TIme TO geT OuT! That’s right, now is the time to leave your print fortress and get out there on the road. We have plenty of new print products to arm your customers to compete in the upturn. If they are too busy to get into see me, then I’m out of here. I am leaving the safety of my desk and melting laptop to actually call on customers face to face. Maybe I will wish them all an early Merry Christmas and a more prosperous 2010, maybe I will offer some help in designing some positive print to get them up and running to get a fast start to the New Year. What I will definitely do is spread some positive vibes and lead by example in advertising as the tide turns. A recent salesman visitor told me that his company never accepts problems as they were re-labelled as opportunities. Nice, I’ll bank that and invest that attitude into my own customer base and can only encourage you to have a go too. To help spread the cheer we have arranged a FREE LAPTOP opportunity on page 14 and a Win a mini, free to enter, competition, featured below. Some readers have had a joke with me asking if I am a glass half empty, or glass half full, type of printer. Well I am usually found with an empty glass and ordering a refill as you have to get to the bottom of something before you can top up and recharge again. Now is the time to get a round for your customers and spread a little PMA. Cheers,

Duplo’s Digital System 5000PRO Bookletmaker aids IKON

with the changes and additions that Duplo had made. There then entered a period of trials and testing with the new product in conjunction with Duplo to ensure the solution performed to their requirements and were very impressed with Duplo’s flexibility, technical expertise and willingness to find a solution.”

The solution

IKON is a Ricoh company, with 75,000 employees and offices in over 150 countries worldwide. They provide customers with total business solutions for every office, production and outsourcing need, including copiers and printers, colour solutions, distributed printing, facilities management, imaging and legal document solutions, as well as network design and consulting, and e-business development. IKON’s Document Services operation is a natural extension of their core business, offering off-site printing, finishing, scanning and mailing services. As experts in innovative solutions for all types of professional print and document needs, their consultative approach and state-of-the-art technology enable clients to improve the quality and productivity of their work, whether that’s fulfilling a one-off print requirement in the most cost effective way, or managing an entire marketing campaign from design to despatch.

The challenge “Our customers are always driving innovation” explains Steve Loftin, Professional Services MS/DS Operations Manager “and we wanted to become more proactive rather than reactive.” In particular, a long-standing customer, Ipsos MORI – a leading global marketing research company – was beginning to push the boundaries with a particular project for their client RAJAR. RAJAR stands for Radio Joint Audience Research and is the official body in charge of measuring radio audiences in the UK. It is jointly owned by the BBC and the Radio Centre on behalf of the commercial sector. Their survey asks the general public to record their radio listening habit throughout a whole week with ‘diary sheets’, which is then sent back to Ipsos MORI for processing. The local radio stations listed in the diary, are different depending on where the participant lives. There are currently approximately 320 individual stations on the survey. “With the RAJAR project there was no room for error. We have to process 150,000 variable sheets to form 5,000 survey ‘diaries’ every week, for 51 weeks of the year, without fail” explains Mr Loftin, “The data comes in on Monday and must be out by Friday. There is little room for production downtime and of course, every booklet must have the correct sheets for that particular recipient.” For six years the production team had used hand-fed Duplo bookletmakers and for 12 months Duplo’s first generation Digital System 5000 with DSF-2000 sheet feeder. And whilst they liked Duplo as a company unfortunately the products at that time just didn’t suit this particular specialist project. They then visited Drupa and saw their new generation sheet feeder the DSF-5000, and were immediately impressed

In May 2009 IKON Office Solutions invested in a Digital System 5000PRO, consisting of a DSF-5000 Sheet Feeder, SCC Slit/Cut/Creaser Module, and DBM-500/T Bookletmaker and Trimmer. The new DSF5000 was also installed with optional cover feeders and barcode readers on both of the feed areas and delivery tray, ensuring maximum security and accuracy of all booklets. 80gsm inners are deposited in the deep pile feed area and 160gsm covers are placed in the cover trays. Using the 2D barcode readers, every sheet is verified to ensure that the correct page order is in the set. Covers are pre folded with a flap and in between each batch is a separating job sheet that passes through at the same time as the books. “The new Duplo bookletmaker really is the final piece in the puzzle. The machine will literally stop if there is an error in the page ordering. It takes the whole manual quality control checking out of the process, leaving us with more time to concentrate on other parts of production line.” Steve Loftin comments. The bookletmaker begins production when the first print run is complete on Wednesday afternoon, and is run full-time through multiple shifts up until Friday afternoon. “The DSF-5000 has some very nice features that make life nice and easy including optical mark recognition, high performance paper handling and 2D barcode reader which means there is less physical and visual impact than when using conventional 1D barcodes.” Ian Duxbury, Operations Manager at Ikon comments. “We have full confidence in the solution, and we are now setting our sights on bigger and brighter things with the services we can now offer as a result.”

The result As a result of the investment IKON now boasts a truly safe, secure and streamlined variable data book production line. As a result, customers are delighted. “Because of the time savings with our manual processes, we are able to give the customers the knock-on cost savings as a result” Duxbury says. As well as the quicker start-up times, the workflow in the production centre is also benefited by a more time effective quality control. “As we are not having to hand match, and check every single book for quality purposes, our operators have more time to do other jobs within the workflow. It has meant that other customers have benefited from a better service as a result.” IKON has also been able to revisit existing customers with the new services that the Digital System 5000PRO brings. With these new found opportunities the benefit is clear as Duxbury explains “The machine was bought to service one particular project requirement. By opening out the machine to other customers, we simply get to pay back the machine sooner and start making a return on the investment quicker than we would have expected.” To find out more about the Duplo Digital System 5000PRO visit: www.duplouk.com/5000pro.

DocuMaster Finish for Fine Art Output

The Berkhamsted-based Technik Group, comprising long-established prepress arm, Technik, and litho and digital printer Connekt Colour, has purchased a Morgana DocuMaster to finish output from its HP Indigo 5000. In addition to high quality personalised mailings for leading corporates, a large part of Connekt Colour’s output consists of fine art books produced for private galleries and usually printed in runs from 250 – 500 in a variety of formats. “We print these on the Indigo in 16pp sections”, explains managing director, Dave Davies, “and these are

fed to the DocuMaster for creasing and folding prior to removal for subsequent binding. The DocuMaster is ideal for this application, but we also use it for conventional booklets and even for simple 4pp items that just need creasing and folding.” For work of this kind, print and finishing quality were of prime importance and Connekt consulted HP before seeing the DocuMaster in operation at Morgana’s Milton Keynes showroom. POSTSCRIPT REVOLUTIONARIES RECEIVE IPEX 2010 AWARD Dr. John Warnock and Dr. Charles (Chuck) Geschke, the co-founders of Adobe Systems Incorporated, have been honoured with the global Ipex 2010 ‘Champions in Print’ awards which acknowledges the huge contribution of those who have influenced and shaped the development of the printing industry. The Ipex Advisory Committee, which represents a broad range of major exhibitors, visitor groups and trade associations, has awarded the accolade in recognition of the roles they played in inventing Adobe® PostScript® technology which revolutionised desktop publishing by providing a radical new approach to printing text and images on paper. John Warnock says, “We are delighted to accept the Ipex “Champions in Print” award. When Chuck and I founded Adobe in 1982, we hoped our technology would have the potential to make an important contribution to the communication of ideas. But if anyone had told us it would be part of revolutionising the printing and publishing industry, we would have been sceptical. We were fortunate in that we have always hired bright and creative people at Adobe. I’m proud to say that Adobe has been built on the legacy that has continued to revolutionise how the world engages with ideas and information, whether in print, on the web and across all manner of devices.” Chuck Geschke says, “We are honoured to accept this award on behalf of everyone at Adobe who has worked with us to advance the future of the print and publishing industry. The revolution that began as desktop publishing in the late 1980s changed the cost, productivity and efficiency of an industry without compromising the 500 years of the traditional aesthetics and quality of the printing trade. The technology and products developed at Adobe since its founding have had a major influence on the evolution of the graphics arts industry. Today, Adobe continues to drive the transformation of print communications from a manual, mechanical process to a fully digital workflow.” Geschke and Warnock met in the late 1970s at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre, where Geschke directed research activities in computer science, graphics, image processing and optics, and Warnock worked as a principal scientist. The pair went on to set up Adobe Systems Incorporated in 1982 and launched PostScript which enabled content from a computer file to be printed exactly as it appeared on screen, with all formatting, graphics and fonts intact. Building on the success of PostScript technology, their company expanded into desktop publishing software with Adobe® Illustrator® and Photoshop®. These applications enabled designers to create and manipulate complex images and graphics for print. Later on, the launch of Adobe InDesign® redefined page layout for publications, allowing many magazines, newspapers and corporate brands to adopt modern production workflows. The development of Adobe Acrobat® software, and the Portable Document Format (PDF), helped advance the print industry further by enabling the use of electronic files for high-fidelity printing. Ipex 2010 Event Director, Trevor Crawford, says, “The sheer number of nominations that both Dr Geschke and Dr Warnock have received since the launch of the Champions in Print awards is testament to the impact they’ve had on our industry. Both had a vision for publishing and graphic arts which has forever changed how people create and engage with information. We’re extremely pleased to recognise their outstanding contribution to the graphic arts world and hope we’ll continue to attract large numbers of nominations for different industry figures.”

a host of stars from the art world, television, film, music and sport are lending their support to Pitney Bowes’ ‘Pushing the Envelope’ auction in aid of the National Literacy Trust. Now entering its sixth year-demonstrating Pitney Bowes commitment to the National Literacy Trust, the charity auction sees stars put pen to envelope to create bespoke works of art. New for Pushing the Envelope 2009, is the introduction of a theme ‘The words that mean most to you’ reinforcing the literacy message. Strong names have already pledged their support. Sir Ian McKellen provides a Shakespeare inspired design while artist Mimi Leung’s colourful design asks us not to take life too seriously and Olympian Colin Jackson’s ‘sunshine’ encourages us to always look on the bright side. The designed envelopes will be auctioned on ebay starting November 2nd and bidders will have up to 10 days to secure their favourite piece. Interested bidders can view a selection of the envelopes at the campaign’s website www.pitneybowes.pushingtheenvelope.info Patrick Jelly, Managing Director at Pitney Bowes UK commented: “Pushing the Envelope provides a fantastic opportunity for people to buy an original piece of art by a favourite celebrity for themselves or as a truly individual gift.” National Literacy Trust Director Jonathan Douglas added: “Poor literacy affects millions of children, young people and adults in the UK today. The National Literacy Trust campaigns to raise awareness of the vital importance of literacy and delivers innovative projects to reach those most in need of support. “We’d like to say a huge thank you to Pitney Bowes and all the stars taking part

in this year’s Pushing The Envelope. With their support we can help more children, families and adults to develop a love of reading and the skills they need to fulfil their potential. We can’t wait to see the designs!”

The most important international standard for the printing industry is to be revised and UK printers are being asked to contribute ideas and requirements. ISO 12647 specifies the parameters for printing conditions for various printing methods including sheet fed offset and digital proofing. Initially published in 1995, ISO 12647 covers all forms of conventional printing and is being updated to reflect the digital reality of modern print. As part of this revision, the UK representatives of TC130, the ISO technical committee tasked with reviewing the standard, are inviting printers to contribute to this work. A meeting is taking place at the London College of Communications on the 28th October, 2009 from 10am. A limited number of places are available for printers interested in sharing views and ideas about how ISO 12647 can be improved to better meet their needs and the needs of their customers. The Printers Collection, the archives and history of the printing and papermaking unions of the UK and Ireland, housed in the Marx Memorial Library, Clerkenwell, London is now available to print and paperworkers, trade unionists, students and historians worldwide on a new website. In March 2009, the Archive was opened by Unite Joint General Secretary Derek Simpson and Unite Assistant General Secretary Tony Burke. The Archive contains thousands of documents and memorabilia owned by the Graphical, Paper and Media Union, now part of Unite. The website contains the history of the UK and Ireland’s print and paper unions dating back to the creation of craft guilds of the Middle Ages; the first independent trade unions which were formed in the mid 1700s with the formation of Bookbinders lodges in London and the Manchester Typographical Society and the formation of the Trade Union Congress in Manchester in 1868 by three print union officials. The history of the print and paper unions was written by Professor John Gennard of Strathclyde University. The website contains details of how to visit the Archive, opening times, group bookings etc.

Because of the large number of foreign visitors to the Marx Memorial Library every year the website has information on the Archive in Welsh, German, Chinese, Polish, Italian and Russian. In addition print and paper workers and trade unionists can leave messages and recollections and there are details of how donations of union memorabilia from the print and paper trade unions can be made to the Archive. Tony Burke, Unite Assistant General Secretary, said: “Many former GPMU branches, chapels and activists have contacted us wanting to donate some of their memorabilia. We are always interested in receiving memorabilia as we know this precious material will be carefully looked after and treasured by the Library. “We want to encourage trade unionists, especially print and paper workers, students and anyone else to visit the archive and look at this historic material. We are very proud that we have been able to donate the history of our unions to the Archive. Our next task is to re-establish the memorial to print and paper trade unions who fought in the Spanish Civil War. It will be located in the small garden at the Library.” www.printerscollection.org.uk

IT’s not very often that a wide format, flatbed printer can boast that its first job was for a Peep-show now is it? Although this is exactly the claim to fame by the newly installed HP Scitex FB950 for Midlands based design and marketing agency R J Design Associates (RJDA) when they used it to print the latest promotional window graphic for footwear giants Schuh. RJDA’s needs for this large format printer wasn’t entirely down to the initial demands of the customers however, but of their production manager. Managing Director Rob Walker says, “Originally it was pressure from our Production Manager, Julian Oldham-Kitchener to put this flatbed in. Always looking for a way to get things done on time but faster, Julian had researched the amount of time and money we were spending mounting and laminating jobs that had been printed on the Seiko’s, for example.” Large format specialist reseller City & West End Solutions are a long time supplier of printer hardware to RJDA and after conducting a quality demonstration at this year’s Sign & Digital UK Show, sealed the deal with RJDA. Installation went ahead in July and it has not been out of production since. The recent acquisition also proves to strengthen RJDA’s position as a leading provider of large format print solutions in the East Midlands as well as offering the ability to lower the environmental impact of their own in-house printing. The sales and design teams at RJDA seized upon the opportunities this printer offered their business and in no time the window graphic for the shoe retail giant ‘Schuh’ was the first to be printed. The ‘Peep-Schuh’ refit was for the flagship Liverpool store and RJ Design were able to print and apply die-cut self-cling window vinyls in just two days, complete with Amsterdam style peep-holes! The new graphics succeeded the

15x2.5m board style hoardings that were printed directly onto substrate, also on the HP Scitex. Since then similar innovative POS campaigns for the Livingston based footwear retailer have seen the production of a die cut, freestanding ‘Adam-Ant’ and 1m square Post-It notes for the Dublin store. Another striking deal came in the form of wrapping Derby College’s new Joseph Wright campus building – a true eye-catching landmark for the College measuring 9.7m x 9.5m utilising mesh banner vinyl. With speed being of the essence the job was completed and fitted in just over half a day, something of an achievement for a tricky city centre location! The HP Scitex FB950 is capable of printing flatbed, sheetfed and rollfed at up to 80 m2/hr in fast mode. The 2.5m UV printer will also print double-sided and edge-to-edge, utilising 6 colour UV-curable inks (C, M, Y, K, Lc, Lm). Consistent print results are achieved thanks to 12 printheads with variable sized drops printing up to 1200 x 600 optimised dpi continually monitored by an onboard camera and spectrophotometer. It can print directly on to a wide variety of rigid media that include corrugated or compressed carton; foam board; plastics; or specialty material like glass, wood and aluminium as well as more traditional signage and Like many new installations and first runs RJDA were not without the odd problem, but in turn they have had no problem with the service received by both their supplier City & West End Solutions and distributor ArtSystems. Response times to their teething troubles were met within the hour ensuring loss of production was virtually non-existent. Walker concludes, “Our sustained growth and investment in people and cutting edge technology enables us to continually meet our clients needs. Investment in the HP Scitex FB950 has meant we can significantly reduce the fulfilment time on jobs and drive down the cost of wide format signage and display graphics.”

Epson Bringing Quality and Convenience to LFP Epson announces the launch of its high specification professional A2+ photo printer, the Epson Stylus Pro 3880. Offering flexibility of use across a broad range of media the printer can be used by professionasl and amateurs alike. Using Epson’s advanced, fourth generation UltraChrome K3 with vivid magenta pigment inks to deliver long lasting, high quality large format prints in both black and white and full colour, the Pro 3880 offers fast, flexible printing suitable for a number of applications. With a uniquely small footprint it is ideal for those with limited studio space and is fully equipped with all of the additional features that Epson users have become accustomed to, such as high speed connectivity with USB 2.0 and Ethernet. Individual ink cartridges increase the economy of colour printing whilst Epson’s patented Micro Piezo print head ensures accurate ink placement. The combination of Epson’s pigment inks with the Epson Micro Piezo print head ensure colour prints show excellent colour stability, light fastness and colour gradation. Artists or those producing limited edition prints can be assured that each print will be the same as the first, even if printed months apart. The Epson Stylus Pro 3880 incorporates a special driver mode that allows professional users to create bespoke black tones and clear whites, offering a great level of precision and artistic control. This combined with the three levels of black and the enlarged greyscale supplied by Epson’s UltraChrome K3 with vivid magenta ink technology, puts the Stylus Pro 3880 at the top of its class in producing sharp, precise and durable black and white prints. The ability to switch between photo and matte black as well as the neutral gradations users can achieve in colour and black and white make the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 ideal for photographers. The Epson Stylus Pro 3880 offers excellent colour stability after just 30 minutes with no visible colour shift, thus making it an ideal printer for use in proofing. Customers can sign-off proofs quickly and have the certainty that what they see is what they will get in the final print run. This consistency of output means that the

Epson Stylus Pro 3880 is also ideal for remote proofing. The Stylus Pro 3880 is compatible with a wide range of Epson media including glossy paper, matte paper, fine art paper, plain paper, proofing paper and poster-board of up to 1.5mm in thickness. Martin Johns, Senior Product Manager, Epson UK, commented: “The launch of the Stylus Pro 3880 makes Epson’s fourth generation UltraChrome K3 VM inkset available to a broader range of users and consolidates the Stylus Pro range. The combination of Epson’s latest hardware innovations, industry-leading ink technology and an exceptionally small footprint makes this printer a perfect match for photography, fine art, proofing and POS long-lasting prints to sell, exhibit or include within portfolios.” www.epson.co.uk

Konica Minolta’s Universal Print Driver cuts admin time

Konica Minolta Business Solutions has announced a new Universal Print Driver (UPD), for all Konica Minolta and other brand devices compatible with PCL6 or PostScript. With a single user interface (UI) Konica Minolta’s UPD offers considerable benefits for both network administrators and users. By using the UPD, network administrators can significantly reduce print device administration time. Previously drivers had to be installed for each networked print device. The UPD not only eliminates this requirement, it also makes complex function testing unnecessary as the UPD’s core is the same for every integrated printer.” In addition to these network administrator benefits, Konica Minolta’s UPD also provides advantages for users with access to multiple printers. The UPD automatically detects network printers and displays a list from which users can select the device to be used. Users can also easily configure new multifunctional devices and printers

connected to the office network. Due to the UPD’s common UI, users no longer need to learn the functions of several interfaces to guarantee smooth operation of their devices. The UI offers

full functionality including layout, finishing and quality for pre-installed printers. All basic functions like paper size and print type can be applied for all devices, without installing specified drivers.

A further key feature of the UPD is a specific search filter enabling the user to search by feature set. If a user needs to print a high quality colour A3 double-sided sheet for example, they simply choose the corresponding attributes, such as colour, A3 and double-sided output, in the search mask. The filter then shows all matching devices. For enhanced print job handling, detailed information such as print speed or printer location is shown in the search results. Malcolm Smith, Group Product Manager for Konica Minolta office products said, “This tool definitely provides users and IT administrators with a maximum of control and ease in daily printing. Konica Minolta is dedicated to providing customers with cost-effective business solutions for their document imaging needs. The UPD is clear evidence that Konica Minolta continues to be a total solutions supplier.” Konica Minolta, 01908 200400, www.konicaminolta.co.uk

DUPLO’S NEW HIGH SPEED DYNAMIC SHEET FEEDER Duplo’ s latest modular, high speed, production level sheet feeder, the DSF-5000, offers a number of enhanced benefits and greater productivity for nearline finishing and bookletmaking solutions, meeting the abilities of the industry to produce longer, faster print runs from the latest digital presses. Responding to the needs of users of both digital colour and high volume black and white cut sheet printers, the DSF-5000 can support the printed output of multiple printers without compromising print production and offers high speed, reliable feeding of a variety of media with both ultrasonic and optical double sheet detection. Of increasing importance to users is the need to use integrated features such as Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) or the optional camera system to read barcodes printed on each sheet, offering the necessary security to ensure reduced waste and customer satisfaction by delivering accurate production on time. The need for increased speed and versatility in handling digital print even when it is variable content and personalised on mixed weight media is achieved through a new belt suction feeder, the first from Duplo since the hugely successful DC-10/60 vertical collator was introduced almost 10 years ago. The marriage of features that include feeding from the top of a stack of sheets, multi-point sheet separation and active anti-static devices enable consistent and reliable feeding at speeds typically equivalent to 800 A4 pages per minute from a 610mm high capacity pallet style paper tray. “The DSF-5000 sheet feeder is the engine of the Digital System 5000 Pro bookletmaking line which is very versatile thanks to its modularity, allowing a customer to configure and expand upon it as their

needs and demands change. The feeder has been developed in response to digital press development enabling even longer and higher quality production runs, and although the focus in recent years has been around supporting the growth in digital colour, in 2008 the only sector of printer sales to see growth was in the relatively new area of ultra high speed mono cut sheet printers in the 200-300ppm range. Together with options such as additional feed trays for merging laminated or UV coated covers and inserts that are becoming increasingly popular, the DSF-5000 is ideally suited to meet a wide range of customer’s demands.” Comments Peter Dyson, Digital Finishing Product Manager at Duplo. “Customer feedback and the desire to make a system that would integrate seamlessly into their workflow, led Duplo to develop the pallet concept for the DSF-5000 as a universal device that can be loaded easily with work brought from any printer, or

inserted directly into a digital press so that it can then be taken on a pallet truck with the stack of printed sheets and loaded directly into the Duplo feeder” continues Dyson. This is available now for users of HP Indigo presses such as the 5500 and 7000 models with further work in progress with other press manufacturers. This feature complements the versatile SCC (slit, cut, crease) module which can be added to the configuration and removes two separate post-press operations of guillotining (to trim full bleed print) and creasing (to avoid the problem of digital print cracking after folding). Operators benefit from a user-friendly PC graphical interface that provides easy programming, job save, recall and automated set up of the complete finishing line. This single point of control enables one operator to manage the complete line, or more commonly, run the Duplo while they are also running a digital press. www.duplointernational.com,tel.01372 468131

Sharp launches new high performance printers Versatile punching & binding systems for wire, comb and coil

sharp have introduced a range of affordable, high performance black and white multifunctional printers (MFPs) aimed at helping medium to large-sized businesses improve their workflows. The new MX-M MFPs, which are intended for everyday use, include some of the most advanced features that have been successful in Sharp’s colour MFPs, such as a remote operation facility (VNC) and a customisable touch-screen display. The range comprises seven new models, meaning customers can choose the device that best suits their business requirements, including their financial resources. The high performance MX-M503N, MX-M453N and MX-M363N, have output speeds of up to 50, 45 and 36ppm (pages per minute) respectively. These high performance models also offer an advanced Duplex Single Pass Document Feeder (DSPF) designed to make scanning and copying fast and efficient, an 8.5 inch colour touch screen with thumbnail previews and they all come with printing at a true 1200 x 1200 dpi print resolution and colour scanning as standard. In addition, these models offer the options of faxing as well as Sharp’s award winning integrated retractable keyboard. In addition to these three high performance models, Sharp is also introducing the MX-M283N, which copies and prints at 28ppm. This model emulates its bigger brothers in all aspects except one — the DSPF has been replaced by an RSPF (Reversing Single Pass Document Feeder), which is designed to help reduce costs in less intensive scan environments. Also included in the range are the MX-M503U, MX-M453U, and MX-M363U. The MX-M503U, MX-M453U and MX-M363U models print and copy at speeds of up to 50, 45 and 36ppm respectively. All three devices come with an RSPF as standard, an 8.1 inch black and white touch screen, and are designed to support specific customer requirements by offering optional printing at 600 x 600 dpi print resolution, optional black and white scanning and optional faxing. All models are ideal for busy bureau that produce large volumes or that regularly have to cope with urgent deadlines, and with the addition of three optional finishers they give complete flexibility for a greater return on investment. All MFPs in the range feature Sharp’s contemporary grained exterior design for increased aesthetic appeal. Sharp is committed to raising workgroup productivity by making MFPs as easyto-use as possible and this approach is evident in the latest MX-M devices. “Customers told us they were looking for increased functionality in black and white MFPs and the new MX-M range was created with this in mind. We hope that these new products provide businesses with all the productivity features they need to deliver maximum benefit in their workplace,” said Marc Brion, Product Manager at Sharp. www.sharp.co.uk

LONDON CALLING

Duplo International hosted a superb digital print finishing event at the prestigious Docklands Hilton Hotel aimed at print organisations looking to add real value to their print services and gain extra margins.

Duplo london Calling T

he ‘lONDON callINg’ theme was a great success with printers arriving by car, courtesy bus, train, boat and even by plane due to the ‘clash’ with Irelands Sign and Digital show. Visitor numbers exceeded expectations based on previous road shows and workshops, witnessing the UK launch for three new Duplo solutions, including the new Digital System 445 and Digital System 5000PRO Bookletmakers, as well as the DC-645e, featuring Duplo’s new e-tandem remote service solution. Duplo also showcased their new Ultra 205A UV Coater and DPB-500 Perfect Binder. Adding to the experience were finishing partners Renz, Vivid Laminating Technologies and Kern Limited who in turn introduced CSN to some very exciting front end software from a company aptly named Print Soft. Don’t believe that the fashionable ‘Digital’ in finishing is just about forming products from digital print, the

equipment here is highly digitally driven too. Most kit was PC driven and even the manually programmed were reading bar codes etc to collate in matching variable data sets. Peter Jolly, Marketing Manager at Duplo had promised “a relevant show at a relevant time, with the summer optimism within the industry hopefully continuing into the autumn months and beyond”. We were not to be disappointed; in fact we discovered more in 3 hours than can fit in this last minute, copy deadline, report. We will be following up on new opportunities for us all in future issues. Peter Jolly told CSN, “This isn’t just a show about grey boxes. Whilst we have over 20 different finishing solutions on show, we are on hand to talk to print companies about how they can use our products to offer customers something different, whilst improving turnaround times and lowering outsourced costs.

Our most successful customers have used this rocky financial period to differentiate themselves by reorganising their bindery and charging niche services at a premium price. One thing a recession is sure to do is accelerate change, and this is a show aimed at companies looking to become more efficient whilst improving their offering.” Renz showcased their range of punching and binding machines from bench top through to semi automatic, ideal for any printers or finishers trying to catch a share of the Christmas calendar market. Vivid exhibited EasyMount Wide Format Laminators and the New Matrix Duo and Matrix 530 Laminating systems, enabling lamination to be finished in-house. Kern’s MD Peter Jolly, [yes, what are the chances of that happening? One Print Show, One exhibition hall, yet Two Peter Jollys’], demonstrated a personalised envelope and letter finishing solution, the EasyMailer. There

is a lot of potential here for our print shops to break into mailing, especially as the envelopes are made on the finishing equipment as it turns one A3 sheet into a personalised letter in a personalised envelope ready for post. This visit was so worthwhile for so many reasons with the Duplo London Calling show proving to be the place to see the finest exhibit of finishing solutions under one roof this year. We left happy having answered our agenda questions; yes we can offer our customers more. Yes we can save unnecessary cost and finally wouldn’t if be great if we can all become more productive. The train journey home caused a few strange looks as I was holding my huge DUPLO samples and goody bag, with resulting computers thinking Maureen had taken me to Hamleys to buy big boys Lego. Still in a way I had collected quite a few business building bricks, so what the heck! www.duplolondoncalling.com.

Konica Minolta and GAE team up for End-to-End Book Production Showcase Konica Minolta’s Production Print division is to hold two open days on 19 and 20 October at the company’s ihub London centre, to demonstrate solutions for short-run digital book production. Systems on demonstration include mono and colour printing and softback and hard case binding. Headlining the showcase are Konica Minolta’s bizhub PRO C65hc digital press with the new High Chroma toner technology responsible for an unprecedented level of ‘colour hue and vibrancy’ and the UK launch of Horizon’s unique HCB-2 runof-one professional casemaking and binding system. Titled ‘The Great Cover Story - The end-to-end event for digital book production’, the open day event is being held in conjunction with finishing specialist, GAE. Konica Minolta’s Business Development Manager, Nick Hancock says: “Visitors will be able to see a range of solutions for everything from bespoke mono documents to full colour commercial books, all with variable data throughout – including the cover, if required. Most exciting is the potential of the new colour and hardback systems for the burgeoning photobook and yearbook sector. The superior colour quality and presentation offer a new dimension that really does add value.” At the event visitors can see Konica Minolta digital print systems and software solutions used with GAE print finishing equipment to provide complete solutions for production of short run or even one-off digital books with hard or soft covers. Digital book applications include photo books/wedding albums produced with TaoPix software, children’s storybooks, financial documents, short-run novels and so on.

On show will be the full range of Konica Minolta high-speed mono and colour digital production systems. These include the bizhub PRO C6501e capable of heavy-duty production of up to 300,000 A4 sheets per month with an output capacity of up to 3,900 pages per hour (65 pages per minute) in both full colour and black-and-white. Also demonstrated will be the bizhub PRO C65hc colour digital press with new High Chroma toner technology. Able to print at 65 colour or mono pages a minute, the bizhub PRO C65hc uses Konica Minolta’s revolutionary High Chroma toner to produce print results that replicate the colour palate of an RGB monitor using CYMK print process. Visitors can see print output from the Konica Minolta bizhub production print systems turned into soft and hard cover books using P3 member GAE’s range of near-line professional on-demand binding solutions including Horizon guillotines, perfect binding, case binding and Komfi thermal laminators’. Nick continues: “Digital print on demand technology is opening new and exciting opportunities for the commercial print industry. Together with GAE our open days will show the possibilities for short-run book production that digital print now provides. The production of very short print runs and even one-off copies is now economically viable using digital production methods and this opens up a range of profitable services for printers. The open days held at our ihub centre in Baker Street, London will have a fun Sherlock Holmes theme in keeping with the location.”

GAE and Konica Minolta are pleased to present the hard facts...a partnership that gives you the opportunity to get all your digital book production and finishing all wrapped up... The greatest cover story of all times!

GREEN ISSUES

New multipurpose paper Duraweld announce latest

carbon offsetting programme

Indah Kiat Perawang Mill, part of the APP Group, has developed a new High Bright Multipurpose office paper “Hybrite”. This grade has been specifically created for the European markets where the need for high quality and excellent appearance go hand-inhand with demanding office printing techniques. The paper has an ISO Brightness of 98% ISO Brightness and a 165% CIE whiteness. This new grade that APP is launching - “Hybrite”, is, as the name suggests a very white product with excellent performance built in. This grade has TRUTONE treatment which is a process to maximise the image and print using the modern pigment based inkjet printing systems. APP has a strong commitment to the environment and the long term sustainability of paper production

in Indonesia. Nationally the Government stipulates that only 3% of the country’s forested area can be allocated for the pulp and paper industry. When it comes to the tree farms APP is using a system of sustainable plantation forestry. This means that trees are planted expressly for the purpose of pulp and paper production. In line with the laws of Indonesia they use degraded land for their pulpwood plantations. In recent years this means that around one million hectares has been successfully replanted on degraded land and wasteland, changing the land from carbon source into carbon sink areas. Not only are part of these tree farm areas set aside under high conservation value assessments, but APP has also been involved in some exciting projects such as the creation of the Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve in Riau Province. This is a UNESCO Man & Biosphere Program to safeguard a high bio-diversity area. Further details of APP’s products and sustainability practices can be found at the website www.asiapulppaper.com, while specific Hybrite product information and samples are available from the UK sales agent Calington Ltd – email sales@calington.co.uk.

Yorkshire printER secures key ‘green’ accreditation A Yorkshire design and print specialist has received an international standard accreditation to further enhance an already impressive environmental record. Sheffield-based Northend has achieved the ISO14001 standard for its environmental management system, which recognises a company’s ability to control its impact on the environment and its compliance with regulations. The standard specifies a process for controlling and improving an organisation’s environmental performance while requiring Northend to meet environmental legal requirements. The move is the latest demonstration of the company’s long-standing commitment to become a more environmentally sustainable business. Northend has successfully realised a number of ambitious objectives aimed at reducing their environmental impact. These include, reducing water usage by 40% year on year, reducing waste plates by 25% year on year, and removing all harmful prepress chemicals. The company has also contacted their top ten suppliers to communicate their environmental policy. Peter Wright, Environmental Manager at Northend, said: “To achieve the ISO14001 standard is a fantastic

achievement and we are all proud of our management system. As a company we are dedicated to reducing our impact on the environment and this will further assist us in our aims. “The print industry is not particularly associated with being ‘green’, so it has been difficult at times to pursue our environmental goals. But we have made incredible strides forward and are thrilled with the progress we have made.” Northend, which has operated in Sheffield for 120 years, already has strong green credentials after it was awarded Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) accreditation. FSC and PEFC are both independent organisations established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. To earn certification and the right to use the FSC and PEFC labels, Northend has worked hard to adapt its management and operations to use paper from sustainable sources. They have also previously invested heavily to switch to processless plates in a bid to cut plate chemistry and reduce water usage in the developing of plates.

Duraweld, producers of customised presentation, packaging and printed products, has announced that for the third year running it is undertaking a carbon offsetting programme by purchasing 27 energy efficient stoves for an African-based project managed by offset provider co2balance. The energy efficient stoves are approximately 50% more efficient than an open fire, therefore needing considerably less wood to cook with. As a result each energy efficient stove will save over 15 tonnes of CO2 over the lifetime of the stove. They are built nearby to where they are used, therefore providing local employment, and using Google Earth the exact location of each stove can be seen via a link from the Duraweld website. The company reduced their overall CO2 tonnage by 11% from last year, equivalent to flying from London to New York 18 times or driving 135,000 miles by car. Savings were made by installing movement detectors for infrequently used areas of the factory; improving the amount of daylight into the factory thus reducing the need for electric lights and initiating a strict “switch off” policy for unused machinery. In addition to carbon offsetting, the company is also celebrating the fact that the successful implementation of its ambitious Environmental Policy has seen significant reductions in other areas of energy consumption. Launched in 2007, its 20 step programme covers all areas of the business and includes a comprehensive range of environmentallyfriendly measures and procedures. Efficiencies reported in the last 12 month period show: • Electricity kwh usage - reduced by 18% • Gas kwh usage - reduced by 20% • Water consumption – reduced by 3% • Skips sent to landfill - reduced by 30% • Amount of new pallets/boxes purchased - reduced by 35% • A4 office paper usage/purchased - reduced by 29% Hannah Senior, Chief Operating Officer, Duraweld said: “Duraweld is well known for being committed to the protection of our ecosystem and environmentally responsible business practices. As a factory-based business, we have had to be determined and focused in making our environmental policy work, and are delighted that we have achieved such outstanding results in such a short space of time. We are now keen to spread the word and show other organisations how we have tackled the ‘green issue’ and hopefully inspire them to do the same.” www.duraweld.co.uk.

DIGITAL IMAGING

I was heaping praise on the Roland eco-solvent printer in last month’s issue, and another four weeks, and numerous jobs since, it’s still justifying its credit. It’s become such a feature in the studio I rather hope Roland forget it’s here so I am going to try and sneak into the data base and delete them from the subscription list just in case it jogs their memory. Martin Christie wrties…

Worth a second look at Solvent

W

e have a broad brief here at CSN, approved by the publisher, to be kind to our advertisers, who support us with their funds, but also to be fair to our readers who may part with their hard earned cash to invest in their products. It’s a commercial compromise that does see us sometimes fall out with someone who thinks they have been unfairly upstaged by a competitor, only to have the situation reversed when we apply the same even handedness to the opposition. What goes around comes around, and nobody in these fast moving product times has the absolute answer no matter how the press releases herald a revolutionary product with ground breaking profit making possibilities. The reality is that we are all counting the pennies and we cannot afford a wrong decision on hardware that may be made redundant long before the lease deal has been settled. The continual dilemma is that we face enquiries at the counter from nonspecialists — the customers — who may know, or often have a vague idea of what they want but have no idea how

it can be produced. No reason they should. Our job is to come up with the answers. The problem is that manufacturers have such an investment in machines and software, they have to gear solutions to suit the products they have available. Although it is well accepted that products are now being rushed into production and then sales and marketing long before they have been effectively trialled, the simple practical production delays mean that there is a delay between make and bake. We are not talking consumable products here — not the stuff we go through day to day — but the nuts and bolts of basic printing machinery which would have seen a ten year life in previous times making the return investment a simple calculation. That might be a contributory factor to the decline of the print trade exhibition — the traditional market place for new kit — in recent years. Particularly in a tight competitive market potential purchasers will be less inclined to make decisions with long term financial penalties on machinery that may have a short term shelf life.

And the positive spin of the salesman counts for less than hard nosed facts and figures. That’s why we do appreciate manufacturers who indulge us with a long term trial because it does enable us to gain a more complete picture, containing both the good points and the bad points, and balancing the judgement. Perhaps because I am a little bit older, I prefer to keep things simple in the relationship with my machines. I don’t want to play a game, or explore the possibilities of the algorithm. I just want to print pictures. My old friend is the Epson 7600 that sits behind me, a solid dependable workhorse for the last five years or more. It has saved the day on many an occasion with its ability to print on all types and shapes of media without fuss. Not the fastest machine in the studio, but the easiest to use. It rattles and shakes, and the odd light flicks on and off, but it has maximum operator manual override, and that’s why I love it. It is still, also after countless litres of ink cartridges, and many metres of

media, on the same print head. Epson don’t use thermal elements to preheat the ink — the Achilles heal of many manufacturers. No coincidence then that Roland use an Epson print head in their machine, and employ a similar manual lever to grip the media rather than place control in the hands of automated systems and sensors. Like the Epson, it can also print on a variety of media, in this case vinyl banner material and plastics. It’s all waterproof and scratch resistant for indoor or outdoor use for any type of display. Also in common, Roland have a really useful online cost calculator which enables you to price out the consumable overheads depending on different media and print quality settings. The RS 640 runs the basic four colour CMYK inks, available in 220 or 440 ml cartridges. These will not give the colour range of comparative inkjet printers with more colours in the can — three times more in some cases — so if highly accurate photo-style production is required, this is not the machine for you. But results are pretty good if media is matched and best quality print option selected, and to be realistic posters and banners above A0 in size are often meant to be viewed from a distance for effect and not studied in detail with a magnifying glass, Price wise, at £14,000 the Roland, competes with similar sized 64inch inkjets, and ink costs and overheads are similar, some media in fact is considerably cheaper as a lot more length is on a roll. The biggest advantage is the variety of media that can be printed upon, and the fact that it can be used outdoor fade free and water fast. This is where a switch to solvent ink printing is a serious option for the copy shop. Now the inks are more environmentally friendly, and you don’t need to don a gas mask to operate them, they can fit in anywhere you have the room for the hardware, and a bit more for the media

that runs out of it. Our experience of large format printing over nearly a decade now is that most printing above the size of A1 is for display purposes, whether or not for indoor or outdoor use, longevity and durability is a priority if the customer is going to pay a premium price for the

product. So moving on from just paper posters to vinyl stickers, PVC signage and popup banners makes market sense. After all you can still print posters ! One of the best features of the Roland is the RIP. Having with worked with, and abandoned, most

Not everone is convinced of the new ecosolvent inks. HP pulled out of the market and their answer, launched at Drupa last year, is Latex inks. The first machines have been introduced into the UK this summer. HP don’t do slim. This massive 104 inch (3mtre) media width is surrounded by equally bulky bodywork, and is obviously aimed at the large display and vehicle graphics market. With an entry price of around a hundred grand don’t expect to see too many popping up in the copy shops. There may be starter level machines in the future however when or if the new technology proves itself. At the moment the jury is still out as the heavier latex inks have been described as “like pouring concrete”, and require some serious heat to cure so media options may be limited.

available large format Rips, it was a pleasant surprise to find one that was immediately user friendly and to use.I have nothing against Rips but they are designed to be complicated so they can tackle a multitude of tasks, particularly varied work flow from several different outlets, especially in a nice calm studio away from the hustle and bustle of customers, telephones, and a host of other noisy distractions. Print on demand requirements tend to be more straightforward, single input with often multiples of an individual file. Colour profiling is often less of an issue because you are dealing with what has been provided by the customer, and any adjustments are easier made when assessing the original on a monitor calibrated to match the printer. Often one of the most crucial items is actually exact size. This is where the difference between what the customer provides and what he or she expects as final output is important. It may be an enlargement to fit particular frame size, or presentation board, or part of a series where dimension consistency is critical. Fit to page works at A4 or A3 size on digital printers, but even there issues can arise from the proportions of the original. As the scales increase, so can the possibility of errors. Add to that the fact that most large format printers have a habit of rearranging the size of prints to suit themselves, regardless of what the operator expects, and you have a good chance of regular mistakes, especially in a pressurised environment. That’s when you really need the RIP on your side, to give you a clear visual of exactly what’s going to happen when the ink starts spraying about the paper. The information may be there somewhere in the interface, but if it’s hidden amongst a lot of other nonessential items it’s easy to miss. Perhaps it’s because most Rips are designed around studios predominantly handling proofs with standard publishing layouts that the importance of accurate measurement of scaling is somewhere down the table of priorities. But it’s a bit like having the speedometer in your car the same size as the battery indicator, oil pressure gauge and clock, and trying to check it in a panic when you see the dreaded yellow radar box coming up. You need to know instantly what you are doing before you press the wrong

23

pedal to the metal. The Roland display gives you vital information very clearly. It asks you to check the media width and tells you exactly what width it will print on. It then shows the exact size of the output image with any margins. As well as the numbers box, there are rulers in the image preview box as an additional guide. The preview image will also change size if you alter scale, or move if you want to alter X and y points to drag the print across available media. Finally it will tell you politely if there is insufficient media width for the job, rather than carry on and print off the edge, or miss out the last slice of the job. One of the issues with print on demand is the continual turnover of images, previously unseen, rather than created. It is very easy to overlook something if the printer decides to crop it. If you’ve got a customer wanting a job in a rush there’s nothing worse than waiting for it to rip and print and then discover it’s the wrong size, or something has been missed out. For all the magic eyes and buzzers they still haven’t come up with a device that will be wise before the event. The Roland has the next best thing — a safety net that lets you check just one more time before committing to print. It has a good size visual so you can check it against the original file before pressing the go button. You can add extra copies and it will nest them automatically on the media, and it will save the job in the queue for when the customer decides he wants another copy, or simply save the postscript file for future use. There’s nothing more frustrating and wasteful as having to cancel an entire print job and start again. So simple, so efficient, so sensible. Why aren’t all Rips like this? I particularly like the display that shows when the file is ripping and when it is about to print. The progress line shows you what’s happening rather than just sitting like a dummy waiting for action. A nice touch of humour are the little cog wheels that go round to show you the machine is thinking. If this review has made you think about going solvent you can get more information from Roland Tel O845 230 90 60 or visit www.roland.dg.co.uk

RICOH PRO C900

CSN travelled to Feltham, Middlesex, to see the Ricoh Pro C900 colour press and enjoyed a demonstration of new possibilities in digital print. The advancements in quality, production, pre-press and finishing were proved with real scenario jobs that will over deliver on our customers expectations.

Ricoh prove high volume digital press prowess W

ith our usual year end annual trade print show on temporary hold CSN have taken a pro active stance and hit the road to report on what we should all be aspiring to. Accepting an invitation from Ricoh’s print production manager, Karen Lawrence we were spoilt with a quite magnificent dem from Richard Rainey who showed why Ricoh have made such inroads into real print production. Our own customers are not over interested in the print process being either litho or digital and when the quality is comparable the finished product and match to quantity actually required is paramount. We should not have to make a customer have the print run to match our print technology and the Ricoh Pro C900 is delivering bespoke print runs in both numbers and actual print product type. Richard overviewed the specifications, covering speed, monthly volumes, paper storage and finishing which is all listed here for the comparison of your existing high volume colour. More importantly we were interested in how to load the files and manage the workflow which proved, hands on, very user friendly. Maureen drives our own kit at home and was pleased to use the built-in EFI print server controller which utilises a full Acrobat programme with

Pit Stop, all displayed through Ricoh’s 10.4 inch colour operation display. The display arm allows extension and tilt to view the animated procedures. The built in controller can connect to a key board and mouse to save running to and fro a PC, preparing jobs with EFI Impose & compose. The LCD browser allows easy reprinting with files easily found ‘on top of the machine’. Trained operators can assist maximum uptime with certain maintenance tasks

and use of customer replacement units. Copier mode meant even casual users can get an urgent ‘interrupt’ job produced, which is important for old school print shop owners to remain useful. Useful tricks include changing toner on the fly and a purge tray to collect incomplete sets if ever a jam does occur. Paper trays 3, 4, 5 and 6 are air assisted with paper selection dictating ‘nib’ fuser temperature. The registration

unit shuffles the leading edge ensuring no more than a plus or minus .5 mm image variance. The use of an inter poser will collate in pre-printed covers and tabs before stapling, punching, automated ring binding, booklet making and even glue binding. The print quality was outstanding and all without breaking into 1200dpi. We found 600 dpi to be more than marketable. Our demonstration proved fast and reliable and running costs are

lower than most of our readers are used to. The speed of 90 pages per minute is for all stocks from up to 7 trays with a paper capacity of 11,000 sheets. The large capacity tray adjusts to SRA3 again with air –assisted feed. The in line finishing options will make new products for your customers and attract new ones .At the front end, variable data will also attract new colour print one to one marketing with on demand turnarounds that new customers dictate. No need to print anything to stock and waste overprints as the Ricoh C900 can really print on demand at the time of need. If you are missing your annual road trip, like us, book your own demonstration to view the next generation of the digital press, with Ricoh. Contact Karen.Lawrence@Ricoh. co.uk, 0208 261 4000 We are hoping to case study a longer trial for your appraisal and will be reporting back with more specifics of new print opportunities in our next issues. Interestingly each bespoke order is built at Ricoh’s Telford facility, which is where we are off to later this month.

As Ricoh has registered so much interest in our part of the print industry and is now making kit specifically designed for our expansion, we will be keeping a close eye on the growing Ricoh Print Pro Club.

THE SEARCH FOR THE FUTURE OF THE PRINT ROOM Ricoh UK have announced that it will be undertaking the largest ever study of corporate in-plants and corporate reprographic departments (CRDs) in the UK, titled The Future of the Print Room. Over the next three months, the company will be conducting face-toface surveys with 200 senior print room managers in order to build the most comprehensive picture to date of this burgeoning print sector’s capabilities and applications, staff levels; hardware and software on the ground and the issues that will decide its future development. Ricoh has teamed up with highly respected independent consultant, Dr Robert Dekena, of Germany’s document logistics specialists, DokuLog, to compile the study’s findings and the results are expected to be published in December this year.

Says Karen Lawrence, Ricoh UK Professional Print Solutions Manager: “An accurate picture of the current market is a vital tool for determining a path to future success, and this study will identify the opportunities for CRDs to further improve efficiencies and at the same time provide an insight into the health and future direction of this sector. Ricoh has its roots in the corporate print sector, which is now entering a very interesting time. Much like the wider industry, CRDs are adjusting to the demands for shorter turn around times and increased services. But with powerful digital print engines and specialist software in place in many CRDs, combined with the expertise of their personnel, many are now actively seeking to utilise any extra capacity by finding new markets and competing in the commercial print market. Thus, this sector’s performance has never been more relevant to the wider print industry.” As well as current workloads/ volumes; job formats and staffing levels, “The Future of the Print Room” study will also examine the printing and finishing hardware and software deployed by the UK’s CRDs, and look closely at their connectivity both within the IT infrastructure of their parent organisations and to those outside. It will also encourage CRD managers to make assessments of past and future market and technology developments and the expected levels of change in colour and black and white volumes to date and in the future. Ricoh believes the result will be the world’s most accurate and informative assessment of the UK corporate print sector and a critical

25

resource for vital market statistics. UK based print room managers are being actively encouraged to participate in the study by a number of trade associations, including the Association of Print and Communication Managers (APCOM), the trade association for print room managers in local government. Says Mark Barlow, President of APCOM: “This study by Ricoh has APCOM’s full support. Access to clear and credible data is essential to the sector’s planning for the future and so we’ll be urging each of our members contacted by Ricoh to take part. The sector is in good general health and has readily embraced digital printing technologies and techniques; indeed variable data printing in black and white and full-colour documents is enjoying strong growth currently. But there are many challenges on the horizon, such as competition from external print suppliers and the perennial drive for improved efficiency, so we must do all that we can to ensure we’re well placed to meet these challenges head on.” As one of the world’s leading independent consultants concerned with document output systems and solutions for major corporate organisations, DokuLog’s expertise has been crucial to compiling the study. When the findings of The Future of the Print Room study are announced in December, all survey participants will receive the published report of Dr Dekena’s findings and be invited to discuss and debate the results at an independent forum with DokuLog’s founder, Dr Dekena, - a discussion that will also be published by Ricoh UK. www.ricoh.co.uk.

NEW PROFIT CENTRE

Why you should consider ordering custom printed transfers!

Are you one of those people who are struggling to cope with the workload and wish that during the night some supernatural beings might complete all your outstanding printing work, so that you get a good night’s sleep? Of course, in reality, that’s not going to happen – BUT you can get outside help! If you are an established copy shop, instant printer, screen printer, an embroiderer, or other garment decorator, then why not consider developing a partnership with a reputable heat transfer manufacturer? You will need to make the final decision whether or not you intend to decorate your garments exclusively with pre-printed heat transfers, or use them as part of mix suitable to you and your customer’s business needs. So let’s consider (a) what types of transfers are available (b) what they can do for your business and (c) how to choose the right supplier.

and no expert knowledge of the software would be required. The only investment would be the relatively modest outlay for an initial heat press, and it is possible to purchase a brand new heat press for well under £1000.00. Remember that you do get what you pay for – you might be able to buy a press very cheaply but there will be a reason why it’s cheap! Buy a reliable brand from a reputable dealer – you are investing in your future, so don’t make elementary mistakes! Because you are using a supplier, you keep your overheads lower. You are not covering the cost of the payroll, equipment and buildings necessary to manufacture the transfers. In addition, you can keep your inventory to a minimum. By using heat applied custom transfers, you only have to buy stock as needed, you don’t have to pre-print any item which may, or may not, sell. Careful stock control, and applying the “just-in-time” rules, helps keep costs low and cash flow flowing!

Types of Transfers available

Choosing the right supplier

Custom heat transfers are manufactured using the customers own artwork and specifications. This offers you far greater opportunities to be flexible, although you will need to be able to produce artwork using software such as Corel Draw, Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator. Some larger transfer companies may be able to produce the artwork for you, though this is generally an additional cost. The minimum quantity for a design will vary both from the supplier and the transfer system used, but generally can range from 10 to unlimited number of pieces. Lead or turnaround times can be critical, but for most requirements an average turnaround time would be about 5 days, although if a very large quantity is required, it may be longer. The majority of custom heat transfers are produced by screen printing, but there are also a few specialist manufacturers who use litho printing which can produce photo quality images, often to a very much higher level of sharpness, and offering an immense range of colours. Both these methods use plastisol inks. Digital printand-cut transfers are produced by printing (using CMYK) onto a special media which can be heat applied to the required substrate. This method is particularly suitable for lower quantities. There are a wide range of heat transfer systems available which a specialist transfer manufacturer can supply, such as Flock, Puff, Glitter, Foil – as well as the more novelty processes such as Glow-in-the-dark, UV and reflective. Of course, it is important to be aware the makeup of the product you intend to decorate. Most tee shirts for example are 100% cotton or a Polyester-Cotton blend, which should present no problems. But if you have to decorate more difficult materials such as Nylon, Lycra®, or Neoprene®, then your choices of transfer system will be very narrow, and you will probably need to go to an experienced specialist transfer printer. A reputable supplier will be only too willing to advise and guide on the right system to be used.

If you are intending to embark on a long term, business relationship, then it makes sense to check out your intended supplier and ensure that you are satisfied that they are the right partners for your business. When you contact the supplier ask yourself a number of questions. Firstly, how long was it before your call was answered? Was the person helpful and friendly? Did the member of staff have a proper understanding and knowledge of heat transfers? Were they able to answer all your questions without having to refer to anyone else? Did the member of staff give you enough time to explain your requirements, and listen carefully to your needs? And finally, were they able to provide you with a custom transfer solution for your needs? Assuming that you are satisfied with their response, you should ask the potential supplier to send you samples of the product you are interested in, together with product details and confirmation of any pricing given to you. Make a note of how quickly you receive this information. When you receive the samples, you should carefully and thoroughly test and evaluate them. Apply them following the instructions provided. How easy was it to apply? If it was easy, then you can be sure that you can be more efficient. What does the finished print look like? Is it clean and easy to see? Is it totally opaque so that no colour from the garment is showing through? Then carry out the washing tests, again following the instructions provided. Wash it several times and each time, inspect it for any sign of degradation or failure. Remember, your customers will be doing this and it is important that you have confidence in the products that you are selling. Check pricing carefully to ensure that if you are comparing pricing, that you really are comparing on a “like for like” basis. For example, some companies charge for screens, film work, wash-ups etc separately from the unit price – others prefer to provide an “all in” unit price. So sometimes a low unit price can be misleading! Build up a working relationship with your supplier, they are often valuable sources of help and information, and even if they can’t help you, they will often know who could. You need a long term business partnership that will not only support you, but should share the same goals and aspirations of your own business. Custom heat transfers can make a sensible and profitable way to grow your business. Make the right choice and you will never regret your decision! For more information visit: www.targettransfers.co.uk

What can heat transfers do for your business? There are a number of advantages in buying custom printed heat transfers. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, a serious transfer manufacturer is able to offer a variety of different systems to suit most fabrics, opening up other opportunities perhaps not viable when you do it yourself! It can be a very effective low cost way to start up a decorated garment business. There would be no need to purchase the equipment needed to produce the transfers,

epsON has announced the global launch of the 24” Stylus Pro WT7900 printer featuring the world’s first white aqueous ink for packaging proofing and sample production. The new inkjet printer made its global public debut at Labelexpo held at Brussels Expo, 23 -

26 September 2009 Designed specifically for packaging proof applications, the Stylus Pro WT7900 is the latest addition to Epson’s large format Stylus Pro range of inkjet printers and reinforces Epson’s commitment to the packaging industry. It features sophisticated colour management and control, wide gamut reproduction and precision printing on a variety of flexible film, paper and metallic media to deliver the quality results important for contract packaging proofs and accurate sample production. The printer uses a 9-colour Epson UltraChrome HDR (High Dynamic Range) ink set to produce a wide colour gamut and accurate spot colours. To deliver the high density white tints and accurate overlays important for packaging proof applications Epson has developed a water-based white ink specifically for this printer. The optional Epson SpectroProoferT gives Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 users automatic and precise colour management and control for reliable and consistent proof verification, colour calibration, colour

certification, profile creation, spot colour matching, colour shift tracking and target measurement. Furthermore, a colour certification label, such as the Fogra wedge, can be printed to support the certification process. These features enable users to integrate the Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 into their production workflows very easily, onsite and over a network of remote locations if required. “The Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 is the latest addition to our professional graphics range and has been designed specifically for the high-end packaging market,” says Martin Johns, Senior Product Manager, Professional Graphics at Epson UK. “We have implemented technologies and features to address the specific requirements of the market, backed by Epson quality, speed and reliability. GROw YOuR BuSINeSS wITH PROMOTIONal MeRCHaNDISe AS we start to emerge from a difficult six months in the UK economy, promotional products manufacturer, Listawood are launching an exciting new way for businesses to generate additional sales and profits from their existing customer base. Their ‘Business in a Box’ initiative has been designed to make it possible for companies such as printers, copy shops, engravers and sign makers to become distributors in their local markets for branded merchandise without having to invest anything more than a little of their time. With over twenty one years of experience, Listawood are one of the largest manufacturers of promotional products in Europe. They are offering start-up packages for new distributors which include unbranded product catalogues to use as their own, sales presentation kits for all product ranges, access to an unbranded website, e-mail shots and full product training and support. Through their extensive range, distributors will have access to over 300 different promotional products without having to spend hours searching on the internet for a reliable supplier or investing precious time and money manufacturing the products themselves. They believe that there is an enormous potential market, as yet unrealised within the local economies of every town in the UK. The size of the UK promotional gift market is currently estimated at around £900 million but has the potential to be much larger if more companies were aware of the marketing effectiveness of business gifts as opposed to the more traditional methods of advertising. Although well understood by large corporations many SMEs don’t realise that for only the cost of a small advert in a local newspaper that might be seen once, you can produce around 500 personalised mouse mats which will stay on the target audiences’ desk for months if not years and be seen daily. At present, this is more widely understood in the US, where the market is proportionally much larger. In the UK, the main users of promotional merchandise are large blue chip companies, whereas in the US many smaller companies realise how effective promotional merchandise can be; this presents businesses in the UK with a great opportunity to grow sales by selling business gifts to their existing customer base. Taxi firms for example, often give a card to their customers after a journey in the hope that they will keep it, and call them the next time they need a cab. Instead they could supply a fridge magnet branded with their logo and contact details which is much less likely to be discarded; indeed it is likely to be placed on the fridge door - one of the most prominent positions in the household. Similarly, the same product also

other promotional material being purchased from us. Selling promotional merchandise has lead to an increase in our turnover during the past year” Added Steven. In a recent survey carried out by the BPMA (British Promotional Merchandise Association) 92% of respondents said that they believe branded promotional merchandise increases company and brand awareness. 76% of the people surveyed said that they could name a brand or company featured on promotional merchandise on their desk without having to look for confirmation and over half had purchased from companies branded on promotional merchandise on their desk.

provides an excellent means for local fast food chains to promote their business. They don’t realise this at the moment, but could easily be persuaded by their contracted sign maker or the printer they trust to produce their menus, business cards and other sales literature. Many print and engraving businesses are already involved in the supply of promotional products having invested in heat presses and dye sublimation transfer systems. Although excellent for the production of very short-runs, equipment of this kind cannot practically be used to produce larger runs cost effectively and they are limited in the range of items they can produce. It is not possible, for example to produce enormously popular promotional products like pens, paper pads or USB flash drives. Access to Listawoods wider product range and substantial production capabilities will supplement the offering of these companies; extending their product lines, without increasing their sales costs and enabling them to fulfil much larger order sizes quickly and easily. Crowes of Norwich have been working with Listawood for the past year selling business gifts. As one of East Anglia’s leading commercial colour print specialists with over 200 years experience in the printing industry, Crowes have built up an established customer base and saw an opportunity to grow their business by selling business gifts. “Listawood provided us with the necessary literature, samples, training and presentation kits to get up and running selling business gifts” Commented Steven Pyke, Commercial Manager at Crowes. “We started to get enquiries and orders as soon as we showed our customers the range of promotional merchandise on offer. These orders were not instead of our standard offering but used to complement

SO HOW DOES IT WORK? The focus of the distributor is to secure orders for the promotional products from their customers. To make this as straightforward as possible Listawood have produced professional sales sample kits, product catalogues, skin websites and recommended product price lists. Listawood will offer as much support and guidance as is required through their dedicated customer service teams who are on hand to help with enquiries and orders. Once the order is placed, Listawood take care of every aspect of production — from proof preparation to delivery of the finished goods into the end user. Distributors are able to monitor order progress either via their dedicated customer service team at Listawood, or online 24 hours a day, seven days a week using their web based sales order tracking system. “The fact that we only sell through distributors works incredibly well. We take care of the manufacturing side, whilst our distributors manage the relationship with the end user company and secure the sales” commented Listawoods Managing Director, Alex Turner. “Our business model is designed to make it as easy as possible for distributors to make very healthy profits by selling our products to the end user.” Listawood Promotional Products are an award winning UK manufacturer of promotional merchandise; having won six customer service awards in 2009, including the BPMA’s prestigious “Supplier of the Year” Award. They supply virtually all of the most frequently asked for promotional items and have invested heavily in technology to ensure that their products are the most competitive in the industry. Their 70,000 square foot factory in Norfolk is equipped with a wide array of printing and finishing equipment enabling them to retain complete control of the production process thereby providing the best possible service to their distributors.

RING IT ON girls. This month’s joke postbag is mainly from the fairer sex, the guys contributions were also on the main part, unprintable. So chaps, you brought this on yourself, so just sit back and think of england or whatever other country does it for you. Married Bliss.

At a cocktail party, one woman said to another, “Aren’t you wearing your wedding ring on the wrong finger?” “Yes, I am. I married the wrong man.” A lady inserted an ad in the classifieds: “Husband Wanted”. Next day she received a hundred letters. They all said the same thing: “You can have mine.” When a woman steals your husband, there is no better revenge than to let her keep him. A woman is incomplete until she is married. Then she is finished. A young son asked, “Is it true Dad, that in some parts of Africa a man doesn’t know his wife until he marries her?” Dad replied, “That happens in every country, son.” Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence.

Just think, if it weren’t for marriage, men would go through life thinking they had no faults at all. First guy says, “My wife’s an angel!” Second guy remarks, “You’re lucky, mine’s still alive.” AND NOW FOR THE FAVOURITE… Husband and wife are waiting at the bus stop with their nine children. A blind man joins them after a few minutes. When the bus arrives, they find it overloaded and only the wife and the nine kids are able to fit onto the bus. So the husband and the blind man decide to walk. After a while, the husband gets irritated by the ticking of the stick of the blind man as he taps it on the pathway, and says to him, “Why don’t you put a piece of rubber at the end of your stick? That ticking sound is driving me crazy.” The blind man replies, “If you had put a rubber at the end of YOUR stick, we’d be riding the bus, so shut up.

The animals were bored. Finally, the lion had an idea. “I know a really exciting game that the humans play called football. I’ve seen it on T.V.” He proceeded to describe it to the rest of the animals and they all got excited about it so they decided to play. They went out to the field and chose up teams and were ready to begin. The lion’s team received. They were able to get two first downs and then had to punt. The mule punted and the rhino was back deep for the kick. He caught the ball, lowered his head and charged. First, he crushed a roadrunner, then two rabbits. He gored a wildebeast, knocked over two cows, and broke through to daylight, scoring six. Unfortunately, they lacked a placekicker, and the score remained 6 - 0. Late in the first half the lion’s team scored a touchdown and the mule kicked the extra point. The lion’s team led at halftime 7 - 6. In the locker room, the lion gave a peptalk. “Look you guys. We can win this game. We’ve got the lead and they only have one real threat. We’ve got to keep the ball away from the rhino, he’s a killer. Mule, when you kick off be sure to keep it away from the rhino.” The second half began. Just as the mule was about to kick off, the rhino’s team changed formation and the ball

went directly to the rhino. Once again, the rhino lowered his head and was off running. First, he stomped two gazelles. He skewered a zebra, and bulldozed an elephant out of the way. It looked like he was home free. Suddenly at the twenty yard line, he dropped over dead. There were no other animals in sight anywhere near him. The lion went over to see what had happened. Right next to the dead rhino he saw a small centipede. “Did you do this?” he asked the centipede. “Yeah, I did.” the centipede replied. The lion retorted, “Where were you during the first half?” “I was putting on my shoes.”

Wrong E-mail Address! Lesson to be learned from typing the wrong email address: A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel plans. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realising his error, sent the email. Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. the computer screen which read: To: My loving wife Subject: I’ve arrived Date: May 9th, 2005 I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then. Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was. P.S. sure is freaking hot down here!!!!!

The Blind Mans Salesman Joke

A blind man and his guide dog enter a Bar and find their way to a bar stool. After ordering a drink, and sitting there for a while, the blind guy yells to the bartender, “Hey, you wanna hear a salesman joke?” The bar immediately becomes absolutely quiet. In a husky, deep voice, the woman next to him says, “Before you tell that joke, you should know something. The bartender is a saleslady, the bouncer is a salesman and I’m a 6’ tall, 200 lb. reprographic consultant with a black belt in karate. What’s more, the woman sitting next to me is printer sales advisor and she’s a weight lifter. The lady to your right is a sales exec, and she’s a pro wrestler. Think about it seriously, Mister. You still wanna tell that joke?” The blind guy thinks a moment and says, “Nah, not if I’m gonna have to explain it five times.”

Staff IQ Test

Below are four (4) questions and a bonus question. You have to answer them instantly. You can’t take your time, answer all of them immediately. OK? Let’s find out just how clever you really are. Ready? GO!!! First Question: You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in? Answer: If you answered that you are first, and then you are absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second! Try not to screw up in the next question.

walks into a saloon in the Old Wild West.

To answer the second question, don’t take as much time as you took for the first question. Second Question: If you overtake the last person, then you are...? Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, and then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST Person? You’re not very good at this! Are you? Third Question: Very tricky maths! Note: This must be done in your head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it. Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000 Now add 10. What is the total? Did you get 5000? The correct answer is actually 4100. Don’t believe it? Check with your calculator! Today is definitely not your day. Maybe you will get the last question right? Fourth Question: Mary’s father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter? Answer: Nunu? NO! Of course not. Her name is Mary. Read the question again Okay, now the bonus round: There is a mute person who wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing one’s teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done. Now if there is a blind man who wishes to buy a pair of sunglasses, how should he express himself? He just has to open his mouth and ask, so simple.

Things You’d Like to Say Out Loud at Work

I can see your point, but I still think you’re full of sh*t. I don’t know what your problem is, but I’ll bet it’s hard to pronounce. How about never? Is never good for you? I see you’ve set aside this special time to humiliate yourself in public.

He sidles up to the bar and announces,

31

I’m really easy to get along with once you people learn to see it my way. I’ll try being nicer if you’ll try being smarter. I’m out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message. I don’t work here. I’m a consultant. It sounds like English, but I can’t understand a damn word you’re saying. Ahhh...I see the screw-up fairy has visited us again. I like you. You remind me of myself when I was young and stupid. You are validating my inherent mistrust of strangers. I have plenty of talent and vision. I just don’t give a damn. I’m already visualizing the duct tape over your mouth. I will always cherish the initial misconceptions I had about you. Thank you. We’re all refreshed and challenged by your unique point of view. The fact that no one understands you doesn’t mean you’re an artist. Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental. What am I? Flypaper for freaks!? I’m not being rude. You’re just insignificant. It’s a thankless job, but I’ve got a lot of Karma to burn off. And your crybaby whiny-assed opinion would be...? Do I look like a people person? This isn’t an office. It’s Hell with fluorescent lighting. I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left. Sarcasm is just one more service we offer. If I throw a stick, will you leave? Errors have been made. Others will be blamed. Whatever kind of look you were going for, you missed. I’m trying to imagine you with a personality. Can I trade this job for what’s behind door #1? Too many freaks, not enough circuses. Nice perfume. Must you marinate in it? Chaos, panic, and disorder - my work here is done. How do I set a laser printer to stun? I thought I wanted a career. Turns out I just wanted a salary. Oh I get it... like humour... but different.

“I’m looking for the man who shot my paw.”
