GUITARS ON THE BEACH
BRIDGE GLASS PANELS TO BE REPLACED
Playing the guitar is a hard enough at the best of times so why not share the frustration and joy with others? Lisa Fitzgerald and Tim Lavender thought it would be fun to gather together a group of guitarists who could develop their skills by playing together and exploring a combined enthusiasm for all things guitar. Local guitar virtuoso Richard Durrant was equally enthused when the idea was mentioned to him and Guitars on the Beach was born. Ray Reddick joined Lisa, Tim and Richard as secretary and the group has now grown to twenty members who meet at the Ropetackle Arts Centre for three hours on the first Saturday of the month (excluding July and August) and is led by either Richard or Lisa. The sessions are varied with something interesting and suitable for every level of guitarist. There will be a Guitars on the Beach event on Saturday, 11th July at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Shoreham Beach. This will include an afternoon talk on all things guitar in the church hall and an evening concert, in the church, starting at 7pm. The concert will be played by members of GOTB plus guests , and a set from GOTB patron Richard Durrant. Full details will be available on www.guitarsonthebeach.org nearer the time. So if you’re thinking of dusting off a guitar that’s been laying idle and unloved for years, or thinking of learning to play from scratch, but need an extra incentive, come along on the 11th to meet like minded people and find out more about the guitar. Membership of Guitars on the Beach is £12 per session payable monthly by Direct Debit (£10 per month over 12 months). All members have access to the special area on the GOTB website which contains music, manuscripts and video. For details go to the Guitars on the Beach website: Guitarsonthebeach.org or contact Ray on 01273 465302.
About 150 glass panels are to be replaced on the Adur Ferry Bridge following cracks appearing on a small number of glass panels last year. West Sussex County Council’s contractor Osborne’s has decided to replace a number of the panels as a safety precaution. Osborne’s will be carrying out the work during July and early August. This does not require any additional bridge closure and disruption to people using the bridge will be kept to a minimum. County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, John O’Brien, said: “It is important that these precautionary measures are taken now, which will help ensure the safe future of this wonderful community asset. People will still be able to safely use the bridge as normal while the work is going on.” Osborne Delivery Director Derek Thornhill said: “Whilst we are confident that the existing glass panels are safe, we have taken the decision to replace a small number of them as a precautionary measure.” Before the panels get replaced, the Adur Ferry Bridge will close to the public for an inspection. The closure will be in place from June 1 to June 30, between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday. The bridge is reopening at weekends to support a number of events in the Shoreham-By-Sea area during June. It will open as normal on: Saturday, June 6 – Sunday, June 7 for Wild Life Festival, Shoreham Airport and Shoreham Fort Military History Weekend; Saturday, June 13 – Sunday, June 14 for Adur Festival’s Art Trail; and Saturday, June 20 – Sunday, June 21 for Beach Dreams Festival, Shoreham Beach. Whenever the bridge is closed, a free shuttle bus service will be operating every 15 minutes from both sides of the River Adur.
ROPETACKLE FILM CLUB
Wick Theatre Company presents Daisy Pulls It Off: 24 to 27 June. Set in 1927, this is a riotous and affectionate parody of the classic girls’ adventure story. The plot centres on super achiever Daisy Meredith, the first scholarship pupil from an elementary school to be allowed access to the hallowed halls of Grangewood School for Young Ladies. Daisy finds herself struggling fearlessly to be accepted against unutterable snobs Sybil and Monica and their frightful schemes to get her expelled. With her new best friend, mad cap Trixie Martin, Daisy finds herself caught up in a series of harum scarum adventures including the search for missing treasure. Can they work out the elusive clues and save the school from closure? Or will they be beaten by the mysterious Mr Scoblowski? Daisy Pulls It Off was a huge West End hit and won the Olivier and Drama Theatre Awards for Best Comedy. The play celebrates, with a sly wit and a big heart, an arguably sweeter, more innocent era. Contact The Barn Theatre box office on 01273 597094. Tickets are £11 and performances at 7.45pm.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Financial Advice — a new perspective
I
F YOU HAVE taken financial advice in the past, you may have used an adviser who recommended a product, you invested, then you never saw him or her again. This was typical of how some advisers worked, this is because they were paid to arrange the policy for you, not to keep an eye on it and ensure it continued to meet your needs. The result has been that many people have accumulated pensions and investments over the years and nobody is really looking after them. In the old days, before scanning, advisers kept paper files. You can imagine that it was difficult to get information on clients quickly or to find clients invested in areas which needed to be reviewed. Unless advisers made a special diary note for their clients, many advisers’ systems did not support regular reviews. Even individual clients sometimes found it difficult to keep track of their own policies; often receiving paperwork from many different companies, trying to understand it, monitor it, and file it. Many are still in this situation.
What has changed?
online into your client file and get up to date values, updated as often as you wish. If you haven’t seen an adviser for a while, perhaps now is the time to do so. Bring your finances into the 21st century, and deal with an award winning IFA company. For a full review, and a free initial consultation, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. Talk Money is a trading style of Aspect 8 Ltd, which is an appointed representative of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the amount invested.
Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
Firstly, advisers are no longer paid ‘commission’ from products they arrange. They may charge an agreed upfront fee (in some cases this can come from the contract if you prefer). The initial fee is sometimes lower than before, with the adviser then being paid a regular agreed amount for actually looking after your money. Making reviews, and changing your investment or funds as necessary. The idea is that advisers’ income should not be dependent on selling policies, instead it is from taking a long term view and actually advising and managing your money on an ongoing basis.
Winning awards!
At Talk Money, we pride ourselves on being part of Aspect 8. An IFA company based in North Street, we have won many accolades including the South East’s Adviser Firm of the Year 2014, awarded by Professional Adviser. This is largely due to our high standards, client and portfolio management systems. Everything is scanned and we can get clear information about your finances at the touch of a button. This allows us to put a clear and ongoing plan in place for you, and to manage it. You may feel out of touch with how things are going with your money, not any more, you can sign in

KAYSER BONDOR AT SOUTHWICK
F
ORMED IN 1928, as the Full Fashioned Hosiery Company of Baldock in Hertfordshire, the hosiery and lingerie-manufacturing firm Kayser Bondor opened their Southwick premises in 1951. Since 1949 the firm had already been operating a similar factory in Portslade. The Southwick factory too was created to produce brassieres and foundation garments for sale at home and abroad. Other garments including hosiery (stockings and tights), lingerie housecoats and female nightwear were made at the company’s other factories elsewhere in the country. The Portslade factory was originally on the top floor of a building that had once been a school. Portslade was chosen when the chairman was visiting his mother in Hove and read in the ‘Brighton and Hove Gazette’ how many industrial jobs were being created in Wales and Scotland rather than the South of England. Phoning Brighton Labour Exchange he asked them to find him two hundred young women to employ as machinists and to locate a factory space they could occupy. In 1957 the Portslade building was completely rebuilt and reopened by the ballerina Dame Alicia Markova on 9th October. This new, purpose-built factory had floor space of 38,000 square feet and employed five hundred people. The front of the new building was made of glass allowing those working within to work by natural light and there was a canteen capable of seating two hundred people in a single shift. Along with the Southwick factory, it was now producing 50,000 bras and foundation garments such as corsets and panty girdles a week. Another factory making foundation garments was built in Worthing in the early 1960s, and local schools now saw the company as one of the area’s major employers of their leavers. Kayser Bondor not only employed machinists to sew the products, but also cutters, pressers and finishers as well as those working in the dispatch department. The majority of staff were women but they did employ a good number of men too. At Portslade they trained young designers to create future lines
8
for the company. A seventeen-year-old machinist who started work in Portslade in 1949 was paid to attend Brighton Technical College and later became one of the firm’s main designers. Kayser Bondor tried to promote a happy family atmosphere among its employees and there became a tradition of girls following their mothers and older sisters into the company. By the early 1960s the company had nearly two hundred hosiery and underwear shops of its own throughout the country as well as numerous department store concessions. A plain cotton brassiere known as ‘Style 100’ was the first to be manufactured at Portslade. ‘Style 177’, also called the ‘Young Star’ with its broderie anglaise half cup became the firm’s most popular line for many years and was also made here. The Kayser Bondor factories had their own sports clubs and social facilities. In 1958 the firm sponsored the first ‘Kayser Bondor Women’s National Golf Tournament’ The Portslade factory had a Tuppenny Club where workers donated 2d from their weekly wage to a fund which at Christmas gave a donation to widows and pensioners living in the area. Brighton and Hove Girls Orphanage was also the recipient of the employees’ generosity, receiving tickets to the pantomime. At the Southwick factory in 1960, employees took part in a Christmas competition for the best decorated bench, the victors winning with an ‘Andy Capp’ theme. By 1968, all foundation garment designing took place at Portslade and Kayser Bondor took over the Formfit factory in the town in order to expand their contract work including supplying the Evans shop chain. By the 1970s Kayser Bondor was making much of the underwear for Marks and Spencer, as famously worn by Mrs Thatcher. The small Southwick factory unfortunately did not survive to see this boom in trade however, closing in 1972. By then, Kayser Bondor had become increasingly reliant on a few large contracts, chiefly its Marks and Spencer’s’ one. When that retail chain dropped its buying British policy, the supplying firm was struck a severe blow and one from which it would not ultimately recover. In 1978 Kayser Bondor closed its last factory, and sadly today most mass-produced, affordable hosiery, brassiere and other garments are made overseas. Judy Upton

From greenhouse to garden
I
T WAS A bit below average during May with the temperature and it is noticeable in the speed of growth of many of the plants, but hopefully things will start to pick up now as we enter the warmer weather, well fingers crossed anyway! We should now be past the risk of frost and so it should be
12
safe to start moving tender young plants from the greenhouse and plant them out. Don’t forget to harden them off first by leaving them out during the day and putting them back in over night before finally planting them. On the other side of the coin, if we do start getting really hot days, then make sure the greenhouse has enough ventilation, and a good trick to help keep the temperature down is too wet the floor in the morning. Now is the time, when you win or lose the battle with the weeds. It seems they sprint off well before any seedlings you have planted and are 2 feet tall before you have turned your back. The easiest way to get rid of them is to use a hoe, especially while the ground is dry. Few weeds will survive once they have been regularly hoe’d. It’s a lot easier and quicker to do this now then spend hours once they have taken hold. Not only that they will have had time to spread their seeds and so you will have created a legacy of work for next year. A short way behind the weeds are the plants you want, putting on lots of growth and making an enormous effort to produce a wonderful display. Give them a real helping hand by regularly feeding them. I find liquid feeds tend to be better. They have a quicker result, being taken up by the plants root system, although the effects are more short term, so you need to repeat it regularly. But then it’s a nice excuse to stroll around the garden with a watering can on a warm evening It really is that time of year when everything starts to come into its own and the garden starts to erupt in colour. It’s easy to forget in the winter months when you’re working out a new plan or moving shrubs, what worked well, or what didn’t. It’s never a bad idea to take some photos of the garden in full bloom, as a nice keepsake, but also as a valuable reference for next year, in case the memory plays tricks. That’s the thing with gardening, it changes and evolves over the seasons, but if you’re not careful, you can be so busy doing work in the garden, looking ahead, that you miss the wonderful displays that you’ve strived so hard to create, so do take time just to sit back and enjoy it. Some of the sights and smells are really only with us for such a short time, it’s a shame to miss them. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited To advertise call: 01273 452065

Flying Fit! Summer is almost here and lots of us are booking our flights abroad or have already done so. Louis Jones says although holidays are very exciting, for some, the thought of sitting on a long flight, potentially feeling quite cramped for the tall people amongst us, or generally feeling tight and stiff from the lack of movement can be a worry.
T
HIS MONTH WE focus on some useful exercises and tips to practice onboard your flight to help ease those stiff achy joints, as well as reducing your risks of DVT (deep vein thrombosis). 1. TIP-TOES. Sitting upright in your seat, start with your feet flat with your knees hip width apart and your feet directly under your knees. Lift your heels, so that only the balls of your feet remain on the floor. Hold this position for 5 seconds and repeat this 10 times. GOOD FOR: helping to improve the circulation in your legs, and reducing your risks of DVT, by using the calf muscles to pump blood from your feet back up your legs. 2. TOE-TAPS. Raise your toes up as far from the floor, keeping

your heels in contact. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10 times. GOOD FOR: helping pump blood towards your heart, to prevent swelling in the ankles and to keep the ankles mobile. 3. LEG STRETCHES. Stretch one leg out straight under the seat in front of you and circle the ankle 15 times clockwise and 15 times anticlockwise. Repeat with the other leg. GOOD FOR: preventing your knees from getting stiff and good for circulation and ankle mobility. Also good for contracting the thigh muscles, when holding the leg out in front of you. 4. SHOULDER STRETCHES. Sitting upright in your seat, raise both arms directly above you, and holding one elbow, pull one arm back so that the hand drops behind your neck. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat each arm 5 times. GOOD FOR: stretching your spine out and stretching tight chest and shoulder muscles, that affect breathing and posture. 5. ABDOMINAL CONTRACTIONS. Whilst sitting, contracting your stomach muscles and holding them for 5 seconds can be a great ay of exercising without having to move. GOOD FOR: strengthening and toning your muscles and for improving control over your urge to go to the toilet. 6. WALKING. If you have the opportunity to leave your seat, take the time to walk around to allow you to stretch your spine and increase circulation and shake stiffness from your legs. If there is space and a quiet enough area, practice going onto tip-toes and reach up above your head to strength your whole body. 7. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. Drinking lots of water is great to stay hydrated and feel less tired when travelling on long flights. 8. WEAR FLIGHT COMPRESSION SOCKS. These aid recovery of muscles and improve circulation. You can go one better than flight socks and wear full leg compression tights if your very eager. I wore them once on a flight to America and my legs felt absolutely brilliant after the journey. You can do these exercises as often as you like, throughout your flight, but every one hour will be sufficient. Some airlines may have inflight magazines or videos with exercises, which you can follow if there are others that suits you better. Wishing you all a pleasant journey! PARTY HOT TUBS FOR HIRE
S
HOREHAM-BASED COUPLE TIM and Cathy have recently launched a new business offering luxurious portable hot tubs for hire in the Sussex area. They have invested in high quality hot tubs supplied by the Canadian Spa Company and they will deliver and install them in your back garden, patio or decking. They offer two different models comfortably holding up to six adults or eight children. Both are solid wall (not inflatable) and both provide massage bubbles at the touch of a button. The tubs take about 30 minutes to set up, 2-3 hours to fill up and between 12 and 20 hours to heat up to 38 degrees. Their prices are pitched at an extremely competitive level ,which includes delivery and all necessary chemicals. Tim commented, “we pride ourselves on giving an unrivalled and personal service — for example, when we collect the tub,
22
we pump out the water into the nearest drain as opposed to just dumping 1,500 litres of water onto the lawn or decking as other firms do. “We have been so overwhelmed by the level of interest that we have ordered two additional hot tubs in the last two weeks. We have already had many happy customers who have given us fabulous testimonials.” The beauty of this service is that anyone can have a little bit of luxury for a long weekend at a very affordable price (from £150 to £180 inclusive). All they need is a flat area of 7” by 7”, a hose pipe and an ordinary domestic power point within 10 metres or so. Visit their facebook page (party hot tubs for hire in sussex) or the website at www.partyhottubs.co.uk or call: 07979 746319 or 07510 541576 for more information or to book.

Beach Dreams is Shoreham Beach’s longest standing FREE community festival. The festival is now in its 16th year. On the Saturday 20th June, the Children’s parade will kick start the Beach Dreams Festival. The parade will start from Shoreham Beach School at 10.45am and 11.15 am at the Church of the Good Shepherd - there will be samba band, stilt walkers and many more accompanying the parade. This year the Beach Dreams is “The Circus”. Beach Dreams runs over a full weekend in June including a traditional Children’s Party and Family Disco on the Friday night. Both Saturday and Sunday play host to the best in local entertainment with each year holding its own theme. There are activities for all the family to get involved in and with a vast array of food and drink, nobody goes hungry or thirsty either! The main event of the weekend is the Beach Dreams Main Stage which sees local bands and artists display the very best in original live music. Thousands of locals now book the weekend out in their diaries to come down and enjoy everything the festival has to offer. Head down to Shoreham’s Beach Green from 19th - 21st June 2015 to see what all the fuss is about!

SWEATY FEET HIS MONTH WE
T
are looking at and discussing the most weather appropriate issue of sweaty feet (Hyperhidrosis). Most of us have suffered from foot perspiration and odour from time to time, yet for some people, sweaty feet are a persistent problem which can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. There are more sweat glands per inch in our feet than anywhere else in the body so it’s not surprising that this can cause foot problems such as foot odour and a greater risk of minor skin infections, through athlete’s foot, or blisters. Hot weather can make matters worse, although sweaty feet is a winter, as well as a summer, problem. It can also be an inherited condition or caused through hormonal changes. If you are suffering with sweaty feet and their effects, why not make an appointment with Karen Burrett or Gaynor Platt, our podiatrists, here at the First Foot Clinic, Shorehamby-Sea, contact us on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www. firstfootclinic.co.uk
