SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK
MARCH 2015
Editor’s comment Hello and welcome to the March Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine. The days are getting lighter which is very heartening especially when the weather can be a bit unpredictable. We have had some lovely days in February when the skies have been cloudless and the sun warming. We are of course in the month when we spring forward into a period of blossoming buds, lighter evenings having changed from winter to summer time. This month we celebrate Mothering Sunday on the 15th which is of course a celebration honour of one’s own mum, motherhood. This dates back apparently to the 20th century and its roots lie in North America. We hope you have a wonderful month for March. Don’t forget that the clocks will be going forward on the 29th of March. If you would like to promote any local activities, charity events or if you are a business in the area let us know by the 12th of March. Warm wishes

Pension income drawdown – what is changing?
I
N THE 2014 Budget it was announced by the Chancellor that there would be sweeping reforms in how people may receive their pensions in retirement. The new pension rules will mean that rather than people having to opt for an annuity or a restricted drawdown pension , they will be able to take unlimited income directly from their pension plans, however, there may be tax implications. All of these changes come into effect in April. In fact, the option of taking income from your pension fund has been in place for some time, in the form of drawdown pensions. The idea is that people take 25% of their pension fund initially as tax free cash, with the remaining fund being invested and income being taken directly from the fund. These payments of income are normally limited as the funds would be invested in “Capped Drawdown”. Income is limited to around 150% of the income an annuity would provide in each policy year. These types of drawdown plans are still available until April. Some people have already been able to access another version “Flexible Drawdown”. To be eligible a person would have to be in receipt of guaranteed pension income from other sources, currently £12,000 per annum or more. People invested in these types of plans already have no limit on withdrawals.
of your choosing. Another benefit, drawdown funds are not subject to inheritance tax. So, although the pensions world is becoming more flexible, some people actually take drawdown to leave their funds in place. There are so many options available, it is essential to take independent advice. By doing so you can make sure your retirement arrangements are set up to work specifically for you. If you need any advice on your pension planning, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667, I would be happy to assist..

What happens in April?
From April, the above types of plans are no longer available. A new version comes into effect “flexible access drawdown”. These plans work in a similar way, however, for all investors there will be no cap on income which can be taken. Take caution, however, as after the 25% tax free cash has been taken, any further withdrawals are taxed as income at the marginal rate. This could mean that people could pay up to 45% tax or more and lose the entitlement to a personal allowance if they totally withdraw their pension in one tax year. This is, of course, dependent on the value of their pension fund, and their income situation.

Why would I invest in drawdown?
Rather than taking an annuity, which cannot be altered once taken, you may prefer to have a more flexible arrangement. You may wish to take your tax free cash, but don’t want to take income initially, leaving your remaining fund to continue to grow. You may like the fact that you can leave the remaining fund to your family. From April, if you die before age 75, the total fund can be left tax free to any beneficiary

THE TOOLS FOR AN AMAZING GARDEN
I
’M GLAD TO see the back of February. It pretty much lived up to being the archetypal February, with lots of cold gloomy days, and a lot of cold nights and frosts. The only good thing as we put it behind us, is the days are getting longer and spring is definitely clawing its way in. By now you should be seeing the first dashes of colour as the spring flowers make their appearance As the weather starts to gradually warm up, it’s more of a pleasure to be in the garden and quite amazing what you can
10
achieve in a relatively short time. I often have clients who tell me they don’t know where to begin in the garden. My advice is always simple. Don’t pick off more than you can deal with. Divide the garden down into small areas and tackle each one at a time. It’s much easier and you feel like you have achieved something. Much better than feeling disheartened and giving up halfway through. As with any job, try and use the right tool for the job. Each tool is designed for a specific purpose and they will make the job easier. These days there are a vast array of tools available in the shops at very reasonable costs, or failing that at boot sales. You only need a few basic tools to keep on top of most of the jobs in the garden despite what the shops and websites would have you believe. Try and get the best you can afford, and always buy one that you feel comfortable with. There is no point in trying to use a digging fork that is too large and that you will struggle with. It’s much more effective to use something you can use easily, as you will get more done. Most garden tools get dumped into the shed, garage or left outside after use. Before you do, give them a clean off. Also, most tools will benefit from a bit of care and sharpening before use. A spade with a sharp edge will be so much easier to use and dig with, if the edge is clean and sharp. It only needs rubbing over with a cheap sharpening stone. The same with any other cutting tool like shears, or secateurs. Make your life easier! It’s also worth a little planning in the garden before you do any work. There’s no point doing the work if you are going to suffer the next day with a bad back or an injury. Just a few minutes forethought can make life so much simpler. If you’re moving heavy items, or carting bags of rubbish out, clear a path first. If you need to move heavy stuff get some help. I so often see people struggling with bags full to the brim with soil and rubbish. Get a few more bags and half fill them. Its small things, but it makes life so much easier. Keep what you do simple and in small amounts. It’s a very satisfying feeling looking back at a small bed that has been completely cleared and prepared ready for planting, and it gives you the inspiration to keep going and turn your garden into a wonderful place to be. PHYSIO ADVICE
AVOID THE DOWNS OF CYCLING INJURIES Cycling is now more popular than ever but how can you prevent common injuries? Local physiotherapist, Louis Jones, writes…
T
HERE HAS BEEN quite an explosion of new cyclists on the roads and powering up and down the beautiful South Downs, in the last 2 to 3 years. Cycling has increased in popularity since our success in the London Olympics, with quite an impressive medal winning haul, not to mention how well our British riders have done in the Tour de France. More and more people are ditching their cars, in favour of commuting to and from work, and there are many more Sportive’s being organised around Sussex. My FaceBook feed is constantly full of adverts for events. This month I wanted to focus on common cycling injuries and how we can avoid them.
What are the most common cycling injuries?
The most common injuries associated with cycling are lower back pain, neck pain and knee pain. This is without taking into account injuries that happen due to accidents on the road and off road. Lots of cyclists suffer with neck and back aches and sharp pain in their knees. These 3 areas account for nearly 80% of all injuries related to cycling.
Why do these injuries occur?
Most injuries associated with cycling occur due to poor set up of your bike, such as incorrect size bike frames, incorrect saddle height and position, and incorrect handle bar position. These are the 3 key areas of a bike that you must get right in order to cycle efficiently and to avoid straining your body. When purchasing a new bike, the size of the frame is the most important feature to get right. Most bike shops will offer a “Bike Fit” service to make sure you get the right frame, before parting with large sums of money. Still, you see lots of sellers on eBay, selling bikes that are “too large” or “too small” for them, having spent a small mortgage on the latest carbon frames, and not being able to ride due to injuries. It’s important to get the frame size right, and there are lots of good resources that offer comprehensive advice on the right frame size for you (check out http://www.ebicycles.com/bicycletools/frame-sizer).
What else can we do to avoid injury?
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

There are three areas of a bike that we can adapt to improve our posture, and increase our cycling efficiency. 1. SADDLE HEIGHT AND POSITION: If your saddle is too high, you’re going to increase your risk of getting lateral knee pain, such as Iliotibial band syndrome, which is a sharp pain felt on the outside of the knee, through repetition of pedalling. Get your saddle too low and you’re going to increase the risk of experiencing pain in your knee cap when pedalling against resistance. Having your saddle too far forwards or back can affect your reach on the handle bars, which can increase your chances of developing neck and back pain. 2. HANDLE BARS HEIGHT AND POSITION: Handle bar height will affect your back position and also the amount of tilt you have on your handle bars and gear and brake levers will affect your shoulder and elbow position, which can put strain n your muscles. 3. PEDALS: The third key area is the pedals. Your foot position on your pedals is important because of the potential for your knees to twist inwards or outwards, can have an effect on knee injuries. I would recommend investing in a “Bike Fit” when buying a bike or if you’ve already noticed injuries or discomfort associated from cycling, then having a bike fit, can be beneficial in alleviating pain and unnecessary stresses on your body. If you would like more information on our Bike Fit service, or have any queries related to any cycling injuries, please feel free to contact me on 01273 467614 or email me at louisjones.physio@googlemail.com. PET HEALTH
TO VACCINATE OR NOT?
T
O VACCINATE OR NOT? An occasional challenging consult room conversation is the necessity of vaccination, either driven due to the fear of vaccine related side effects, the reduction in prevalence of the diseases we vaccinate for, or due to people believing it’s just a money making exercise for the vets. Firstly, legitimate vaccine reactions are very low at around 0.05%. An independent study performed by the world famous Animal Health Trust could not find statistical evidence that vaccinated dogs suffered more ill health. When reactions occur, they are generally mild such as a short lived fever, and often these are due to a concomitant illness. Occasionally vets see more serious vaccine reactions like anaphylaxis (not seen in one vet’s 13 year career), tumours forming at the site of the injection or the body’s immune system being tricked into attacking itself. But these are very rare. Vets do see less cases of what they vaccinate for, so the threat is lower, but this is partly due to vaccination being an accepted necessity. (General better health and nutrition of our animals nowadays heavily influences these statistics as well.) But pockets outbreaks of parvovirus and distemper (which is spread dog to dog) are still seen where large numbers of dogs are not protected. An additional component of their routine vaccination protocol is leptospirosis protection, which is ‘caught’ from the environment, as it is spread by rats urine. Thus its prevalence and
threat can not be heavily affected by vaccinating. Plus they can become infected through exposure to their own dogs, so yearly vaccinating is essential. As for vaccinating being a fair income for vets, they would have to agree; the need to vaccinate does add to their footfall but it is during these routine vaccinations that they pick up other unnoticed ailments such as heart murmurs, dental disease, skin tumours etc, and they answer general health and nutritional questions. It is not often that an owner doesn’t get their money’s worth from the consultation. Vaccinating your pet is essential. Please speak to your vet for more advice.

FOOD
HOME-MADE BURGERS Good quality home-made burgers are simple, cheap and delicious. They can be served with chips and buns for a filling main meal or on their own with a salad. Method
Serves 4
600g good quality minced beef 1 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp pepper 1 tbsp vegetable oil 4 burger buns Toppings if desired
In a large bowl gently mix the beef, salt and pepper together. Divide the meat into 4 equal portions. With your hands, gently and lightly shape each portion into a 25mm thick round patty. Press the centre of each to create a small indentation. This will help prevent your hamburgers from bulging in the middle as they cook. Rub oil around a heavy frying pan and then place over medium heat. When the oil is glistening and pan is hot, place the
burgers into the pan indentation side up. Cook until the burgers are browned on the bottom, about 4 minutes. Flip the burgers over and continue to cook for 4 to 5 more minutes or until they are cooked according to your own taste. Place the burgers on the buns and serve as they are or with topping such as sliced cheese, gherkins, mayonnaise, sliced onions, sliced tomatoes, jalapenos, ketchup and/or chilli sauce. WELLBEING
HOBBIES FOR THE NEWLY RETIRED
Martin Howlett

pieces of art. You don’t have to be a millionaire to acquire art, either. Buy small canvases from summer painters who display their work at tourist resorts or even check out exhibitions at local colleges.
Gardening
Gardening is almost always the hobby by default for retired people with time on their hands.
Working nine to five, what a way to make a living. That lyric may ring true for many hard working people, but when it comes to retirement, people can find themselves pottering around aimlessly in search of things to do. So much time, so few hobbies.
L
EARNING TO RELAX and enjoy life can be surprisingly hard for individuals who have been working all their lives. Many haven’t had the time to establish a hobby or creative activity. Newly retired men and women can seem unsettled or even depressed with the excess time on their hands. They are often the ones without a hobby, which could channel their energy and feed their egos in some way. Those who have no hobby at retirement age should not despair. It’s never too late to pick one up.
Art and crafts
Taking an art or crafts class is a favourite pastime. Though it is possible to experiment with painting at home, taking a class will inspire you, improve your skills and may help you make new friends. Actually attending classes also helps to minimise the impact of being home all day every day for perhaps the first time in your life. If you are creatively challenged but love art, you can still indulge your passion by collecting, attending galleries, taking art history courses or taking trips abroad in the search of acquiring
22
This is almost always the hobby by default for retired people who have property with lawns, gardens and trees. If you’re in this boat, choosing an element of gardening that you need to learn more about can provide a new challenge. This may be anything from bonsai gardening to cultivating citrus or fruit trees. Make it a challenge, learn something, and grow something beautiful. Off season can be the time for learning, studying, ordering and plotting for the coming season. Gardening, most people find, provides excellent exercise and the rewards are endless.
Dance
Taking dance classes energise the mind as much as the body. Single or married people can take up anything from line dancing to salsa. Dancing the day away can help you to remain limber and flexible in later years. Besides, doing anything to music can be enlightening and relaxing.

Bird watching
There are more retired bird watchers than you can shake a stick at, particularly the male variety. You don’t have to stalk birds of prey in the woodlands; buying a bird feeder can provide much breakfast entertainment in your back garden. Bird books help the novice or the experienced watcher to identify and understand their feathered friends. Many people enjoy taking group trips or hikes in well known bird watching spots.
Collecting
Whether it’s stamps, salt and pepper shakers, books by a particular author, even first editions, coins, Beanie Babies or antiques of one sort or another, collections can be engrossing, even obsessive. You might want to find new ways to mount or display your collection now that you have more time.
Internet
There’s so much to explore on the internet. You can learn about almost any subject through research on the internet; you can also join chat links, play games, listen to overseas radio programmes, learn languages, study the opinions of others, access pictures, visit virtual art museums, and much more.
