Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives you essential advice

T: 01273 224667, E: claire@talkmoney.co.uk

Time to sort your finances? T HROUGHOUT LIFE WE can’t help but gather financial products. Whether it be pensions with various companies, life cover or investments. Many people have a vague idea of what they have, but things can become messy. So much so that it seems really daunting to go through it all. You may be reading this before Christmas and this is the last thing on your mind, but the new year seems like a good time to get things in order, so if the following is you, perhaps you would like some independent advice to get things sorted. Firstly pensions. They seem really complicated and the paperwork is full of jargon. No wonder people get statements through and just tuck them away. But remember this is your invested money. A pension review can have a real impact on your retirement income. Often people have several plans which have accumulated over the years. The good thing is that as an independent adviser (IFA) I would be able to deal with your pension companies on your behalf, obtaining all the relevant information. Your plans can then be compared to the new pension arrangements now available. You could be paying high charges or languishing in funds which are simply not performing. Sometimes it would be better to remain invested with your current provider, but sometimes it may be beneficial to move to a new plan. As part of the review process we would make sure that you are comfortable with the level of investment risk you are taking, and that you are invested in the right funds going forward. If you have investments, the story could be the same. With good intentions you could have invested in a stocks & shares ISA (now a NISA). How is this performing? Has it been reviewed and are you making the most of your tax free investments? This financial year you can invest up to £15,000 in a stocks & shares or cash NISA, many people don’t use this allowance. Also, you can switch cash ISAs to stocks and shares NISAs, something many people are doing as the rates reduce further on their cash ISA investments. Again we can make sure you are invested in the right funds and make reviews as an ongoing service. Once your finances are in place you can keep in touch with your investment performance using our online client system. You can see all of your financial products, life cover, pensions and investments in one place. No need to wait for your annual statement or make phone calls to several providers. 6

So, how do you arrange a review? The first step is to provide Talk Money with the details of all your plans including pensions, investments, mortgages and protection products. We would then gather all of the relevant information directly from the providers. Once things are clear, we can make recommendations of how your financial plans might be improved. If you would like a simple, independent review of your finances, for a free initial consultation please call me, Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be happy to help.. Talk Money is a trading style of Aspect 8 Ltd, which is an appointed representative of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the amount invested.

A VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS

IN SHOREHAM AND SOUTWICK

M

ANY OF THE Christmas traditions and treats that we enjoy today have their roots in the Victorian era. For example, the Christmas card first appeared at this time. Henry Cole, the first director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, commissioned the first one in 1843, though it was not until 1846 that the first 1000 of the cards went on sale in London’s Bond Street. In Shoreham and Southwick however, the habit of sending Christmas cards did not become widespread until the end of 1860s. Then suddenly cards became hugely popular and our postal service was barely able to cope. In 1870 a special halfpenny card stamp was introduced and people were asked to post early for Christmas. As railway links throughout the country were built and improved, it became possible, by the end of the century, to quickly and reliably send cards all over the country and overseas. The Christmas tree was a German tradition popularised by Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, around 1841. By the end of the era most houses in our area would have had one, decorated with candles, homemade decorations and edible treats. Children would have spent much time stringing together garlands of dried fruit and nuts. Christmas decorations would not be hung before Christmas Eve however as it was considered bad luck to display them any earlier. In the countryside, in the days just before Christmas Eve, farm and woodland workers would be busy cutting holly, ivy and mistletoe from the trees, in order for it to be sold in towns and villages while still fresh. Gingerbread and pinecones hanging from the tree, as well sticks of cinnamon and oranges stuck with cloves, gave the house the unmistakable smell of Christmas. A Yule Log would be burnt in the fireplace throughout Christmas and had to be large enough to stay alight for the duration. Although a tradition with Celtic origins, the church in the nineteenth century stipulated that the wood should come from an Ash tree, as this was the wood the shepherds had used to light a fire to warm the baby Jesus. Christmas crackers were invented by Thomas Smith, who in 1840s Paris saw the way the French wrap their sweets in twisted

10

paper and decided to bring the idea home to England. By 1860, the crackers contained toys or novelties and went off with a bang. It wasn’t long before they were on every Christmas table. In Shoreham and Southwick, our shopkeepers would have been constantly looking for the next fashionable trend to lure shoppers in, as there would have been great competition to stock the latest items that were known to be gracing the tables of influential households in London and elsewhere. As Christmas was a time to invite family, neighbours and friends into your home, it was also a time to dress your rooms to impress others. Christmas puddings existed for centuries, but before the nineteenth century they contained beef. A Christmas pudding was also sloppy and porridge-like rather than the solid ball of dried fruit and cake we know today. Mincemeat was originally just that, rather than a mixture of dried fruit and spices. The Victorians introduced the tradition of everyone in the household stirring the homemade pud and making a wish as they did so. They also were responsible for the idea of the pudding containing a coin (usually a silver farthing), though the idea of hiding a token or charm of some kind in a cake has pagan origins. Mince pies also lost their meat in the Victorian era, and there was a belief that eating one on each of the twelve days of Christmas gave you good luck for the following year. The Victorians added to the traditional Christmas carols with many of their own including ‘Away In A Manger’, ‘We Three Kings’ and ‘Silent Night’. Carols would be sung in the home, around a piano. There had been a medieval tradition known as The Waits, where a group of musicians went door to door asking for donations at Christmas time. These were originally only officials groups, but during the Victorian era, groups of friends began to unofficially start strolling around their neighbourhoods singing carols. The Victorians also played charades and told ghost stories at Christmas, pastimes encouraged by Charles Dickens, who published many stories specifically to be read to the family at this time. WHAT’S IN YOUR SHED?

S

O HERE WE are at the end of the year with Christmas racing towards us in the depths of midwinter. So firstly I’d like to wish everyone a happy Christmas. Christmas aside it can seem like a gloomy time of year and no different in the garden, with cold temperatures and low light levels on short dark days.

12

Just because it’s the end of the calendar year it’s worth remembering that the seasons never end in the garden as the cycle continues onwards and there is always something to look forward to. A few days before Christmas is the shortest day, which means ever so slowly the days will begin to get lighter and within a month there will be a noticeable difference. It’s also quite likely that we will start to see the first signs of new growth in the garden as well. It’s a pretty good reminder at this time of year that nothing stands still in the garden and you can’t simply ignore the garden at this time of year. Inside jobs are more preferable on really cold or damp days, but many people complain they don’t have anywhere like a greenhouse to do them. Most gardens have a shed of some size or description. Even the smallest shed can be utilized but most of us use it is an untidy store so a good clean out of the shed is worthwhile, and be brutal. How many of you actually know what’s in the shed or have even seen the back of it? If you don’t need it or haven’t used it for the last couple of years, will you really need it? With a bit of ingenuity, some hooks, the odd shelf and a bit of thought you can use the shed for storing the usual suspects such as the mower, but also have enough room for carrying out other garden tasks, such as potting up seeds and cuttings. If you have somewhere to go and do these tasks, where you have everything to hand it really does make them even more enjoyable. Add a small radio and a chair or stool and you’ve got a great hideaway to while your time away. I built my own greenhouse in the garden this year and I can’t believe the amount of time I spend in there. I made sure I had everything in it I wanted rather than an off the shelf purchase. There really is nothing better than being in there to do all the little jobs and seeing the changes in the seasons outside. Why not make it your job over the Christmas holidays to sort out the shed and make your own little garden retreat? We have had great year in the garden this year with the fantastic summer weather and, despite the rainy days recently, I’m keen to see how the garden reacts next year . With that to look forward to and more I’ll leave you to your mince pies and hope that you have a wonderful Christmas. Mark Oakley, Any Garden To advertise call: 01273 452065

TAKING THE LEAD

DOG BITES AND CHILDREN/BABIES

It seems all too often nowadays we hear in the news of another child or baby being bitten by dogs. Gill White says what’s going on and can we do anything about it?

D

OGS COMMUNICATE PRIMARILY through body language and if anxious or fearful may display submissive behaviour such as lowering body, laying on back with legs in air, ears back, tail down etc. They also use what is called “Calming Signals” to display anxiety, these are very fast, blink and you would miss them! But the main ones are licking lips, yawning out of context, turning their head away from us, turning their whole back on us. If we started to understand these communication signals, we would be in a much better position to save children from getting bitten. After all we expect the dog to learn our language, yet we fail to understand the dogs.

14

Here we have a good example of a dog showing stress and anxiety through calming signals and dilated pupils – this is a bite waiting to happen! Not only could the child be maimed and at worse killed, the dog will pay for this with its life by being put to sleep. A dog cannot send a solicitors letter, it can only show its concern if uncomfortable through body language, which is not understood by us, then growling or snapping, which is often reprimanded by us, so then it goes on to bite without warning due to us ignoring or reprimanding all attempts by the dog to tell us its state. PHYSIO ADVICE

FREEZE OUT RUNNING INJURIES THIS WINTER Local physiotherapist, Louis Jones, offers advice when running out in the cold.

S

O IT’S THAT time of year when the runners amongst us start building our training as we plan for a spring marathon, and we begin to increase our distances. The weather is starting to turn cold and wet, not to mention the darker evenings are drawing in and visibility is poorer than usual. This is the time of year that I start to see more running injuries associated with muscle aches and strains from colder weather, ankle and knee sprains from running on uneven and slippery terrain, and injuries associated with feeling run down and tired from illness. Here are some important things to consider this winter in order to prevent running injuries, which can put a stop to those big plans you’ve made.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

16

Wear protective clothing that allows you to stay warm and dry. Purchasing a good quality wind stopper jacket and wet proof top for windy or rainy days will make sure you keep your muscles warm and your body dry. Running in wet clothing can lead to cold muscles, and a reduction in core body temperature, which could potentially lead to hypothermia. Warming up is very important in cold weather. Make sure to warm up properly with a light jog or routine, before you start training, and prepare your muscles for activity by stretching. There are lots of different views about stretching, with most coaches and therapists agreeing that stretching before exercise when the muscles are cold is best avoided. However, stretching once the body is warm and the muscles and connective tissues have become softened and more pliable is definitely recommended in winter, if you want to avoid strains or tears. Also the number of times I see people out running in winter with shorts on, red legs glowing as they go, is quite shocking. Running tights are a must have accessory for winter runs. There are baggier versions called ‘tracksters’ for those men who want to avoid the Max Wall look! Stay hydrated. Don’t be fooled into thinking that just because its not tropical weather outside and you’re not sweating, that you don’t need to drink in order to stay hydrated in winter. Drinking fluids, such as electrolyte drinks helps maintain healthy cells in the muscles work optimally, and reduces the risk of getting cramp. Consider your running environment. Road surfaces may get slippery in winter as can wet wooded areas where there are plenty of leaves and roots. Ankle sprains are very common, and can lead to long periods of time off training. Wear running shoes with good grip and extra support. Running on cambered surfaces can lead to lower back and pelvic alignment issues, which can lead to injuries such as Iliotibial band syndrome. There are 3 possible ways that you can increase your training: 1. Duration. This is the length of time you run for; 2. Intensity. This is how hard you train; 3. Frequency. This is the number of runs you do per week. Remember the golden rule of training this winter. Don’t change more than one parameter at a time. Attempting to increase the distance of your run and the intensity at once will increase your chances of getting injured. One common injury associated with this type of training is shin splints. Symptoms are usually felt as sharp pain into the inside of the shin region. Wearing well cushioned trainers will reduce ground impact and suffering with this problem. Stay injury free this winter and enjoy training regardless of which distances you are aiming for. If any of the topics raised in this article seem relevant or if you require any further advice call me on 01273 467614 or email me at louisjones.physio@googlemail.com. The relief of routine treatment and orthotics

So here we are, December already! Christmas is fast approaching followed by the inevitable New Year’s resolutions. So what will yours be this year? If the idea of more exercise is hovering but pain is stopping you then maybe our podiatrist, Karen, can help. Podiatry/Chiropody can relieve pain with routine treatments but Karen can also assess and advise you on specific footwear, stretching and strengthening exercises and orthotics. Orthotics, sometimes called insoles or shoe inserts are varied. A good analogy for these devices are glasses but for your feet. The type you need is often as individual as you are and vary from simple insoles to cushion your feet to prescription orthotics that help realign your feet reducing pressures and making your feet work more efficiently. So whether you want to do more walking, gardening or take up a new sport come and see Karen at the First Foot Clinic, 84 High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, to see how she can help you achieve your goals. Contact us on 01273 455080, email at email@firstfootclinic.co.uk, or visit our website at www.firstfootclinic.co.uk Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 26
