SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK

FEBRUARY 2015

Editor’s comment Welcome to the February edition of the Inside Shoreham and the Southwick Magazine and local business Directory. It’s the end of a very cold and frosty January. With temperatures plummeting we have still having very cold days and nights here in Shoreham and Southwick, however we have all the local events happening in our Whats On section for you to brave the cold and rain to get out and about.. We are into the second month of 2015 and there are lots of things up and coming in the area. We have had the re-opening of the Ropetackle Café. I can certainly vouch for the relaxed atmosphere and welcome at the centre - with gorgeous cakes and savoury dishes done freshly by Veronica Thomason and her team - she has been in catering for the past 30 years with her company Cakes and Quiches. In Southwick there is a new Café – Pannisa Coffee Lounge just opened – more about that on page 4. Plus Adur Council has also mentioned recently the possibility of a Beach Café, read more on page 4 also. As for the rest of this issue we have the latest article from Mark on Gardening in February and also Judy’s Uptons piece on Trade Tokens. Have a wonderful Valentines! Keep warm and we will see you in March. Please keep sending in your news events, charity events. The cut off date is the 12th February. Warm Regards, Angela

BEACH GREEN CAFÉ?

The opportunity to develop a café on Shoreham Beach Green is being advertised by Adur District Council. Shoreham Beach Green occupies a unique position just a stone’s throw from the waterfront and a beautiful nature reserve – however the small toilet block currently located there doesn’t exactly enhance these natural assets. To improve the local offering, Adur District Council is keen to attract a developer who can replace the toilet block with a facility more befitting the Green’s charms. Only the area immediately around the existing toilet block is available for development, and the Council has said that the new building will need to provide public conveniences, as well as a beach shower and, potentially, a kiosk to cater to visitors’ needs. Councillor Pat Beresford, Executive Member for Regeneration at Adur District Council, comments: “This is a unique opportunity to sensitively enhance Shoreham Beach Green. The site is not far from the nature reserve and has excellent access to the beach as well as nearby car parking for visitors - as such it is a magnet for the local community and visitors alike.” The site is being marketed at the moment, and potential developers have until 31st March 2015 to submit an application. Once received and evaluated, the local community will be consulted on the future use as part of a formal planning process. The details please visit: http://bit.ly/beachgreen

HISTORY OF RAF TRULEIGH HILL RADAR STATION Roy Taylor, ex RAF and author, will be holding a talk and slide show of the history of RAF Truleigh Hill Radar Station on Monday 2nd February at 10am at the Southlanders Community Café, Milward Court, Wilmot Road, Shoreham-by-Sea. There will be a £1 admission with 50p going toward funding for a village green sign on Williams Road. Refreshements will be available.

Ropetackle Café Reopens “2015 marks the beginning of something very exciting at Ropetackle,” said Ropetackle’s spokesman Mark Phillips. “We re-open our newly refurbished and revamped Ropetackle Café. Located in our light and airy foyer, we’ll have a delicious range of hot and cold drinks on offer, plus a wonderful menu of freshly made sandwiches, paninis, soups, jacket potatoes, scrumptious cakes, and more! The cherry on top however will be the brand new, mouth-watering Ropetackle Café, created by cake-maker extraordinaire Veronica Thomason who will be running the café. Veronica has over 30 years’ experience in catering, and has become renowned for her cake-making expertise. So much so she’s baked birthday cakes for some well-known characters! So if you fancy tasting the delights of her brand new Ropetackle Cake, do pop in and say ‘hi’”. Veronica said: “…I started making celebration cakes when my son was three years old, and when the cake orders started rolling in, I decided to set up a little business and the rest is history! I’ve made celebration cakes for all sorts of people; Nick Cave’s 40th birthday cake, Sir Donald Sinden’s 80th birthday cake (I even got a mention in a West End programme for this one!) childhood birthday cakes for Passenger, and even a wedding cake in the shape of Brighton Pavilion! However, it has always been a dream of mine to run a café so when I was asked by Ropetackle to re-launch theirs, I jumped at the chance. I have a great team behind me and can’t wait to start welcoming people through the door!” The Ropetackle Café is open now and the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing coffee, meet with friends for a light lunch, or get some work done with their free Wi-Fi. Tel: 01273 464440, www.ropetacklecentre.co.uk/cafe. Ropetackle Arts Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham. Open 10am-4.30pm, Monday-Saturday.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Making sense of finances M ANY PEOPLE WAIT until a life changing time to see someone like me, for example when they want to move house, or are about to retire. I would happily see you at these times and help out, but often it is wise to make a review when these things are not occurring just to make sure you are in the right place with your finances. It can make a huge difference over a lifetime. Recently many people have been reviewing their pensions. I understand that the statements are easy to tuck away, and most are in language many would not understand, but this is your invested money. A pension review can have a real impact on your retirement income. Often people have several plans which have accumulated over the years. The good thing is that I am able to deal with your pension companies on your behalf, obtaining information and comparing your plans with the ones now available. You could be paying high charges, or languishing in funds which are not performing. At Talk Money we review your funds on an ongoing basis, it’s all part of the service. We also make sure that the risk you are taking is in line with your requirements, this is also monitored for you. All of this ensures that your money will be looked after from the point we arrange a pension for you. If you have investments, the story could be the same. With good intentions you could have invested in a stocks & shares ISA. How is this performing? Has it been reviewed and are you making the most of your tax free investments? Currently you can invest up to £15,000 in a stocks & shares ISA per financial year, many people don’t use this allowance. ISAs are a great way to save for your future as all growth is tax free. Again we can make sure you are invested in the right funds, and review this for you as an ongoing service. Once your finances are in place you can review the values and performance on our online client system, Enable. The system keeps you in touch with your money and allows you access to information and values at all times, for all your plans and in one place.

What about my other plans?

All of your financial products can be reviewed to make sure you are getting the best for your money. You may have direct debits for life or protection policies where you are unsure what the plan covers. This can all be clarified for you. You could be paying for something which is no longer relevant 6

to your situation, or if you arranged the policy directly you could be overpaying. Why pay for something which you don’t actually need?

What to do?

If you would like a simple, independent review of things, please give me a call. I can arrange to see you at home if you need. I am also offering a free initial consultation to Inside Shoreham and Southwick readers. My telephone number is 01273 224667. I would be very happy to help. TRADE TOKENS IN

SHOREHAM AND SOUTHWICK

R

ECENTLY, IN A bid to encourage people to shop locally and to frequent the small shops of their own High Streets, many towns and villages have introduced loyalty cards or their own currency that allows people discounts in return for purchasing goods from certain premises. The store cards issued by supermarkets have a similar function. The idea however is not a new one. Between 1650 and 1950 many tokens were created by businesses to serve in place of the national currency, chiefly because they needed to regularly supply their customers with small change. At the time small national coinage was in short supply so tokens that could be exchanged the next time the company’s wares or services were bought served a useful purpose. In Southwick, Harry Reed, a market gardener, who was operating up until the 1930s produced aluminium tokens with a hole punched into them. These could be used in place of a one-shilling coin when buying fruit and vegetables from his business. Such tokens may have been exchanged in transactions on site or used at locations where the vendor traded such as Brighton market for purchases. Pubs and inns were another business that often issued their own tokens to their clientele. A Shoreham trade token from the 1600s features a griffin as an emblem and the name Richard Glyd but it is not known what line of trade he was in. The token also features the name of the town and the word ‘Sussex’ perhaps to avoid any confusion with its Kent namesake. Shoreham grocer Clayton and Hide’s had tokens issued in the 1800s that bore a design of St. Mary’s Church. Their shop was based in nearby John Street. In the 1900s, Aylings, market gardeners and greengrocers of Shoreham used sixpence tokens, which were small copper coins marked with their name. They had a shop in the High Street and a nursery off Kingston Lane. The Swiss Gardens in Old Shoreham Road first opened in 1838 and attracted day-trippers from afar. The Garden’s own

8

tokens were decorated with hops or flowers. It cost a shilling to visit the Swiss Gardens and it is thought that the tokens were given in exchange for this fee, and could be used against the cost of purchasing food and drink while visiting the many attractions and entertainments of the pleasure grounds. Supplying customers with tokens that could only be spent within the Swiss Gardens, against the entrance fee, was a shrewd business move and one modern day attractions such as fairgrounds and arcades still regularly employ. One of the other main issuers of tokens in our area was the railway company, The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. They issued coins or ‘checks’ to railway workers, including those working at Lancing Carriage Works. For £21,683 2s. and 6d the railway company had purchased sixty-six acres at Lancing and built their carriage repair works there in 1911. From 1919 the workers from Brighton were provided with their own train to the works. Dubbed ‘The Lancing Belle’ it took them to work in the morning and home again in the evening. In 1932 the railway company issued a special token to commemorate the electrification of the line between Shoreham and London. Made of aluminium, on one side it had a design of St. Mary’s church, with its distinctive tower. On the other side is an electric train passing through a tunnel, possibly representing the one at Clayton. The toll bridge over the Adur at Old Shoreham also issued tokens. These were copper and bore the lion and crown from the coat of arms of the Earl of Surrey who had owned the ferry rights to cross the river here. The wooden bridge was built in 1781, replacing the ferry crossing. The tokens excused their owner from paying tolls and were not in wide circulation for the short time that they were issued. From the 7th of December 1970, vehicles were no longer allowed to use the toll bridge and the Shoreham flyover to the north subsequently replaced it. West Sussex County Council took over ownership of the bridge and only allowed cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians to use it. In 1984 it became a Grade 2 listed structure and has since been restored. Judy Upton

PREPARING TO GET INTO GEAR TO GO AND GROW

I

T BEEN A bit of a strange start to the year already with temperatures up into the early teens in the first couple of weeks of January, but still we’ve been battered by the regular storms and plenty of rain. It’s very noticeable with lots of bulbs already appearing and lots of shoots on the way. It will be interesting to see how early any spring bulbs start flowering. It does make you wonder what the coming months have got in store, it’s quite exciting!

10

You’ll probably already have noticed that the days are starting to get longer now, which is always a good sign. It also means that the garden is getting into gear to go. Although still seems a way off, and so does spring for that matter on some days, you really need to start preparing now. There are already summer bubs on the shelves in the garden centers and some can be planted. You can also get a head start by planting some in pots and keeping them in the green house or the kitchen window cill, but not near a radiator. You can also increase your stock of plants by getting out and dividing clumps of yearly flowers, or dividing shrubs. The easiest way is to sharpen the edge of your spade and cut straight down between any plant that you want to divide in the centre of the clump. One part can stay where it is and the other part planted in a new spot. Hey presto, two plants, for the cost of a little effort and not much else. You need to get going in the vegetable garden now if you want to get a good start. Seed potatoes are already on the shelf and can you can start to get these ready by chitting them. Before you start sowing any seeds in trays in the greenhouse, make sure you’ve given it all a good clean out and the trays a wash with warm soapy water to kill off any lurking diseases. They can be easily passed on from last year. Always give anything you plant the best possible start with new compost. If you are trying anything new in the garden, whether it be trying vegetables, planting bulbs, make life easy and follow the planting guides on the label or seed packets. Virtually everything you buy will give an indication of how deep to plant, or what sort of position to put it in. Follow them and you can’t really go wrong. Also try to think ahead as to how large the plant may get in a few years’ time. Just like us, they don’t like being crowded, being cold, or hungry. If you’re going to plant it where it will get crowded out by another plant, then perhaps it’s not the best place, even though it fits there at the moment. Most plants get bigger! This time of year has so much promise and I love losing myself in my small greenhouse for an hour on a dreary afternoon, sowing some seeds or pottering about, just thinking about what they will grow into in the coming months. Give it a go, it really is worth doing Mark Oakley, Any Garden To advertise call: 01273 452065

PHYSIO ADVICE

LET’S TWIST AGAIN! THE RECURRENT ANKLE PROBLEM In this month’s article, we explore the problem sprained ankle, why it happens and what we can do to prevent it happening in future.

What is an ankle sprain and how do they happen?

An ankle sprain is an overstretching of ligaments that supports the ankle joint, through a twisting action, most commonly, with the foot going inwards under the weight of the body, and pain, swelling and bruising occurring in the outside of the foot and ankle.

What are the signs of swelling and bruising?

What is a sprained ankle and how can we prevent it from reoccuring? Local physiotherapist, Louis Jones, writes…

H

AVE YOU EVER twisted your ankle on a pavement curb, or perhaps out running or walking, on a hidden tree root? Ever wondered why after the pain and swelling goes, the ankle is left feeling weak and without any warning you find it giving way time and time again?

If your ankle and foot swells in size then there has been a trauma to the ligamentous and muscular tissues, and lymphatic system, which causes cells and fluid to become stimulated in order for the tissues to be able to repair. Pain is a reaction to the stretching of soft tissue. If you see bruising then this indicates a tearing of ligament or muscle fibres, which then bleeds and usually pools into the inside and outside of the heel and into the toes. A tear is more serious than a sprain, and can take longer to heel.

How long is recovery?

Full recovery usually takes between 6-8 weeks, with caring for the ankle and doing specific rehabilitation. At the onset you should apply the RICE technique (Rest, Ice Compression, Elevation) to help reduce bleeding and swelling in the soft tissues, which can slow heeling and cause more damage.

What can you do to avoid further injury? Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

14

The problem is, most if not all people who sprain or tear their ankle ligaments, once their pain and swelling has disappeared, fail to do two important things: 1. Specific strength work; and 2. Proprioception/Balance. Specific strength work includes using a resistance band to strengthen the muscles around the ankle joint, which helps to protect the ankle ligaments and joint from further damage. Simply walking around on it and going up and down stairs, trying to carry on as normal is not going to cut it I’m afraid. As I’ve learned time and time again from treating clients, their problems persist. Proprioception/Balance work is very important in order to restore strength and feedback back to the ligaments. When you first damage your ankle, the ligaments lose their ability to send the unconscious signal to your brain that your ankle is about to go over, helping your brain recognize when your ankle may be likely to twist, so that you can counteract it before it happens. This is the single most common reason why so many people re-injure themselves. Doing daily balance exercises on single leg, with eyes closed, or practicing balance on a wobble board can make all the difference! If you would like any further information or advice regarding ankle injuries or treatment, please feel free to email me at louisjones.physio@googlemail.com or call me on 01273 467614. ENGLISH LANGUAGE HOMESTAYS

FLYING HIGH English Language Homestays (ELH), the Shoreham based international language school, rise to success is set to continue with its move to new classrooms and offices at Shoreham Airport. The move to the new premises at the end of February gives ELH a long awaited permanent home with lots of classrooms, break out areas and office space to enable the business to continue its rapid growth.

2014 soaring success

2014 was ELH’s most successful year to date, bringing thousands of students from across the World to Sussex for short stays, the over-subscribed summer school and homestay tuition. In total, over 23,000 bed nights were provided with local families in Shoreham, Lancing, Steyning and surrounding areas. Jackie Verrall, MD of ELH, comments: “It was an exciting year that saw the arrival of students from new markets including Japan as well as the launch of TEFL training (Teaching English as a

18

Foreign Language) and FREE English lessons for foreign nationals living in Adur. Both of these will continue in 2015.” The pace hasn’t slowed up in 2015 with bookings for all the school programmes up on last year and with new markets emerging including Russia and Poland. To coincide with the move to the Airport, and provide a new opportunity, ELH has launched a range of Aviation English and industry based courses. Full details at: www.learnenglish1-2-1.com. Aviator House, the new Shoreham Airport location, also adds another string to the ELH bow with the launch of www.roomhireshoreham.co.uk, where you can book rooms for everything from business meetings to yoga classes. Jackie adds: “Aviator House has a lot of classroom and meeting space that we will not be fully utilising and so we are able to offer this high quality, private space available to hire. It is perfect for meetings, training & presentations, local classes and groups, as well as for children’s parties.” www.roomhireshoreham.co.uk
