Lisa and her team at Handprints Baby and Toddler Groups have been extremely busy raising pots of money for charity since our last edition and we just wanted to celebrate their success. So many parents have walked, run, raffled, dug deep, and supported ladies nights that Handprints Baby and Toddler

Groups in Bristol have raised an amazing £760 charity and that total is still going up! Between 20th – 26th July Handprints will be taking part in the Barnardo’s Big Toddle and have a target of another £800 in that week – all under 5’s are welcome with their parents so why not join in!

Making an alternative choice Complementary therapies for new and expectant mums

H

aving both experienced complementary therapies in different ways Lisa and I were keen to explore how a different treatments and therapies can benefit mums to be and new parents. We spoke to a range of therapists to find out more and work out if it really is “all in the mind.”

What are “complementary therapies”? Complementary therapies, such as acupuncture and homeopathy, are a conventional medicine-free form of treatment, this means they can be suitable to use during pregnancy. Therapies for expectant and new parents range from hypnotherapy to Baby Massage, Reflexology – for babies and during pregnancy, osteopathy, aromatherapy, acupuncture and shiatsu. Deb Campbell from The Almond Tree Practice in Bristol explains more… “Looking after yourself is really important when you’re expecting a baby. Stress, tiredness and even anxiety can take its toll on you. Complementary therapies are really beneficial for pregnant mums, helping them stay in good health throughout and even helping with things like morning sickness and back ache. Over recent years, more and more people have been finding out just how effective complementary therapies are - both physically and emotionally. They should never replace a visit to the doctor if you’re worried about something your GP or midwife should be your first point of contact.“

Hypnotherapy Most women who have had hypnotherapy in preparation for the birth of their baby say their labour was an easier and less stressful experience for both mum and baby. Hypnotherapy is really easy. Ideally, you have 6 weekly sessions from about week 32, and over the weeks you will learn techniques to help you relax and manage the birth, so when you go into labour you’ll feel much more able to cope. (You 4 • Handprints Magazine • July 2009 Handprints 0709 Issue 4 AW.indd 4

don’t have to take the hypnotherapist into labour with you!) An added bonus is because there’s less likelihood of you needing drugs, recovery time is much quicker. Hypnotherapy is nothing like you see on TV, it’s completely safe and natural and helps you feel in control at all times. Lucy used hypnotherapy in her first pregnancy and can recommend its benefits – “although I didn’t think so at the time. I gave birth using just gas and air for pain relief. I didn’t use it for my second birth and had a much less pleasant experience requiring an epidural and regretted not taking the time to prepare using hypnotherapy again”. Jon Hosgood offers a free consultation so you can ask lots of questions without committing yourself. He’s based at The Almond Tree Practice 0117 9756940

Reflexology Reflexology is a type of massage therapy involving parts of the feet, and sometimes the hands and the ears. Christine Lamont is a complementary therapist who offers Reflexology and Baby Reflex classes for expectant and new mums. She tells us more.

health “Reflexology is a very relaxing treatment for everyone, including Mums to be. It can help with those distressing symptoms such as backache, nausea, insomnia, constipation and heartburn. It can help you cope with the fears and anxieties, which are natural when going through such a big change in your life. Reflexology can relax mums, and ‘balance’ the hormones to allow the birth to progress smoothly. It is thought that babies are more settled and calm when they have had Reflexology in the womb!”

Baby Reflex and Baby Massage

Christine runs courses to teach Mums (and Dads) how to give their babies massage and baby reflexology. Baby Massage is a simple massage routine especially adapted for babies. It’s easy to learn and lovely to do. You learn over 3 weeks, of an hour each week, gradually building your confidence at a pace to suit you. Each mum and Baby takes away a detailed Manual, and a small bottle of massage oil. Baby ‘Reflex’ is a specially adapted Reflexology routine for babies. The classes run in a similar way

to baby massage, but parents also practice the reflexology moves on each other before giving to their babies. Parents take away some illustrated ‘Foot charts’ as a reminder of the routine, when you do it at home.

Handprints Advice Consult your GP or Midwife before embarking on any complementary therapies. If you’re less than 12 weeks pregnant, it’s best to discuss with the therapist first if you’re thinking of having a treatment.

Going to Big School in September 2010?

W

here will your child be in September 2010? For those of you with pre-school children who will be 4 before 31st August 2010 the answer to that may be “Big School!”

We spoke to Bristol City Council and Mr Barr, Headteacher at Meadowbrook School in Bradley Stoke, South Gloucestershire to find out what you need to do if your child will be starting school in 2010.

Make sure you are on time! You need to apply by 23rd October 2009 – DO NOT MISS THIS DEADLINE! You can do this by using the form in the back of a booklet called “Admission to Primary School” which is available in South Gloucestershire from local primary schools or online. In Bristol this is available online using the “Primary Application Form” – see our tips box for web address. DO NOT miss the deadline for your application. If your application is late, your choice of school will not be considered until your LEA have finished dealing with the applications that arrived on time.

Open Days

On the application form parents are able to give a choice of 3 schools, in order of preference, and list reasons for their choice. South Gloucestershire LEA or Bristol LEA are responsible for allocating school places, NOT the school. Your chance of being offered your first choice of school will depend on factors such as: how many apply to the school; where they live; how many have brothers and sisters already at the school.

If you have the opportunity to attend an Open Day – take it. Open Days will held by most schools in September and October 2009. If you do not see an Open Day for a particular school advertised, ring the school’s office for details. If you miss an open day, or would like to visit the school again, arrange an appointment with the school’s head teacher. When you visit ask questions. The more you know, the easier it will be to make your choice. Visit as many schools as you can. Each school will offer something different or have a different atmosphere.

Do your Homework

It’s YOUR choice

As a parent or carer this application can also be one the toughest decisions you have made yet. There is plenty of information and advice available such as Ofsted Reports, league tables and school prospectus’ or websites but nothing beats a visit to the school either on an Open Day or a personal appointment.

Whilst its important to listen to other peoples’ opinions about a school, trust your own judgement. Don’t rely on rumours and remember this is your decision. Remember your family are joining a school community that you will be part of for the next seven years.

How are places allocated?

Open Days & Visits – Handprints First impressions are often right so ask yourself a few questions… ✔ Are the children happy and absorbed? ✔ Are staff friendly? ✔ Is the classroom bright and cheerful? ✔ Is the Head enthusiastic and open when answering questions? ✔ Is there a cheerful and busy atmosphere? ✔ Do the staff show an interest in your child as an individual?

Questions to ask the school ✔ Make sure you understand the school’s discipline procedure and attitude towards bullying. ✔ Does it have a Paarent Teacher Association? ✔ Are parents encouraged to help out in the classroom? ✔ Is the school an extended school offering additional clubs or care outside of school hours? (Important for parents who work).

Ofsted & League Tables – what are they? Ofsted Reports Ofsted inspects all state schools in England at least every three years and produce an Inspection Report. This report includes an overall assessment of the school’s effectiveness, along with specific judgements on a range of areas each are made on a four point scale: 1= outstanding 2 = good 3 = satisfactory 4 =inadequate The report also indicates what the school should do to improve. The school is expected to use Ofsted’s recommendations as a basis for making improvements as quickly as possible. Handprints tip – a three year old Ofsted report may well be out of date and a school may have changed considerably in that time.

League Tables

Meadowbrook primary Bradley Stoke

Every year the Department for Children, Schools and Families publishes information on the achievement and attainment of pupils in all schools from the age of 10. They list National Curriculum test results for each school in England and show how they compare with other schools. Handprints Tip - Test results will not give you a complete picture of a school, but they may help you to form a fuller impression of a school you are considering.

Stay Cool!

Summer Sun Advice from our local health visiting team Protecting children from the sun

7) Use sunscreen wisely

Young skin is delicate and very easily damaged by the sun. All children should be protected from the sun. Babies under six months are advised to be kept out of direct sunlight, especially around midday.

Use at least a factor 15 sunscreen and choose a brand that has a four or five star rating. Apply to areas that cannot be protected by clothing, such as the face, ears, feet and backs of hands. Choose sunscreens that are formulated for children and babies skin. These products are less likely to contain alcohol or fragrances that might irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions.

Storing up trouble for later life Skin cancer is very rare in children. But many skin cancers take years to develop. Studies have found that sunburn during childhood can increase the risk of skin cancer later on in life. This is why it is important to ensure that children stay safe in the sun.

8) Apply sunscreen regularly

Teaching children safe sun habits whilst they are young sets a good pattern for later life.

Put some on before children go outdoors, and then reapply at least every two hours. Use waterproof brands if children are swimming or playing outdoor with water, and reapply after towelling.

2) Remember you can burn in the UK

9) Don’t forget school times

The Great British sun is quite capable of burning your child.

Remember play times and lunch breaks if your child is at school/nursery. Give children a hat to wear, and if they can’t apply sunscreen at school, cover their exposed skin before they go – you can buy all day sunscreen.

Ten tips for protecting children in the sun 1) Set good habits for the future

3) Use shade Keep babies in complete shade: under trees, umbrellas, canopies or indoors. Provide shade for prams and buggies if possible.

4) Cover them up When outdoors, protect a baby’s skin with loose fitting clothes, and a wide brimmed hat that shades their face, neck and ears.

5) Wear sunglasses Buy good quality, wraparound sunglasses for children, as soon as they can wear them. Sunglasses don’t have to be expensive brands.

6) Find hats they like Encourage children to wear hats with brims, especially if they are not wearing sunglasses. The wider the brim, the more skin will be shaded from the sun.

10) Keep them hydrated Always have drinks available for children on sunny days. Avoid fizzy drinks and offer clear fluids such as water. Homemade frozen ice lollies are refreshing and can be offered alongside drinks to keep hydrated.

work

From CBeebies to CV’s Selling your skills as a parent to get back in business...

B

ecoming a parent is, let’s face it, a full time job. It’s a career change for many of us which involves a whole new set of skills and expertise and probably not one we were expecting to have made such an impact on our lives. But what happens when its time to go back to work? How many of you reading this are thinking they would like to return to work but don’t think they have the skills or qualifications employers are looking for? Well think again, you probably don’t realise that as a parent you have a vast range of skills which you can use to create your CV and sell yourself to employers.

What are your core skills? Inge Dowdon from Polyglot Coaching in Bristol explains “Employers value a wide range of skills from anyone, regardless of whether they are parents or not. Things like: engagement, enthusiasm, commitment to the job and the company, taking initiative, being flexible, good team players and much more. These are core skills that are within everybody, regardless of education or experience. Good employers know that they can teach people practical skills (such as computer skills and how to use the switchboard), whereas these core skills are more difficult to teach.”

You’re worth it! “As a parent returning to work it is important that you value yourself. Remember, you have an education, you have previous work experience and even if you don’t you still have many of the important skills valued by employers such as flexibility, initiative, multi-tasking and being a team player, all gained from being a parent.”

Writing your CV It may have been many years since you have written a CV and it’s a daunting task but it’s an important part of getting your dream job. Marie Taylor a mum and lifecoach from Stoke Gifford suggests “Getting a new 10 • Handprints Magazine • July 2009 Handprints 0709 Issue 4 AW.indd 10

perspective on yourself and restoring your self-esteem is especially important if you’re thinking about going back to work.” So, here are a few tips on how you can demonstrate some of those valued skills which you have gained as a parent: Organisation skills: Think about what you achieve during a week… providing a varied programme of things to do for the whole familiy, preparing meals, ensuring the whole family is out of the house on time, looking presentable, managing a diary of appointments for everyone and lets not forget managing the family budget. When you think of it that way it’s not so difficult to say (and mean it) “I have excellent organisational skills and am able to effectively demonstrate excellent time management and prioritisation skills” Attention to detail: To run the household successfully there needs to be a certain level of ‘stock’ items in the house. If you’re at home it’s you who makes sure that there is just enough of everything to feed, clothe and ‘oil the workings’ of the house while other people use all the stock and don’t tell you that, ‘that was the last nappy in the drawer’, ‘we just used all the loo roll to dress Freddie up as an Egyptian Mummy’ etc. So, you can demonstrate “An eye for detail and experience of stock management within a household budget” Creativity: How many times have you had to turn your hand to making costumes for school plays, designing scenery, making posters, setting up stalls for school fetes? Have you had to come up with ideas for fundraising? Think of those rainy days when you have had to invent a new game to keep bored and energetic children amused and all this on a budget of pennies rather than pounds. You could say then that “I am creative and innovative with an ability to create resources from a limited budget”

work

What other parents say… “Some of the skills I use in my job include multitasking; being organised, reasoning, thinking of solutions, patience and forward thinking, not only that but I have also gained a whole new network of clients through working with the pre-school community.” Kellie, Full time Mum of 2 and Utility Warehouse distributor

“Organisation, multi-tasking,creativity and most importantly the ability to make decisions and stick to them” Richard, Full Time dad of 2 and part time architectural technician

Multi-Tasking: As a parent you are expected to juggle many balls and work in different capacities within your family – empathetic listener, care giver, entertainer, organiser, financial manager and lets not forget cook, cleaner and chief bottle washer – these are just a few of the roles. Many of these are carried out simultaneously so multi tasking comes naturally – think… cooking tea whilst helping with homework or ironing a pile of washing while watching one child in the garden and keeping another child entertained with painting a picture of Grandma... these are great examples of “my ability to multi task on a daily basis utilising a variety of skills to meet the needs of others.” These are just a few examples of skills you can demonstrate – we are sure you can think of many more. Finally Inge from Polygot Coaching suggests her top 3 tips to sell yourself to an employer are: 1. Be confident and believe in yourself 2. Tell them “what’s in it for them” i.e. what are the benefits of hiring YOU and your skills, experience and enthusiasm. 3. Don’t give up - there is no failure, only feedback find out what you can improve upon and then do that.

Hannah Jack

Body Shop at Home Area Manager explains why they value working Mums in their organisation... What advice would you give to a mum thinking about getting back into the workplace? Try and go for a role that has a degree of flexibility and that you can work around your families requirements. The role of Consultant with Body Shop at Home gives you total control over when you work and how often. What skills and training do you get from The Body Shop at Home? Initially you attend a new starter training day which gives you all the skills to enable you to run your first party with confidence. Advanced training in make-up, skincare and pampering are offered monthly to anyone who is interested in learning additional skills free of charge. As a consultant you boost your self esteem, confidence and learn new business skills. What are the most important qualities for a Body Shop at Home party Consultant? No previous experience is required to become a consultant, you just need to be willing to work with our gorgeous products. What skills do you think mums have that are valued by employers? Many Mums have fantastic skills to offer employers, which are often overlooked as Mums with young children are often seen as unreliable employees. The Body Shop at Home embrace many of these skills that Mums use at home with their children on a daily basis.

Bristol City Yoga

A tranquil escape from everyday life for parents and parents to be… What is Bristol City Yoga? Bristol City Yoga is a yoga centre just off Stokes Croft offering a full timetable of yoga classes and therapies. The centre is a tranquil, peaceful space for our clients to escape the pressures of everyday life.

Focus on... Baby Massage at BCY Louise Morgan offers therapies from Bristol City Yoga

What do you offer for parents and parents to be? Parents, babies and children form a crucial part of our work. We run weekly specialist pregnancy yoga classes to help mothers maintain strength and fitness during pregnancy in preparation for motherhood. Mum-baby yoga classes are also held weekly and our popular Family Yoga class runs once a month on a Sunday.

What do you do? I’m a complementary therapist who also offers baby massage to parents.

Where can parents find you?

We also run Kindermusik classes for babies and toddlers and Baby Massage classes.

I offer group courses at Bristol City Yoga and the Therapy Centre, Church Road Redfield as well as home groups.

Can you help prepare for childbirth?

How can baby massage benefit new mums?

Absolutely! One of our most popular events are the Birth Rehearsal days for expectant parents. These are unique one-off sessions to prepare women and birth partners for labour. You will be guided through an improvised “birth”, learning practical tools for each stage of the labour.

It’s great for bonding with babies, providing a special time for baby & parent that they can incorporate into their routine. Some dads also attend, as they enjoy learning something that gives them time with their baby. It also has lots of health benefits for the baby.

Pregnancy Yoga and our Birth rehearsals are fabulous way to connect with your body and unborn child. We also have close contact with breastfeeding peer supporters and a network of mothers throughout Bristol to help with the normal anxieties and worries of those first few months.

Tell us more about your group courses?

Do you need to sign up for a course or do you do one off workshops? You can do one-off classes and pay as you go, or sign up for regular classes. It’s totally up to you.

How can parents find out more? email to info@bristolcityyoga.co.uk. You can also call the studio on 0117 924 4414 or check our website www.bristolcityyoga.co.uk for information on our timetable and upcoming workshops.

In our small group courses we cover different topics each week: what oils & lotions to use for a massage, the songs you can sing, common health complaints eg wind and constipation and how to safely use aromatherapy oils with your baby. You get the chance to chat with the other parents.

How can parents contact you? By mobile, 07779 234144, email, contact@louise-morgan.co.uk, or by visiting my website www.louise-morgan.co.uk. (If they’re interested in booking on a Bristol City Yoga group they can contact them directly on 0117 924 4414).

n multicultural Bristol you’re bound to have met at least one family with children raised in homes where more than one language is spoken. Maybe you’ve come across a languagebased baby group or your child’s pre-school offers French activities. From singing in Spanish to storytelling using Polish, languages bring the world alive for little ones as a truly an exciting place! Amazingly, babies and toddlers have an inborn ability to learn multiple languages. In fact any exposure to more than one language may give babies an early learning advantage. Babies begin absorbing language basics before they can speak, and they can tell the difference between sounds. So the earlier your baby hears two languages, the easier it is to grasp them.

Nadya Webster tells us more: “As our school is out of conventional hours, we really make it fun! This means that we do lots of crafts and games rather than formal lessons. In the younger classes for 3 to 5 year olds our aim is to build up a child’s vocabulary whereas in the older classes, we start with reading, writing and more complicated sentence structures.” “I grew up bilingually and my brother and I were the only children we knew who spoke a foreign language at home. My daughters go along to the Saturday school and, unlike my brother and I, have lots of friends who speak German at home. Many children reject their second language because they just want to fit in. Well at the German Saturday School they all fit in and feel normal for a change!” Nadya adds: “From my experience, as long as you are consistent, a child can communicate in several languages. People forget how amazing children’s brains are!”

Drawing is fun in any language: children at the German Saturday School

At the German-speaking playgroup based in Cotham, Bristol you will also find plenty of activities for toddlers and pre-school children to enjoy – from dressing up to singing, riding bikes and of course lots of toys. German festivals such as St Martin’s Day and Karnival are celebrated and at Christmas, Santa Claus (Sankt Nikolaus) visits the group.

“Czesc!” ´´ At the Polish Saturday School you will meet children as young as four engaged in singing and rhyme play. Mrs Kuczcinska, the Head Teacher says: “A child absorbs language quickly and has fewer inhibitions about learning. Playgroups and language schools are a great way to continue customs and traditions too; every nationality should know their roots. A lot of our children do come from Polish-speaking homes but there are also some from English backgrounds – we would never turn anyone away.”

“An ideal age to learn a second language is when toddlers start to communicate effectively, from 2-3 years of age. Introducing them to another language early on should help them develop cultural skills, give them a head start in future language ability, and ensure good global awareness.” Joanne Edge, Mum & French Teacher Contact Joanne on 07521 082587 for more information about learning French with your child in a fun, relaxed environment.

“Bal Vihar” Multicultural learning can even be used to teach children values such as kindness to others. Bal Vihar, which translates from Indian as ‘a place for children’, are classes taught in English for children of all nationalities. Each session uses mythological stories, Indian epics and songs with plenty of singing and a few prayers too. “We have a special alphabet, such as A for ambition, L for love and P for patience,” explains Soumya Dinesh. “The folk tales convey excellent morals and it’s easy for all the children to follow them.”

Helping your child learn a new language There are many language classes and groups for young children with some offering classes for those as young as 10 months old. 16 • Handprints Magazine • July 2009 Handprints 0709 Issue 4 AW.indd 16

I f neither you nor your partner is fluent in the second language your child is learning it shouldn’t be a problem but understanding a little will help your child. l Sing nursery rhymes to your child in both languages as these are usually sung to the same tunes around the world. l Play a language tape in the car on a long journey and encourage all the family to join in. l Buy DVDs in different languages – these are easily obtained from the internet. l Pop into your local library. There are now many books written in dual languages and some libraries offer children’s reading sessions in different languages. l

Puddle Ducks Bristol going swimmingly... Puddle Ducks baby and toddler swim school is set to expand this Autumn thanks to a trio of new teachers who are now fully trained and raring to go. Sarah Peacock who launched Puddle Ducks in Bristol and Bath last year said, “I am totally thrilled to have three new amazing teachers trained and ready to go.” Jodie was one of Puddle Ducks’ very first customers when she started swimming with her baby Archie in September 2008. “I started taking Archie to classes when he was seven weeks old and he just loved it!” Tina and Sarah were both fully trained swimming teachers before they decided to join Puddle Ducks, and both have three children. Tina said, “I absolutely love the water and feel that every child should be introduced to swimming as early as possible.“ Sarah said, “There is something very special about the Puddle Ducks classes. There is no pressure, just warm, friendly classes that encourage children and their parents to enjoy the water.”

Teaching baby and toddler swimming classes can be a fantastic career choice for Mums and Dads, as it’s part-time and term-time only. Sarah Peacock said, “We are always on the look-out for new teachers so if you would like to find out more, get in touch. You don’t have to be an Olympic swimmer but you will enjoy swimming and absolutely love children! We are also looking for Poolside Assistants to support our new teachers and take care of our customers. No qualifications are necessary you just need to be happy, helpful and hard working.”

To find out more about our classes or if you are interested in working for Puddle Ducks visit our website at www.puddleducks.com or call Sarah on 0117 9717165.

We believe that every child is multitalented. Our sessions use children’s imagination, unlimited creative talents and natural ability to play. By using children’s natural inclination to movement and involving them in musical games we stimulate their mind and aim to develop an emotional link to music, gain a basic practical knowledge of music theory and develop sensitivity to sound. Our Rythmics sessions at Bristol Music School are popular with older children and we are very excited to now be able to offer Rythmics for pre-school children. In a Rythmics session we explore rhythm feeling, listening and aural skills, emotional sensitivity, group co-operation and aim to give children the confidence to perform in front of other children all in a fun relaxed environment.

Taking a new path as a Full Time Dad

T

here are certain stages in your life when you find yourself diverted off the fast lane of your career path and end up in the greasy spoon at the side of the road. Until recently I was sat in that greasy spoon, drinking bottomless cups of coffee, watching the careers of others speed past me, you see I was made redundant in February this year and as I work in construction it is very hard to find employment at the moment. Over that past few months things have been hard at home, trying to juggle the kids, searching for a job and helping Lucy with her 3 businesses (Yes I did say 3!). We have come to the decision that she will now work full time whilst I stay at home and become... A House Husband! Honestly, If this was mentioned 8-9 months ago I would have shivered at the idea, but now I’m quite looking forward to it, getting up when the kids do and not with an alarm. The short drive on the school run, without the traffic and not worrying about that accident on the way home which is causing a 3 hour delay! So now I have left that greasy spoon, got into my MPV complete with car-seats and I’m heading off the slip road into the unknown... The road trip as a Full Time Dad begins.

It’s more than just becoming water-confident. It’s about nurturing your child’s natural love of water. Join at any age, from birth. Tel 0117 971 7165 Email bristolandbath@puddleducks.com

Stan loves Little Kickers because there’s lots of games and challenges, loads and loads of praise and encouragement, different games each week and loads of opportunities to score goals – lots of girls play too!

Grimsbury Farm, kingswood (behind Tennis Court Pub) – I mostly love it because its FREE! but the kids love it because there are a wide variety of animals, all of whom seem to love being stroked and fed (only with the farmers consent) There’s loads of space for the kids to run about and explore on their own, all the while still being in view. We regularly take a picnic and relax for an hour or two.

Make Chatter Matter this Summer with Debutots! Debutots Early Years Drama will be hosting a programme of holiday workshops and parties in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. At each event, we will be helping to ‘Make Chatter Matter’ by holding our own Chatterbox Challenge in aid of ICAN the children’s communication charity. At Debutots we are proud to support ICAN’s Make Chatter Matter Campaign, which highlights the importance of communication as the foundation for learning and social development – something we’re very passionate about. So, this summer not only are we launching our exciting and fun holiday workshops and parties but we will also be raising money and spreading the word about ICAN and the amazing work they do. We will be hosting Debutots Summer Drama Parties for children aged 3 – 7 at venues in Bradley Stoke, Thornbury and Henleaze. Our parties are guaranteed to be an unforgettable treat with the chance to dress up and meet characters such as Fairy Fuddle, Pirate Scallywag and Safari Sue! We will also be holding our popular Holiday Workshops with family classes for 2 – 7 year olds and drop off sessions for 4 – 7 year olds. Children will delight as they take part in interactive storytelling and marvel as they leap into the story world bringing it to life with their own actions, words and sounds! They’ll also have the chance to put pen (and glue and sparkly bits!) to paper as they take part in a craft activity based on the workshop theme. No need to sign up for a term or pay a registration fee – but booking is essential.

For further information contact lucy on 01454 612063 or email lucy@debutots.co.uk

Chatter Really Matters The children’s communication charity I CAN estimates that about 10% of children in the UK have speech, language and communication needs, either as their primary disability or as part of another condition such as autism, dyslexia or cerebral palsy. Debutots is actively involved in I CAN’s three year awareness campaign called Make Chatter Matter, which aims to ensure that speech, language and communication are embedded at the heart of children’s policy. The campaign, principally supported by the BT Better World campaign and Openreach, highlights the importance of communication as the foundation for learning and social development. Summer Playtime – Great ideas for the beach and garden We might be in 2009 but kids are still kids! While computer games are great in their place don’t forget the tried and tested toys and games. Hours of fun and entertainment can be had from something as simple as an egg and spoon race (for older kids beef it up with an obstacle course). If you don’t want the mess of broken eggs, sets are available with wooden eggs. Quoits is another old favourite – great for on the beach, in the garden or even in the house. All ages can play – just adjust the throw line to even things out. Boomerangs are a great portable toy (there’s even foam versions available for indoor use), and why not update your beach ball with an inflatable globe – kid’s can brush up on their geography while playing catch! If the weather’s not so good or you want something less strenuous, solitaire and shut the box are great traditional games and really encourage forward planning. Don’t forget the enjoyment and satisfaction that can be had from completing a humble jigsaw – just remember to leave them to it and resist putting in those last few pieces just because you know where they go!

All of the above mentioned toys (and lots more!) are available on-line from www.giftedoriginals.co.uk – don’t forget to quote your code ‘Hand10’ to get your 10% discount. 28 • Handprints Magazine • July 2009 Handprints 0709 Issue 4 AW.indd 28
