Become Santa for a day
L
OCAL RESIDENTS, BUSINESSES and community groups are invited to once again take part in the St Barnabas House ‘Wear a Santa Suit Day’ on Friday 13 December. For just a £10 donation to the hospice, recipients will be provided with a Santa outfit, fundraising pack and the opportunity to have fun with friends and colleagues whilst raising money for a good cause. This is the third St Barnabas House Hospice ‘Wear a Santa Suit Day’ and in 2012 participants helped raise over £12,000. Dog walkers, office and shop workers, school teachers, fitness instructors and even the Mayor are all amongst those who have taken part
4
and completed their day to day tasks dressed as Santa Claus. The largest group to take part in 2012 was Southern Water as 130 employees all donned their Santa outfits throughout the day. This year child-sized Santa suits are also available meaning families can take part in the event together along with playgroups and children at schools. Groups and businesses are also especially welcome to register as this can lead to some creative photo opportunities. St Barnabas’ aim is to have the streets of Worthing, Goring, Durrington, Rustington, Littlehampton, Lancing, Shoreham, Southwick, Storrington, Henfield, West Chiltington, Ashington, Steyning and the rest of Worthing, Adur and Arun taken over by Santas. Richard Bartram, Community Safety Officer at Arun District Council, will this year be taking part in his third ‘Wear a Santa Suit Day’ and he has so far raised over £500 for the charity. He comments: “It’s all about giving something back. St Barnabas cared dearly for my wife before she passed away so I’m fully behind the Wear a Santa Suit Day
and other programmes which help raise money for the charity. The most interesting experience for me so far was in 2012 when the Wear a Santa Suit Day coincided with our office Christmas do. This meant I was tenpin bowling in Chichester dressed as Santa!” Neil Francis, Community Fundraising Manager at St Barnabas House comments: “We can’t thank our supporters enough for throwing themselves into the festive spirit over the past two years and helping raise vital funds for St Barnabas. However, we need more people like Richard to join in, have a bit of fun and dress up as Santa for the day on Friday 13 December. Our target is to exceed last year’s £12,000 total and also to break Southern Water’s record for the largest group taking part.” For more details on how to register for the event please call 01903 254777 or emailfundraising@ stbh.org.uk. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Is it time to review your finances? R
ECENTLY SAW THE Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee keep the rate at the all time low of 0.5%, it has been at this level since March 2009. The low rates together with the Government schemes to encourage people onto the housing market seem to be feeding through. The new Help to Buy guarantee scheme will no doubt increase activity further by allowing more first time buyers back into the market. Things are looking and feeling a lot more positive. Not only that, people who already have mortgages still know what to do when their initial interest rate ends, they are checking out the market to ensure they have the best deal possible. There could be no better time for your current rate to end, you may find yourself on a similar rate, or even lower than your previous deal, and not only that you could fix it for some time to come. The Government Funding for Lending scheme is providing capital to lenders at a very low rate, this is feeding through to the new deals. It is now possible to fix at very low rates indeed, and many people are taking up the opportunity. This is especially true if you are lucky enough to have plenty of equity in your property. You are the people lenders are still looking for, and their rates reflect this.

Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You
A financial overhaul? By making a financial review there can be great savings to be made. Not only your mortgage, but out of date policies can be a waste of money especially if your situation has changed. For example, you may have taken life cover when you were a smoker, but have since given up. You may have taken income protection, and your employment status has changed, or you could simply be overpaying because you took your policy out with an adviser who is tied to one life company, meaning you may not have the best deal in the market. A substantial saving could be made each month. These examples are quite common, and there are many more.
What can I do to help? As an independent financial adviser I deal with the whole spectrum of financial advice. I can check out your mortgage and also any plans you currently hold. I will make sure the cover is relevant to you and is within your budget. I have access to the whole market place, so I can compare your 6

Alice Louisa Dudeney A
LICE LOUISA DUDENEY, was born Alice Whiffin on the 21st of October 1864, to Frederick Whiffin, a master tailor, and his wife Susan Howe in Brighton. She was educated at Hurstpierpoint. A novellist and short story writer, she used the pen name Mrs Henry Dudeney, after her husband Henry Dudeney, a writer and inventor of mathematical puzzles, whom she married at the age of eighteen. Her first child sadly died at only four months old, and a second daughter Margery was born in 1890. In her lifetime Alice Dudeney’s portrayals of Sussex rural life were compared to those of Thomas Hardy’s Wessex. She started her writing career by contributing short stories to the magazine ‘Cassell’s Saturday Journal’. Later she was contracted by the publisher Collins to produce a novel a year. The Dudeneys at this time decided to move out of London and rent a cottage near the village of Billingshurst. They soon discovered they preferred life in rural Sussex and developed an interest in collecting antiques. Alice Dudeney’s books often touched upon social issues affecting the English working and lower middle classes, particularly those affecting women. She was fearless in her subject matter writing about extra-marital affairs, sexual abuse and illegitimacy. She was described by her publishers as "the novelist of the Weald and the Marsh and the Down Countries”. She was seen as a Victorian feminist, and called "one of the most powerful writers of fiction among modern English women" by the influential Putnam’s Magazine. As Dudeney's success as a writer grew, the money from her writing provided for much of the family's income. By the turn of the 20th century, her popularity had gained she and Henry entry to both literary and court circles. In her 1914 her novel ‘What A Woman Wants’, Dudeney descibed the lives of female characters living in Shoreham-
8
by-Sea, and here as in many of her books, she touched on the subject of unhappy marriages. This was an area that was very close to home as Alice Dudeney’s own marriage to Henry was a troubled one. In 1911, while living in Surrey, Alice had an affair with a married man, the artist Paul David Hardy. She and Henry separated, with Alice and her daughter moving to Angmering. Five years later however the couple reconciled and set up home together again in Lewes, finally moving to Castle Precincts House in 1916. In 1928, Arthur St. John Adcock wrote of Alice Dudeney’s work, "no woman novelist today writes more objectively or with a stronger imaginative realism in the creation of character and the designing of a story". Alice Dudeney produced around 50 novels in her lifetime. Among them are ‘The Secret Son’ which is also set in Shoreham and published on 1915 and ‘Quince Alley’, her own favourite of her books, which is set just outside Steyning. In her most popular novel ‘Brighton Beach’ published in 1928, a forty year old woman lives her life backwards, and the plot hinges around a dramatic incident that occurred on Brighton beach. Her 1929 novel ‘The Peep Show’ was adapted into a Broadway show by the playwright Elsie Schauffler. After her husband Henry's death in 1930, Alice Dudeney remained in Lewes and continued writing up until 1937. She died on the 21st November 1945, after suffering a stroke and was buried alongside her husband in the Lewes town cemetery. Their grave is marked by a copy of an 18th-century Sussex sandstone obelisk, which Alice had made after Henry's death to serve as their mutual tombstone. In 1998, Dudeney's personal diaries were published posthumously and titled ‘A Lewes Diary: 1916-1944’. They described her life living in Lewes with Henry Dudeney prior to and during the interwar years. This book's success saw renewed interest in her work and resulted in the reprinting of several of her novels in 2008 and 2009. Judy Upton

November garden H
ERE WE ARE into November already and if you haven’t said it already it certainly gets dark early, now the clocks have changed. With the lack of heat and daylight the garden will now be fast putting itself asleep as it prepares for winter. Taking your lead off of Mother Nature in the garden is a pretty good way to garden effectively all year round. Let’s face if a plant doesn’t like being grown in a certain position, it will give you warning signs, and no matter how many attempts you make the results will be pretty much the same. It never more
12
true than in the winter months, when you just have to look a little more carefully for the signs. By now we are starting to get the first frosts. It’s well worth taking notice of these as they can be one of the quickest and effective ways of losing plants. If you’ve got any vulnerable plants in pots that you want to protect then either move them to the greenhouse, cover them, or at least move them by a sunny wall where they will get the heat off of the wall. Larger less hardy shrubs such as palms can be covered, with fleece and the centers protected with straw. We are fairly lucky on the coast as we are somewhat protected by the downs and the warmer temperature of the sea, so it really is a matter of personal choice as to whether you wrap larger plants or leave them to take their chances. If you have a greenhouse, then consider insulating it with bubble wrap to help keep the temperature up. After all you’ve gone to the effort of moving plants in there to protect them, so it’s a shame to let them die in there. Bubble wrap is also an effective way of protecting plants that are outside, and also larger terracotta pots as they can be very badly affected by the frost. Whatever you wrap plants in, it is essential that they still have a flow of air to allow them to breathe and avoid problems with mould and fungal infections. You can also consider a heater to help keep the frost off. If you use a paraffin heater, make sure you leave ventilation going through the green house as they produce a lot of moisture and they do give off carbon monoxide, which can be deadly. If you have an old heater that’s seen better days then it may well be wiser to treat yourself to a new one. As Mother Nature has a habit of balancing it’s worth remembering that frost do a lot of good in the garden as well. They help kill off pests and diseases that would otherwise overwinter in the beds to cause problems next year. They also help considerably in breaking up ground that has been roughly dug over, well worth taking into account as you dig extra compost into the beds ready for next year. Whilst we may curse the frost, it also can create some spectacular scenes in the garden that give a completely different perspective on how the garden looks, so as much as you can enjoy it and make the best of it, because we will have it for a few months yet! Jerusalem
T
HE SOUTHWICK PLAYERS are proud to present Jerusalem, the Olivier and Tony Award winning hit British comedy written by Jez Butterworth. First performed in 2009 Jerusalem is wildly original. In part a lament about the erosion of country life and in part a rebuff to the antiseptic modern world. On St George’s Day, the morning of the local country fair, Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron, local waster and Lord of Misrule, is a wanted man. The council officials want to serve ‘Rooster’ an eviction notice on his home, a trailer in the woods. His son wants to be taken to the fair and a motley crew 22
of his mates want his ample supply of drugs and alcohol whilst being regaled by his tales. On top of this a vengeful father suspects him of leading his underage daughter astray and wants to give him a serious kicking. He can spin a yarn for sure and has always kept himself afloat with his menacing charm, cunning and a wealth of outlandish mythical stories, but how will he dig himself out of the hole this time and save his home from being demolished? This multi-award winning play was a West End and Broadway phenomenon and received huge critical acclaim.
“The best new play of the decade” The Mail “Hilarious, moving and inspired” Daily Telegraph “An extraordinary moment in British drama” Sunday Times “One of the most exciting new plays in ages” The New York Times “Refreshing, humane, touching and wickedly funny” Evening Standard Director Claire Lewis said “All these reviews can’t be wrong.” She continued “In September Jerusalem was in The Times list of the 20 most influential plays in theatre history. In historical order, starting with ‘Oedipus the King’ from 429BC and finishing with ‘Jerusalem’ from 2009." “It’s a favourite of mine and one that I have wanted to direct for some time. The set is amazing. The Players workshop team have built a rundown old caravan from scratch and cleverly created woodland to surround it.” Paul Mason, Economics Editor for BBC Newsnight blogged “Jerusalem ...... is real. The plasterer, the DJ, the weekend drug dealer, the ex-squaddie looking to work abroad, the bored abattoir slaughter man - are mainstream figures in the real English workforce and down the real English pub. Also real is the effing and blinding which discomforted the mainstream theatre critics. The swear word count in Jerusalem is actually low compared to reality, and is generally genial, compared to reality, where it is often aggressive, racist and violent. This, then, is the real English spoken by something close to the majority of real people… Jerusalem will go down as one of the great plays of the decade.” Tickets are now available for this must see, adults only show. Performed by The Southwick Players at the Barn Theatre, Southwick from Wednesday 4th to Saturday 7th December 2013. Tickets £10.00/£11.00, available from the Box Office on 01273 597094, or online at www.southwickplayers.org.uk (no booking fee). To advertise call: 01273 452065
