Chocolate Box Theatre

Three Brighton-based musical theatre professionals, Emma Edwards, Nathan Potter and Simon Gray, have teamed up to form CHOCOLATE BOX THEATRE, a company dedicated to presenting BIG musical productions in small spaces. Their first presentation is Stephen Sondheim’s brilliant musical INTO THE WOODS which will be performed at the Marlborough Theatre at the end of July. Emma Edwards (Director) has appeared in many touring and West End musicals including covering and playing Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard and Madam Giry in Phantom of the Opera. Nathan Potter (choreographer) has appeared with the RSC in the Wizard of Oz with Imelda Staunton and on tour in Cats and Seussical the Musical. Simon Gray (musical director) has conducted many operas and musicals on tour and in the West End including Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Prince of Wales Theatre), Treasure Island (Mermaid Theatre), The Hobbit (Queens Theatre), and Madama Butterfly (Queen Elizabeth Hall). All three have also worked locally with Brighton based companies. INTO THE WOODS is a modern take on classic fairy tales that begins as a lively irreverent fantasy and becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children. When a baker and his wife learn they have been cursed with childlessness by the witch next door, they embark on a quest to break the spell, teaming up with an ambivalent Cinderella, a Prince Charming with a roving eye and a blood thirsty Red Riding Hood along the way! The cast of 17 includes Brighton-based professional actor/singers alongside some of the very best local non-professional performers. Performances at the Marlborough Theatre are from Tuesday 24th – Sunday 29th July at 7.30pm. Tickets are £15.00 and are available from www. brownpapertickets.com/event/244350

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Pensions – make the most of what you have T

he papers are full of it right now. Pension income is falling, people aren’t saving for retirement and benefits are being reduced. A major reason is our aging population. The good news is that we are living longer, but this means more of our population are of retirement age. Now, and more so in the future the earning public will not be able to fund the state pension. This is why pension ages are increasing. Women who used to retire at age 60 are expected to work until age 65. This is being introduced gradually, any woman born after 6th April 1950 being affected. Then, the age 65 is being increased to age 67 for both men and women. The government has tried to encourage us to save for retirement by offering tax relief on pension contributions; this has worked for some, but not for enough. Times are hard and there are often other priorities. So, the encouragement will become more evident from October of this year. The government is introducing “NEST”. This is a scheme whereby all employers will have to set up a scheme and automatically enrol employees. Both will have to make a contribution as a percentage of salary. The employee will have the option to opt out. Larger employers are first, moving down to smaller employers in the future. It is clear that the government means business in making us all provide for our own retirement.

health problems. Otherwise your provider will give the best income, or there may be guarantees you wouldn’t find elsewhere, in which case it may be best to stay where you are. The point is, without taking independent advice how do you know you are getting the best from your hard earned pension? For independent advice on any of the issues above. If you have pension money invested or you are nearing retirement and need to look at your options, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be happy to help. Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You

What can we do? During your working life: Make sure your pensions are invested in the right place. Performance and charges can vary widely amongst providers. Take some independent advice and make sure you make the most of what you already have; this doesn’t necessarily mean making additional contributions. Make the most of your current fund by being invested in the right place. When you retire: Make sure you look at all your options, don’t just take the income offered by your current provider. There are many options available for taking your retirement income. All suit different circumstances. You could seriously impede your retirement income by not taking advice at this crucial stage. There are several different types of arrangements all with differing rules. Sometimes transferring to a different type of arrangement can be beneficial perhaps giving you higher tax free cash, or different death benefits. You could find that other providers may offer a higher income. This can especially be the case if you have any 6

Plenty of gardening to do J

une is on its way out and the longest day is now past us, so as we enjoy the summer weather (hopefully!) the plants in the garden are already starting their slow wind down as the sunlight, so vital for their vigorous growth is on the decline. Still there’s plenty of time for us to get the most out of everything. Last month saw some exceptionally high winds and although out of character it just goes to show what damage can be wrought in one day in the garden. A lot of plants suffered severe wind burn from the strong drying winds, and those that weren’t supported properly suffered from wind damage as well. Most will recover but it underlines the need to be prepared in the garden, especially with supports for taller plants. We always receive a deluge of phone calls after strong winds for fence repairs, and more often than not it is to replace the fencing panels and 3 inch posts. If you do suffer damage or are thinking of replacing your fence, I would always recommend going for a sturdier closeboard fence. It is not much more expensive and it will last a lot longer. As most plants in the garden will be romping away in the height of the growing season, it’s well worth giving them an extra boost to keep them healthy and happy. Most plants whether they are flowers or vegetables, will benefit from a liquid feed. These are inexpensive and are simply mixed in with 8

water in the watering can. They will give them a fast acting feed. This is especially needed with plants in containers, as they will exhaust the supply of nutrients in the compost. A good example of this is a vine which has been in a container for 4 years in my garden and has sat and done nothing. This year I put I finally got around to putting it into a bigger pot with fresh compost. It’s three times the size and still growing very happily, so it’s always a worth while exercise. Thinking ahead in the garden, it’s a good time to collect seeds from your favourite flowers as blooms die off, or take cuttings to produce more plants. Its fairly easy to do either and an inexpensive way to produce extra plants. It’s also very satisfying. If you collect the seeds dry them off and keep them in a cool dry container such as an envelope. Make sure you label them! One of the easiest and quickest cuttings to take is a tomato plant. Simply cut off a healthy branch from the plant and immerse the end in a jar of water. Within a week to ten days it will have produced sufficient roots to enable it to be planted in the ground giving a free plant. Not all cuttings are quite so simple and its worth doing a little reading up before having a go, but its still worth the effort. So as well as the usual jobs of weeding, tidying and lawn mowing there’s always something a little more adventurous you can try. As with anything in the garden it’s all trial and

error and if it doesn’t work, don’t be disheartened, try again, it’s always worth a go. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Esther Waters T

he novelist George Moore was born on February 24th, 1852, son of an MP and landowner at Moore Hall, County Mayo, Ireland. In 1868, the family moved to London. George Moore’s most famous novel ‘Esther Waters’ is however set in Shoreham-by-Sea. Published in 1894, the book’s heroine is driven from her home in London at the age of seventeen by a drunken stepfather. She then obtains a position in service as a kitchen maid at ‘Woodview’, a country house, actually based on Buckingham House, Shoreham. Unfortunately, here the naïve young woman is seduced by another servant of the house, becomes pregnant and is dismissed from her position. She leaves Shoreham and experiences much poverty and hardship including time in a workhouse as she struggles to raise her child, before finally many years later, returning to Shoreham and Woodview again. The novel begins with Esther Waters arriving on the train from London at Shoreham station. Apart from the crossing gates being replaced in the modern era by barriers and the fact trains are no long pulled by steam engines, the book’s opening describes a scene that is still familiar to local residents: ‘She stood on the platform watching the receding train. The white steam curled above the few bushes that his the curve of the line, evaporating in the pale evening. A moment more and the last carriage would pass out of sight, the white gates at the crossing swinging slowly forward to let through the impatient passengers.’ Esther Waters has a conversation with a railway porter that depicts Shoreham of the 1890s.‘Shoreham, you see, isn’t what it was in days gone by with shipyards about the harbour, and ships from all parts dropping their sails as they come within the breakwaters. Not much doing in the way of building down this way, a three ton boat or two on the stocks, not much more’. Esther approaches Woodview via Buckingham Road where just beyond north of the level crossing ‘she caught site of some villas, a row of twenty-four semi-detached houses, iron railings, laurels and French windows.’ Woodview, the fictional house in the novel is home to the Barfield family whose life revolves around horse racing. Buckingham house was actually occupied by the Bridger family during the period that George Moore was writing, (though they were soon to move to nearby Adur Lodge). In the novel, staff are mentioned as going drinking in the Red Lion. Around this time it is recorded that Colvill Bridger set up a rabbit warren on his land at Truleigh Hill along with George Moore, so clearly the author visited the house and surrounds on many occasions. The fictional Woodview has its own racing stable, and from

10

the 18th century the Bridger family had also owned Little Buckingham Farm, on land north of what is now The Avenue. There was certainly a small racing stable here during the 192040s when farmer Captain John Torr lived at Little Buckingham, employed grooms and a jockey and entered horses in local races. Perhaps this small racing stable at Little Buckingham was already in existence during the Bridger’s occupancy and was part of George Moore’s inspiration for this aspect of his story. Buckingham House certainly had horses stabled for hunting at Buckingham Park at the time Moore was visiting, as well as the hunt’s kennels. However as George Moore’s father had owned a racing stable at Moore Hall in County Mayo, this aspect of the story is more likely to have derived from the author’s childhood. The depiction of Shoreham as a town that revolved around horseracing is also more likely to stem from Moore’s boyhood recollections of his own home in Ireland. Another place central to the early part of Esther Water’s story in the novel is ‘The Gardens’. ‘You have never been to those Gardens, have you? Dancing-hall, theatre, sorcerers – every blessed thing’. Esther has had a pious upbringing and is not initially keen to visit The Gardens. At this time the Swiss Gardens did have quite a racy reputation. Esther finally visits when a servants’ ball is held there for which ‘a great number of servants had come from West Brighton and Lancing, and Worthing – altogether between two and three hundred.’ Esther is invited for a stroll to see ‘the arbours and ruins’. When it was a pleasure gardens, the Swiss Gardens covered a wide area, spreading beyond what is now Connaught Avenue onto the area now occupied by the school. It was a beautiful place, beloved by day trippers from London: ‘Could she believe that she was not dreaming when they stood on the borders of a beautiful lake full of the shadows of tall trees, and crossed by a wooden bridge at the narrowest end?’ Southwick too was a place frequented and appreciated by George Moore, although it does not feature in ‘Esther Waters’ apart from the fact the horses racing scenes take place on the Downs above it. Writing at Southwick in 1886 in his later book ‘Ave’, George Moore admired the flint farmhouses, the great elms, and all the rich fields worked by smock-flocked labourers and said ‘I am by ancestry a South Saxon. The country of my instinctive inspiration would be Sussex, the most Saxon of all.’ George Moore died in London in 1933. Judy Upton

Shoreham Port Annual Public and Stakeholder meeting

T

his is an invitation to all local residents and port users to learn about developments at Shoreham Port, talk to the Port's team and ask questions. Shoreham Port’s Annual Public and Stakeholders Meeting will be held on Tuesday 3rd July from 7pm until 9pm at the Barn Theatre, Southwick Street, Southwick, BN42 4TE. The Port’s trading highlights include reaching a record breaking throughput in 2011, exceeding 2 million tonnes of cargo for the first time on record! The Port has continued to thrive and figures from the end of the first quarter of 2012 reveal a total of 228 commercial vessels have passed through the Ports terminals. Developments at the Port continue apace and over the next few months the ever changing skyline is set for further changes. A giant steel processing plant for Parker Steel has been under construction for many months and is set for completion this summer. The main workshop in the building, at three and a half acres will be one of the largest single rooms on the south coast. Further construction includes a new grain exporting facility on the land next-door to the silos, which is also well underway and on target to be operational for this year’s harvest season. The Chairman of the Board, Jim May and the Chief Executive, Rodney Lunn will report on many more achievements to date and provide an update on developments for the Port. It is a great opportunity to discuss your views with members of the Board and senior management team and to find out more about the Port. Light refreshments will be provided at the end and there will be an informal question and answer session. For more information please email ngoldsbrough@shoreham-port.co.uk or call 01273 598100 to speak to a member of the team. They look forward to meeting you on 3rd July!

Do you suffer with back pain? M

any people know that osteopaths treat back pain, and indeed, osteopathic treatment is recommended by N.I.C.E. for this, but we also treat many other things such as painful knees, hips, shoulders and necks, trapped nerves and tension headaches. Between each vertebra, nerves emerge, which go to supply almost all of your body. By helping these nerves run as freely as possible, we can often relieve pain and symptoms in more distant areas. Osteopathic treatment uses massage, gentle stretching and occasionally manipulating the joints, to help restore function to problem or immobile areas. It is suitable for patients of all ages. To see if osteopathy may help you, visit our website www.sososteopaths.co.uk. `phone, or attend for a 10 minute free consultation with no obligation. At Shoreham and Southwick Osteopaths we have 3 osteopaths who, between them, have 90 years of experience. Though many doctors do refer patients, it is not necessary to have a doctor’s referral to attend. Osteopathy is not available under the NHS, so we try to keep our fees reasonable, and our waiting lists short, so people who need treatment quickly, or who have failed to be helped by other treatment, or want more than painkillers to mask the problem, can be seen promptly.
