New era approaches for Shoreham Harbour as 91 years of history comes to an end

A

nother milestone has been passed for the new Shoreham Footbridge project. A successful inspection of the bridge was made by representatives of The Big Lottery Fund and national cycling charity Sustrans. Together both organisations have contributed £770,000 towards building the landmark new bridge, which will be wide enough for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters to travel between Shoreham-By-Sea town centre and Shoreham Beach. Following a tour of the site, where they were accompanied by representatives of County Council contractor Osborne, both organisations were happy to sign-off the final instalment of the grant. Sustrans’ Regional Director for the South East, Simon Pratt, said: “Sustrans is delighted to see such good progress with the new bridge, which we are sure will be well used and much loved by local people. “It is such an improvement on the old bridge and will make it much easier for people to walk and cycle for everyday journeys.” The Big Lottery Fund’s Deputy Director and Head of Legal Services, Melloney Poole, said: “The Big Lottery Fund was delighted to help fund Sustrans in support of this project and it was therefore a great pleasure to see this beautiful new bridge nearly completed. “It will clearly be a huge asset to Shoreham and provide a vital link in the Sustrans route along the south coast.” Osborne Chairman Andrew Osborne added: “We are very grateful for the community's support during the construction period and look forward to the opening and renewed access to the people of Shoreham.”

In the meantime, Shoreham-By-Sea’s old footbridge is to be demolished after 91 years. The concrete structure, which has linked the town centre to Shoreham Beach for generations, started to be removed last month and expected to take between eight to 12 weeks for the bridge to be cleared away from the site. Demolition will take place in the river and the material transported down the River Adur to Shoreham Port, where it will be recycled. The swinging section of the new bridge opened fully recently for first time to let demolition crews pass. County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Pieter Montyn, said: “This footbridge has served the people of Shoreham-By-Sea well for the past 90 years, but as anyone who has visited the site can see, times are changing. “Its replacement is exciting and has already transformed the way Shoreham Harbour looks. “We cannot wait for it to be finished and open for the public to use in early September.” 4

Miss Sussex to feature in Sussex Thriller

J

ade Power, winner of Miss Sussex 2013 and contender for the Miss England title, is set to feature in the exciting new film, A DARK REFLECTION, by award winning documentary maker Tristan Loraine. British-born actress, Ms Georgina Sutcliffe, and Los Angeles-based British born actress, Ms Marina Sirtis, known for her role as ‘Deanna Troi’ in Star Trek, have already pledged their support and will star in the film. Ms Power will play the role of a model. The fact-based investigative thriller, based on Loraine’s own experience as a British Airways Captain, tells the story of an air traffic controller who is suspended following a serious in-flight incident. When his journalist wife (Sutcliffe) – a reporter at the West Sussex County Times - starts to ask questions, she uncovers a disturbing succession of cover-ups dating back to 1954. Billed as ‘Erin Brockovich’ meets ‘All the Presidents Men’, the film is set in and around Sussex, and is already drawing great support on both sides of the Atlantic. Tristan Loraine says: “As a Sussex based thriller, we are delighted that Jade Power, Miss Sussex 2013 has agreed to be part of the film. We would also like to wish Jade all the best in the Miss England competition in June.” “As a cooperative model film we are very grateful for the support we have received so far from local people, businesses and services. “ A DARK REFLECTION is a Fact Not Fiction Production. Loraine founded the company in 2006. Its first documentary ‘Welcome Aboard Toxic Airlines’ triggered two calls for public enquiry when it was released in 2007. Its last feature length documentary 'Shady Lady', an aviation documentary drama set in 1943, was a 2013 Academy Award Contender. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Set your capital free with a Lifetime Mortgage W

e all know that as a population we are getting older. In the past people retired at age 65 and their income was provided by the State Pension, private pension or sometimes a company pension. But with low interest and annuity rates, the value of the income from these sources has reduced significantly in real terms. So what do we have left? We have 6 million retired people living in homes with substantial value, but struggling for income when they retire. The dream of relaxed holidays and pub lunches have become exactly that, a dream and not a reality. Other people have reached retirement and realised that they have not paid off their mortgage, they are left struggling with payments on a reduced income. Maybe they feel that they will have to sell their home and move to a smaller property. These are just two examples of where a “lifetime mortgage may suit. This type of mortgage allows you to release equity from your property, either by way of income or a lump sum. This can be used to enhance your lifestyle in retirement, or perhaps to repay the mortgage which is taking up your income every month. These mortgages are usually taken out on an open-ended basis, meaning that there is no set term. The loan is repaid from your estate when you die, or if you are taken into long term care. Some lenders are now offering mortgages where you can actually pay the interest, meaning the amount you owe will remain the same; the interest is not accrued but paid each month. This can be of help to those who can afford their mortgage, but just want to keep it longer into retirement. Because this is such a growing market, there are more and more providers offering products. This is good as competition keeps the lenders on their toes and they will keep improving their deals to attract business. Taking a lifetime mortgage is a major commitment, and it has never been more essential that you take independent advice. There are many pitfalls to look out for, and an

experienced and qualified adviser will be able to guide you as to the best course of action. If you would like advice on releasing equity from your home, or any other mortgage or financial matter, please call me Claire Cook and my team on 01273 224667. We offer a free initial consultation.

Shoreham Blacksmiths I

n the 19th century an old forge or blacksmith’s shop once existed on the opposite side of the Lower Brighton Road to what is now Sussex Yacht Club. A Mr Tinsley ran it. Blacksmithing as a trade has its origins in the Iron Age. At this time it was discovered that iron could be released from certain rocks when exposed to high temperatures. When it cooled once more it could be crafted into simple tools and hunting weapons. This process was improved when it was discovered that charcoal burnt at higher temperatures than ordinary wood, and could, in a furnace, allow a larger, higher quality piece of iron to form. A skilled craftsman could then hammer the iron into the shapes required for a variety of uses. By 450BC, iron-making was well established as an industry in Britain. By the 13th century blacksmiths were in great demand to produce tools, armour and weapons. New trades emerged as blacksmiths specialised in one particular skill, with amourers, nailmakers, chainmakers and swordsmiths all flourishing at this time. In 1299, The Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths was formed, reflecting the trade’s power and influence in Britain. Over the decades a number of forges came into existence in Shoreham town centre, including one at 26 Church Street. The blacksmith’s shop itself fronted onto Middle Street and was worked by members of the Burtenshaw family from 1875. Well placed to serve the horse and carts, and coaches passing through the High Street, it would also have been an important meeting place where influential local gossip was exchanged and business deals done. The role of the blacksmith would have been an important one in Shoreham-by-Sea, all the time that we relied or horses and horse-drawn transport to move ourselves and our goods around. Not only would the blacksmith have been busy at his anvil making and fitting horseshoes and shrinking iron rims for cartwheels, he would have been shaping the metal parts of agricultural tools, and in earlier centuries, might alsi have been the local dentist or vet. Horses waiting to be shod were traditionally tethered beneath a spreading chestnut tree grown next to the forge. The idea was to shade the tired work animals from the elements while they waited to be fitted with their next pair of shoes. Horses were not the only animals with hooves that needed protection if they were to be working on hard, stoney ground and roads. Special shoes were also made for the oxen that pulled carts and ploughed the fields on many farms. As cattle

8

have cloven hooves their shoes looked rather different, each comprising of two separate pieces. A blacksmith’s shop in Pond Road, on the site now housing the Shoreham Centre, had, in 1707 it’s own piece of pasture land which would have been very useful if a number of animals were waiting to be shod. The pond which originally existed on this site would have been a useful source of water, both for cooling the forged iron and providing drinking water for the horses and oxen. Farming implements to be pulled by the horses or oxen, such as ploughs, rakes and hoes would also have been crafted by the smith, along with the metal parts of the animals’ harnesses. Because his job demanded skill and a certain amount of academic knowledge, he would also have been considered for the roles of magistrate and churchwarden in the village. As a blacksmith had a fire alight day and night, all year round, in the early days it was in an oven at the forge that the bread for the village might be baked, or meat roasted. In more recent centuries, when each village had its own bakery, at the end of the blacksmith’s working day, the hot coals from his fire were taken to the bakery to bake the bread at night. Back in the Middle Ages though, people had often viewed blacksmiths with distrust. They saw his art of turning hard iron into something malleable as magic or witchcraft. Many blacksmiths were burnt as witches. In other villages, blacksmithing was banned as a black art with anyone caught practicing the craft being put to death. The devil burning in hell was, by some, linked to the blazing fire of the blacksmith’s forge and may even be where this concept originated. In more modern times, right up until the mid 20th century, the blacksmith’s shop was still at the heart of many Sussex villagers. Some of those initially family-run firms diversified and became more general engineering businesses. As horsedrawn farm carts and implements became a thing of the past, other blacksmiths kept pace with the increased mechanisation of agriculture. The most famous case is that of John Deere in American, who became involved in the manufacture of modern farm machinery and tractors. In Sussex the traditional blacksmith is still to be found, mostly shoeing horses that are kept for riding, and making parts for historic and heritage horsedrawn vehicles. Now though a single blacksmith may serve a wide area, travelling with a mobile forge to visit horses needing to be shod. Judy Upton

It's not all bloom gloom and doom B

y the time you read this we will just passed the longest day. That isn’t intended as a gloom and doom statement, it’s just that it marks yet another change in the garden year, as plants will begin to slow down their fast pace of growth. It’s quite nice after the hectic months leading into summer, getting prepared with planting, sowing and preparing, to

10

be able to take a deep breath and enjoy what you have achieved in the garden. All too often we don’t actually sit back and look around to see how well we’ve done in the garden and how wonderful it all looks. For all the hard work in the garden, and the never shortening list of jobs to do, you really do need to stand back and see what’s been accomplished. By doing that it allows you to take stock of what has worked and what hasn’t worked so well, or what has been a complete disaster! If there is something you want to change then plan for it now. It is one of the best times to make the plans as you get to see the garden when it’s in its fullness of growth, so you can gauge easily what will fit in where. However this time of year isn’t always the best time to put the plans into action, so plan it through ready for later in the year. Never be afraid to make changes in the garden or try something new. If it works great, if it doesn’t then try again. It’s all a big learning curve that should be fun and interesting. One of the best ways of enjoying the garden is having somewhere to sit down, relax and get a good view of the garden. All too often people have a table and chairs near the house, as it works well for entertaining and day to day life, but to really appreciate the garden, its well worth having a small seat or bench elsewhere, so you can get a different view of the garden and be away from the house. I find that a seating area at the opposite end of the garden or hidden half way up, just tucked away out of view always seems to works well. You have to make an effort to get there to sit down and get away from all the other day to day distractions, but once there, you need a lot of motivation to get back up. Simple seating always works well, but with a little bit of work you can make it more enjoyable by adding fragrant plants, climbers and your favourite colours, to really make it your favourite spot in the garden. I did have a list of jobs which need doing in the garden this month, which I was going to write about, but since summer is all too fleeting, I really thought it would be nicer to actually encourage people to enjoy the fruits of their labour, relax and have a think about the garden this month. T

he Southwick Players are proud to present Private Lives by Noel Coward, a dazzling and irresistible comedy. Passion, laughter, romance, anger and love set the stage for a classic battle of the sexes. Divorcees Elyot (Leigh Ward) and Amanda (Bea Mitchell-Turner) unwittingly book adjourning rooms while honeymooning with their new spouses – Sybil (Louise Yeo) and Victor (Ben Cassan). Realising a pair of mistaken marriages, Elyot and Amanda's love is rekindled and they fling themselves headlong into a whirlwind of love and lust once more, without a thought for

their partners or their turbulent past. With haste and under the cover of darkness, they flee in search of respite within Amanda’s secluded Paris flat, only to be discovered several days later by their jilted lovers, whilst in the midst of the most compromising of situations. This provides the ingredients of Noel Coward’s sparkling cocktails of witty, fast moving hilarious comedies. This is a welcome return to The Southwick Players for Director Michael Padley. With an impressive catalogue of plays behind him he is delighted to be staging Private Lives. Michael said "Noel Coward's wonderful dialogue still

Dog Poo with your Coffee? S

horeham Beach exudes Sunday morning coffee culture. Grab a take out from Bakery 2, walk down Ferry Road on to the walk way, and the Local Vet Hannah take a seat on the Capon from shingle. However Coastway Shoreham the mood changes when you find a pile of dog poo nearby. It isn’t just a foul inconvenience, it’s a health risk especially to children where a weaker immune system and a tendency to stick fingers and thumbs in mouths makes them vulnerable to serious parasitic infection present in faeces of dogs that are not regularly wormed. A dog roundworm can lay 85,000 eggs in a lifetime and these can remain viable for 2-3 years in the environment. If ingested accidentally by a child [or

adult] the egg hatches, and a tiny larva migrates through the body. Generally this causes no problem, but occasionally, and depending where the larva ends up, headaches, stomach aches, dizziness and even blindness can be the outcome. Picking up after your dog is an inevitable responsibility of dog ownership. Wisely, Adur and Worthing Council impose a fixed penalty of £50 for owners caught ignoring this duty [if not paid within 14 days, a court summons and a £1000 fine may follow]. Residents can also report offenders to the dog wardens via the council website. So for all you dog owners out there. Bag it and bin it! However the other important message here is to worm your dog regularly [ideally every three months] and this will totally eliminate the infection risk from that nasty roundworm.
