Charity Quilt for the ROPETACKLE’S MILESTONE MEAL Kent, Surrey and Ropetackle Arts Centre’s Sussex Air Ambulance collaboration with Shoreham Sure that we’ve all had some little coincidences in our lives that make us think that something quirky is happening. However, nothing could prepare Sue Davis for the one that happened in September 2014. At the monthly meeting of the Sussex Quilters’ they took a decision on which charity to support as part of the forthcoming exhibition in October 2015. A group quilt would be made using a variety of 12” blocks, the predominant colours would be black and white with a dash of a plain colour in each block. The quilt would be raffled and the proceeds would go to the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance Service. Now definitely the money would be going to a good cause, but actually Sue knew next to nothing about the Air Ambulance, how that was to change within the space of a very few days. In fact just after a week later her husband was involved in a cycle accident on Worthing’s seafront cycle path. His injuries and outlook were so serious that the Air Ambulance was called and following some intensive on the scene care he was airlifted to St. George’s Hospital in Tooting. Sue was delighted to say that following some ups and downs he has now made a complete recovery, all thanks to the extraordinary care and dedication given by the local ambulance service, the Police and of course the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance Service. Now that’s what she calls a coincidence. The Sussex Quilters’ Exhibition will be held on October 10th 2015 at Shoreham Community Centre, Shoreham-By-Sea, West Sussex BN43 5WU. The exhibition will be open between 10am and 4pm. However, if you wish to buy raffle tickets in aid of KSS Air Ambulance at £1 each before the day then please contact margaret@truants.plus.com l Sussex Quilters’ meet on the first Wednesday of the month at Southwick Community Centre. For further information contact Anne Moncrieff 01273 328215 or Angela Avis 01273 595369.

based Lesley’s Kitchen has reached a huge milestone with 1000 pre-show meals served since opening in January. Run by Lesley and Barry Ward, who have lived in Shoreham for over 30 years, Lesley’s Kitchen has been offering an eclectic menu of delicious home cooked food to audiences before events at Shoreham’s busy arts centre. The 1000th meal came before Scottish folk rockers Mànran performed on Thursday 4th June, and to celebrate the milestone lucky diners Brian and Claire Ablett were presented with a special bottle of bubbly. Ropetackle spokesman Mark Phillips said: “It’s great to have preshow meals back at Ropetackle, and working with Lesley’s Kitchen has been a real pleasure. When we were looking to relaunch our café we also wanted to bring back the pre-show food offer, something we’d tried previously. Lesley and Barry were first on our list and their reputation as top local caterers has shown with the response we’ve had in both feedback and numbers. 1000 meals is a testament to the quality of their food and service, and their meals have really added something special to our events.” Lesley and Barry Ward said: “We were delighted to serve our 1000th meal after just 5 months of providing pre-show suppers at Ropetackle. The suppers have taken off really well and audiences are really enjoying the chance to relax with a home cooked meal before an event. It’s also lovely to be able to provide the artists with a good meal before they go on stage. It was a pleasure to serve The Blockheads, Shappi Khorsandi, and Mànran, to name but a few. “We’ve been getting busier and busier which is great, and because of that we’re now looking into a booking system to avoid disappointment. We’d like to thank Ropetackle for giving us this opportunity and also a huge thank you to everyone who has enjoyed our pre-show suppers. We can’t wait to reach the next thousand!” Lesley’s Kitchen serve pre-show meals before events taking place at Ropetackle Arts Centre on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Menus are available on the Ropetackle website by visiting the event pages.

ADUR HEALTHY WALKERS Adur walkers are launching a new walk around Fishersgate and Southwick to begin with our new programme in July. This will start and finish at Southwick Library and will usually be on a Friday afternoon, lasting approximately one hour. We look forward to seeing some new faces. We have been established some six years and have around 150 members. There are on average about 20 walks a month over an area covering Fishersgate, Southwick, Shoreham, Lancing, Bramber and Steyning. We have three levels of walks varying from 1 hour to 2-3 hours, easy to slightly more difficult. Our walks are not a race, you walk at a pace that is comfortable for you and leaders make sure that everybody is kept together at all times. Most of the local walks start from the libraries which are easily accessible by bus. Our most popular walks are from Shoreham Library on a Monday, having up to 25-30 walkers. For the wider area’s car sharing can be arranged for those who do not drive. Our leaders are trained and all of our walks are risk assessed. 4

All our walks are FREE but we do have fund raising events, such as a coffee morning in Shoreham usually in October and monthly Lotto Bonus Ball. We were also awarded a Grant last year by Adur District Council which has been a great help. We also have a Christmas lunch, again held in Shoreham but not subsidised. Many of our walkers have made friends and shop, holiday and lunch together. Walking is proved to be good for your Health and wellbeing, so come and join our happy band of walkers. If you are looking for a pleasant and satisfying way to spend some spare time, we are currently looking for new leaders. You can lead as much or as little as you want and will be trained free of charge on a short one day course. For more information our programmes can be found in Libraries, Doctors Surgeries, or call Jean Marsh 01273 465669 or Ann Geal 01903 266373 or visit our website www.adurworthing.gov.uk/sport-and-leisure/play-a-sport/walking To advertise call: 01273 452065

Can I leave my NISA to my spouse?

I

N THE CURRENT world of low interest rates, people are very keen to ensure they utilise all of their tax free allowances. With rates being low, any extra return is normally very welcome, however small. Many savers trawl the high street and internet to find the best deals. Some have transferred to the stocks and shares version of the NISA trying to achieve a better return. This tax year you can invest up to £15,240 into a NISA, this can be a cash NISA, or a stocks and shares NISA or a combination of the two. Over the years some have built up quite a substantial sum, so what happens if that person dies?

This tax year you can invest up to £15,240 into a NISA, this can be a cash NISA, or a stocks and shares NISA or a combination of the two. Over the years some have built up quite a substantial sum, so what happens if that person dies? A less well known fact about NISAs is that if your spouse or civil partner dies, you can actually inherit an allowance up to the value of their NISAs at the time they died. For example, if a husband died and had £30,000 in an NISA, the wife could invest £30,000 in an inheritance NISA. This is called the “Additional Permitted Subscription” allowance. The person can also continue to use their own allowance, which is not affected. The extra allowance passes to the spouse/civil partner even if the funds were not left to them. They can even use their own money to open an inheritance NISA. It is the allowance that is inherited, rather than necessarily the funds. The new rules ensure that if someone has spent years building up their tax free investments, the allowance can be passed on, so their spouse can continue to invest and receive tax free growth. When you consider that if someone had invested their maximum PEP/ NISA subscription each year since they were introduced in 1987 this would total £242,320, not inclusive of any growth; there are a lot of people who have built up quite a sum. These new rules will benefit a lot of people, but only if they know about it! 6

Is there a time limit?

The rules came into effect on 6th April 2015 and apply to anyone who died after 3rd December 2014. You have three years to take up the allowance or 180 days from the date the estate is settled, whichever is later. If you need advice on the above or any other financial matters, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer independent advice and a free initial consultation.. INIGO JONES

A

MONG THE FAMOUS historical figures associated with Shoreham is the architect Inigo Jones. He was born in Smithfields, London on the 15th of July 1573. The son of a Welsh cloth worker, he did not approach the architectural profession in a traditional way, by either rising up from a craft or through early exposure to the Office of Works. There is evidence however that Sir Christopher Wren obtained information that recorded Inigo Jones as an apprentice joiner in St Paul’s Churchyard. As well as becoming prominent in the world of architecture, Inigo Jones is the man who introduced both movable scenery and the proscenium arch stage to English theatre. Between 1605 and 1640, Jones designed the sets for over 500 productions, often collaborating with playwright Ben Jonson. Jonson and Jones has a fractious relationship though, quarrelling over whether the script or stage design was the most important thing in theatre. The animosity clearly ran deep as Jonson went on to mock Jones in a series of plays, written over twenty years. Over 450 drawings of scenery and costumes from Jones’ stage shows survive, showing evidence of his great skill as a draughtsman. In 1621 Jones became a member of parliament; one of two members representing the borough of New Shoreham at that time. By now he was becoming renowned for his design of buildings and had been appointed Surveyor of the King’s Works. He embarked on a tour of Italy with the Earl of Arundel who was destined to become one of the most important patrons in the history of English art. Classical Italian architecture in cities such as Rome greatly influenced Jones who was more interested in the buildings constructed by the Romans than anything being built there in his own era. In 1616 work began on Jones’ design for the Queen’s House at Greenwich. It was finished in 1635 and was the first strictly classical building in England. It is today Jones’ earliest surviving work. Between 1619 and 1622 he designed the Banqueting

8

House in the Palace of Whitehall, which had a ceiling painted by Rubens. Next was the Queen’s Chapel at St. James Place, built between 1623-1627 for Charles I’s wife Henrietta Maria. Then Jones turned his attentions to designing Covent Garden Square, commissioned by the Earl Of Bedford, and influenced by the Italian piazza at Livorno. The Earl felt he must provide a church on the site and he warned Jones that he wanted to economise. He told him to simply erect a “barn” and Jones’s oftquoted response was that his lordship would have “the finest barn in Europe”. In the design of St Paul’s, Covent Garden, Jones used a classical Tuscan temple design. Sadly the interior was destroyed by fire in 1795, but externally it remains a landmark of bustling Covent Garden today. In 1625 Jones designed Ford Amsterdam for The Dutch East India Company, which was supposed to be a stone fortress on the Hudson River. However it was constructed of wood instead and torn down in 1790. Inigo Jones also undertook a restoration and remodeling of old St. Paul’s Cathedral. The stone for this work was carried up the Thames by a ship chartered from Shoreham. Jones added a large portico to the cathedral but it did not survive the Great Fire Of London in 1666. Inigo Jones’s career as an architect was ended by the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642. He ended his days, unmarried, living in Somerset House. A monument dedicated to him was unfortunately, like his St Paul’s portico, destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. He died on the 21st June 1652 and was subsequently buried alongside his parents at St Benet Paul’s Wharf, the Welsh church of the City of London. John Denham and Christopher Wren followed him as King’s Surveyor of Works. Inigo Jones was an influence on a number of 18th century architects, notably Lord Burlington and William Kent. There is an Inigo Jones Road in Charlton, south east London though nothing to remember him locally. Judy Upton

A fair Summer? I

T’S BEEN A fair Summer so far from the point of view of the gardener. Warm, and with a bit of rain to keep things ticking over nicely and the results are starting to show in the garden with most plants making a good show. This time of year is when the garden is in full flow, giving glorious Summer displays, and the fruit and vegetables starting to produce lovely produce. It’s so wonderful that you never want it to end, and although as the length of day is starting to

12

shorted slowly, you can still help things to keep going. Flowers will always respond well to the effort of deadheading and stopping them going to seed. That way they will produce more flowers in an effort to get to the end result of producing more seed. That way you’ll get a longer display. It’s easy to assume that plants are happy growing in their pots, or containers or even their beds, however they soon use up the nutrients around them and can suffer as a result. It’s a good idea to boost this by using a liquid feed, or a top dressing of decent compost. After the really wet weather at the beginning of the year a lot of nutrients were simply washed down through the soil, so any extra boost will be welcome The same applies with fruit and vegetables. Keep picking them at the right time and they will keep trying to produce more. The same holds true more than ever with boosting them as they put a tremendous effort into producing the vegetables. This is especially true with plants such as tomatoes, and especially when they are in grow bags. Make sure you regularly feed them as they will get through the nutrients in the bag very quickly. As a further tip, it’s never a bad idea to put a grow bag on top of another one when you first set them up, to get double the depth and goodness from the. It also helps to hold the water better. Keep sowing seeds such as salads, radishes etc as they will grow rapidly and keep producing fresh supplies for you to enjoy. Once anything has got past its best, make sure to compost it as it will all give a good added boost to the compost heap. Despite the fact the lawn will be producing plenty of cuttings at this time of year, don’t be tempted to smoother the compost heap in them, to get rid of them, as they will stifle what is in the bin already, and remember to turn the compost well regularly. As most of us will be looking towards holidays at this time of year, make sure you plan looking after the garden, whilst you are away, getting a neighbour in to help keep on top of things, to avoid coming back to a jungle or a barren waste land At this time of year there really is no excuse not to be out in the garden on the long summer evenings, and if you even spend a few minutes each evening whilst out there doing a few jobs you really will keep the garden looking better for longer, so give it a go and enjoy it. What causes it?

Swimmer’s Shoulder Swimming is a very popular leisure activity, whether it be in a pool or the sea. This month Louis Jones looks at a common injury that occurs in swimmers, the swimmers shoulder. What is Swimmer’s Shoulder?

This is a broad term related to overuse injuries of the shoulder joint, such as rotator cuff impingement (pinching of the rotator tendons as the arm is lifted), biceps tendonitis (a painful inflammation of the biceps tendon), and shoulder instability, in which structures that surround the shoulder joint do not work to maintain the ball within its socket.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

16

Most of the time, shoulder injury in the swimmer is due to poor technique, overuse through over training, and weakness or instability in the shoulder. Poor technique, can include: 1. A poor catch, when you try and scoop water back and end up putting too much strain through the shoulder. 2. Poor position in the water, for example swimming too flat without enough trunk rotation can put excess strain on the shoulder, as you are relying on the shoulder to compensate by moving further. Weakness or instability means that your muscles are underdeveloped and do not support your shoulder correctly, so that the shoulder joint can move around more freely in its joint but without proper control. Thirdly, having poor flexibility can cause injury, if you are trying to achieve large movements that your shoulder isn’t capable of.

How can we avoid Swimmer’s Shoulder?

1. Strengthening exercises to build stability around the shoulder joint and shoulder blade, namely the rotator cuff muscles. External and internal rotation exercises with an exercise band are good for strengthening the rotator cuff. Also strengthening the muscles around the shoulder blades (by squeezing your shoulder blades together), and the big lateral muscles of the shoulder (the Lattisimus Dorsi) to help with catching and pulling the water. 2. Stretching/mobility exercises to allow adequate flexibility and joint movement to make achieving a good technique possible. Exercises such as circling the shoulders are good mobility exercises and pendular swinging. Stretching the shoulders and chest, such as hugging a straight arm across your body with your opposite arm, or stretching a straight arm behind you, using a door frame is good. 3. Improving trunk and neck mobility can be important, to avoid any neural tension in the shoulder and upper limbs, and also to assist mobility in the shoulders. 4. When is the water, make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, in order to keep the cells in your muscles hydrated and reducing your risk of injury. It is possible to get dehydrated even in a cold pool! 5. Doing core strength exercises is important, to assist a good position in the water, and to support your back, neck and shoulders. 6. Practice good technique by doing swimming drills, focusing on individual parts of a swim stroke, and avoid swimming when you get tired and your form deteriorates. If in doubt stop and rest to allow your body recovery, before starting again. 7. You can alleviate strain on your shoulders by using various swimming aids, such as fins, a pull buoy or paddles. Used correctly, these items can greatly improve your position in the water, assist your technique, and allow your body to perform fewer strokes, which can reduce the risk of overuse or repetition. So whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or triathlete, or you just enjoy a paddle on holiday, remember to limber up and stretch to avoid injury. If you are unfortunate enough to develop a shoulder injury, feel free to contact me on 01273 467614 or at louisjones.physio@googlemail.com. To advertise call: 01273 452065

SCHOOL PLACE EXPANSION

T

HE EXPANSION OF a number of existing schools is being proposed — people can give their views online. A consultation into the creation of hundreds of new school places in Chichester, Bognor Regis, Angmering, Rustington and Shoreham-by-Sea has been launched by West Sussex County Council (WSCC). The extra places are needed due to an increase in the number of children being born locally, people moving to the area and large housing developments. The expansion of a number of existing schools is being proposed and people are being asked to give their views on the plans online. West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Jeremy Hunt, said: “We have been closely monitoring the number of children in schools in these areas to make sure they can meet the demand for places.” “Last year we received new information about the number of pre-school children who currently live in the area and the further growth in the number of children that is expected in the future.” The proposals involve the expansion of

18

the following schools: • East Preston Infant and Junior schools • Nyewood Infant and Junior schools, Bognor Regis • Parklands Primary School, Chichester • Rustington Primary (Academy) School • Buckingham Park School, Shorehamby-Sea • St Nicolas and St Mary’s CE Primary School, Shoreham-by-Sea • The Glebe Primary School, Southwick Further details can be found in a consultation document available online or in local libraries. Jeremy added: “We anticipate that the current high demand for places will

MOMENTS OF CHANGE

WORDFEST 2015

E

XCITING EVENTS ARE planned for the fifth Shoreham Wordfest from the end of September to October 11th featuring local luminaries, national authors and international performers. Julie Gearey, author of Cuffs, the new police TV series filmed in Shoreham earlier this year, will be talking about the writing and production for the annual Wordfest dinner at Sussex Yacht Club on Thursday October 1st. David Courtney, internationally acclaimed song writer and the man behind the pop career of former Shoreham resident Leo Sayer is celebrating his long career in music with a special show at Ropetackle, hosted by former DJ Mike Read. Celebrated playwright, David Hare, talks about his new memoir, The Blue Touch Paper, at his former school, Lancing College. The controversial journalist and commentator, Julie Burchill will be talking about her book, Unchosen, at the Yacht Club. They have the world premiere of Roll Over Atlantic, a new show by Carribbean-British poet and performer John Agard, and a special talk, Simpson and I by Oggy Boytchev about his time working with the BBC’s

John Simpson in some of the most dangerous places on earth. Carol Cleveland, star of the Monty Python show, the Wicked Queen in the Ropetackle Pantomime and Shoreham resident, performs Pom Poms Up! giving you a taste of her glamorous (or not) Hollywood lifestyle as a young woman. Another man about Shoreham, author Tom Cutler is staging “Pack up Your Troubles”, a show featuring songs from both World Wars, with the stories of the people who wrote and sang them. He is also talking with Wordfest patron, playwright and author Simon Brett on “How to avoid Writing.” As a new venture this year, Wordfest is promoting “Adur Reads”, featuring Unexploded by Brighton based author Alison MacLeod, in partnership with West Sussex Libraries. They are encouraging as many people as possible to read this thrilling novel about Brighton during the Second World War, before meeting Alison on Friday 2 October. There are children and family events, walks and talks and many more shows, all featured in the programme which will be distributed widely. They will be selling tickets at the Farmer’s Market from July, and all the details and ticket bookings visit: www.shorehamwordfest.com

SUMMER SEASON BUS ROUTE

ADUR VALLEY LINE L

AST YEAR A local bus company, Southern Transit, trialled its new Adur Valley Line, Bus Route 3, affectionately known as “Steyning Flyer”. The new weekend route was welcomed by both residents and visitors alike so this summer we will be running the service again, commercially without funding. Our low floor, wheelchair friendly buses will run every two hours. We will be selling and accepting Discovery tickets and accepting valid, concessionary passes. Starting at the Holmbush Centre in Shoreham our route stops at leisure and cultural hotspots as we closely follow the downs link to Horsham. Ropetackle Arts Centre, local markets and the Adur Outdoor Activity Centre are all within walking distance of our Shoreham bus stops. Ride the bus to Bramber and you’ll reach the ancient remains and spectacular views of the castle. Next the historic market town of Steyning followed by lovely nature walks at Tottington Woods and Woods Mill. Henfields bustling High Street full of shops and restaurants is a popular choice for shoppers. Further out-of-town both families and pizza lovers will enjoy “The Bull Inn”. Followers of the Real Ale Trail will want to visit the Dark Star pub “The Partridge” in Partridge Green and garden lovers can explore “The

Camelia Botnar Homes and Garden Centre”. You can alight at Southwater Country Park for both relaxing land or adventurous water-based activities. Finally our route visits Horsham with its numerous cultural and leisure activities. We stop at both the bus and train station in Horsham offering excellent links for further travel. Don’t forget that on the 22nd and 23rd of August you can use our service to visit the Shoreham air show without the worry of driving and parking. And on the 31st August, Bank Holiday Monday we’ll be offering you the opportunity to travel our route in style on one of our iconic Routemaster buses. Look out for our distinctive, collectable booklet containing route and ticket details. The number 3 Southern Transit bus starts on Saturday 25th July and runs every weekend until Sunday 6th September. Visit: www.southerntransit.co.uk
