elcome to the Leeds Golden Years Roadshow. We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our exhibitors and visitors at the event. A special ‘thank you’ is reserved for our sponsors Denture Excellence, St. Gemma’s Hospice who have worked very hard behind the scenes to help make the day fun, entertaining and hopefully a big success. Above all we have tried to make the event ‘local and community based’, while still being fun and informative. To the exhibitors ‘thank you’ for coming along to the Leeds Golden Years Roadshow Event and been prepared to try something new which is growing and developing. Should you have any opinions or new ideas to help improve the road shows, please feel free to email us at info@goldenyearsroadshow.co.uk with your comments. Equally should you wish to be involved with future events also drop us a line at the same email address. The team would love to speak to you. To the visitors, a great big ‘thank you’ as

without you this would all be pointless. We hope that you will be able to take something away from today’s event whether it is a new found love for ‘Zumba’, or even a better understanding of what you need to do to improve your finances. Some of you may even be going home with prizes? Be sure to try the treasure hunt, the quiz zone, and the balloon race! All are offering free prizes and a bit of fun on both floors of the exhibition. We would also like to say a ‘thank you’ to all the exhibitors who have tried to raise much needed funds for The Hospice at the exhibition. They have been the inspiration for this event, and we do hope that the event has managed to raise a nice amount of funds for them. Please make sure you spin the roulette wheel before you go home as all proceeds are again going to St. Gemma’s. Finally a ‘big thank you’ to all of the staff, volunteers and management who have worked tirelessly to make this event the success we hope it will be.

EMPOWERING CHOICE

“Denture wearers want a range of treatment options that put them in control of cost and treatment options. We do this by offering our customers a complete range of denture options, from basic replacement dentures to complex Confi - Denture™ facelift solutions and Implant stabilised denture treatments for ultimate confidence and appearance,” continued David. “We are seeing a lot of new customers coming to us after being tempted by cheap ‘deals’, from unregistered and inexperienced people…. more often than not they are left disappointed with very poor results, increased discomfort, unsuitable function and unsightly appearance. Yes, you can get cheap dentures elsewhere; however, cheap dentures are just that, cheap, and should be avoided, after all, your dentures are vital to your everyday life and your smile is the first thing you present to the world, wouldn’t you want that statement about you to be the right one! At Denture Excellence our name says it all! Our ethic is about delivering excellence in all areas, great dentures, superior customer service and attention and, most importantly, delivering results, at a fair and affordable price for our customers.”

Dentures... Getting it right By Clive Walkden

D

id you know that the majority of denture wearers struggle daily with the problem of loose and uncomfortable dentures? Badly designed dentures not only cause this discomfort but can greatly affect a denture wearer’s appearance, causing that premature aged look so often associated with denture wearing… well it doesn’t have to be that way. David Coates CDT RCS (Eng) RDT, Clinical Denture Expert at Denture Excellence talks to us about choosing the right denture option. Denture Excellence is recognised as the leader in all things dentures and designing the most natural, comfortable denture solutions possible, having carried many thousands of denture treatments across the UK in their expert denture clinics and using the most advanced denture technology available today. “If you’re considering having new dentures to replace an old worn out set or wish to look years younger as a denture wearer, you naturally want the best care, a safe and hygienic environment and the fastest possible treatment,“ said David. “Most importantly if you’re going to pay good money, you want to see results in both comfort and a great, natural appearance. This is why we use only the latest generation of hand-crafted natural-effect teeth, the highest grade denture materials and the latest denture technology. 6

THE FACTS!

Dentures are in constant use almost 24 hours a day, they have to survive in excess of 5kg per square inch biting forces in one of the most hostile areas of the body, and it’s a wonder they survive at all! Most complaints about dentures revolve around the lower denture, with movement causing pain and soreness. This trauma can greatly affect one’s life, socially and physically, something the majority of denture wearers have to live with on a daily basis. Fortunately with today’s technology there are fantastic solutions for most denture wearers’ problems. Stabilising dentures with Denture Implant therapy is just one very successful method that can be used to solve the problem of unstable dentures. In many cases it’s just a matter of careful evaluation and correcting bad design.

GETTING IT RIGHT

To design a successful denture takes years of experience and technical knowledge, dedication and an ability to empathise with a denture wearer’s needs and expectations. The most important step is choosing the most reputable and experienced denture expert with the right skills and experience. To visit David or any Denture Excellence Denture Clinic all you need do is book in for a personal denture consultation, it’s FREE and without obligation, or go online to find your nearest clinic at www.dentureexcellence.co.uk to learn more about how David and Denture Excellence can help you solve all your denture problems. WE ARE SUPPORTING…

St. Gemma’s Hospice Dear Supporter St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds is proud to be the charity beneficiary of the Golden Years Roadshow. St Gemma’s is for people who have life threatening illnesses where there are difficult symptoms to be managed. Care is based on a simple idea – that the person is more than the illness. Care is offered to patients and their carers in the Hospice’s 32 bed In-Patient Unit, through our community team and via our Day Services, which includes a Day Hospice and OutPatient’s department. Families and carers are also supported by the Hospice’s specialist bereavement workers who provide support to all including children and young people. In the last year, St Gemma’s cared for over 2,500 local people. The services we provide are free of charge to those in our care, but are not free to provide. Our annual running costs for 2012/13 are £8.6million, with the majority of this to be raised through the generosity of people, businesses and organisations in Leeds. St Gemma’s is rooted in the local community and would not be able to care for local people without your valuable support. On behalf of everyone associated with the Hospice, thank you for attending and contributing towards our work.

GOLDEN YEARS

The top ten benefits of a golden age

Fifties are the new golden age

1. Being in relatively good health 2. Having more time to enjoy life 3. Being In a relatively good financial position 4. Having a relationship that is stronger than ever 5. Being comfortable with your body 6. Happiness with life achievements so far 7. The mortgage being paid off 8. Knowing what you want from life 9. Having children who are happy and content with their lives 10. Being able to take lots of holidays.

If you’ve hit 45 and are feeling down in the dumps, don’t despair — the good times are on their way.

O

k, so your face has a few extra lines and there are a couple of surplus inches around your waist, but new research has shown that we are actually getting happier as we get older. A study of 10,000 people across the UK has revealed that our mental satisfaction increases after middle age, despite a drop in our physical quality of life. Dr Saverio Stranges, who led the research at Warwick University, said: “It’s obvious that people’s physical quality of life deteriorates as they age, but what is interesting is that their mental well-being doesn’t deteriorate – in fact it increases. He said, ”We suggest that this could be due to better coping abilities, an interpretation supported by previous research showing older people tend to have internal mechanisms to deal better with hardship or negative circumstances than those who are younger. ”It could also be due to a lowering of expectations from life, with older people less likely to put pressure on themselves in the personal and professional spheres. ”The study analysed lifestyle and health patterns to measure quality of life using eight different factors including perception of general health, pain, social functioning and mental health. It also looked at being overweight, and found that people with a BMI of more than 30 showed a similar mental quality of life level to those considered to be a healthy weight. The effect of sleep on quality of life also formed part of the study and discovered that people who spend between six and eight hours in bed have better physical and mental health scores than those who slept fewer than six or more than eight hours a night. The findings echo those of a survey of more than 1,500 people aged 50 and over by insurance company Engage Mutual.

Being in a strong relationship, having paid off the mortgage and the children being happy and independent are key to a golden age in your fifties with 44% of those questioned saying they are more content with their lives than ever before. With increased life expectancy, being 50 is considered to be relatively young and those who have managed to stay healthy and been able to plan their finances may start to feel the benefit with more cash to spend on holidays and hobbies, rather than working just to pay the mortgage. Many parents reported a sense of relief when their children settled down with 52% saying they enjoy having more time on their hands, and more than a fifth enjoying a great social life and good circle of friends. Another big bonus is that the things we worried about in our twenties and thirties no longer seem so important, with 85% of over 50s admitting that they have long ceased to care about relatively trivial and transient issues. And over a third say they no longer worry about whether they are good looking or thin. n This article was downloaded from www.freefeatures.com.

Community care

Bedford Court A modern care community for older people

B

edford Court supports older people to maintain their independence and live full and active lives. It includes a choice of accommodation type and level of support, making it suitable for people who require the full services of a registered care home, as well as those who wish to plan ahead for the future. Situated in the popular village of

Horsforth to the north of Leeds, Bedford Court is within a short walk of an array of shops and amenities and has good public transport links to Leeds city centre. Social and leisure activities are an integral part of life at Bedford Court and there are lots of opportunities to take part in events and organised excursions. However, personal choice means that you can enjoy the lifestyle you want and join in as little or as

often as you choose. You will find that the accommodation at Bedford Court is spacious and modern, with a high quality finish and enhanced security features. It has been designed to the national standard ‘Lifetime Homes’, which means that the buildings are flexible to changing needs, are wheelchair accessible and can easily accommodate aids and adaptations. For additional peace of mind, each home is fitted with an Emergency Call System, so that you can summon immediate assistance if you get into difficulties. It also acts as an intruder alarm. Care and support is provided by our dedicated team of highly skilled, friendly staff. At Bedford Court, our approach is to concentrate on what each person can do and achieve, rather than focus on health restrictions – this works towards creating a happy and fulfilling environment to live. Bedford Court is owned by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, a charity that has specialised in the provision of housing and care support services for over a century. This means you can be sure you are in safe hands. Contact us today to arrange a ‘no obligation’ visit and informal chat.

How much income would you like to receive in retirement? Whether retirement is many years away or just round the corner, unless you start planning for retirement now, there is a great danger that you could outlive our savings. You need to decide: • • • • •

What are your aims when you retire? How do you plan to achieve them? Are you on track to achieve your aims? When did you last review your pension plans? Are you happy with the performance of your existing policies?

Choosing how your retirement income is provided is an important decision. You need to be sure that you will have enough money to last you the rest of your life – and often once you have chosen an option you can’t change your mind later.

What you need to consider as you approach retirement… • • • • • •

Do I want to keep working? What income will I need to meet my outgoings? How long do I need an income to last? What do I want to do with my increased leisure time? Do I want a lump sum of tax-free cash? What do I want to happen to my pension fund when I die?

It could be said that the hardest thing about retirement planning is thinking about it so please do not hesitate to contact us to speak to one of our friendly Advisers for a no obligation consultation where we can aim to help you achieve your financial aspirations.
