Tourism figures Cinderella at the Barn Theatre on the increase 16th-24th December, 7pm-9pm I
L
atest figures show that the value of tourism to the local economy continues to grow. The latest Economic Impact of Tourism report, produced by Tourism South East shows that in 2010 Worthing welcomed in excess of 2.2 million visitors while almost a million more visited the Adur District. The total visitor spend in Worthing was just over £119 million and just over £40 million in Adur; up by 2% on the previous year. These local figures are reflecting what's happening across the whole of the UK and in particular what's happening in the South East; day visitors were up on the previous year while visitors staying overnight fell slightly. With 1.9 million day visitors coming to Worthing and about half of the overnight visitors staying with friends and relatives the 'staycation' is certainly evident and the trend looks set to continue for a while yet. The tourism industry supports just over 3,000 jobs across the Worthing and Adur districts; valuable employment. Cllr Bryan Turner, Deputy Leader of Worthing Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Regeneration says: “I'm really pleased to see so many people continue to come to Worthing. We are working really hard to make the area more vibrant and attractive. We are taking advantage of the 'staycation' trend hence investing in our new Tourist Information Centre at the Dome.” Janice Fraser, the Tourism Development and Marketing Officer for Adur & Worthing Council adds: “Visitors continue to tell us how much they love Worthing and with Hits to the VisitWorthing website up around 36% this year there's certainly plenty of interest in the area. We are very excited about our new Visit Worthing Information Centre at the Dome complex. We're looking forward to moving in, in time for Christmas and continuing to welcome even more visitors next year.“ 4
n the absence of a family Christmas show at the Theatre Royal, Brighton this year, Music Theatre 2000 is proud to bring to the Barn Theatre, Southwick, Brighton a traditional, magical, musical pantomime for all the family to enjoy. Cinderella is one of the best-loved fairy tales of all time bursting with boos and cheers, & songs and laughter. With a first rate cast of singing actors, dancers, a live band and a sprinkling of magic, Cinderella is a must-see part of your Christmas celebrations. Will Cinderella get to the ball, meet the prince of her dreams and live happily ever after? Or will she remain forever in the evil clutches of her wicked step-mother and two of the ugliest sisters you are ever likely to set eyes upon! Cinderella is co-directed by Simon Gray, who also musically directs, with Carole Todd who has directed and choreographed at some of the UK’s leading pantomime venues and West End shows. Her latest production is the hit musical Dreamcoats and Petticoats which is currently playing to packed houses in the West End and on National tour. Choreography is by Nathan Potter who also plays Buttons. Other cast members include Fran Benton-Stace in the title role with Anne Marsh as her wicked step-mother and Steve Emery and Alex White as her Ugly Sisters. Guy Dudeney plays her father, the lovable but misguided Baron Hardup and in keeping with pantomime tradition, Becca Watts and Lea Spells are in the “trouser-roles” of Prince Charming and Dandini. Sprinkling some magic on the whole situation is the adorable Fairy Godmother played by Debbie Spellman. Also appearing are Mickey and Marvin, a couple of adorable speaking mice! The cast is complemented by a chorus of experienced singing dancers, along with children from the Drama Queens School of musical theatre. Tickets are on sale now and are available from the Barn Theatre Box Office. All children’s tickets include a free toy – flashing wands and sabres or a soft cuddly mouse for the under 3s.

Get your car serviced before it's too late The importance of getting your car regularly serviced cannot be stressed enough. We know money is tight but ignoring having your car serviced could result in an accident or a serious mechanical failure could happen consequently costing hundreds or even thousands of pounds to sort out. Whether it's a new or used car it is essential your vehicle is serviced at regular intervals. It could mean just a minor oil change which could prevent the engine from ceasing therefore saving you more than £1000 to have it rebuilt. One of the best times to get the car serviced is before the cold weather sets in. This will ensure your car starts on even the coldest of mornings. Prestige Autotech are offering free winter vehicle checks. Call them on 01273 446776 to book, visit: www.prestigeautotech.co.uk or see their ad on page 7.

Neighbourhood Policing Don't be a victim of purse dipping Shoppers Should Adopt the Following Crime Prevention Advice How To Prevent Becoming A Victim Of Purse Dipping: • Think about putting your purse in a front pocket rather than in an open bag. v Men should also keep their wallet in a front pocket rather than in their back pocket. • Use a handbag that can be closed properly so that it is more difficult for someone to reach in. • Keep your handbag in front of you so you can see it at all times. v If you use a handbag with a strap, wear it across your body and not just over you. • If you keep your purse in a shopping bag, put your purse at the bottom and not at the top and use a shopping bag that can be closed. • Avoid carrying around large amounts of cash. • Keep your cash card separate from your cheque book and pin number. • Be aware of the people immediately around you. • Report incidents straight away.
Drink Driving
Chrismas is approaching, as it does so will the number of drink drivers,Thankfully, there is an everincreasing number of drivers who have realised just how anti-social and dangerous drinking and driving is. The number of deaths and injuries as a result has dropped in the last decade. Having said that, they are still too
high, and there can be no room for complacency. Even the smallest amount of alcohol can affect a driver's skills without them realising: awareness will decrease, reactions will slow. Limits have been set as to how much a driver can drink lawfully, but everyone is different. As a result, the whole thing can turn into a lethal guessing game, and human life is worth much more than a game. The truth is, even if you are below the legal limit you can still be prosecuted if a police officer considers your driving has been affected by alcohol. The are so many variables that the best drinks limit to stick to is "None at all." It just isn't worth it. What can you do? Don't listen to peer pressure. Often people will try and push you into having 'one for the road' or 'a proper drink'. Remember, they're not the ones driving, or the ones having to face the consequences should you be involved in an incident whilst over the limit. Nominate a driver. If you're in a group, agree before any alcohol has been drunk. Give your keys to someone you can trust. It's easy to think you're perfectly able to drive safely when you're not. Remove the temptation before it's there. Take a taxi or public transport. Remove the question of driving from the equation. And remember, a taxi can cost as little as one round of drinks.
How much time before you can drive again?
There is a good rule of thumb: "Allow 12 hours between bottle and throttle" — and this includes a good sleep. But even this isn't an exact science. Give it longer if possible.
Drink driving quiz

The alcohol content of 1 whiskey (single pub measure ) is equivalent to? a) half a pint b) 1 pint c) 2 pints of standard strength beer 4. Can the police stop a driver if they have reason to believe he/she has been drinking? a) yes b) no c) only if the driver is seen leaving the pub 5. What is the maximum penalty for causing death by careless driving under the influence of drink/drugs? a) disqualification for 1 year b) imprisonment for 10 years c) £10.000 fine. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
Is it time to remortgage? a
few years ago the remortgage market was booming. People would take their mortgage and as soon as their initial rate ended they would seek out the next deal. People made great savings by moving their mortgages around. When the credit crunch hit, the new rates were not as competitive, but that has now changed. Many lenders are now looking for remortgage business and are undercutting the variable rates of others. So if you have a mortgage, now is the time to check things out.
is an arrangement fee added to the loan. It depends on your priorities and the size of your mortgage
A free consultation
A remortgage can be a stress free and quick process which will save you pounds over the term of your mortgage. If you would like a free initial consultation please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to help.
You may feel that it is just too much hassle, or maybe it’s something you never get round to. Well, here is the good news. Here at Talk Money we are offering readers a free initial consultation over the phone. That means it will take just one phone call for us make an initial assessment and see how much money you are likely to save.
What will we need to know? We need to know about your employment and income, also any debts you have outstanding. We need the approximate value of your property and your current mortgage details. The simplest place to find the mortgage information is on your original mortgage offer. This will tell us all we need to know. So, dig out the offer and give us a call.
Why would I want to remortgage? There are many reasons people move their mortgage to a different lender, it could be to secure a lower rate and reduce outgoings, or to fix their rate for the future. Sometimes people increase their loan to accommodate home improvements or to tidy up their finances. I should point out however, that by adding personal borrowing onto your mortgage, your borrowing will be secured on your property, and although your monthly outgoings will be reduced, you will pay more for these debts as they will be cleared over a longer term.
Will remortgaging suit me? This is something which we can assess for you. It depends on the size of your loan, your property value, your current job situation and many other factors. Sometimes it can be advisable to stay with your current lender, but quite often you can substantially save by moving your mortgage.
Does it cost a lot to remortgage? Not necessarily. There are many deals out there which offer free valuations and also cover your legal costs. Although there are some deals with no fees at all (this can suit in some situations), it can be worth taking a deal where there 8
How long does it take? Many lenders now have online systems which means an instant decision, the lender will also deal with your application straightaway. Some are now able to make a mortgage offer in days, making the whole process quick and stress-free.

The winter garden I
t’s nearLy chrIstmas and I can’t really believe it. Certainly the weather in the latter part of the year has only just about felt autumnal let alone like we were in the depths of winter, but that is certainly where we are now. If it all feels rather gloomy with the short dark days, but look on the bright side. A few days before Christmas will be the shortest day, which means the days will slowly lengthen and that’s where it all begins again in the garden. With that in mind it underlines the fact that the nature and the garden never stands still, so there’s always something to be done. When the weather is dull and gloomy it can be hard motivating yourself to get out in the garden. I always find it’s the best time to grab the bull by the horns and get out there and do all the little jobs you’ve been meaning to do. Clearing part of the garden, or giving a fence or shed a spruce up with some new paint or new roofing. A few little jobs here and there will make a tremendous difference in giving the garden a lift and making it look cared for. I always find that’s one of the keys in gardening. If you keep it looking tidy it’s easy to keep motivated as anything out of place can be dealt with quickly. If a part of the garden has got out of hand and you don’t know where to start then break it down into smaller jobs. Either that or get someone in to do the hard work and get it cleared for you so you have a blank canvas to start with. This time of year really is the time of year when the phrase a stitch in nine
10
saves time comes to the fore. A lot of simple jobs done now will save time and expense later on during the possible bad weather in the early months of the year. Check fences and gates to make sure they don’t need repair, and any other structures that suffer from the effects of the coastal winds that hit us. Roofs on sheds are easily damaged, which means the structure and contents can be damaged too. Check large shrubs, hedges and trees to make sure any possible high winds or snow fall wont effect them too badly, and remove any branches that need to go now. Frost is now an ever present danger so make sure you’ve got as many plants protected as possible, as well as the tap, hosepipes and pots. Whilst we are on the subject of frost if you do get a heavy frost, try to stay off the lawn, as it will cause damage to the grass when you walk on it. Try and make sure you keep paths clean and clear as it will reduce the chance of slips when they ice over. It’s also a good idea to get hold of a few bags of rock salt for the paths and steps just in case, rather than when it’s too late. If the weather really is too bad on the days you plan to go out in the garden, then a trip to a nursery or garden centre is always worthwhile. It can give you new ideas and allow you to plan ahead for the coming year. If you are looking to make changes in the garden, then it’s also worth getting advice and quotes now at this time of year to allow you to budget and book up tradesman for the
time you want them, before they get busy in the inevitable spring rush. All that remains for me to say is have a wonderful Christmas and I hope the New Year brings you all you wish for both in life and in the garden! Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

When Father Christmas first visited Shoreham
I
t couLD be said that Father Christmas first set foot on the shores of England in Saxon times. His origins began with a Viking legend that travelled across to the British Isles with the Nordic invaders in the 8th and 9th centuries. At around the same time in mainland Europe, St. Nicholas was one of the most celebrated saints, although his influence did not extend to Britain until much later. Prior to the arrival of the Vikings, the Saxons had created a King Frost, represented by a man wearing a hat or crown, who would embody the character of winter. He was welcomed into the home to sit at the fireside, so that he would look kindly upon the people gathered there and now not make the winter too harsh. With the Viking invaders however came the belief in the Norse God Odin. During December, according to Viking Lore, he came to earth on an eight-legged horse named Sleipnir (perhaps an early incarnation of Santa’s reindeer) and wore a long blue hooded cloak. According to some traditions, children would place their boots, filled with carrots, straw, or sugar, near the chimney for the horse to eat and Odin would then reward them with gifts or sweets. Odin also brought with him a satchel of bread and would often leave a loaf at the door of a poor family. After 1066, the Normans brought the legend of St. Nicholas to Sussex. St. Nicholas became a popular saint for the dedication of churches, including the one at Old Shoreham, which also bears his likeness in one of its principal windows. St. Nicholas was Bishop of Myra in Lycia, part of what is now Turkey, during the 4th century. He is the patron of mariners, merchants and bakers. He is usually depicted as a robed and bearded figure and as with Odin there is the association with both bread and travel. Nicholas was famous for his generous gifts to the poor and was also regarded as the special protector of children, as shown in the stained glass window at St. Nicholas Church, Old Shoreham. It was a custom in the Middle Ages for parishes to hire an actor to dress in disguise and visit the poor. He would report back to the parish priest who could then distribute alms. This figure became associated with St. Nicholas. In Belgium and Germany the December feast day of St. Nicholas was already a time when gifts were given to children. The Dutch name for St. Nicholas is Sinterklaas, hence the origins of the name Santa Claus.
14
In England however Father Christmas began as the personification of Christmas in songs. A 15th century song began: “Goday, goday, my lord Sire Christëmas, goday! Goday, Sire Christëmas, our king, for ev'ry man, both old and ying, is glad and blithe of your coming; Goday! The specific depiction of Christmas as a merry old man begins in the early 17th century, as a defiance to Puritan criticism of the Christmas feast. In 1616 the character of Christmas appears in Ben Jonson’s ‘Christmas Masque’ as a jolly old man. In Shoreham, as elsewhere in England, amateur actors known as tipteerers performed mummers plays which included the character of Father Christmas. In the Shoreham version of the play he visited houses to introduce the other characters who then performed the play. His opening lines were: “In comes I, Old Father Christmas, Welcome in, or welcome not; And I hope that I, Old Father Christmas Will never be forgot.” Father Christmas certainly wasn't forgotten, and over the following centuries he has gradually merged with the giftgiver St Nicholas/Santa Claus. The Victorian Father Christmas was in appearance and behavior much as we expect him to be today. Sometimes he wore a red suit but more often a green one. The 1930s Coca-Cola advertising campaign did not actually invent his red suit as widely believed, but it did ensure that it became the enduring image of the man on the reindeer-pulled sleigh. The one certainty we can rely on is that this year on Christmas Eve, Father Christmas will once again visit Shoreham and Southwick as he has done down the ages. Judy Upton

hIs month I would like to recommend essential oils that will benefit the circulation and digestive system, to help you through the colder weather and as this can be a month of over indulgence too! Also suggestions of some oils to bring winter cheer into your home. To support your overall health during the winter it is important to support the digestion with warmer cooked foods and to eat less raw foods and salads, think soups and stews. Spice oils such as ginger, cardamom and black pepper help to ‘rev’ up the circulation and warm tired achy muscles. For cold feet blend 1 drop of ginger, 3 of orange and 1 of black pepper into a table spoon of olive oil and massage well into your feet, once most of the oil is absorbed cover with thick warm socks this will soften dry skin and help feet with poor circulation whilst warming the body as a whole. Add one drop of ginger, juniper and 3 drops of Lemon essential oils to 2 tablespoons of sunflower or olive oil and add to your bath water to soothe muscle aches and strains and help digestion. After a heavy meal or the day after the night before where you may feel sluggish from partying or eating rich food and drink, you can benefit from the essences in Fennel and peppermint which can be drunk as herbal teas available from your local health food shop, You can make a blend with these oils to massage over the abdomen, this will ease indigestion and help support the liver. Use one drop of fennel and one of peppermint in a tablespoon of oil (sunflower, almond or olive work well) massage into the abdomen in a clockwise direction. To bring an uplifting and warming, natural fragrance into the home and as a cheaper and more environmentally friendly version to synthetic scented candles and ‘plug-ins’ try the festive combinations of Orange and bay leaf oil, Pine and frankincense, or mandarin and cardamom, add these to an oil burner once the water has warmed (keep a check to prevent it going dry). Play around with different combinations of oils to suit your mood and you will feel the difference these wonderful oils make to uplift your mood as they evaporate into the atmosphere.
