has to be down to the basic digital information input to the printer. Such was the vibrance and colour accuracy of a recent artist’s computer generated images, that even she was taken aback. Same printer, same paper, same settings as a previous customer was so disappointed with. Common denominator? Input. In other words rubbish in, rubbish out, to put it politely. There is however, no easy way to explain this to Mr. Know-It-All. Anyone who knows a successful formula, do drop me a line. It’s ironically often easier working with a customer with no digital information – and hence no expectations. Recently the new owners of a

Brighton bar needed to generate new signage and artwork, but wanted to retain the established logo. Due to the circumstances of the takeover, they had no previous files to inherit. It’s not an unusual situation as many established businesses may have signage created long before the computer, or just lost in time, moves and relocation. The first thing to do was check out the font used in the logo, and as the largest original was swinging outside the premises, best thing to do was photograph it and then try and match the image on the computer. Some fonts are easily spotted, particularly those old favourites of the home designer in Word – the painfully loud and unforgiving Impact, or the inappropriately named and not at all amusing Comic Sans. Others are more obscure. If you’re a font expert you may immediately identify it as OldPerculiar Condensed, or something like it, if not there is an alternative to trawling through Suitcase libraries trying to match individual letters. If you haven’t found it yet, the website ‘What The Font’, is an invaluable resource. Simply upload a small image of the word to the site and it will give you a selection of visual matches with references. You have to inspect the match very carefully, some fonts may differ only slightly and on some letters. With particular brand logos, it is possible that some letters may have been modified to create something original. What the Font was able to identify the characters as belonging to Chesterfield, but had it not, then the logo would need to be recreated, and as it was to be used not only on letterheads and menus, but larger posters and banners, a vector based output would be preferable. This is not a major problem for an in-house designer skilled in Adobe Illustrator, or even using paths in Photoshop. But without such skills there is an easier and therefore cheaper option. As mentioned in a previous column, I have been using Corel Draw Graphic Suite X5 for an evaluation period as an alternative to the Adobe products and finding it does some useful tricks. Turning a JPG into a Bitmap and then quickly tracing the outline into a vector image is one of them.

May 2011 | COPY SHOP NEWS | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23

One of the advantages of the way Corel Draw displays its workspace is that you can see and easily control the various tool settings, with a before and after view. It can also then save the output in various transferable formats, including, incidentally Adobe Illustrator. Taken from the orignal camera image of the bar signage, this JPG was cleaned up and then turned into a PDF over two metres long for a banner and reproduced perfectly. Even more challenging I was able to turn out an acceptable reproduction of a window sign for a customer with a new shop who only had a slightly dog-eared business card to show. He could get the proper digital image from Italy, but it would take time and he wanted to advertise his lines immediately. That’s a typical challenge for the copy shop – someone at the counter with a hard copy card or flyer, and not wanting to hear that he has to wait for a designer’s time or incur the cost. So any quick, cost effective trick pays dividends. The vast majority of files brought to the counter by customers are pixel-based in one form or another, whether digital photographs, scans or web images. As they invariably require some enlargement, being able to manipulate some of them to print better is extremely useful. In making the software compatible with Adobe files, it makes Corel a serious alternative to the now seriously expensive Creative Suite CS5, especially as you not only have to buy the complete package from Adobe to access all the possibilities, you also need to train some how to use it. My experience is that Corel Draw is a lot more user friendly, as you can do more in one application, importing different types of file, and once you get the hang of making best use of the workspace and how the individual tools work.

v i v i d.

Alongside Corel Draw, in the X5 Suite, is the photographic application, Photo Paint, and I have found this particularly useful for correcting scans at source. Importing the scan directly into Photo Paint and then using the Image Adjustment Lab, you can have quick delicate control over colour, hue and density. All of this you can do in Photoshop, but instead of the adjustment actions being displayed individually, in the Corel version all are in the same workspace. This makes it so much easier to see the effect of even slight alternations, and undo them if necessary, or compensate as required. Like Photoshop you can save snapshots to remind you what you have done. The Corel Image Adjustment Lab is very similar to the layout of a RAW file processor, or even Adobe Lightroom, in that it makes fine control of image manipulation that much easier, and anything that makes things easier on a computer has to be good. Easier means efficient, which means the economic use of time. At the other end of the customer spectrum from the lovely piece of well presented artist’s work was the client’s logo. This was undoubtedly created in web-based form and needed to be reproduced for leaflets, stickers and other promotional material. It came in the form of a word document so you can judge the calibre of the creator accordingly, and when a proof was produced, hardly surprisingly, the colour was “wrong”.

Apparently this wasn’t a surprise to the client either, as every other printer he had tried had got it wrong too! Maybe there’s a connection there… As mentioned in the last column, that is why it is vital to have some technical tools as back-up. Experience is one thing, but being able to wave a gadget at a customer, especially one they can’t understand, is invaluable. If a client can’t provide a Pantone reference number or a hard copy proof for checking, you cannot expect to reproduce a digital file accurately. Monitor calibration is an absolute essential, so you can be sure that what you are looking at is what you have been given. You cannot, however, have second sight to see what a client at a distance is looking at on his monitor. He may be looking at the “right” colour, but he may be the only one who is. As well as providing both the hardware and software, Colour Confidence have added more useful advice on colour management on their website since last month, so it’s worth another look, and if you register, you will receive updates. www.colourconfidence.com

Premier Paper clears the way to go green preMier Paper, has announced the launch of ‘paper and the environment’, its brand new environmental website. Premier has created an online resource that brings together essential information and signposting for printers. Premier’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Manager, Paddy Burns said: “As concerns for the environment have become a real part of everyday business, demands to prove a business’s environmental credentials have also become routine. We have helped our customers to define and establish their own green strategies over the years, with our input ranging from answering simple questions right through to consultancy, to prepare them for their own environmental accreditation. “A simple Google search of ‘paper’ and ‘environment’ will bring up 315 million results. Most of them are irrelevant to professionals buying paper in the UK, and that is the inspiration for us putting our environmental knowledge, expertise and contacts together in one easily accessible place. Anyone searching for information will now be able to easily find relevant material.” Premier Paper’s ‘paper and the environment’ website is accessible from the company’s main website and can also be found directly at www.paperandtheenvironment.co.uk.

AlphaGraphics Nottingham spurred to change AN enquiry from a public sector customer about Carbon Balanced papers has led AlphaGraphics Nottingham to convert its own stationery to a PaperCo product, Advocate Extreme White. “We had heard about Carbon Balanced Paper, so called in our local PaperCo account manager from Rothera & Brereton so that we could go to our customer with detailed information,” says Jeremy Thompson-Jewitt, managing director. “My team was briefed and we made the decision that this would work for us so we are in the process of adopting Advocate Extreme White for all our stationery.” AlphaGraphics Nottingham had already measured its carbon footprint and committed to reducing it. The business is ISO 14001 certified and an FSC approved supplier which uses Chain of Custody stocks whenever it can. It is also

committed to waste reduction. “We believe offering Carbon Balanced Paper will be of huge interest to many of our customers and we are well prepared to take this message out to our market. On our web site we state that we do more than just design, copy and print – we help our customers communicate and for many a message about sustainability is really important these days,” says Mr ThompsonJewitt. “Carbon Balanced” means that the carbon impacts of a given product have been estimated and an equivalent amount of carbon is balanced through an ecological charity, The World Land Trust. Users of Carbon Balanced papers can use the The World Land Trust logo by registering their job at paperco.co.uk/carbonbalancedpaper.. AlphaGraphics Nottingham Tel: 0115 852 3603.

Sharp seeks talent through licensee scheme Sharp has announced an innovative licensee scheme that offers the opportunity for people to run their own document solutions business. The scheme targets talented sales people currently working outside of the Sharp family who want to have their own business but lack the capital, experience or risk appetite to take the initial step. Sharp will help with initial set up of the company, and will then process orders for Sharp’s award-winning multifunction devices, printers, solutions and managed print services. Sharp will also provide servicing, and take care of billing and revenue collection. All profit above the base licensee price will go to the licensee. A standout advantage of the scheme is that the customer and service bases will belong to the licensee. After three years, the licensee will be offered the opportunity to convert into a full dealership. Marcus I’Anson, Sharp’s UK Director of Information Systems, commented, “This is an extremely exciting venture, and is a unique proposition in the industry. For us, it offers the rare chance to develop an entirely new channel to market. For sales people with drive who want to take on the challenge of running their own business but don’t see how to begin, this represents a golden opportunity.” For more information, please contact Jeremy Brown; Jeremy.brown@sharp.eu tel: 07808 479082

service grAphics wiNs besT wiDe forMAT priNT projecT AT The sigN & DigiTAL uK AwArDs 2011 service Graphics, the large format print division of the St Ives Group, has won the “Best Wide Format Print Project” award at the Sign & Digital UK Awards, which took place on the13th April 2011. Its “Through the Wall” project for National Museums Liverpool involved the creation of large scale murals being installed at the Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool (ACC), to draw attention to the city’s cultural treasures and venues. Utilising a technique known as “trompe l’oeil” (trick of the eye), the brief demanded that the large scale graphics gave the impression of looking through the wall into another space, revealing some of the city’s most treasured artifacts and objects. The end result has been so well received that the project has been extended to other Liverpool city centre locations including, Tate Liverpool, Liverpool ONE. To create this very specific look and feel, the team selected to print the majority of the images onto self adhesive vinyl and then mount this onto 1mm Foamex. This provided a very thin print and smooth finish, and meant that the textured wall beneath would not show through and spoil the illusion. The illusion of seamless print was created by splitting the graphics into sections that could be butted together with a small image overlap that would cover the join. However, not all of the walls were the same, which meant a variety of techniques had to be employed, Scott King, Sales Director at Service Graphics explains: “Some of the graphics had to be installed on walls with painted breeze blocks, which were not only heavily textured, but were also very exposed to light. We opted for a combination of foil coated Foamboard and Raffa Canvas, which together provided the perfect finish. We think the results speak for themselves and winning this award is a fantastic confirmation of that.” Bill Watson, Head of Design at National Museums Liverpool added, “We are delighted that Service Graphics has been recognised and awarded for this project. They have proved to be an incredible source of advice and support, and have helped us solve some tricky problems, not least having to organise installation around some unexpected events, such as a General Election.”

Clever Host It was an elegant dinner party and the hostess had left nothing to chance, except that a little water had splashed on the marble floor. And when the waiter came into the dining room carrying the beautiful roast suckling pig, he slipped and fell flat, sending the roast flying. “Don’t worry, Thomas,” said the hostess calmly. “Just take the roast back to the kitchen and bring out the other one.”

What’s Up Doc? A doctor made it his regular habit to stop off at a bar for a hazelnut daiquiri on his way home. The bartender knew of his habit, and would always have the drink waiting at precisely 5:03pm. One afternoon, as the end of the work day approached, the bartender was dismayed to find that he was out of hazelnut extract. Thinking quickly, he threw together a daiquiri made with hickory nuts and set it on the bar. The doctor came in at his regular time, took one sip of the drink and exclaimed, ‘This isn’t a hazelnut daiquiri!’ ‘No, I’m sorry,’ replied the bartender, ‘it’s a hickory daiquiri, doc.

Back Seat Chef A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen. ‘Careful,’ he said, ‘CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!’ The wife stared at him. ‘What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?’ The husband calmly replied, ‘I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m driving.’

Jonah Jest Her husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months yet she stayed by his bedside every single day. When he came to, he motioned for her to come nearer. As she sat by him, he said, “You know what? You

If Your Family Tree Hasn’t any Forks Many many years ago, when I was twenty three, I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be. This widow had a grown-up daughter, who had hair of red. My father fell in love with her and soon the two were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life. My daughter was my mother for she was my father’s wife. To complicate the matters worse, although it brought me joy, I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became, a brother-in-law to dad. And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad. For if he was my uncle, then that also made him a brother, To the widow’s grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my step-mother. Father’s wife then had a son, who kept them on the run. And he became my grandson, for he was my daughter’s son. My wife is now my mother’s mother, and it makes me blue. Because, although she is my wife, she’s my grandmother too. If my wife is my grandmother, then I am her grandchild. And every time I think of it, it simply drives me wild. For now I have become, the strangest case you ever saw. As the husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa!

‘An Engineer and His Frog’ An engineer was crossing a road one day when a frog called out to him and said, ‘If you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess’. He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket. The frog spoke up again and said, ‘If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful princess, I will stay with you for one week.’ The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket. The frog then cried out, ‘If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I’ll stay with you and do ANYTHING you want.’ Again the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket. Finally, the frog asked, ‘What is the matter? I’ve told you I’m a beautiful princess, that I’ll stay with you for a week and do anything you want. Why won’t you kiss me?’ The engineer said, ‘Look I’m an engineer. I don’t have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog…now that’s cool.

Comprehending Engineers Two engineering students were walking across campus when one said, ‘Where did you get such a great bike?’ The second engineer replied, ‘Well, I was walking along yesterday minding my own business when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, ‘Take what you want.’ The second engineer nodded approvingly, ‘Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn’t have fit.’

A guy goes to a psychiatrist. ‘Doc, I keep having these alternating recurring dreams.

A Busy Day at the Office A businessman dragged himself home and barely made it to his chair before he dropped exhausted. His sympathetic wife was right there with a tall cool drink and a comforting word. “My, you look tired,” she said. “You must have had a hard day today. What happened to make you so exhausted?” “It was terrible,” her husband said. “The computer broke down and all of us had to do our own thinking.”

Flexible Sales Lady A saleswoman on the phone to her friend; “I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor”s permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take and aerobics class. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over”.

Captain Sensible From a passenger ship one can see a bearded man on a small island who is shouting and desperately waving is hands. “Who is it?” a passenger asks the captain. “I’ve no idea. Every year when we pass, he goes mad.”

The Five Toughest Questions That Women Ask Men And The AnswerS You need... The questions are: 1. What are you thinking about? 2. Do you love me? 3. Do I look fat? 4. Do you think she is prettier than me? 5. What would you do if I died? What makes these questions so difficult is that every one is guaranteed to explode into a major

First I’m a teepee; then I’m a wigwam; then I’m a teepee; then I’m a wigwam.

argument if the man answers incorrect (i.e. tells the truth). Therefore, as a public service, each question is analysed below, along with possible responses. 1. What are you thinking about? The proper answer to this, of course, is ‘I’m sorry if I’ve been pensive, dear. I was just reflecting on what a warm, wonderful, thoughtful, caring, intelligent woman you are and how lucky I am to have met you.’ Inappropriate answers: a. Baseball; b. Football; c. How fat you are; d. How much prettier she is than you; e. How I would spend the insurance money if you died. (Perhaps the best response to this question was offered by Al Bundy, who once told Peg, ‘If I wanted you to know what I was thinking, I would be talking to you!’) 2. Do you love me? The proper response is ‘YES!’, or if you feel a more detailed answer is in order ‘Yes, dear’. Inappropriate responses include: a. I suppose so; b. Would it make you feel better if I said yes?; c. That depends on what you mean by love. (Clinton’s response); d. Does it matter?; e. Who, me? 3. Do I look fat? The correct answer is an emphatic ‘Of course not!’ Incorrect: a. Compared to what?; b. I wouldn’t call you fat, but your thighs sure do make a lot of noise; c. A little extra weight looks good on you; d. I’ve seen fatter; e. Could you repeat the question? I was just thinking about how I would spend the insurance money if you died. 4. Do you think she’s prettier than me? Once again, the proper response is an emphatic ‘Of coure not!’ Incorrect responses: a. Yes, but you have a better personality; b. Not prettier, but definitely thinner; c. Not as pretty as you when you were her age; d. Define pretty; e. Could you repeat the question, I was thinking of the insurance money again. 5. What would you do if I died? A definite no win question here. (The real answer, of course, is ‘Buy a new Porsche.’) No matter how you answer

It’s driving me crazy. What’s wrong with me?’

this question, be prepared for at least an hour of follow-up question, usually along these lines: Woman: Would you get married again? Man: Definitely not! Woman: Why not ... don’t you like being married? Man: Of course, I do. Woman: Then why wouldn’t you re-marry? Man: OK, I’d get married again. Woman: YOU WOULD (hurtful look on face)?? Man: Yes, I would. Woman: Would you put away my pictures, and replace them with hers? Man: That would seem like the proper thing to do. Woman: And would you let her use my golf clubs? Man: She can’t use them, she is left handed.

MAN-TO-BE Prospective husband: Do you have a book called ‘Man, The Master of Women’? Salesgirl: The fiction department is on the other side, Sir.

PLANE SURPRISE Two long-lost friends, Peter and Jack, unknowingly were about to board the same airplane to go on holiday when Peter, who stood quite far back in the queue, saw his friend at the front of the line. In eagerness he shouted to his friend “HI-JACK!”

ONE LINERS • What does a clock do when it’s hungry? Goes back four seconds!!! • What is the biggest mouse in the world? Enormous. • I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn’t find any… • How will I know if my vomiting is morning sickness or the flu? If it’s the flu, you’ll get better. • A PC Engineer said ‘I’m not antisocial. I’m just not user friendly’. • What do you call a cow with no legs? Ground beef. • What’s big, red and looks like a bucket? A big, red bucket.

The doctor replies: ‘It’s very simple. You’re two tents!
