Approval for ‘much-needed’ Council Housing in Shoreham

P

lans to create some of the first council housing in Adur for three decades have been given the go ahead by councillors. Adur District Council’s planning committee last night (Monday 11th February 2019) approved the scheme for the vacant Cecil Norris House in Ravens Road, Shoreham. The proposal will see the former block of retirement flats demolished and replaced with a high-quality development of one and two bedroom properties for people on the housing waiting list. Councillor Carson Albury, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Customer Services, which includes housing, described it as a “great result”. He added: “I’m delighted that the planning committee approved these plans to create some of the first new council housing in Adur for 30 years.” “This proposal will see us demolish an outdated 1970s vacant block which did not meet the needs of our tenants and replace it with modern homes in the heart of Shoreham for individuals and families on our housing waiting list.” “Along with the Albion Street development in Southwick and plans to develop a number of smaller plots across the district, it shows we are serious about our commitment to create new affordable housing for people across our communities.” The proposal was brought forward by Adur Homes, the Councils’ housing arm, to meet the shortage of one and two bedroom properties in the area. The modern building will be highly energy efficient, incorporating cycle spaces and a green roof to improve urban biodiversity. It will consist of five one bed, eight twobed and two split level maisonettes with private gardens at the eastern end of the building. Those behind the scheme added that a blend of red, brown and white bricks will make the building distinctive while a green wall would soften the view from neighbouring homes. A number of changes were also incorporated into the final design after public consultation. Councillor Carol Albury, Adur District Council’s Planning Committee Chairman, said: “The proposal is a noticeable upgrade on the current site, making best use of the land and providing high-quality accommodation for local people. “Although this was a very tough decision, taking into obvious consideration the concerns of neighbours, after a lengthy debate and many questions I believe the committee made the right decision.” The application was discussed and agreed by Adur District Council’s Planning Committee on 11th February 2019. 4

t Barnabas House Lottery players make a huge difference by helping to provide much needed hospice care to local people, week after week. By playing the Lottery, members give £1 a week to St Barnabas House and are also in with a chance of winning one of 23 cash prizes, including the top prize of £1,000, every Friday. Mr Wiltshire from Southwick won £1,000 last year and he spoke to us about why he supports the hospice. He said “I support St Barnabas House because I am aware of what you do. It is terrific that you are there for people on their journey. When the cheque came through the post it was a complete surprise.” Every single year, it costs £6.5 million to provide all the care services that local families need. Yet only 21% of our funding comes from the government. That means we rely on your support to make our vital work possible. By joining the St Barnabas Lottery, you will raise funds to provide support for people in your local community and help people spend their last days in comfort and dignity, exactly where and how they want to. Spring is on its way

W

ell here we are well into February, with Christmas and the New Year seeming a long way off already. Although we are in the darker colder winter months, it’s always a good time of year to start looking ahead. The days will slowly lengthen and with the odd day of full winter sunshine you can start to notice changes in the garden. Already as we are working on projects we can see evidence of new life appearing with bulbs staring to show and new growth on shrubs. As we reach March it is very noticeable that the evenings are lengthening little by little and the clocks will soon be changing giving us even more time to enjoy the garden, so it

would seem spring is on its way. Mind you it has been a very one of the coldest start to the year, with a lot of gloom, prolonged low temperatures, rain and frost, with occasional rays of sunshine! I suppose it could have been winter. Let’s hope for better weather in spring! As we are already in March, and the year is starting to gather pace, it’s time to get your skates on with some jobs. If you are looking to plant seeds, then in some cases, get a move on! Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers etc., will all do well with a good early start. Try to look after them as well as possible from start to finish. Use clean trays, pots or containers, new compost and keep them water and warm. Follow the instructions on the packet and don’t be afraid to be ruthless and thin them out saving only the best and strongest as they start to emerge. You can also start to plant salad greens if you have a greenhouse or warm window sill. It helps cheer up the place to see anything growing, especially if you get quick results. If you’ve got space in the greenhouse you could try something a little different by planting up hanging baskets, or any other container with strawberry plants. I’ve even seen old wellies with holes cut in the sides used as strawberry containers! If you choose an early variety they should give you a nice early crop in time for the first week of Wimbledon. Hopefully you are starting to notice a good carpet of spring flowers showing themselves, although I think they have been a little later in appearing this year. They use a lot of energy to get up through the ground and put on the display, so reward them with a liquid feed of fertiliser to help them get more energy back into the bulb for next year, and dot cut the greenery down once the flowers die off. They take the nutrients back from the greenery into the bulb. Another familiar sound at this time of year is the lawnmower running up and down the lawn. Remember to start off with a high setting on the lawn and make sure you have a sharp blade on the mower. If the ground is still too wet for the first mow, get the rest of the lawn looking good and sort out the edges, to make the mowing easier and to keep the lawn looking really sharp. This is one of the best times of year, having been putting up with miserable weather, it’s great to get back outside and get jobs done, or just see what is starting to emerge again, so enjoy it, even if it means putting a coat on! A SPRING IN YOUR STEP

W

hat springs to mind when you think of spring? Bunny rabbits and mad March hares? Jenny Davys from SOC suggests there are a lot of benefits to be gained from jumping… or even just bouncing (your feet don’t need to leave the floor). There is even a rather fancy word in exercise science for jumping-type exercise – “plyometrics”.

Six Big Benefits of the Bounce Bone Strength

When you bounce or jump, you are repeatedly contracting and stretching muscles. When muscles pull repeatedly, via the tendons, on the bones they are attached to, the response of the body is to strengthen the bone so it can cope with the load. This is extremely good for bone density and it has been shown that building bone mass density (BMD) prior to menopause reduces risk of osteoporosis. But not just women of a certain age – people of ALL ages and sexes can reduce risk of fracture.

Circulation and Aerobic Fitness

Repeated contracting and stretching muscles also helps to produce a squeezing/pumping action around blood vessels which pumps blood around the body, and blood carries oxygen. Your body needs oxygen to power the muscles in your thighs and legs and feet that push you off the floor and control your landing, so your lungs work harder to get the air

in and your heart pumps faster to push the blood that carries the oxygen to those muscles. Jumping certainly gets the heart and lungs going!

Core and Pelvic Floor Strength

To land successfully and not to fall over when you jump or bounce, you need support from your “core” – your deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. The more you practice plyometric type exercises, the more you improve the strength and function of your core and your pelvic floor.

Protection for Back and Knees

These core abdominals, pelvic floor and diaphragm muscles (used in breathing) are an essential support for the lumbar spine and discs. Strong thigh and leg muscles are also important to support our knees and to help take pressure off the spine when we lift and carry loads (shopping or weights at the gym or even children!).

Easier Everyday Tasks

All the above make our daily tasks so much more of a breeze, from getting out of a chair or car, to bending down to pick up the kids’ toys or putting clothes in the washing machine, not to mention running for the bus or leaping over puddles in the April showers…

Mental Health

And when you are bouncing or jumping… well, you can’t help but feel a little younger at heart. It’s been shown that aerobic exercise helps produce endorphins, the feel-good chemicals that enhance our sense of wellbeing.

Safety

Our caring, experienced team offer Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Sports and Remedial massage, 1-1 Pilates sessions Hypnotherapy & EFT and more Call us on 01273 567654 or book online www.shorehamosteo.co.uk 10 Western Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 5WD

12

But it’s important to jump and land safely. Get advice from a professional if you can, especially if you have problems with any of your joints or your back. Before you start jumping for joy, warm up your knees, ankles, hips as well as your core – try walking and running on the spot, heel raises, mini-squats (bend your knees only to 45 degrees), one-legged squats (standing against a wall if you need to), lunges, reverse lunges, side lunges… Always try to keep your knees and feet in line, avoid knees and ankles turning in or out and your knees should never be further forward than your toes. Even if you never leave the ground, you’ll do your body good with these warm-ups. If you do take off, make sure you bend your knees and engage your core when you land. Use your breath to help you – breathe out as you push off. Jump with feet together, or wide apart or both (star jumps) and progress to jumping from one foot to the other or even hopping… Or get a trampette (small trampoline) or a skipping rope… Remember, though, that repeated jumping on hard surfaces such as concrete is not advised as this can create too much impact on the joints. Jumping on soft ground such as a lawn or a cushioned mat or ideally a sprung dance floor is best. Happy SPRINGtime! The Problem: Marathon Runners Knee

I

t’s getting into the last few weeks of marathon training now and hopefully you’ve done most of the hard work and can start to taper. This month we explore one of the most common running injuries, especially common in long distance events, Iliotibial band syndrome, better known as runners knee. It is so common that as runners constantly build their mileage to their chosen race, the closer they get, the injury rears its ugly head. By the time the injury is present, it can be a nightmare to recover from, and too close to the race to cure completely.

What is Iliotibial Band Syndrome?

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common overuse injuries. It occurs when the Iliotibial band, a large ligament, which runs down the outside of the thigh, from the hip to the shin, is tight or inflamed. It helps to stabilize and move the knee joint.

How does it occur?

When we run with poor mechanics or incorrect support from running trainers, we can put excessive strain or force through our knees and hips, depending on how we impact the ground, and the way our joints are allowed to move. One of the most common ways in which ITBS occurs, is if we roll inwards excessively at the ankle and foot, allowing our knee to twist inwards and a strain to the ITB. Another way may be if our gluteus muscles (our buttocks) are weak, we can get rotating and collapsing in of the knee, again putting strain on the band.

How can we avoid it? 1. Correct Footwear

Wearing the correct type of running trainer with the correct type of support, will allow for assisting your natural biomechanics, so that you can avoid putting your joints and muscles under undue stress.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture •

2. Glut strengthening exercises

Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion •

3. Stretching of the IT band

Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

14

By strengthening your gluts, you are increasing your hip stability, which controls how your hip and trunk moves over your knee, ankle and foot, and will reduce your chances of dropping our hip during your free leg swinging through.

Stretching the IT Band will reduce the risk of friction and rubbing between the IT Band and the knee, so inflammation doesn’t build up, causing pain.

4. Sports Massage/self massage-foam rolling By having regular sports massage and using foam rollers to self-massage the side of your thigh, you can maintain a normal IT band and continue to train for your race.

If you’re suffering with symptoms of this condition, it is important that you seek advice from a physiotherapist, as soon as possible, as the earlier you can treat it the better the recovery you will have. Please get in touch if you would like to make an appointment, on 01273 467614 or info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk. To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com

St Barnabas House launch registrations for Great Wall of China Challenge in 2020

Adur LIBRA Half Marathon

B

ack in January you will have read about David Sluy’s attempt at the Worthing Half-Marathon on behalf of LIBRA (Lions International Blood Research Appeal). Well, he did it! He said: “Thanks to everyone who supported me. The total so far, including gift aid, is £1,037. I have not yet received my official time but it was close to my target, so I am very pleased.”

T

he hospice is offering supporters the opportunity to take part in an overseas fundraising challenge of a lifetime. The Great Wall of China Challenge will run from 17 to 25 October 2020 and see a team of up to 50 adventure-seekers trek along the legendary man-made Wonder of the World. Trekkers will have the chance to experience fascinating Chinese culture as they explore the treasures of Beijing with its Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and famous Tiananmen Square. The trek will also take the team along the Badaling Old section where they will ensure their place in history by helping to reconstruct a section of the Great Wall. For those trekking in memory of a loved one, there will be an opportunity to leave them a special message in the wall. Amy Cook, 35, from Worthing was one of the first to register for the challenge. She will be walking in memory of her beloved grandmother, Christine Cook, who was cared for by St Barnabas in 2018. Amy said: “I’ve always admired the work that the hospice has done in our local community and when my Nan died in August 2018, I felt I wanted to do something special in her memory. “The care Nan received from St Barnabas was outstanding. In 2017, we were told her lung cancer was terminal and she was given a prognosis of 4 to 6 months. Amazingly, Nan actually lived for 14 months and in that time she attended the Day Hospice, had help managing her symptoms and received support from the hospice’s Community Team. For Amy, the trek is like nothing she has ever done before. She said: “The furthest I’ve ever walked is 13 miles along the South Downs in another charity walk, but that was ten years ago! I’m a bit apprehensive about the training and getting myself ready for the challenge but I can’t wait to see the Great Wall and meet a new group of people, all with the same goal in mind. I’ve already started planning fundraising events and have plans for bake sales, pub quizzes and car boot sales. I’m also hoping to arrange a summer fayre for family and friends.” When asked what her grandmother would think about her registering for the trek, Amy said: “I think she would say I was crazy, but would also admire the challenge I am taking on. I know she would be 100% supportive.” The funds raised by the 2020 China trekkers will enable the charity to continue to expand its services and reach everyone who needs hospice care. The Church Of The Good Shepherd

I

n 1900 the habitations of Shoreham beach consisted of only a few wooden bungalows and the huts that belonged to local fishermen. The first Norfolk Suspension Bridge had opened on May the 1st, 1833, but the eastern end of the beach was still only reachable by a ferry. The first footbridge linking the town to the beach would not be built until 1921. As the theatrical community began to follow music hall star Marie Loftus’s lead in having homes built there, old railway carriages that could be swiftly converted into bungalows were hauled across the river by teams of heavy horses. Even by 1912, only 400-500 people lived on the beach itself. At this time there was no gas, electricity, water or sewerage piping to any of the bungalows. On the 26th of June 1912, the bishop of Chichester preached to a congregation of around two hundred people in the open air on Shoreham beach. He appointed a missioner, the Reverend P.R Ferris to preach here, outside if the weather permitted or in the bungalow Belle Garde if the weather was bad. Open-air services began with a procession from this bungalow, which belonged to Mr and Mrs Paul Ewens. A banner was carried bearing the words ‘Jesus Alone’. The Brotherhood at Southwick provided a band and a choir came from the Church Army Home at Fishersgate to sing at the services on the seashore. At these outdoor services, funds for building a church for the beach community were donated and soon the search for a site began. After the Bishop of Lewes laid the first stone, local builders Gates of Shoreham completed the church in around thirteen months. On the 16th of July 1913, The Church Of The Good Shepherd was dedicated by the Bishop of Chichester, the Rt. Revd Charles Ridgeway. The processional cross from this service is still in the church’s possession. The original church building was of a rectangular shape with a small tower at the western end that also served as the base of its porch. The Calvary was erected on the 10th of May1917 and now stands as a memorial to beach residents killed in both wars. The font was given in memory of Henry Joseph Cummings. On the 1st of February 1918, Reverend Gerald Englebach arrived as parish priest. He was hopeful that the sea air would

20

prove restorative, as he had been troubled by ill health. At Christmas time he would lead a concert party travelling from the church along the streets of Bungalow Town. The group consisted of grown ups with hurricane lamps and children carrying candles in jars. A harmonium on a trolley could be played when they stopped, by one of the women from the congregation. Reverend Englebach was popular in the community and occasionally appeared in the films made at the neighbouring film studio on Shoreham Beach, which had opened in 1918. He believed he was chosen for roles, as he looked ‘villainous’. His wife and daughters also appeared in one film but were not impressed by the experience. By the mid 1920s, Shoreham’s contribution to the silent film era was over, though the theatrical colony was still thriving. Today there is a plaque on a wall near the Church Of The Good Shepherd commemorating the achievements of Shoreham’s film industry. In 1924, the church gained stained glass windows in its south and east walls. Reverend Englebach remained as priest until 1927 when he had to leave due to ill health. With the coming of the Second World War, the army cleared the beach of many of the bungalows, so they could concentrate on sea defences. The unfortunate occupants of these homes were given only forty-eight hours to move out before their bungalows were blown up. The Church Of The Good Shepherd was left for the duration of the war, standing alone in a flattened wasteland. Although a request was made to the War Office to demolish the church, the officers who arrived to look into it, left after discovering it was actually being used by soldiers for prayers. After the war, homes were built around the church once again. A church hall was added in 1958 and an extension built in the 1970s to cater for the still growing congregation. Jack’s legacy lives on through touching tribute

A

moving tribute by hospital staff to a boy from Lancing who died from a brain tumour has ensured his legacy lives on at Worthing Hospital. The parents and sister of Jack Bray, a 12-year-old who passed away on May 24, 2014, officially named a new blood grouping machine “Jack” on Monday (14 January), in memory of their son and brother. The blood analyser sits next to another machine in the pathology department named “Harvey”, in memory of Jack’s friend Harvey Buster Baldwin, from Sompting. Jack and Harvey were among the first children to receive one of the tours of hospital laboratories which now take place in more than 80 NHS hospitals, thanks the charity Harvey’s Gang, founded in memory of Harvey. Jack’s mum, Andrina Bray, said: “Jack and Harvey were really good friends while they were in hospital and it is a lovely touch to have the two machines named after them side-by-side.” His dad, Dan Bray, added: “It is nice of the hospital to honour Jack and keep him close to his friend. Jack brought a lot of joy to everyone he met.” At the age of ten, Jack was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour and even during intense chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions that followed, Jack’s curiosity continued. Much like his friend Harvey, he wanted to know what happened to the many blood samples doctors took once they shot down a vacuum tube that connects the children’s ward to the pathology laboratories. Play assistant Hayley Edwards reached out to pathology colleagues and helped organise a tour of the lab where Jack was given a first-hand look at how blood samples are processed. His mother said: “The tour was amazing and he loved it. Jack was so interested in what was going on and what stood out for us, and for him, was that the platelets on show in the lab were actually his own. He spent forever just looking at them. He then went back to the ward and he drew the lab team a big poster of the tubes of blood and other things that he had seen and we posted it down their tube system!” Retired biomedical scientist, Leigh Browning, who showed

Jack around the laboratory, said: “I was really humbled by him because despite his illness, he just took it in his stride, was incredibly brave and was really bubbly and happy. He was asking lots of questions and was really interested in why it takes the time it does to process blood. He was just fascinated by it all.” In the years since, the charity Harvey’s Gang has expanded internationally and across the UK to help hundreds of young patients around the world understand why they need to provide blood samples. The charity helps pathology departments host tours for children with long-term conditions, enabling the young patients to follow their blood sample’s journey and meet the biomedical scientists caring for them in hospital laboratories. Chief biomedical scientist, Malcolm Robinson from Worthing Hospital founded the charity Harvey’s Gang in memory of Harvey Buster Baldwin, who he had personally shown around the labs before Harvey lost his battle with cancer, aged 8, in 2014. On Friday 18 January, aged 60, Malcolm retired from the NHS to focus full-time on the work of the charity. Malcolm said: “When I launched Harvey’s Gang I promised Jack’s parents that one day I would reunite the two friends, in memory, Jack and Harvey. In my last week, before retirement, it has filled me with joy that I could live up to that promise to Andrina and Dan.” The hospital’s two blood grouping machines, “Harvey” and “Jack”, now sit side-by-side in dedication to the two friends who made such an impression on staff at Worthing Hospital. Plans are now underway to dedicate other key pieces of laboratory equipment to young patients at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester.

Sussex Yacht Club offers free community space

S

horeham based Sussex Yacht Club is throwing open its doors to offer its clubhouse facilities to local community groups for free. The club’s membership is keen to help not-for-profit groups that are in need of a space to meet. The clubhouse has a lift, a wheelchair accessible toilet and several parking bays for those with disabilities. There are two spacious meeting rooms, Wi-Fi and the first floor room has a balcony with beautiful views across the harbour. Terry Kinch, Commodore of Sussex Yacht Club said, “At quiet times, when the membership isn’t using our clubhouse, it seems a shame for the rooms to be left unused when other local groups would be grateful to have the space available to them. Over the years we’ve had many different local groups use our clubhouse, but it may be that the local community just isn’t aware that this resource is potentially available to them. If you would like to know more, then please do get in touch.” For further information on free availability for community groups or to make enquiries about hiring a room for a meeting or celebration please telephone 01273 464868.

HEEL PAIN SOMETIMES, GETTING OUT OF BED IN A MORNING CAN FEEL A BIT DAUNTING… because you know your heel is going to hurt! Other times, you have those back of the mind concerns as you train, because your heel increasingly niggles with each landing: “Is this going to stop me in my tracks?” Well, you are not alone: • 7% of over 65s experience heel soreness* • Heel pain accounts for a quarter of all foot related running injuries* • In fact, even if you are not very active you can develop heel pain* HEEL PAIN occurs for a variety of reasons and often settles down on its own. However, for a proportion of people, this may not be the case, continuing to worsen and can become debilitating.

Sites of heel pain Importantly, not all heel pain is Plantar Fasciitis and treating any experience of heel pain as though it is Plantar Fasciitis may result in pain being experienced longer than necessary. In fact, there can be dozens of different reasons for heel pain! Helpfully, where you get the discomfort or pain, and what it feels like, tell a podiatrist about why you might be getting it! For example, it might be at the: • Front of the heel • Bottom of the heel • Back of the heel

Causes of heel pain can be simple or complex

• S impler causes include: heel bruising, fat pad of the heel getting thinner, strain to the plantar fascia and increasing exercise too quickly.

• Less simple causes can be: nerve entrapment, stress fracture, heel bone swelling, arthritis. Fortunately many of these can be helped by you and your podiatrist working together.

Treatment of heel pain This will all depend on the cause of the pain. • In simpler cases it can be helped by strengthening exercises • Being shown the best way to self massage the heel or plantar fascia. Though these need to be carefully planned. • If an over use problem (because you have suddenly increased training) it might mean re-thinking activity for a while as well as treating the source of the pain. • The use of the right type of cushioning in the heel of a shoe can reduce discomfort and aid other treatments that are being used. • In more complex cases it might mean having scans to see if if the heel bone itself is involved or injections might be required. • Insoles into footwear can sometimes help. So, hiding under the covers in a morning or running with a limp is not always necessary! Scout Hall, Eastern Ave, Shoreham-by Sea BN43 6PE www.buckinghamplay.co.uk • Tel. 07772-122016 • Reg. charity number 271434 Buckingham Playgroup is a very special, vibrant playgroup, originally set up by parents, that recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and a glowing Ofsted report. The Ofsted inspection in November 2018 rated the playgroup good in all areas. They describe Buckingham Playgroup as ‘a warm and welcoming environment where children are confident, active learners’, ‘children are happy and emotionally secure’ and ‘they thoroughly enjoy their time at the setting.’ ‘All children make good progress’. Cheryl Lansley, playgroup manager, explains what makes Buckingham so special. “We are a Charity run organisation where all fund-raising money goes back into the playgroup and benefits the children. Our staff are passionate, experienced and forward thinking – we attend regular training courses. The playgroup has a lovely atmosphere and we pride ourselves on having a very low staff turnover. We have high adult to child ratios to make sure the individual needs of each child are met. Parents are still involved in the running of the playgroup, which helps create a friendly, inclusive community. We have regular committee meetings where parents and staff discuss fund-raising events and the management of playgroup. “Here at Buckingham we understand the importance of play in children’s development. We provide a range of creative and exciting activities, including sensory play, music and baking. The children love our outdoor area especially the mud kitchen. We get out and about lots enjoying every season with our Autumn and Easter walks, then the Summer beach trip. We have special visits too from the Fire, Ambulance and Lifeboat services. “The annual carol concert, Easter bonnet parade, sports day and Christmas party (with entertainer and Santa visit) are always treasured occasions . We have weekly French lessons from the fantastic Little Lingos, and the children have enjoyed visits from Reptylers (the mini-zoo company), yoga and dance teachers.
