SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK

SEPTEMBER 2014

Editor’s comment Welcome to the September issue of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick. This month we celebrate the 9th year of our magazine and it’s nice to see how far we have come from that first issue all those years ago. Didn’t we have a fantastic summer? It was exceptional and I am hoping that the warmth of the summer months will spread into the autumn. We have lots to read in this month’s issue from the latest article by Judy Upton on ‘Travel Writers on Southwick’ to ‘Finances – making sense of it all’ by Claire Cook. We have the amazing Sussex Choir in this month’s issue. They are staging a series of open rehearsals this month aimed at both men and women, so if you love singing then this is an incredible opportunity. As we all know littering can be detrimental to wild life but also very unpleasant to look at. This month the Friends of Shoreham Beach are carrying a big beach clean on the 21st of September. More information can be found on the What’s On Pages on times and meeting point. On a final note I would like to thank all our contributors for this month. I hope you enjoy reading about all the events and activities taking place in Shoreham and Southwick. If you would like to have your event or activity in the October edition, please send copy by the 8th of September. We will endeavour to put it in the spotlight! I hope that you have a lovely September. Warm Regards, Angela

Ready, set, go! Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, Basepoint Shoreham, who provide managed office space in friendly, purposebuilt premises for small businesses, sponsored some activities at the three day ‘Shoreham River Fest’ celebrating life on the river. In its second year, the celebrations comprised a range of activities over a long weekend. On Sunday 24th August, Basepoint Shoreham worked with the Adur Outdoor Activities Centre to host their outdoor climbing wall event, which provided young and old participants the chance to sample rock climbing. The following day, the centre helped race organisers, Lancing Eagles Running Club, with their 10k River Run. The multi-terrain 10k course is open to runners of all abilities and follows a beautiful route along the banks of the River Adur through to South Downs Way. The run was fully marshalled, sign-posted with all the expertise and knowledge of a local running club (alongside support from St John’s Ambulance crews). Stephanie George, Centre Manager for Basepoint Shoreham and official starter of the race, commented: “We’ve been looking forward to getting involved with the River Fest and supporting the local community in what was an amazing weekend with many enjoying the incredible variety of activities that Shoreham has to offer.” For further information please visit www.basepoint.co.uk.

There will be a lunch break at 1pm, so bring a packed lunch or treat yourself to one of the numerous good eating places very near by. Water, juice and biscuits will be available. Say ‘konnichiwa’ to Japanese students The Shoreham based international language school, English Language Homestays, has welcomed its first group from Japan this week. The 56 Japanese students, plus tutors, are staying with host families across Shoreham to give them a real English family experience (from Sunday roast dinners to bangers and mash to Hot Dogs and Burgers from a “Hot Food Van!”), in addition to their classroom English lessons. This connection to Japan is another sign of the growing success of English Language Homestays, following on from their highly popular Short Stay season and the heavily oversubscribed Summer School that has seen students arrive from all over Europe. The continued success is also good news for Shoreham with staff, host families, local shops and many venues all benefitting from the extra income that the student business brings. Jackie Verrall, Managing Director of English Language Homestays, comments: “We are delighted to have attracted such a prestigious group from Japan to Shoreham and hope that this can be the start of a long term relationship with students from Japan. We hope that the Shoreham community will wish our wonderfully polite and friendly students a cheery ‘konnichiwa’ so that the word spreads about our lovely town.”

Sussex Ukulele Festival at the Duke of Wellington

Following the success of the first festival a second has been planned. The festival takes place at The Duke of Wellington Pub, Brighton Road, Shorehamby-Sea, (opposite Frosts Cars) between 1.00pm and 8.00pm on Sunday 21st September. The event starts with a large communal jam lead by visiting uke groups and members of the ‘uke@the duke’ jam. Uke@the duke meet every second Tuesday of the month and has many songbooks which can be downloaded from www.ukeattheduke. co.uk. For the festival it will be useful to bring along songbooks 8 and 9. Our regular meetings can attract up to sixty players and be enjoyed by anyone who has an interest in the instrument. Following the jam we have special appearances from ‘The Pukes’ a female ukulele punk ensemble and in contrast ‘Richard Durrant’ the local Shoreham virtuoso. Local folk trio ‘Blackcap’ and WOB will also make an appearance showing the wide range of music that can be achieved with the small instrument. There is a barbecue raffle and other attractions including the splendid range of beers the pub serves. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Finances – making sense of it all

M

ANY PEOPLE WAIT until a life changing time to see someone like me, for example when they want to move house, or are about to retire. I would happily see you at these times and help out, but often it is wise to make a review when these things are not occurring just to make sure you are in the right place with your finances. It can make a huge difference over a lifetime. Recently many people have been reviewing their pensions. I understand that the statements are easy to tuck away, and most are in language many would not understand, but this is your invested money. A pension review can have a real impact on your retirement income. Often people have several plans which have accumulated over the years. The good thing is that I am able to deal with your pension companies on your behalf, obtaining information and comparing your plans with the ones now available. You could be paying high charges, or languishing in funds which are not performing. At Talk Money we review your funds on an ongoing basis. It’s all part of the service. We also make sure that the risk you are taking is in line with your requirements, this is also monitored for you. All of this ensures that your money will be looked after from the point we arrange a pension for you. If you have investments, the story could be the same. With good intentions you could have invested in a Stocks & Shares ISA. How is this performing? Has it been reviewed and are you making the most of your tax free investments? Currently you can invest up to £15,000 in a Stocks & Shares ISA per financial year, many people don’t use this allowance. ISAs are a great way to save for your future as all growth is tax free. Again we can make sure you are invested in the right funds, and review this for you as an ongoing service. Once your finances are in place you can review the values and performance on our online client system, Enable. The system keeps you in touch with your money and allows you access to information and values at all times, for all your plans and in one place.

What about my other plans?

All of your financial products can be reviewed to make sure you are getting the best for your money. You may have direct debits for life or protection policies where you are unsure what the plan 6

covers. This can all be clarified for you. You could be paying for something which is no longer relevant to your situation, or if you arranged the policy directly you could be overpaying. Why pay for something which you don’t actually need?

What to do?

If you would like a simple, independent review of things, please give me a call. I can arrange to see you at home if you need. I am also offering a free initial consultation to Inside Shoreham and Southwick readers. My telephone number is 01273 224667. I would be very happy to help.

TRAVEL WRITERS ON…

A

SOUTHWICK

S WITH SHOREHAM, a number of travel writers in the first half of the 20th century, have provided us with fascinating accounts and descriptions of Southwick, when they visited or stayed there. John Cowper Powys, in his 1934 autobiography, remarked upon his first visit to Southwick to look for lodgings there, ‘Here there was a harbour — and oh how hard it was to row against its tide! It was simply a terrific volume of salt water, entering at top speed a long narrow backwater between the road and the beach and retreating in its allotted hour as it came in. I decided that Southwick should be my home!’ When Cowper Powys took rooms there above Mr Pollard’s grocer’s shop on Albion Street, then the main location of for Southwick’s shops, the view made a major impression on him: ‘– the open sea, the harbour, the backwater, the boat-builder’s yard and the unimposing little street! The bigger ships if I recall correctly, mostly Danish and Swedish, Dutch and Norwegian, used to anchor outside this Southwick Harbour; and it was the affair of Mr Pollard to race out in a rowing-boat. Contending with other grocers in order to be the first to obtain each ship’s business as it anchored’. Another writer who is taken by the view of the harbour was John Talbot White, who travelling through this area found that ‘Then it is all wharfs and quays and cranes and coastal shipping laden with cement and sand and lime and timber and oil lining the four and a half miles haven of the River Adur.’ Barbara Willard in 1965 book ‘Sussex’ talks of how the river Adur has Sussex’s only commercial port and enjoys the view of it afforded by the cliffs above Brighton that in those days could be seen from the top of an open top Tillings bus. She mentions

10

how it travelled between Rottingdean and Brighton along the road she found ‘perilously near the edge of the cliff’. ‘There stands the cliff sharp at Black Rock, framing the immense shallow bay that skims Brighton, swallows Hove, grows power stations at Shoreham and is finally checked at Worthing. At such a moment this is not by any means the ugliest stretch of coast you ever saw.’ The two power stations she mentions are a large one that had two tall chimneys and was built in 1947, and an older one sited nearby, that had four chimneys, and was built in 1902. This earlier power station did not become operational until 1905 and cost £350,000 to John Cowper Powys build. Both are now demolished, with the 1947 one being replaced with a smaller, more modern version. Arthur Mee in ‘Sussex’ (published in 1937) also mentions the harbour at Southwick and talks about the story that Charles II is supposed to have spent the night in a cottage in Southwick before fleeing to France via a boat from the beach. Mee also gives some interesting details about the remains of the Roman villa; ‘These Roman walls of the house are two to three feet thick, and it is thought that the house belonged to a rich landowner of the first century, and that it was the centre of a flourishing community here until the Saxon invasion brought ruin to the land.’ Esther Meynell in her 1947 book ‘Sussex’ also talks about Southwick’s Roman Villa, which was on land now partially occupied by Southwick Methodist Church and hall, on the east side of Southwick Street and roughly 400 metres south of Old Shoreham Road. ‘The villa at Southwick was first discovered so long ago as 1815, and at intervals pottery, mosaic and tiles were found and displayed, but no serious attention was paid to the site until over hundred years after its discovery, and in the meantime the relics found had completely disappeared.’ Later she praises Sussex Archaeological Trust for their work at the Roman Villa. Hopefully modern writers will continue to mention the town in future travelogues and guides for visitors, whether published as books or online. Judy Upton

THE COLOUR OF AUTUMN

A

S WE HANG on to the last few weeks of summer, it is quite apparent from the shortening days and the slight chill in the mornings that we are heading into the change from Summer to Autumn. I always enjoy this time of year as things tend to slow down in the garden, allowing you to try and make the most of the last few warm days and what’s in the garden before they are gone for the year again.

12

Unfortunately it’s also a time to be looking forward with a myriad of jobs to do to get the ready for winter and also for next spring. A lot of the jobs will concentrate on tidying up and clearing away the plants that have given so much pleasure. One of the biggest jobs to do is autumn pruning for many of the plants and fruits. Raspberry canes will need pruning back and many flowering plants such as roses need suckers pruned out and many hedges can be trimmed back. Pruning allows you to direct the plants growth into areas of the plant you want so it produces a better display next year. It also allows light and air around the plant helping to cut down the risk of disease. Also try and remove as much of the trimmings you produce as possible. Any diseased trimmings should be thrown away or burnt. Never be afraid to have a go at pruning a plant, and if you are unsure there are many good books and articles on the internet that give clear guides for each plant. This summer has been a pretty good one and most plants have performed well. They have also taken a lot out of the soil, so as you clear away old plants, give beds a top up with new compost. Mature shrubs and trees will also benefit from a liquid feed to give them a boost before the winter. Lawns are often overlooked during the summer as they take a lot of work to water this time of year is perfect for carrying out any repairs as they are more likely to take in the milder damper weather. If you do nothing else to the lawn give it a dose of autumn feed to help boost it. If you are minded to it is an excellent time of year to scarify it to remove the dead grass. It will look pretty patchy at first, but will soon thicken up. Keeping an eye on next year try and save seeds from plants that you have enjoyed this year before you remove the dead plants. An easy alternative to collecting the seeds is to shake the heads of the dead plants over the areas you want the flowers. It is a more random way of doing it, but a lot less work and it’s always a surprise where they pop up the following year. Autumn will march on quickly, so enjoy the best that the garden still has to give going into the wonderful autumnal colours, but try to keep on top of the simple small jobs, whilst the better weather is still with us. LOCAL EVENT REVIEW

WISTON STEAM RALLY It was full steam ahead at the annual Wiston Steam Rally in July. The rally took place in the grounds of Wiston House lying between Steyning and Storrington in West Sussex. Emma Smith reviews…

W

ITH COMFORTABLE SHOES at the ready, we entered the grounds and were immediately taken back to another era, the era of coal burning. The smell on entering the grounds is evocative, and feels like a warm overcoat. For me the smell has a very personal memory jolt. As a child my Auntie Dot and Uncle Don were the proud owners of a musical steam engine or a calliope as they are officially known. For my part this simply meant accompanying parents to various steam engine conventions where the calliope was brought out of the garage of their communal block of flats and displayed with pride. Even as a child I had reservations that this Photo: © Dean Cook was a suitable hobby for an occupier of a flat, and voiced my thoughts to said parents. Apparently it was the non-negotiable point for Uncle Don when Dot persuaded him to sell their farm and move to a more modern existence. The rally took place around a central arena. With different areas for special interests’. At the top of the field was a wondrous selection of vintage buses from Photo: © Dean Cook Leyland, Scania and Bristol. The living Vans and Caravans included a 1961 Sherman travelette folding caravan than didn’t look sufficiently sturdy to keep out an inquisitive fox. The display also had on show an extremely rare Romany Fortune Tellers bowtop caravan from the 1950’s making its 1st outing in public. Beautifully fitted out and decorated with classic Romany decorative flowers on deep burgundy background, set off with brass so shiny my grandmother would have been proud to buff up such a sheen. A fantastic classic car selection had on display the instantly recognisable BMW Isetta Bubble car, one of my personal favourites. Sat alongside were a fabulous varied display of great British cars; Jaguar, Daimler, Rolls Royce, Humber, Triumph,

22

Morris, MG, Aston Martin, and several types of Austin models. The selection being a historic display of our great British car heritage, and a reminder of how prolific we once were as a car producing country. There was also a handsome selection of classic motorbikes, including a special display from the BSA Bantam club. The central arena was the main Photo: © Dean Cook attraction. A well-timed display schedule provided the opportunity to sit back and have all the joys of the steam display brought and paraded in front of us. Miniature steam at 13:30 caught my eye, with some beautifully made mini versions of their enormous cousins. All with drivers mounted atop resembling giants out on a day trip. I had to think back to Dot and Don, perhaps these scaled down engines would have been a more suitable version of their hobby. The steam parade followed, displaying all the full-sized engines. It was a fine day but the grass had taken a toll from the overnight rain. With the smaller engines weighting in at 7 tonnes this has the effect of squeezing the soil like a sponge and releasing the water from the sodden soil. There were no massive hiccups, but the engines had to work harder to get through the soggy ground. In a way they were living up to their heritage, they were built to work hard and even in retirement they still had to put in the extra mile. Anne Whittingstall of Sussex Steam Shows said, “We had over 4,000 visitors over the two days with 650 exhibits on show including 37 traction engines. The weekend went very well.“ For an entry fee of £7, and £1 for a detailed programme, it’s well worth the trip. 2015 marks the fifth anniversary of Wiston Steam Rally, the organisers have a number of special events planned for the 1st weekend in July next year. WHY WEARABLE TECH

IS THE FUTURE

J

UST OVER 15 years ago, many of us were still excitedly dialling up our Internet connection and waiting for those pips, bleeps and other agonising noises to come from the desktop. These days, you’re probably in the minority if you still have a full-size PC at home. Technology is at once marvellous and spectacularly frightening. After you reach 25 there’s already a million and one things you don’t know about what’s possible with even basic computer equipment, which most of those younger will be familiar with. The pace of progress is staggering and thankfully, on top of making it easier to play Clash of the Clans, the perpetual march is genuinely improving life in many ways, and there’s no greater potential than in the field of healthcare. The obvious ideal is an Elysium -style gizmo that we lie in and have any ailments – from cancer to crabs – instantly cured. Of course that’s probably a few decades away (and then some), but nevertheless the marriage of tech and health is, in theory, a harmonious one. The more time and money we spend on developing ways in which our creations can help us maintain a clean bill of health, the more this will be possible. In addition to dividing opinion on whether Google Glass makes people look silly or not, wearable technology is arguable one of the most exciting and visible areas making inroads into the healthcare market. Samsung’s recently revealed Simband is a great example of exactly what we’re talking about. The device, which is a wristband with digital display, is still in its prototype stage, along with the Sami operating system (Samsung Architecture Multimedia Interactions), and already it poses a

26

pretty exciting prospect. The gadget is capable of providing a number of readouts to the wearer, informing them of various aspects of their body’s functions. Stress levels, sleep pattern, heart rate and blood pressure fall under the wellness category; onset of fatigue, calorie intake and hydration under nutrition; and the activity monitor tells you how many steps you’ve taken in a given period, the kcal reading of your last workout, and the day’s ‘onyour-feet-mileage’ in distance and hours. All of which may sound a little over the top, but given Britain’s notoriously unhealthy lifestyle, and the difference even just a few changes can make, we’d say devices like this could definitely help people make informed choices on what needs to be altered in order to stay in tip top condition.
