DECEMBER 2012
Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment A very Merry Christmas to all local residents of Shoreham and Southwick. What an eventful year we have with a couple of the highlights being the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and with London hosting the 2012 Olympics which was truly spectacular. So despite the economical climate the spirit of optimism and courage to carry on and to do well has not diminished despite the doom and gloom we can get bombarded with. In this month issue we have our regular articles and of course some very pertinent ones. We have advice from our local PCOS on what you can do to enjoy this time of year and be safe on the road and protect
your home and those Christmas presents under the Christmas tree. We also have Judy Upton’s latest on Snowy times in Shoreham – it is a lovely read at for the winter months. At this time of year many of us will be with or thinking of our nearest and dearest. I hope that where ever you are, that you will not be alone and that your celebrations are filled with the joy, laughter and merriment for this festive period. On that note, warm seasonal greetings to you all from us here at the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine team. Angela

Get ready for Classic Tale with a twist of Christmas T
he producers of the smash-hit ‘Fairy Tales of the Unexpected’ are returning to The Ropetackle Arts Centre this coming festive season with another fantastic show after wowing audiences during the summer of 2012. This time, promising fun for all the family, LP Creatives debut ‘Treasure Island’ for six show days only over Christmas week (23rd, 24th, 26th-29th December). The audience will be taken on a magical trip into a world of Pirates and Princesses as one of the nations favourite children’s novels is given a panto twist. See Jim Hawkins, Dame Dolly, Seadog Sally and of course Long John Silver along with the cream of Shorehams children’s dance talent, star in lots of adventures in a show packed with action, singing, cheering and booing, lots of colourful costumes, and maybe even a monkey or two! The show is the brainchild of popular comedian and entertainer Tom Beard who is no stranger to pantomime, having appeared in number one venues over the past ten years, where he frequently had children (and adults) doubled up with mirth at his comedy antics. Tom said: “Everyone knows and loves the original pirate story but you won’t have enjoyed the tale quite like this before. We want our young audience to get involved with lots of shouting, cheering, singing and laughing, and the adults can’t just sit quietly in their seats. We are after non-stop fun and laughter, whilst also staying as close to the original tale as possible. “We’ve respectfully kept to Robert Loius Stevenson’s swashbuckling tale which everyone can enjoy, along with some humour for both the adults and the children. The one thing we can guarantee is that everyone will leave with a smile on their face." ‘Treasure Island’ is a spectacular children’s show created to spark the children’s imagination whilst also entertaining all the accompanying Mums, Dads, Grandmas and Grandads!. It features a professional cast of actors and local children. “Ahaar me hearties! A Christmas show for a big Yo-HO!! “Here be a swashbuckling, show-stopping, sail-flapping, hand-clapping, toe-tapping, barnacle busting pantomime twist on Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventures on the high seas! We’ve got the telescope, the treasure map and the schooners at the ready! So weigh anchor mateys, bring your booty and prepare to set sail for magic, puppets, monkeys, parrots, tropical islands, Pirates, Princesses and MORE blummin’ Pirates!!”

Adur wins award A
dur and Worthing Councils have been announced the winners of the Street Naming and Numbering Policy Implementation Exemplar Award 2012 at a ceremony in Central London. The Award, which was presented during the annual ‘Everything Happens Somewhere’ Conference on 25th October 2012, was for recognition of excellence in demonstrating the importance of implementing street naming and numbering policy that integrates with local authority processes. The Award was sponsored by the Local Government Association and presented by Carolyn Downs, Chief Executive of the Local Government Association together with Cllr Ruth Cadbury from the LGA Improvement and Innovation Board. Adur and Worthing Councils fought off stiff competition to emerge victorious with their successful project that saw the amalgamation of the Street Naming and Numbering Services employed across the two councils via a shared service. The judges recognised the project as having streamlined services through both councils adopting one set of procedures, reduced lengthy paperwork that freed up staff resources and also their innovation in working more closely with other council departments such as planning and building control. It was widely acknowledged that the project was implemented without disruption to day-to-day operations, and resulted in a much better service to the tax payer and costs savings of £28,000. Speaking of the Award, Corporate Information Manager at Adur and Worthing Councils, Gill Van-Eetvelt said, “This Award represents twelve months of hard work and dedication by the entire Street Naming and Numbering team. Moving to a shared service is not an easy thing to do, but we always knew that the rewards would be there in both efficiency and cost savings.” For more information, visit www.geoplace.co.uk

Winter gardening S
o here we are at the end of the year with Christmas racing towards us in the depths of midwinter. So firstly I’d like to wish everyone a happy Christmas. Christmas aside it can seem like a gloomy time of year and no different in the garden, with cold temperatures and low light levels on short dark days. Just because it’s the end of the calendar year it’s worth remembering that the seasons never end in the garden as the cycle continues onwards and there is always something to look forward to. A few days before Christmas is the shortest day, which means ever so slowly the days will begin to get lighter and within a month there will be a noticeable difference. It’s also quite likely that we will start to see the first signs of new growth in the garden as well. It’s a pretty good reminder at this time of year that nothing stands still in the garden and you can’t simply ignore the garden at this time of year. Inside jobs are more preferable on really cold or damp days, but many people complain they don’t have anywhere like a greenhouse to do them. Most gardens have a shed of some size or description. Even the smallest shed can be utilized but most of us use it is an untidy store so a good clean out of the shed is worthwhile, and be brutal. How many of you actually know what’s in the shed or have even seen the back of it? If you don’t need it or haven’t used 6
it for the last couple of years, will you really need it? With a bit of ingenuity, some hooks, the odd shelf and a bit of thought you can use the shed for storing the usual suspects such as the mower, but also have enough room for carrying out other garden tasks, such as potting up seeds and cuttings. If you have somewhere to go and do these tasks, where you have everything to hand it really does make them even more enjoyable. Add a small radio and a chair or stool and you’ve got a great hideaway to while your time away. I built my own greenhouse in the garden this year and I can’t believe the amount of time I spend in there. I made sure I had everything in it I wanted rather than an off the shelf purchase. There really is nothing better than being in there to do all the little jobs and seeing the changes in the seasons outside. Why not make it your job over the Christmas holidays to sort out the shed and make your own little garden retreat? If you do sort the shed out then I apologise in advance for any grief you may get from the other half for disappearing in there on a regular basis! It’s been a strange hard year in the garden this year with the weather we have endured (and I think that is the right term for this year’s weather) but it’s still made it interesting and I’m keen to see how the garden reacts next year to everything that has happened. With that to look forward to and more ill leave you
to your mince pies and hope that you have a wonderful Christmas. Mark Oakley Any Garden Limited

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice
EU Directive to affect life cover and annuity rates O
n 21st December 2012 rates for life cover, critical illness cover, annuities and other financial products will be changing. For most contracts this will not be for the better. Policies have to be in force by this date to qualify for current premiums, so it would be unwise to leave things until the last moment. If you are thinking about taking any of these, now is the time to act; please call me.
What is happening? On 21st December the EU Gender Directive comes into play. This means that providers are no longer allowed to differentiate between men and women when it comes to calculating premiums. Not only this, tax relief on certain expenses incurred by life companies is changing, meaning they will have to charge more.
Who is affected? People taking annuities: If you are a man and you have built up a pension fund, you may be thinking of taking the pension soon and getting some income. To secure a guaranteed income you may want to purchase an annuity. This would entail giving your lump sum to a life company, who in return will provide you with a guaranteed income for the rest of your life. To work out how much they will pay you, they calculate how long they think you will live, the shorter your life expectancy, the higher the income they will pay, as they assume they won’t have to pay it for as long. Currently then, they would take into account that men don’t live as long as women and therefore they get higher income than women do for the same amount of investment. From December, they have to take the gender calculation out of the equation, they have to assume that you will live longer and so they will reduce the amount they will pay you.
What to do If you apply for an annuity now, and it is in place before 21st December, your annuity will be calculated as a man, and your income will be higher, and guaranteed for the rest of your life. It is crucial that you take advice soon so that the arrangements can be put into place prior to this date. You should contact an independent financial adviser who can assess one, or several pensions you may have in place and find the provider who will give you the best income for your age and situation.
What about life cover and critical illness cover? When you apply for this type of cover the provider has to assess your health and life expectancy, this can take some time, especially if they have to write to your doctor. Doctors will be inundated with requests for information and people chasing them , especially as we approach the end of the year with this new legislation coming in. Again, if you apply and are accepted and the cover starts before 21st December, your policy will be based on current rates. It is best not to delay. If you need independent advice on any of the above, for a free initial consultation please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667, I would be happy to help.

Snowy Times In Shoreham
O
ur area has been subject to many hard winters over the centuries, with temperatures sometimes remaining in minus figures for months at a time. As long ago as 1748 it is reported that many sheep were lost on the South Downs in heavy snow and in 1791, there was actually snow on the Downs in June. In 1806 snowdrifts blocked Shoreham High Street and a man was buried alive in a drift in Brighton. Conditions were even worse in 1836, when snow fell heavily between the 22nd of December and Christmas Eve. Gale force winds drove it into high drifts and at Lewes an avalanche occurred on Christmas Eve when a drift fell from the high chalk cliff above the town, burying seven houses and killing eight people. The Gloucester mail coach was supposed to reach Brighton on the Sunday but the snow prevented its arrival until after noon the next day. Then it was unable to travel any further than Shoreham. The bags of mail continued their journey on the Worthing mail cart. Many people did not receive their Christmas mail on time that year. In 1870 our area enjoyed a picture-perfect white Christmas, bringing artists out in force to paint the pretty scenes. January 1881 brought hard frosts to Shoreham and Southwick. Skating at the Swiss Gardens was a popular activity, but the 17th of January brought a dramatic change in the weather. It was a gale in the night that brought blizzard conditions. The wind was so strong it blew the snow through cracks in roofs and walls into homes. Postcards of the time show Shoreham High Street covered in drifts that block shop doorways. The Old Shoreham Road from Steyning was impassable due to high drifts. All communication between Brighton and Arundel ceased as mail carts and coaches could not get through and the trains ground to a halt. Ten years later, in 1891, this time it was the month of March that brought another mighty blizzard. Fishermen were lost at sea and once again mail coaches and trains could not get through, as many towns and villages across Sussex were cut off by the heavy snowfall. April 1908 did not provide the rain showers and sunny spells associated with the month, but another blizzard that blew in on the 25th. Spring fairs and other events were cancelled and newborn lambs hastily brought in from the fields. In December of the same year, the snow arrived on the 28th, causing havoc for those trying to travel home after Christmas festivities with family or friends. One foot of snow covered roads and fields alike. A train making its way down from London became stuck in Clayton tunnel. The regular
12
tram service to Shoreham from Brighton was also suspended until enough workers could be mobilised to clear the snow from the tracks. The snow lingered until the middle of January making it hard for local shops to receive the supplies of goods and food their customers required. The following year, spring was again the season of snow. There was a tragedy when a boy slipped on ice at Portslade and hit his head and died. A blizzard on Boxing Day 1927 was a mighty thirty-six hour long storm that again brought Shoreham to a halt, with roads impassable. Up on the Downs sheep had to be dug out of snowdrifts. It was so bitterly cold in February 1929 that the sea froze along the Sussex coast, causing problems for shipping at Shoreham harbour. Children however enjoyed themselves as the frozen brooks along the Steyning Road offered skating opportunities. In 1936 there was an Easter snowfall, but the next serious snow disruption was in 1938 when it snowed continuously from the 18th to the 25th of December. Seabirds were killed by the unrelenting cold weather, their frozen bodies found on the beaches. The winter of 1939/1940 was also very cold for two months. A temperature of minus 21 degrees Celsius was recorded in December On the 27th January 1940 there was a spectacular glaze as cold rain fell during freezing temperatures, and encased everything in ice. Telephone lines snapped, and birds were frozen to the trees by their feet as they roosted. Ice was reported floating in the sea. January to March 1947 was also cold and bleak. Blizzards caused sheep frozen by their wool to gorse bushes. It was hard for their rescuers to find them, as the snow on the Downs was deep enough to cover fences, hedges and other landmarks. Council workmen were sent out with shovels to keep Shoreham High Street clear for traffic but as soon as one lot of snow was cleared more fell. Schools across the area had to be closed and the tram service was again suspended. Coal was in short supply and a ship carrying fresh supplies from the north of the country took eight days instead of two to reach Shoreham harbour. On the 1st of January 1949, icy conditions and gale force winds led to a double-decker bus being blown off of the toll bridge at Old Shoreham. Fortunately it was low tide and no one was killed. Since then there have been a number of other notably hard, cold winters, especially that of 1962, and snow, whether at Christmas or not, remains an unpredictable visitor to our area. Judy Upton

Neighbourhood Policing
Christmas Drink Drive Projects
As the festive season fast approaches our attention turns promoting road safety and home security to a higher degree. With the festive season we have reason to celebrate with Christmas parties, family get togethers and of course Christmas drinks. It is a normal practice for police to launch a Christmas drink drive campaign but this year sees a new initiative is Adur and Worthing. A dedicated Road Safety Officer will be working with partners and communities to raise awareness of the dangers of drink driving. We will also be conducting high visibility and undercover patrols to identify drink drivers. We never go out with the intention of stopping anyone from having a good time but we do expect you to exercise good judgment when planning your festive fun. If you are going to go for a few drinks with friends allocate a designated driver who is happy to lay off the hard stuff or pre plan your trip home with a taxi for collection. Don’t run the risk to yourself or to others. It not worth it!
Leave a Light on this Christmas
This can be a great time of year for many people across the country who get to share in the spirit of Christmas but can some times become a nightmare when temptation leads to burglary. To often we are made aware of a burglary that has clearly taken place because an opportunist has seen goods that have been left in full view of a window or door. We have put together a list of easy to follow advice to try to deter this kind of criminality. • If your leaving your home leave a light on. This will give the impression that somebody is home. • Leave a radio on a talk station. Voices are a great deterrent. • Don’t leave gifts or high value goods in view of a window. • Don’t put gifts under the tree until the latest moment. This is the first place they will look. • Lastly we work 365 days a year so if you suspect it, report it. Don’t make it easy for them! Details of your local cafficers, current priorities and dates of local meetings are available on-line at www.sussex.police.uk (enter your postcode) or by telephone by calling 101.

Our amazing ankles A
utumn has passed and the rich autumnal hues have rapidly followed in its wake. Nights seem increasingly dark and those evening chills are upon us. Halloween and Bonfire night supplied us with both creepy and exciting colours respectively and as Christmas approaches the choice for some will be “the LBD or colour at the party?”. Yet, woven between these seasonal events, if you amble our local streets in the evening or drive the local highways, you may still be treated to the occasional flash of vibrant colour; the high visibility jackets of the marathon runner in training or the regular runner getting their moments of solitude. Whatever the weather people can be found exercising outside. It might be the long or brisk walk, a training / cross country run or walking the dog in the country over the downs. All good fun and excellent for us. The health benefits of any kind of exercise are well known and to be encouraged, however, exercises involving walking or running can bring with it certain risk factors. In particular we two legged creatures are vulnerable to injuring or ”going over” on our ankles surprisingly frequently. A seemingly small injury we might think.
Our Clever Ankle When we walk 4 separate bones in the ankle area work together, forming a wonderfully clever part of the human body called the ankle joint. As a joint these 4 bones are surrounded, protected and kept strong by tissues (tendons, ligaments, nerves, muscles and others) all of which work to 24
reduce our risk of injury. Whether walking, running or jumping the ankle takes large amounts of shock as our foot strikes the ground. In addition the ankle takes the rolling inwards and outwards movement of the foot and passes it up the leg, which in turn rolls inwards and outwards whatever the terrain we walk or run on. The reverse is also true, when the body and leg turns one way the ankle passes all that motion into the foot. So clever is our ankle at simply doing its job we tend only to be aware of it when it is injured. That moment when we step off the pavement badly or fall down a hole or land on an uneven surface as we run. We go over on our ankle in such a way as to stretch and strain the tissues, to a point where they pull really hard or tear some of the fibres of the ligament and tendons. Most of us experience this at some point in our lives and in some cases we might end up with some of our own pretty vibrant colours around the ankle! Because such accidents happen so easily we might be tempted to think it is not too much of an issue. We get over it! But how significant is such a common injury? In short it can be quite significant. The seemingly simple ankle injury can, and in many cases does, have a profound and long lasting affect upon a person. • A single ankle injury, if not treated properly, frequently results in another occurring with up to 70% of people having the same injury again (1). • Once injured the ankle can remain unstable leading to further injury if not treated properly (2). • Where such repeated, even small, injuries occur people can find themselves undertaking less activity (3) over their lifetimes as the ankle just feels to “give way” (2). • Even simple things such as our sense of balance become affected. The impact of this is not just in the ankle but in the leg, hip and higher up the body as we slowly change the way we walk. What gets hurt when we hurt our ankle? All those things we mentioned earlier.
The nerves Normally these tell our brains where our foot is when it is in mid air and what it is doing as it lands. They help control the muscles around our ankle. Sprains and strains can make some of nerves really painful and other nerves dull in their activity. They are not working properly.
The ligaments These help to keep the joints close together but may have been stretched or torn and need to be helped to work as close to normal as possible.
The muscles These may become over stretched and perhaps contain scars in them from the injury, making them weaker, sometimes painful so they do not control the leg and foot well enough.
The bones Some of the bones that make up the ankle joint may become slightly out of place, get stuck there and need to be gently coaxed back.
The correct assessment and treatment of even a simple ankle injury can help restore to us the pleasure our our chosen activity. Just leaving it “to get better” will mean our ankle and legs return to being useable, even pain free and able to take on simple walking tasks. However, for some, the tasks of walking up or down stairs, or hills or running again or walking on uneven surfaces is more difficult. There is a difference between being functional again (able to do everyday things) and getting the best performance out of your leg/ankle. Getting back to performance means having to help those joints, nerves and muscles get back to their best possible shape, back to performing their job well. At Podia-Clinic, in Southwick, we specialise in treating the low leg, foot and ankle, often treating ankle injuries from many years ago that are now causing problems. Podia-Clinic is based in Manor Farm House, Southwick. If you are aware of an ankle or low leg injury in the past or a recent one and it is still a concern please ring us on 01273 593344 and come along for an assessment and treatment. Manor Farm House in Southwick also has the benefits of Podiatrists, Physiotherapists and Osteopaths who will sometimes work together in more extreme cases. Red-legged Partridges

s Christmas approaches you may catch yourself humming along to the popular carol, Twelve Days of Christmas. Featuring plenty of
Charles ІІ, who was anxious to establish them when numbers of our native grey partridge started to fall due to over-hunting • Despite the true love’s gift of ‘a partridge in a pear tree,’ it’s unlikely you would find partridges in any sort of tree as they are ground nesting birds, preferring arable fields and open woodlands where they feed on a diet of seeds and roots • Surprisingly hard to spot, these plump partridges with their colourful plumage blend well into their preferred habitat • During the breeding season, the hen nests among bushes in scrub, arable farmland or hedgerows. They occasionally and unusually lay two clutches of eggs in different nests. One clutch is then incubated by the female and the other by the male our feathered friends including swans, geese and turtle doves, the partridge in this seasonal song is most probably red-legged and French. • Red-legged partridges are small game birds and members of the pheasant family • They were introduced from France into Britain during the reign of King
The Big Sleep F
or most animals finding enough food to eat during the winter can be difficult says Sussex Wildlife Trust. When the clocks go back and insects and green plants are in short supply, some animals solve the problem by finding a snug place to hibernate. Hibernating animals get ready for their winter sleep by eating extra food in autumn to build up fat reserves which they slowly release as energy while sleeping. Did you know that hibernating creatures include dormice, bats, fish, frogs, newts, toads, grass snakes, butterflies and snails? Some insects also hibernate and to keep warm they find holes in the ground, under tree bark or in rotting logs. Ladybirds hibernate in large groups, sometimes numbering thousands and leave a scent behind in the spring to identify top notch accommodation for future years. Garden sheds and hollow trees are the ‘des res’ of choice for peacock butterflies which fold up their wings in winter to camouflage themselves until they emerge in spring to lay their eggs on nettles which will provide a feast for their caterpillars. Even when the weather is severe, animals may wake up for a short period every few weeks to eat a little food and use their ‘toilet rooms’. 28
