JOSEFINA PAULSON & TORBJÖRN NÄSBOM

T

his is about a one-off concert by top-flight nyckelharpa players JOSEFINA PAULSON and TORBJÖRN NÄSBOM on Thursday, September 6th at The Artisan Café, Tarmount Lane, Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex, BN43 6DA. Josefina and Torbjörn will be in the UK for a few days to teach on a nyckelharpa course. They have offered to play one concert while they are here. The Artisan Café is quite a small venue with max. 50 tickets available. It will be acoustic (no amplification) and so I hope it will provide an informal atmosphere in which to hear two exceptional players close up and in detail. Tickets are £10 each. This is so that we can meet the overheads while still raising enough to pay the musicians a decent fee. I’d like to reach as many people as possible who’d like to spend an evening in the world of nyckelharpas and Swedish music. I’m handling ticket sales but don’t have a ‘box-office’ function set up. Local folks will be able to buy tickets directly from me, and if those who further away would like to get in touch, we’ll sort out the easiest way to exchange ££ for tickets – probably electronic payment. My contact details are below. (Tickets won’t be on sale through the café itself). Not only music! Meals will be available too. The proprietor, Ian, is inviting orders for simple but good meals that will be prepared in time to be ready for concertgoers on arrival. They are: • The Veggie Platter – Home-made frittata, tzatziki, hummus, bulgur wheat salad, mixed olives, gherkin slices and salad with breadsticks. • The Meat Platter – a selection of continental charcuterie meats, tzatziki, hummus,

bulgur wheat salad, mixed olives, gherkin slices and salad with breadsticks. They will need to be pre-ordered (preferably through me, when tickets are bought so I can supply him with names and choices) and will cost £10 each, payable to the café on the day. And I should mention that the café is licensed, so wine, beer, etc. will be available to buy. Doors will open at 7.00pm and the concert will start at 8pm. We’d expect to end at about 10.30pm. This should allow some time for socialising and/or having a meal before the music begins. Finally… If you haven’t come across either of these remarkable musicians yet, I would recommend taking a look at what’s available online under ‘Josefina Paulson’ or ‘Torbjörn Näsbom’. I suspect you’ll be amazed. Also, check out what the internet has to offer under ‘nyckelharpa’. If this is of interest, please feel free to get in touch with me with any questions about the event, and/or to buy tickets. If you know other people who would like to be there, please get them to contact me. http://humph.org/building/assets/JosefinaPaulson400.jpg

Schoolchildren Visit Hospice as Part of Pioneering Project to Learn about Hospice Care

P

upils at local primary schools have been visiting St Barnabas House hospice in Worthing as part of a pioneering project to learn about hospice care. The ‘St B’s schools project’ enables schoolchildren aged 9-10 to explore concepts of life, death, dying and bereavement and introduces the children to hospice care in a safe and nonthreatening environment. Children visit St Barnabas House once a week for a three week period and are paired with a patient who they get to know and participate in creative activities with. They are encouraged to ask patients questions about their illnesses and experiences under the support and guidance of hospice staff. The course also includes a tour of the hospice and the children have the opportunity to meet staff from various different departments across the charity. Learning takes place through discussions, stories and creative exercises. At the end of every three week course, children and patients enjoys a celebration, to which parents are invited, where they are presented with a certificate and a goody bag to take home with them. Mrs Marion Smith, Head Teacher at Storrington Primary School, felt that the course was of huge value to the children who attended. Mrs Smith said: “The course has been hugely valuable in developing the children’s ideas around empathy, mortality and the elderly. Our children have come back with so many fantastic thoughts and ideas about the course. Children were able to talk about older members of their families who had died and were also able to talk comfortably about this to their parents. Two of our children do not have grandparents so they have taken hugely from the experience of socialising with the elderly.” Mrs Rebecca Jackson, Head Teacher at Holmbush Primary Academy, added: “The fab team at St Barnabas pick up the children and a couple of staff in the minibus and take them to the hospice. They have a tour and get paired up with a patient. They do activities together for three weeks and in the last week the parents can also come in and see what they have done. The hospice provides a workbook for the children and they learn about the hospice, acts of kindness, dignity, and much more.” The project addresses national curriculum requirements such as health and wellbeing, relationships, living in the wider world, resilience, loss and transition. It also explores emotions such as loss and bereavement.

Project lead, Marcelle Palmer, said: “Across the whole of West Sussex approximately 2,830 schoolchildren aged 5-16 have been bereaved of a parent or sibling. One aim of the project is that children, parents and teachers feel better informed and more comfortable talking about death and dying. Children, parents and teachers will also have a better understanding of St Barnabas House and hospice care, while patients have reported improvements in wellbeing and reduced feelings of social isolation. The project is also important to the charity in terms of building links in the community and raising awareness of the hospice and its services. We have had some great feedback with some of the children saying they didn’t want to leave and they are no longer afraid of going to a hospice. Some parents who were initially apprehensive have said their perceptions of the hospice have changed.” Places on the course during the 2018/19 school year are now fully booked, but if your school is interested in taking part you can be put on a waiting list. Marcelle added: “The number of courses are limited but we have started a waiting list in case any schools drop out.”

Steyning Bowls Club Celebrate 85th Anniversary

S

teyning Bowls Club recently celebrated its 85th anniversary with a club drive and barbecue at their Memorial playing field green. The food was provided by the Club President, Reg Strong, and his wife. It was enjoyed by the hungry bowlers who had worked up an appetite having played 18 ends. The club was formed in 1933 when a green was rented behind the Railway Hotel in Steyning. The initial subscription was set at five shillings to cover the costs of adapting the green. The club soon out-grew this site and in 1936 it moved to the present location, thanks to the Steyning Sports Ground Association. In 1969 women were accepted into the club for the first time. The club continues to welcome men and women of all ages and abilities. If you would like to try this fun and friendly sport we can arrange a Taster session. H

ere we are in the middle of the summer holidays, so here’s a few ideas of how to keep little musicians having fun and making music while away from lessons. Homemade instruments are always lots of fun to make and play. It does n’t have to be just dried lentils in a bottle. There is a great website that has collated 40 fun ideas: feltmagnet. com/crafts/Music-Instruments-for-Kids-to-Make. My personal favorites that require less adult assembly are the chinese gong, the pringle drums and the singing straws! Making and decorating instruments is just the start. Next, put up the bunting and let the kids create their own mini festival vibe with friends and family jammin’ in the open air. Improvising and composing your own tunes is an importantant part of learning to play an instrument. Something we do right from the start, even in our Little Goose classes for pre school, using paint and markmaking. In all our classes we also dedicate the time to having fun building up young lungs. Blowing bubbles is a great way to do this for young woodwind players and something for home too. Put a straw into a half filled bottle of water… use a timer to see who can make the most bubbles in 10 seconds, or who can blow gently for the GROUP MUSIC LESSONS longest time. Scale things up with a bucket or washing up bowl outside and add bubblebath or washing up liquid to produce bubbles galore! In our classes we also love racing packing peanuts, using straws to blow them across the floor, or a battle to see who T:07874668706 can blow the most www.happytunesmusic.co.uk pieces of paper from E:lisa@happytunesmusic.co.uk one side of a table to another.

Watering the Plants

W

e are into August and unless the predicted weather has changed, there is pretty much only one subject we can talk about this month. Since the beginning of June we have had scant few days of rain, and very few preceding that in May either. Along with the lack of rain we have had some wonderful hot days, and some scorching ones too. As I write this we are not into the realms of a hosepipe ban yet, but unless you have been out there every day with a hosepipe, it’s inevitable that some parts of the garden are suffering. For most of you I suspect that the water butts have

long been dry too. It’s time to be a bit sensible about what you do in the garden and how to still get the most out of it, without wasting water as well. For most of us, the sight of a lush green lawn is a bit of a memory. Grass is a very hardy plant, just think of all it puts up with. It will recover and green up when the rains come. Avoid trying to cut it at the moment, it’s a waste of time and will do further damage. When we get into the autumn then it will be time to take some remedial action and deal with dead patches and give it a boost with a feed. Personally, I wouldn’t waste time using a sprinkler on it, unless you’ve recently had a new lawn put down. It’s much more effective to spend your time on watering the plants. Most large shrubs won’t need regular watering, since they have established root systems, which should see them be able to cope, however giving them a soaking once a week will help keep them healthy. If any plants show signs of distress, then start to water them. It’s the smaller plants, such as bedding plants that will need regular watering. Try and be direct with the water, using watering cans to get the water where it’s needed, rather than a sprinkler over the whole area. Ways to help the loss of water on the plants is also a good way forward. Grass cuttings can be used as cheap mulch on the beds. This will help keep the valuable moisture in the ground. Try to water early in the morning or later in the evening when there is less chance of evaporation. You can also forget the myth that watering in the sun will scorch leaves. It’s not true. You can also use waste water from washing up, paddling pools or similar on the beds. It’s better to use it on the more established plants and don’t always use it in the same place. Again, there’s often a worry about the salt from washing-up liquid damaging plants. It’s in such a small dose that its highly unlikely to cause any problems. It’s a case of being sensible and as much as the garden needs it, be a bit frugal with it, because if a hosepipe ban comes in, then it really will be a headache. If by the time this is published, we have had weeks of rain, I apologise and accept full responsibility, but at least the lawns will be green again. I’m off to get an ice cream and sit in the garden! ark Oakley M Any Garden Limited

Turn Back Time Natural ways to improve the signs of aging, reduce fine lines and sun damage

A

lthough the beauty industry like to perpetuate the myth that we can turn back time and reverse the signs of aging completely with the right product, this is an unfair and unrealistic expectation on the laws of nature. However, with some simple steps you can really make a huge difference to the appearance and vitality of your skin. As an Aromatherapist and natural beauty expert I have seen huge improvements in my clients’ skin with the right treatment. My Essential Blends natural products were created to resolve my own skin issues I had from acne to dehydration and fine lines which I then wanted to share with my friends and clients. With the use of natural plant botanicals and the goodness encapsulated within them you can see a huge improvement in skin vibrancy, along with some other self-care measures you can look more youthful and fresh faced. Feeling good about your skin isn’t about having unrealistic expectations, the lines on our face show expressions of our laughter, our sadness, we need to learn to accept ourselves and love the face we see in the mirror. It can take practice but with regular self-care and a natural beauty regime we can start to see more improvement. Here’s some suggestions to add more vibrancy to your skin and help repair sun damage or premature ageing. 1. Regulary apply a good quality plant oil to your skin, this can help to protect the skin from free radicals that cause premature ageing and also repair existing damage caused by environmental toxins and sun exposure. A good facial oil will help to penetrate the deeper layers of skin to hydrate and plump the skin, see it as skin food! You can use alone or in addition to moisturiser, just massage in a few drops before applying a cream. Use a rich oil such as Argan or Rosehip with healing and vitamin rich components or try Essential Blends Deeply Nourishing face oil with a combination of nourishing and restorative plant oils such as Argan, Rosehip, Borage and Avocado, which is great for dry, sun-damaged skin and to soften fine lines. 2. Massage the skin often, this can help collagen production helping to soften fine lines and wrinkles, and plump the skin.

It will also promote good blood and lymph circulation that will help to purify and heal the skin, plus touch is therapeutic so show your skin some love! 3. Include in your diet Antioxidant rich foods such as green leafy veg, fresh fruit and berries these will feed the skin with antioxidants and vitamins that help the skin to look its best, also to Include healthy fats such as flax oil, fish oils and avocado. Stay hydrated with plenty of filtered water and keep alcohol to a minimum as that can really dehydrate and show up in our skin. Refined sugar can also cause an inflammation reaction within the body which in turn produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, causing saggy skin so cut down or avoid this and stick to fruit and honey for natural sweetness. 4. Stress can have a huge impact on our skin, when stressed we release something called Cortisol. Cortisol decreases the skin’s natural production of something called hyaluronic acid, its natural moisturiser. It can also damage the skin’s protective qualities that allow it to stay supple. Corsitol can also make our skin more oily and therefore prone to spot outbreaks. We can’t always avoid getting stressed yet meditation can be a great way to reset our emotional equilibrium, it doesn’t have to be complicated, just take 5 minutes out of your day and set a timer then count from one to ten on each of your in breaths and then from one to ten on your out breath, if your mind gets distracted just start counting back from 1. This simple practice can help to reduce anxiety and stress and help you feel clearer and more focused plus the relaxation will really show on your face. The Young Footballer’s Knee

W

ith the World Cup being played, I thought this month would be a good time to talk about a very common injury in football, that affects children, in particular boys in the age range of 10-14. You may have seen children who play football, suffer with knee pain, but never have heard of the reason or diagnosis before. So have you come across Osgood-Schlatter Disease (OSD) before?

What is Osgood-Schlatter Disease (OSD)? OSD is a very common injury, whereby children who are usually going through a growth spurt, develop anterior knee pain. When the skeleton grows and the muscles can sometimes play catch-up, the overused quad muscle (front

thigh muscles) can pull at the tibial tubercle at the front of the knee, causing inflammation and a painful lump to occur.

What are the symptoms of OSD?

– P ainful/tender on palpation of the tibial tubercle. – Swelling or pronounced lump at the front of the knee where the tibial tubercle is. – Pain on exercise or after exercise at rest.

How can we treat OSD?

Early management of symptoms is much better than trying to treat this injury when the symptoms are very painful. However it is never too late to intervene and physiotherapy can be excellent at treating OSD. – I ce packs are good for reducing swelling and inflammation after exercise or sport. – Stretching the quadriceps muscles is necessary to reduce tightness and tension in the muscle so that it doesn’t pull at the bone. – Massaging anti-inflammatory gel into the affected area can help with recovery. – Strengthening the quadriceps muscles will help with recovery long term. I would always treat an OSD knee injury as early as possible, however there are usually 2 different groups that sufferers fall into, which will determine how best to manage the condition. 1. C hildren that suffer with pain during exercise/sport. These people will need to follow the above treatment and “rest” from activity if they suffer with pain during. Through following the appropriate management, the symptoms will usually settle very quickly and they should be able to commence activity within a couple of weeks of rest. 2. C hildren that suffer with pain after exercise but not “during” exercise, may continue to play sport but follow the steps of treatment above to manage their symptoms. As long as the symptoms are improving and not worsening then they can continue as normal. NS&I PUT THE BRAKES ON INVESTMENTS FOR THEIR GROWTH AND INCOME BONDS AND FOCUSES ON SMALLER INVESTORS National Savings & Investments (NS&I) has introduced limits on its offerings for wealthier savers. In mid-June NS&I announced a revision to the terms of its popular Guaranteed Growth and Guaranteed Income Bonds. Whilst the actual interest rates were left unchanged, the maximum investment per person, per issue, was cut by 99%, down from £1 million to £10,000. NS&I ostensibly exists to help small savers, but it has raised investment limits in recent years – for example to £50,000 on Premiums Bonds – to meet the funding levels set by the government. In the past NS&I has also emphasised tax-free savings certificates, which were of most appeal to top rate taxpayers. Fortunately for existing investors, their former investment limits will continue to apply if they reinvest. However, the dramatic reduction means that NS&I will no longer offer an easy solution for anyone seeking fixed rates on large sums of capital without having to worry about the £85,000 FSCS deposit protection ceiling. National Savings and Investments has long been something of an oddity in the world of government finance. For example: As a means of raising money for the Treasury, it makes little sense. NS&I collects small sums

from retail investors, usually for terms of no more than five years whereas in contrast, the Debt Management Office (DMO) is well practiced at raising billions for the government from institutional investors, some of it borrowed for terms of over 50 years, and pays lower interest rates for its gilts. NS&I has a ‘value-for-money target’ for the cost of its capital raising, but the Treasury is able to override this with the classic example of this being 65+ bond promising 4% return, issued shortly before the 2015 election. It could be argued NS&I is right to discourage large fixed terms deposits that, even before tax, pay less than the going rate of inflation (2.4% CPI, 3.3% RPI in May). There are plenty of alternatives available, many of which offer a higher income. If you would like to discuss these options with any of our 8 regulated and well qualified IFAs, please get in touch. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Investing in shares should be regarded as a long-term investment and should fit in with your overall attitude to risk and financial circumstances.

Esteem seeks Treasurer Dynamic, inspiring, charity Esteem, urgently seeks help from an altruistic accountant to become our Treasurer, who would also serve on our Board of Trustees. Our charity’s accounts are kept up-to-date using the Sage computer programme and the Treasurer’s work would involve perhaps six to ten hours per month. Since winning an award from The Big Lottery, Esteem has expanded the opportunities we offer by taking on extra staff and commencing an exciting four-year Coastal project, involving young adults. Our premises, within the Old School House in Ham Road, welcomes even more young people to our ‘Drop In’ events on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Esteem members have just returned from an arduous, challenging Pyrenees hike where everyone had saved £400 which covered their expenses but many are looking forward to our more local sports and music events and our History project, covering the Shoreham area. Individuals, or local businesses who might be willing to seconde their own Company Accountant to become Esteem’s new Treasurer are invited to initially contact Cat Vizor, our Chief Officer, on 01903 854987.

Shoreham Football Club 1901-1906

I

t was the 9th September 1901 and Shoreham FC’s first ever clash with the newly formed Brighton and Hove Albion. The match was a friendly at the Albion training ground in Dyke Road on a hot sunny afternoon. Right from kick-off it was a fast paced game with Shoreham FC on the attack and Brighton stubbornly defending. It was an exciting end-to- end game that Brighton won 2-0. Shoreham FC was founded in 1892. They played their home games at the Oxen Field that then existed between Buckingham road, Mill Lane, Windlesham Gardens and Windlesham Road. The team were nicknamed the Musselmen and their supporters would string mussel shells to black umbrellas to bring to matches. In the 1900s, Shoreham FC chalked up a series of competition victories. In the 1901- 02 season they won 3-0 against Hailsham to win the Sussex Senior Challenge cup. They then won the West Sussex League in 1902 – 03, and also the Royal Irish Rifles Challenge Cup, when they beat Hastings and St. Leonards 4-3 at the Oxen Field. Shoreham played Brighton and Hove Albion again on the 14th October, 1902.in the F.A. cup at the Goldstone Ground, though Brighton beat Shoreham FC 14-2. In the 190405 season Shoreham FC won the league again. However they lost 3-0 to Eastbourne Old Town at the County Ground, Hove in the final of Sussex Senior Challenge Cup. They also lost 3-2 to Newhaven at the Central Ground, Hastings in the final of the Royal Irish Rifles Challenge Cup. Shoreham FC built on their success with a ‘treble’ in the 190506 season at Brighton and Hove Albion’s Goldstone Ground. They won the West Sussex League and beat Hove 2-1 to win the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup. They also won the Royal Irish Rifles Challenge cup again with a 2-0 win over Newhaven. Shoreham FC was a very close-knit team of local men, including goalkeepers John Wallace Brooker who was a painter and decorator and Ernest Ayling, an estate agent. The defenders were the brothers Alf and Arthur Maple who were fishermen and the sons of the oyster merchant Sam Maple who had a fish shop in Shoreham High Street. In 1908 Arthur Maple married Ivy Winton, who was the daughter of William Winton, the organiser of the town’s carnival and regatta. Another defender was George Gates, a carpenter, whose father William Gates was a builder and an undertaker with premises at 40 Brunswick Road. His shop door stated that W.A Gates and Sons Undertakers was established in 1864. The three cups Shoreham FC won were proudly displayed in the

shop window alongside Union Jack flags with father and son photographed standing outside. In midfield for Shoreham FC at this time was Frank Stubbings, a cycle maker from Steyning and the identical twins Henry and William Ellmer. William kept his fringe straight while Henry put his into a curl so they people, especially the referee, could tell them apart. The forwards were Wallace Slaughter whose Father Edwin ran a greengrocers in the High Street, and Ernest Digby Gates, the captain who played inside left and was the club’s top goal scorer. His father was the ship owner Thomas Gates. Digby was also famous as a cricketer and well known in the Sussex Courts as a solicitor. He was appointed solicitor to Shoreham Council and Deputy Steward of the Manor of New Shoreham where he acted for the Duke of Norfolk. Playing inside right was Albert Edward Longstaff, aged 21, who was sought after by Tottenham Hotspur after a friendly match. Instead he signed up to become Brighton and Hove Albion’s famous right-winger. Charles Edward Peak played as a centre forward. He also owned the Southdown Nursery in Southdown Road, and became a member of the Shoreham Council. Harry Upton was another forward at that time who came from a local family. Oswald Ball, the manager of Shoreham FC was teacher and then headmaster at Ham Road Junior School. He was trumped for the variety of jobs however by the team’s trainer James Edward Hackett. Hackett was an athlete who in 1913 won the Sussex Half Mile race. He was also an actor, starring in shows at the Theatre Royal Hippodrome and in the theatre on the West Pier at Brighton. He also appeared in films made in Shoreham during the 1920s and 30s.

NHS70: Thank you to all our staff

Southlands Hospital staff, Shoreham

Worthing Hospital staff

S

taff at Western Sussex Hospitals joined in the national celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS on Thursday 5 July, 2018. Hundreds of colleagues gathered for celebratory pictures at the hospitals in Chichester, Worthing and Shoreham, and raised a cuppa for the health service’s special birthday. Staff representatives from St Richard’s, Worthing and Southlands hospitals also joined 4,000 other NHS colleagues at Westminster Abbey in London and even attended a reception by the Prime Minister at Number 10 Downing Street. NHS70 was an opportunity for the Outstanding-rated organisation to thank staff for their “dedication, skill and compassion”, explained deputy chief executive and chief medical officer Dr George Findlay. Dr Findlay said: “Our staff are the NHS and without all their hard work, dedication, skill and compassion, our hospitals

20

simply would not be able to care for nearly a million patients every year, no matter their background or ability to pay. “However, it is often very tough working for the NHS; the demands can be relentless and we rightly set very high standards for ourselves. This is why we wished to gift a small gesture of appreciation to all our teams to say a huge “thank you” for everything they do at Western Sussex Hospitals.” On Thursday (5 July), all departments across the trust received “Thank you” hampers containing supplies of tea and coffee, as well as biscuits and healthy eating snacks, funded by charitable means and community support. Trust leaders, ambassadors and governors spent the day hand-delivering many hundreds of cardboard boxes full of goodies, to all clinical and non-clinical teams. The trust also used a social media campaign, using the hashtag #WSHT, to highlight advancements in local healthcare over the decades, as well as pay tribute to members of staff who have done amazing things while caring for local people during this anniversary year. The #WSHT Then & Now and You’re Amazing! social media posts reached many thousands of people through the trust’s Facebook page (Facebook/westernsussexhospitals) and Twitter account (@westernsussex) with many hundreds joining in, giving their support and wishing to say thank you for the care that staff provide. Visitors to St Richard’s, Worthing and Southlands hospitals were also invited to write messages of congratulations on large display boards which will be displayed in public areas for patients, visitors and staff to read over the years to come. The trust wishes to say “Thank you” to everyone who took the time to congratulate staff, shared memories and joined in the NHS70 celebrations. This is the story of two remarkable families, eventually reunited by the author’s parents’ marriage in 1935. Twelve members of these families were Wall of Death riders and owners from 1929 to the 1960s, several of them among the first wall riders in the UK. The introduction of the Wall of Death into the UK in July 1929 caused a sensation and it became extremely popular with the public thereafter. The Todd and Soutter shows toured all over Britain and Europe, as well as Abyssinia and Persia, and were seen by British and foreign royalty, Hitler and Mussolini, and thousands of the general public. They appeared at the 1930, 1952, and 1953 Munich Oktoberfest, the 1938 Glasgow Empire Exhibition and the 1951 Festival of Britain. Their feats and trick riding were outstanding and included towing a roller skater on the wall, riding the wall with lions in a side car and the ‘Race of Death’. These spectacles were photographed and reported on throughout the period by local, national and international press. They were interviewed on radio, and films by Shell-Mex and British Pathé News were shown in cinemas and on BBC television. About the Author Ann Wright was born into two Wall of Death families and has been involved in the Wall of Death since childhood. She has a BA Open University, BA (Hons) University of Brighton and an MA University of Sussex, the latter two in Design History. She is a researcher and Wall of Death historian and specializes in cultural and popular history, design history and Japanese history. She lives in Sussex with her husband and has two children.

It’s New Year!

T

he Lions’ year runs from 1 July to 30 June and Adur East Lions are starting the New Year in a really strong position and with a great sense of anticipation. The reasons for this are: • Not only is there a new President (more about her below) but there are also two others waiting in the wings for the following two years; • It was the best Donkey Derby and Classic Vehicle Rally ever; • Thousands of pounds were donated in the past year to charitable causes and service projects (more below). The new President is Lion Frances Burt who has only been a Lion for a few years but has really got stuck into charitable service and now heads up the committee which organises the tea socials for elderly people who live on their own. The event in Spring was very successful with 60 elderly people being served refreshments and entertained by the talented saxophonist and singer Alison Clark. She even managed to get the guests boogieing. The next event will be ‘Tea and Tinsel’ in November. If you know of any older person who lives on their own and doesn’t get out much then get in touch and they will be sent an invitation. You know all about the ‘best ever’ donkey derby from last month’s issue but in order to keep building on this success the Lions need more members who can bring new ideas and inspiration (see below for how to get in touch and keep your eyes peeled for a special membership event in October). The members of the club meet once a month for a business meeting and, amongst other things, decide where the money

goes. Each year thousands are donated. Highlights of this past year are helping two local individuals with mobility issues with new equipment to enable them to get around and also providing funding to local youth groups, including taking Heronsdale pupils to the pantomime. If you would like to be involved or perhaps become a ‘Friend of Lions’ then get in touch with the club. You can ring 0845 8337356 or further information is available online – log onto the website www.adureastlions.org.uk

Verrucae

aren Burrett, our podiatrist at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea discusses the common problem of verrucae. Verrucae are warts caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that can be found anywhere on the foot but commonly occur on the soles of the feet. They can even be found around the edges of the nails. The virus is thought to thrive in moist damp environments such as communal changing/showering areas. An infected foot deposits skin cells onto the floor where it is then possible to walk across the same floor and pick up the virus. Verrucae are harmless but can be unsightly and cause pain. The pain is usually associated with a build up of hard skin (callus) that can form over the infected skin. Anyone can get verrucae but children, young adults and those that use leisure facilities are more prone. Some individuals are more susceptible than others. The classic appearance is a cauliflower like area with black dots. These black dots are blood vessels leaking blood into the verrucae and so may not be present even if the foot is infected. Verrucae vary in size, shape and number and can sometimes be mistaken for a corn. It is therefore, important to have the area looked at to get it diagnosed and advice can be obtained. Karen will be able to advise you on a variety of treatments that are available both within the clinical setting and/or for you to try at home. Further advice will also be given to avoid spread to other areas of your feet, to others around you and preventative measures you may wish to consider for the future. If you suspect you have a verrucae or indeed any other foot problem contact us for an appointment on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www.firstfootclinic.co.uk
