his may be the first time you have heard of Handprints Magazine so we thought we would tell you a little bit about us…
We are Lucy and Lisa. We met for the first time just over three years ago when we went to a local Parent and Toddler Group called Handprints, where we were made to feel welcome and were able to meet other parents and carers and relax for a couple of hours with good company, a cuppa and great cake. As new Mums we found that although there were plenty of things to do for new mums and children it was mostly through word of mouth or by chance that you would find out about them, and once you did, you needed the confidence to go and try them alone which is never easy. So here we are three years later with growing families and even more challenges along the way…. We had an idea to produce a truly local guide jam packed with information, resources, hints and advice for parents and carers of pre-school children. From this idea we began our first edition of Handprints
Magazine in North Bristol and now one year after we launched that first magazine we thought it was time we reached out to South Bristol and the surrounding towns and villages. Handprints Magazine is what we like to call “A guide to life with under 5’s” – we try to find out about the things you want to know as parents. We also have a great new website www. handprintsmagazine.co.uk where you can read back copies of Handprints Magazine aswell as meet new friends, publicise events and much more. In this first edition for South Bristol we bring to you money off vouchers and discounts from 123 Jump, Petal Portraits and many more. We also have some fabulous prizes and tickets for lucky readers from local activities and businesses. We hope you enjoy your first magazine and we will be back in the New Year with another edition for you. Merry christmas and Happy new Year!

Top Tips for Tiny Teeth Fai Pope, Student Health Visitor
T
his Christmas children of all ages will be given some sweets or chocolate. Our local health visitor has given us some tips for a smashing smile in the new year.
Good habits start young Try to introduce a soft toothbrush before any teeth have appeared. As soon as your child’s first teeth appear you can begin to use a very small amount of fluoride toothpaste. For babies, smear the brush with toothpaste and aim to be using about a pea-sized amount of toothpaste by the time your child reaches 3 years. Ask your Health Visitor for a dental pack at your baby’s 9-12 month review.
Brush Twice a Day Once teeth have appeared they should be cleaned twice a day. Use gentle circular movements and clean every tooth thoroughly. This can be quite difficult at first but try not to turn it into a battle, make it a fun activity for all the family, give lots of praise and encouragement, and let them learn by watching you clean your teeth.

4 Encourage savoury foods for snacks give them raw fruits and vegetables 4 Give sweet foods and diluted fruit juices at mealtimes and always in a cup 4 Babies should only be given water or milk in a bottle, never juice 4 Aim for all other drinks between meals to be water or milk (not flavoured) 4 Use alternatives to sweets and chocolates as treats try stickers, hair slides or crayons instead. Try to get grandparents involved in this one too! 4 If your child is unwell ask your GP or Pharmacist for Sugar Free medicine 4 If your child does have sweets aim to have them at the end of mealtimes and it is better if they are all eaten at once

Almost 2 years after setting up her own business, Mmm Bopp Music and Movement, Kelly’s classes are causing quite a buzz with local mums and their children. Singing about a different subject each week keeps the children – and grownups – engaged. It’s a 45 minute all-action creative music and movement session. With the use of lots of props and educational resources the children’s imagaination and confidence will develop and thrive. The classes also improve coordination and other important motor skills. Other benefits include developing listening skills and the understanding of rhythm and beat. Lets not forget social skills too and having loads and loads of fun. The classes have already proved to be popular in South Bristol and have expanded to several venues. Kelly has also been running classes at the popular softplay venue, Playspace. Feedback has shown that the Mums that attend these particular classes love the fact thay they get an exclusive deal; the Mmm Bopp class plus unlimited stay and play afterwards. That way, Mum can enjoy a coffee and the children can continue to have fun! Some of the great comments about Kelly’s classes include: ●
Really interesting for the children. Much better than any other group
●
A great mix of old, familiar songs and original ones
● ●
●
It’s fun and different to the norm We like having a theme to follow and bring things from home to take part It’s good to have themes and the children are learning without realising

new Year, new start… take a look at your family finances in 2010
f
uture financial Planning can be hard sometimes with young children and toddlers to care for, I know, I have done it.
Sometimes it is a matter of getting through the day to day responsibilities of parenting, but it is also a good time to consider your future financial plans at this time. To plan for your children’s and your families future financial security. Tax efficient savings for your child’s future could be a priority for you or grandparents now. Did you know that in addition to your chid trust fund voucher, available from the government, you can contribute an additional £1200 per year to your child’s trust fund, which will grow tax free? You could use your ISA allowance to save long term and tax free for further education, or a deposit on their first home. A change enabling millions of savers aged over 50 to increase the amount deposited in a tax-free Individual Savings Account (ISA) has come in. The amount people can save in an ISA has now risen from £7,200 to £10,200. The new limit is for anyone born on or before 5 April 1960. For everyone else, the limit will rise from 6 April 2010. Why not think really long term and start a stakeholder pension plan for your child now. You could save up to £2,880 per year into a pension plan and the government will make this up to £3,600 with tax relief. None of us likes to think about it, but now is the most important time to consider how you and your family are protected in the event of the untimely death or illness of either parent and the death of both parents must not be overlooked.
Are our wills up to date? If one partner is going back to work part time, it may be worth checking with your HR department if any death benefits from work are affected. Consulting an Independent Financial Adviser at this important time can help you get the best value, most affordable insurances, and more importantly the most relevant policy for your family circumstances. Ask yourself how would my spouse cope if I wasn’t here? futurefinancial offer an initial consultation free of charge to see if we can help with your family and children’s future financial plans. Whilst your children are young, it is an excellent time for a free financial review.

dad’s page
Dads! – Hands up who likes soft play!
A
s a new ‘Self-employed’ dad, my first stop on my road trip worries me at first. I am directed to a non-descript warehouse in the middle of an industrial estate. “What here?”, “yes, dad!” is the reply, Not a good start! However I am soon comforted by all the other MPVs in the car park with “Dad’s Taxis” and “Little Princess on Board” stickers on the windows, and a dusting of crisps throughout the interior.
I walk into reception, pay my entrance fee and then they take the children’s shoes (is this to keep us captive?) and I walk in. WOW! What used to be a centre for industry is now fully carpeted and full of inflatable castles, slides and other structures that would not look amiss on the Krypton Factor’s Assault Course! I have heard many mums complain that they don’t have a husband, but a grown up child. If that’s the case then soft play is fantastic as you can kick off your shoes and become 8 again, with the excuse that you’re with your child! Lots of soft play centres have the same format, a play area and a café where you can get a coffee and the kids can get another hit of sugar to keep them going…. Now I have to try and calm them down, get back to the car (after claiming our shoes back) and set off to our next stop… the journey continues…

Debby Kirby was a primary school teacher for ten years before she decided to use her love of music and dance to set up her own Early Years music sessions. The parent and child classes she runs at Saltford Hall proved so popular that she now takes “Rhyme Time” into Nurseries several times a week too so that even more children can experience the fun and learning benefits of music based play.“Over the 8 years I’ve been doing this, I’ve built up a great range of instruments, puppets, and musical books” says Debby who clearly loves her job. “I like to keep the classes small and friendly so that the children get lots of individual attention and it’s not too noisy or scary for very little ones.” Why not come along and join the fun? Woodland House Nursery – New Beginnings for little ones in Clifton Nursery care in the centre of Bristol has been given a welcome boost with the introduction of Woodland House Nursery in Woodland Road, Clifton. Archfield House Nursery Limited has taken over the lease of the former Scallywags nursery and given it a complete overhaul. Nursery head and Director, Rebecca Clevett told us “We leapt at the opportunity to transform the former Scallywags, and have made a substantial investment to re-establish nursery provision at the site which we can now offer to parents across the city.” Archfield House Nursery has an enviable reputation in the city, voted as providing ‘outstanding nursery education’ by Ofsted in 2008. It is with this excellent reputation that they are transforming the Woodland House Nursery and working under the same management styles and ethos. Woodland House Nursery currently has places available for 0-5 year olds. Why not contact them to arrange a time to look around their happy and forward-thinking nursery!

Does your child love stories and imaginary play? Could they help Brand New Bear meet his toy box friends or save the rainforest with Milly Macaw or even make lattes with a cow! Anything is possible in the magical world of stories and at Debutots Early Years Drama we know how to nurture young imaginations so that through creative play, children can make sense of the very big world they live in. Our popular classes are a blend of interactive storytelling and dramatic play designed to fire budding imaginations, build children’s self confidence and help develop their communication skills. We have classes in venues in Bristol for children aged 6 months to 7 years and as the UK’s premier Dramain-Education provider we provide one off and termly sessions for your children’s centre, toddler group, nursery or pre-school or school. In 2009 we launched a brand new Childminder Support Through Story Programme © to meet the needs of the EYFS. Debutots’ also offers a unique party play package where children can adventure with Fairy Fuddle or Pirate Loopy Lulu amongst many others. (As recommended on netmums).
