SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK
NOVEMBER 2014
Editor’s comment Hello and Welcome to the November Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. If you made it to the Shoreham Beach firework display last year you will know that it was a fantastic display and not to be missed, with this years display on the 8th of November. Its completely free and funded by donations and sponsorship It starts at 6.30pm at Beach Green and then goes onto the Church of Good Shepherd where there will be catering vans and of course hot drinks. Since this is the month for fireworks, there are several others taking place in Shoreham!. There is the Family firework display at Buckingham Park on the 6th starting at 5pm until 7pm; and on the Friday the 7th East Brook Primary Academy in Southwick is also doing a grand firework display for all the family. All are raising funds for their relevant causes, so I hope that you will be able to make all of them. Following on from that, we also have all the fairs and community events listed and promoted in the magazine as we head into Christmas. With only 7 weeks to go it is great opportunity to purchase that special gift for a love one. So, check out the What’s On Pages for times and places. We also have latest from Mark Oakley on gardening in November; Judy Upton’s article on the Old Dovecote as well as Jeannette’s review of the Marlipins. Infact there is much to read in this months issue. Big thank you to all our contributors! Our deadline for the December issue is the 12th of November. We look forward to hearing from you. Warm Wishes, Angela

Do you like history, research and writing? Then you could be what we are looking for. Next year Shoreham lifeboat station celebrates its 150th anniversary and we are putting together a book to mark this momentous occasion. The book will cover the last 150 years of the station from its beginnings, the war years, its memorable services right up to 2015 and its anniversary events. We need volunteers who have the time to research the history, collate information and write some sections of the book. Shoreham lifeboat operations manager Keith Phelps said: “We are slowly progressing with the book but there is still plenty to do and we could really do with some help. “2015 will be a momentous year for the lifeboat station as it celebrates its 150th anniversary and a book depicting its history would be a fitting tribute.” If you would be interested in helping and getting involved, please contact the lifeboat operations manager Keith Phelps on 07973 561608.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Investments and Pensions – are you an orphan client? I F YOU HAVE investments or pensions, are you truly receiving the help and support you believe you need? Many people tell me they have difficulty speaking to their adviser, perhaps they are being passed from person to person, or maybe after time they have lost track of the person who originally advised them. If you have life policies, pensions or investments, normally the provider will have a note of the adviser who arranged it. Sometimes you may have arranged plans through various advisers throughout time and have several companies linked to your policies. If your adviser has stopped trading there is an actual term; you could be an orphan client. If this is you, who do you approach for help when you need it? Things can become very disjointed, often it is only when something changes that people want to put the whole thing together and take stock. This could be at a time of a life change, such as retirement or moving house. Whatever the case, it is normally wise to try and get a coherent view of your finances. It is also important to have a central place you can go to for advice from someone who can see your whole situation; something we can now do at the touch of a button. At Talk Money, our systems can keep all of your investments and plans listed in one place, they can keep track of your funds and calculate exactly what you have invested in different areas, what risk level you are taking, and if you are exposed to one area in particular. For example you may have several investments and don’t realise much is invested in, for example, equities, or property. When investing we believe it is important to diversify your investments, this means that you would be invested in several different areas. The systems now can monitor this and give an overall view across all of the investments and pensions you have. In essence, the systems now can give a very clear overall view of your finances. Your funds can be diversified, reviewed and managed more easily than in the past. Not only do we monitor the performance but also the risk profile to make sure it stays at the right level for you. If you like to go online, you can check the values, keeping you in much better contact with your money. Apart from all of this, I believe one of the most important things is good service. In today’s world of phone queues
6
and automated messages, to be able to pick up the phone to someone who knows you, understands your situation and can deal with all your investments in one place is invaluable. For a free initial consultation and independent advice on any financial matter please call me, Claire Cook, on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. Talk Money is a trading style of Aspect 8 Ltd, which is an appointed representative of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the amount invested.

THE DOVECOTE AT DOWNSWAY T HE OLD DOVECOTE is the only building remaining intact from the once extensive Little Buckingham Farm at Old Shoreham. This building, whose exact age is not known is now located in isolation in front of the modern houses of Downsway in North Shoreham. At the height of their popularity there were twenty six thousand agricultural dovecotes in Britain. Now less than five hundred of the structures remain countrywide. These dovecotes are not to be confused with the small ornamental, wooden constructions often attached to roofs on displayed on poles, in which a few ornamental pigeons or doves are kept. These are instead substantial buildings designed for the breeding and raising of pigeons on a large scale in a similar way to the farming of chickens and other poultry. The reason dovecotes were so popular is that until around 1730, when the storage of winter root crops was improved, there was little food available from the fields over winter. Most grazing livestock had to be slaughtered before the cold months commenced, as grass does not grow and holds little nutritional value over winter. Valuable animals would be retained for breeding and fed precious hay, but pigeons or doves could be kept cheaply through the colder months and provided a fresh supply of meat all year round. Pigeons were first kept in the centuries B.C around the Mediterranean area, but it was the Normans who first introduced the dovecote to Britain. Norman dovecotes were round and solid buildings with stonewalls up to three feet thick. The design of dovecotes evolved through the centuries but the basic details remained the same, though each one is individual in its construction. Dovecotes were often originally owned by the lords of the manor and also the clergy. Right up until the decline of the pigeon as a source of meat, only these people had the means to build dovecotes, and they did not intentionally share the birds with their workers. Indeed the birds ate the same grain used for the bread the peasants ate, and landowners would often keep back a good deal of the corn that could have been feeding the poor, to fatten their pigeons. If a hapless peasant happened to
10
kill one of their boss’s pigeons they might, if it happened three times, be sentenced to death. Surviving dovecotes in Britain tend to be found in the grounds of ancient manor houses, as at Little Buckingham, or beside buildings such as monasteries. It is highly unusual in the case of Little Buckingham that only the dovecote has survived. Within the brick or stonewalls of the dovecote are a hundred to a thousand or more nesting spaces built in the walls. The Little Buckingham dovecote is lined on the inside with chalk, with holes for the pigeons all around the interior. Pigeons will happily construct a nest if given a ledge or shelf high enough off the ground to do so, as can be observed beneath our railway bridges and the flyover today, where their feral cousins live and breed in similar circumstances. The earliest dovecotes were round, though square and rectangular ones were built later. The birds enter either through a slatted lantern-shaped entrance at the highest point of the pitched roof, as in the Shoreham dovecote, or else through windows or small holes, high in the walls. Pigeons instinctively place their nests at a height that affords them and their young protection against all but airborne predators, and farmhands collecting young birds (known as squabs) for the pot, would have needed ladders to do so. Little Buckingham Farm dovecote once had a granary building behind it, which was built on timber stilts with steep stairs to its interior to keep rats and mice at bay. The dovecote faced on to the area containing the farm’s pond where ducks were kept and cattle came to drink. Hayricks were built nearby at harvest time and surrounding buildings included a feed store, stalls for cattle, a dairy and stabling for both racehorses and heavy horses. These and the rest of this substantial farm were demolished in the 1950s. The dovecote was used as an armoury for a brief time during World War 1 and until quite recently still had a sign on the door explaining it was being used for this purpose. Judy Upton

PREPARING YOUR GARDEN FOR WINTER
W
ELL ITS WINTER then! The early dark nights are here with the change of the clocks. Still in only a few months we will be past mid-winter and the days will start getting longer. It sounds strange but it soon comes round and nature doesn’t stand still in the garden for anyone, so keep on top of the jobs in the garden. On a slightly gloomy note we have still got to get through the colder months that can cause so much damage in the garden with sharp frosts and snow. As always now is the time to act. Last year we were very lucky with virtually no frost, although those with flooded gardens, might not have felt so lucky. In this area we are relatively lucky with the sea giving higher temperatures
12
that can help to keep the worst of the frosts at bay, but even one nights frost can be enough to kill off your cherished plant. Smaller plants can be moved into the green house to protect them. Hopefully the green house has already been cleaned out. A layer of cheap bubble wrap acts as a wonderful insulation layer secured under the glass. If you don’t have a greenhouse, clear plastic bags upturned over the plant and pot can work well, as can moving it next to a south facing wall, where the heat from the day helps to keep it a little warmer. If the plant can’t be moved then it be protected In-situ. Tall vulnerable plants such as Cordylines and Palms, can be protected by tying the fronds up, in much the same way a Christmas tree is stored in the shops. It can be wrapped in a layer of sacking, or horticultural fleece, and the centre of the plant protected with a good few handfuls of straw. It doesn’t hurt to occasionally loosen it all off to let the air circulate as well. Having experienced all the wet weather last year it would be wise to learn a lesson from it and be prepared for anything remotely similar with the wetter weather. Make sure shed roofs have no leaks. Don’t leave plants standing in pots in puddles of water, or in pots that don’t drain properly. It’s the quickest way to drown a perfectly good plant During the colder weather the wildlife so precious to the garden can really suffer. If you take some steps now it can really boost their survival chances. A simple log pile in a hidden corner of the garden can be a wonderful hiding place for all manner of insects and smaller animals during the winter. If you are going to feed animals such as birds over winter, make sure you do it regularly and most importantly don’t forget to give them a source of water. Also be careful when clearing the garden if you are having bonfires, as small creatures can crawl in these to hibernate. We need to make an effort to look after any wildlife in the garden as it plays such a crucial role in the garden It’s well worth protecting items in the garden as well as plants from damage. Pots that are not frost proof can be saved from damage by covering or moving them into the shed. If you have an irrigation system, then now is the time to have it serviced and drained down. Like wise outside taps can be simply insulated, and hosepipes should be left drained down to avoid them splitting. Just spending a few hours preparing now, can save disappointment and extra expense in the spring, it only takes a few hours to do and it’s well worth it. PHYSIO ADVICE
IS WORKING ON YOUR COMPUTER A PAIN IN THE NECK? In the first of a new series of articles local physiotherapist, Louis Jones, offers posture advice.
I
N THE LAST 2-3 years, I have seen more and more people who are suffering with neck and back pain. More surprising is that most of my clients who have a neck or back injury, or symptoms associated with it, for example shoulder and arm pain, pins and needles and numbness, sit all day looking at a computer screen. How can sitting cause so much of a problem? We associate problems with our necks and backs, with manual jobs, where we have to constantly bend, twist or lift heavy. Although this can certainly be a contributing factor, the reason sitting has become a major cause for concern, is well… our posture isn’t very good.
What is posture?
Your posture is the position you hold when you lie, sit or stand, against gravity, which can put a strain on the body, so your muscles must be strong enough to overcome your body’s natural resistance in order to support and protect you.
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

Poor posture can lead to stress and overuse injuries, which can be very debilitating and not only be painful, but can also affect our social and sporting lives. Posture is learned, and we can change our habits, in order to improve our posture. Often, our workstations are not set up effectively to optimize a good posture or position.
How can we improve our posture?
Firstly we can adapt our work stations, i.e. our desks, computer screen, keyboard and where our stationary is, in order to contribute to better posture. Below is a checklist of important changes you can make to your desk set up, which can help you reduce your risks of developing neck and back pain, or reducing your pain, if you already have it. 1. Your head should be balanced through your spine, and not in front of your body, as this will cause your neck muscles to work in order to support your head. 2. The top of your screen should be approximately eye level. 3. Your screen should be arms length from you. 4. Your chair should be almost upright, and you should sit back in your chair, so you can relax. There should be lumbar support to allow you to maintain correct spinal posture (s-shaped curve), which will help bring your shoulders and neck into correct alignment. 5. Your forearms should be parallel to and resting on your desk. Therefore chair armrests should be lowered, allowing you to sit closer to your desk. 6. Your chair should be at a height so that your hips are very slightly higher than your knees, to assist with your posture. 7. There should be a small space between your chair and backs of legs. 8. Your feet should be able to rest flat on the floor, otherwise a footstool or rest may be required.
Secondly, there are specific products you can buy if you use a laptop and cannot easily adapt the height of your computer screen, such as a Laptop Set, see www.posturite .co.uk for details. Lumbar rolls, are useful accessories and less expensive alternatives to getting a new office chair, which acts like a cushion to help support your lower back and encourage you to sit in a better alignment. Other ways you can improve your posture are to practice Pilates, which teaches you good posture awareness through strengthening exercises to improve core strength. You can buy books or DVD’s that teach you basics, see a local Pilates teacher on a one to one or group setting, and there are a number of good resources online, for example videos on YouTube. Posturite are offering a discount on their products, by using a discount code at checkout, which is “PHYSIO15”, at www.posturite.co.uk. If this article is relevant to you, and if you would like to know anymore information, or to book an appointment, please feel free to call my clinic on 01273467614. If you bring this article with you to your appointment a 10% discount will be applied. To advertise call: 01273 452065

GETTING TO KNOW MORE ABOUT…
COMPUTER HACKING
If you have been a victim of a computer scam, or have been asked to pay for services rendered via UKash vouchers, Dave Newsom, from Adur Computer Centre, offers key advice writes Jeannette Lamb.
R
ECENTLY THERE HAS been an increase in phone calls from companies, purporting to be Windows, BT or Microsoft amongst others, in which the callers say they have been notified of a problem on your computer or laptop. They ask you to go to a website to allow them access to the computer, show you a list of fictitious errors and then proceed to ‘repair’ them. Once they have finished, they try to charge in excess of £100 for their work, offer technical support for up to two years, and often become excessively agitated if payment or access is not given. These calls are all scams. Neither Microsoft nor any other reputable IT company will do this and they also do not know whether you have a problem with your computer or not. These callers prey on basic information and also sound genuine because most ‘home’ computers do have minor glitches, causing them to run slowly. If you should receive a call from one of these people, hang-up immediately and under no circumstances allow them access to your computer. Once they are logged in they are able to disable the computer if payment is not received. Sussex currently seems to be the target of many telephone and computer scams with victims often left in a highly emotional state; the stress, as well as financial loss, can have
20
devastating effects. If you are concerned, or have already been involved in one, call Dave Newsom from Adur Computer Centre, based in Shoreham High Street, on 01273 441111, who will service your computer, remove alien ‘log-in’ files, and install an antivirus programme.
