Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Welcome the February Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. On the 10th of February we have the Chinese New Year which will be the year of the Snake. Of course closer to home we have the Feast day of Saint Valentine; the celebration of Love and affection — commonly known as St Valentines Day on the 14th Feb — and where better to get your loved one that perfect present than Shoreham’s very own Darren Ross Jewellery in the High Street. In this months issue you can read the latest article from Judy Upton on Shoreham’s own Flower
— The Starry Clover. We also have the latest from Mark Oakley on gardening and also news from our Neighbourhood Police Officers on what’s happening locally. Plus we have all local business news and What’s on guide for you to refer to. As always, please continue to send us your news, what’s on and we will always endeavour to fit it into the magazine. See you again in March when we see lighter days. All the best, Angela

AIRTRADE has been established for over 20 years. It strives for a different way of doing business and is a growing international movement for change. By ensuring producers earn enough for today, and a little extra for tomorrow, FAIRTRADE seeks to put humanity back into international trade, through our everyday decisions. Many farmers and workers in developing countries struggle to provide for their families, despite working hard to provide us with products we take for granted. By choosing products with the FAIRTRADE Mark, you can be sure that a fair price has been paid to the producer and workers' rights and environmental standards are met. A little extra has been paid for the producer group to invest in their communities, environment or strengthening their business.. Projects are chosen democratically by farmers and workers, working in co-operatives FAIRTRADE hold a special Fortnight each year when various events and promotions take place raising awareness. This year FAIRTRADE fortnight will take place from 25th February to 10th March. At this time Supermarkets and Stores especially promote FAIRTRADE by giving special offers on the food, clothes and goods they sell. Adur is working to become a recognised FAIRTRADE District. This is the status awarded by the Fairtrade Foundation, to recognise communities where everyone's doing their bit for FAIRTRADE. From the Council to cafes, colleges to community groups, everyone can do something, and in a FAIRTRADE Town, they are! There are over 1000 FAIRTRADE Towns across the world, taking community action for trade justice. The Adur campaign started in 2005. Membership of the group includes local residents, churches, schools and they are supported by Adur District Council. They promote FAIRTRADE in various ways during the year, including taking part in FAIRTRADE Fortnight and organising an event in Adur. They have built a good partnership with schools in the area, and most churches.

Moving into spring W
ell were heading into February and already the weather has played its usual tricks on us. Just as there was plenty of evidence of spring bulbs pushing their way up, along came the snow and ice to cause havoc. At least were beginning to see slightly longer days and more progress in the garden now. Hopefully the snow didn’t do too much damage in the garden, but it’s best to check. Have a look at trees and shrubs. If there is any evidence of broken branches, caused by the weight of snow, then remove them with a neat cut to stop infection. Have a check of water butts to make sure there are no cracks or leaks caused by the frost. Another problem can be frost getting into pointing on the paving. As the water gets in it expands in the frost and acts like a lever blowing the pointing out. Luckily this is quite a simple if time consuming job to put right, but definitely one for the better weather. It’s really a time for getting to grips with the garden as we will soon be in spring and it’s easy to miss planting deadlines. If you grow flowers or vegetables from seed, then I always find it a worthwhile exercise to come up with a simple sowing plan. It doesn’t have to be complicated. I simply divide my packets of seeds into boxes labeled by months, so I know when I need to sow them. With plants such as tomatoes I use a couple of different varieties in different 6
months to keep a good supply coming, but you can do the same with any plant. If you check once weeks then you’re unlikely to miss planting them, and if you do, there’s always next year. As were getting to grips with the garden, make sure you get your tools sorted out. A quick service of the mower now is better than waiting till the height of spring when everyone else takes it to the local shop to get it done. Give tools a quick clean and sharpen, and it’s worth giving any wooden handles a coat of wood oil to get a bit more life out of them If you’re making big changes in the garden, then now is a good time to start planting any hedging plants. If you are planting hedging, then it’s well worth considering planting varieties that are resistant to honey fungus, which is becoming quite common. Any good nursery will be able to advise you. You can also tidy up a lot of old hedging at this time of year to start getting it looking good for spring, but be wary of hard frosts, and any birds that may be starting to nest within Although we still get the cold days at this time of year we are also beginning (he said in hope) to get the odd warm sunny day when it really feels like spring. A few days like that are always a good incentive to get out into the garden. If you do get out and are considering getting work done for the spring then make sure you get in contact as early
as possible, as any decent landscaper should be starting to get heavily booked up, so you’re less likely to avoid being disappointed. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Financial Advice – a new perspective I
f you have taken financial advice in the past, you may have used an adviser who recommended a product, you invested, then you never saw him or her again. This was typical of how many advisers worked, this is because they were paid to arrange the policy for you, not to keep an eye on it and ensure it continued to meet your needs. The result has been that people have accumulated pensions and investments over the years and nobody is really looking after them. In the old days, advisers were probably the biggest buyers of filing cabinets in the UK! Large dusty files accumulated, incoherent piles of paperwork which you had to hunt through each time you gave advice. You can imagine that it was difficult to get information on clients quickly or to find clients invested in areas which needed to be changed. Unless advisers made a special diary note for their best clients, their systems did not support making regular reviews. The system of adviser payment and the lack of systems in the old days meant that ongoing advice and management was difficult to achieve.
What has changed? In a word – everything! Firstly, advisers are no longer paid ‘commission’ from products they arrange. They may charge an agreed upfront fee (in most cases this can come from the contract if you prefer). The initial fee will often be a lot lower than before, with the adviser then being paid a regular agreed

Computers! At Talk Money, we pride ourselves on being a member of Best Practice IFA Group. Based in North Street they have won many accolades including Best Network 2012 from the Money Marketing awards. This is largely due to their
high level standards and their client management systems. No dusty filing cabinets, everything is scanned and we can get clear information about your finances at the touch of a button. This allows us to put a clear and ongoing plan in place for you, and to manage it. You may feel out of touch with how things are going with your money, not any more, you can sign into your client file and get up to date values, updated as often as you wish. If you haven’t seen an adviser for a while, perhaps now is the time to do so! Bring your finances into the 21st century! Are you killing your pet with kindness? This New Year, research tells us that out of the 45% of people who made a New Year resolution, 40% want to lose weight. By Hannah Capon from Coastway Shoreham
B
eing overweight isn’t just a health issue for us humans, it’s also a cause of many chronic problems that affect the health of our pets: orthopaedic, heart and skin conditions and diabetes. Overweight pets experience a poorer quality of life and sadly, a shorter lifespan. If you’re one of the 40% who’s trying to lose weight this New Year, does your pet need to join you? Can you see a distinct waistline from above, a clear chest and smaller abdomen from the side and can you feel your pet’s ribs? If the answer’s no, then your pet is probably overweight.
What can you do? Its simple, exercise more and give foods with less fat, or smaller portions. A vast amount of my time in the consulting room is spent persuading the owner that their pets don't need breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, supper or treats. Even wafer thin ham, boiled chicken, and dental sticks have a significant calorie count. It’s more beneficial for your pet to have ten minutes of your time than ten seconds of an edible treat. The vast majority of weight loss advice is aimed at the owner. I generally ask them to aim for 1% weight loss per week, and to come back and see me a month later to reassess. This leaves the owners to implement obvious changes without cost, as well as offering them some "peer pressure" to motivate them ready for the next visit. Most practices, like Coastway Shoreham offer free weight clinics run by qualified veterinary nurses. Give your local practice a ring for more advice and some New Year motivation.

Shoreham's own flower – The Starry Clover S
horeham’s shingle beach is a rare piece of natural habitat that supports a varied range plants that have adapted to this windswept, salty environment. There are a few other vegetated shingle beaches like Shoreham in Britain and it is a rare habitat worldwide. Among the plants that make their homes here between land and sea are Horned Yellow Sea Poppies, the blue-flowered Viper’s Bugloss, Sea Kale and Samphire. Most rare of all however is the Starry Clover, or Starry Trefoil (Latin name Trifolium Stellatum), as it is also known. Shoreham beach is the only place in Great Britain where this plant is still known to grow wild. It is most striking after flowering, when its creamypink flowers are replaced by the balls of star-shaped seed cases that give it, its name. Before Shoreham beach was widely developed, the Starry Clover was plentiful. In the l920s a visitor to Shoreham recalled, “As well as the usual shore-loving plants on that August day I was pleased to find… stretches of Starry-headed Trefoil.” By 1953 the situation was bleaker however, with another visitor noting “This year after much searching I found one small plant with three flowers on it. I last saw it in 1948 when there was a considerable colony – so I fear it will not long survive. In his book ‘The Story Of Shoreham’, published in 1921, Henry Cheal also mentions the flower saying ‘Not long since, the writer observed, growing from between the joints of some stonework at Old Shoreham a specimen of the Starry Clover.’ As the plant is a shoreline species, this one must either have been transplanted, or brought there somehow as a seed, unless possibly it was a survivor of the time when Shoreham harbour was at Old Shoreham. As my grandfather George W. Upton recalled in the early 1950s, “Shoreham Beach, once the happy hunting ground of naturalists and botanists, is now rapidly becoming a built up area of industrial and private buildings. The rare sea birds which once nested there have long since gone. Some of the rare plants and flowers have gone forever, and those remaining are being ruthlessly dug up and destroyed. I have seen men and women on the marginal land between Old Fort Road and the sea with garden forks and a wheelbarrow dig up and dump one of the last patches of the tall blue flowering Viper’s Bugloss, the rare white
12
flowered Sea Kale and the very rare Horned Yellow Sea Poppy. Shoreham’s own flower, the extremely rare Starry Clover, once found only on Shoreham Beach, can no longer be found there.” Today the Bugloss, Kale and Sea Poppy do fortunately live on, as the remaining areas still colonised by the shingle-dwelling plants were eventually saved and conserved. The Starry Clover however was in need of special assistance, which luckily due to the efforts of a few determined Shoreham residents, it received. In those days conservation projects were in their infancy and it was local people themselves who decided something must be done. These enthusiasts collected seed from a single flower head of the last Starry Clover they could discover, after a prolonged search on Shoreham beach. From these few precious seeds, plants were grown in pots and from their seeds more Starry Clover were cultivated until they had twenty-plus strong, healthy plants. From these carefully nurtured plants, the Starry Clover was reintroduced to Shoreham beach. In June 2006, Shoreham Beach was declared a Local Nature Reserve due to its unusual vegetated shingle habitat and the diversity of its plant life. Laws threatening the prosecution of anyone digging up or picking wild flowers have also offered the rare plants protection. Times have changed too in that we now have a better understanding of the importance of wild flowers and the bees and butterflies that live on them. Today when we see swathes of wild flowers, we appreciate their beauty rather than see them as weeds and their habitat as waste ground ripe for cultivation. Now too there is the Friends Of Shoreham Beach, a group actively protecting and educating people about the beach habitat and its flora and fauna. They hold litter-picking days to improve the environment and a popular annual Wild Flower Walk to show people the beach’s wild flowers in full bloom and help them to identify the species present. The new beach boardwalk between Shingle Road and Ferry Road allowing disabled access to the reserve means everyone may go and visit the wild flowers growing on the shingle and enjoy their wild beauty. Neighbourhood Policing
Local scam
The Adur and Worthing district have received a number of reports recently indicating a scam. Residents have been contacted by phone and email by a person who clamed he / she is a Metropolitan Police Officer. This person then tells the victim that their details have been found during a police investigation and they need to check to see if the information matches what police have found. In some cases money has even been transfused to this person from a victim’s bank account. Upon investigation this person is believed not to be a Police Officer and is attempting to gather personal information from unsuspecting and trusting residents. We would like to stress that Police would never ask you to transfer money to us nor would we ask for such information by phone. Should you be contacted by anybody who clams to be from the police we suggest you ask for the persons individual warrant number and then call the police force they clam to be from by dialling 101 to confirm the persons identity. Never give your personal details to anybody over the
phone that you don’t know to be who they say they are without checking first. If in doubt call the police on 101.
Poor weather
Recently we have seen some treacherous conditions on our roads due to poor weather and dark mornings and evening. We must all remember that we have a responsibility to keep ourselves and others safe and by doing the following we can all help achieve this. • Leave plenty of time to reach your destination. • Properly deice your vehicle. • Assess the weather conditions to see if it is safe. • Plan your return journey. • Keep a hot drink in your car. • Have a blanket with you. • Keep something to eat. • Drive appropriately depending on the conditions. • Have a charged mobile phone with you for emergencies. Don’t use it just because it’s there without a Bluetooth hands free kit. Staying safe is key and taking the time to make yourself safe is the best start to your journey that you can make. Details of your local cafficers, current priorities and dates of local meetings are available on-line at www.sussex.police.uk (enter your postcode) or by telephone by calling 101.

Art from the heart T
he thing that most people do when entering the cosy interior of the Shoreham Gallery for the first time is to take a step inside and then stop. They are compelled to stop in order to take in the creative beauty that suddenly surrounds them. The window display visible from the street outside merely hints at the wonders to be found within. At this point, a quick glance around only serves to whet the appetite for a more detailed study of the exhibits on display. Initially, vibrant colours leap out to excite the visual sense, radiating from walls filled with paintings and drawings of a diverse range of subjects in all mediums, supplemented by some stunning photography of local scenes and beyond. The eye is drawn to snug corners and shelves where glass work and pottery are picked out by spotlights which serve to enhance their stunning beauty. Here and there, other creations in 3d demand attention; tactile wood carvings, comfy cushions, sculptures using a variety of raw materials, ceramics and mosaics as well. Similar exhibits are placed
before a window to the rear of the Gallery, the natural light lending the works a new dimension. As if all this was not enough, glass cabinets house exquisite items of jewellery, suitable for any occasion. A large selection of unique cards would add a personal touch to those same occasions. The Gallery is run on a co-operative basis and one or more of the exhibiting artists is always on hand to offer advice, help, or chat about the work they do. The Gallery has a room upstairs where members can run workshops, details of which can be found in the Gallery or on the website. The Gallery is open from 10.00am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, Saturday 9.00am to 5.30pm and from 11.00am to 4.00pm on Sunday. The Shoreham Gallery can be found at 27 Brunswick Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5WA. Telephone on 01273 272063 E-mail: shoreham.gallery@gmail.com or visit www.shorehamgallery.co.uk.
Shoreham Gallery is run solely by a collective of talented local artists. On display is a wonderful selection of diverse and original work from oil paintings, watercolours, photography, sculptures, jewellery, ceramics, wood, glass, textiles and mosaics to handmade cards.
