MAY 2015

Editor’s comment Welcome to the May Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine. With the nice Spring weather we get a couple of Bank Holidays this month to enjoy them, May Day on Monday May 4th followed by Spring Bank Holiday (Whit Monday) on Monday 25th - oh yes, and a General Election in between. We hope you enjoy this month’s issue, we have the latest essay by Judy Upton, a great read on Oyster Fishing. We also have Mark Oakley’s advice on gardening for the coming summer. So far I have managed to cut my grass for the first time and I can see my border plants growing stronger. I’ve even spotted the rhubarb suddenly alive again. So, as you can gather there is a lot to look forward to in the garden in the coming months whether it is al fresco dining, coffee mornings, BBQ’s or just creating a space to relax and enjoy the summer warmth. There is lots for you to read in this months issue and I hope you enjoy looking through this months copy. We do welcome you writing in and sending in your events or activities in the upcoming months. Have a wonderful month Warm wishes

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

New tax year, new opportunities The new tax year often brings changes, but this year even more so than most — so what is going on?

NISA Investments?

We are all now able to invest a further £15,240 into our ISAs, which are now called NISAs. Whether these be cash NISAs, or the stocks and shares version. You are able to invest in one, or the other, or a combination of the two up to the £15,240 limit. A new rule is that you are able to withdraw money out of your cash NISA and reinvest it later on during the tax year, something previously you couldn’t do. You can also transfer cash NISAs to the stocks and shares version. If you have built up a sizeable pot in your cash NISA, it may be worth considering transferring, especially if your rate has decreased and you have sufficient accessible cash elsewhere. A common misconception is that Stocks and Shares NISAs are high risk, not necessarily so; they come in varying risk profiles. It is often the case that you could invest in a low risk portfolio and potentially get a better growth rate than you can achieve in cash, something worth consideration.

75) free of income tax too. Many people in the South East will be liable for IHT due to the value of their homes, perhaps this is a way to leave some money tax free. If you would like to discuss any of the above, or if you need assistance with your pension planning, for independent advice and free initial consultation please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You

What about the new pension rules? The new rules that came into effect on 5th April allow people unlimited access to their pension savings. This is only for pensions which build up a fund, called Money Purchase schemes. Final salary schemes do not offer this facility. If accessing your whole fund sounds too good to be true, then maybe it is. Normally only 25% of your pension fund can be paid to you tax free, the rest will be taxed as if you earned it as income. So, depending on the size of your pension pot, you could end up paying 20%, 40% or even 45% tax on the amount you withdraw. Withdrawing funds from your pension should be undertaken with caution. If you have other sufficient income, perhaps it could work for you, but often it is better to withdraw the fund over several tax years to keep the tax as low as possible. Another interesting point, any funds you leave in your pension will be free of inheritance tax, so if you are over the IHT threshold, is it wise to withdraw money from the pension if you have capital elsewhere you could use? By leaving your fund invested you could leave it to your beneficiaries free of inheritance tax, and in some circumstances (on death before age 6

OYSTER FISHING F

ISHING FOR OYSTERS was once an important industry at Shoreham and it was first recorded as a trade for fishing boats working from the port in 1622. Oysters were dredged from the bottom of the sea, not for pearls, but for their flesh. They were originally harvested by sailing boats, during the oyster season of September until April. Oysters are a shellfish that spawns in the summer and for this reason they were left alone during the warmer months. A huge oyster bed existed opposite Shoreham harbour in 1826, and further beds were discovered in the river Adur itself in 1850. The oyster ships unloaded their haul at the harbour from where local merchants bought them and relocated them to wooden oyster ponds. Here the oysters would be kept alive, washed over by the salt water until they were sent to markets all over England. During the 1850s, nearly 20,000 tons of oysters were sent by rail from Shoreham in one year, to locations as far away as Newcastle. Almost 100 boats sailing out of Shoreham were involved in the trade at this time. In the Crimean War of 1853-6, the boat owners found it hard to continue to find enough crew to keep their boats out dredging for oysters. The war itself had taken a great many men away from the town, and for those sailors who remained, jobs in the merchant fleet now offered higher wages than oyster fishing. Originally the main markets for Shoreham oyster traders were Brighton and London. A map from 1875 shows 60 oyster beds located on both sides of the river Adur in an area stretching up from the harbour, beneath and beyond the Norfolk and railway bridges. It was the opening on the railway in the 1840s that caused a large expansion in the trade, meaning fresh oysters could travel farther more quickly. The Duke of Norfolk successfully claimed a right to the oyster beds in the river and

8

made good money from their exploitation. Meanwhile the population of Southwick grew as more houses were built to accommodate the growing number of men working as oyster dredgers. This boom time for oyster fishing could not last. The industry was becoming too large and unsustainable on a fast dwindling stock of the shellfish. Shoreham fishermen now suffering hardship and poverty wanted permission to dredge for oysters in the month of May, claiming that the oysters found in our waters did not spawn until June. The commissioners governing the industry did not agree and those fishermen who broke the ban had their hauls confiscated by the coastguards and put overboard. As the 18th century wore on, fishermen would have to travel further and further away to gain a decent sized haul. Soon Shoreham was reliant on oysters that were found living in oyster beds on the sea floor roughly at the midpoint between the English and French coasts. They covered an area that was only about twenty miles in length and seven or eight in breadth. In 1890 it is recorded that the Brazier Brothers were paying ÂŁ1 a year rent for oyster beds in Shoreham harbour. As the oyster boats had to travel over wider areas to find oysters their size increased from 20 to 27 tons, but now other ports, which could accommodate larger steam powered vessels began to take over the trade. The demand for oysters was also starting to fall as fashions in food changed. Only two oyster merchants, one in Shoreham and one in Southwick still existed by 1905 and by 1909 the industry was about to cease for good. The steam dredgers used to clear the harbour also made the area unsuitable for oyster fishing. Up until the 1930s the disused wooden frames of the Shoreham oyster ponds were still visible along the river Adur at High Tide. Judy Upton

Attending the pond, flowers and vegetables I T’S STARTING TO feel more like spring should, with the temperatures rising and the evenings getting longer, after a slow cold start to the spring. We’ve past the daffodils and with tulips and other late spring flowers blooming, we are well on our way to what will hopefully be a long summer Many gardens have ponds in them and at this time of year they need a bit of attention to help keep them at their best

10

and also to help look after the wildlife in and around the pond. Many of the visitors such as frogs and toads will be of great benefit to controlling pests in the garden. If the pond has a pump in it, then now is a good time to fish it out and clean the filter on it. Also if there is a separate filter box, then this should be cleaned out. The best way is to use a bucket of pond water to squeeze the filter sponges out in, before re-installing them. If your filter has a UV light then its good practice to change the bulb for the new season. Aquatic planting is also of great benefit to the eco-system of the pond, and now is a good time to get rid or cut back any plants that are taking over and to plant new ones. Remember to use aquatic compost if you do, as normal compost is too rich for the pond balance. If the pond is particularly silted up and dirty it may benefit from a professional clean. As everything starts to shoot into full throttle, it’s a good idea to keep on top of feeding the various plants. Get plenty of compost into your beds to help with any new planting you are carrying out. Also as spring flowers such as daffodils start to die back, give them a good few liquid feeds, to help get more energy into the bulbs for next year to ensure good flowers. As your climbers start to shoot up to the sky, keep them tidy, removing any unwanted shoots and tying them to supports or trellis, to make sure they go where you want them! In the vegetable garden, you should be staring to see some evidence of growth from those early plantings of potatoes and seeds. Thin out seedlings as they start to appear. It always seems hard to remove them as it feels so wasteful, but it is better to have a good plant, producing well, than two mediocre plants, battling for water and nutrients and under cropping. The potato plants should be starting to show themselves so don’t forget to earth up around their bases to keep any potatoes shielded from the light as they grow. You can start getting in your runner bean seeds now, as well as continuing with sowings of most vegetables to ensure a good even crop through the summer. It’s also a good idea to give any strawberry plants a feed of potash to help spur them on. It won’t be long now until the first fruits of your labour are ready for eating. As I said, roll on summer and the strawberries! Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited To advertise call: 01273 452065

What are the most common injuries?

You can do it, but ‘don’t’ put your back into it! So it’s that time of year again, when suddenly the lawn seems overgrown and out of control. Time to get the lawn mower out and the garden sheers. This month Louis Jones talks about common injuries associated with gardening and how to avoid them.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

1. Lower Back – With all that bending, lifting and twisting required to pick up plants, heavy bags of soil and carrying a wheel barrow, not to mention bending over to pot plants, cutting the hedge, tidying up the edges of the lawn, its little wonder we get problems with our backs. There is an increased pressure on the vertebral discs when doing bending and lifting activities and care should be taken to avoid injury. 2. Knees – Garden Activities such as kneeling, and constant squatting movements, puts our knees under a lot of strain. “Housemaids knee” or patellar bursitis is a common condition associated with kneeling activities. 3. Wrists – Small repetitive, gripping and twisting movements with pruners, garden sheers etc. puts our wrists in a vulnerable position to pick up tendon injuries of the wrists and hands. 4. Shoulders and Necks – Reaching activities overhead, such as strimming hedges, picking fruit from branches and clipping back tall plants, can put the neck and shoulders under stress. Rotator cuff injuries and shoulder impingement is another common injury linked to overhead movements of the arms and looking up.

How can we avoid these problems?

• Firstly we can avoid injuring our lower backs and causing damage to the discs and muscles by learning to bend properly and safely. To bend correctly, we should maintain a straight/neutral lower back, and bend from our hips and knees only. • Make sure to assess how heavy and object is before attempting to lift it. If it’s very heavy can the load be broken down into smaller more manageable loads, or can the activity be shared between 2 people rather than performed on your own? • If you are on your own, can you make more frequent, lighter trips when carrying or lifting? • A soft pad such as a cushion should be used if kneeling is required, in order to alleviate pressure on the knees. • You should never sit back onto your heels, which forces | the knees into extreme flexion. Try kneeling upright or placing a second cushion between the heels and your bottom. • Elbow and wrist straps may be needed if you suffer from repetitive strain type injuries from gripping and cutting activities, or in order to avoid them. • Try to avoid lots of repetitive reaching activities by using a step ladder, if it is safe to do so, for example there is a flat stable surface, and your step ladder is secure. • One other point worth noting is protective goggles may be necessary to protect the eyes, when using garden machinery. Remember to take precautions and be safe. For the purpose of this article I have not mentioned the dangers of using machinery, but it is assumed that proper steps are taken and risks are assessed adequately. Enjoy the up coming summer season. If there are any issues related to this article or if you have any questions related to any injuries you may have, please feel free to email me at louisjones.physio@googlemail.com or telephone me on 01273 467614. MORE GRANT FUNDING SUCCESS FOR ADUR AND WORTHING

Residents across Adur and Worthing will soon be offered the chance of gaining rewards to use in leisure facilities and Worthing Theatres, thanks to a £136,000 grant from the Department for Communities and Local Government. The grant is to be shared by both Councils and will be split over the year coinciding with dates the scheme will be running, 2015-2016. After realising that sending recyclable waste to landfill is expensive and damaging to the environment, the Government decided to work with local authorities and support initiatives that recognise and reward those who reduce, reuse and recycle their waste. The Government grant will enable Adur & Worthing Councils to work in partnership on an initiative in which the 65,000 households within these areas will be in with a chance of winning leisure vouchers and prizes. Keith Dollemore, Executive Member for the Environment at Adur District Council, said: “As a seaside authority Adur is firmly committed to the principle

of offering weekly refuse and fortnightly recycling collections. On behalf of the Council, I feel that this enables us to maintain a clean and safe environment as well as meeting the needs and desires of our local residents. The grant will be put towards funding our Recycling reward scheme known as Total Quality Recycling.” The project aims to encourage a better quality and higher volume of recycling throughout Adur and Worthing, with the goal of reducing contamination, the amount of waste sent to landfill and making communities and individuals more aware of how recycling can make a positive change. The project also corresponds with the increase of plastic materials deemed recyclable by Adur & Worthing Councils, as of Wednesday 1st April 2015 plastic tubs, pots and trays will be accepted providing they are washed and dried first. It’s projected this change alone will see recycling levels increase by 4000 tonnes per year, pushing West Sussex’s recycling rates to over 40%.
