World Sight Day
A
COLLABORATION BETWEEN two local charities– Adur East Lions and 4SIGHT – has resulted in an exciting awareness-raising event in order to celebrate World Sight Day is taking place at Shoreham Methodist Church Hall, Brunswick Road Shoreham By Sea on Saturday 12 October from 10am-12pm. Tim Laughton, MP for East Worthing and Shoreham will open the proceedings by attempting to make a jam sandwich while wearing a blindfold to draw attention to the difficulties blind and partially-sighted people have whilst performing everyday tasks. Mike Mendoza, Chairman of Adur Council will also try his hand at this event later in the morning. The Lions support a number of organisations that either try to prevent blindness or support those who are blind are partially sighted. Did you know that it was a Lion who invented the white stick? Projects in this country include providing funding to Moorfields Hospital and collecting used spectacles from opticians, money raised being given back to sight charities. Did you know that Adur Talking News has been a recipient of this funding? On Saturday 12 October you will be able to… • Buy cakes, plants, bric-a-brac, Xmas gifts, tea and coffee • Attempt to make a jam sandwich whilst wearing a blindfold • Try on simulation spectacles to get a better idea of what vision people with some sight conditions have • Meet representatives from both organisations to get a better understanding of what they do • Meet a guide dog for the blind (and its owner) • Find out more about the Lions (and maybe win a prize) You can find out more about these organisations by visiting their websites: Adureastlions.org.uk and 4sight.org.uk
Royal ceremony for offical Adur Ferry Bridge opening
T
HE ‘GRAND OPENING’ of the Adur Ferry Bridge in Shoreham-By-Sea is set for Wednesday, November 13. HRH The Duke of Gloucester will come to the town to unveil the landmark bridge at an official ceremony. Full details of the event will be announced by West Sussex County Council nearer the time. County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Pieter Montyn, said: “We are delighted to announce to everyone the date of the official opening ceremony. To have the honour of welcoming the Duke to open such an iconic structure is fitting. Thousands of people will benefit from using the Adur Ferry Bridge each day and it will be an asset to the people of Shoreham-By-Sea for decades to come.” West Sussex County Council is still keen to open the bridge to the public beforehand. It has been prevented from doing this so far because the glass supplier, responsible for the glass in the bridge’s balustrade, ceased trading. The County Council has since changed supplier and the remaining work is expected to be completed in the coming weeks. The replacement bus service will continue as normal until the bridge opens. A film documenting the progress of the bridge has been released to mark the occasion. The video, produced by County Council contractor Osborne, outlines the background behind the new bridge’s development and details the challenges faced during the construction of the project. Osborne’s Delivery Director, Derek Thornhill, said: “Osborne is proud to have played an integral part in the delivery of this magnificent bridge for the people of Shoreham. The unique position of balancing both marine and land based operations has been a challenge and with tidal surges of up to seven metres our dedicated staff have worked many early and late shifts to get the work done during the low tide periods." To view the film visit Youtube and type ‘Adur Ferry Bridge’ into the search bar.

Fascinating facts about Eider Ducks
Best known for providing us with feathers for eiderdowns (before the introduction of synthetic materials) the eider duck is a true sea duck, rarely found away from coasts. • are the UK’s heaviest duck, and its fastest flying • are bulky with a wedge-shaped bill. Males have a black and white plumage with a pale green patch at the back of their necks, the females are brown • dive underwater to feed on shellfish, especially mussels, found in shallow waters off rocky coastlines. They eat mussels by swallowing them whole; the shells are then crushed in their gizzard and excreted • a particularly famous colony of eider ducks live on the Farne Islands in Northumberland. These birds were the subject of one of the first ever bird protection laws, established by Saint Cuthbert in the year 676. About 1,000 pairs still nest there every year and are Northumberland’s emblem bird • the soft, fluffy down, which the mother duck plucks from her chest to line her nest, is collected after the ducklings have left the nest to provide stuffing for pillows and quilts If you would like to tell us about your wildlife experiences visit the wildlife advice pages on Sussex Widlife Trust's website. There’s an easy online recording form for your sightings and the data is passed to the Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre enabling us to build up a picture of where our wildlife is living. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Tips to speed up your mortgage offer W
HEN PEOPLE APPLY for a mortgage they often ask the question “how long will it take”. This is a difficult question to answer, and is often dependent on many factors. In my article today I will explain some of the processes lenders go through to produce the ultimate “mortgage offer”. When you apply for a mortgage, a lender will first make enquiries into your credit history and will check your last three years addresses. It is always wise if you are thinking of buying in the future that you register on the electoral register at each address you live at, even if you are renting. That way the lender can see where you have lived and can find a history for you. When the lender does a credit check, they will be able to see any loans or credit you have outstanding, and whether you have paid up to date. It is worthwhile setting up direct debits for any credit cards you have, as a late payment will show up on your credit record. So make sure you make payments on time, any blip can affect the lending decision. The next thing a lender will look at is your income and how long you have worked with your current employer. If you are self employed they will need to know your net profit since your business started and the start date of your business. They will require payslips, or accounts.
We, as your advisers would be liaising with the lender throughout the process to ensure that the offer is issued as quickly as possible. Once you have applied, the lender will send a surveyor to the property to value it. This satisfies the lender that the property is suitable for them and is worth what has been stated. Be careful if you are buying an unusual property, for example a studio flat, a flat above a shop, or a flat in a block with more than 4 storeys. Lenders can be choosy about which properties they will lend on. Again, your adviser will help you with this. Once the lender has all of the above information and they are happy, they will issue a mortgage offer to you. We, as your advisers would be liaising with the lender throughout the process to ensure that the offer is issued as quickly as 6
possible. In answer to the original question, some lenders can offer within days, especially those who have online systems, others can take much longer. If time is a critical issue to you, we can take this into account when we place your mortgage. If you require any advice regarding mortgages or other financial matters, please call me Claire Cook and my team on 01273 224667. We offer a free initial consultation and we would be very happy to help. Talk Money is a trading style of Best Practice IFA Group which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The Shoreham Parish Poorhouse I
N 1716, THERE is mention of a Poor House or Almshouse existing on the site where Shoreham Library now stands, beside Pond Road. Almshouses were established from the 10th century in Britain, to provide a place of residence for poor and elderly people. The first recorded almshouse was founded in York by King Athelstan. Providing for the poor had long been a challenge in England. This responsibility was placed on the parish officials in 1531, though in the early years, each parish handled matters as they saw fit, since laws regulating dealing with the poor were not enacted until 1597, 1598, and 1601. The 1601 system was modified over the years, with Settlement Laws added in 1662, which meant a person’s parish of origin was the one responsible for helping them. Monies for the poor were collected by an appointed person from those who had land or property in each parish. The amount to pay was assessed according to the value of their land or property. At the time of the parish poor house, this area of Shoreham was a field known as Burrscroft (the name later taken by the now closed retirement home to the north of the site) and it was also known as Pigeon Croft Field. It is possible that the medieval hospital of St. James was also once situated on this same site. In the Middle Ages, the majority of hospitals also functioned as almshouses. Prior to 1600, responsibility for poor relief rested early on with the feudal Lord and later the Manorial Lord. King Henry VIII's break with the Catholic Church led to the establishment of the Church of England in 1534, and this led to a shift to the English parish for responsibility for the poor. In rural parishes like Shoreham, the enclosure acts from the 1750s, which allowed landowners to fence in their lands, preventing ordinary people from grazing their own livestock and growing their own crops, meant an increasing number of people suffered poverty and hardship. At this time, relief for those too ill or too old to work was in the form of a payment, or items of food ('the parish loaf') or clothing, also known as outdoor relief. Some aged people might be accommodated in parish almshouses such as the Shoreham one however. Meanwhile able-bodied beggars who refused work were often placed in Houses of Correction or even subjected to beatings. There is mention of the Shoreham Poor House again in 1718, and 1745, when bills were presented for scouring its
8
well and erecting a fence. In 1755, it is recorded that the parish of Shoreham is greatly in debt after having enlarged and repaired the almshouse, so clearly the number of people falling into poverty and seeking assistance to avoid starvation was growing at this time. From 1861 there are no further records of an almshouise on the Burrscroft site. However a new Union Workhouse opened in Ham Road in 1836, and would have been its replacement. The Poor Law Amendment Act had been passed in 1834 by the government of Lord Melbourne. This new poor law was aimed at reducing the burden on rate payers and can be seen as an attempt by the Whig government to win the votes of the classes enfranchised by the Great Reform Act. Despite being labeled an "amendment act" it completely overhauled the existing system and established a Poor Law Commission to oversee the national operation of the system. This included the forming together of small parishes such as Shoreham and Steyning into Poor Law Unions and the building of workhouses in each union for the giving of poor relief. Although the aim of the legislation was to reduce costs to rate payers, one area not reformed was the method of financing of the Poor Law system which continued to be paid for by levying a "poor rate" on the property owning classes. No able-bodied person was to receive money or other help from the Poor Law authorities except in a workhouse, so now there were no handouts of bread or clothes at the poorhouse gates. Conditions in the workshouse were to be made harsh to discourage people from claiming help. People dreaded having to enter the workhouse as families were split up, even small children were take from their mothers, food was inadequate and the work was boring, hard and degrading. The Ham Road workhouse served both the Shoreham and Steyning area parishes and when larger premises were needed at the end of the 18th century, a set of new buildings was constructed on the site of what is now Southlands Hospital. It was then known as the Steyning Institution. The original Ham Road building, known as St. Wilfrid’s, continued to house the children of those who entered the workhouse. Despite numerous scandals and outcries about the harsh conditions in workhouses, they were not abolished in Britain until the Local Government Act of 1929. Judy Upton

Preparing for winter I
around so quickly, with the temptation to shut up shop and hide for the winter. If you do that you are likely to miss some of the best cold crisp sunny days in the garden and more importantly the opportunity to get ready for the next year Looking ahead in the garden is vitally important as nature doesn’t stand still and the seasonal cycle seems to come round quicker than ever (or maybe I’m just getting older!). This time of year is a great opportunity to get the beds cleared and ready for next year. Once you’ve cleared the beds and got some more compost in, then why not get some spring bulbs in ready to make a real splash of colour next year. It can be confusing knowing what to put where, so I always go with the simple advice, if you like the look of it and the colour, then put what you want in your garden. These days with so many programs offering advice on the TV and on the internet, I often find people get themselves tied up in knots as what to put where and what the current trend is. To my mind there is nothing better than seeing a garden with a large range of colour in it. Sometimes the best gardens are the ones that have no order to them, and have just evolved, rather than the ones meticulously planned out. After all that’s how Mother Nature tends to do it! As well as planting bulbs for next year, you can also plant up spring bedding plants such as pansies, wall flowers and forget me knots. You can also sow your own if you have a greenhouse, ready for next year. Sweet peas can be sown now to give a good early display. Autumn is always a good time for planting new shrubs and roses in the garden, as the ground is easier to work and there is more moisture so they will take a lot easier. The soil tends to still be at a higher temperature which also helps the plants to take well. Make sure you use plenty of new compost and give them a covering of bark chippings to help keep the warmth and moisture in. So from doom and gloom of looking to winter, by planning ahead you can look to the first bursts of colour in the garden in late winter and early spring. Blink and you could almost miss winter altogether! Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

T WOULD SEEM after a good summer we are having a rather more usual autumn with cooler days and some rather wet ones as well. We are also heading towards the much shorter days and the evenings are set to get darker quicker with the changing of the clocks. This always seems to herald the start of the feel of winter, which seems to come

If the shoe fits...
This month Karen, the podiatrist at First Foot Clinic, talks about the importance of Footwear: Footwear is a common contributing factor in many foot complaints. An American study called "If the shoe fits, wear it" found that nine out of ten women are wearing shoes that are too small and, after the age of 60, some 70% of women will have osteoarthritis problems in their feet. Whilst women do appear to have more footwear related problems, men also have footwear related problems too. As you get older, your feet tend to spread, but few women get them measured after the age of 20. Foot problems most commonly appear in the 40s, 50s, and 60s following decades of persevering with poorly fitting footwear. If social expectations of women's appearance and the sort of shoes that are "acceptable" changed, then there would be far fewer foot problems. Quick Tips to Remember when Shoe Shopping: • Make sure you can wiggle your toes inside your shoes • Feet tend to swell a little during the day, so buy shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest • Buy the right shoe for the purpose • If you wear insoles (orthotics) or feel you may need insoles, buy shoes with removable footbeds to ensure room for your foot as well as the insole (your podiatrist can assess you for insoles) • Buying shoes in a “Sale” may save money, but could cost your feet dearly. Ensure they fit correctly.

Verdi’s Macbeth
5th, 6th, 8th and 9th November 2013 The Barn Theatre, Southwick
S
OUTHWICK OPERA IS thrilled to be presenting Verdi’s Macbeth. Written when Verdi was only in his thirties, it boasts one of his most beautiful and lyrical scores and remains largely faithful to Shakespeare’s great play. This opera demands singers of great dramatic and vocal ability and Southwick Opera is truly fortunate to have Christopher Parke and Jacquelyn Fugelle as the murderous Macbeths and Stephen Caira as Macbeth’s nemesis, Macduff,. All three of these singers have sung principal roles at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, English National Opera and Scottish Opera and bring their skill and experience to this exciting production. Stephen Hawkesley and Calum Jones join them as Banquo and Malcolm, and with the Southwick chorus of over thirty singers, you can be assured of a musical and visual feast. Macbeth and Banquo, leaders of the Scottish army, meet a group of witches who greet Macbeth as King of Scotland. They tell Banquo that he will be the father of kings. Lady Macbeth reads a letter from Macbeth telling her of the witches’ prophecy. On his return home, she tells him that King Duncan must die. Macbeth commits the murder, aided by his wife. Malcolm, son of the murdered King, flees and Macbeth takes the throne. Assassins hired by Macbeth murder Banquo but his young son escapes. Warned by the witches, Macbeth plots to kill Macduff’s wife and children. Macduff joins the Scottish refugees after hearing that his family has been murdered and with Malcolm, leads an army against Macbeth. Haunted by her actions, Lady Macbeth takes her own life. Macduff kills Macbeth and Malcolm is proclaimed King of Scotland. Verdi’s Macbeth is a story of ambition, treachery and murder, and the addition of beautiful arias and dramatic chorus work makes this one of the most exciting and beautiful of all his operas.
