Coastway Vets gives shop to help charity A
former vets’ surgery in Shoreham is now being used to help animals in a different way: Coastway Vets have moved from their premises at 67 High Street and donated use of the shop to The Kit Wilson Trust for Animal Welfare as a charity shop. Funds raised will help pay for the cost of caring for several hundred animals at the Trust’s Animal Rescue Centre near Uckfield, East Sussex. Fundraising Manager, Pat Wilder said “We are very grateful to Tony Cowie of Coastway Vets for this kind gesture as well as their support for the Trust in other ways. It’s especially appreciated at the present time, when many people are finding it difficult to meet the costs of caring for their pets, and an increasing number of cats, dogs and other pets are being brought into the Rescue Centre for care and rehoming.” The Kit Wilson Trust Rescue Centre, established in 1986, covers over 25 acres and has facilities for over 150 cats, 60 dogs and numerous other unwanted pets, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and pet birds. The Trust also has stabling and grazing for

10 horses and several sheep and goats, as well as operating an emergency helpline for wildlife. Many of the cats and dogs are difficult to rehome, as the Centre takes in many who have not been able to find a place at other rescue facilities, such as elderly animals and those with difficult temperaments. Consequently, many are resident for months or even years until the right, permanent home is found. The Trust’s two other shops, in Eastbourne and Uckfield, make a major contribution towards the care of the animals, and Pat is hoping the Shoreham shop will do the same. “We are off to a good start, but we need more goods for sale, more volunteers and even more customers – who will be getting quality goods at reasonable prices, as well as knowing they have helped the animals” The shop is open six days a week, Mon-Fri 9.45 to 4.30, Saturdays 9.45 to 4.00pm. Pat can be contacted by email fundraising.kwt@tiscali.co.uk phone 07432 880315 or call in to the shop during opening hours.
Sarah Raven, gardener, writer and television presenter who lives in Sussex, will be one of the panel of four judges, each with their own area of expertise. Sarah, who recently presented the series ‘Bees, Butterflies & Blooms’ on BBC2 said: ‘I am really excited about this competition. The more people we can get interested and involved in gardening
that has a wildlife focus the better. So many positive and easy-to-do things can be done to make gardens wildlifefriendly and running a competition like this will help raise awareness.’ Visit www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk and click on ‘wildlife information’ then on ‘wildlife gardening’ for more ideas and to enter this free competition. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
The changing face of Mortgage Lending T
he last few years have seen many changes in the mortgage world. Many of these come as a result of the credit crunch. In October 2009, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) conducted a review of the mortgage market, the Mortgage Market Review, or MMR. This intervenes in the policies of lenders who previously decided their own lending practices. It makes a common code and set of rules for lenders to follow. Since then the FSA have been very busy, as we can imagine. Other priorities have taken hold and so much if the implementation has taken some time. This doesn’t mean that lenders have not been preparing. They have gradually been changing their practices and systems ensuring they are ready. So, we are all getting used to the much stricter criteria as time goes on. In fact things have been constantly changing. Some of the changes have been the banning of self cert mortgages and making affordability tests on prospective borrowers. Lenders will be ultimately responsible for checking the ability of someone to pay their mortgage, meaning they will be much more careful in making full checks. Of course, all of this takes time and makes for a much more complicated process. Now, if you want a mortgage be prepared to complete an income and expenditure form. Most lenders now need this as part of their initial checks. No longer can we make a simple calculation of four times your income. The lender will want to know how much you take home each month, and
Finding a mortgage is not as simple as it used to be! will want to see how much you personally spend. People are all different, some hold onto their money whilst others don’t. Be warned a lender may want sight of your bank statement, so ensure your form is completed correctly. All of this is taking some getting used to. People aren’t accustomed to providing so much information, but that is the way the market is leading. Finding a mortgage is not as simple as it used to be! You might be lucky and stumble upon the right lender, but often it is necessary to shop around. Not only is the lending policy important, but also the rate. Do you know which is the best rate for you, or indeed which rates you have to choose from? Listing the rates online may 6
look good, but which lenders are the right ones for you? It is all rather difficult, and more than ever it is important to get the right advice. To avoid disappointment and wasting your time and effort, enlist the advice of an independent financial adviser. They will ask you all of the right questions upfront and do a whole of market search checking lending policy, affordability and rates, finding the right rate for you and your circumstances. If you need advice about mortgages or any other financial matter, please feel free to call me, Claire Cook on 01273 224667. We offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to assist. The exploding colour of May I
did say we would get some rain, so hopefully you’ve managed to recharge your water butts. It’s been a fairly typical April, with showers and fluctuating temperatures. That just underlines the need to be careful with being caught out with late frosts that do untold damage to young tender plants, even in May. This time of year is when we are really just on the point where the garden starts to explode with growth and colour as the warmer longer days start to have a real effect. Of course that also means that there is plenty to keep on top of as well. As the spring flowering shrubs such as Forsythia start to finish flowering, now is the time to prune them back. Not only does it keep them in shape, it also helps the plant give a better show next year. By now the waves of bedding plants are starting to be put in as they fly out of the door of the garden centers. It’s also a good time to get the hanging baskets made up. They do need a lot of watering, so a really good layer of moss around the outside and water retention gel is an absolute must with the hosepipe restrictions. It’s always worth placing a slow release plant food in the baskets as well. When you water them, they only need to be done so they are damp, not as so many do where they cascade water out of the basket. This only removes valuable nutrients form the compost and wastes water.
8
By now the planting in the vegetable garden should be well under way, with many of the seeds such as carrots, spring onions, Swedes and beetroot can be sown. You can also get underway with many of the tender leaf plants such as lettuces and other salad leaves. These are quick growing and can be grown between the slower growing crops such as the carrots and cabbages. Keep an eye on seedlings you have growing. By now they should be well under way. Be ruthless and thin out any congested seed trays, as it will benefit the stronger seedlings. If they look like they need potting on to a larger pot then its well worth doing so. As the month warms, then you can start hardening some of them off by bringing them outside on warmer days, before putting them back inside at night. As well as keeping on top of the weeds in the garden, which will romp away and take over if you leave them to it, its worth keeping an eye on plants that need extra support. Whether you use bamboo canes or metal frames bought from the garden centre is a lot easier to get them in place now, rather than when the plants are to tall, or have already been wrecked by the wind. That pretty much sums up the way to approach May in the garden, as a month where its better to get things done now rather than putting it off, as the garden will leave you behind if you are
not careful, so keep the tasks small and simple and keep one step ahead. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Shoreham Footbridge
Update from Tim Loughton MP
T
his is based on an update on the work provided by project manager Tony Bathmaker from West Sussex County Council at the end of February. I will keep constituents informed as further information comes available. Due to the additional ongoing preparatory work on the bridge following changes made after consultation with local residents a firm start date has not yet been confirmed. However, it is likely that work will commence between May and July. In order to manage expectations and avoid a situation similar to that experienced with the works on East Street, where completion dates were repeatedly given and missed, the actual start date will be confirmed until there is a very high degree of confidence in it. In order to construct the replacement bridge, the northern spans of the existing footbridge (those immediately adjacent to Coronation Green) will be demolished early in the programme. To maintain pedestrian access across the river during the works, a temporary link span will be installed from the most northern
10
remaining part of the footbridge to Coronation Green. In addition, it will be necessary to brace the remaining northern spans of the existing footbridge to provide the required strength and stop the footbridge from collapsing. There are a few possibilities regarding the closure of the footbridge to pedestrians during works. The current programme plans for between 21 & 28 days of footbridge closures during the works. However, these will not be in one long closure but many smaller closures due to public health and safety. There is a risk that, following the demolition of the northern spans and installation of the temporary span, the footbridge will not be safe for pedestrian use. In this instance, the footbridge will have to be closed for the full duration of the remaining works. The council cannot provide a reliable estimate of the level of the risk at this stage, as a decision will be dependent on the outcome of an inspection and survey by a qualified
engineer when the temporary span has been installed. There is an alternative solution to reduce the risk of collapse and that is to change completely the method of working from south to north, focussing work to the north side at the end. Current estimates suggest this would result in a closure of up to 3 months. The project team is doing its utmost to ensure that all closures are planned into the works programme. These will be advertised several weeks in advance using the project web pages, social media, local press (print and radio) as well as notices at appropriate locations in Shoreham. Temporary transport will be provided by a free bus, seating 29 people with room for 17 standing and provision for wheelchairs. These will run from the time of the first train connection from Shoreham to Brighton until the last connection to Shoreham from Brighton (05:30 – 00:30). Pick up and drop off will utilise existing bus infrastructure local to each end of the existing footbridge. The project team will monitor take up and may adjust the number/size of vehicles to suit, if required. Visit: www.timloughton.com (Information correct as of February 2012 and subject to change).

Southdown Sheep at Shoreham
F
rom the 1780s sheep farming on the Downs entered its most popular period. The booming population needed a ready supply of food and clothing, and the rising price of food imports encouraged the country to produce as much of its own meat and corn as possible. It was the time of the rise of large-scale farms whose owners flourished, often to the detriment of smaller farms, which were brought up and their occupants forced to work as labourers for their new masters. The sheep originally found on the western side of the South Downs were an old breed derived from a wild mountain-type common in the West of England, whilst on the eastern side of the Adur Valley, from Shoreham onwards, the Southdown was the only type of sheep present. This original Southdown sheep was a long-legged, slim animal, with a bare speckled head. As the South Downs increasingly became farmed on a commercial level to produce as much meat and wool as it could yield, John Ellman, a tenant farmer at Glynde near Lewes, began to alter and improve the traditional breed of Southdown sheep. Ellman was born in Hartfield in October 17th 1753, but moved with his family to Place Farm at Glynde in 1761. He inherited the farm’s tenancy on his father's death in 1780, and from that point devoted his time to rearing the local Southdown sheep breed. Ellman’s selective breeding of this animal changed it from a tall, lean sheep to a much more squat and compact creature, providing a far bigger mutton yield and a good fleece for wool. As the new Southdown was developed, the sheep gained a fawn/grey-coloured face rather than a speckly one, its legs became shorter, and it gained wool on much of its head and face. This eventually culminated in the breed’s now characteristic ‘teddy bear’ look. From 1791 onwards, Thomas Ellman, a cousin of John Ellman, also began breeding and improving the Southdown sheep at Old Erringham Farm at Shoreham. He too won awards and international acclaim for his work on the breed. By the following decade the Southdown’s range had expanded to cover most of Hampshire, Surrey and Kent. Only Romney Marsh retained its original sheep breed as the ground there was too wet for the Southdowns to thrive. Soon Hertfordshire, Suffolk and Norfolk too were being farmed with Southdowns and the sheep were
12
exported to begin new breeding flocks in American, Australia, New Zealand and South America. John Ellman was introduced to King George III, and even sold two of his Southdown rams to Emperor Paul I of Russia for 300 guineas. In the nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century Southdown sheep grazed in huge numbers on the South Downs. In 1813 agricultural writer Arthur Young estimated that there were 200,000 ewes on the eastern South Downs alone and commented that "the amazing number they keep is one of the most singular circumstances in the sheep husbandry of England". The twentieth century brought the establishment of pedigree recording for sheep. By 1911 there were 359 registered Southdown flocks containing some 114,495 breeding ewes throughout Britain. With the onset of the First World War however, the Southdown flocks declined, as shepherds and farm workers went off to war. By 1922 the 359 pedigree flocks had shrunk to 245. In the 1930s Southdowns were still an every day sight at Shoreham though with the sheep roaming the Downland at Applesham Farm near Coombs. The decline in the popularity of the Southdown breed elsewhere continued however. By 1939 the registered flocks hovered around the 200 mark. The Second World War caused a further blow to Southdown sheep numbers. Much of the Downs was commandeered by the military, and the farms that were left often switched to largely to dairy production to maintain the milk supply. Sheep farming in general continued to decline after the war. It is only now with the designation of the South Downs as a National Park, and the restoration of much arable land to pasture, that sheep have returned here in substantial numbers. However few of these sheep are now Southdowns. From 1945, larger, heavier-wooled sheep like the Leicester and various crossbreeds replaced the Southdown as they were quicker to fatten for the meat industry. The breed has now been placed on a watch list by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. It’s a worrying situation for a sheep breed that was once such a part of the local landscape, was the forefather of all modern downland sheep, and had such a big influence on sheep farming worldwide.
