OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS you. You have probably heard of the Lions Club, the biggest service organisation in the world. They are inviting you to go along and find out more about who they are and what they do. The Lions have been in existence in Adur for over 50 years and has raised thousands of pounds for national and international causes. However, much of their time is spent helping those 2 INSIDE 0309.indd 2
around us with small things that can make an enormous difference to their lives. Perhaps driving elderly people to a Christmas dinner or a coach trip out with a cream tea, donating money for dressing up clothes to a local playgroup or providing a stair gate to a needy parent Aside from fund raising they also enjoy a good social scene with various activities ranging from quizzes, theatre
trips, skittles and wine tasting to learning to play croquet, a surprisingly fun evening for all who took part. Fund raising can also be fun: they run a Greyhound Charity night once a year and have run the Transport Fayre at Buckingham Park, Shoreham for the last 32 years. Both of these require a lot of organising but are also enjoyable for all involved. Adur East Lions are hoping that some more local people who may have an hour or so to spare every couple of weeks could help them to make a difference to our local community. If you would like to get involved do give them a call. They welcome new faces, whatever age you are and even if you only have a little time to spare Go along and see what they have to offer. You might enjoy being a Lion and find it a rewarding experience. They will be holding an informal information evening (with nibbles) in the Function Room at the Royal George Pub, Upper Shoreham Road (opp. Tescos, Holmbush). To find out more, in a relaxed atmosphere, please contact any of the Lion members below or email for further information to: membership@adureastlions.org.uk
Please telephone Lion Chris Hilliard 01273 885186, Lion John Taylor 01273 887339 or Lion Val Roberts 01903 751259 to let them know you are coming along. YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN THEM ON FRIDAY 27TH MARCH at the Royal George 7pm. Adur East Lions Club Charity Trust is a Registered Charity No.1081845. To advertise call: 01273 452065 20/2/09 12:44:40

Unfortuantely for the cast, Monte is not a very good songwriter, and they are not very good singers! Only dire necessity is able to persuade a doubtful cast and crew to stage his dreadful show. Performances start at 7.30pm. Ticket Prices £9.00, special deal for the Wednesday show, £7.00. lIGN-DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC (Southwick) has just purchased the latest in Japanese massage chairs. Patients can now wait for their Chiropractic treatments while having a relaxing full-body massage. Dr Paula Moore, Principal Chiropractor at ALIGN says, “I am always looking for ways to add value to the experience of our clinic. INADA believe that the world can benefit from the traditions of Japanese medicine that emphasizes preventive healthcare and the importance of massage in maintaining well-being. The INADA massage chair is amazing. I believe that the massage chairs along with the powerful Chiropractic adjustment can be a integral part of everyone’s health care regime.” ALIGN opened it’s doors in 2005 in the comfortable neighbourhood of Southwick. Paula added, “We are community chiropractors who go to extraordinary lengths to delight our customers, many of whom travel great distances (London, Surrey, New York) to experience our friendly passion for natural health.” If you are interested in finding out more about the 14% of the population that benefit from Chiropractic’s natural approach to family health, then mention this article to receive a 50% off the price of an initial consultation.

AFTER A VERY difficult assessment with Wilson’s breeder it was decided that Wilson be put down. The breeder assessed his fear aggression. Because I have known how to handle Wilson and avoid most trouble, his aggression was only a small part of his behaviour. The breeder was very concerned with the unpredictability of his behaviour (considering the years of professional treatment he already had for his problems) and felt there was a serious risk to someone else and so re-homing was not an option. The three of us (me and the breeders) cried as I stayed with Wilson until his last moment. It was the hardest decision I have ever had to make. I wrote Wilson a goodbye:
Dear Sweet Wilson My dear sweet Wilson you came into my life that morning not so long ago. There you were so black and small and perfect in your concrete row. I took you home; you sat upon my lap-a lifetime for us two. I loved you then, as I love you now, my dear sweet Wilson where are you? I look into the empty room, your hair still clumped upon the floo,r if I close my eyes I see you there, and hear your sigh once more. Your smell it lingers in the air and fills the quiet void. I miss my boy, my perfect black boy, dear sweet Wilson where are you? I have never known a love so true, you were everything to me. I shared my secrets, my troubles, and my laughter too. And always that face, that gorgeous face-please dear sweet Wilson where are you? I long to touch you, my boy, my one; nothing ever felt so sweet, you left so soon our time not yet done, so much for us to do. So now sweet Wilson let your soul be free there is no more fear for you. Run through the fields, swim one last time, please always remember me. I will never forget my dear sweet Wilson, a friend, a lesson, a perfect love. You came to me for three short years and now I know I must stop the tears. So I say goodbye to you my boy, you taught me how to love and that I did more than ever before. I promise you I will love some more… my dear sweet Wilson, my dear sweet Wilson, only you will ever know. Goodbye my Wilson, until we meet again…

Memories of Woolworths, part two l
AST MONTH, I featured the memories of my mother Joan Upton’s time working at the Shoreham branch of Woolworths. In those years, from the mid 1940s to mid 1960s Woolworths was a department store, divided into thirty odd departments with eighteen tills. Although Shoreham Woolworth had departments with a numbering system up to 36, not every number was used. Department 1 was ‘Sweets and Confectionery’. It was against a sidewall near the front of the shop and my Nan Ethel Peake worked part-time on this counter for 19 years until 1967. In those days the sweets were all sold loose in those days apart from boxes of chocolates which would have special gift wrappers slipped over them for occasions like Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s. In front of the sweets counter was department 2, the ice-cream freezer, with brands like Polar Maid. You could buy rounds of ice cream that would be unwrapped from paper and put in a cone, or a square served between wafers. A member of staff served you the ice cream. Self-service was not yet popular. Department 3 was ‘Groceries’, mostly cans and packets. Department 4 was jewellery. This was only a small department on the end of the toiletries counter. Department 5 was ‘Biscuits’, sold loose and weighed out into paper bags. There were no 6, 7 or 8, the next number to have a department was 9, selling ‘Ribbons and Lace’. These were measured out for the customer.
12 INSIDE 0309.indd 12
Department 11 consisted of ‘Boot Goods’ which meant shoe polishes, laces and plimsolls. The polishes, shoe brushes etc were displayed in trays of black felt which had to be brushed and laid out every day. Handkerchiefs, in the days before the popularity of tissues had a department to themselves, number 13. Dressmaking and knitting items such as wools, cottons, needles made up department 15, ‘Haberdashery’. This had a large island counter in the centre of the store that it shared with the ‘Ribbons and Lace’, and also (department 17) ‘Hosiery’, and 18 ‘Drapery’. Drapery included clothing such as underwear and vests, plus it sold ‘contact’ the self-adhesive plastic shelf covering, which would be sold in measured off lengths. This central counter had three tills. Department 19, was Christmas and Valentine’s cards, calendars etc, with 20 and 21 selling stationery and books. ‘Toiletries’, department 22, was another large island counter, this time towards the front of the store. It was the biggest department in Woolworths, and sold cosmetics and toiletries such as Ponds Creams, ‘Bourgois’ rouge, ‘Evening In Paris’ and ‘Californian Poppy’ perfumes. The ‘Fancy Goods’ in department 23, were more or less anything not covered by the other departments. When the store started selling records they were to be found here. Department 25 sold paints and polishes, including soap powders, and at the back of the shop the overhead lights and fittings of the electrical department (26) made an impressive display of colour and light. With so many lamps plugged in, this department was a permanent fixture at the back of the store because it needed to many electrical sockets and wiring to ever be moved. Nails were weighed out loose by the half pound at department 28 ‘Hardware’, and screws were counted out. Department 29 contained Christmas decorations, including the concertina type which would hang across the department, above the customers heads in an attractive display. The Toy Department (30) was much smaller than it is today, apart from at Christmas time. It was the place to buy things like pots of bubbles or rotating pin mills. A horticultural section (32) had plants displayed in wooden boxes. These would then be dug out and wrapped in newspaper to be sold. The wooden boxes were not sold and went back to the nursery to be refilled. The plants were grown locally, and many came from the Riverside Nursery, which was on the site of Frosts Garage in Old Shoreham Road, stretching over the area now occupied by Orchard Close. The horticultural department also sold packets of seeds for 4d or 8d. The 8d ones tended to be the vegetables such as runner beans. Growing your own vegetables was of course especially popular in the war years and just after. Department 33 was ‘Tin ware’ including saucepans and baking tins, while department 34 was ‘Household’ goods, which included things like toilet rolls. The final two departments of china and glassware were quite small, and the goods arrived in crates. When self-service shopping became the new trend, Woolworths of course changed to reflect the times. Less staff and less tills, the creation of a record department, and the shrinking of the ones popular haberdashery department were all changes that reflected the changing behaviour of the nation. Woolworths is a shop that has memories for everyone, and will be very sadly missed in both Shoreham and Southwick Joan Upton’ To advertise call: 01273 452065 20/2/09 12:45:33
Samins “I
T’S NOT ABOUT the heat” that’s what I tell people when they say they don’t like curried food. Great Indian food should be about the combination of spices herbs and top quality natural ingredients not about your mouth exploding with a hot eruption. If the cooking is right the flavour of the food should shine through, as Anthony burgess watching his father finishing his favourite dish said “This curry was like a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony that I’d once heard, especially the last movement, with everything screaming and banging ‘joy’. It stunned, it made one fear great art. My father could say nothing after the meal he sat and was complete” In Shoreham the battle to produce the best curries is lead by Mo at SAMINS curry and Tandoori takeaway whose menu can be found in this magazine. For a real treat try their Bombay dishes, These Bombay curries in Chicken or meat are cooked with a blend of spices, which the chef refuses to disclose, but when mixed with the Potatoes, Tomatoes and Egg they mix to make a spectacular tasting dish. The vegetable Korai always reminds me of my visits to India it is very authentic and a long way from the more British styles of curry. Rogan dishes are cooked with tomatoes and
coriander; it is a very aromatic curry with Persian origins where they are cooked with clarified butter. What ever you try, Mo and his staff will be pleased to advise you, they can also deliver to your home usually within 45 minutes or if you collect you can save as much as 10%. Give yourself a treat tonight and order one now. Harry Bolter

Rapid Auto Centre R
APID AUTO CENTRE is a new venture that is jointly owned and run by Gary Stephens, Malcolm Baker and David Carpenter, who, until recently, all worked together at Evans Halshaw & RapidFit on the Old Shoreham Road in Portslade, “It was a shock when Evans Halshaw closed down, but setting up our garage together seemed the natural thing to do,” explains Gary. “ We’d worked together for so long and knew each other really well and most importantly, we all wanted to carry on providing a good service for your customers.” Last August they opened the doors to Rapid Auto Centre in North Street, Portslade – and just like at
18 INSIDE 0309.indd 18
Evans Halshaw they deal with servicing, repairs and MOTs for all makes and models of cars. “We really wanted to stay local to Portslade,” explains Malcolm, “ We’ve built up very good relationships with our customers here and it’s a great area to be based in.” And business is good! “We’ve been very lucky,” says Gary. “ A lot of our old Evans Halshaw customers have followed us to our new base on North Street, which is fantastic. Hopefully it means that they think we’ve always done a good job for them!” Judging by the letters pinned to their reception notice board, it’s more than just luck – they have a very
loyal client base! This is just one of the comments: “ Thank you for telling me about your new Company. Following the closure of RapidFit I was very worried as to where I might take my car for reliable repairs and MOT, not to mention of course the friendly staff – so I’ll be pleased to see you for an MOT in November!” The experience that Gary, Malcolm and David means that Rapid Auto Centre can deal with all makes and models of cars for general servicing, repairs and MOTs and more specialist services such as welding and electrical problems and aircon regassing – all to their usual high standards. As Malcolm says “ We
really want repeat customers, who we can do a good job for and to get to know. For example, a lot of taxi drivers use us because they know that we do a good quick job, don’t overcharge and don’t fit parts that aren’t necessary.” Gary goes on to explain that any parts that do have to be replaced are always kept for inspection if required. So why should you bring you car to Rapid Auto Centre? Over to Gary: “We offer a friendly service, we’ve got lots of experience in the motor trade and we can give you less pain in the pocket for a quality job”

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice
Fixed rates — are they at their lowest? T
HE MINUTES OF the recent Monetary Policy Committee meeting (MPC) have now been released. The MPC meet every month to decide the Bank of England base rate, this month it was cut to 1%, the lowest it has ever been. The minutes show that the decision to cut the rate was unanimous. One member voted for a higher cut, but this was overruled. The reason given was that further cuts could harm the economy. This is interesting and raises the question, is this the best it’s going to get? The fixed rates have been gradually reducing over the past few weeks and many lenders have already lowered their fixed rates following the last cut. Is this the time to book yourself a longer term fixed rate? People are in a number of situations with their mortgages. Much is dependent on which lender you are with. They have all taken different stances with the rate cuts, leaving things quite confusing. Some have passed on the full cuts to their standard variable rate. For example, C&G are now at 3%. If you are paying this rate then you will be feeling very comfortable for the moment. Other lenders are charging much more, some up to 5.75% or more — not so attractive.
If you are with a lender who charges more, you could find that you can obtain a fixed rate at a lower rate than you are currently paying… If you are with a lender who charges more, you could find that you can obtain a fixed rate at a lower rate than you are currently paying, meaning that you can secure a low payment for a period of time. As rates are seemingly at their lowest, now would be a great time to fix your mortgage rate. Many people tell me ‘but my friend is on a tracker rate and their rate is really low. Can’t I get one of those?’ The answer is yes, you can get a tracker rate, but you have missed the boat. If you took a tracker rate in the past, the percentage the lender was charging above bank base rate would have been lower. So, for example you may have obtained bank base rate +0.5%. This would have seemed reasonable at the time, when the bank base rate was 4%, you would have started out at 4.5% — you would now be paying 1.5%. Compare this to now, when lenders are charging 2.74%
above bank base rate. You would be paying 3.74% now, but beware when the bank base rate returns to more normal levels, if the bank base rate went up to 3%, you would be paying 5.74%. The time to book a tracker rate is in the past – fixed rates are now looking the more favourable option. So, if you want to keep your rate low for a period of time, now is the time to start looking. If you would like some help then please give me a call. We can check out exactly what rate you are paying at the moment, and compare this with the fixed rates now on offer.
If you would like assistance with your mortgage or any other financial matter please call me, Claire Cook, on 01273 224667. We are whole of market and offer a free initial consultation to Latest Homes readers.

f you would like to learn how to make a mosaic you could win a place to do just that! During March you can enter a free prize draw and the winner will be invited to attend a SOMOSAIC workshop free of charge. Ideal for complete beginners, these workshops are now taking place in Shoreham, run by Denise who loves to pass on her enthusiasm for this craft in
her sunny studio. The workshops provide an ideal opportunity to forget your cares and responsibilities for a few hours and turn your hand to creating something unique to keep. It is a very satisfying, absorbing and relaxing pastime which seems to make time fly by and can easily become addictive! Making mosaics is also a great way
to recycle as you can use up left over tiles or make something beautiful from things you find. It is also an ideal way to restore old furniture to a new lease of life. You can find out the dates of future workshops and enter the prize draw by going to the web site www.somosaic. co.uk or telephoning Denise on 01273 463268.
