Welcome to Handprints Magazine
We are Lisa and Lucy and we met for the first time just over two years ago when we went to a local Parent and Toddler Group called Handprints, where we were made to feel welcome and were able to meet other parents and carers and relax for a couple of hours with good company, a cuppa and great cake.
A
s new Mums we found that although there were plenty of things to do for new mums and children it was mostly through word of mouth or by chance that you would find out about them, and once you did, you needed the confidence to go and try them alone which is never easy. So here we are two years later both with growing families and even more challenges along the way…. We had an idea to produce a truly local guide jam packed with information, resources, hints and advice for parents and carers of pre-school children. From this idea came a vision: “We want to increase access to activities, information and resources to new families and we want to produce a local guide that is relevant to our readers and their community.
We want to become a link between local groups, classes, clubs, retailers, small businesses, employers and most importantly our readers” In this edition we have features on weaning, choosing a pre-school, money making and money saving ideas and much more. We know that you are all feeling the pinch right now so our advertisers have offered some great deals and special offers, please support them and let them know you found out about them from Handprints Magazine – we all need to pull together and support our local businesses. In March we will be exhibiting at the Little Monster Baby and Toddler Show and we even have some FREE tickets to the show to give away. We also have the beginnings of what we want to become a truly invaluable directory for parents and carers, if you know of a listing that should be in there contact us because we want to include everybody. Happy reading,
Lucy & Lisa

Weaning
A
few helpful tips around weaning your baby; each baby is individual and you need to be guided by your baby:
• The Department of Health (2006) recommend that babies can be weaned onto solid food at around six months; • Baby rice is good to start weaning with, at a time when your baby is not overly hungry or tired. A few teaspoons initially are recommended. • If your baby will not accept the rice off a spoon, they are probably not ready for weaning just yet • Once your baby can accept the baby rice well, you can introduce fruit purees (e.g. pear, apple etc), then try pureed vegetables, slowly increasing the amount that you offer your baby. • Around 6 ½ months babies can be offered lumpy textures and require sources of iron. This can include offering your baby meat and fish at least once a day. Finger foods should also be offered around this time (e.g cheese, rusks, toast with butter, well cooked egg etc). 4 • Handprints Magazine • February 2009 Handprints 0209 Issue 2 AW.indd 4
New Breastfeeding Group From Friday Feb 27th 2009 there will be a breastfeeding group for new (and experienced) mums in the Little Stoke Sure Start Centre. Contact Debbie Jeffrey on 01454 616843 for more information. The following should be avoided: • Foods that are high in salt, (salt should not be added to foods you are cooking for your baby) • Sugary foods • Honey, as occasionally this contains a bacteria that babies guts are unable to tolerate until 1 year • Nuts and nut products for the first year, (if there is a family history of allergies speak to your health visitor for advice).

Childcare Choices…
T
oday you could quite easily become confused with the childcare choices available - nurseries, play-groups, pre-schools, childminders and nannies – which makes any decision very difficult. We hear terms like EYFS, Sessions, Funding, SEN, Ofsted but do we really know what they mean to us as parents or carers? Handprints Magazine will be taking close look at childcare options in future editions – its something quite close to our hearts. Our first look is at a local pre-school in Winterbourne Down: How many of you can think back to the days of flares, platform heels, no computer games and just 3 channels on your TV? Yes, it’s the 1970’s which was when Linda Edgar began her career with what is now Winterbourne Down Pre School as a Playgroup Helper. 30 years on and now Linda is the manager of the pre-school serving the communities of Winterbourne, Bradley Stoke, Hambrook, Emersons Green and Downend.
“We work in partnership with families to develop each child as an individual. It is important for young children to develop their social skills and we often see that our children build independence and cope well with the move to Big School. We work with local primary schools to encourage this.”
WINTERBOURNE DOWN PRE-SCHOOL • Established charity run, community pre school • Safe, secure & stimulating environment for 2 - 5 year olds • Current Pre School Leader in post for 30 years • OFSTED approved curriculum • All staff NVQ qualified • Individual care & Key Worker for all children • Nursery Education Grants - funding available for all 3 & 4 year olds • Children not required to be toilet trained • Up to 6 sessions per week for 3-5yrs • Half days, Full days & Lunch sessions available • Feeding Primary Schools in Winterbourne, Hambrook, Bradley Stoke, Emersons Green & surrounding areas To discuss your child’s individual needs, contact Linda Edgar, Pre School Leader, on 07891 100467 email winterbournedownpreschool@gmail.com or call in to see us.

Talking to Linda made me realise that although many things may have changed in the past 30 years – new Governments, recessions, computer games, digital TV, CD’s, DVD’s (you know all those things we take for granted.) There is one thing that has remained the same at Winterbourne Down Pre-school – Children love to Play! No matter what Government initiatives or policies are in place Learning Through Play in a safe and secure environment has always been the most important factor for children. So, what does a pre-school offer? Linda explained “Winterbourne Down Pre-School offers children over 6 • Handprints Magazine • February 2009 Handprints 0209 Issue 2 AW.indd 6
the age of 2 daily sessions where they can enjoy the freedom to play explore and investigate. We provide lots of fun and stimulating activities including craft, construction, stories, IT and, very importantly, outdoor play.” “We provide sessions for over 3’s on Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday between 9am and 3pm and are we also able to offer a session on Monday’s for under 3’s between 9.15 – 11.10am.” “When I started working in the pre-school it was called a play-group, this is just one of the things

childcare which have changed over the years. I am proud to say that I am now teaching children whose parents used to attend as children – now that’s a great recommendation!” If you are considering a pre-school for your children you may be surprised to hear that you don’t need to wait until September to enrol “At Winterbourne Down we welcome children the term after they are three, or even two in our Monday sessions.” Just call Linda for a chat and to arrange a visit for more information.
Handprints Magazine Tips and Advice Top 5 tips when looking for childcare: • Allow yourself plenty of time Research all your options • Be prepared with a list of questions that are key to your decision making – for example the opening hours, fees, provision of food etc. • Visit more than one provider • Think about your child’s age and needs and also your own needs – eg: work hours, pick up times, days available • Ask for references Pre-schools often accept children from the age of two, it is important to think about applying for a place early as many are full well in advance. Every three and four year old in England is entitled to a minimum of 12.5 hours of free early learning per week, in nurseries, playgroups, preschools or at their childminders for 38 weeks of the year. This will rise to 15 hours a week from 2010, delivered flexibly over a minimum of three days. There are some great websites which provide help and information when choosing childcare. Try some of these for starters:

money matters
Money’s Too Tight to Mention…
D
id anyone tell you how expensive raising a family can be before you had children – and lets face it did you listen? There is never a right time to start a family and right now we could all do with a few extra pounds in our pockets. So, to help you along we have got some money making and money saving ideas for you…
Money Making
Benefits Check-up You may be entitled to some or all of the Government Benefits available to families. Contact HMRC helpline on 0845 300 3900 or visit www.hmrc.gov.uk for advice. A really useful website is www.entitledto.co.uk where you can do a 5 minute benefit check. Tax Credits You may be entitled to childcare tax credits If you pay for childcare and are a couple both working 16+ hours a week, or a single parent doing the same, and earn under £40,000 in total. Health in Pregnancy Grant After April 6th 2009 you may be entitled to a tax free payout of £190 If you are 25 weeks pregnant. Your doctor or midwife should be able to provide more information.
Boost your income
Recycle old phones If you have old mobile phones lying around the house and they still work you could make some extra cash by selling them to a “old mobile phone buyer”. Check out www.envirophone.co.uk or 10 • Handprints Magazine • February 2009 Handprints 0209 Issue 2 AW.indd 10
www.love2recycle.co.uk or www.mopay.co.uk. You can also send them away to get Supermarket Clubcard points. Sell, sell, sell! The second hand baby goods and toys market is booming! If you have a house full of stuff you don’t use or need why not sell it at local car boot sales, new and used sales or even your own “Garage Sale”. If you are confident using the internet then you could also sell unwanted items on ebay or amazon.
Money Saving
Childcare Vouchers If you pay for Ofsted registered childcare, including summer holiday clubs and after school care you could save £100’s (and sometimes £1000’s) by paying your bill using childcare vouchers. Childcare vouchers are a way for employed parents to pay for childcare out of their income before they are taxed, making you huge savings. If your workplace has such a voucher scheme, you are entitled to purchase up to £243 of childcare with it every month – per working parent. Cut your bills Check you are paying the best prices for your gas, electricity, telephone, broadband and TV. There are

money matters plenty of comparison websites out there willing to help but one of the best impartial guides we have found is on www.moneysavingexpert.com. Shopping You can buy the same food for less by switching to lower priced brands – even if it is just to try them – and make sure you have signed up to store loyalty cards and baby clubs who will send you vouchers, magazines and freebies. Boots Parenting Club, Huggies and Pampers baby clubs are very good. Going Out Look out for special offers, vouchers, holiday deals and 2for1’s if you are planning a special trip or day out. The Invitation Book available through many groups and schools is a really great money saving idea which can save £££’s from the money saving vouchers included and you can swap vouchers you don’t use. Supermarket clubcard points can also be used for day-trips and eating out.

Advice to Daddy - be prepared!
B
e Prepared’ is the Scout motto and when Baden Powell wrote that over 100 years ago he could have easily been writing it for new parents; however I don’t think that all the books or all the advice can really prepare you for this life changing event. From the pregnancy tests (yes I did say tests, we had 4, just to make sure “well it was a faint line!”) to the sleepless nights, your life will never be the same again although I must say IN A GOOD WAY! One of the problems most fathers face during pregnancy is (apart from the food cravings, mood swings and moaning, to name a few!) is feeling detached from the whole process. I know us blokes can feel the kicking and moving (which feels weird, but good) but it is still happening to someone else. However this all changes on the big day. We were whisked to the delivery suite in Southmead and the nerves kicked in, unfortunately I couldn’t get to try
any gas & air to calm me down as it would have been like prising a limpet from a rock! Well after 6hrs in the suite, the pushing started. At one point I did get worried when during mid push I found Lucy’s hand in my pocket looking for something to squeeze, but with some unique body moves I escape the grasp! Anyway, 9hrs after we first entered the suite Charlotte was born and the worry about not being able to connect to her went out the window the first time I laid eyes on her. She was beautiful. The midwife asked me to dress her and I was all thumbs. She was so small & perfect I was petrified I was going to hurt her. Well, needless to say she survived unscathed and now terrorises us and her 6 month old brother with “Mickey Mouse” and “Super Why”! Believe me all the sleepless nights and the crying is all worth it for those times she grabs hold of me for protection when she’s scared or when she’s says “love you Dad”. Rich, Dad to Charlotte (2) and Thomas (6 months)

Coombe Mill – A Children’s Paradise If you feel you and the family need a break away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life, somewhere with unrivalled freedom and all the magic of the outdoors for young children, then a holiday at Coombe Mill could be perfect for you. Thirty acres of mature gardens, copses, secret paths and lakes provide a stunning backdrop to a small private hamlet of picturesque cottages and riverside lodges. The highlight for many children each morning is the daily tractor ride to feed the animals. In springtime, the babies include scampering lambs, friendly goats and their tiny tottering kids, unsteady deer calves as well as chicks, duckling and rabbits. Privately owned and personally run, Coombe Mill is a haven for families, very many of whom return year after year. With six young children of their own, Nick and Fiona understand their needs only too well and work hard to provide everything young families might require. So, if its groceries or home cooking that are required, these can be pre-ordered and delivered to your accommodation. Cots, highchairs, stairgates, fireguards, baby listeners, baby carriers, games, books, fishing rods... Whatever’s needed – even wellies are all available together with Nick and Fiona’s friendly welcome. The perfect ingredients of a memorable family break.

Meet the New Handprints Team in Bradley Stoke and Little Stoke
W
e are Michelle and Becky, two local mums with young families who met 3 yrs ago through antenatal classes and who are now firm friends who have been able to support each other through the ups and downs of motherhood.
Chatting to other parents has made us appreciate that without that support during such a crucial time our lives might well have been very different, perhaps we’d have experienced loneliness, isolation, depression, or just plain old boredom! When we were given the opportunity to open our own Handprints Baby and Toddler group in our own community we decided to take on the challenge. We are now looking forward to meeting a whole new group of parents, carers & children in Bradley Stoke and Little Stoke. Our aim is to provide welcoming support to any parent/carer and child, in an environment that is always inviting and enjoyable. We especially want to reach out to anyone that may feel a little nervous/ alone or apprehensive (for whatever reason) at joining a new group. So come along and say hello, we can’t wait to meet you!
Handprints is run on a drop-in basis, no upfront fees, no waiting lists, we charge £2.80 per adult, children are free! The tea, coffee and juice are free, The cakes are homemade and delicious and all are available throughout the whole session.

iny Tearawayz is a soft play centre located in the Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Knowle, Bristol. It provides a fun and active soft play environment for children, with separate play areas for toddlers and juniors.

Nannies and Childcare Nannies and Childcare is the agency that aims to take away the stress of finding the right childcare for your family. The agency is the brainchild of Monica Worsley, a Bishopston mum of four daughters. Monica has over 18 years of hands-on childcare experience, having worked as a nanny and in child protection as a social worker. “I started the agency because I knew first hand how hard it can be to find the right childcare,” she explains. “At the same time, I knew I had the expertise and experience to provide a really good service. Our goal is to find families the right person in the shortest space of time, the least hassle and not breaking the bank for families.” The agency has a thorough selection process “We also look at experience, maturity, current situation, future direction and personality”, says Monica. ”We only accept candidates that meet all our criteria and achieve the highest standards.” Currently we have over 200 nannies registered with us. The agency provides nannies, maternity nurses, babysitters and after-school nannies. We are specialists in Au pairs and are members of IAPA (International Au Pair Association). Fees are significantly lower than most agencies, with free registration for both families and childcarers. Whatever your needs in childcare are, we can help you!

Where will your imagination take you today...?
I
f you were to see the world through the eyes of young child, then chances are your answer would be: everywhere!
At Debutots Early Years Drama we know how important it is to nurture young imaginations so that through productive creative play, very little children can make sense of the very big world they live in. Our classes are a unique blend of interactive storytelling and dramatic play designed to fire budding imaginations, build children’s self-confidence and help develop their communication skills. An original story is told each week and then one of our skilled Debutots practitioners will facilitate a creative group retelling as we all explore the story vocally and physically together. Our action-packed sessions have been expertly developed to suit children aged from as young as 6 months up to 7 years, and are loved by adults and little ones alike. In Bristol, we run sessions for toddler groups, schools and nurseries on a weekly or ad hoc basis, and
our classes fully support the EYFS and KS1 curricula. Popular local parent and child classes are currently held in Bradley Stoke and Henleaze on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. And… if you think your own Drama King or Queen would enjoy an adventure through the jungle with Safari Sue, or sailing the seven seas with Pirate Scallywag or even the chance to help dear old Fairy Fuddle get out of a muddle, then contact Debutots to book one of our unforgettable themed birthday parties. So, today, where will your imagination take you...? Well, at Debutots we’d say that’s not a buggy you’re pushing, it’s a magic carpet! So now it’s down to you and your little ones to take it from there...!
For further details on Debutots classes and birthday parties please contact Lucy on 01454 612063 or email lucy@debutots.co.uk
