FEBRUARY 2010

Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Snow and more snow! A white start to the new year for many of us! Although I love it, it offers its own problems. Well, its that time of year for chocolates and flowers and romance! February 14th. How will you be spending Valentines Day this year? Apparently, over one billion cards are sent each year worldwide with men spending twice as much money as women. So I hope you have a great day. We also spend this month celebrating the Chinese New Year on the 13th. It will be the Year of the Tiger. So happy returns and lets hope it is a year of prosperity and good news. We have a review of the great food being served at our

local Crown and Anchor and it sounds definitely delicious. You can read all about it on page 12. As well as that we have our local policing article and our local writer telling you about Shoreham Smugglers. I hope that you enjoy this months magazine and if you do have a local piece you would like to see included then please send it along with any photo’s and we will try to fit it in. Until March, Best Wishes, Angela

Friends needed for Marlipins Museum

S

ussex Archaeological Society is reviewing the way in which it runs the Marlipins Museum at Shoreham. This is a local Museum, containing a lot of material on the history, and especially the maritime and cinematic history, of Shoreham and is housed in possibly the oldest secular building in Sussex, in Shoreham High Street. In the past it has been supported by local volunteers and by the Shoreham Society. However, the Sussex Archaeological Society is convinced that the people of Shoreham could make much better use of the Museum, its displays, and its gallery. To that end, they are organising a public meeting to be held in the Museum gallery on Tuesday February 16, 2010, at 7.00 pm, with the intention of setting up a new Friends of the Marlipins Museum. Anyone interested is cordially invited. For more information contact the Trustee of the Sussex

Archaeological Society who is taking responsibility for this development, Professor G. J. Leigh, OBE, by e-mail (jeffery. leigh@sky.com) or telephone (01273 596292).

Living for the moment Waves ahead… A

re you too caught up in what needs doing next week or what you didn’t do yesterday to enjoy what’s happening right now? Exhausting, isn’t it? What you need is a break from dwelling on the past and worrying about the future; you need to start living in the moment! How to do that? Well, have you ever sat down, started a job or activity, and become so absorbed in what you were doing that time passed without your notice? As you concentrate and focus, your awareness merges with the activity and you are ‘living in the moment.’ Psychologists call it “flow,” and in Buddhism it’s called mindfullness. Living in the moment is not easy in a busy life. But, make the effort to practice being totally immersed in what you are doing for some time every day and your life will be more balanced. Don't zone out; zone in. Do things that are active, and that encourage you to look around and engage the real world in that moment. Here are some ideas to get you started. Play a team sport. Tennis or football, whatever it is, everything in sport happens in the moment. No time to worry about the last shot because another one is coming right back at you! Sing and dance to music. Join a choir or dance class, sing and dance along to your favourite tunes in the kitchen. You’ll become immersed in the music and really be living in the moment. Creative interests. Gardening, painting, birdwatching, juggling, fishing. Whatever it is, a creative interest will lend itself to mindfulness as it focuses all your attention. Games and Puzzles. Whether it’s card games, board games, jigsaws, crosswords or sudoku, all require a level of concentration that will have you totally absorbed. Commit random, spontaneous acts of kindness. Opportunities to help other people come when you’re consciously aware of others needs. So make a difference to someone else’s life with an unexpected act of kindness, or sign up for some voluntary work and help to make the world a better place! For more ideas on for a better life, see ‘Bounce. Use the power of resilience to live the life you want’. Available at Amazon.co.uk 4 INSIDE 0210.indd 4

eople in Adur and Worthing are invited to have their say in a new sustainable community strategy called Waves Ahead. This plan will influence the services councils and other partners provide for the next 20 years. Adur in Partnership and Worthing Together are the partnerships working on the Waves Ahead plan. These two partnerships consist of Adur and Worthing councils, West Sussex County Council, the police, West Sussex Primary Care Trust, businesses and voluntary organisations. Council officers, councillors and others preparing the plan are urging Adur and Worthing residents to tell them what they feel is most important to them, what they like about where they live and what improvements they would like to see. These are some of the highlight important issues: • Support for families • Adults and young people increasing their physical activity • Having a healthy workplace • Increasing skills, training and apprenticeships • Helping businesses to start up • Supporting volunteering • Balancing the need for development against the need to protect the natural environment. Adur Cabinet member for health, safety and wellbeing, David Simmons said: “This plan, reflecting community views, is going to identify what services are needed for the people of Adur and Worthing for many years ahead, so it is vital we get as many people as possible to tell us what they think is important to them where they live.” Worthing Cabinet member for health, safety and wellbeing, Kevin Skepper said: “We want to make sure the Adur and Worthing of tomorrow is even better for all our residents and their children and we need to make sure we provide the right services to do this.” Please complete the Waves Ahead Consultation online questionnaire available on www.adurinpartnership. org or www.worthingtogether.org, questionnaires are also available in public buildings throughout Adur And Worthing until 12 February 2010.

Spring is in the air h

oPeFully By the time you read this we are on the way to Spring. As I sit and write this, it is a gorgeous sunny day, having just got rid of the snow, with the forecast of more snow on the way. It just goes to show how unpredictable our early Spring weather can be and how careful you need to be at this time of year. It’s all too easy to rush into the garden, having spent a small fortune on plants, because the weather was nice at the weekend. Only to see them killed off by the frost and cold winds a few weeks later. Rather than look at all aspects of the garden, I thought this month would be a good month to look at the start of the vegetable year, where the garden work really begins, but a lot can be done in the comfort of the greenhouse or even indoors. The first shoots of the new year are beginning to show, but it’s wise to exercise caution. I love this time of year and I’m always impatient to get the seeds for our allotments going as early as possible, only for them some to get killed off as they go out too early. It’s amazing how quickly plants will catch up when the conditions are right. Having said that, there are still plenty of crops that can be started off in the greenhouse or under cover to get a head start. Leeks, French Beans, Salads, brussell sprouts, cauliflower, spring cabbage and tomatoes can all be started off under cover. I use a mix of electric propagators 8

INSIDE 0210.indd 8

and simple cloches to start them off. I also have my converted old fridge. To save dumping it, it has had a panel of the door cut out and replaced with glass, ventilation holes drilled in and a small heating element placed in it. It worked a treat last year and cost about £5 in all! How’s that for recycling. It’s essential you wash out any old seed trays that you re-use and make sure you use new compost as well, to give them the best chance you can. I normally use a mixture of John Innes Number 1 or 2 and sieved multipurpose compost. Seeds are expensive, so it is always worthwhile shopping around if you haven’t saved any from last year. The internet is always a good source of cheap seeds, as is swapping seeds with any other gardeners! I have also found some own brand seeds have had better results than the more expensive ones, as at prices around 40p for a packet its well worth a gamble. Pay attention to the planting instructions on the packets, especially the seed planting depths. If you are intending on planting potatoes and onions, don’t miss the boat and make sure you get your seed potatoes and onion setts. They do sell out very quickly as they seem to be more popular than ever. If you have a new plot than potatoes are a very good crop to help break the ground up. Having looked all over, I have found garden and Diy stores the cheapest, as they normally have deals and you

avoid the high postage costs of internet companies. Many people chit their potatoes before planting them. This is basically placing them in trays and letting the sprouts develop before they go in the ground. Some people swear by it and some people don’t bother. I have always had mixed results with this. Shallots and onions should be just coming to the time to plant up as you read this. If you do venture outside, get plenty of compost into your beds, and keep adding to the bean trenches. It’s also a good time to plant any fruit bushes or canes and finish off the pruning of fruit canes such as raspberries and to fruit trees. If you have any areas you intend to use for early planting, it’s a helpful to get cloches over the ground or cover them with black plastic to help get the soils temperature up. Good luck with the seeds and enjoy the excitement as those first new shots show themselves, it really does make you feel like spring is on its way at long last. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice

Lenders increase variable rates W

ell, WhAt A start to the year! There we all were, expecting to return to work and possibly not feeling too happy about it. Then came the snow! It feels like we have had a false start. Well, maybe by the time of you reading this article, we are all back in the swing of things. And, on that note, I would like to wish you a happy new year! Over the last few days, as people have been spending snowy days at home, I have received quite a few emails asking me to review clients’ mortgages. It is a traditional time when people want to take stock of things, and finances are often on the list. Recently, many people haven’t been moving their mortgages around as the base rates of the lenders have been so low, it often has not been worth changing. It may now be time though to check things out. Last week the Monetary Policy Committee voted to keep the Bank of England base rate at 0.5%, this is for the tenth month running. Sentiment seems to be that the rates will remain low for 2010, which is fine if your mortgage is linked to bank base rate. For those who are paying your lenders standard variable rate, however, it may be a slightly different story. Did you know that several lenders have now increased their own standard variable rates. Normally, this would happen only if the bank base rate increases, but in this case the lenders have increased their variable rates anyway. The lenders with higher rates, can offer better terms to savers and can attract more money. This is why others may follow suit, as they will not want to lose their account holders to other organisations.

…if you are on your lender’s standard variable rate, you may see an increase even if the Bank base rate stays as it is. If you are on a tracker rate — linked to the Bank of England base rate, you may find that your rate stays lower for longer. So, if you are on your lender’s standard variable rate, you may see an increase even if the Bank base rate stays as it is. If you are on a tracker rate — linked to the Bank of England base rate, you may find that your rate stays lower for longer. At the moment, there are some extremely competitive tracker rates around, so it might be a good time for a review. Currently lenders are being very choosy who they lend to, and are reserving the most competitive rates for those who have plenty of equity. It is so important to get independent

advice in this market, and an adviser who has access to the whole marketplace. Your adviser will seek out the most competitive deal for you taking into account your circumstances, and financial background. Also with a lender who is likely to lend. If now is not the right time to change your mortgage, they will tell you.

At Talk Money we offer a free initial consultation, so why not call us for independent, friendly advice on your mortgage situation. Call me, Claire Cook, and my team on 01273 224667, we would be very happy to help. Buy to let mortgages are not regulated by the Finanicial Services Authority. Crown & Anchor

t

he SWAShBucKling BuccAneer – one of the most recognised images in Shoreham High Street but don’t be deceived by the pint-sized frontage of the Crown and Anchor. Giles and Sandra Stone’s public house & restaurant opens up downstairs to a second bar. The well-seated restaurant, function room/ cocktail bar and terrace backs right onto the river Adur. The sheltered riverside terrace is just perfect for listening to a live band with a glass of Pimms on a warm & sunny Sunday afternoon. Walk through the entrance on a cold evening and you feel instantly at home. With homely lighting you could quite easily get comfortable and let time drift past. It's the relaxed ambience that has made the Crown and Anchor a High Street favourite. The restaurant is enveloped behind a high-ceiling windowed conservatory which makes it a comfortable environment to enjoy a meal at anytime of the day – whether reading a newspaper over an early Sunday morning full English breakfast, having lunch with the family or a intimate 12

INSIDE 0210.indd 12

meal in the evening. Looking at the menu, the prices are very well placed for the wide selection of dishes they offer. Recently, their three-course Christmas menu for just £9.95 per head was an absolute success. They hope to continue special priced set menus starting 2010 with a selection of local fish. Now can a two-course set fish menu for just £9.95 be good value? Nope, it's great value. Don't be mistaken – these are not measly portions – they are generous homemade dishes using locally caught fish. The food is of high quality and the value is exceptional. There is a selection of four starters consisting of Fisherman’s Chowder, a classic Italian Spaghetti Vongole, Deep Fried Whitebait and Smoked Mackeral

Paté. Now if that hasn't whet your appetite then take a look at the main courses: Smoked Haddock; Fish Pie; Moules Marinière; and Fresh Salmon & Spring Onion Fish Cakes. We opt for the Fisherman’s Chowder served with crusty bread to start and Smoked Haddock as the main from the set Fish Menu but we also decided to go for a meat dish choosing an 8oz Rib-Eye Steak from their extensive main menu. desert then you would be now. We found the service very professional and attentive. The Crown and Anchor, in short, is a very versatile pub stroke restaurant stroke cocktail bar stroke private function establishment serving food and drink all day from 10am until late. So whether you fancy a fish dish, breakfast or a couple of pints of ale on a Friday night then you will always find Giles & Sandra and their team ready to serve.

A hearty bowl of Fisherman’s Chowder soup was served and that went down very nicely. The dish tasted great – just perfect for those cold winter nights. This was followed by the Smoked Haddock. Even though I am not a great fish eater I thought this dish was wonderful and I am not just saying that. Light yet succulent Haddock on

through the meat. For £13.50, it is very well priced. To finish off it would be rude not to have a desert so we both opt for the homemade chocolate brownie served with vanilla ice cream. What a desert to die for. Slightly rich but brilliantly gooey. If you weren't full before the top of mash potato – yep, I can taste it again just by thinking about it. I think I surprised myself and will certainly be ordering it again. We certainly recommend ordering from the two course set fish menu — not forgetting the price is really good too at just £9.95 per head! The medium rib-eye steak served with red wine & shallot sauce with large mushrooms didn’t hang around for long either as each cut glided

Food: Wide selection and well-priced for generous quality food. Ambience: Depends on time of day but wonderful whatever time you go in. Service: Very attentive. Shoreham Smugglers S

horehAM WAS A favourite port of smugglers, as with the South Downs behind, and the rough condition of the roads, it was remote enough for the trade to be plied in secret. The easily accessible beach between Lancing and Shoreham and nearby woods also added to the ease in which merchandise could be taken from or to ships under cover of darkness. The punishment for being caught was being hung from a gallows on the seashore, but the reality was that few smugglers were caught and convicted. Although today we tend to think of smuggling as involving goods being illegally brought into Britain, largescale smuggling began around the 12th century, with goods being illegally exported. In the time of Henry 111, the smuggling of wool out of the country, often via Shoreham began after the king added a duty of 5 marks per sack to wool being exported to Holland. This was to protect the interests of British weavers, but those involved in sheep rearing and wool trading were far from happy about it. Wool was Britain’s most important export in medieval times and there were many merchants keen to avoid this tax. Wool smugglers were known as ‘owlers’ due to the ‘hoot’ they used as a nighttime signal. As export duties rose at the end of the 13th century they flourished. With successive wars with France and outbreaks of plague affecting the legal wool trade, merchants had little option but to be part of the illegal trade. Those doing the actual smuggling were not at this time paid well. In the 17th century they would only be paid a shilling for a hard and risky night’s work. In those times the river Adur’s course and navigation meant it passed very close by the Sussex Pad. The original building of the inn, later destroyed by fire, had large cellars suitable for the hiding of contraband. In the days before the coastguards there were often only a few Preventative Officers on horseback to apprehend smugglers. The smugglers, through bribes, threats and other means often had a system in place where they would be warned of any visit by the officers. By the 18th century, smuggling was

18 INSIDE 0210.indd 18

big business. Now it was imported goods from Europe, the Americas and elsewhere that made up the majority of the contraband. Members of the public who turned a blind eye or offered storage space to smugglers would often be generously rewarded with some of the brandy, tobacco, tea or silk. People from all walks of life including the gentry and the clergy became involved. The Preventative Officers were fighting a losing battle. In 1735 they waylaid ten smugglers smuggling brandy at Kingston Beach. A scuffle ensued, and although no arrests were made the brandy was seized. Many had switched from using their boats for oyster fishing to bringing in contraband from the continent. In the 1790s several important seizures of spirits were made at Shoreham harbour as more resources were provided to fight the illegal trade. At the end of the 18th century Shoreham was also a major port for people smuggling. Thousands of French refugees fleeing the reign of terror that followed the revolution paid to be brought illegally to Britain. By the early 19th century, ships weighing up to sixty tons, were hired by French and Flemish merchants to smuggle tea, silks, tobacco or spirits. Their colleagues in Sussex then hired heavily armed gangs to wait near a quiet beach at night for a signal that a ship was approaching. On arrival, the ship’s crew would unload the contraband by rowing boats, and the onshore gang

would pack it on horses and into carts to whisk it away. Some of the ‘disused’ building where the goods were stored had the reputation of being ‘haunted’ to keep away prying eyes. The farm workers involved in the collection and storage of contraband were said to fall asleep behind the plough or about their other tasks, after a long night’s work as smugglers. By now the revenue men had their own ships to try to intercept the contraband including the cutter ‘Hound’ captained by John Butler and based at Shoreham. Another ship ‘Jane’ was legendary in being involved in the illegal trade, but there are no reports of it ever being seized. Some of the gangs were ruthless and led by violent criminals. In 1746 the Hawkhurst Gang, based in that Kent village, captured an officer and his three assistants at Shoreham when he tried to seize their illegal cargo. Two of the assistants were former smugglers who had changed sides, and the gang flogged them almost to death and then transported them to France where they were abandoned. From 1817 the Coastal Blockade – groups of sailors employed as the earliest form of the coastguards, joined the Preventative Officers. The Coastguard itself was formed in 1831 Smugglers often used cunning rather than force to dodge the law. In 1855, a wild beast show visited Shoreham and the coastguards were given complimentary tickets. That evening while they were all enjoying the zoo, a ship loaded with contraband moored at the Custom House’s own quay. Supposedly carrying stone, beneath it was hidden tobacco that was stealthily unloaded into barges, which travelled up river to the Chalk Pits of Upper Beeding. From here horse drawn vans took it on its way. The ship itself left Shoreham the following morning before news of what had happened leaked out. Nearly everyone working for Shoreham Coastguard was replaced over this very costly trick. Smuggling was as well organised as any legitimate business and had the support of much of the general public. It was so unstoppable, that it contributed to the move towards free trade in the mid nineteenth century. As import tariffs decreased so did the amount of smuggling, though of course, on a smaller scale and in different guises it is still around today. A woman’s work is never done!

W

omen do a tremendous amount of work such as bringing up families, caring for relatives, managing home finances and helping local groups. But sometimes they are missing out on the opportunity to earn money through their efforts. How much potential do women have to make money for themselves? It’s almost unlimited if you speak to South East Women’s Business Service Project Manager, Lizzy Seward, “We all have qualities which can make us money, either by working for someone else or working for ourselves. If you work out what you are good at, what you enjoy, how that can be of use to someone and how much you should charge for it, you can always find ways to earn money and Business Link is here to help women with those questions.” Perhaps you have recently undertaken some training and want to put your new skills to good use. Or you may have a hobby which could make you money. Earning money for yourself can start from as little as 24

4 hours ironing a week or running a craft stall at the weekend to a full time business. What’s Stopping You? The South East events to inspire Sussex women to start in business. FREE ONE-DAY EVENT FOR ASPIRING Sussex BUSINESS WOMEN, 25th February, Thistle Hotel, Brighton Book online at www. whatsstoppingyouevents. co.uk or call 01732 878 007

What’s Stopping You? Is a FREE informal one-day event for women who are interested in working for themselves, or who have been trading for under a year. For the third year Business Link is running a series of full day events across the region, to inspire women to go into business. Last year’s events were oversubscribed so booking early for this chance to get FREE tailored information and advice, is recommended. Delegates will meet and hear from successful entrepreneurs and can benefit from the experience of local women who have

already set up in business. The day kicks off at 9.30am with a seminar to introduce women to confident networking. Other talks during the day include ‘Money, Money, Money!’ and ‘54321-countdown to effective marketing’ as well as a panel session ‘She means business!’ from women telling their business story. All talks are delivered by local business women showing that you can make your dream a reality. One of the ‘She means business!’ panellist is Franchisor and Editor of ABC Magazine Sussex, Rachel Boyle. Rachel was keen to be involved in this event as she has had previous dealings with Business Link and is aware of the value of its service. “The Business Link What’s Stopping You? event is a unique opportunity for women drawing together a wide range of support services and likeminded women together under one roof giving you the confidence to make your business idea a reality. The event itself acts as a great

informal introduction into Business Link and what it can potentially offer you and your business. I often find myself calling the Business Link Customer Service team sometimes asking the most wacky question. The operatives that answer are always cheerful and happy to help. They offer reassurance that my question is never too bizarre!” Alongside the seminars there will be an exhibition area where you can meet key contacts for your future business such as HM Revenue & Customs and find out about issues such as tax and national insurance along with local support groups such as Mums In Biz and The Womens Business Clubs. Additionally there will be a number of women owned business exhibits where you have the opportunity to talk to local women who work for themselves, see their businesses in action and ask questions, a networking zone and friendly business advisers to answer questions. Everything is free – even lunch and refreshments! An attendee from last year’s event, Catherine Davis, Kahia Celebrations “I am so grateful to have been informed and advised for my new business. I feel energised and excited to get going – Big thank you”. To find out more and book your place, visit www. whatsstoppingyouevents. co.uk or call the Business Link events hotline 01732 878 007 What’s Stopping Your? events are supported by SEEDA. Business Link provides information, advice and support needed to start, maintain and grow a business. It is a government funded service which provides help via its website, business advisers and customer service teams. To advertise call: 01273 452065 22/01/2010 14:20
