TESTIMONIAL
“My father, Colin Heap, is a very independent man. Unfortunately he had a stroke, which we didn’t expect or plan for — as if you can. Having been in hospital for 6 months he told us he wanted to go home. My brother and I want to do the best for him but he wanted his independence. When Tom, from Angelcare, arrived at our house for an interview to talk to dad and see what he needed (bearing in mind his speech was very poor and he had no movement in his right side) Tom advised, suggested and explained talking all the time to my father. Dad realised that perhaps his wish was about to come true. That was two years ago and since then Angelcare have taken care of my father. His regular carers have become very important to him and keep him laughing and upbeat. If ever there is a problem it is always easy to sort out mainly by the staff themselves who notice any change in his health or attitude. As my father is 85 I feel very lucky that we have the support and reliability of Angelcare.” Lesley Sharpe, daughter.

Welcome to the Golden Years Roadshow
W
elcome to the first Golden Years Road show. We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our exhibitors and visitors at the event. A special Thank You is reserved for our sponsors Brearleys Solicitors, Kirkwood Hospice and Overgate Hospice who have worked very hard behind the scenes to help make the day fun, entertaining and hopefully a big success. We hope that everyone joins in and enjoys the day, which has brought together all the elements of successful shows that have gone before. Above all we have tried to make the event “local and community based”, while still being fun and informative. To the exhibitors, thank you, for having faith in the Golden Years Roadshow Event and been prepared to try something new which is growing and developing. Should you have any opinions or new ideas to help improve the road shows, please feel free to email us with your comments. Equally should you wish to be involved with future events also drop us an email. The team would love to speak to you. To the visitors, a great big thank you as without you this would all be pointless. We hope that you will be able to take something away from today’s event whether it is a new found love for “Zumba”, or even a better understanding of what you need to do to improve your finances. Some of you may even be going home with prizes? Be sure to visit the treasure hunt, the quiz zone, and the balloon race! All are offering free prizes and a bit of fun on both floors of the Exhibition. We would also like to say a thank you to all the exhibitors who have tried to raise much needed funds for both Hospices at the exhibition. They have been the inspiration for this event, and we do hope that the event has managed to raise a nice amount of funds for both the hospices. Finally, a big Thank You to Robbie Paul and The Huddersfield Giants who have taken time out of their busy schedules to be with us today. Not least The Big G and the players who have come to sign autographs straight from training. Please make sure you spin the roulette wheel before you go home as all proceeds are again going to both Hospices. A big thank you goes to Jonny Hampson and his team for all their hard work. The next Roadshow event will be held in Sheffield in August so if you would like to come along or know someone who does please feel free to contact the Golden Years Roadshow staff. Finally big thank you to all of the staff, volunteers and management who have worked tirelessly to make this event the success we feel it will be. JUNE 2012 • GOLDEN YEARS ROADSHOW

TRAVEL
The world is your oyster with a good travel agent...
Many of us dream of holidaying in the destinations we see on TV, whether it’s a cookery programme showing tantalising dishes across the world, a nature programme showcasing stunning natural beauty, or even just one of the soaps!
T
here’s an easy way to take you to that enticing destination – simply ask a good travel agent. They’ll know who does what, where and when and, if not, they can easily find out for you. With a travel agent, your dream holiday is just a phone call or visit away... For example, a recent TV show highlighted the wonderful sights of Budapest, Prague and Vienna. A good travel agent will find a variety of ways for you to explore these magnificent Imperial cities. You could cruise the River Danube and see these wonderful places – plus a few others – without having to pack and unpack your suitcase. Shearings Holidays offer a 10-day river cruise on the MV Esmeralda from just £759, travelling on 26th June. If you prefer to fly, how about a city break? Sample products include 3 nights in Budapest from £176 (10th Sept) or 3 nights in Prague from £233 (2 Sept, both with Jet 2 Holidays). You could enjoy a tour by rail with Great Rail Journeys - Great Imperial Cities holiday (£1878) or join an escorted coach
4
tour of all three cities (9 days from £503, Shearings Holidays, travelling 7th July). Prefer something closer to home? I’m sure you’ve seen Michael Portillo’s Great British Railway Journeys series, or maybe you remember Michael Palin’s series from a few years back. Many companies offer 5 or 8 day holidays including coach travel from your local town, with day trips aboard these famous railway lines included in the price. Thinking of somewhere a little further afield? Your travel agent will have hundreds of holiday ideas for you. You could take an adventure trip into South America or Indochina. Head to the USA, perhaps incorporating a cruise from Miami around the Caribbean. Combine impressive Dubai with the Indian Ocean. Or take a multi-centre package exploring the Far East. All this and much, much more awaits at your local travel agents. They’ll do all the research, preparation and planning, so all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy your holiday. As the title says, the world really is your oyster...

WE ARE SUPPORTING…
Overgate Hospice simply cares Caring for people in Carlderdale, Overgate Hospice aim is to care for the whole person to give them the best possible quality of life. Overgate Hospice provide support for their families and carers.
O
vergate Hospice provides care to people with life-limiting illnesses such as cancer. At Overgate Hospice we know that we cannot add days to the life of our patients but with your support we can add life to the days they have left All this care is provided free of charge. We do not ask for a penny for our services yet the cost of providing this care has
now reached £2.3 million. £1.7 million of this is raised by the generous people of Calderdale each and every year. Because you care, we can and have done for 30 years. To find out ways you can support Overgate Hospice please visit our website; www.overgatehospice.org.uk, call our fundraising team; 01422 387121 or pop into one of our charity shops. n
25 years of Care in Kirklees On the 17th March 2012, Kirkwood Hospice celebrated a landmark – its 25th anniversary.
I
n June 1981, eight people met at the home of David Stocks to discuss the possibility of launching a local hospice appeal. That first meeting resulted in a commitment to begin fundraising and almost six years later, on 19th February 1986 David Stocks and Dr Alan Barlow MD laid the foundation stone for the new hospice building. In 1987, the services provided by the Hospice extended only as far as the in-patient unit. However, 25 years on and the situation is quite different. Today in addition to the Hospice’s 16 in-patient beds there is a thriving day care service in the Support & Therapy Centre, bereavement services for families via Kirkwood’s specialist Family Care Team and a team of palliative care nurses, providing advice and support in patients’ own homes. Contrary to popular belief, a hospice is not only a place people go at the end of their lives. Hospice services have developed over the years and pain and symptom 6
management is an important part of the care now provided. This means that patients may visit the hospice many times as their illness progresses. In 2012, it will cost over £11,500 every day to maintain services at the Hospice, with over 80% funded from voluntary donations. However, every year, the people of Kirklees support the Hospice and it is because of this support that the Hospice celebrated 25 years of care on 17th March 2012. For this support, everyone at the Hospice would like to express their sincere thanks to each and every one of you. For further information about Kirkwood please ring the Hospice on 01484 557911, or visit the website at www.kirkwoodhospice.co.uk n GOLDEN YEARS ROADSHOW • JUNE 2012

WILLS AND PROBATE
What is lifetime planning? Nick Battye from Brearleys Solicitors looks at lifetime planning.
How do you manage your assets and how minimise any tax burden?
I
f you are reading this then no doubt you have attended the golden years roadshow with questions and queries relating to planning for the future and protecting your assets Brearleys Solicitors are proud to be the sponsors of the event and hope that the information contained within this article and within the packs that we are distributing will go some way to answering your questions It is impossible for us to put down in a few words all of the issues that surround age-related concerns and planning for the future. For this reason we are giving advice through workshops in the morning and in the afternoon dealing with popular topics where your contribution and questions will be welcome When planning for the future in general terms you should be considering firstly protection of your assets during your lifetime and secondly what will happen upon your death Lifetime planning of assets can involve for example giving assets away or putting them in trust. Whatever you do can have significant consequences in connection with future payment of tax and is essential that you obtain 8
expert advice before you undertake any of these steps will stop Lifetime planning also involves looking at what will happen if you should unfortunately lose capacity so for example we would like to consider with you the question of implementing a power of attorney or other such device to ensure that your affairs can be properly managed with a minimum of expense Planning in respect of your death usually involves a will but is not necessarily limited to this and there are many issues to be considered that we can assist you with planning for your death and hopefully so as to minimise your tax burden We are specialist and experts in all of these matters and as a result are able to advise about every aspect of both your lifetime planning and about how to minimise disruption and expense upon your death. As solicitors we all too often are involved in matters which do not go to plan whether other solicitors have provided inadequate advice or even where members of the family have attempted to deal with the matters themselves. It is unfortunately the case that in these circumstances the matter can often become hotly disputed within the family and
extremely expensive to resolve We believe and frequently advise that with proper planning and foresight expense can be minimised and the family around you can be properly provided for without the need for acrimony upon your death We appreciate that often it is uncomfortable to talk about planning during your lifetime and ultimately death but to put it off is to really put off the inevitable it is better to get proper advice now and to ensure that this advice is regularly reviewed as we are very often told that by doing this it gives our clients peace of mind in knowing that they are properly advised and prepared. Our stand is immediately as you enter on the left-hand side and we will be very pleased to speak to you about any particular issues that you may have. Please take a pack which has lots of information in there to give a more detailed overview of the matters that you should be considering during your lifetime and which are intended as an assistance to you in considering seeking further advice so that we may assist you in properly preparing for these matters Please also take the time to listen to the seminars we are providing at 11am and 2pm the 1st of which will cover lifetime related issues for example powers of attorney and tax planning, the 2nd of which will cover provision for death in Wills and the pitfalls of attempting to do it yourself or getting somebody else who is not specialist or qualified to do it for you. Particularly at the 2nd of the seminars we would be very pleased if you would like to bring your Wills so that we can go through them together and perhaps discuss any potential problems that can be found. Please note that this will be on a first-come first-served basis due to limitations of time Nick Battye, partner Brearleys Solicitors NickBattye@BrearleysSolicitors.com Telephone: 0800 046 9586 GOLDEN YEARS ROADSHOW • JUNE 2012
