FEBRUARY 2018

Inside this issue
elcome to the February Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine. This month we celebrate Valentine ’s Day and on the 16th February we have the Chinese New Year which in China is referred to as the Spring festival. This seems very appropriate with the lighter evenings we are having. As we head towards spring the weather remains unpredictable with rain and gales. I am certainly looking forward to blue skies. In this month’s issue read the latest article from Judy Upton and the latest tips and advice from Louis Jones. Pembroke’s Financial Services, which is about 2 min stroll across from The Ropetackle, will be in the magazine going forward. Check out their latest financial advice. Of course we have more helpful advice from Jenny at Shoreham Osteopathy Clinic and foot advice from First Foot Clinic. Each year we make resolutions to take care of ourselves, eat healthier, exercise, maybe lose some extra weight and have more energy. In this issue you can check out Kate Fisher’s advice and a success story from one of her clients. We are always updating our What’s On Pages with new classes and activities in the area. With six pages of local events in Shoreham and Southwick, there is a lot to choose from. On that note, Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy Chinese New Year! We will see you in March. Please send copy to us by 11th February if you would like to be in the next edition.

Green Light for Major Riverside Development in Shoreham
P
lans to build 540 riverside homes - including 162 affordable units - on a derelict harbour site in Shoreham have been approved by councillors. Southern Housing Group’s proposal to create a ten building development on the Free Wharf site in Brighton Road received the green light at a meeting of Adur District Council’s planning committee last night (22nd January 2018). The approval is the first step in the local authority’s long-term ambition to regenerate Shoreham Harbour and create a new high-quality residential area with riverside promenade and cycle path. In addition to half of the three acre site being transformed into attractive public space, a retail unit, three restaurants, and office space for small and medium business will be created. Developers also pledged to set aside more than £2 million towards infrastructure improvements. This includes highways, schools and health provision as well as measures to mitigate the impact of the development on air quality. Councillor Carol Albury, Chairman of Adur District Council’s Planning Committee, said: “While it was not an easy decision to take, the committee believes this development will provide significant economic, social and environmental benefits which demonstrably outweigh any negative effects of the proposal. As part of the Adur Local Plan, which was approved last month, the council has committed to building at least 1,100 houses along the western harbour arm. This is the first step in achieving that total.” Southern Housing Group said it had spent the last two years working closely with council planners and residents in drawing up the plans. The developers commented the design approach had received the support of the Coastal Design Review Panel and would “stand the test of time”.
The 162 affordable homes, which meets quotas in the Adur Local Plan, includes 122 homes for shared ownership and 40 for affordable rent. Southern Housing Group said it would agree to a council request to provide more affordable rented apartments in the development in the future, if it was proved to be financially viable. In addition to the riverside pedestrian and cycle route, the developers will create mooring platforms and an observation platform at the end of Humphrey’s Gap. Flood defences lasting more than 100 years will also be provided at the former Minelco site. Councillors recognised the location of the site near to the town centre and railway station meant that the provision of 512 car parking spaces (438 for residents) was enough given the developers’ pledge to encourage residents to use sustainable transport. Space for 596 bicycles will also be provided. A detailed travel plan, which will deter future residents from owning cars, and £138,000 of Section 106 payments will go towards limiting the impact of air pollution. Southern Housing Group said 224 jobs will be created in the construction phase with the council securing a commitment to use local labour force and employ apprenticeships where possible. Up to 170 further jobs will be provided once the development is complete. Councillor Brian Boggis, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “The regeneration of the Shoreham Harbour arm has been a long held ambition of the council and I’m pleased that the committee has taken this first step in developing this former industrial area. As well as providing some much needed affordable housing for local residents on a derelict brownfield site, half of the area will be turned into highquality public space - something that will enhance Shoreham’s growing reputation as a vibrant coastal town.”
Local hospice launches new ‘Sugarfree for St B’ fundraising campaign
W
orthing hospice St Barnabas House is encouraging people to get healthy this January or February by giving up sugar. The new ‘Sugar-free for St B’ campaign, launched for the New Year, asks supporters of the charity to give up sugar and raise sponsorship for the hospice. Wendy Bardsley, Community Fundraising Manager at St Barnabas House, said: “We are encouraging people to give up sugar and ask friends and family for sponsorship to raise money for St Barnabas House at the same time. You could give up sweets, biscuits, sugar in your tea, or give up all three! Ask your friends to sponsor you and help us to provide vital hospice care.” It costs over £6 million each year to pay for the cost of all the care services provided by St Barnabas House and only a small part of that is government funded, meaning the majority has to be raised through voluntary donations and fundraising. Wendy added: “Just 21 percent of our costs are paid for via statutory funding, which means we depend on the generosity and support of our local community to help us raise the funds required to provide all of our care services. Sugar-free for St B is really easy to get involved in. All you have to do is download a sponsor form from our website and you can start your fundraising straight away.” If you would like to take part in Sugar-free for St B you can find out more information or download a sponsor form at www.stbh. org.uk/sugar-free. Alternatively you can talk to a member of the St Barnabas House Fundraising Team by calling 01903 254777 or emailing fundraising@stbh.org.uk

INVESTING FOR CHILDREN – IT’S NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS! NATIONAL SAVINGS CLOSED ONE INVESTING FOR CHILDREN OPTION, BUT THERE ARE MANY MORE POSSIBILITIES TO CONSIDER. In September of last year National Savings & Investments (NS&I) withdrew the Children’s Bond from sale and launched its first online-only Junior ISA (JISA). The new cash JISA is hardly league table topping: at the time of writing this NS&I currently offers only a 2.25% variable interest rate compared with 3.25% available from some High Street names. While interest rates for cash JISAs are generally higher than those available on adult cash ISAs, a cash JISA may not be the best option for a child or grandchild (or anyone else under 18): • It is arguable that putting capital on a short-term deposit may not be the most sensible option to maximise returns, especially if the investment is going to be locked away for potentially many years, until the child reaches age 18. • At age 18, the JISA funds become immediately available to the new adult. Some families may feel that making a full JISA fund available to an 18-year old is not always advisable. If you’re uncertain about how a young adult might handle their sudden windfall, there are other options. One of these is to contribute to a Personal Pension instead of a JISA, which will effectively lock money away until maybe around the age of say 55 to 60 for today’s child.
In between these two age extremes, it is possible to use trusts to make gifts to children while still retaining some control as a trustee over when and how funds can be accessed. If you choose the trust route, there are no constraints on the size or even type of investment, but the tax treatment may not be as favourable. For more information on all the options for children’s investments, do get in touch – this is an area with some tricky tax traps for the unwary. Keith Relf, Managing Director of Pembroke Financial Services of Marlborough House Shoreham commented “We have produced a superb, very detailed guide to Investing for Children which explains in detail the taxation considerations, tax efficient options, the use of Trusts and the tax implications and how we can help. Please have a look at the Key Guides in the Resources section of our website or call us on 01273774855 with any questions.

Planning Garden Projects
I
ts been a bit of a wet and cold start to the new year, in short its been pretty horrible, with sunny days few and far between. We can only hope for better weather as we get moving slowly towards spring With the wet weather we have some areas of the garden have taken a battering and many plants don’t like having their feet wet for prolonged periods. Have a good check around
after rainfall and see what wet and boggy areas you have, even in pots. If you do, then you really need to make an effort to sort them out. Often it can be as simple as forking the area through to loosen up the ground and adding some grit or compost into the soil to help break it up. If you find plant pots are doing it, then it’s a good sign that you really need to take the plant out and repot it, with more free draining material in the base, such as some large stones, gravel and new compost. Your plants will thank you for it. At this time of year, I find people have grand ideas about what they want to do in the garden, which seldom get followed through due to the size and scale or other things, such as life getting in the way. The garden is a great place to be and a wonderful healthy pastime, so don’t get discouraged and try to plan to do small parts of the garden this year, in manageable chunks. Look at projects that can be done in a short space of time and give good satisfying results. For example, why not sort out a small bed in the garden and replant it with some bedding plants and a few shrubs, or decide to actually do some hanging baskets or some pots planted up with a variety of different plants? Or why not give growing some simple vegetables such as salads a go. It all comes down to doing what’s manageable. If you try and do something too big you will quickly get disillusioned. Much better to have a plan and work away at it towards a larger goal. The results can be great, and it can be a lot more cost effective. Time and time again I see people weighed down with literally hundreds of plants bought from the garden centre with nowhere to plant them all, so they are all squeezed in, meaning results are poor. Often in the garden, less is so much more and nature will always help to fill out spaces So why not come up with a project or three in the garden for the coming couple of months and try to achieve it this year. I think you will be surprised how much of a big difference a small amount of targeted work can make!. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Mother Nature’s Gifts – for Beauty, Health and Emotional Harmony
T
here is a treasure chest of medicines and remedies that are just within our reach in the natural world, many are already been used within our pharmaceuticals. There is a growing interest and demand for more back to nature elements within our food, cosmetics and cleaning products, due to increased awareness of the negative Impact on our health that synthetic and chemical laden products can bring. Often contained within products are skin irritating preservatives, sea polluting foaming agents, artificial perfumes and unnecessary thickeners. In utilising the often potent natural ingredients in skincare and body care products we find that they not only have an array of benefits but can also can be kinder to our skin and the environment. Here are five top plant Essences that not only tackle skin and health issues but also remedy emotional imbalance or disharmony 1) Lavender essential oil – Well known for its deeply relaxing qualities, this herb also has a multitude of uses and should be in every persons medicine cabinet or first aid kit! Its ability to bring about rapid skin healing for burns, scars, cuts and infections, soothing any irritation and inflammation. Spots, bites or rashes will gain instant relief from its application. A natural analgesic Lavender can help ease painful joints and muscles, headaches and back pain, whilst easing stress and anxiety and helping to promote deep restful sleep. It can also help ease respiratory problems and soothe mucus membranes in the case of colds and flu. 2) Frankincense essential oil – This ancient plant resin has been used for centuries, in ancient ritual and ceremony yet its properties go way beyond its spiritual uses, as some studies have demonstrated its ability to treat cancer. A compound found within Frankincense has been seen to target and destroy cancel cells. This promising evidence gives us a demonstration of plants and their power to heal. Like lavender it also has a strong action as a respiratory aid, easing
bronchitis and asthma while boosting the immune system. It can be a supportive remedy for grief as its deep and soothing scent can provide much comfort and peace and is also helpful when used as an incense or essential oil during meditation. A very popular ingredient in skin care as it has anti-aging and skin rejuvenating benefits. 3) Calendula oil – Taken as a herbal remedy this golden flower otherwise known as Marigold helps to cleanse our lymphatic system, help immunity and soothe the digestive system. It also has soothing skin healing properties, which are very helpful for the treatment of psoriasis and eczema, acne and rosacea. 4) Rosehip seed oil – This oil which is popular in beauty products due to it being rich in vitamins and antioxidants (that fight the free radicals that cause premature aging!) and precious omega oils. It is like a super food for the skin. It is rich and hydrating, softening fine lines, dark spots, scars and redness. 5) Lemon essential oil – This oil is a wonderful natural antiseptic. Cleansing and enlivening for the skin, helping to rebalance oily and congested skin types. Its fresh zesty scent can help to ease depression and exhaustion, focusing the mind and giving a morale boost. It has an action that supports liver function and is shown to boost white blood cell count to help the immune system, its great to inhale some drops of oil in hot water and for the resulting steam to clear the sinuses of catarrh when clearing a cold. Lift your spirits with this light and refreshing oil! Please note all essential oils must be diluted prior to use and are not to be take internally. Please consult a qualified therapist for further advice on their use.

Farewell Christmas, Hello Easter!
I
t seems an odd time to be talking about Christmas with the days lengthening visibly at last but Adur East Lions wanted to share the good news of the money raised over the Christmas period. There were a number of fundraising activities taking place from the end of November and throughout December from street markets to sleigh collections and a total of over £1800 was raised thanks to the generosity of the people of Southwick and Shoreham. Special thanks also need to go to Shoreham Rowing Club and Hove and Adur Sea Cadets who helped with the street collections. It was a struggle at times to find enough stand-ins for Santa so if anyone out there thinks it would be their ideal job please get in touch with the Lions ready for Christmas 2018! One of the great things about being a member of the Lions is that you are part of the decision-making process determining where the money will go. It had already been agreed by members of the club that a production of Dick Whittington at The Ropetackle would be funded for the pupils of Heronsdale School and this took place on 28 December [see photo]. There are still funds remaining for other worthy causes. Now Easter is really early this year and so no sooner are the Lions dusting the snow off the sleigh then they are looking for premises in which to lay giant chocolate Easter Eggs. Members of the public can purchase a lucky number for £1 and hopefully win the egg. If you have a business with a high footfall and think you could sell 100 numbers over the course of a few weeks then please get in touch.
Before Easter the Lions will also be collecting in aid of Marie Curie on Saturday 10 March at Shoreham Farmers’ Market. Last year a massive £900 was raised and it would be great to reach £1000 this year. Marie Curie have very kindly lent a Daffy costume for somebody to wear. Any volunteers please get in touch! As always the Lions are very pleased to hear from anyone who would like to help out at any of their events. If this is you then please ring 08458337356 or message via the Facebook page www.facebook.com/adureastlionsclub

The Concrete Ships from Shoreham
T
he destruction of British ships by enemy submarines in World War One was so immense that there was little steel left available to make replacement vessels. A crisis was looming so the government decided to invest £4,000,000 in a national project to build ships out of concrete. Recalled from the trenches of the Western Front in 1918, Royal Engineer Guy Maunsell designed John Ver Mehr’s shipyard on the River Adur at Shoreham so it could be used for this purpose. The shipyard then constructed and contributed six concrete barges and six tugs to the national effort. Unfortunately their assembly wasn’t complete until after war had ended. The tugs were assembled on slipways and the barges in dry docks. The formula for the concrete mix was one-part shingle, plus one-and-two-thirds sand and one-and-two-thirds cement. The shingle was locally sourced and the cement shipped in by river barge from Beeding. The sand came from the Storrington pits. Transportation of materials around the yard was by petrol-driven locomotive running on a narrowgauge railway. Large powered mixers combined the materials into concrete. A ship’s skeleton was constructed from pre-cast concrete frames reinforced by fixing steel rods to them. Steel baseplates for decking bulkheads and machinery housing were added. A mould of shaped timber was erected and braced and then concrete was poured in to create the hull. Pneumatic hammers pressed upon the concrete as it set to get rid of air bubbles. The casting was always done on mild dry days as temperature and moisture would affect the setting. The slightest undetected flaw in the hull could increase over time and lead to the vessel’s destruction by weather and sea. To make the concrete ships water-resistant a proofing compound was added during mixing. After setting, the timber mould was broken away and the concrete exterior sealed with cement mortar then a bitumen coating was applied. The hull was then painted. All the ships were built to a standard design. The tugs were 125 feet long and 27 feet and 6 inches across with a moulded depth of l4 feet and 10 inches. The draught was 13 feet and 4 inches. The hull and deckhouse were also made of concrete while the rudderpost, boiler top casings and engine room skylights were steel. The bridge chartroom and part of the deck were timber. The barges measured 170 feet long and 33 feet across with a moulded depth of 18 feet. Their draught was 18 feet and 6 inches. Each ship had three cargo-holds that were 16 feet deep. The Shoreham barges were smaller than their national sister ships. All the Concrete Ships were steam-powered and had ‘Crete’ as a prefix to their actual name. The barges were the Cretestile, Creteshade, Cretestream, Cretestreet, Creteshore and Cretesurf, all launched in 1919. The tugs were Creteboom and
CreteGaff, which were also launched in 1919. Further tugs, The Cretemast, Creteyard Creteblock and Cretewheel were launched in 1920. In 1922, the Government decided to sell the Concrete Ships. S.A. Portus Co. purchased the Cretegaff and the rest were sold to Stelph & Leighton who managed the Crete Shipping Company. The Cretestile while carrying coal from Tyneside was wrecked at Gorleston, Norfolk on 15th December 1919. The Cretestreet sank in King George Dock at Hull on 10th February 1920. She was raised and sunk again to become part of the seawall in 1925. She is currently part of the jetty of the Hull Container Terminal. The Cretewheel met an unfortunate end, striking the rocks at Newbiggin-by-the Sea in Northumberland on the 14th October 1920. The Creteyard was scrapped and its engines cannibalised for another vessel in 1924. The Cretemast was scrapped in 1930. The Creteblock was decommissioned in 1934 and lay derelict in the Whitehall Shipyard at Whitby until 1947. While being towed out to sea to be sunk, she broke free and grounded herself. Forming a hazard to shipping, she was blown up and her wreckage is still visible at low tide. The Creteboom was sold to the South Stockton ShipBreaking Co. in 1935. She was stripped of engines and boiler then sold in 1937 to the Ballina Harbour Commissioners, County Mayo. After springing a leak she was abandoned and left derelict in the river Moy. The Cretegaff worked the river Mersey in 1936 delivering newspapers then was sold to the Oil & Cake Co. in Drogheda, County Louth in 1937 to become a grain barge on the river Boyne. In 1986 she went to Carlingford Lough to become the marina clubhouse. She later became part of the seawall. What happened to the other Concrete Ships of Shoreham is unknown. It is likely they were sold on and renamed. They had a mysterious if somewhat quirky charm and it was necessity that bought them into being. The expertise of Guy Maunsell in maritime engineering and concrete construction continued to be much sought after worldwide. Judy Upton

Keeping Up Those New Year Promises!
W
e hope all your new year’s resolutions are going well for you, but just in case they aren’t, here are some top tips from Henrietta Ullmann and Jenny Davys, osteopaths at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre.
1. Gradual changes are much easier to stick to than sudden ones
Sometimes It’s difficult to make big changes all at once – perhaps it is too much to ask yourself to go to the gym three times a week if you’ve not been doing any exercise at all on a regular basis. If you are struggling, why not try incorporating 15-30 minutes of exercise into your day, every other day. This could be as simple as a fast walk around the block. Research shows that just 10 minutes’ active walking a day can increase your energy levels and mood, as well as giving your heart a workout. There are many apps out there that make walking more interesting– the General Osteopathic Council recommends the Government’s freebie app “Active10”. If you can’t find time for a regular class, many people now use apps for other forms of exercise such as yoga or Pilates, but always make sure you choose a programme that suits your fitness level and experience. If you have any worries about this, ask a
professional, such as an osteopath or physiotherapist, to advise you on the suitability for YOU of any exercise regime. The same mantra of starting small can be applied to many resolutions; for instance - reducing alcohol intake or consumption of fatty, sugary foods – rather than going “cold turkey”, small, gradual changes are usually much more sustainable in the long-term. To change a habit takes many days (research says up to 66…) so remember it will take time and perseverance – congratulate yourself each day you keep to your goal.
2. If you have a setback, don’t give up, seek support!
It’s not unusual to slip up – life events interrupt your new routine or perhaps you sustain an injury which means you have to rest or scale down your training regime. If you have had an injury from trying out a new exercise or returning to an old one, it’s best to seek out professional help for your recovery. This could make your return to your resolution quicker, easier and make sure that you avoid further injury. If you have had to stop training, make sure you build up again gradually. On the other hand, you might be trying to change a habit or to develop a healthier mindset for yourself, but encounter trouble sticking to your goals and indeed find your old habits creeping back. Again, try not to tell yourself off, but rather accept that you are human and perhaps look into alternative approaches to reaching your goal than your original idea. This might mean research on Google into how others have dealt with similar problems, or a visit to the local library for inspiration. Sometimes it may help to see a professional therapist, such as a hypnotherapist or counsellor, if you think there might be a more deep-seated emotional root or cause.
3. Keep things simple Pop in to our calm and welcoming space, right in the heart of beautiful Shoreham We offer Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Sports and a range of massage therapies, Hypnotherapy, EFT & Matrix Reimprinting 1-1 Pilates sessions

20
Another question to ask yourself is, are you finding your resolution difficult to achieve because it is too complex? Have you set yourself a goal that on paper seemed simple enough but in reality is overwhelming? If this is the case, try breaking your goal into smaller, more manageable ones and celebrate each one as you achieve it. Suddenly you’ll find you’ve got further than you thought you could and it will get easier with time. As the ancient Chinese philosophers used to say, “A thousand-mile journey starts with the first step…”
4. Go easy on yourself
This is the most important thing! Don’t forget that making any changes in one’s life is not always easy (in fact, often is not). Remember to congratulate yourself, and others you know, for any progress you or they make, however small it may seem. You can do it! If you need any advice on improving your health and wellbeing, the SOC team may be able to help. Walk on Fire to Raise Funds for St Barnabas House or the Worthing RFC Minis Tour
orthing Rugby Club are hosting an exciting firewalk on Saturday 17 March as part of their St Patrick’s Day celebrations. The event, which anyone can take part in as long as they are aged 10 or over on the day of the event, will be raising sponsorship for Worthing-based hospice St Barnabas House and the Worthing RFC Minis Tour. It costs just £20 to register to take part in the firewalk with participants encouraged to raise a minimum sponsorship of £100. Patrick Hooper, Worthing RFC Minis Tour Manager, said: “The firewalk is part of our St Patrick’s Day extravaganza. We’re going to have an outside marquee bar with a projector at one end to watch the St Barnabas House provides hospice care for patients in Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas Six Nations from 2pm onwards. The both at the hospice and in the local community. firewalk will take place at 6:30pm and afterwards the band will Wendy Bardsley, Community Fundraising Manager at St come on and we will rock the night away!” Barnabas House, said: “To provide all of our care services Firewalk participants can choose to raise sponsorship for every year it costs £6.1 million and we only receive a small either St Barnabas House or the Worthing RFC Minis Tour. percentage of that through statutory funding. “When we were approached by Worthing Rugby Club about this event we saw it as a really good opportunity to form a partnership with a sports team which plays an important role in our local community. “It’s going to be a really exciting event. Anyone can take part in the firewalk. The £20 registration fee will cover the cost of the event with any sponsorship money raised on top of that going directly to either St Barnabas House or the RFC Minis Tour.” Patrick added: “From the rugby club’s point of view it’s a chance to make the annual Under-7s to Under-11s Tour at the club as inclusive as possible to allow some of the kids who would most benefit from a rugby trip away to take part. “I’m keen to move the image of Rugby Union away from being an elite sport to being a good way for kids to get fit and learn valuable lessons that will transfer to the rest of their life. “Some of the young people at the club are in care and the only regular input from a strong adult figure can be rugby. “Promotion of health and care for all sections of society brought me onto my favourite local charity, St Barnabas House, which is close to the club.” You can register to take part in the firewalk for either St Barnabas House or Worthing RFC Minis Tour at www.stbh.org.uk/fire-walk 22

Why do you keep twisting your ankle?
H
AVE YOU EVER twisted your ankle on a pavement curb, or perhaps out running or walking, on a hidden tree root? Ever wondered why after the pain and swelling goes, the ankle is left feeling weak and without any warning you find it giving way time and time again? What is an ankle sprain and how do they happen? An ankle sprain is an overstretching of ligaments that supports the ankle joint, through a twisting action, most commonly, with the foot going inwards under the weight of the body, and pain, swelling and bruising occurring in the outside of the foot and ankle.

In this month’s article, Louis Jones explores the problem sprained ankle, why it happens and what we can do to prevent it happening in future. What are the signs of swelling and bruising? If your ankle and foot swells in size then there has been a trauma to the ligamentous and muscular tissues, and lymphatic system, which causes cells and fluid to become stimulated in order for the tissues to be able to repair. Pain is a reaction to the stretching of soft tissue. If you see bruising then this indicates a tearing of ligament or muscle fibres, which then bleeds and usually pools into the inside and outside of the heel and into the toes. A tear is more serious than a sprain, and can take longer to heel. How long is recovery? Full recovery usually takes between 6-8 weeks, with caring for the ankle and doing specific rehabilitation. At the onset you should apply the RICE technique (Rest, Ice Compression, Elevation) to help reduce bleeding and swelling in the soft tissues, which can slow heeling and cause more damage. What can you do to avoid further injury? The problem is, most if not all people who sprain or tear their ankle ligaments, once their pain and swelling has disappeared, fail to do 2 important things. 1. Specific strength work 2. Proprioception/ Balance Specific strength work includes using a resistance band to strengthen the muscles around the ankle joint, which helps to protect the ankle ligaments and joint from further damage. Simply walking around on it and going up and down stairs, trying to carry on as normal is not going to cut it I’m afraid. As I’ve learned time and time again from treating clients, their problems persist. Proprioception/Balance work is very important in order to restore strength and feedback back to the ligaments. When you first damage your ankle, the ligaments lose their ability to send the unconscious signal to your brain that your ankle is about to go over, helping your brain recognize when your ankle may be likely to twist, so that you can counteract it before it happens. This is the single most common reason why so many people re-injure themselves. Doing daily balance exercises on single leg, with eyes closed, or practicing balance on a wobble board can make all the difference! If you would like any further information or advice regarding ankle injuries or treatment, please feel free to email me at info@louisjonesphysio.co.uk or contact me on 01273 467614.
