Labour to fight the 2015 General Election
T
HE LABOUR PARTY has selected Sussex-born conservation campaigner Tim Macpherson as its candidate to contest the 2015 General Election in East Worthing and Shoreham. Tim is closely involved with community events along the coast and he is the driving force behind the successful Bexhill Festival of the Sea. Aged 53, he was born in Hastings and lives in Sussex running a successful digital publishing and media communications business. He is married and has three children –– all educated at Sussex state schools. Tim is heavily involved in conservation work campaigning on behalf of the Angling Trust to ensure that the new Marine Conservation Zone at the Kingmere Reef and local fish stocks are managed sensibly. “Having lived in the Sussex most of my life I have a good understanding of the issues, both within urban centres and in the surrounding rural areas. I will work for the continued regeneration of four main centres in the constituency – East Worthing, Sompting and Lancing, Shoreham and Southwick,” says Tim. “We have some major challenges to 4
overcome in Adur and East Worthing. Such as, where do we locate muchneeded housing developments? The current plan to build on the flood plain West of the Adur will just stoke up trouble for the future. “I’m very concerned too about current plans for a major upheaval in Worthing schools. Who benefits from these plans? I intend to find out,” Tim adds. Tim says his parents devoted their lives to the NHS and he welcomes Labour’s
pledge to end the health services sell-off and scrap the Tory Health Act. “I became active in the Labour Party to campaign against inequality: gender, sexual, racial and social. That means everyone having the best start in life, and the best treatment available free at the point of need.” Tim Macpherson was selected in an all-member vote by East Worthing and Shoreham Labour Party last Wednesday, July 16. CLP Chair Irene Reed said: “Tim is the right man to challenge the Tory Tim Loughton. He has got great energy, he is a terrific communicator – and he’s firmly committed to helping us deliver a Labour government in this crucial general election. “Labour has a raft of progressive policies which address the major issues facing our nation and these resonate on a local level – bringing the rail companies into public ownership, scrapping the iniquitous Tory heatlh act and rebuilding our economy so that it can work for everyone, not jist a few Tory donors. It is vital that the country elects a Labour Government to begin the job of rebalancing the inequalities created by the current Conservative led government.” To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Investments – has your interest dropped?
D
URING THEIR LIFETIMES people tend to gather various financial products. They receive paperwork throughout the years which sometimes gets filed, and often not! Once people are with a provider they tend to stay with them; it seems far too complicated to change. I disagree with this, for a small amount of effort and time you could get your money under control, understand what you have and make it work harder for you. Not only that, from the people I have dealt with over the years, it seems that once they understand their investments they are far more likely to look after and add to them, it is all positive! For most people financial products such as pensions and investments have been taken at varying times. They were the best on offer at the time, but many have not been reviewed since. People don’t know if they are in a well performing fund, or one which could do better. Most don’t know what charges they are paying and how their performance is being affected. Many people’s funds are languishing in old style contracts, but the financial world has moved on. Charges are often lower and the systems for managing your money have greatly evolved. Online systems allow you to check your values and get more in touch with what you have, whether that is pensions, investments or savings plans. Has your interest dropped? You may have invested in fixed rate bonds with the bank or building society a few years ago, you may have been receiving a comparatively high rate of interest. Now the bonds are maturing and the new rates are far lower. What is the next step? Either you have to take the lower rate (which may not even keep up with inflation) or take some advice. There are alternatives to investing in the building society, and at the risk level you feel comfortable with. An IFA can look at other options. Once your finances are better organised, they are easier to manage. A coherent plan makes things far easier to follow and review. The systems can keep your investments at the right risk level for you so that you are not invested at too high, or too low risk. Often your money can be invested in a portfolio which has proactive reviews, ensuring your money is constantly looked after. All of this is at your fingertips, all you need to do is gather the paperwork together and see an IFA such as myself. 6
If you would like a simple, independent review of your finances, please give me a call. I am also offering a free initial consultation to Inside Shoreham and Southwick readers. My telephone number is 01273 224667. I would be very happy to help. The value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the amount invested. KEEP THINGS SIMPLE
W
E ARE INTO August and the weather just starts to get that golden tinge to it, with the slight little change noticeable in the mornings as summer slowly seeps away and autumn just starts to nudge its way in little by little. The plants in the garden are now fighting to keep their best performances going as the days slowly start to shorten at each end, but they still have a lot to give and for us to enjoy As we are into the school holidays, it is inevitable that gardens
12
will take a beating from the increased activity on them from children playing and making the best of it, and why not since it’s one of the main reasons the garden is there. The lawn can especially take a pounding with endless games of football, or paddling pools and trampolines being set up. If you are going to keep any of these items up for the duration of the summer then it’s worth taking the effort to move them every few days. This will avoid the inevitable dead patches of crushed lawn that have been deprived of light. In most cases they do bounce back but it can weaken the grass, so a little prevention is well worth the effort. Another reason for the garden taking some neglect is being left whilst away on holidays. It always seems to be the best time to go away, but it always seems to coincide with everything coming to fruition, such as runner beans, tomatoes etc. It means that all the hard work of caring for them can be undone in a couple of weeks if you don’t make some plans. Unless you have a really good friend who is a keen gardener, then don’t expect them to look after your garden with the same level of care! Keep things simple. If you have containers then group them together to make watering easier. It also helps to reduce the amount of evaporation. The same in the greenhouse, with pots in there. Make sure you trim back tomato plants before you go and pick any fruit off of any other vegetable, even if they are not quite ready. You want to keep any vegetable or fruit plant producing for when you get back, so better to waste a few under developed ones now, rather than coming back to a plant with oversized crops, meaning it has passed its best and started to go to seed. The same goes for flowers, so deadhead as much as possible before you go to ensure you come back to a good show when you return If you can’t get someone in to water things for you, then it’s worth getting a simple timer from a garden centre and setting it up on your hose with a sprinkler. That will be able to do the majority of your essential plants without they need to reply on anyone else Whatever happens whilst you are away, most things will survive and can be soon knocked back into shape, so enjoy a break from the garden, but just remember, everything always looks so much bigger when you get back off of holiday! SWEET DREAMS
ACUPUNCTURE FOR INSOMNIA Insomnia is one of the most common complaints Leonna Andersson hear’s about in her clinic. Poor sleep can affect your attention span and energy.
M
ANY OF US either have trouble switching our minds off, or wake in the night and can’t get off to sleep again. It can be linked to many other conditions such as anxiety, depression, stress or hormonal imbalances. Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system and cause the release of neurochemicals, thus promoting physical and emotional well-being. Acupuncture has been shown to affect areas of the brain that are known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, as well as promoting relaxation and deactivating the ‘analytical’ brain, which is responsible for insomnia and anxiety (British Acupuncture Council 2011). Acupuncture can be safely combined with conventional medical treatments for insomnia, such as benzodiazepines, helping to reduce their side effects and enhance their beneficial effects.
Follow these simple lifestyle practices to get your sleep back on track: • Get regular acupuncture treatments • Avoid TV or using the computer one hour before bedtime–both have a brain-stimulating effect. • Avoid stimulants, including sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. • Eat your last meal of the day by 7p.m. so digestion is finished before bedtime. • Get 30 minutes of exercise daily • Keep to a regular bedtime and go to bed by 10 p.m if possible • Soak your feet in a bowl of warm water before bed. This brings the energy down from the head, preventing an overactive mind and aiding relaxation. Add 2 drops of lavender oil if you like.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU…
JUDY UPTON
This month Jeanette Lamb get’s to know local writer, playwright and screenwriter, Judy Upton
J
UDY UPTON … now why does the name seem so familiar? I was delighted to make her acquaintance; interesting articles are often written by interesting people! Since 2005, Judy has been writing mainly historic articles in this magazine. The first article was about Christmas Shopping in Southwick. Seasons influence article contents. This month will be the 100th historic article written for Inside, Shoreham and Southwick magazine – eventually to be published in book form. Judy was educated at King’s Manor (Woodward Academy), taking A-Levels at Worthing College of Technology (Northbrook College), studying English Literature at Chichester University. Since the age of 15 she wanted to write fiction. This all changed in 1994 when Judy won the George Devine Award, given by the Royal Court Theatre in London, as well as the Verity Bargate award run by Solo Theatre; two different plays — one set in Brighton, the other in Worthing. Both were produced at Royal Court Theatre in London. Judy’s interest in local history was encouraged by her father and grandfather, as well as her late uncle Fred Witten, a member of Sussex Archaeological Society, involved with the Marlipins
16
Museum in Shoreham. In 2009, Joan Upton, Judy’s mother, provided information for two articles concerning her own reminiscences of her years working in the town’s Woolworth’s store. Writing plays for the theatre and BBC Radio 4 takes up a lot of her time. Most of her plays are set in Sussex and in 2001 she was asked to turn her stage play ‘Ashes and Sand’ into a feature film script. This was shot in Brighton and Worthing, starring Nick Moran and Lara Belmont, at different locations in Sussex, including Brighton Pavilion and Worthing Pier. This year Judy has been made a patron of the Worthing Wow Festival and along with Simon Brett had an evening of her short plays performed at the Connaught Theatre Studio on June 18th. Pets? A rabbit called Smokey, Green toad a.k.a. Troy and a Gold Fish! Currently, Judy is working on a new stage play. I asked her what inspires her play writing … “Characters come first, always fictional, unless I’m commissioned to write about a certain theme or subject. Once I had a dream when suffering from chicken pox. The dream turned into a screenplay called My Imprisoned Heart, which won a film competition!” Space does not permit mention of Judy’s interesting career as a Playwright and Screenwriter, but googling her website; www.judyupton.co.uk will bring you up-to-date with her work. We all wish you a Happy 100th Judy!

HELPFUL TIPS IN BEING A
A FOSTER CARER Some helpful tips on how to help your foster child settle in.
Have Patience
B
EFORE A FOSTER child or young person arrives into your house for the first time can be a daunting, nervous and exciting time. Your duties as a foster parent will start when they walk through the door and it is so important that they feel comfortable and relaxed from this moment. Put yourself in their shoes. They are entering a new home which can be an overwhelming and
stressful experience.
Show Sensitivity
You may feel like you want to give your foster child a welcoming hug when they enter your home however some children may be sensitive to touch. Be sensitive and aware of their reactions to things and events and acknowledge that trust will build slowly if you have created a welcoming environment.
Each child or young person will adjust to a new setting in their own time. The child or young person’s previous circumstances will play an important role in this, for example children who have had multiple caregivers may take longer to settle in and feel at home with you. Have confidence in your ability as a carer and don’t be afraid to ask the child or young person what you can do to make them feel more comfortable. You may have to ask this on multiple occasions whilst they are settling in as the first few weeks in a new home can be traumatic for the child or young person and as a result difficult for them to retain all of the new information that have been exposed to.
Be approachable
It is important for you to meet your foster child with a smile and positive body language so they start to feel that they can approach and talk to you.
Are you ready to invest in the future? Caring for a child or young person can be challenging at times, but it’s also very rewarding and fun. If you have a spare room and time to care for a child or young person we will support you.
