he popular Shoreham Farmers' market was voted the Best Farmers' Market in Sussex in the 2011/2012 Sussex Food and Drinks Awards on Thursday 26th January at the Amex Stadium. Shoreham was also a winner of the award in 2008/09 and has been a runner up since the formation of the Sussex Food and Drink awards in 2006. David Steadman says: “It is great news that Shoreham Farmers' market is once again a winner in this prestigious event, celebrating local food” The success of Shoreham Farmers' market is its wide variety of local produce, the support of the traders and the hundreds of visitors and shoppers that regularly support the market every month. Many thanks again to all those who have made the market so successful.” Shoreham Farmers' market takes place on the second Saturday of every month in East Street Shoreham 9am to 1pm.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Why is retirement income falling? T
he papers and news have been full of it recently. Annuity rates are falling, pensioners’ income is reducing and people having to work longer. So, why is this happening? How do annuities work and who will this affect? An annuity is a guaranteed income paid to you for life from an insurance company. The annuity would be purchased using the money you have built up in your pension plans during your working life. The insurance company will assess how long they think you will live and will quote the amount of guaranteed income they are willing to pay in return for your lump sum. All pay different rates, and there are various options you can include, so it is important to shop around. If your life expectancy is shorter, for example because you have an illness, the life company may be willing to pay you a higher income. This is because they don’t think they will have to pay you for as long. A large part of the calculation is based on your life expectancy. Fortunately for us all, we are living longer. Unfortunately, this means that the annuity income will be less, simply because the life company will probably have to pay you for longer. Another issue affecting annuity rates is the yield on Government Gilts. The life companies use these yields to calculate the income they will pay, the yields are going down. Longevity and Gilt yields are the main factors affecting annuity rates. If you purchase an annuity now you will receive less than if you had purchased one a few years ago. The European Court of Justice has also ruled that providers must equalise annuity rates for men and women from the end of 2012. Currently, gender has an impact on the income payable, simply because men and women have different life expectancies. From the end of this year, providers will no longer be able to do so, having yet another impact on annuity rates. This will be positive for women taking new annuities, but not so for men.
The attractive aspect of annuities is that the income is guaranteed, something valuable to many people in retirement. The negative is that you can’t change them once you have taken them out. The attractive aspect of annuities is that the income is guaranteed, something valuable to many people in retirement. The negative is that you can’t change them once you have taken them out. So if your situation changes the annuity cannot be altered. For example, for a reduced income from outset you could take a widow’s pension which will continue paying 6
an income to your spouse if you die. If your spouse dies first though, this additional income would be lost. Death benefits are restrictive, so if you die early you may not have received a fair amount of money for the lump sum you have given up. Your health, family situation, other income and aspirations all have a bearing on the right way to set up your retirement income. Annuities are not the only option. You may suit a more flexible way of arranging your pension. For independent advice on any of the above, or if you are approaching retirement and looking at your options please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. Getting ready for Spring W
ell I did warn you that there was still fight left in this winter. What a cold month February has been with very low temperatures and very severe frosts. It just shows that you can never let your guard down in the garden and the weather can change in an instant. Still as we move into March the temperatures are rising and the daylight hours are extending rapidly. Despite the damage the frost may have done to some plants, it will also have done a lot of good, killing off many of the bugs and parasites. It’s also helped with breaking up the soil, making digging a lot easier. When the ground is soft it’s a good chance to get into the beds and get rid of many weeds as possible. If you keep on top of them early on, it stops them spreading and cuts down the work later on. At this time of year there is a mountain of jobs to do, and it’s easy to miss the boat if you’re not careful. Probably the most important is to keep up with seed planting if you are raising vegetables or bedding plants from seeds. It doesn’t matter if you are a couple of weeks late, but try to keep to the time frames on the seed packets to get the best from them. It doesn’t matter if you have a small garden, no greenhouse or even just a balcony. You can still grow seeds and reap the benefits from them. It’s also a very cheap and fun way of providing plants for the garden. When planting seeds always follow
8
the instructions on the packet, especially with regards to the depth you plant the seed at and make sure the seeds have not gone past their sell by date. I always use fresh compost, as it helps to keep diseases to a minimum. It’s also worth mixing in some pearlite or other water retaining additive to help stop the compost drying out. Ensure you label as you plant them as its easy to forget what they are. You may see gardening books full of pictures of expensive pots, propagators and plant labels, but you can achieve the same results very cheaply by planting in old tin cans, toilet roll tubes or practically anything. Put them on a sunny warm window cill ands they will soon start to come to life. As the weather warms the lawn will start putting on a growing spurt. Its time to get the mower out and start looking after the lawn again. Before you start cutting check the mower over and make sure its sharp. Its also worth having a quick check over the lawn to make sure there are no stones, or other obstructions that might have found their way there over winter. Make sure you chose a dry day to do the cut and start off with the mower blade set high and slowly lower during the coming weeks. At this time of year most lawns will benefit from a feed to give them a boost after winter. A lawn is after all a large collection of individual plants that need looking after. It really is a great time of years to get out in the garden, as so much is going on
and there are changes virtually every day, so get out and have a wander around the daffodils. Mark Oakley Any Garden Limited

Life behind the camera Sophie Sheinwald is a photographer based in Hove. We invited her to answer a few questions about her work and get a snapshot of life behind the camera. How did you get started in photography? When I was sixteen I bought my first camera, which became my appendage. I started out photographing portraits of friends, local actors and musicians and got involved with events, it grew from there. What subjects do you like to photograph? I’m totally open as it’s all about how a subject is lit. Also since being a mother, my interest in photographing children has escalated. I love the challenge, as they are predictably unpredictable, toddlers especially! It’s best to make it fun, so they naturally interact, that’s what gets results. I also find it quite a thrill photographing weddings. What does it take to photograph weddings? You have to be very good with crowd control. Wedding party group shots can be a challenge as guests usually flock simultaneously around you snapping away. This of course takes attention away from your subjects. So I’ve mastered polite but direct communication and ask photography enthusiasts to step aside, they can have a quick photo op once I’m done. Bride and groom can be overwhelmed by all the attention, so I always recommend a pre-wedding shoot, so couples are mentally prepared to be photographed on the day.
10
If someone wanted a portrait what could you offer? With such wonderful locations in Sussex, I can create lovely natural shots or I can set-up my portable studio in the comfort of your own home. My most popular deal for clients, is having a disc of high quality post produced images copyright free which are then yours to create products with. I also offer a 10x8 photo shoot story print for just £30 or free with some offers. Tell us about post production. Although time consuming it’s a vital part of my work. I maximise the results of each image in my digital darkroom. I use special techniques to enhance photos to bring out their best. I even take out spots and blemishes out so it’s a bit like a makeover! What drives you to be a photographer? I believe that photography is art and within the realm of aesthetics, beauty. When I photograph I am looking to get the best viewpoints and it’s the results that spur me on. You can contact Sophie on 07976 958654 for her current deals for weddings, portraits and events. See her work at www.sophiesheinwald.com. Special offers are available each month.

MARCH WINDS
M
arch is traditionally known as a windy month. An old verse says ‘March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers, and it is certainly true to say that Shoreham and Southwick have had more than their share of March winds. Gale force winds on 1st March 1901 saw the lifeboat The Henry Harris struggling for over two hours to reach the stricken steamer, The Indiana. When the lifeboatmen finally battled their way to the ship, only the bow and mast were still clear of the water. Of the ship’s crew there was no sign. The Indiana, two hundred and twenty seven feet long, was registered in Hull and had been on route between Swansea and Venice. As the winds died down, the lifeboat returned around 10am, but there were still no sign of survivors. At first it was believed there had been a huge loss of life but it was later discovered that the ship had collided with an oil steamer in fog, and mercifully the crew had been rescued. By this time however, the cargo of the Indiana had started washing ashore on local beaches. Crowds gathered as tens of thousands of lemons and oranges floated in on the tide. People gathered with baskets and even horses and carts, to collect the free booty. Soon fights were breaking out among them. At Shoreham the sea was yellow with bobbing lemons and at Brighton a barrel of wine washed ashore. On the night of the 22nd March 1913 a sudden storm wreaked destruction at Shoreham Beach’s Bungalow Town. Many of the bungalows were still largely constructed from old railway carriages, and with a high tide combined with gale force winds, the sea took fifteen of the bungalows away. Another fifteen bungalows were too badly damaged to be repairable and seven people were forced to spend the night trapped in an isolated dwelling until the tide retreated the next day. It was fortunate that the majority of the buildings were only used as holiday homes and their residents were away, or the storm might have had tragic consequences. In March 1947, a late blizzard brought down telephone lines, and later that month flooding again became a problem for Adur residents. Then on January 7th 1949 in both windy and icy conditions, a gust of eighty miles an hour blew a Southdown
14
bus off of Old Shoreham Bridge (now known as The Old Toll Bridge). Fortunately it was low tide and the crowded bus hit a half-submerged sandbank and rolled onto its side. Nobody was killed and local residents helped to rescue passengers and their belongings. The famous ‘Great Storm’ of October 16th 1987 caused much damage in the Shoreham and Southwick areas when top wind speeds of one hundred and fifteen miles per hour were recorded. The strongest gust of wind recorded countrywide for that night was at Shoreham and measured at 100 knots. It was considered to be the worst storm to affect the South East of England, since November 1703. The area to the East of a line stretching from Southampton to London was the worst affected with coastal towns like Shoreham particularly badly hit. It is estimated that fifteen million trees were uprooted across the region on that single night, and eighteen people died because of the extreme weather. For many Shoreham and Southwick residents, the electricity failed in the night and all woke the next day to witness the extent of the destruction. Fallen trees made most major roads impassable, blocked the coastway and London railway lines as well as crushing a good few cars. Many homes and businesses suffered extensive damage to roofs and lost walls and fences. At St. Nicholas church the lych gate was demolished by a falling tree and a number of planes parked at the airport ended up flipped onto their roofs. At Southlands Hospital a large hut that contained thousands of medical records lost a wall in the storm, but fortunately not a single case note was lost. In the aftermath of this storm, local landmarks Lancing Clump and Cissbury Ring both barely warranted their names as they had lost so many trees. In January 1990 another huge gale blew in, doing damage to many of the same buildings that had been affected by the earlier one, and demolishing more of Adur’s trees. When one of these dramatic events happens we tend to view it at the time as a one-off but as history shows, strong winds have been a feature of our area throughout the years. Judy Upton

Guaranteed Rents a Great Deal for Landlords Following on from a phenomenally successful venture into property leasing in the Brighton & Hove area, Brighton & Hove Council are rolling out this scheme to landlords in the areas bordering the city.
T
he council are keen to recruit landlords with family sized properties which will, for the term of the lease, effectively become council houses. Under this scheme, the council will be responsible for managing the property, allocating to tenants and ensuring your rent is paid each month guaranteed! John Maguire, Brighton & Hove Council’s Manager of Acquisitions explains why he thinks the scheme has been so successful “It’s definitely a question of the guarantees. Every landlord dreads the day he or she will have a void property. The costs of redecorating, re-marketing and then re-finding a tenant not to mention the
ever present fear of squatters is enough to make landlords look twice at our scheme. We can guarantee that landlords will never have to worry about these issues. We’re the tenant and we pay the rent and take the risks of voids, squatters, evictions etc. Local landlord Alfred Haagman has benefitted from both the council’s leasing scheme and its direct lets scheme and said: “In the current climate, certainty is a valuable commodity, and the guarantees which come with leasing are great for my business”. The scheme also guarantees no agency fees, no renewal fees, a free
inventory and checkout service, a free small repairs service and at the end of the lease, the sum of up to two months rent is available for dilapidations. The leasing scheme is open to all landlords with properties which meet the criteria. The council also offer a free tenant matching service which provides tenants with a property damage guarantee as an alternative for landlords who want to manage their own properties hands-on. Essential Oils for Good Sleep, Rest and Relaxation This month Sophie Joseph writes about essential oils to aid restful periods
W
ith us living such busy lives and the temperature still being so cool, we need to conserve our energy and rest well, before spring comes and we start to uncurl and re-energise. Life can be very fast paced so its no wonder that we can so easily become stressed and our energy depleted. I would like to suggest some ways to use essential oils to help you un-wind, release stress and support your body’s energy levels. First and most importantly is to get a good nights sleep, and be able to unwind and release stress that may have built up though the day so that we have a quality, restful sleep. One way to relax at the end of the day is with a foot bath…Fill a wash basin or foot spa with warm water and add one drop each of; Lavender for its ability to refresh and calm the nervous system, Clary sage which is deeply relaxing and sedative whilst sweet orange will help to release any anxieties and stress. Blend the drops with a tablespoon of light oil (carrier oil) such as sunflower, this is to dilute the blend as essential oils should always be diluted before being applied to the skin or added to water. Let your feet soak for 20 minutes and inhale the soothing aromas. The same blend can be added to a bath to soothe achy muscles and tension headaches. Do bear in mind when using oils to relax before bedtime it is best to keep the amount of drops to a minimum, as a stronger blend will be more stimulating to the senses. Lavender oil is a very popular choice when suffering from insomnia, but the key to getting the best result is to use a small quantity of this essential oil, add 1 drop of Lavender to a tissue, rub this onto your pillow then turn the pillow over so you sleep with your face on the other side, the subtle scent will be enough to affect your psyche and help to create more peaceful thoughts and help you drift off. Try some relaxation techniques in the evening rather than watching the television or computer, both of which can stimulate the nervous system. Spend some time with the lights dimmed, burn some candles and use frankincense oil added to a ceramic oil burner. (1-2 drops into the water) Or add a drop to a tissue to inhale. Sit and observe your breathing, just notice the inhalation and exhalation without judgement or trying to change it in any way, watching your thoughts come in and out of your mind but feeling calm and let the day go as you breathe in, think calm and peace, and as you breathe out, imagine any stress leaving you body. Do this for at least 5 minutes of just taking in the deep and powerful aroma of frankincense and your attention on the breath. You will be amazed at how much calmer you can feel after doing this. Sometimes we can push ourselves too hard overworking and losing the work play balance and this can lead to mental and physical exhaustion. Oils such as Bergamot, Geranium and Patchouli can help you to lighten up, stop negative thought patterns and worries, so you can let go of a stressful routine and enjoy yourself . 22
Some essential oils can help support the body’s energy and adrenal glands which can be over worked during times of stress. Try using Ginger, Cedarwood and Juniper for a warming muscle rub. Add a couple of drops of each oil into 2 tablespoons of plain oil such as olive or almond oil and massage into your neck and shoulders, lower back and abdomen or better still get a loved one to massage your back, this will warm and tonify the digestion and kidneys giving them much needed support. Always consult a qualified Aromatherapist when pregnant before using essential oils at home as some are unsuitable. Most importantly when choosing oils let your nose be your guide as those that you prefer will have the most beneficial affect. For more information on essential oil workshops, Aromatherapy treatments or Essential Blend Natural skincare products and facials email Sophie on 01273 462839 or email essentialblends@gmail.com. You are invited to…
Lions Awareness Event – Friday 9th March, 7-9pm. Email: membership@adureastlions.org.uk or phone: 0845 833 7356 for more details
Ordinary people – amazing things Y
our Community needs you. You have probably heard of the Lions Club, the biggest service organisation in the world. They are inviting you to go along and find out more about who they are and what they do. The Lions have been in existence in Adur for over 50 years and has raised thousands of pounds for national and 28
international causes. However, much of their time is spent helping those around us with small things that can make an enormous difference to their lives. Perhaps driving elderly people to a Christmas dinner or a coach trip out with a cream tea, donating money for dressing up clothes to a local playgroup or providing a stair gate to a needy parent
Aside from fund raising they also enjoy a good social scene with various activities ranging from quizzes, theatre trips, skittles and wine tasting to learning to play croquet, a surprisingly fun evening for all who took part. Fund raising can also be fun: they run a Greyhound Charity night once a year and have run the Transport Fayre at Buckingham Park, Shoreham for the last 32 years. Both of these require a lot of organising but are also enjoyable for all involved. Adur East Lions are hoping that some more local people who may have an hour or so to spare every couple of weeks could help them to make a difference to our local community. If you would like to get involved do give them a call. They welcome new faces, whatever age you are and even if you only have a little time to spare Go along and see what they have to offer. You might enjoy being a Lion and find it a rewarding experience. They will be holding an informal information evening (with nibbles) in the Function Room at the Royal George Pub, Upper Shoreham Road (opp. Tescos, Holmbush). To find out more, in a relaxed atmosphere, please contact any of the Lion members below or email for further information to: membership@adureastlions.org.uk
Please telephone Lion Bill Hurren 01903 205962, Lion John Taylor 01273 887339 or Lion Val Roberts 01903 751259 to let them know you are coming along. YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN THEM ON FRIDAY 9th MARCH at the Royal George at 7pm. Adur East Lions Club Charity Trust is a Registered Charity No.1081845. To advertise call: 01273 452065
