OCTOBER 2011
Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and Welcome to the October edition of Inside Shoreham and Southwick. As the evenings draws in, less time is spent outside especially on the wetter days. As for our front and back gardens still time to enjoy and of course get going with the latest ideas from Mark, on page 10, on what we could be doing as part of the autumnal tidy up. October is the spooky month with Halloween festivities. Pumpkins being made into lanterns to adorn our windows, trick a treating and fancy dressing. Although fun for young ones, there are the more vulnerable members of our community who find it distressing. On that note, the local policing officers have written some helpful pointers on having a successful event. Also, if you
are planning any fireworks at the end of this month there are some precautionary actions to make is a great success. This month are prizes to be won with the ‘Hunt the Lion’ Safari with the Adur East Lions on the 8th-15th. Why not take part and win some prizes. More information on page 4. We also have the latest historical article on the 14th Squadron by Judy Upton as well as some mortgage news with Claire Cook. On a final note, thank you for your continual support of the local businesses that advertise. We hope you enjoy this months issue. We always try to incorporate as much as possible of your local events and articles. Please continue to send them with deadline for November edition being October 12th. Happy Halloween, Angela

Lottery award supports action on disability issues in Adur
Hunt the Lion on the streets of Shoreham… G
o on a ‘Hunt the Lion’ Safari with Adur East Lions from 8-15 October by spotting the lions displayed in Shoreham shops and win prizes. It is often said that the Lions organisation is one of the best kept secrets and this year Lions Awareness Week is 8th - 16th October so this event has been organised to raise the profile of the organisation locally. It also coincides with World Sight Day on Thursday 13th October. The Lions have a number of sight-related projects including a partnership with Moorfields Eye Hospital in London supporting their cornea bank and providing eye ‘camps’ in developing countries. You can pick up an entry form in shops displaying the safari poster or from a Lion roaming the streets of Shoreham on Saturday 8th or 15th October. Those spotting all the lions will be entered into a draw for the prizes donated by the shops. (A new members’ information evening will be held at the Royal George, Shoreham, on November 2 from 7:30 p.m. For more information go to www.adureastlions.org.uk.)
A
dur Voluntary Action (AVA), working in conjunction with the Council's Wellbeing Team, has been awarded £9,124 to undertake work around disability issues in Adur. The application for funding, to the Big Lottery's 'Awards for All' programme, followed a comprehensive review of the situation locally last year by Adur District Council's Overview & Scrutiny Committee. The subsequent report 'Disability Issues Review – Is the Adur District a Disability Friendly Place' made seventeen recommendations. Amongst the report's recommendations were the need to develop a local 'Access & Mobility Group', an 'Access Guide' to shops and services and a 'Disability Access Awards Scheme'. AVA were keen to take forward these particular recommendations as they very much reflected their general support and development role to the local voluntary sector. For Adur council, working in partnership with a voluntary agency, it provided an opportunity to bring additional funding into the area – Adur is a designated 'cold-spot' for lottery applications. A lot of information on the accessibility of local shops and services was gathered during the disability review and the first task of the bid, developed jointly by AVA and Council staff, is to look at getting that published on the web. Gaps in the scope of the information, together with the need to check its accuracy, will provide an opportunity to involve volunteers in developing this strand of the project’s work. Individuals with a disability who live in Adur, or representatives from any disability groups covering this area, wanting to get involved with this initiative should contact either: Adrian Barritt, adrian@adurva.org or John Kelly, john.kelly@adur-worthing.gov.uk 4
LIVE WELL WITH THE ADUR WORTHING HUBS
B
rand new Wellbeing Hubs in Adur and Worthing are set to open their doors to offer 'one-stop' help for adults and families wanting healthier lifestyles. Funded by West Sussex County Council and the NHS, the Hubs, part of seven across the County, provide 'face-to-face' contact with the public and help them 'tap' into a huge range of wellbeing services. Both Hubs will be working to support the more vulnerable members of the community as well, especially those living in areas of deprivation and at risk of poor health. Cabinet member for health and well-being, David Simmons said: "This really is the Big Society in Action, bringing together the statutory, public and voluntary organisations to help make our communities healthier. It's in all our interests to look after our health, and the new Health and Well-Being Hub gives everyone the opportunity to find that special piece of advice. You can either self refer, or be referred by a health professional. Why not give it a try and see how you can improve your own life?" Worthing cabinet member for health, and well-being, Tom Wye, adds: "Whether our residents want to stop smoking, loose weight or change their diet or perhaps just want to speak to someone because life’s too stressful our wellbeing team is there to help - its all about feeling good, being able to make informed choices and taking care of yourself!" Judith Wright, director of public health and wellbeing for West Sussex, says: "It's important that everyone across the county, no matter where they live, has the best opportunity to lead a healthy life. The launch of the Wellbeing services across West Sussex is a positive step towards providing people with easier access to information about what's on offer locally. The Wellbeing teams will be able to point individuals in the right direction for local services ranging from specialist stop smoking services, weightloss programmes and support for those feeling isolated." "Supporting people to improve their health and wellbeing like this at an early stage reduces the risk of people developing long term conditions later on in life and results in an overall healthier and happier population." If you feel you feel you would benefit from some help why not contact your local Adur or Worthing Wellbeing Hub team on 01903 221450 or email them on: info@adur-worthingwellbeing.org.uk To advertise call: 01273 452065
Neighbourhood Policing HALLOWEEN CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE While Halloween can undoubtedly be a great deal of fun, it can also be a particularly distressing time of year for some of the more vulnerable members of our communities — especially the elderly. With this in mind, the Sussex Police Service is urging trick or treaters to think carefully about which doors they knock on this Halloween. Better still, why not just stay at home and have a Halloween themed party with your friends and neighbours! If you do decide to go trick or treating, please respect the wishes of any household displaying a 'No Trick or Treat' poster. When trick or treating you should also stay as safe as possible by following the 'Halloween Code': • Always go trick or treating with an adult • Only go to houses where you or your friends know the residents • Don’t knock on doors where there is a NO TRICK OR TREAT sign • Stay in areas that are well lit with street lights – take a torch with you just in case • Stay with your friends – don’t split into smaller groups unless an adult goes with you • Don’t talk to strangers on the street • Don’t enter any houses stay on the doorstep • Be careful not to frighten vulnerable people, especially the elderly • Be visible • Look carefully before crossing the roads
• Don’t vandalise anything or throw things like eggs and flour. This can cause a great deal of damage and misery. What’s more it can be classed as criminal damage, or even assault, and a night of fun could end up with you in trouble with the police. If you would like a “NO TRICK OR TREET“ sign for your door, please visit your local Police station where they can be collected.
As bonfire night approaches we at Sussex Police can expect more calls from the public than normal. These often relate to the anti social use of fireworks, the throwing of them, and fires built and set alight, during the time period fireworks go on sale, which is between 15th October – 10th November.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Need a mortgage? Be prepared I
f you are looking for a mortgage, then be prepared. The credit crunch has forced lenders to tighten up their act when assessing new borrowers, so it is imperative your adviser has the right facts when assessing which lender is right for you. You can play a bit part in making your application smooth and trouble free, simply by having all of the correct information and paperwork to hand. It used to be that you could apply for a mortgage and as long as you had a good credit score the lender would ask for nothing further, but things have changed. Not only are mortgages harder to come by, the lender will normally ask for further paperwork to prove that you are a worthy borrower.
The process If you see an independent adviser, they will recommend the right type of rate for your situation, ie fixed or variable. They will also recommend the right lender for you in terms of lending policy and rate. Bear in mind that your adviser will be dealing with all the different lenders, so they will know the service standards and any lending policy quirks which could affect your application. Your adviser will normally submit your case online, this ensures that your case is immediately with the lender. Your case will then be passed to an underwriter. They will assess your file and decide what is needed in terms of paperwork from you. Most lenders now need the following items, so be prepared. If you are employed, dig out your payslips, especially if you need to prove any bonus or overtime. Self employed people should have their net profit figures ready, normally lenders will require the last three years’. Your last one to three months Bank statements are often required. If you have buy to let properties, often tenancy agreements are needed. You should also bring your Passport or Driving Licence and a recent utility bill or bank statement showing your name and where you live. No adviser can do a mortgage for you without checking these items. One other thing, make sure you are registered on the Voters Roll, this is a requirement of most, if not all lenders. Many lenders are also asking for bank statements which tell a lot about your lifestyle and spending habits, so if you think you might want a mortgage soon, be aware. Most lenders don’t mind you being in overdraft, but if you exceed the limit this can cause problems. 8
In Summary Your adviser needs correct and accurate information to get the best deal for you. It is always best if they can send your paperwork to the lender in one go. Sending up bits at a time can increase the chance of some going missing, or waiting several turnaround times instead of just one. Being prepared can seriously reduce your stress levels when applying for a mortgage and get you a quick and hassle free offer. If you need advice on a mortgage or any other financial issue, for independent advice and a free initial consultation call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. An Autumnal tidy up S
ummer wasn’t great and we are definitely into Autumnal weather now, having experienced some very changeable weather with high winds over the last weeks. As the season turns its time to start looking ahead again to prepare for the onset of the colder months and less activity in the garden. Rather than a spring clean, an autumn clear up throughout the garden will pay dividends, both in keeping the garden healthy and making it look tidy through the months ahead, when there may be less opportunity to get out into the garden. Don’t be afraid to be ruthless. If there are plants that have long been past there best, don’t be afraid to get rid of them to make way for new ones. Empty pots and containers of dead annuals and empty out the soil. This can be added onto any beds to help bulk them out. Its always a good idea to put terracotta pots away where the frost cant reach them. If any are damaged and unlikely to be used, then throw them away. A good tidy up through the beds will pay dividends as well. Once again dig out plants that are no longer worth keeping and give the surface of the soil a good rake through to remove dead leaves. This will help keep diseases down. It’s also a good time to start getting some extra compost forked into the beds, or for an easier option, simply rake the compost across the top of the beds. You’ll be amazed how much of it gets pulled down into the soil by your friendly 10
garden worms. Carry out autumn pruning on shrubs that need it. Don’t be afraid to prune back hard. Most plants will respond well and put on better growth next year. Make sure you remove all the waste you generate from the beds. Once the beds are clear it will leave you with a much better idea of what new planting you can fit into the bed. Most lawns seem to have done better this year with the wetter cooler summer. It’s still a good idea to give them some attention to prepare them for next year. A good rake through will remove moss and dead grass, allowing the lawn to breath more easily. It’s also a good time of year to get an autumn feed onto the lawn to give it a much needed boost. Continue to cut the lawn in preparation for winter. Any bare patches can be replaced with turf, or by seeding. This time of year is very good for seeding as the soil is still warm and the moisture gives a much quicker and steadier growth rate. On the subject of a good clear out, give the greenhouse and the shed a good clean out now. This is especially important with the green house. Once emptied give all the surfaces a good wash down. This will prevent it harbouring diseases that can be passed on to next years plants. If the work in the shed and the greenhouse are done now, it means you will have a clear and tidy space to work in the colder wetter months. As always in the garden, it’s about
enjoying what you have now, but looking head to make life easy and keeping the garden in a state where you can enjoy it in the future. It never ends. Mark Oakley Any Garden Limited

The History Of 14 Squadron
I
n 1915 the Royal Flying Corps was urgently in need of a greater number of pilots and planes to provide battlefield support in World War I. New squadrons were quickly formed by bringing semi-trained pilots together with RFC training squadron pilots. On the 3rd February 1915 No. 14 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps was created at Shoreham Aerodrome by Captain Alexander Ross-Hume from members of Number 3 Reserve Aeroplane Squadron. Using Maurice Farman S.11 and B.E.2 aircraft, they prepared for combat, moving firstly to Hounslow Heath, then to Gosport. Here along with 17 Squadron the unit was commanded by Colonel Geoffrey Salmond. The squadron trained for most of the year. Then in the November the pilots and planes headed out for Egypt, as it was in the Middle East that the aerial support was most needed to give support to the army units on the ground. At Heliopolis in Egypt, 14 Squadron was equipped with BE2c aircraft, and their tasks included patrolling the Sinai desert, on the look out for Turkish attacks, and taking aerial photographs that could be used to accurately map the region. In 1916 several D.H.1A two seater fighters joined the squadron and a year later it was equipped with Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8s to perform reconnaissance duties. It was recalled to the UK in January 1919 and disbanded the following month. 14 Squadron re-appeared once more only a year later, flying Bristol fighters. It took up for air policing and photo surveying duties in Trans-Jordan and Palestine for the next twenty years. During this time 14 Squadron adopted the Arabic motto 'I spread my wings and keep my promise', an extract from the Koran suggested by the Emir of Transjordan. On the outbreak of World War II the unit was sent to Egypt, then back to Amman before flying on to Port Sudan from where on the 11th June 1940, its planes carried out a raid on the Italian air base at Massawa. Convoy protection duties over the Red Sea followed, as did more raids on the Italian forces in the region. When Germany invaded Crete, 14 Squadron extended their missions into this area too. The difficult conditions and large number of operations meant that by June 1941 of the original16 crew and 20 aircraft, only four crews and three aircraft remained. Equipped with the new Martin B26 Marauder planes the
12
squadron then switched its attention to the Mediterranean area. In April 1943, 14 Squadron was awarded a Standard by King George VI. As ground forces advanced across North Africa and into Italy, the Squadron shot down a number of ME323 “Gigant” transport aircraft. In September 1944, pilots from 14 Squadron spotted the Italian Liner Rex and thwarted its bid to blockade Trieste harbour. The squadron was again disbanded on the 1st June 1945 but was reborn the same day, when No. 143 Squadron was renumbered. It was again disbanded on the 31st March 1946. The following day however No.128 Squadron was renumbered No.14 Squadron and the name lived on. Shortly after the war the squadron provided an air courier service for the War Trials at Nuremburg. From here on they were based in Germany. In June 1970, 14 Squadron moved to RAF Bruggen and were equipped with the supersonic McDonnell-Douglas F4M Phantom FGR2. While still based at Bruggen in Germany, the squadron was assigned a nuclear delivery role should tactical nuclear weapons ever be used. In 1986 the Squadron began to fly twelve Tornado GR.1s. Their nuclear role is believed to have ended around 1994, and they were re-armed with conventional bombs. In August 1990, the Squadron was sent to Bahrain when Iraqi invaded Kuwait. 14 Squadron finally returned to the UK in January 2001 and operated from RAF Lossiemouth. Their role was now to carry out precision bombings in the post 9/11 conflicts. In March 2011 a single, fully armed Tornado from 14 Squadron carried out a flypast at Shoreham Airport. After a low, slow pass above Shoreham’s runway, it powered up to screech over the terminal building. This was a tribute to the Squadron being founded at Shoreham and a commemoration marking 14 Squadron’s last year of operation. Originally more than one plane had planned to take part in the fly past, but the other Tornados were unable to attend, being engaged in the Middle East due the unrest there. Some of the ground crew were able to attend the event however. 14 Squadron was finally disbanded on 1 June 2011 as part of the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review, ending an almost 100 year history that had begun at Shoreham. Five Fascinating Facts about…Starlings

on’t miss one of nature’s greatest spectacles this autumn – the cloud-like formation of huge numbers of starlings as they congregate at dusk before settling at their roosts. One of the best places in
Sussex to witness their dazzling aerial display is on Brighton seafront as they roost on both the Palace and West Piers. 1 Starlings appear black at a distance but when seen closer are very
glossy with a sheen of purples and greens 2 They have a reputation for being one of the noisiest and most gregarious garden birds often spending a lot of the year in flocks 3 Their numbers almost double every winter with the arrival of thousands of migrant starlings from Eastern Europe escaping the harsh cold of the continent 4 As the afternoon light fades individual flocks unite to make a progressively larger mass or murmuration of starlings that swirl and swoop to their night time roost 5 They are expert mimics and often fool unsuspecting humans by imitating ring tones and car alarms If you would like to tell us about the wildlife you see please visit the wildlife advice pages on our website www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk Alternatively if you have a wildlife query ring Sussex Wildlife Trust’s information hotline - WildCall - on 01273 494777.

Ordinary people – amazing things Y
our Community needs you. You have probably heard of the Lions Club, the biggest service organisation in the world. They are inviting you to go along and find out more about who they are and what they do. The Lions have been in existence in Adur for over 50 years and has raised thousands of pounds for national and 16
international causes. However, much of their time is spent helping those around us with small things that can make an enormous difference to their lives. Perhaps driving elderly people to a Christmas dinner or a coach trip out with a cream tea, donating money for dressing up clothes to a local playgroup or providing a stair gate to a needy parent
Aside from fund raising they also enjoy a good social scene with various activities ranging from quizzes, theatre trips, skittles and wine tasting to learning to play croquet, a surprisingly fun evening for all who took part. Fund raising can also be fun: they run a Greyhound Charity night once a year and have run the Transport Fayre at Buckingham Park, Shoreham for the last 32 years. Both of these require a lot of organising but are also enjoyable for all involved. D Reeves opens new flooring shop I
n August D.Reeves Flooring opened its doors for the first time in its new premises at 2 North Street, Portslade, providing and fitting all types of vinyl, laminate and carpets. The business is family run with Darren Reeves doing the measuring and fitting and his wife, Emma, running the new shop so customers can be assured of a friendly, helpful and personal approach. Working as a carpet fitter for 16 years for several of the major local companies gave Darren a lot of experience in fitting all forms of flooring. Darren realised that as a small local independent flooring company he can provide a much more personal service and really cater for the needs of his clients. Therefore two years ago Darren decided to set up on his own and so he started up his mobile showroom providing and fitting all forms of flooring to customers in the local area. Business expanded and as the next step, Darren was on the lookout for a premises when an opportunity came up for shop on the corner of North Street and Boundary Road Portslade. The new shop has a wide range of flooring available and all stock is kept in warehouses with most orders being 22
delivered and fitted within the week. Because there are so many shades and textures of flooring to choose from Darren and Emma still offer their home selection service to help people make their selection as often it is easier to see the choices in the setting it will be in. All quotes are free, with no obligation and evening times are available by appointment. Flooring is available in all price ranges. There are carpets for somebody who wants something basic yet hard wearing for a rental property right upto top of the line wool and everything in between, all weights and styles and colors at a great value.
This includes the new 100% carefree carpets with Advanced Wipe Clean Technology which can be easily cleaned, even with bleach, British made and upto 10 years manufacturers warranty. Darren and Emma are aware of the economy right now and the need for good standard carpeting and flooring that will brighten any space at a fair price. Offering a reasonable price on everything they carry, together with a professional, friendly service and a 2 year guarantee on all fitting means that D Reeves Flooring is the place to go for all your flooring needs.
