Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and welcome to the November edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine In the past year we have seen Shoreham East Street pedestrianised. This has made it a lovely area for residents and local shops. Such an injection of creativity is vital for the area to flourish. We are now seeing the development of the new footbridge. Naturally we still have to see the end result but it should definitely make a statement for all visitors to the area. You may also have heard or read about the plans for a new car park near the South side of the Footbridge and the new plans for Ferry road which will be receiving a well deserved face lift. This is great news for the area and will certainly help to create an environment that is definitely more aesthetic. You can read more about the latest on the projects planned for Shoreham in this issue.

This month as always there is so much to do in the Shoreham and Southwick and surrounding areas. With Christmas not too far off in the distance, a matter of weeks there are local fairs to visit this up coming month. Great opportunity to support a local charity and get Christmas presents. On a final note, we have all our local articles and local historical piece in this months issue as well as our local businesses. Together we can create a thriving community. We hope that you have a good read and have a great month despite the weather! Please send us any news, activities for December by the 12th November. Until then, Angela P.S As well as delivering copies through as many doors as possible you can find Inside Magazine at the Southwick Community, Shoreham Community & Kingston Buci Centres and Shoreham Library.

Inspiring girls to get active in Adur

A

fter a successful summer of women’s sport, Adur & Worthing Councils Sportivate Girls Fitness courses are set to continue the legacy. Research undertaken by the WSFF has shown that the London 2012 Olympics inspired 41% of young women to be more active! Official figures show that just 12% of 14 year old girls are reaching the recommended levels of physical activity – half the number of boys at the same age. (Source: Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation, 2012). The Sportivate Girls Fitness programme will provide opportunities for girls aged 14-18 to try something new whilst improving their fitness and having fun! Courses will be 8 weeks long and incentives for regular attendance will be offered. Councillor Dave Simmons says “At a time when young people spend a great deal of time in front of computers for both studies and leisure, this provides encouragement to change their lifestyle and participate in activities which will have a far reaching and positive effect on their good health and well-being.” Sportivate Girls Fitness runs every Monday from 29th October – 17th December at Southwick Leisure Centre, 16:45 -17:45. The course costs £12 for 8 sessions. If you sign up with a friend, you’ll each only pay £8 for the whole course! For more information or to book a space please contact Lucy Adams, Active Communities Officer, Adur & Worthing Councils at lucy.adams@adur-worthing. gov.uk or on 01273 263174.

Footbridge to remain closed

S

horeham footbridge will remain closed to the general public. The northern end of the bridge was removed last month ahead of the construction of the abutment for the new bridge. County Council engineers have subsequently assessed the condition of the existing footbridge and concluded it was not safe for public use. County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Pieter Montyn, said: “The County Council appreciates the inconvenience this will cause. “However, despite the best efforts of everyone concerned to keep the footbridge open, it is in a worse condition than was expected. “In the interest of public safety the footbridge will now remain closed until it can be fully demolished.” A shuttle bus service will be maintained throughout the closure period and the County Council has sought an improved service for those with mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs who are unable to access the shuttle bus service. The replacement bridge is still on track to open in summer 2013.

Working together in times of emergency T

he floods that struck parts of Sussex in June year brought it home to those communities how important it is to plan for when an emergency might happen. A sudden major incident can leave the emergency services overstretched or physically unable to reach some communities for hours. That is when local communities need to be prepared with local parish councils or neighbourhood groups taking a lead. West Sussex’s county Fire Officer Max Hood points out. “The blue light services will always respond to emergencies but the sheer scale of some incidents means control rooms can become swamped with 999 calls and requests for assistance. For example, the torrential rain and flooding we experienced in parts of West Sussex in June this year resulted in over 1,000 emergency calls to our control room in just a 24hr period,” “At times like this when emergency resources are clearly stretched, communities and individuals can make a big difference locally by planning ahead and preparing for emergencies before they happen. In its simplest terms, this is precisely what we mean by building ‘community resilience’. “Encouraging self-help can reduce property damage and emotional loss when personal possessions are ruined, and it helps the emergency services to prioritise its efforts to those people most in need — those vulnerable residents who may need help to get themselves out of danger,” he said. Community resilience relies on being able, in an emergency, to tap into the wealth of local knowledge that every community has. It is being able to identify where the most vulnerable residents live and when they may be at risk, knowing who is willing to help and what resources are at hand if needed. This may include access to 4x4 vehicles, boats and qualified chain saw operators. Community leaders, neighbourhood representatives and local councillors are being invited to attend the Community Resilience Seminar on Thursday 25 October at County Hall North, Horsham. This is being held in partnership with Acton in Rural Sussex, the Sussex Association of Local Councils and local Sussex Resilience Forum representatives. Participants will be given an insight in to how a community can help itself in an emergency and how a community resilience plan can ensure the community is better prepared. “Parish and town councils with their communities have a key role to play in any emergency and the conference provides an opportunity to discuss the team working that is required in any emergency situation. We are hoping that as many communities as possible will be able to attend so that we can share experiences and identify key roles and responsibilities,” said Teresa Gittins of Action in rural Sussex. Vision for £150,000 make-over of Shoreham Beach street P

lans for a £150,000 makeover on Shoreham Beach have missed a vital opportunity, according to a community group. Public consultation on a scheme to improve Ferry Road has opened, but the Shoreham Slipways Group (SSG) said it does not include the slipway it campaigned to secure planning permission for earlier this year. Brendan Whelan, SSG chairman, said: “One of the reasons for calling in consultants was to ensure that changes provided access to the new slipway. Unfortunately, no reference is made to the slipway, and it isn’t even shown as a dotted outline.” He went on to say the proposals, which have been put together by BDP, which

designed the new-look East Street, did have positives. “For example, the changes will provide an area from which to see the very attractive view of central of Shoreham,” he said. The scheme, commissioned by Adur district and West Sussex county councils, aims to improve the look of Ferry Road and the Lower Beach Road carpark, where the new bridge, will land. In consultation material, BDP said: “These are part of the well-used pedestrian connection between Shoreham town centre and Shoreham Beach, and will complete the overall enhancement of this route, which includes East Street and the new footbridge.”

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

Fixed rates reduce further D

id you know that the fixed rates on offer now are lower than we have seen in years, if ever! If you want to secure your mortgage payments, now is a great time to shop around. The Chancellor’s scheme to pump £80bn into the mortgage market is now starting to show through. Rates have been reducing as lenders vie to secure their market share. Not only have the Government put money in, it is at a seriously low rate. The lenders can secure more money by lending more, giving them a great incentive. More competition means reduced rates, which is great news for everyone. The low fixed rates on offer, combined with the recent standard variable rate increases have seen a lot of activity in the remortgage market. Imagine, it could be possible to reduce the rate you are paying and also fix it for a good period of time. Did you know that the five year fixed rates are as low as 3.09%?* This is lower than the standard variable rates of many of the top lenders. A fixed rate would shelter you from rate rises for a set period of time. This can give peace of mind in challenging times especially when rates are likely to rise. You could check out fixed rates over varying terms, for example 2,3 or 5 years. The longer term fixed rates will normally be higher, but even this margin has reduced recently. The longer term fixed rates are only marginally more, making a longer term deal much more attractive. As always in the current market, the more equity you have the better deal you can secure.

In summary There have been some fantastic fixed rate deals recently launched, so if you are in the right situation, with the right amount of equity , you could find an extremely competitive deal right now. If you would like independent advice on any financial issue mentioned, whatever your situation, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to help. * Source Trigold Buy to let mortgages are not regulated by the Finanicial Services Authority. Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You

What is the process? Remortgaging involves moving your mortgage from your current lender to another. You may think it sounds stressful and time consuming, but the process is very simple and straightforward. Many lenders now have online systems, often meaning an instant decision and a quick offer.

And the cost? Many people think that it will cost less to stay with their current lender and fix, not necessarily so. Most deals on offer even from your existing lender will involve an arrangement fee. This fee will be similar to the arrangement fee a new lender would charge. Many remortgage deals also offer free legal costs and free valuations, this keeps the overall cost down. So, for the same cost you could find yourself with a much more competitive rate. Why restrict yourself with your own lender’s choice when you could choose from the whole of the market? 8

Shoreham Lighthouse

T

he history of lighthouses began with flaming beacons that were lit to make ships aware of the position of harbours. It was only later that they also began to warn of dangers such as rocks and reefs. The earliest lighthouse known to exist was at Pharos in Egypt. It was 446 feet tall it was constructed between 283BC and 247BC. Britain’s first lighthouse did not appear until 1328 however, when St. Catherine’s Lighthouse was built on the Isle of Wight. This lighthouse came about on orders of the Pope, after the local landowner was found guilty of selling wine owned by a monastery that had come from a ship wrecked on the rocks at St. Catherine’s Point. In the 13th century, the Corporation of Trinity House was formed, which is still today responsible for the upkeep and operation of lighthouses and lightships. Levies were often imposed on ships using a particular harbour to pay for the upkeep of its lighthouse. Although Trinity House had to give permission for a lighthouse to be built, they were often constructed by private landowners. There was no standard design, so they come in all shapes and sizes around the coast of Britain. Today, Trinity House operates Britain’s major lighthouses that warn shipping of reefs, rocks and hazardous waters. Smaller lighthouses, marking harbour entrances and used to provide ships with navigation, rather warn of dangers, are usually the responsibility of local port authorities, and that includes Shoreham Lighthouse. Shoreham Lighthouse was built in 1846 and is operated by Shoreham Port Authority. The tower is 42 feet tall and built of limestone. A narrow balcony surrounds the lantern, which was completely refurbished in 1985. The flashing light is visible for ten miles out to sea. Originally the light was an oil-burning lamp, before becoming a gaslight, and finally an electric lantern. Until into the 20th century there was a part-time lighthouse keeper at Shoreham, as before the introduction of automated timers, the light had to be switched on and off manually: on in the evening and off the next morning. Also both the oil and gas lamps needed regular maintenance, with the oil needing to be replenished and gas mantles replaced. The door in the building leads to a steep staircase up to the lamp. Shutters on the lantern could also be manually adjusted by turning a handle upon ascending the stairs. Shoreham can however also boast a second lighthouse,

though this one is no longer situated in the vicinity and is a much more unusual structure. Nab Tower, once known as one of Shoreham’s ‘Mystery Towers’ was while under construction a near neighbour of our lighthouse. Designed as one of a planned eight heavily fortified sea towers in War World I, the war ended with only the one tower completed. Designed by G. Menzies, the Nab Tower finally found a use in 1920, when it was towed out of the harbour by steam tugs and sunk in the Solent, to be Trinity House’s replacement for the stormdamaged Nab lightship. As well as guiding shipping into Portsmouth and Southampton harbours, and helping them avoid the dangerous Nab’s rock, it was assumed the fortified tower might come in useful to protect the ports from enemy attack. It only had to wait until World War II to see action, when two bofors guns were mounted on its tower, and it finally took a wartime role, shooting down enemy planes. To adapt the Nab Tower for lighthouse duties, two clockwork, rotating lights were mounted on turrets on its top deck, though now it just has one short red tower, constructed in 1983. Also until that year, a crew of four manned the Nab Tower lighthouse, but now it too is automated. The large flat top of the tower allows for a helipad, and since 1995 it was also housed solar panels, which now power the lantern. The light can be seen for sixteen miles and the tower also has a foghorn. In 1999 the tower was damaged after a ship collided with it but it has since been repaired. Judy Upton

Prepare for the cold I

ts November already and were starting to slide into the beginning of winter with the short days upon us now the clocks have gone back. The temperatures are on the slide and we’ve still got very wet feet! I always feel like November is one of the crucial months in the garden, since by the end of this month, the garden starts to take a back seat in peoples mind as we almost go into hibernation, with the distraction of Christmas, until we get into the New Year. It’s really important to have a good go in the garden and get things sorted before the worst of the weather hits. One of the biggest enemy’s in the garden at this time of year is frost. It effects virtually everything in the garden, not just plants, so taking simple measures now, will help to prevent damage to much loved plants and ornaments or expensive damage to fixtures such as taps. If you have plants that are likely to be affected and they can be moved in their pot then move them. Inside to a greenhouse is best, but if not, then move them near to a south facing wall. The heat the wall gets from the sun during the day will help to keep the temperature in that are just a little bit warmer and can make the difference for a plant. If a plant can’t be moved and you feel it needs some protection, then wrapping with fleece, or sacking is a good way to protect them. Luckily grass isn’t affected by frost, however if you walk on a lawn after a very heavy frost it can damage the grass, 16

so try and stay off of affected areas. Frost will also damage ornamental pots in the garden, even frost proof pots can be damaged by very low temperatures, and so wrapping a well-loved pot in bubble wrap can help prevent damage. Don’t forget to protect any taps or water pipes outside, you can buy kits that are quite cheap to do this, or simply wrapping them with bubble wrap will also help as a cheap alternative. Drain down hose pipes and put them inside for winter, and if you have any sort of irrigation kits, drain these down as well, and most importantly take timers off of the system or again wrap these to protect them, as they will split and can be expensive to replace. Another area that can suffer are ponds when they ice up. Don’t forget to put a rubber ball in the water. This allows a little expansion in the ice and helps to prevent damage to the liner as well as making it easy to remove and provide a breathing hole for the pond. We had several instances last year of ponds being emptied where clients had left pumps on during very icy spells. This resulted in the pumps draining out the pond under the ice and the water simply being pumped across the surface of the ice and draining away, leaving the pond empty. Despite all the problems frost can cause it can also do a lot of good for the garden, helping to break up dug over soil, and kill many of the pests and diseases that are prevalent in the garden, so as always in the garden, Mother Nature seems to balance everything out. If you spend time getting

ready for it then it will help minimize its bad effects and you can enjoy the really cold days. Mark Oakley Any Garden Limited

Neighbourhood Policing Shoreham Burglary Burglary in Shoreham has seen a recent increase in the area. Over 20 homes have now been broken in to and property has been stolen. In around half of the cases entry to property was gained through insecurity’s such as open windows and doors. This sort of crime can cause serious distress to its victims and leaves people feeling unsafe in their own home. Our message to the community is “if you suspect it report it”. If you see torch light or hear noises call the police for us to investigate. It is important to ensure that your home is as secure as possible. Here are some handy tips to help secure your home. • Before leaving your home or going to bed take the time to have a walk around and check that windows all your windows and doors are closed and locked. • Leave expensive items such as laptops, Ipods and jewellery out of sight. • As Christmas approaches keep gifts out of sight to prevent temptation. • Always leave a light on and a radio on a talk station. This will give the impression that people are home. • Use an ultra violet marker to post code expensive items like laptops, tv’s and consoles • Take photos of jewellery for insurance and identification purposes.

Fireworks and the law

Using fireworks legally

It is against the law to: • set off or throw fireworks in the street or other public place • set off fireworks between 11pm – 7am ( midnight on 5th November)

Firework safety checklist

As bonfire night approaches we at Sussex Police can expect more calls from the public than normal. These often relate to the anti social use of fireworks, the throwing of them, and fires built and set alight, during the time period fireworks go on sale, which is between 15th October – 10th November.

So what is the law?

If you are under 18 years of age, you can’t: • buy fireworks except sparklers. • have fireworks in a public place • any person (not firework professional) to possess display firework.

Figures show that more children than adults get hurt by fireworks. If you are having fireworks as part of your celebration, you should follow the steps below. • Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114. • Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks. • Keep fireworks in a closed box. • Follow the instructions on each firework. • Light at arm's length, using a taper. • Stand well back. • Never go near a firework that has been lit.
