If you are a member of Adur East Lions then Christmas always starts early with the Tea and Tinsel event for older people who live on their own. On Saturday 11 November over sixty over-60s enjoyed an afternoon of festive punch, tea, festive fairy cakes and a good singalong with the InChoir singers. Jingle Bells and Winter Wonderland were firm favourites and everyone seemed to know the words. The afternoon was rounded off by a visit from Santa who gave every guest a gift. This was a very popular event and there was a waiting list of people wanting to come. Despite this, the Lions are still keen to hear of local people who would benefit from an afternoon of tea and entertainment. The next tea will be held in the Spring. And of course, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the Pantomime and in Shoreham we are lucky to have a pantomime right on our doorstep at the Ropetackle Arts Centre. For the past few years, Adur East Lions have sponsored one performance of the Ropetackle Pantomime and invited pupils and their families from Heronsdale School in Shoreham. It is often difficult for these children to attend the theatre as they may need to move and shout out (although that is probably what pantomime is meant to be about!) but to save any worry or glares from other attendees they are free to be themselves during the show. Last year’s panto was Beauty and the Beast and Jasper, the Lions’ mascot, enjoyed himself posing with the lovely ladies in the cast. This year should be just as much fun when Dick Whittington hits town with his cat. Both the Tea and Tinsel event and the sponsorship of the pantomime are funded by money raised by the Lions during the year. Throughout the Christmas period they will be busy fundraising by taking Santa and his sleigh around Southwick and Fishersgate and also collecting at Shoreham’s Farmers’ Market on 9 December and Southwick’s Christmas Market on 16 December. If you see them out and about you can rest assured that every penny donated goes back out to activities such as those described above. The Lions always welcome extra pairs of hands during this period so if you fancy getting into the Christmas spirit and helping out do get in touch by ringing 0845 8337356, visiting the website at www.adureastlions.org.uk or the facebook page at www.facebook.com/adureastlionsclub To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com

Making your pension work for you

I

F YOU ARE near to retirement you are probably looking at your pension arrangements. You may be receiving piles of paperwork from your pension providers informing you of the options on offer. Many people find this information confusing and difficult to put together. Here are just some of the questions that need to be answered: Do you remain with the current provider and take income from them? Do you transfer the funds to another provider who will pay you a higher income? Can you get a higher income elsewhere? If you do transfer, are there any valuable benefits you could lose? If you died after taking your pension, is there a benefit paid to your spouse or dependants? Do you require a guaranteed income for the rest of your life, or would you prefer more flexible terms? You are probably aware that you are now able to access the whole of your pension funds, however, caution should be taken as only a certain percentage of this would be tax free. In most cases you will be able to take around 25% of your fund as a tax free cash sum. If you make withdrawals above this amount, they will be taxed as earned income. Although you are now able to access your pension funds with no limit, many older style contracts do not offer all the flexibilities you may wish to take. It may be necessary to transfer your funds to a new style contract to access the full range of options. Your fund would remain invested at a risk level you feel comfortable with. You would then take flexible benefits by withdrawing income or lump sums directly from your fund. There are so many options it is not possible to mention them all. Here are a few examples; You could take a small amount of your available tax-free cash leaving the rest invested for later. You could take an income formed of tax free cash only or you could take an income which is part tax free and part taxable income. The way your income and withdrawals are set up will depend on your own personal situation, but the income can be set up in the most tax efficient way possible. Most importantly you retain your fund rather than paying this to a life company to purchase an annuity, this means that you are able to leave your fund to your chosen beneficiary should you die. There are so many ways you can set up your pension and different arrangements will suit different people. Some people like the guarantees an annuity can bring, others prefer more

flexible arrangements. An IFA will know all of these options and can match them clearly to your own preferences and situation. If you would like advice on retirement planning, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer independent advice and would be very happy to assist.

A Yuletide Stroll Through Times Past

W

HEN TAKING A bracing Christmas or Boxing Day stroll, whether along the beach or in the countryside this festive season, the walker is treading in the footsteps of writers from centuries past, as they admired our local scenes in winter. Tickner Edwardes in his 1939 book ‘A Downland Year’ has an entry for December 25th that describes how on a walk he admired the holly bushes covered in berries. “It is to nature’s ingenious scheme of a consecutive supply of winter food for the wild birds, rather than to any sentimental regard for the season, that we owe the plenitude of red-berried holly at the season.’ He adds ‘The holly-berries lose their hardness as their colour deepens to rich penetrating scarlet; and you marvel why any are left at all until you venture to taste them. Then the whole astute device becomes clear. The holly is fruit left almost to the last because it is of so uninviting a flavour that no bird will touch it except under direst need. After mild winters the holly-bushes may remain unrifled far into the spring.” Edwardes was also known as ‘The Bee-Man Of Burpham’ and wrote extensively on the countryside and bee-keeping. The poet Hilaire Belloc wrote of a winter’s evening in ‘The Four Men’: “The sky was already of an apple green to the westward, and in the eastern blue there were stars. There also shone what had not yet appeared upon that windless day, a few small wintry clouds, neat and defined in heaven. Above them the moon, past her first quarter but not yet full, was no longer pale, but began to make a cold glory; and all that valley of Adur was a great and solemn sight to see as we went forward upon our adventure that led nowhere and away.’ Walter Wilkinson in ‘A Sussex Peep-Show’ adds “What a hill it was that rose above the broad green flats by the River Adur“ adding “A complete Down, patchworked in the brightest and most impossible colours, but rendered in the best of taste by those great artists, atmosphere and light”. Other Sussex writers of the past described what a wintry trip to the beach was like. Poet Charlotte Smith wrote a

verse in 1792 that recalled Brighton Beach on a rough, windy day: “The surge breaks afar, and then foams to the shore, Dark clouds o’er the sea gather heavy and scowling, And the white cliff’s re-echo the wild wintry roar.” Living from 1749 to 1806, Charlotte Smith was a romantic poet and novelist instrumental in the revival of the sonnet. It is a similar scene for Gerard Young, visiting Worthing in his book ‘Come Into The Country’: “This wind of the south is a moody thing. There are days when it comes howling out of the sky and flings itself at the coastal towns with an awful malevolence. I have clung on to the railings on Worthing Front and watched the wind stir up the sea into a boiling foam till the hissing spray swept the promenade and the beach pebbles piled themselves up against the fishing boats, drawn high up on the shore for safety.” The countryside writer Richard Jeffries in ‘The Life Of The Fields’ wrote of January in the Sussex Woodland “…On the ridge the low trees and bushes have an outline like the flame of a candle in a draught – the wind has blown them till they have grown fixed in that shape.” Perhaps after a trip out in the fresh air however it is time to return to a warm hearth and a Shoreham fireside, inspired by the words of Arundel author Francis D. Allison in his verse ‘In the Sussex Conquest 1066 –187’. “When William came to our Sussex land To try to lord it o’er ‘em He drank a pail Of Sussex Ale For to carry all afore ‘m. But Sussex folk would have none of his yoke Till a solemn oath he swore ‘em. That he’d have no truck With foreign muck, But stick to the Ale of Shoreham Yes, stick to the Ale of Shoreham.”

Depths of midwinter

S

O HERE WE are at the end of the year with Christmas racing towards us in the depths of midwinter. So firstly I’d like to wish everyone a happy Christmas. Christmas aside it can seem like a gloomy time of year and no different in the garden, with cold temperatures and low light levels on short dark days. Just because it’s the end of the calendar year it’s worth

remembering that the seasons never end in the garden as the cycle continues onwards and there is always something to look forward to. A few days before Christmas is the shortest day, which means ever so slowly the days will begin to get lighter and within a month there will be a noticeable difference. It’s also quite likely that we will start to see the first signs of new growth in the garden as well. It’s a pretty good reminder at this time of year that nothing stands still in the garden and you can’t simply ignore the garden at this time of year. Inside jobs are more preferable on really cold or damp days, but many people complain they don’t have anywhere like a greenhouse to do them. Most gardens have a shed of some size or description. Even the smallest shed can be utilized but most of us use it is an untidy store so a good clean out of the shed is worthwhile, and be brutal. How many of you actually know what’s in the shed or have even seen the back of it? If you don’t need it or haven’t used it for the last couple of years, will you really need it? With a bit of ingenuity, some hooks, the odd shelf and a bit of thought you can use the shed for storing the usual suspects such as the mower, but also have enough room for carrying out other garden tasks, such as potting up seeds and cuttings. If you have somewhere to go and do these tasks, where you have everything to hand it really does make them even more enjoyable. Add a small radio and a chair or stool and you’ve got a great hideaway to while your time away. There really is nothing better than being in there to do all the little jobs and seeing the changes in the seasons outside. Why not make it your job over the Christmas holidays to sort out the shed and make your own little garden retreat? If you do sort the shed out then I apologise in advance for any grief you may get from the other half for disappearing in there on a regular basis! It’s been a strange hard year in the garden this year with the weather we have endured (and I think that is the right term for this year’s weather) but it’s still made it interesting and I’m keen to see how the garden reacts next year to everything that has happened. With that to look forward to and more ill leave you to your mince pies and hope that you have a wonderful Christmas. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

7 top tips for staying injury-free this winter It’s nearly Christmas time, and the days are getting darker and the weather is starting to get colder. This month, Louis Jones would like to share with you some useful tips for making exercise enjoyable this winter, and how to best avoid any unnecessary injuries. 1. Warm clothing: Its amazing the number of times I see young football players going to training and matches in the shorts and shirts they are going to play in. The same goes for runners, standing around in their shorts and vests before their 10K run. Make sure you keep your muscles warm before exercise, by wearing a pair of tracksuit bottoms or leggings, and a coat, which can be whipped off just before you compete.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

2. Warm up properly: In order to warm your muscles and avoid strains, it is important to gently warm your body with light exercise. For example 10 minutes of light jogging will increase your heart rate and pump blood around the body to your muscles. Which leads on to number 3. 3. Stretch properly: Once you’ve warmed your body up, its important to stretch your muscles so that you reduce your risk of causing a muscle strain. Current research suggests that dynamic stretching (stretching on the move) is better than static stretching (stretching still on the spot) as its is more functional. For example you may do lunges to stretch your thigh muscles instead of standing and pulling your heel to your bottom. 4. Stay hydrated: Just because its winter and it may be cold, doesn’t mean we don’t need to be as careful about taking onboard fluids. Whilst you wont sweat as much during cold weather, you will still need to keep your muscles hydrated to minimize the risks of causing damage to them. 5. Fuel your body correctly: Although I am not an expert in nutrition, this is still an important part of helping your body to recover properly. Over the Christmas period, it may be more likely to consume more alcohol than usual, which can affect your hydration levels, so drink plenty of water and eat foods such as carbs and proteins to help give you energy for exercise and to allow your body to repair properly after. 6. Train Indoors: Ok so this may sound crazy to some of you, but if conditions are bad enough, and by exercising outdoors where you could slip or fall is not your only choice, head for the treadmill or turbo instead. Also weight training can be a great way to build strength and reduce your risk of injury. 7. Get a sports massage: This is a great way to help those aching, tight and tired muscles recover more quickly from exercise, but is also a brilliant way to avoid injury, by breaking down adhesions in muscles, which can become strains and tears. BEFORE A RUN

Avoid static stretching, and focus more on literally “warming up”, both mind and body, for the movement you are going to do during the run. Low-impact mobility exercises for the whole body are best. A few to try: • Running on the spot, lifting knees to 50% of your maximum • Running on spot, bringing heels towards your bottom – “heel flicks” • Standing with feet hip width apart, knees bent, work your arms in exaggerated running motion • Upper thoracic twists, arms relaxed, in both directions (hipwidth stance, knees soft)

AFTER A RUN

Check out some gentle, controlled static stretches for the following muscle groups: • Quadriceps • Hamstrings • Calves • Iliotibial band • Lower back • Upper back • Neck and shoulders

DURING THE RUN

Making tracks Osteopath Alex Marek and physiotherapist Alex Strach of Shoreham Osteopathy Centre – team up to talk all things running.

H

AVE YOU NOTICED the number of fast-moving creatures on the pavements that seem to appear on these dark autumn nights? Maybe you’re one of them! Doggedly preparing for a half-marathon or marathon next year – or simply starting or keeping up the passion for a sport that has so many benefits. If you run regularly, we’re sure you’d agree there’s nothing quite like hitting the roads to de-stress, breathe in some fresh air and re-connect with yourself. Those sensations that spur us on - the heartrate rising, sweat pouring down our faces and that post-run endorphin rush - all let us know that we are exercising for both physical and mental health – not for nothing is it dubbed the runners’“high”. So it is desperately frustrating when pain of any kind prevents you from reaching your “PB” (personal best) or even from running at all. This article outlines what you can do to help prevent injuries, or if they happen, to recover effectively and avoid the risk of more injury.

Good alignment of the whole body when running is so important – so that the joints of your hip, knee and ankle are in the right position to work most efficiently and without strain. Excessive twisting of the knee/ankle or awkward landing of the foot can lead to damage to the knee cartilage (meniscus) or ligaments of the knee and ankle. Pre-existing problems in the lower back may create more load on the hips, knees and ankles, making injury more likely. Often forgotten is the part that the upper back and upper limbs play in running – the arms move in opposition to the legs to balance the body. And it may seem obvious, but remember to breathe well and deeply, using your diaphragm – this creates a better oxygen supply, of course, but also automatically engages your core muscles.

RECOVERING FROM INJURY – loading or stretching?

A big part of avoiding injury in the first place is to make sure your body is prepared when you do run. There has been a lot of debate on whether to stretch or not and if you do, when and how? Our advice is:

Research has shown that most injuries in runners are overuse injuries or strains of the lower limb muscles and tendinopathies (tendon damage/inflammation). Such injury occurs usually from overuse and it used to be thought that stretching the muscle and tendon to relax and stretch them would help them recover. However, latest research suggests that rather than stretching, a progressive programme of gently loading the tendon, ie making it work against resistance, leads to better results. This may mean starting with very low loads on the tendon, including “static resisted” exercise and then gradually increasing the load up to quite intense levels. Tendons do tend to recover slowly, though, and sadly this means we passionate runners do need to be patient, sometimes something we can find quite difficult to be. However, remember that a little patience now means in the long run a better recovery and more, better running… For help devising a rehab programme, or maintaining and restoring flexibility in your muscles and joints, or checking your whole body alignment to help prevent problems occurring, do get in touch with us at SOC – Shoreham Osteopathy Centre www.shorehamosteo.co.uk 01273 567654

Just Paws Grooming

J

UST PAWS GROOMING Parlour is a well established dog groomers situated on Shoreham Beach. Just Paws was established over 20 years ago was bought by the current owner thirteen years ago, during which time the business grew to such an extent that we moved premises four years ago to a much more spacious shop, allowing us to install a large hydro bath. We currently employ four fully qualified groomers working with the dogs backed up in the bathroom by two bathers and an apprentice. Almost everyone is a long term member of staff, and full training is given to ensure that the high standards we expect are maintained,if not exceeded. What can Just Paws offer your beloved pet? Although we mainly see dogs, we also brush and comb cats, rabbits and guinea pigs which we book in at a time when the dogs have all gone home. When you bring your dog in, you can expect to have a chat with the groomer to decide exactly what we will doing to the dog, then there will be a bath using a specialised shampoo such as Dewberry, Peach and Passionfruit, Berry Blue or a Conditioning shampoo. Flea treatment is occasionally required, and we have a specialised shampoo for that, along with a hypo shampoo for dogs with sensitive skin. The dogs have their ears cleaned and plucked and a nail clip. Our aim is for the dogs to leave here happy, looking gorgeous and smelling divine for a reasonable and competitive price. New customers are always welcome, one of our fully

qualified staff are always on hand to give advice since customer satisfaction and the well-being of your pet is of paramount importance to us. You can reach us through FaceBook, Just Paws Grooming Shoreham, email: info@justpawsgrooming.co.uk or call us on 01273 440864

St Barnabas House Christmas Appeal “This will be my second Christmas without my husband Ben. In March 2016, he started to feel unwell. A few months later, we were told the dreadful news: he had Stage 4 cancer in his stomach, his bowel, and his lymph glands. “That’s when we were referred to St Barnabas House. We came to St Barnabas expecting to be there for the weekend. We didn’t leave. “Not long after arriving, we were given the devastating news that the cancer was in one of his kidneys and starting to spread into the other one. He could have two days or two weeks to live. We just didn’t know. “Making sure he was pain free was always one of the first questions: trying to make sure that whatever else was going on he wasn’t in any pain. It was about treating Ben as an individual and not as a condition. “On the last evening I was sat there holding his hand and I knew something was different. He passed away that night, on 14 August 2016 aged 39. “It was made a lot easier by the care and attention from everyone we came into contact with at St Barnabas. The little things made such a difference. “The generosity and support of people like you can make such a difference.” With love and best wishes, Chloe To read Chloe and Ben’s full story or make a donation to St Barnabas House this Christmas, please visit www.justgiving. com/St-Barnabas-Christmas-2017

Natural skin and body care. What’s best?

I

T CAN BE a confusing time when you want to move to a more natural based skincare and body Care regime, which products work best and how do you know if there are 100% pure and good quality? Here are a few guidelines to help you pick your ideal skincare regime that has only natural and botanical ingredients. Firstly the best thing to look at Is your skin type, is it dry? Does it require lots of moisturiser or oil and does it soak in very quickly? you may notice signs of dehydration if you gently pinch your skin together it will crease in very fine lines, this could indicate a need for more moisture which may mean you need to up your water intake, remember tea and coffee are a diuretics so don’t count! If you’re starting to see more fine lines and wrinkles it’s definitely a good time to start using a product which is going to work to increase collagen, plump and smooth fines lines and make the overall vitality of your skin improve, sounds good? So to get these benefits I would recommend using what I call super botanical plant oils such as Rosehip seed, Avocado, Argan, Borage, these are rich in nutrients, vitamins, minerals and omega oils that can help to nourish the deeper layers of skin, heal scar tissue, reduce inflammation and plump the skin. Also essential oils such as Rose, Frankincense, Neroli and Lavender can help to nourish skin further and improve it’s vitality. If you have combination skin this can be a little more tricky. You can find dry patches on your forehead and cheeks where as the T-zone area covering the nose, the chin and the centre of the forehead can be oily and possibly congested or spotty and have blocked pores. For this skin type you want nourishment that is lighter such as her Jojoba, Borage, Coconut and Apricot seed oils, whilst combining balancing and astringent essential oils such as Lemon, Lavender, Geranium and Frankincense these oils can help to regulate the skins oil production while improving the vitality and nutrients to the skin. With oily and spotty skin types, certainly sticking to the same oils as combination skin yet also introducing anti-inflammatory and decongesting essential oils such as Thyme, Lemon, TeaTree, Geranium, Bergamot and Chamomile can help to purify and reduce any outbreaks, keeping congestion to a minimum and also helping to heal any scarring or pitting left behind from acne or spots. Especially using the amazing essential oil of Frankincense will help with the healing process greatly as it will encouraging the skin to regenerate and reduce scar tissue. If your skin is fairly normal and balanced with even complexion and skin tone and not needing too much moisture then you have what is known as normal skin type, so generally a light yet nourishing skincare regime is needed. You can try different oils to see what works for you. Try ingredients such as her Jojoba, Apricot seed, Sunflower oil and essential oils of lavender, Rose and orange blossom. People often ask me if they should use an exfoliator, I think exfoliating definitely serves a very important part of every good skincare regime for all skin types, it doesn’t have to be used everyday yet at least once a week a good exfoliating regime will really help to clear the skin, removing dead skin cells leaving fresh, brighter skin and allowing for a greater absorption of oils

or moisturizing products. It’s really important to use a fine and gentle face exfoliation product that is not too grainy or with large particles so that it can scratch the surface of the skin, the finer the powder or cream exfoliator the better. There are many different natural powders and clay exfoliators available now. Also the use of a good face mask can be really helpful to deeply clean and draw out impurities from the layers of skin. We absorb toxins through our skin and so a deep cleansing clay mask can help draw those toxins out whilst lifting off dead skin cells, purifying and leaving skin clean with tightened pores. I recommend using a mask that doesn’t dry out the skin completely if it is a clay mask try removing it before it gets to the cracked desert face look! And if you have dry skin look for a nourishing moisturising one. There are some good clay masks on the market or alternatively you can blend your own using mix of clay powder, water or floral waters such as Rose or Lavender and a little bit of your natural face cream to help soften the effects of it drying out. Many people say to me they like a very simple regime for the skin and some claim to only using soap and water! You have to do what feels good for your skin. However a good regime will take care of your skin and leave it looking younger and more vital through the years. Really taking the time to cleanse the skin at the end of the day with something that doesn’t strip it of its natural oils(such as a cleansing balm, cleansing milk or gentle face wash) will really go a long way to improving the condition and appearance of your skin. A simple light application of a nourishing facial oil with the above-mentioned oils before bedtime will help to feed and repair the skin as you sleep, as the skin does most of its repair work while you’re sleeping and it’s the ideal time to apply a nutrient rich product. A good light Day Cream can do wonders to protect the skin from the cold winter weather and drying winds, helping to keep your skin feeling soft and supple, especially if you are also finding the central heating is drying your skin. When you give your skin the TLC and love it deserves it will shine brightly and vibrantly, plus you will receive many compliments on how good it looks Why use natural? The synthetic preservatives, fragrances and cosmetic fillers within many comercial products, will play no part in nourishing or helping the integrity of your skins health. It’s worth using a product where every ingredient will be playing a part to nourish your skin and with so many wonderful scented essential oils there is no need to use synthetic perfume in a product that can only add to skin irritation and dryness. using natural and botanical ingredients actually help to provide your skin with essential vitamins, minerals and omega oils so it makes more sense to buy natural products . Sophie Joseph- creator of Essential Blends skincare and botanical ingredients expert can help you to choose the best products for your skin and to ditch and switch from harmful synthetic to Botanical goodness. Happy Family

Wick Theatre Company’s next production is Happy Family by Giles Cooper, on from Wednesday 3 to Saturday 6 January, at the Barn Theatre, Southwick. play starts the Company’s 70th Anniversary Season and is something intriguingly different. The three members of the Solstice family – Mark the bully, Susan the bossy elder sister and Deborah who seems totally unaware of the facts of life have never grown up. They are held together by an elaborate system of nursery rules and are still as emotionally vulnerable and innocent as when they were children. Into this strange set-up comes Susan’s new fiancé, Gregory, and the childhood chains are stretched to breaking point. The play is disturbing, and funny with it – you’ll be wondering until the last moment how on earth this is all going to turn out. Tickets are £11 from the Box Office on 01273 597094 or online: www.wicktheatre.co.uk Curtain up is at 7.45pm.
